    You think they accept settlements? Then what about the continual “top up payments” despite “full and final settlement”, tax free status and handouts like the recent $100m for “land development”. At what point have restitutions been made? And which members of the Iwi actually see any of this?
    
    This gravy train is in it’s 3rd decade and about to enter its 4th with no end in sight and what do we see every 6th February? More whinging, more insults and more disrespect.
    
    So like many, I’ll take today off and wait for the 25th April to reflect on what it actually means to be a New Zealander.

      A fair question. My view is that restitution will have occurred when Maori and Pakeha achieve equal treatment. That is, when Maori are imprisoned, educated, paid, and medicated in the same way as Pakeha. Until that happens, the effects of the thefts and oppression will continue to resonate down the generations.
      
      For example, did you know that in NZ hospitals, Maori babies are less likely to be revived that European babies?

And that according to a friend who is a specialist obstetrician but here’s one; Did you know pregnant Maori women with serious health issues are less likely to turn up to (free) appointments with their specialist who is vested in ensuring the health of the mother and unborn baby?         So it’s not racism, it’s the fact that Maori etc have higher numbers of premature births in the range that the DHB will not automatically resuscitate. ie if it was a white baby it wouldn’t get resuscitated either.
        
        Now you could argue that the DHBs should but that’s not your claim, they are applying the same policy to all ethnicities and not being racist.
        
        BTW, it seems Indians and Pacifica are being treated worse than Maori if one follows your logic.

        So 58% of those sentenced to imprisonment are Maori. The last reported census data shows that Maori income was 80% of the national median income (2013), and that this was a decline from 86% (2006). Also Maori live six years less than non-Maori, but that one at least is improving.
        
        These data do not indicate equal treatment, unfortunately.

        But for those arguing against, and abusing Maori … You won’t accept the evidence of historians and commissions. You won’t accept direct statistics. You only seem to accept your own anecdotes and opinions. It’s pretty hard to have a constructive discussion under those circumstances. Honestly, it wouldn’t hurt you to take a step back and have a think about how we can make NZ a better place.
        
        A good way to start is to treat Maori as humans deserving of respect and equal consideration instead of abuse. Or, if you prefer, take an approach of Christian charity and compassion. If you can’t do that, then you shouldn’t need me to tell you the problem doesn’t lie with Maori.

        Jack5 – yes [edit: economics] is definitely a huge part of the equation, and in particular jobs for Maori youth.
        
        My view (which I don’t necessarily expect you to agree with) is that economic participation also needs a whole lot of enablers, like education, health, and self respect. I think self respect is tied up with personal and cultural pride.

        I’ve also suggested that you look again at the incarceration figure that you’ve deliberately misinterpreted by not looking at context.
        
        If you’d like to discuss the statistics I’m more than happy to but so far all you’ve done is attack me for pointing out your misuse of them.
        
        At no stage have I shown a lack of respect for Maori, I do have a lack of respect for your wilful disregarding of evidence, context and cherry-picking of data.

        I don’t agree with you WaveyDavey. The statistics in the article are percentages, so that controls for difference in incidence. Also, the fact that more Maori are presented before the courts doesn’t alter the core argument that they are incarcerated at a higher rate. I think your argument is that it is just that those who do the crime should be punished. But actually there is evidence of systematic discrimination from arrest to court appearance to sentence. So I don’t think that undermines my point. Also, poverty and alienation doubtless feed the commission of crime. And in my view Maori poverty and alienation are a direct consequence of injustice. Of course I don’t expect you to necessarily agree, but please be assured I am trying to argue honestly.

      In 194, the “full and final settlement” had Sir Apirana Ngata stand in Parliament to thank the then government and praise its generosity.
      
      It only took a facile Labour idiot named Palmer in 1985 to overturn the substance of that 1948 settlement by inventing such a term as “treaty principles,” thereby opening a Pandora’s Box that now, can never be closed.
      
      Look at all the one-way racist bullshit we’re fed every single day – while exclusively Maori items – definable as racist – like sports teams and such are permitted without any sort of question. Imagine the uproar if an exclusively non-Maori team or set-up was even remotely attempted.

