  I wonder if Twyford seriously believes this… when exactly did the market get broken and what exactly is wrong with it? He seemed to say the correct things in opposition that it was about land supply but when in power decides its because houses aren’t being build fast enough and then utterly fails with the full resources of the Government to build houses any faster… You couldn’t get any stupider (well, Ardern’s government is still in power so we might yet see it).

      I thought he was satirising TVNZ ‘s recent attempt to create a moral panic over summer , a season which weirdly occurs around the same time every year and usually involves a week or two of sunny hot weather , as being man made global warming .

Polar vortex: Whatever happened to global warming

So whatever happened to global warming?

That’s certainly what President Donald Trump wanted to know when he tweeted this a couple of days ago:

” “In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!”

There is no question the Midwest is cold – very cold.

Just check the advice from the US National Weather Service. It has warned that the current low temperatures could easily “freeze the flesh off your bones”.

Don’t leave home if you can avoid it, the NWS in Iowa urged, and if you do have to go out, “avoid taking deep breaths; minimise talking”.

Meanwhile the internet is heaving under images of snow and ice.

My favourites include the icy steam pouring off lake Lake Michigan and the thousands of people who have been doing the “hot water challenge”.

Is the president right?

So, is this brutal cold snap evidence that global warming is faltering?

Sadly, the answer is no, as one of the president’s own agencies quickly pointed out in an apparent response to his tweet.

“Winter storms don’t prove that global warming isn’t happening” tweeted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The NOAA included a link to an article which suggests that severe snowstorms may even become more likely as the world warms.

You have probably already heard that the current brutal weather is thanks to something called the “polar vortex”….”

Until then, snowstorms remain quite possible, and natural climate patterns and random variability will still lead to winters that are unusually cold and snowy in different locations.”
    
    One way to demonstrate that record snowstorms aren’t incompatible with a warmer climate is to look back at the historical record snowstorms and the seasonal conditions that spawned them. An analysis of such storms between 1961-2010 showed that while most extreme snow storms did occur in seasons that were colder and wetter than average, about 35 percent of snow seasons that produced extreme snow events were warmer than average, and 30 percent were drier than average.
    
    Summarizing that analysis as part of a “state of the science” review of climate change and extreme storms in 2014, a group of scientists concluded:
    
    even if temperatures continue to warm as they have over the past several decades for the next few decades at least, then such record storms are possible, as they have been observed during otherwise warmer- and drier-than average seasons.
    
    Not only are severe snowstorms possible in a warming climate, they may even be more likely. According to the Third National Climate Assessment, there is some evidence that cold season storms in the Northern Hemisphere have become both more frequent and more intense since 1950. Extremely heavy snowstorms also increased in number during the last century in northern and eastern parts of the United States, although they have been less frequent since 2000.

    Fortunately solar physicists are getting their message out. Reliable data shows strong causative correlations between solar cycles and polar vortexes. Ipcc can at best show some correlation between Co2 and temp. The lie that Co2 causes warming has been debunked by good phycists who argue that Co2 always follows the temp trend. She claimed that Murray Mc Cully had hosted the finalists of Miss New Zealand in his office. She also said he asked the House to stand and give them a round of applause.Of course all fake news except par for the course for that waste of space Newspaper and its writer from Australia Alison Mau .
Notice in todays Dominion Post there is an apology and a retraction saying they regret the so called “error”I bet they do especially when Murray Mc Cullys’ Lawyers coming a calling. Good one for Murray and Parliament, maybe not so good for their well known fake news writer Alison Mau. What a shame.

My prices will be shooting up every year due to labour and compliance costs and that makes me very nervous as we compete against imported proteins

  What they don’t realise is that NZ still needs to be competitive when it comes to exports and tourists.
  
  We will just price ourselves off the market and our dollar will have to fall to compensate so then all of our prices will be higher.

    That has been the mantra of Argentinian politicians since the 1960s. It has not turned out well. Even Australia adopted this approach from the 1950s through to 1983. Tightly controlled national awards. It resulted in a succession of price wage spirals that entrenched low growth and high inflation right through to the late 80s.
    
    It is unthinkable that New Zealand is considering reviving such awful policies.

  I have noticed in Wellington that the long standing price of a coffee at $4 is now broken with the new standard at $4.50. There is also a push in some cafes to get punters buying large coffees at $5. The margin on large coffees is higher. Just like McDonald’s wants punters to up size their fries ?.
  
