National just needs a few tweaks to be back in the game.

1. Demonstrate a balance between fiscal responsibility and social conscience.

2. Get someone to front the party that the average dimwit voter is going to like. Labour did it, so can they.

All National need to do is be a bit more caring about the average Kiwi, not just their rich mates, and get a likeable leader. Key did a reasonable job and was insanely popular as a result.

        The poll question for ‘preferred PM’ is an open question in that the pollster does not read out a list of names. So the PM and immediate past PM (if still in politics) will come out head and shoulders above the others. As far as the others are concerned the results have much to do with how the media portray them. So the results are basically meaningless.

  It’s because fiscal responsibility is not at the very core of National’s belief. At the core is uncontrolled growth, and so any control with which to serve social conscience, or environmental concern, is firmly put in the back seat. National’s core policies actively work against social responsibility and care for the environment.
  
  It’s like English’s so called social investment approach – how can you claim to be working towards lifting people out of negative cycles when all your other policy actively creates negative cycles?
  
  So to the lip service toward Maori under their coalition. How can you, with the Maori Party, claim to be addressing poor social statistics for Maori while all other economic policy actively disadvantages Maori?
  
  And the environment. The ‘Blue/green’ conference yesterday still promotes dairy expansion and poor choices for water management and nitrate use, all in the name of fuelling business.
  
  It’s always business first and vulnerable people and a defenceless environment second with the National Party.

I think it’s very brave of our current Govt to admit they are useless at managing our money.
Why else would they need to raise Taxes when clearly they get enough from us now.
Don’t believe it?
The DHBs are $300 million short but our Govt thinks spending $700 million on working groups is a more important priority.
Maybe the Govt should contract out managing the Country- to National. (Bring Back Bill)

We don’t need new Taxes. Keep our system simple.
Stop wasting our money.

    Now that Vernon Tava has emerged with a new Green Party, he should stand in the West Coast.
    The Nats do well with the Party Vote there.
    I’d have to wonder if Tava , with support from Nat voters, could take enough off Damian OConnor to win the Seat and provide the base his Party needs.
    Makes sense strategically, but of course the Nats would have to endorse Tava and stand their candidate down…
    Btw, I’m happy the Nats didn’t go with that lying prick Peters and his cabal of fools.

      To win the West coast, Tava would have to speak favourably of native logging and mining. Now I have no problems with the latter and would dearly love to specify a lovely rimu ceiling for my new home, but I suspect these are a bridge too far for someone with ‘Green’ credentials to win any party vote in the rest of the country.     Count the seats. National won 56 seats, Labour 46.
    
    Because:
    1. National put principle ahead of rolling over for Peter’s, they are in opposition. Remember Nats + ACT + NZF would have been 66 seats to Lab + Greens = 54
    
    2. Instead we have a CoL held together by dodgy secret deals and Winnie and the SLG playing squirrels with poorly conceived legislation eg the Employment Relations Amendment Act – clauses in this bill will mean unemployment will rise later this year and private sector employers will be forced to increase charges because of clauses in this bill increasing the cost of employment. Yet everybody was led to believe the most important clauses were the retention of the 90 day probation hiring period, they weren’t!
    
    I’m glad National are not in govt with NZF, because it will give me satisfaction to be part of a campaign to make NZF extinct next year!

        The real problem is Labour’s 9 years of policy neglect, they don’t have a rational course of action planned, so they’re reverting to ideology.

Any CGT that excludes the family home is UNFAIR. It penalises those who cannot afford, or choose not, to buy a house but instead provide for their retirement through Kiwisaver. Labour has yet to propound a logical reason for the exclusion of the family home. The reason is simple. They can’t. It is a purely political decision which, contrary to their talk of fairness, unfairly penalises the large numbers of New Zealanders who cannot afford a home.
So much for looking after the less fortunate.

    Technically not, as core functions of government are things like the military (to keep out invaders).
    
