Havels Greengrocer.
Some of you may be familiar with Havels Greengrocer, the central character of Vaclev Havels political essay “The Power of the Powerless”
This Greengrocer has a sign in his shop that reads “Workers of the World, Unite!”. In his Essay, Havel simply asks why a simple greengrocer would display such a slogan and comes to the conclusion that the only reason he would do so, is because he is fearful, and is thus obedient.
When we look at what has happened to those who have uttered or published statements that go against the current progressive orthodoxy, such as James Damore, Brendan Eich, Stefan Molyneux, Lauren Southern and our own Don Brash, I wonder if the aim of these progressives is to turn us all into Havels Greengrocer.

I await with interest the howls of outrage when Dr Jordan Peterson visits next month.

    Never trust anyone who 8.2 million dollars a year as a “fringe figure” who is a youtube self-help personality. This guy seemed to be saying all the right things right out of the gate, but has revealed that he is a total fraud.
    
    This was a great video exposing what a lot of us knew a year ago about this guy. But thanks to the creator of this video it’s all laid out. If you’re white and have felt that there is something wrong with the world because you have recently awakened to the fact that there is a giant target on your head, then you are not alone. And collectivism among us is going to at least provide a bulwark against the further unwarranted aggression against our race in our homelands. Please, to everyone, if you know young men that still are fans of Peterson, explain the situation. There are so many charlatans on the supposed anti-left, and he is one of the worst.

        Now don’t get me wrong – I enjoyed watching his rebuttal of (admittedly low hanging fruit) transgender militants who were seeking to control the language and the narrative.
        
        Once upon a time I to thought we were onto a winner with Peterson (you can Google it on Kiwiblog General Debate). His unflinching rebuttal of Cathy Newman with facts against emotion, made me think here was our man finally arrived.

Can someone help me with this?

When Muslim terrorists cause death and destruction in the name of their God we are told by certain people that they are lone wolves, not real Muslims, Islam is the religion of peace and to blame Islam is bigotry.

However, when a 16 year old boy who attends a Catholic school smiles, with zero reference to any God, at a lunatic beating a drum inches from his face, the same certain people advocate violence against the boy, send death threats to his family, expect him to be given “sensitivity training”, demand those connected to him and his school lose their jobs and accuse all Catholics, and by extension all Christians, of being white supremacists and Nazis.

Incredible. I cannot get my head around it. Please help.

  It’s the common human failing of cognitive dissonance – applying different standards of argumentation and requiring different levels of proof depending on prior beliefs about the subject in question. The Right isn’t immune from it.
  
  For example. Do we or do we not believe in collective responsibility? Are our arguments, logic and reasoning absolutely consistent whether we are discussing Muslim terrorists; Asian bad drivers; or male rapists?
  
  What about expert opinion and scientific evidence? Do we put the same amount of weight on, and attach the same level of credibility to, mainstream science whether we are discussing vaccination; genetic engineering; fluoridation; nuclear energy; 1080; or climate change?

  The only help I can offer, is that the hive mind is never satisfied, even during good times. When the mind is determined on changing things for the ‘better’, facts and science are swept aside in favour of prejudices and beliefs.

Concerning the complaint Jami made public, he indicated (as far as I remember) it was a ‘harmful digital communication’ matter with a three years maximum prison sentence. As it involved incitement of suicide I checked the Crimes Act for possible crimes and turned up s179 ‘Aiding and Abetting Suicide’, in particular subsections (2) and (3) which were inserted in 2015 where it is an offence to incite or counsel or procure another person to commit suicide even if the other person does not commit or attempt to commit suicide. Prior to 2015, there was only subsection (1) where it became a crime only if the ‘other’ person committed or attempted to commit suicide. The new subsections were inserted by the Harmful Digital Communications Act (HDCA) in 2015 presumably because it was considered more appropriate to insert it into the Crimes Act rather than the HDCA. I am pretty certain that Jami indicated that the complaint referred to this Crimes Act provision and the issue is whether expressing a wish that someone was dead could be seen as inciting or procuring someone to commit suicide.
But then people were referring to an HDCA offence with a maximum of two years imprisonment. The only substantive offence in HDCA (apart from an offence for breaching orders) is s22 which makes posting a harmful communication with intention of causing harm AND where it would cause harm to an ordinary reasonable person in the position of the victim AND where it causes harm. It then lists 9 factors for courts to consider. The provision is at:

I do not think that was the one Jami was referring to. While it would probably be be difficult to prove the email Jami incited suicide it would be more difficult to prove it was ‘harmdul’ in terms of HDCA s22.
As both offences have a manimum prison term of 3 and 2 years respectively, the accused would generally be able to elect trial by jury in the District Court and if convicted would cease being a MP.