  The price of coffee beans is not material in central city coffee bars. It is rent and wages. As minimum wages climb to $20, expect $5 to be the new standard for a coffee. If the economy softens, cutting back on 5 dollar coffees is first order belt tightening. If that happens, the great Wellington coffee bar bubble could pop.

    I bought a coffee this morning for about $4.30, hand made by a trained barista.
    People pay that sort of money then drink it sitting in the car or at home or wherever . . .
    The last time I bought a beer at a restaurant it was an eye watering ten dollars plus.
    Twice as much for something that can be picked up at the supermarket for a couple of bucks and likewise drunk at home or sitting in the car or walking down the street judging by the empty bottles I see lying around.
    We bought a bottle of water at a food court the other day for $3.50. Same size at the supermarket 0.42c if you buy 24
    I’m not convinced that the price of the coffee is the reason why the business sinks or swims.
    The place I went this morning is just a hole in the wall outfit with no frills, no food apart from a few muffins, paper cups only, a couple of tables and top notch coffee. It’s like Grand Central Station on a Saturday.

  He just needs to keep it up: sensible policies, no crazy ideas, support middle NZ and a sound economy, but not based on anything the left could call an ‘immigration Ponzi scheme’.
  
  The main thing National got wrong was allowing too much immigration (yes, I know, a lot were Kiwis returning because NZ was doing so well). If they can come up with a sensible immigration policy, they will win.
  
  About Taxinda’s first year student bribe: they were going to vote Green or Labour anyway. National should cut it completely, but have a few good scholarships for people completing medical degrees and other necessary courses.

Of course they will thank their benefactor Peters that without his help ,it would have been impossible to gouge hard working NZs of their entitlements.What a bloody disgrace.

What do we make in NZ?
Pricing a new kitchen and bathroom fit out I was astounded to discover that all the items were made in China. That included whiteware and the timber for the benchtop.
Are we exporting wood fibre to have it returned as flat pack carcasses?

Apart from agriculture and horticulture what do we produce in NZ? Have we gone too global? We open our doors to massive population inflows–what is left for the rest to work at? We have to export to fund the demand for imports.
Are our employment/labour statistics hiding a possible serious underemployment? The latter taken up by time spent on phones.

Canterbury seeing Red ….

A Chinese water bottler who got access to Canterbury’s artesian resource by buying the allocation of a wool scourer is out to double the amount of water it takes around Christchurch. (The wool scouring has ended.)

This is a hot issue in the south (as it is among Maori), and no doubt there will be attempts to nail it on National.

The link could be National replacing the elected local environmental council with State appointees. The council gave the Chinese the green light to take the water for shipment to China.

  Plenty of protests and emotion when it comes to that specific use of water.
  
  But we have no problem extracting even more water for dairy in traditionally non dairy areas and that is a massive use of water , I heard it takes 90 litres of water to produce 1 litre of milk .

    Christchurch has water problems, Kowtow, and so does Canterbury, with the move from crop farming to irrigated dairy farming.
    
    The rivers are drying up, and well water quality is diving.
    
    The issue is more about exporting water that is no longer plentiful. It doesn’t help that the water is going to Communist China, which is buying up resources in many parts of the world – land, minerals, water.
    
    Shipping bottled water matches New Zealand’s backward move into commodities exports: logs instead of timber, and in dairying, where has the progress been to creating a New Zealand version of Nestle?
    
    I’m no lawyer, but it seems significant to me from an economic view, that the working wool scour’s consent seems to have been to take the water for “industrial” use. I’m not sure how the Chinese bottler’s consent is classified.
    
    From a political viewpoint, the (National) Government’s replacement of elected councillors with a State-appointed commissioner still rankles with many in Canterbury. My understanding is that agricultural water issues and demands were the background to this.

      They have most likely just applied to increase the volume of the take.
      There is likely to be ample water available and no adverse effects on the environment so the RC most likely will grant increase.
      Whether or not it should be exported is more a moral issue.
      Water should be treated like oil and a royalty added.The RC could then pass on any royalty to the Crown.
      Of course there are complications because as soon as water is mentioned the special people prick up their ears and think koha.
      That is why a government with guts should say water belongs to us all full stop.
      Then introduce legislation that adds a royalty to exported water.

      DigNap15, I’m not sure there is a surfeit of accessible water. Certainly there no longer is in Canterbury, where agricultural irrigation is likely to increase.
      
      Even in Southland there have been shortages of water shortages (see link below).
      
      Poster Inandout says build dams. Yep, but that takes investment, then the water is no longer cheap. However, your idea, DigNap, of a royalty on exports, would contribute to investment for harnessing water.
      
