Nostradamus

On 12 October 2013 the good people of Dunedin had to make a difficult and potentially life-changing decision: should they elect Pete George as the town mayor and a ward councillor?

The election results indicate that Pete George was an unpopular candidate:

– Mayor: Pete George came 6th (782 votes) out of 9 candidates. [removed by DPF]

– Ward councillor: Pete George came 22nd (342.208472979 votes – blame the 9 decimal places on the Single Transferable Vote system) out of 35 candidates. [deleted by DPF]

So why was Pete George such an unpopular candidate? This video shows why. It’s 5 minute 21 seconds long. After about 38 seconds, Pete George sends everyone to sleep. If you’re feeling lucky, and want a challenge, try watching the whole video!

  I have never looked at his website but just went and had a look. The lead article talks about geopolitics in 2019 from the view that NZ is some kind of impartial observer while extremism reigns elsewhere.
  I disagree, Jacinda Ardern has pushed us well and truly into the same currents and aligned us with Berlin. We have a proposed FTA that proposes that the laws in of our country on many areas will be in alignment with Brussels. She did a speech in Berlin pledging support for the concept of Open Borders. The Government has signed the Migration Compact and pledged per objective 17 for state of control the media on the issue.

      State controls what constitutes “evidence based”, and we really really trust the state to define that, don’t we.
      
      Same with discrimination, if one can define what discrimination actually is then you can control and criminalize anything. Let’s say that discrimination is inequality of outcomes, so all people must achieve the same “success” regardless of talent, application, and effort. Could do a lot with that, though ultimately the only way to ensure it would be to insist that everyone has nothing. Of course those imposing such rules would have to be exempt the provisions of equal sharing, but, hey, that’s just how it goes.

  I got to 2 minutes! The eyelid fluttering and head-jerks by various other candidates were the best parts – I’ve done that myself on occasion. Ironically, I think that Pete had some good points; the problem was in the delivery.

        Jim Salinger has lost his job after reportedly ignoring Niwa policy against speaking publicly without prior approval.
        
        (It seemed such an odd reason to lose your job in the NZ Public Service).
        
        Perhaps The then Minister of Science… Dr Wayne Mapp. could fill in the details…

    NIWA are scientists in name only. They are really taxpayer funded activists.
    
    A few years ago I asked NIWA for some data so that I could verify something. They refused to give it to me until the data had been “corrected”.
    
    I asked about raw data. They said they did not keep the raw data but discarded it after correction.
    
    That is a crime against science. You **never** destroy raw data. You need to preserve it in case you want to apply new models and filtering etc to it in the future.

  A PhD in climate change sounds akin to a PhD in Scientology. You have skipped the scientific arguments and jumped into the deep end of your belief.
  
  Socialist scientists tend to set about proving their gut feelings rather than trying to disprove a theory to legitimately argue a point.
  
  Speaking of PhD’s does anyone know what Dr. David Clark has a PhD in that somehow qualifies him to be minister of health. It’s right up there with useful degrees such as a PhD in the viscosity of my 3rd beer on the first Friday of a leap year.

    I have no objection to people using the honorific Dr if they have a PhD in anything EXCEPT for the Health Minister. If they call themselves Doctor it tends to be interpreted as being a medical qualification and Clark certainly doesn’t have that.

      I agree in general, although some doctorates are just weird (eg that of Dr Russel Norman). I have a friend who refuses to use that title even though she still works in the field. Her argument is that her PhD thesis is now so out of date it’s irrelevant. You can guess that her ethics are beyond reproach..

  If we accept everything the climate change zealots tell us, we’ve ‘locked in’ at least 1.5 degrees C of warming in the next century or so – it’s coming no matter what we do. We’ve ‘locked in’ droughts, floods, and coastal erosion. So, if we accept all of of this, we have more immediate concerns than trying to undo this climate change. Money spent on trying to undo this climate change is money wasted (because it’s ‘locked in’). If we’re going to spend money, it should be spent on more immediate concerns, like _adapting_ to the climate change.
  That way, it doesn’t matter if you think humans are responsible for the climate change, or if you think humans can undo the change, because the money spent is being spent on something practically everybody agrees with (i.e. the climage changes).
  Many (most?) ‘deniers’ don’t _deny_ climate change at all. If they have any brains at all they know that climate changes/varies all the time. This should be no revelation to anybody. Any ‘scientist’ that labels somebody as a ‘denier’ isn’t being a scientist, they’re being a cunty politician (or maybe just a cunt). An actual scientist would be able to calmly refute a ‘denier’s bizarre claims with actual evidence.

    globally ocean is only warming at 0.15°C per century (upper ocean at 0.3°C per century) – According to high accuracy Argo buoy system. Is atmosphere warms (currently at about 1.3°C per century, no sign of acceleration) it will inevitably have in increased ‘clamping’ effect that reduces the rate of air warming.
    