  It’s academic. It’s hard to construe an angry text by a despairing exiting lover as being an incitement to a suicide. It cannot be taken to be collaborative or assisting that. As a direction its context of anger nullifies that expressing the desire for a permanent break from the other party.

An adult, even when depressed, should be capable of telling the ‘inciter’ to bugger off and to then get some professional help through their crisis.

    I tried to see if Jami was on the Select Committee that considered the HDC bill, but it is no longer around. I wondered if he was and hence had some knowledge of it which gave him the idea to use it and he then got a friend to lodge the actual complaint. From his point of view it was a good tactical move even if nothing comes of it in due course. Apart from helping to feed stuff to the media (including Whaleoil), it does somewhat hamstring Sarah’s political future while it hangs around. For example if she is charged and is awaiting trial at candidate selection time, the selectors may consider it politically damaging to select her meaning she would be out of Parliament in 2020. This would be regardless of any lack of merit of the case.

        Just a question abo the new state houses that are being built, has anyone have any idea what it is costing the taxpayer for each house as the Government borrowed over 2 billion dollars on their social housing books so it didn’t go on the Governments books.     Finally relinquished my original copy of “Yes Minister” to my Granddaughter at Christmas.

        However, what I was appalled and disturbed by was the ferocity of the verbal trashing of those people—louts in Hamilton bawled at them: “Pikeys!” and “Gypsies!” The objection to them was phrased in crude racial terms, and no doubt actually was.

A few days ago a battalion of heavily armed FBI agents raided the home of Roger Stone to arrest him on charges relating to the Mueller probe. Stone is a confidante of President trump. CNN was there to cover the raid.

A number of questions present themselves. How did CNN happen to be there? Were they tipped off by Mueller? Are they now a branch of the state?

Why was Stone arrested this way? He is a 66 year old man, he is not a heavily armed drug dealer.
This apparently has nothing to do with charges against trump for Russian collusion. Stone is being intimidated to talk against trump.
Could the Mueller probe be more heavy handed and ruin more lives pursuing Trump and Russia collusion when it seems clear nothing happened? There is no collusion.

This is what happens when you oppose the left-wing agenda, the globalist agenda, the corporate agenda. Everyone is after you.

Could it happen here if we ever elected a government that was not centre left, that was not a pack of globalists?

  The other day I watched as an Auckland police car park across the drive of the house next door. About three cops hurried into the house and a few minutes later brought a bloke out, put him in the the car and took him ‘downtown’.
  No guns, no handcuffs, no man handling, no shouting. No cameras for that matter, but there never are in NZ for uneventful arrests except for police reality pr shows.
  In America they like a lot of hoopla around arrests and trials. Jurors are interviewed (illegal here). Defence lawyers are interviewed during the trials and reality TV shows are made out of actual trials. Most famously the O.J. trial.

  CNN, like the rest of the media, know that Mueller’s team file their indictments with the grand jury on Fridays so the media lurk around that courtroom to pick up leads.
  
  CNN, like the rest of the media, know the earliest time in the morning that the FBI is allowed to exercise an indictment without needing additional special permissions (I believe it is 5pm).
  
  The FBI had grounds to believe Stone would destroy evidence, and so were likely to want a lot of people on the ground to exercise their indictment/warrants.
  
  That is just as plausible as Mueller tipping off CNN, given that what we do know is that there have been no leaks from Mueller’s investigation so far (noting at the same time that there have been many leaks from people who have been interviewed by Mueller’s team).
  
  Also … note that a “battalion” is a force of about 500-700 people.

    I don’t always agree with everything the Donald says and that would be one time. However Roger Stone is a 66 year old man who has no violent past and is being indicted for white collar crimes.
    Apparently 19 armed FBI agents arrested him in what can only be described as a show arrest.
    They could have asked him to surrender to authorities and spare him the spectacle.
    But they didn’t want to do that. They want to crush Donald Trump’s associates and make them pay a price for the American people daring to elect a president the elites don’t like.
    