      For Christchurch itself, I vaguely recall that an engineer suggested a tunnel through the alps to the West Coast, but could that be economically feasible?
      
      A lot of water falls on NZ in a year, but it doesn’t fall into ponds or into accessible aquifers waiting for bottlers to tap it.

This is what kills dams of the size Muldoon brought in, and argue as much as you like but dams are bloody effective at holding water and creating power. They gave access to basically free water, will hire a dozen minimum wage workers and all the profits will go off shore. We won’t even get any tax as they’ll on sell to a Chinese company at near cost and tax will only be due in China

There were some Maori with bemused faces and a journalist questioning Cindy if it was a good idea to duplicate the work already been done on the issue by the Chair of Iwi at the cost of $4m.         The sea at high tide washes right over the top too.

      Some islands are fast sinking due to tectonic plate movements.
      Some , like Funafuti were fucked by the Yanks turning it into an airfield so they could incinerate 100’s of thousands of Tokyoians .

I had the misfortune to catch a bit of The Panel on Nat Radio yesterday. They had this person called Lizzie Marvelly on. Who is she, BTW and why should we be interested in anything she says. Anyway this remarkably stupid girl was talking about “period poverty” Sheesh, what will they come up with next? Anyway she claims some girls can’t go to school because they are too poor to buy tampons. For god’s sake use washable cloths the way they always used to. Tampons are a very recent invention. All these girls need is a bit of education, not a handout. What absolutely blew me away, though, was that this Marvelly person said “Any girl or woman, or any person having a period, should be able to afford tampons” or words to that affect. This moronic person seems to think that people other than females can have periods. Honestly, why do we have to put up with this crap being spouted at us. I turned the radio off, pronto.

And Trump and his wife, Ivana—she was very pregnant at this point. She came up. Oh, it was a gala evening, all the designers. I got to meet all the designers. But, here comes Trump. And now I’m remembering that whole situation, and that’s what’s flashing through my mind, but I’m not saying anything. And I hand him his table assignment, and he looks at me, and he says, “I remember you. You were that woman from the airplane.” And then he called me a very obscene name.

  The women in the case you highlight seems to be a bit mentally deranged so her loud obnoxious behaviour does not really surprise me.
  However I do have a lot of sympathy for her complaint about these fat slobs as I personally have had the misfortune of being seated next to large smelly blobs on planes and it is a very unpleasant experience.
  Whales should be made to purchase a second seat if they cannot fit in their own one or upgrade to business where the seats are bigger as stealing half of someone else’s is bullshit.
  If they can’t afford the above options then walk as the exercise might do them good.

  That does seem to be a thing now. The US is so full of lardarses that it’s now considered rude to point out how difficult it is to spend hours on a plane squashed between two people whose grotesque fat rolls extend into your space.

      Just to reiterate – saying something Morrissey doesn’t like isn’t a “rant.” And that video shows her having a whinge to a friend on her phone for the first minute or so, then shutting up until the morbidly obese woman videoing her asked the cabin crew to move her and called her a bitch. If she then had a few choice phrases for the passengers who told her she a moral obligation to spend the flight being compressed between other people’s fat rolls, that’s hardly surprising.

Last week I heard a women from Family Planning talking about accidental babies and contraception options

She said the long term contraception options that last many years are the best option for many girls and women but unaffordable at $300 each.

This just seems crazy. We spend billions on benefits, prisons and other long term social costs of solo parents and kids people can’t afford but the Govt won’t fund $300

Surely this is an absolute no brainer investment?

        I shared a flat with a mate on Talavera Terrace, right by the Uni’s Cable Car stop, that was ideal for bringing a blonde (I never demanded the ‘Scandinavian’ bit!) back for a quick lunchtime bite, a just-as-quick (CENSORED!) and a quick shower (eating food can make you QUITE in need of a shower)…
        
        Having a Super Bowl party here from Monday lunchtime Monday, Longknives. I have gone and bought a couple of dozen Buds to set the tone even though I swear I have peed better quality stuff! Once those are done, it’ll be Heineken all the way.
        And my world-famous Guacamole-free Guacamole Dip will feature. Je detests food that you ain’t sure, looking at it, whether or not your digestive system has ‘dealt’ with it or not..

Not just “Kiwi Build” but “New Zealand Build” (ie the state of her own house in the NZ country) is a shambles and she’s making things worse (except for the oil field ban) – swanning off to Europe isnt going to fix things at home.

I think the trip was all stardust to be frank. As I understand the agreements signed did not have firm commitments to export numbers etc. If all the agreements were just MoUs then they are not worth much.