    It’s when you get into entitlements that I start agreeing with you. We decry that we should have a separation of Church and State but somehow we never growl at the State’s intrusion into welfare/entitlements – which was historically the province of charities (including the churches).

    None of those points is completely accurate. Take the 4500m2 thing. It is only the land above that level that is subject to CGT. Likewise with the home office. If you don’t claim a deduction, there is no CGT. If you do, the CGT is apportioned.
    The argument over CGT has to be had, but it is not helped by alarmist disinformation

      What about the businesses that fail? There is often massive losses of capital involved. Owners can lose their homes. All this has to be taken into a comprehensive CGT.

    Because CGT reduces profitability for small business, largew business, tradies, etc etc it is inflationary.
    
    This will drive up the cost of:
    * Basic foodstuffs
    * Coffe
    * Healthcare
    * Wages
    
    Basically everything.
    
    AT the same time, expect those with the mobility and motivation (ie. skilled people who drive industry) to move. That means less jobs etc etc.
    
    CGT is supposed to reduce the costs of housing etc. Nope, it will drive them up!

Home Office: So all the small business people and consultants who have an office at home will now have to chose between CGT or not claiming annual expenses, of mortgage, rates, electricity etc. But if you do chose to continue claiming 15% of your house as an office, will the Council also then charge you commercial rates. And also what about people who rent and work from home, can they still claim their rent as an expense? They can’t in Australia it seems.

    Lets just take the working from home office situation.
    
    Business A works from home, claims deductions on the costs. Sells home/business and has to pay CGT on the proportion of the home used.( I am simplifying the situation for the sake of discussion because it could be the business is not sold at the same time as the home)
    
    Business B works from a rented office down town. It claims the costs involved in the rental , outgoings etc. Sells business and is not charged CGT on the office because obviously it how nothing to do with the ownership.
    Does not have much logic to it in my view.
    I thought the likes of James Shaw would encourage working from home so it helps reduce the dreaded emissions.

  Labour has yet to propound a logical reason for the exclusion of the family home.
  
  Labour isn’t propounding anything, the Tax Working Group is.
  
  That aside, there is a very logical reason for the exclusion of the family home: when you’re implementing policy that’s necessary but unpopular, you have to find the sweet spot where you can implement as much of it as possible without making yourselves so unpopular that it might lose you the next election.
  
  That logic applies as much to National governments as it does to Labour ones, but you never see it explicitly stated, for obvious reasons.
  
  In this instance, the TWG have (rightly, I believe) decided that including the family home in a CGT would be way beyond that sweet spot and impossible for a government to implement and survive, which means there’s no point in recommending to the government that they do it.

    It’s not the TWG who excluded the family home; it was specifically excluded by the Government in its terms of reference, as were death duties. However, the reason for excluding it remains the same: if a policy’s necessary but unpopular, you have to make judgement calls about how far you can push it, if you want your government to survive.

    We managed GST on food, unlike nearly every other country.
    
    A CGT if we must have one should be universal on all assets above a de minimis, say $10000, and a low rate. Excluding the family home will just cause more investment to pile into home improvements. And by low rate I mean 12 to 15 percent.
    
    The package could include a reduction in the top tax rate to 25 percent and indexation of tax thresholds.

        On your point… Government operating expenses are $10 billion a year. That could be cut by 10 pecent without raising a sweat. So that is about $7 billion.
        
        My first cut would be New Zealand on Air. $137 million a year.

  Most of those who cannot afford a home are likely to be Labour voters, so all that is needed is talk and little action.
  The votes that Labour needs to grab are from those who own their own homes. Hence o CGT on owner occupier homes would be political suicide.
  Similar for full CGT on Iwi assets. This would drive votes from Labour to the Maori Party (or similar) and unlike the Greens that party would have no compunction about supporting National if advantageous.

Someone yesterday was grizzling about the amount of money people sent to their families off shore.
It’s hard to find out, but the total sent to Samoa from all countries, not just NZ, is around $100mil.
Meanwhile tourists bring into NZ more than $11bil.
Not only that there are about a million Kiwis living abroad, some of whom send money back here for a variety of reasons.

