  Winston and Shane need all the cash for their fast trains from Northland to Auckland so don’t expect more money to be dished out for necessary four lane motorways as the bribe to Northlanders is in play. The money they have put in place with their feasibility study would probably stop hundreds of fatalities on our roads but getting Winston back in Parliament at the 2020 General Election comes first.

Short week so only four inbound commutes.

Two journeys delayed by traffic issues. Todays was a bus broken down on the southbound motorway at about Symonds Street with hopeful southbound traffic backed up to the harbour bridge.

Scene reminiscent of a Soho strip club; flashing lights and men standing around with their hands down their pants pretending they are not them, big blob (of a bus) on the centre stage doing nothing with zip appeal.

Farcical.

Auckland Transport; fucking up the commute since forever.

    In 1990 people voted Labour out, not National in.
    The country were smart enough to see how bad Spud was as PM and with a more level playing field in 1993 he was brought back to earth.
    In 1990 National received 47.82% of the vote and Labour 35.15%
    In 1993 National plunged 13 seats to 35.05% against Labour’s 34.68%.
    In 1993 Peters First got 8.4% ….so better than today!
    Anderton in 1993 picked up 18% in the pre MMP protest vote era.
    
    A mate of mine who worked as lawyer in the Ministry of Labour in the early 1980s was rather incredulous that Bolger had acceded to PM. His view was that Bolger was not very bright.
    Bolger reminds me of the Team America movie.
    Get an actor to do the job.

    They are not very bright but will follow a script.
    
    Rob Campbell and Bolger really have done a role swap since the 1980s.
    To be fair, Bolger is really just showing his Irish catholic socialist views that were always there, just resting.
    His true character showed more than 10 years ago when after selling off NZ Rail in the 1990s in a dreadful deal for taxpayers (as with most of his Govt Asset sales) he accepted the role as Chairman if Kiwirail. His first job was to parachute in one of his catholic mates as CEO from right outside Rail. This did not go well.

The new EU murmurings about dramatically reducing access to the EU markets for our Beef and Lamb have been very under-reported in the MSM.

On Monday, on Breakfast, Simon Bridges was asked about Jacinda’s free Trade Talks. Bridges said that we should wait and see what the final result should be.

Jack Tame then berated him about not giving credit where it’s due and that the result was a trade continuation.

Well, it turns out Simon was correct. Jacinda has achieved nothing. In fact, she has achieved less than nothing, and the media remains silent.

        @marcw: Sorry but I can’t agree with you that there are too many people on the planet at all. The continued growth of population is absolutely necessary for the advancement of the species in terms of life expectancy, quality of life, medical advances etc. Just as in Attenborough’s much worshipped ‘natural world’, successful species grow and thrive and humanity is no different in any way.
        
        Humans’ comfort, health, longevity and lifestyle benefits have increased exponentially with our population growth and Attenborough’s wet dream would drag humanity back into the pre-industrial age.
        
        Forget the pictures of crowded Tokyo and Beijing for a minute and consider that on most of the planet’s land surface there’s literally hardly anyone there. The earth is simply not overpopulated.

        It’s hard to reconciliate that statement with the hordes risking drowning to cross the Mediterranean from Africa to Europe, or from India to Australia (and soon, New Zealand).
        
        It’s hard to reconciliate it with the plastic garbage in the ocean, and discarded rubbish being shipped across oceans to be dumped.
        
        It’s hard to reconciliate it with tropical forests being felled, wiping out wildlife, to make way for more agricultural land to feed rising populations.
        
        It’s hard to reconciliate it with the overfishing of our oceans.
        
        With the spread of nuclear technology, however, it’s inevitable that war will eventually reverse population growth.
        
        I also question the view of Dave that humanity “progress and lifestyle” is related to population growth.
        
        It’s more related to technology development and business initiative. That’s why the Industrial Revolution began in England, not in India, or China.

        And, our population growth has increased dramatically with improvement in health (especially child mortality) and longevity. I’m not sure that you have the causality in the correct direction.

        But it isn’t just an issue of housing them – you must have the resources to feed them, water them, and supply them with energy and materials. And there’s a reason some of those places don’t have many people living on them. I don’t know what a sustainable human population size is or how rapidly that limit should be approached, but it isn’t infinite and now seems as good a time as any to give it some careful consideration.