    I think Mueller has been heavy handed and extreme in his investigation, looking for a crime.
    
    And the FBI and the justice department has been complicit in this witch hunt.

        On the information to date, yes, I believe Trump is compromised by the Russians and that he has traded off Russian interests either (a) because of blackmail or (b) because of corruption.
        
        From what I have seen so far I expect Mueller is likely to report that Trump has:
        * conspired with the Russians (which is a polite way of saying “traitor”),
        * laundered money for the Russians,
        * broken electoral laws,
        * obstructed justice in order to cover up the above.
        
        Look, if the information changes I’m prepared to change my mind. But on balance that’s how I currently expect things to play out.
        
        Note … I don’t expect Trump to be impeached. I do suspect he will resign and then be pardoned, as Nixon was. I don’t think the American political system will be prepared to have a President dragged through the courts on the charges I outlined above.

        Stone’s has been indicted on enough charges to simply put pressure on him to tell the truth. He is 66 and facing a choice of either tell the truth or likely die in prison doing a 15-year stretch.
        
        There are two very good reasons why Mueller would not present any contentious information in the indictment. First, Mueller doesn’t want the media heat. Second, once charged Stone has discovery rights *on information relating to those charges*. Mueller must expect that whatever Stone’s attorney’s find via discovery they will turn over to Trump’s legal team. So Mueller won’t want to give Stone access to anything to do with as-yet unindicted people.
        
        I don’t expect you will get any meaty charges about Russia until right at the very end when Mueller puts all his final cards on the table.

  As at September 2018 Jami’s electorate office at 309 Botany Road was in National Party colours (source Google maps). The office ‘belongs’ to Jami as the electorate MP, not the National Party, so Jami can re-decorate it in independent colours and keep it ‘business as usual’. The landlord may be able to terminate the lease (depending on the lease agreement) if the landlord decides he or she rather not have the incumbent there. For example if National won Wellington Central, the Marintine Union as landlord is hardly likely to agree to let the National MP take over Grant’s current office.
  Parties can use their budgets to set up local offices for list MP’s. Such offices ‘belong’ to the party would be used by the party’s ‘buddy’ MP for that electorate.

    I’d dispute that Ardern has not told many lies. Granted her style of deceit is different than (say) Trump’s just blatantly stating factually non-true things and ignoring when this gets pointed out. But she’s still a constant liar.
    
    Ardern’s prefered style of deceit uses tactics such as quibbling over made-up distinctions (“it’s an excise not a tax”), making up semantically empty phrases (“we’re not blaming officials, we’re blaming the process”), and the standard politicians trick of giving a non-answer that initially sounds like one.
    
    But at the end of the day it’s still deliberately being deceitful. It’s still effectively lying.

  Yes, the bottom line is, there is no transport need for the light rail scheme to resolve. It is an expensive vanity project.
  
  It is an extravagant project/scheme promoted by a number of people close to the Green Party. It is a project that Auckland and NZ taxpayers would be required to the cost of forever!!!!
  
  It is impossible to write a business case for the project that supports LRT in any form. Indeed, those promoting LRT do not understand what LRT systems do.
  
  For the record, I have over 25 years experience of providing infrastructure advisory, with particular experience of the Transport sector.

  I would support light rail under some conditions. Some Paris Metro trains run on rubber tyres (I am not sure how). Hence the Auckland light rail cars can run on rubber tyres for a more comfortable ride. With modern electronic guidance systems, the system can steer the cars to keep them on track. So a six car train can stay on the intended right of way by virtual of this system. This means rails are no longer needed. Also modern battery technology means that overhead wires or the hideously expensive ground pickup system (as being installed in George Street Sydney) are not needed. The only thing that may be needed is a single guidance wire emitting a signal laid along the route and even that is doubtful. Voila – you have a transit system with all the claimed advantages of light rail at a fraction of the cost.

That $158,000 plate of scampi keeps on giving. News this morning that last week MPI fisheries and fishing industry heavies were lobbying for a Talleys subsidiary fishing trawler to be removed from an international blacklist of trawlers. It seems the Talleys’ ship was fishing in an international protected zone in the Tasman Sea.
It is contended that as there will be a local court case for the company and ship’s master it is premature to black list the ship. That is bul****t, if, we want to promote our environmental credentials then those caught fishing illegally must suffer the consequences. They are a fishing company who know where these zones are.

So, reading between the lines, why would MPI officials advocate for a company at an international forum without some lobbying from on high?