When I was very young I don’t think it was possible to send money out of the country. Not only that you couldn’t use local currency to buy a new car.

    Back in the 60’s, when I was a lad, the only way to get money out of the country was by buying a 5 shilling (50 cent now) money orders from the Post office. I remember buying heaps of them to get what was called a car coat from Hong Kong. Cars didn’t have heaters back then. The only way to buy a new car then was by having “overseas funds”, eg local UK currency. My brother bought a Mini Copper this way. Life was difficult in this area back then.

      Yep, as a primary school kid, I used to work my arse off delivering papers in all weathers to save enough to buy lead soldier figurines from England.
      
      Then it was up to the Post Office to get a money order to send off with my order.
      
      A month or two later, if lucky, the figures would arrive, box ripped open by Customs and carelessly sellotaped back up and usually accompanied by some demand for extra (duty or sales tax) charges ‘to protect local industry’ of which we didn’t have.

        As I recall, for each car purchased on a non-remittance licence, eg by a farmer, the dealer could import another one. These were made available to “important” people such as doctors and ministers of religion. Those purchasers traded them back a year later at a profit and bought another one. Farmers had overseas funds and they could buy flash cars whenever they wanted. My old man used to drive big plymouths, dodges and the like all imported by Todds from England. When Ford bought out the first Zephers and Zodiacs he got a Zodiac.

        People used to fly to duty free Norfolk Island to buy stuff and smuggle it back. I remember the fuss when Tizard flew there and came back with a stereo which was detected. The joke going round was “knock, knock – who’s there? A: Tizard – Tizard who? A:Tizard to smuggle a stereo into NZ.
        I also remember the car coat from Hong Kong thing. I collected money orders from my meagre income, sent them off, never got the car coat. That was quite a loss for me at the time.

    When I was a child the money earned by farmers’ exports was what earned/comprised NZ’s overseas currency reserves. This was after the war in the late 1940’s. You could not use money held in NZ to buy overseas products without specific permission from the Reserve Bank.
    My parents wanted to buy a new car to replace their ancient old Oldsmobile. The wool that they sold earned UK pounds, so they had to use that money to buy a British made car, and pay for its shipping to NZ. It was a Daimler Conquest, and it had fitted suitcases in the boot – such elegance! My mother was devastated when the car arrived, and she found that the suitcases had been stolen somewhere during transit. And to add insult to injury, the replacement ones sent from the UK, didn’t fit the straps which were designed to keep the cases in place.
    In such small ways, the UK lost it’s reputation for fairness. We had all endured rationing as we supported the UK during the war – and this was how they rewarded us!

    Sooty – Those who had National Bank shares when it was Kiwi owned were lucky. Lloyds Bank (UK) progressively purchased the National Bank and paid out in UK Pounds. They used these Pounds to import a new car (or parts kitset) but then had to pay an outrageous amount of duty and sales tax on it. They had to keep the car one or two years before selling it and would sell it at a break even price or a slight profit.

    The deer were well into that forest before the eighties. Mates used to hunt there in the late 60’s.
    Possums are the problem as they are everywhere. you can probably add goats as well. But removing them would take away their cash cow.I think that Wairoa has the only goat killing works left on that coast.
    This is just a PR to get money to spend.

So I went along to hear Jordan Peterson last night. Interesting and insightful with more than a tinge of humor. At the end he answered some emailed questions including one asking about what advice he had for someone entering politics.

His response was “you’d better understand why you want to do this and determine what you’re good at and how much experience you have. Go out and live, have a career and a family. It’s the perspective these give you (especially raising a family) that enable you to truly benefit a country in the political system through experience and wisdom.” He further commented around by suggesting that the worst people to enter politics are the ideologues; who’ve done none of that and do everything based on their ideology without the grounding pragmatism of life experience. This he suggests always ends badly when reality eventually gets in the way.