    I was talking on the phone last night to a friend in the UK and, out of curiosity, I asked her whether people in the UK were aware of Ardern. The answer was that a few people might be aware that Ardern had a baby, but that was about all.
    
    The only NZer with much of a profile is Peter Jackson. That’s ok by me. At least he does good stuff and creates wealth.

      It is exactly the same situation in Australia.
      
      What was interesting for me while in Australia at Christmas was that people were very aware of the deportation of New Zealand criminals and supported it. Even a couple of my lefty family members. I doubt this policy will materially change if Labor wins the election, which is of course very likely.

  I think the UK Prime Minister has much to worry about at the moment other than a future trade relationship with NZ.
  
  Too many possible scenarios. e.g. if there is a hard brexit and UK lamb and beef farmers lose tariff free access to the EU, the UK domestic market will be flooded with previously exported product. Under that scenario the UK may import less beef and lamb from New Zealand. Of course that depends very much on whether the UK is going to let many of its farmers go bust without access to the CAP.
  
  The point is that a ?20 minutes meeting with the UK Prime Minister at this juncture would have given no worthwhile assurances about a future UK trading relationship with NZ.

Mr Twyford’s new urban authority to be able to acquire private land for Kiwibuild without consent of the owner. No problem though, the owners will be able to take up some sort of share in the development as part compensation, hahaha.

How about the new authority starts with acquiring government and council land rather than interfering with private property rights.

Golf courses, parks, DOC land, green belts, council buildings demolished or converted to apartments, how about acquiring a roadside strip from every school for a row of terrace houses. Sell these to teachers, they can walk out the back door and be at work, no car park or garage needed. They’ll be lining up ….

Did I mention golf courses?

Recent media articles indicate that the roughly 70,000 shortfall in affordable homes, mainly because of unchecked immigration, will indeed soon rise to about 80,000.

So when Kiwibuild promises to build 100,000 homes in total but so far
• the number of people who have registered an interest in the KiwiBuild programme is only 47,853 and
• of that number, the unique applications that have successfully completed the pre-qualification process is 289 and
• the number of KiwiBuild homes that have been sold to eligible KiwiBuild purchasers is 53
does it not indicate the entire approach is wrong and no amount of “recalibration” will fix it?

One major problem with Kiwibuild is Twyfordism: uttering so many contradictory statements that no one can any longer understand what is arse up.

  To be fair to Shane, he is referring to the financial year, 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019. He always included the 50 million planted by the private sector in his 100 million per year. So if he says 60 million have now been planted, well he is on track to achieve the 100 million.
  Very different to Twyford who has woefully failed even his own modest target of 1000 houses in the financial year. The biggest failure of any government for many years.

    The COL Govt’s objective is to plant 1 billion MORE trees. That is we should not count the replanting from the private sector because their planting are part of a farming programme which replaces felled trees.     They are re-plantings. They are in anticipation of what Forestry will harvest.
    They re-plant about 50 million trees and cut down about 48 million.
    There is only about 2 million difference.
    
    Shane is supposedly planting 100 million a year to remain long enough to sequester a little CO2.
    
    If he is going to add in Forestry’s replanting total, is he going to subtract what they yearly chop down as well?

    Tree planting had already increased to 70m trees last year in response to demand for replanting of harvested forests, as the “wall of wood” from a peak planting in 1994 reached maturity.
    
    Which contradicts Shane’s claim: This year we exceeded the planting goal, with over 60 million trees planted.
    
    Perhaps National could do the obvious, ask Shane in a Written Question, how many trees have been planted under his programme, and where are they?
    That is information he should readily have to make any of his claims, or check his own progress.

      That is essential information… especially for the Native species that get planted.. as they require a lot more maintenance than Pines.
      
      I’m currently trying to compile information on just how successful native plantings have been throughout the East Coast. Some of these plantings have been done with public money… (council plantings/Erosion grants/DoC plantings)… but it’s not going to be an easy task tracking down the details.

        Depends how you want to interpret/measure economic return.
        
        In the sense that a native cover of trees on easily erodible land represents a partial insurance against future costs to the Government/taxpayer from damaged roads, bridges, telecomms, polluted waterways, silted estuaries, etc… then yes.
        
        In the short-term to a land-owner (i.e. 25-30 year Pine cycle), then, No.
        