    Global warming as actually of benefit to NZ – improves agricultural output and rainfall, and 2mm/year of sea level rise doesn’t have any significant impact.

    cmm, few people remember [and no Maoris] that music is a Western creation and the 8 note harmonic scale and everything that results was brought to NZ by the missionaries with their Christian hymns.
    Prior to that, Maoris didn’t “sing”!
    With they way Treaty pay-outs have been going, perhaps there should be some “music payouts” to the rest of us every harmonic song they sing.
    
    Quite fascinating that composers like Mozart, Bach, Handel etc were busy in Europe composing
    some of the greatest songs ever written, but Maoris had only discovered a couple of notes and couldn’t even write them down.

      There was certainly music before musical notation and writing down of scores was invented. All peoples “discovered” singing and music, but certainly the current method used to write down music and most of the current western musical oeuvre is does indeed conform to a specific “European” invented scheme. I believe the first written musical scores are from 14th century or thereabouts, and in Northern Italy (makes sense at the start of the Renaissance).
      
      Potentially, in the same spirit as the Maori claims for ownership of names and spirituality, Europeans could claim the same over musical expressions in this canon.

      I’m fairly sure pre-colonial Maori would have sung and make music of sorts since:
      * Everyone else has done so (inc in Africa, Australia etc)
      * They did make rudimentary musical instruments (a whistle-like thing).
      
      But that music would certainly not have had any formal structure (scales etc) which are a European and Asian invention.

  With all the synthetic Te Reo words created for the modern world, it should be simple enough to develop an algorithm that can spit out Maori-sounding names for New Zealand business.
  The Japanese seem to use it for car names. For example:

  – Vitz
  – Laputa
  – Fuga
  – Legnum
  – Zenra

  Maori activists are feeling their oats. As there is is no Maori Nation per se the different tribes are open for exploitation by radicals. I read recently they wanted tikanga instead of our present legal system opening up historic grievances and present action to utu.
  
  What’s not accepted is that Maori and other Polynesian societies had an oral culture and recorded honours in ways which can be remembered. A place name can commemorate a historic significant brave event. We would not name a cheese factory after Winston Churchill or Sir Edmund Hillary without being aware that we were tramping on toes.
  I don’t see this as enforcing Maori culture but basic respect that other people regard some names as reserved with significant meaning attached. Money is not likely to ease the way.

    cmm, the problem with airports like Heathrow is that the runways are east/west with roads at either end. The roads are such that as planes are taking off or coming into land they are no more 25to 100 meters overhead if you are at either end of the runway. I kid you not that at the Western end of Heatgrow’s 2 runways you have plane spotters with very expensive technology parked up photographing planes as they take off. It would be all too easy to interfere with a plane from such spots.

    Drones could be devasting:
    
    FPV drones could be flown into cockpits or engines of planes just before they rotate during night time takeoffs – drone flyer knows where target will be to within a few 10s of square metres on runway (height and lateral location). With 5-10 gps guided drones arrayed across a runway (available off the shelf) you could take a big jet plane down launching from a car 10km away.
    
    If you had access to detonation cord then could hang long line of detcord under drone above end of runway with suitable trigger for when plane hits cord and it wraps around wing.
    
    A big acid spraying or grenade dropping drone (drop bombs on wing root) could take out most aircraft at an airport – do a few billion in damage in minutes.
    
    First person video (FPV) drones could be flown into wheel wells at night to clamp or glue themselves in and await airborne detonation. Airports are noisy, probably wouldn’t be noticed.
    
    But high speed rail is even more vulnerable – not just to drones, eg drop some heavy sheet metal on track just before train arrives. Or dangle a big heavy object from a bridge into its path. A few such derailments would probably spell end of high speed rail.
    
    Cruise ships are also very vulnerable a smallish boat with improvised ramming attachment or 5-10 limpet mines planted around water line at night…
    
    Or a paraglider dropping a 100kg nail bomb into a packed stadium…
    
    Or a van with a big high pressure steam filled boiler in the back, if broken open by a few shotgun shells it is essentially a huge bomb (no need to source explosives, just steel and a welder).
    
    Or a Concrete mixer driven through Xmas in the park…
    
    Or someone deciding to spread ebola to the west.
    
    It is impossible to anticipate and prevent all the myriad easy attack vectors. All we can do is focus on intercepting perpetrators and be thankful that the terrorists are mostly thick.

Not much comment from the Deputy PM but MSM and the Spinoff seem to be trying to push the story of him sueing the Crown for 1.8 million dollars for the release of his Pension details that made the headlines in July 2018. But then, what do you do about the inefficient aspects of Japanese production (namely farming)? Is it moral to throw rural communities under the bus so that people in Tokyo can buy cheaper American rice or Chinese vegetables?