An American woman sitting next to me leaned over and said “He’s just described your Prime Minister”.

    If you have read his book to the end, you will realise that he has used his extensive study of various religions, and the development of cultures, to gather together a picture of how ‘western’ culture has evolved.
    It’s not a 5 minute read. If you persevere, as a result you will spend a lot of time thinking when you come across some of the simplistic criticisms offered by the media pundits.
    And by thinking, it’s a natural follow-on that you will examine your own perceptions of what makes a good society and your own contribution to it. Things shift, ever so slightly, and personal (moral) decisions become a matter for serious thought. Living life is not simple, no matter what other people say.
    One interesting thing about the Peterson phenomenon is that while many people are discovering him, others are saying ‘what’s new?’

  Best tell the MSM especially the young ones that CGT is going to take 25% to 30% of their retirement funds along the way. That will wipe the smug smile off their faces.
  
  Example. A 25 yo with 40 years to 65 earning the salary a jurno earns and in a growth fund for most of the time as they should be would retire on around $500K in 2059. With CGT deducted that will be $350K to $375K.
  
  Reason, Every time the Fund Manager sells shares the Gumint will take 33% of the gains as CGT. Over 40 years the compounding effect adds up to a big number.
  
  Trouble is no one is taught compounding interest at school these days so they don’t understand how it works.

    Yeah, I know someone who worked in a decile 1 school. Free breakfasts for all sponsored by a large local manufacturer. The principal set up a system where the parents could pay the school directly for lunch to buy healthy sandwiches and wraps, avoiding the trap of kids spending cash on junk food in local shops.   I grew up with some very heart-warming stories of the sacrifices made and commitments shown by ordinary and very hard working NZ parents who wanted the best education for their kids – and in spite of the parent’s own very humble origins.
  
  Then, but only very occasionally, he’d mention some situations where he had to chase the very few parents who just would not pay their fees – the fees that they had agreed to pay in the first instance.

I went to the Jordan Peterson lecture last night at the Logan Campbell center. Apart from Dr Peterson spending a bit long pushing his religious views I found the lecture to be thoroughly entertaining, Dr Peterson was well deserving of the standing ovation he received at the conclusion of his lecture.
Two things struck me though, the first is that the Logan Campbell center is a dump that needs to be knocked down, the place is a shithole. Secondly, I spent the night sitting next to a Millennial who spent the entire two hours on his fucking phone. Who pays around $200 to attend a lecture then spend that time looking down at your phone for two hours? There should be a separate section (a bit like a creche) where Millennial’s can sit and play on their phones whilst the rest of us watch the show in glare free comfort.

  Not one article that I saw addressed his points, merely weak attempts at character assassination. Standing, helplessly, against the wave that came crashing down on their empty heads, as can be seen from the comments sections.
  
  Peterson isn’t for you, wokesters. Why even try insert yourselves into the debate?

  The point is that an increase in the value of the family home is just as much capital income as the increase in value of a Kiwisaver fund.     This is not about all one thing or another. There are a few loopholes that need looking at. Investment income should be taxed like any other.
    
    As for those who use the benefit as a lifestyle choice… my own views are very harsh. I would stop the single parent benefit (with 9 months lead in ) and provide a short term emergency benefit for genuine cases. Put far tougher requirements in for long term unemployed. They would be drug and alcohol tested regularly and randomly.

Hopefully the COL will follow all the TWG recommendations and like the TWG not realise the number of voters including Labour Green and NZF who will affected. Don’t assume all “Rich Pricks” vote National ACT.
There will be a significant number who when hit in their hip pocket will quickly change their vote even if only once to ensure that they keep their hard earned funds.
Alas I suspect the COL will water down the TWG recommendations for that reason to try and get as much extra tax to waste without losing enough of their voters to lose Election 2020.
But hopefully they will fail.

FAILURE PHIL strikes again.

Landlords have been given until July 2024 to ensure rental properties meet the Government’s healthy home standards.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced the changes in Wellington on Sunday which will require a minimum standard for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage in residential rental properties.