        But over a longer time-frame.. 50-70 years, a well managed stand of totara, rewarewa could be worthwhile on marginal hill country (N.I).
        Puriri, Tawa, Kahikatea, kauri, tanekaha and Rimu could also be profitably grown at certain locations.
        
        Add in potential for honey production, ecotourism,
        rongoa, hunting…. then it’s possible that some folks could make a return on land left to revert or helped along with enrichment plantings.

Yvette, I can add to your Shane Joneisms (& you just need to add in the snake oil salesman also referred to the Toxic Gnome).

According to Newshub as published on MSN the upgrade of the railway line between Northport & Auckland is getting closer. It seems they’ve done the geotech report and identified what needs to be done. Well, that’s about as reassuring as the SLG telling us about how Twitford will achieve 100k Kiwibuild homes.

How about instead of wasting $1bn on a project that benefits only Northport (do I smell some dead fish here?), they do the following:

1. Prepare a detailed economic analysis and strategic plan for the Northland region -working with Northland’s public & private interests. In such a plan they need to identify how future economic development can/should be achieved and sustained. That is a proper blue print for investment by both government and private sectors.
2. Only then should the government start investing in transport infrastructure, and it almost certainly wouldn’t be a rail line between Northport and Auckland.

When are frauds like Peters & Jones going to be called out by the media for squandering taxpayers’ money on projects that are designed to benefit them electorally & some of their business backers? Such investment will not benefit NZ, they are being politicians first and foremost, they are not fulfilling their warrants in the interests of New Zealanders as a whole.

Northport aren’t interested in rail, Jon Moore their CEO pointed out that in they can’t make rail work in the UK which is a similar size but far flatter and has a population of sixty five million why would you think it would work here? Even if you did get it going you would only get as far as Helensville anyway – apparently the tracks through Auckland have very little spare capacity.

    In Auckland, the friends of Genter know this and are lobbying for a third track from Wiri through the city to the Northwest.
    
    The rail line in Northland has never been economic. If, you read about the history of the line, in the 19th and early 20th centuries businesses found it cheaper to ship goods to Auckland via Sydney. It may not be the same today but the taxpayer will be required to provide a massive subsidy to support the operation of the line.
    
    When are people like Peters and Jones going to learn/realise NZ is a country of 5mill people, spread out over a land area the size of the British Isles, with a GDP smaller than Singapore, so we have limited economic resources to squander on projects that will cost rather benefit the NZ economy? Peters & Jones are ministers of the crown, which means they are meant to act in the interests of all New Zealanders, not just their own political interests. This is a case of pork barrel and nothing more!

      Couldn’t agree more. I work with a lot of companies in the Ruakaka / Marsden Point area so I’m fairly up on the politics out that way. For some reason the Ruakaka Economic Development Group which is basically a bunch of land owners, developers and large companies fawn over NZF and Shane Jones in particular. They even had him as guest speaker at their last BA5 at Marsden Cove. I had the misfortune to go to that, the man is a blow hard and a buffoon. NZF are desperate to get an electorate seat up here and will do anything to make that happen. They don’t give a damn about us it’s about their survival and money doesn’t matter. If they had any brains they would have kept the highway going but I don’t think they are that bright or too lazy or scared to start a punch up with the Greens.

        The key factor may be that Aucklanders are beginning to want their harbour back from Auckland, and Marsden Point is the best natural deep-water port in the country.
        
        Overseas, ports have been moving away from cities.
        
        Marsden Point might yet end up being the country’s main import port, with its part-owner Port of Tauranga, remaining the key export port.

        The only people who truck that line out are the Transport Blog, commentators (like Simon Wilson, Hooton), Goofy & others.
        
        All you need to do is look at the history of the waterfront to see it is a nonsense.
        
        The waterfront back to Fort Street is reclaimed mangrove mud flat (like over between the Northern motorway & Bayswater), the wharves were completed in the first 2 decades of the 20th century (& were working wharves) & Tamaki Drive was constructed in the 1930s.
        
        So, when you look at the history of the Auckland waterfront, it never was a “peoples’ promenade by the sea”.
        
        Auckland needs its wharves and to move them would be monumental economic vandalism!