    I am in principle in favor of freedom of trade and the liberalization and opening of markets. On the other hand, I have seen first-hand the destruction to commuities that can result in the opening up of markets and the removal of protection.
    
    It’s a tricky problem. No protection and rural communities wither and die. Too much protection and the communities develop a sense of entitlement and make no effort to modernize or increase efficiency.

Apparently Simon Doull isnt a Climate Change believer.

Stuff briefly had an article highlighting his off the cuff comments and even opened up comments on the article. Possibly the first AGW article that has allowed comments in months. The curious fact about the comments was, only alarmist comments were allowed. Some received over 50 down ticks, so you can imagine more than that were reading the comments and probably submitting their own views. However only 8 AGW comments got past the arbitrator as they agreed with the alarmist newspaper. So they closed the comments section.

It must infuriate them that so many readers disagree with their “end is nigh” belief

    Interestingly my kid was doing some research on global warming and gave up trying to google the “science” because all he got were alarmist articles. He could find the greenhouse effect but not a clear and concise explanation of the scientific theory of global warming; with feedback loops defined, hotspots identified and all verified by actual observations.
    
    He was also curious as to why theres not a discovers name attached the the theory. Like Newton’s laws. How come there isnt a great scientist lauded as the savior of the human race?

Pete George, I salute you and your efforts, even if I don;t share many of your views. The Standard may censor by literally cutting you out of the conversation, but I feel my moral and political values set the bar a tad higher than that.
I’m glad I was offered an opportunity to sneer (I made about 7 seconds into the speech – thanks to the gift of being Attention-Deficit ), but actually, this became an opportunity to laud someone who is at least prepared to get off his arse and give it a go.

It dawned on me when the NZ media started ramping the stories when Trump was on the campaign trail that he was up there with the most evil human beings in history.
  
  The NZ media frenzy about Russian involvement in elections overseas but very lazy about looking into some unusual meetings here.
  
  Then we had “Jacindamania”. What the hell is that and who is pulling the strings and coordinating the media? Why is she untouchable?
  
  The NZ media after deriding Nigel Farage every day for years have a coordinated blackout of his visit here in September. Weird!
  
  The media have been tearing Simon Bridges apart from the day he stepped into the job. Why is that? A youthful leader, inexperienced and now getting the blame for all decisions made by the National Government in the last 30 years.

I had what I can only describe as an epiphany last night.

In 1979, Monty Python released Life of Brian. It was roundly condemned by Arch Conservatives like Mary Whitehouse, Malcolm Muggeridge and our own Patricia Bartlett for it’s content.

One of my favourite parts of that movie is when we are introduced to the Peoples Front of Judea, where Stan is ridiculed for wanting to have babies and be known as Loretta.

It struck me that this narrative, in this day and age, would be roundly condemned by what I now refer to as “The New Puritans” who are governed not by faith, but politics.

They are just as bad, but are now armed with the greatest weapon known to those intent on social change. Social Media.

The Bartletts, Whitehouses and others were easier to ignore in the 70’s. Put one foot wrong in this day and age and there are thousands of people who will happy line up and publically destroy you in a matter of hours.

We must fight the New Puritan Movement, or at least help them to take a joke.

The current system works fine.

Moderation by hand is a time consuming task. It doesn’t scale. The only way to do it on a blog this size is with rules and a community feedback mechanism.

The number of comments show how successful this strategy has been. The conversation in here flows freely and there is wide leeway where even left-wing trolls can get heard, albeit later hidden, if they are not adding anything to the discussion.

Will some people be silenced under such a system? Yes, but given the parameters, you really have to run very wide, and have done so over time in order to build a poor reputation. You should take it as a signal that this isn’t the home for you and you may find your audience elsewhere.

  We got turned down for a home loan once for having 4 kids….despite having almost 50% deposit.
  We eventually got around it by saying our eldest was staying with relatives.

Hamilton assault accused granted bail, loses suppression

A Hamilton 26-year-old charged with assaulting a man who later died has lost his bid for name suppression. … [The man’s lawyer] told Judge Paul Mabey QC his client was keen to pursue name suppression due to a furore over social media since his arrest that a man had died and he had only been charged with assault. However, the judge reminded Tran that to qualify for further name suppression the applicant had to endure “extreme hardship”. After a short break, [the lawyer] abandoned the bid and the suppression lapsed.

At first I was wondering why the victim died but there was only an assault charge. Then I read on:

]The] Police prosecutor … said police were awaiting further forensic reports before deciding on whether to lay any further charges.

So potentially a more serious charge like manslaughter may follow.

But, getting back to the name suppression issue, there seems to be an increasing trend for people to claim name suppression on some ground relating to social media. If the test is “extreme hardship”, then there surely wouldn’t be many cases (if any) where social media creates extreme hardship grounds.