Twyford said nearly 600,000 households were rental properties but were of poor quality, compared to owner-occupied homes.

“It’s estimated about 200,000 families live in rental homes that do not have ceiling or underfloor insulation,” he said.

    Underfloor insulation: Floors lose only about 10% of heat.
    
    So, monthly electricity usage, excluding lighting, cooking, appliance use and hot water, say 25% for heating alone? Average winter power bill around $300 so 20% of heating is $60 and 10% is $6.00 per month saving and the 10% loss is for a completely open subfloor without sisalation or plastic covering on the ground.
    
    Allow 6 months of “winter” heatng so $36.00 per year saved so you should break even in approx 40 years….. This excludes any houses with sisalation or a concrete slab as they are already @ 90+% efficiency.
    
    Double everything above and you get payback in 20 years ish…

A cure for cancer? Now that would certainly be news … So, it’s no surprise the story soon made headlines all over the world. From the New York Post, whose report was syndicated to News.com.au in Australia, where it was followed up by every commercial TV network.

It’s interesting that ABC’s Mediawatch programme criticises cancer reporting and then, 2 weeks later, the same ABC reports (somewhat uncritically in my view) that wearing a red light on your head can help people with Parkinson’s disease.

  The thing I like about the red light bucket is that you can make your own, and it doesn’t look like there is some vested interest profiting out of it. I observed some special needs students testing equipment some years ago, and they found that coloured filters and films made quite a difference to their performance. Probably quite cheap to do a study on it too.

Considering they’re on a main highway/congested tourist route that was woefully inadequate for vehicles 15yrs ago, let alone now, and is also a steep windy mountain pass where the comical speed of the cyclists going up hill is ridiculous, maybe its time for some common sense to prevail, and remove cyclists from these dangerous stretches of road across the country until there is safe infrastructure for them to be catered for.

And yes, I am well aware that technically cyclists have every right to be on the roads with other vehicles, but when our tiny country’s state highways also double for our tourist trail, and is a absolute embarrasment of a road network, poorly maintained and woefully congested from lack of investment/upgrades to match population growth, then maybe a more common sense based approach is needed (without grinding the country to halt behind a cyclist doing 5-10kms uphill for example)

I acknowledge it can be a little different with investing in property but a risk is still involved (eg. crappy tenants costing you heaps) , cost of upkeep of the property , property markets do always go up or continue going up etc.
So Jack, go out and learn a little before you try to lecture us all about fairness.

  Perhaps when young Jack goes into business he will understand the value of capital to a business owner.
  People invest their life savings in their business along with funds sourced from banks, families and friends.
  It is a risk, a gamble, you stake everything on success.
  People will eventually sell their business for a variety of reasons, stress, health or time to get out. If they can make a profit on the sale of their business then that is a fair and just reward for the effort put in, the long hours, juggling income against expenses.
  It’s not easy, in fact many small businesses fail because of poor performance, a lack of cash flow.
  However for the successful folks you go on. You start another business or you expand and of course you need capital to do that, and that is where making a profit is essential.No profit, no growth.
  Likewise with homes.You sell and hope to profit so that you can trade up. A CGT will impact that, limit your opportunities. A CGT at the top marginal rate of 33% will stymie growth.

  The shop worker doesn’t borrow 300K on a mortage against putting their family at risk or have to sign a guarantee that way. The business owner has to take the risk also of paying the employee who steals time, stationery and other “perks”. The owners frequently will have less cash personally available for themselves than their individual workers–they must be paid next payday. The family will be supported by the spouse’s job.
  
  CGT applied wildly allows no reward for risk nor incentive to lose the family home if all does not go well. That includes the owner’s health which can cause a business to crash.
  The small bit passed onto the kids at the end has had tax paid on the income generated. Any surplus is fortunate but without it most businesses would not persevere. Try talking your wife into putting the home at risk to make only a modest fluctuating wage.