        TN, why am I not surprised by what you write. If there is free money going, of course the Ruakaka Economic Development Group will prostitute themselves. It is an area that has always been something of a backwater between Whangarei & everywhere else with only the refinery until the port opened up. The strange one we couldn’t work out was the Marsden Cove development (the Hopper family). We couldn’t work out was it a commuter estate or another holiday type resort – only in the shadow of the refinery & the port.
        
        What that area, Whangarei and further North require is a proper development plan. But that seems to be beyond Peters & Jones.

    DN15, it depends on how their practice was set up. If they rent rooms from an administrator the staff and rent costs will come out of their takings. They will usually have a nurse to do the ACC follow up treatments and blood pressure testing, as well as arranging blood tests. On top of this the doctor will have ongoing compliance training and forever changing government rebates. Being confined to consultation rooms most of the day is not the best for your fitness levels.

  One of the reasons the NHS in UK is in deep financial doodoos is this very policy – no “cost” for patient visits. The result is massive wastage of time and money for people who are worried well or just turn up to socialise as it’s “free”. It’s good to keep fees at an affordable level (depending on individual circumstances), but making high cost services available for free just bankrupts the whole health service as too many people abuse the privilege.

Hmm, I am wondering what is happening to the schools here…

First, the Govt scraps the charter schools, where it’s been shown kids do really well.

Then, comes the proposal for so-called “school hubs”, described by Avondale College principal as “real Stalinist stuff”, and which Auckland Grammar Headmaster said needed to be “resisted at all costs”. It would take most decision making processes out of the hands of parents.

After that, the proposal for scrapping school reports.

Now, the Breakfast show is running a poll asking if all school uniforms should be exactly the same.

      The other little trick that is obvious once you spot it is the different measures of temperature that get used depending upon circumstances.
      When it is hot days and cool nights then the peak temperature is used. When you have cloud cover that gives cool days and less cool nights then the average temperature is used, so even though it may have felt cold to you it was still “warmer than normal” because the nights were not as cold.
      The other is how every warm patch gets trumpeted as proof of agw but every cold spell is just weather.
      I liked Scott Adams’ comment that his suspicions were triggered by the fact that the behaviour mimics that used by confidence tricksters, making him ask the question, if it is not a confidence trick then why are those tactics being used?

Up to $14 billion worth of council-owned assets across New Zealand – not to mention the costs to central government and private interests – are at risk from sea level rise, according to the first report linking council infrastructure and climate data.

The report by Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) is the first of its kind, showing how much infrastructure – including water and road infrastructure, buildings and facilities – would be exposed if the sea level rises by 1.5 metres.

Water infrastructure was the most costly to replace nationally, exceeding the total cost of building and roading infrastructure at risk. At sea-level rise of 1.5m, the estimated cost of replacement is $4bn.

      And as Maggy alluded to, include city/borough/county engineers.
      Until 30-40 years ago it was usual for councils to appoint a town clerk and an engineer who both reported equally to Council and who ran separate departments in councils.
      There seems to be a discrepancy in the way asset management plans are done. A sound asset management plan should identify when in the future assets or classes of assets need renewal or refurbishment with a forecast of future expenditure requirements. There seems to be a concern that the assets are thought to be in a better state than they are in practice. Seems Local Government Commission and others seem to think assets are in a poorer state than asset management plans indicate implying that refurbishment / renewal could be beyond the resources of councils unless they are aggregated into large units. There is BS being talked about this somewhere – not sure where.

        Captain – insurers do not aim for ‘zero risk’ but insurers are not happy with carrying more risk than they calculated for, nor where they are vulnerable to moral hazard. For general insurance (ie not life) insurers will not pay out for something that is inevitable. The likely scenario for coastal properties is at some point the insurer will decline cover at annual renewal if the insurer thinks the risk is becoming to great.
        What could be problematical is if foreign based re-insurers get jumpy and start redlining whole markets.

  Kiwibuild has morphed into a scheme to underwrite spec builders. Not unreasonable if the underwriting premium matches risks. That premium would be the difference between assessed market value and the lesser price the govt is willing to pay.
  
  It’s hard to tell if such a scheme would have much impact on housing developers. Such development has always been risky and a buyer of last resort could help avoid the catastrophic flow on effects of the bankruptcies which occur. Well implemented it may help spur building development but industry consultation is desirable.
  