    The blacklisting of the vessel caught trawling for fishing in an international protected zone (by treaty) is automatic. You don’t need local court proceedings for the vessel to be blacklisted.
    
    As for the crew and the company, that is a matter for the NZ courts and doesn’t need to be a precursor to the vessel being blacklisted.
    
    Personally, I don’t have a problem with it, given the NZ courts are not renowned for dispensing anything more than wet tickets.

        So are the buses that operate on the guided busway in Adelaide. The buses using the system have extra giude wheels so the driver does not need to steer it, but the bus can also operate on a normal road. When needed the capacity of the busway can be increased by using an automated system to allow buses to be closer together than with human drivers or even couple the buses together.

Although installation of the Wellness app is voluntary at this time, citizens are advised that without it looking after them they will not be able to vote or access any services of the state. Additionally, many private services such as banking, food purchases and gender transitioning will soon be illegal to operate except through the app.

Perhaps the main benefit of the Aotearoa Wellness system is its Recalibration function which, with the simple press of the icon, enables the user to totally recalibrate their life expectations in line with the Wellness Committee’s targets and keep up with correct thinking as they change.

“Winston Peters’ refusal to back our allies in supporting Venezuela’s interim president has caught the world’s attention, with many hailing the decision.

Taking to social media, many praised New Zealand for not taking a side.

“One again (sic), NZ demonstrates it has an independent foreign policy and is not a US puppet. It’s a pity Australia hasn’t got the confidence to do likewise,” wrote another.

No ones claiming capitalism is perfect or without flaws. But the issues in Venezuela were under socialism. Own it.

A Belarusian model who originally said she had secret recordings that tied President Donald Trump to Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska and showed collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign now says she lied.

Anastasia Vashukevich, who goes by the alias Nastya Rybka on the internet, told CNN in a report published Tuesday that she made up the whole story as a means of getting out of a Thai prison last year.

Vashukevich was doing hard time in Thailand for offering her sex coach talents to the locals. Arrested and convicted for solicitation, she was sent to prison. Allegedly fearing for life behind bars, she decided to attract some international media attention with her story of having information that would link Trump to the Russian oligarchy.

She asked for political asylum in the U.S. to tell her story. She eventually received deportation back to Russia.

“I think it saved my life, how can I regret it? If journalists had not come at that time and that story had not come to the newspapers, maybe I would die [be dead by] now,” she told CNN.

Now for something serious.
Local Government NZ via socialist Cull , has a report that screams rising seas are putting $14 billion of infrastructure at risk.
This is a huge issue for ratepayers as we know that councils put their hands into ratepayers pockets with little fightback.
I applaud the West Coast council questioning the whole climate change issue and with this report it is imperative that more councils stand up and question this sea level rise instead of taking it as a given.Councils need to get another opinion.
It is unacceptable for councils to take any money to fight something that will not happen.
Cull in particular , is a danger to every ratepayer in this country.
Fight back.

If you’re contemplating a holiday in Thailand I’d suggest giving Bangkok a wide berth right now. The air pollution has reached intolerable levels and each day seems to be worse than the one before. Currently schools are sending kids away because it’s even worse for their wee respiratory systems than adults.
60% of the problem is being blamed on the internal combustion engine. Other contributing factors are farmers burn off, street cooking, lack of wind.
Public transport is already overwhelmed, particularly the commuter trains that have huge queues in some areas far into the night.
Buses are excruciatingly slow.
Elections have just been delayed once again and criticizing the junta is risky, but it’s taken the current unprecedented pollution crisis to stir up the population.
The dictator will be consulting all manner of monks, soothsayers and fellow generals for advice. Anything that doesn’t involve tackling the real causes.
Already plenty of hair brained ideas have been tried like using water canons to clear the air. All they’ve done is got everyone wet.

  Some guys were taking stuff inside that has been delivered out the front. I noticed some plastic bags each containing about half a dozen plastic film wrapped cucumbers.
  I’m sure there’s a good reason for all that plastic, but didn’t nature provide its own washable skin?

The company register shows the company, Evergreen Life Ltd, is owned by Hyung Soo Lee, of Murrays Bay, Auckland. Evergreen Life was first registered as Lee Deer By-Products Ltd in 1993 and changed its name to Evergreen Life in 1994.