And in relation to the Grace Millane case:

The man applied for interim name suppression when he appeared in the Auckland District Court for his first appearance on Monday. Despite Judge Evangelos Thomas refusing to grant the application, the man’s lawyer, Ian Brookie, indicated he would appeal the decision to the High Court – invoking an automatic 20 working day suppression order.

I believe (on a quick calculation) that the 20-working-day period ends tomorrow. If he doesn’t file an appeal application, then his name won’t be suppressed.

Sure. Let’s all agree NZ makes no difference to global climate, so as the climate and weather patterns change, as they always do, we adapt. Yeah, didn’t think so.

Or they may pay it no mind at all, as it passed into history.

      I have stop started my computer refreshed in case a bug had come through, but to no avail.

The British legal profession is stained by members’ witch hunts against British servicemen, especially those in Iraq.

Behind the Iraq witch hunt, the British legal firm, Leigh Day, has been paid in legal costgs the British equivalent of 20.8 million NZ dollars by the British Ministry of Defence over 330 civil claims of alleged mistreatment of Iraqi civilians by British servicemen. The co-founder and head of the firm, Martyn Day, has told a British Parliamentary committee that he expected to succeeed in about 475 more cases.

The Ministry has already paid $NZ37.8 million to Iraqi claimants.

Day admitted to the Parliamentary committee that he had never visited Iraq, and that of his firm’s 500 staff only one member had ever travelled to the country, and on only one occasion.

As well as the civil cases pursued by Leigh Day, veterans have faced criminal investigations over Iraq. Cases were brought by disgraced human rights lawyer Phil Shiner, who represented Iraqi clients some of whose claims of abuse were later found to be lies. Shiner was struck off for dishonesty after being found guilty of a series of allegations of professional misconduct. A series of criminal inquiries into hundreds of British troops in Iraq was closed down.

British veterans who served in Northern Ireland are also under investigation for incidents that occurred as long as 40 years ago.

An interesting item on the wireless just now about garment workers in Myamar.
The poor sods who earn only a few dollars a day, that is to say about three or four, have been going on strike.
I don’t know if any stuff from that country winds up in NZ, but it would be interesting if any of the big name brands are thinking of producing a pamphlet with a break down of the retail cost of their clothing?
I remember a few years ago someone claimed that AB jerseys that retailed for way over a hundred bucks only cost eight dollars to make in Bangladesh.
Of course the figures on those pamphlets can manipulated to show, in the BP example, the taxman in a bad light. Their one shows 44% for tax, which is fair enough, but that includes 13% for GST that is charged on everything. Also it doesn’t say what their profit is, just lumped it in with something else that may be miniscule. BP also makes a profit from other facets of the production.
So if you buy an Adidas AB jersey don’t expect them to ever tell you that they paid thrupence to some wretch somewhere to sew it together.

    My original mother in law was a skilled seamstress way back. She also made loads of clothes for my then wife and later for our daughter after she retired.
    She was paid peanuts and after forty years had nothing in the bank. One of her workmates left and got some cleaning job or whatever and made more money.
    I’ve never forgotten that. I had no idea had little she was paid. I don’t think she did either.

The mark, qualifying a traditional Roman alphabet character, and similar marks on other letters, are known as diacritics. Modern Maori language uses diacritics, notably the bar over a letter as in “Māori”. It calls this diacritic a tohutō, while in English it is a macron.

A poster pointed out on Kiwiblog a day or two ago that “Chloe” was spelled by some authors in English a long time ago as Chloё, which indicated the “e” was pronounced separately from the “o”.   Heroin isn’t strong enough anymore and Carfentanil, (a grain can kill a person but is usually mixed with Oxy) is dropping addicts like flies.
  I’m fairly familiar with a rehab facility in Sonoma County 🙂 for addiction and PTSD treatment. Out of a 30 bed facility there have been three deaths of graduates recently due to ingestion of the shit currently hitting the streets in the Bay Area. One guy came in and pissed dirty for Carfentanil for 12 days.
  It’s bad. Real bad and Trump is attempting to curtail the scourge. By making it inaccessible and boosting funding for treatment.
  Good on him and shame on the Dems.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has hired a security firm to increase staff skills in using fake social media profiles to gather intelligence.

Among the modules offered are harvesting information from social networks, creating back-stories for false online personae and creating dossiers on people and groups.

When informed of the training by the Herald, Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones said senior ministers would be briefed on the issue when they returned to work at the end of the month.

“Kiwis should be able to go about their daily business without the fear of bureaucrats peering into their social media,” he said.

Serious questions need to be asked of the government over this. Unfortunately, as Jones notes, they’re all on holiday until the end of this month, by which time he hopes the issue will have died a natural death.