  Kiwibuild as promoted was a vision: in the hands of incompetents the reality a nightmare. Fixing a shortfall of accommodation surely starts with consideration of immigration and engaging the whole community tasked with supply, production and labour. That’s National Govt territory.

  There are already over 10,000 Kiwibuild homes under contract, and some of the few ready to sell so far are not attracting buyers.
  
  Depends on what is in the contracts, but a new government will be bound by them or have to buy them out. I can see Mr Twyford doing his absolute utmost to get as many under contract as possible to commit a future government to delivery and more importantly pay up.
  
  Fortunately there will be a massive backlog of state housing applicants to live in these homes, so the government (taxpayer) will buy the unsold ones. Not sure how many state house applicants want to live in Wanaka, but a few will be deliriously happy.
  
  I wonder if taxpayers are aware that we subsidise state house rents by an average of just on $300 each and every week.

  Looking at the housing issues we’re currently facing these are the 3 options we’re going to have to choose from.
  
  1)Heavily invest in social housing and provide a decent level of housing at an affordable rate.
  
  2)Crash the property market and bankrupt NZ.
  
  3)Move away from a democratic system to shield the country from hostile and angry voters.
  
  Option two will never happen so that leaves 1 and 3.

  They have all the fervor of a Baptist Revivalist meeting, as you can imagine. There is a lot of speaking in tongues, some healing through prayer and after baptising a number of the faithful in the Wairoa river, Simon walks over to the Mount, without using the bridge, to tear off a sermon. I think loaves and fishes make an appearance at some point, and it must all work as I haven’ t seen a leper round town since Winston’s days.

    At the meeting I went to, he spent 10 minutes summarising himself and National, then spent 50 minutes answering questions from the floor.

      I too went to a public meeting, at Waikanae, to hear Simon Bridges.
      
      I came away quite impressed to tell the truth: sound bites on the radio and TV do not do him justice, he is intelligent, articulate, well-prepared and affable.
      
      The meeting was packed out ( yes, most of us were elderly but as far as I know that is not yet a crime ) and both Simon Bridges and Nathan Guy answered all questions promptly and respectfully.

  @DigNap… Sit nice and close so you can ask questions. He is happy to answer the hard ones. I made the mistake of being late and having to stand at the back of the hall (with my questions ready) Be persistant and even standup so the moderator can see/choose you and allow you sensible questions on NZ’s behalf.
  However, people with personal grievances with ACC, WINZ etc tend to go hard out at the question time. Prepare to be amazed at the wacky tales from them.

I have decided to focus on my productivity today. Absodludely.

I am going to recalibrate everything I own, to make sure that it cannot ever be held accountable as being my fault. Especially the dishwasher. That now is the cats job.

Mowing the lawn now requires 10% or 1,000 individuals blades of grass to agree with the terms of being cut. That’ll never happen.

Above all I am going to feel absoludely positive that any fuck-up, irritation, evidence is not my problem. The Union of Self Serving Lazy Bastards will look after me as I await my glorious KiwiBuild man cave to be built.

  JB hasn’t yet clicked that sheep cycle at about 17 day intervals & will normally only stand for the ram for approx 30 hours. To complicate things ewes aren’t very interested in courtship other than from late February to May or conception…..whatever happens first.
  
  But he’s getting too old for the rigours of mating stigie. My rams were expected to do the decent thing by 50 ewes apiece & by the end of the season they were absolutely, dog tucker knackered.
  
  The life of a Wainuiomartian cyber shepherd is not a happy one! 🙂

I made the mistake of buying a Chinky F&P dishwasher just over 2 years ago. It’s baskets are all rusting out as the plastic coating on them has shit itself. I’ve had F&P stuff for years being a good patriotic Kiwi but never again. I’ll go European next time. NZ/Chinky industry…..A race to the bottom of the sewer. Good luck to the slittys when they take on Trumpie in the South China sea. Hope they have AA membership to get their broken crap back to Bejing! 🙂

  Heck, I’ve had the same dishwasher for 40+ years…admittedly he’s getting a bit rusty around the gills and his hairline is in recession.
  I’m quite attracted to some of the new versions on the market, but can you trust them not to break down after a year or so?

  Installed a LG dishwasher when we moved here and it went great for 11 years until the door fell to bits. Replaced it with a Bosch which does the dishes beautifully but the washer motor got noisy after one year and has just been replaced under warranty. Fingers crossed.