        Reports of farmers in Northland threatening to take their guns with them around their farms to deal with the growing problem of cattle rustling as the police say they are aware of the problem but have been unable to prevent the continued illegal practice. Farmers are regularly discovering their stock, both cattle and sheep that have been shot and cut up on site. Often a cattle beast will have only the back legs and rump removed and the rest is left to rot until discovered by the farmer. Farmers say some cattle are only wounded and left to roam in pain until they are discovered days later.
        
        Presumably, the rustling is being carried out by locals who know the area well?

Saw a Karearea hunting in the wild today! My first one ever, outside of the Wingspan centre in Rotorua.

Heard a sound like a good punch landing on target.

Turned to look and saw this thing the size of a big tui, carrying off something almost as big as itself in its talons.

If you ever get the chance to visit Wingspan and see the Falcons flying, definitely do it! They don’t look like much on the perch but the speed and power when they get going is amazing.

  The NZ falcon is a good hunter, and is endangered largely because it nests on the ground its eggs and chicks are easy prey.
  
  In the days before sheep were forced off most of the South Island high country, the falcons/kararea dive-bombed shepherds if they came near their nests.
  
  I think the use of the falcons as crop protectors in vineyards was pioneered in Marlborough, inspired by the British bird specialist who has found a new municipal life for European birds of prey as scarers of other birds from around airports and within cities where pigeons are a nuisance.

    Have been out walking at Turangi and Maungaweka and have seen them. Been close enough to photograph them. The one at Turangi sat on a stump about 3 mtrs away and let me take his picture and to get some video. was there for about 5 minutes and then he flew off just to land a bit further along. I approached him again and more photo’s. The Maungaweka ones were a pair and again on a tree alongside the road. young pair who we saw several times and appeared to be nesting close by. Locals told me there were a number of pairs in the hills and around the river. Saw some of them on a raft trip down through the gorges above Maungaweka.
    Great ride down through the gorges. spectacular river gorges.

  I watched a Karearea swoop and grab a starling one evening, as the starlings in their thousands came in to roost, it then landed on the top of a post near me and proceeded to tear it to bits and have a good feed.

Crown prosecutor Rebecca Mann told the court that Body’s offending was pre-meditated and part of a sustained, violent attack. The fact that the assault took place in the victim’s own home, where he was entitled to feel safe, was another aggravating factor.

“From the evidence he gave at trial, [the victim] was affected in a significant way and horrified by it.”

Defence counsel Thomas Sutcliffe countered with the argument that the offending was spontaneous and not at all pre-meditated, with little actual violence.

“It was fleeting rather than sustained. A few seconds realistically.”

A pre-sentence report had found him to be at high risk of harm to others. It recommended imprisonment.

Mann had sought a starting point of four years in jail. Sutcliffe asked for a two-year, six-month start point.

Judge Simon Menzies opted for three and a half years as the starting point. He also added six months to account for Body’s history of offending: Some 100 past convictions.

None of these involved sexual violence, however many were for other forms of violence.

He had most recently been jailed for 18 months in November 2017 after being convicted on nine charges, including assault and breach of protection order.

He had also been jailed for eight months in April 2016 on a charge of male assaults female.”

NZ Herald’s hit job of the day is a smear piece on Christopher Penk. Apparently his father, a law professor, has written some letters to the editor of the Gisborne Herald regarding the euthanasia bill using a pseudonym . With a public career and a son as a public figure it’s no surprise he’d rather have his say without his name, but the herald headlines calls it “devious” and ” allegedly fraudulent”. Not only is it not devious or fraudulent, it actually complies with the Gisborne Herald’s own letters to the editor policy which says you can use a nom de plum as long as you don’t use multiple names on the same topic. So the Gisborne Herald says you can use a Nom De Plum but then used the electoral roll to *out* the writer who sent a letter complying with their guidelines, and then smears both Penk and his father devious and fraudulent! Surely if you use a nom de plume within the commenting guidelines you could expect the paper to respect your privacy. Some years ago I was waiting for my wife at the Wainui Countdown on a very hot day when I heard a baby crying. I got out of the car and spotted a wee white baby in the car next door. I rang the Police and asked if they thought I should break in. They said units would be there soon. As I heard the sirens coming over the hill the 35/40 very tidy mother turned up with her teenage daughter. Gave her a sitrep and guess what she was white as a pancake and sounded a lot like a Froggie. I asked the cop’s if they needed me and was told no! 🙂

I had a liquid lunch with some cops both serving & retired. One has been there and done that and has a connection with the Pike River Mine.