  Unless you have personally gone out and started your own business, and struggled through the tough times, then you have no idea what it takes and the cost of doing business. The fact that apparently 80% of start-ups fail is scary enough to put a lot of people off, let alone having to hand over a 2nd tax if you do somehow manage to beat those odds, and grow your business into something profitable.
  
  A lot of the time, once you factor in the real time a business owner spends working, its normally less than minimum wage, then the extra stress, worry, concern that impacts your mental and physical health over time, there really isnt much of a capital gain realized at all when the time comes to sell your business.
  
  But when the majority of the CoL have little to no experience in the real world as an employee, let alone an employer, of course they wouldn’t understand the realities of this, much like the generational benefit specialists, or the lazy with no real drive or desire to better themselves, who all think taking more from those who have put in that extra effort is much more ‘fair’ and easier for them.

  Given that they’d reject the premise of your question (that contributing to the upkeep of your society makes you poorer than you would be otherwise), there is no answer to it.
  
  However, even if we were to accept the false premise of the question for the sake of argument, it’s hardly conceivable that the proposal could make more people worse off than they were before. The majority of NZers don’t own investments they might have to pay CGT on, and the proposed accompanying income tax changes would benefit pretty much everyone with a taxable income.

  My parents encouraged all of us kids to do what ever we wanted to do in life. The only suggestion was to possibly look at getting a trade first so we’d always have something to fall back on in life if priorities changed….
  
  I stumbled upon my trade at 17, and 17yrs later I still love my job/trade and am self employed. No debt
  
  My sister, has failed to finish over half a dozen different courses, studies etc at various institutions, hat to think what her total student loan debt is currently…
  
  But I was always envious of the party atmosphere/enviroment of those at uni haha

    At least if my uni life had gone belly up.. I knew I could pick up work as a qualified gardener.
    The hubby is pretty useless on various practical outdoor skills… but I’ve never known him to be unable to fix anything mechanical or electrical.

Several people have been hospitalised after a gang fight at Ruapuna Speedway near Christchurch.

Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger said two gangs were involved in the fight at Ruapuna in Templeton, near Christchurch, just after midday on Sunday.

Some of the gang members were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.

Grainger said police did not tolerate such behaviour at public events.

“The actions of these criminal gangs are concerning and have made it unsafe for the general public, we would like to find out what happened and obtain evidence in relation to this offending,” he said.

Police encouraged witnesses to come forward.

Grainger said anyone with video footage of the incident should contact Christchurch police by calling 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Wonderful! I wonder if our Police have ever considered that shooting the turds would save all of us poor old taxpayers a hell of a lot of cash. Then again it’s obvious that the same simple solution has never occured to our government! 🙂

    Housing is a finite amount. We are short of stock but we also have demand from buyers and renters so I doubt many would want to give their rentals away.
    I can see the housing market still rising in many areas but rents will definitely rise until the market is saturated.

The national kapa haka festival is coming to Eden Park

Eden Park has seen many a stirring haka in its 119-year history. But it will soon experience a whole other level of tikanga Māori; as it is set to host the next Te Matatini national kapa haka festival in 2021.

Surely Helen (no music concerts at Eden Park) Clark would be concerned about bare-bottomed men shouting at the top of their lungs, while the girls wave poi-pois about to show their appreciation? 🙂

I’m all for people getting off their backside and doing something useful. But what’s the difference between Maori and non-Maori farming practices, if any; and do Maori farmers pay tax, or are they tax-exempt if they operate under an iwi/hapu framework?

  You’ve got me beat. Mind you I’ve known a few farmers who were Maori & they weren’t much better or worse than your average Pakeha.
  
  There are only two differences that I can think of. One was that 40-50yrs ago they got loans at preferential interest rates. Then again if they’re farming Maori land they’re answerable to people who know jackshit about the racket. Then as they’re seen as successful they’re a magnet to all their bludging rellies. But again a lot of NZ is privately owned by individual Maori & to the best of my knowledge they’re treated the same way as all of us