The most interesting takeaway from this article is the way it highlights the pains the PM must be feeling having left the billionaire meet and greet that is Davos.

When the PM and her Housing Minister talked about recalibrating Kiwibuild it was it was obvious that it had not been calibrated in the first place. It is impossible to recalibrate something that has never been calibrated. They obviously don’t have a clue what they are talking about.

Anyone seen in Stuff, the Herald or elsewhere locally an obituary for a brave NZ sailor – Commander Bill Smith, who died recently aged 96? There’s an obituary for him behind the paywall at the Telegraph.

Gore-born Smith, known in the Royal Navy as Kiwi Smith, was at the controls in a midget submarine that laid explosives under a Japanese cruiser in Singapore then was trapped by the tide under the cruiser’s hull as the countdown to the blast began. Fortunately Smith was able to edge the little sub out from under the Japanese ship before the explosion.

When the midget sub got back to the host British submarine outside the harbour, the crew of four had been on duty, mostly awake on benzedrine, for about 52 hours.

Smith and the other officer in the midget submarine agreed to return to Singapore Harbour for an attack on a second Japanese cruiser, but the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended this plan.

Two the midget sub’s crew were awarded Victoria Crosses – the pair who went out through hatches to place the explosive. Of the other two, Smith was awarded a DSO and the sailor who had been at the motors was awarded a Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.

In 1946, Smith was back in New Zealand and was an officer on the cruiser HMNZS Bellona when 100 of the crew mutinied in Sydney after a new pay scale was announced.

Later Smith helped set up Scott Base in Antarctica, and then became the RNZN’s hydrographer.

        There weren’t many who would have qualified as “paragons of virtue” but all who served are entitled to the respect that fighting for your country merits. In any case, from what little I’ve read, the mutinies resulted from a tight arsed government refusing reasonable pay for naval personal knowing full well that they had signed up for long terms they were not allowed to break.
        
        Slavery involved similar conditions.

        If it had occurred during wartime then I’d go along with that. Yet most were sentenced to 60 days in a military prison commuted to 14 days, then demoted, stripped of pay & refused Government employ afterwards.

        I don’t think any of them were imprisoned at all. They were discharged as ‘services no longer required’ and toddled off the the higher paying civilians jobs they wanted.
        Fifty years later some of them wanted an apology and ‘compensation’.

      The mutiny was hardly surprising, especially when those involved were fully aware that trade unionists were being paid double and triple pay for helping load munitions onto ships.
      
      One of those trade unionists went on to become PM, and had his term (and life) cut short by the stress caused by an extramarital affair with a member of his staff.

You’ll recall how you used to give our recently departed co-respondent “Flipper” a hard time about his observations concerning Muldoon.

After DPF’s post concerning his demise I kept a watchful eye on the death notices in the local paper. It transpires that he was a journalist in the parliamentary press gallery during the Muldoon era.

Although a little disjointed & certainly a flawed character his recall of events may have had a true & historic base.

No names as per our host’s policies but a little research will point you in the right direction.

There’s been some discussion on Kiwiblog recently about China.

Detained Australian citizen and writer Yang Hengjun’s lawyers blocked from meeting him ‘at his request’

Two lawyers appointed by the wife of an Australian citizen detained in China have been denied access to him, with Chinese authorities claiming it is at the detainee’s request. Yang Hengjun, 53, is being held in an undisclosed location in Beijing under investigation for ‘endangering state security’, on charges that may involve espionage. … Yang Hengjun, whose legal name is Yang Jun, is a former Chinese Foreign Ministry employee who later migrated to Australia and became a prominent online writer.

That’s an interesting twist – a former Chinese foreign ministry employee.

There seems to be a recent trend where China detains people (to use a neutral description). Last year an Australian mining company executive was released from a Chinese jail:

Mr Hu was Rio Tinto’s top iron ore negotiator in China during the mining boom, and was instrumental in locking in record prices for shipments to Chinese state steel mills. But he was arrested in mid 2009, along with three other China-based staff, and convicted in a closed, three-day trial the following year.

The company concerned, Rio Tinto, fired him (he wasn’t available to work from a prison cell), but an internal investigation supposedly didn’t find anything untoward.

And, also recently, a Chinese court sentenced a Canadian man to death amid a diplomatic dispute with Canada.

There seems to be a developing trend of a murky interplay between international politics, diplomatic disputes and people being locked up in China. I’d be very cautious if I were ever to find myself working for a significant company that dabbles in China and required me to travel there for business.