He refused to comment on the Record concerning the Police involvement about the mine as it was a no go area for discussion. Orders from above.

Reading between the lines his final comment when pushed – “hell will have to fucking freeze over before I go in there”. summed it up for me.

Well yes we do, and the main reason for that is that because of our low population our companies are smaller than overseas, and therefore they do not have the sales and income to be able to buy machinery.

But higher wages will only speed up the introduction of more machinery meaning less jobs.

  A couple of weeks before Xmas the old cheese & I ventured into the KMart at Petone. Prices didn’t do much for me & the clientèle were a downmarket demographic compared with the Warehouse.
  
  But my extravagance of the day in the form of a three pack of work socks went back on the shelf when we saw the queue of 20+ waiting to use the few self service checkouts.
  
  How mean does a retailer have to be to replace the needed ten manned checkouts with a sub minimum number of self service units? No bags, poor choice, high prices & self service……if this is the future of big box retail let’s give thanks for online shopping.

        After I retired, my wife insisted that I accompany her on her trips to Kmart. Unfortunately, like most men; I found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunate, my wife is like most women – she loves to browse. Yesterday my dear wife received the following letter, from the local Kmart:
        
        Dear Mrs. Naaska:
        
        Over the past six months, your husband has caused quite a commotion, in our store.
        We cannot tolerate this behavior and have been forced to, ban both of you from the store.
        
        Our complaints against your husband, Mr. Naaska, are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras:
        
        1. June 15: He took 24 boxes of condoms and randomly put them in other people’s carts when they weren’t looking.
        
        2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals.
        
        3. July 7: He made a trail of tomato juice on the floor leading to the women’s restroom.
        
        4. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, ‘Code 3 in Housewares. Get on it right away’. This caused the employee to leave her assigned station and receive a reprimand from her Supervisor that in turn resulted with a union grievance, causing management to lose time and costing the company money. We don’t have a Code 3.
        
        5. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&Ms on layaway.
        
        6. August 14: Moved a, ‘CAUTION – WET FLOOR’ sign to a carpeted area.
        
        7. August 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told the children shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the bedding department to which twenty children obliged. 😆
        
        8. August 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, ‘Why can’t you people just leave me alone?’ EMTs were called.
        
        9. September 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose.
        
        10. September 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were.
        
        11. October 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while, loudly humming the, ‘Mission Impossible’ theme.
        
        12. October 6: In the auto department, he practiced his, ‘Madonna Look’ using different sizes of funnels.
        
        13. October 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled ‘PICK ME! PICK ME!’
        
        14. October 22: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and screamed;
        ‘OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!’
        
        15. Took a box of condoms to the checkout clerk and asked where is the fitting room?
        
        And last, but not least:
        
        16. October 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile; then yelled very loudly, ‘Hey! There’s no toilet paper in here.’ One of the clerks passed out.

So let me get this right. Bolger reckons we have low productivity: first question, says who?

Next, even if we do, then a rigid, union controlled system will solve that? Second question, are you kidding?

Then, any productivity improvements are supposed to come from a CoL that has removed health, Kiwibuild, transparency and immigration measures to assess…….. productivity.

We are dangerously close to getting screwed over and become a laughing stock.

  In case no one remembers it was Bill Birch who created the contracts Act.
  Only thing he did wrong was to not protect the meek and the weak. They were the ones that suffered. Richardson and Slippery Shipley made the same mistake.
  
  If Birch had built some reasonable protections into his law it would still be there. IMHP. It was almost perfect law if there is such a thing.

  I’ve had some experience working on a domestic building site a couple of years ago.
  A number of subbies came along to give quotes, install & stop gib board, paint the house and so forth.
  Maybe a dozen different trades.
  None of them were the business owners.
  Half of them would take any opportunity to stop work and talk their heads off. The best worker was a Maori drain layer. Head down bum up all day digging trenches, laying pipes until one day we didn’t see him anymore. Neither did the police who were looking for him.
  A particularly bad worker was a Yorkshire bloke who had all the gossip from around Auckland building sites.
  Then there was the Greek gib stopper and the South African security expert . . . . .
  The Russian gib fixers were pretty good, but then half them couldn’t speak English.
  So if these people were anything to go by NZ is very unproductive.