    With thinking like that, you should do some actual reading instead of displaying your gross ignorance.
    We (and certainly not me!) did not steal their land, most was sold with willing buyer and willing seller. Much of the rest was confiscated as punishment for crimes. Most Maori tribes were with the government and did not suffer confiscation. Some small portion of the land was taken for other reasons, and that portion should be the sole focus of treaty claims. (Which should be seen in a regular court with the same legal evidence requirements as all cases).

      Significant land was taken illegally and claims to the tribunal have to be proven. Yes some questionable claims probably get through, but if concentrate on the exception, not rule we end up making all sorts of misinformed opinions.         I’m more than a little familiar with our history. Quantify ‘significant’ and explain “illegally taken”, because significant means different things to different people, and “illegally taken” means that the actions were outside the law. As a percentage of total lands acquired by the crown from Maori, confiscated lands were not huge, and nor were they illegal. Did you know that the Waitangi Tribunal doesn’t need to have the same requirements of the level of evidence in the submissions? It has lead to a lot of absolute rubbish claims being allowed, and apologies that should not have been given (in my opinion) by the crown.
        I can’t remember the claim, but the one where Michael Bassett gave a discenting opinion, was where no blame was attributed to actions by the Maori tribe in question, nor the consequences, except in Michael Bassett’s opinion. Reading both views, only Michael’s had any balance and he hasn’t sat on any more tribunals since to the best of my knowledge.

      And if we are willing to benefit from their actions we should be willing to right their crimes.
      
      Also, from what I can tell, in the 19th Century the government overrode the court process to enforce disputed title and disputed settlement by force. So Maori did not get the benefits of rule of law. For example: the Hutt Valley campaign in 1846. Or what about Waitara – the governor went to war because he said Kingi didn’t own the land. And then after the war the land was confiscated! How does that work? If they owned the land, they shouldn’t have been attacked.

      Was is not that Maori have a class system and the upper class retained their land (still do) and the lower class never had any in the first place. I don’t think anything has changed. A lovely Maori elder, who owned a large tract of land up in Waitangi, once said to me “…. there’s Maoris and there’s Maoris” that really sums it up for me.

      lastman, the Left believe in groups, not individuals. For them there is no bowing out of responsibility on a personal level when the group is deemed responsible. Like you, I know my ancestors, original settlers on both sides, were not stealing land or making life difficult for Maori. Recent Labour govt’s have made the decision that we, as individual taxpayers will contribute, and keep contributing to the gravy train that is the TOW settlements.       Sam, if Ultima describes Waitangi Day as a “racist day” that’s insufficient to prove Ultima’s himself/herself a racist.
      
      “Racism” is a word so recent that it doesn’t appear in my 1973 edition of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, but I’ll accept the definition of the online Merriam Webster:
      
      1. Belief that certain races of people are by birth and nature superior to others; and
      
      2 : Discrimination or hatred based on race.
      
      Ultima can oppose the celebration of Waitangi Day without holding the first belief, and criticising Waitangi Day by declaring it to be itself racist doesn’t meet the second condition.
      
      The concept of “race” is flimsy, and it’s notable that the word “racism” doesn’t seem to have existed when black Africans were being captured and sold in Africa and transported to North and South America as slaves (or southern Slav children were being captured and sold in the Ottoman empire at the same time, and later).
      
      If the word is so recent, it can’t have been used by Lincoln and the Unionists in America’s Civil War in which slavery was the central issue (though many American Southerners deny that).
      
      A useful step in lifting Maori people to economic equality with non-Maori New Zealanders would be to scrap peppering ethnic discussion with the emotional word “racism”.

      If racism is something ethnic Europeans do to other races, and reverse racism is when the prejudice flows in the opposite direction, what words do we use to describe:
      
      Chinese/Japanese
      Indian/Chinese
      Maori/Pacifica
      Tonga/Samoa
      Arab/Black African
      Black African/Indian

One of the few benefits of being a bit older is you get increasingly better at analyzing your own species’ behaviour and character.

However even very young Maori are quite adept at spotting the bandits and phonies too. Don’t ask me why, maybe they get in-house practice from infancy.

Jacinda Ardern is a titanic bullshitter. One of the best I’ve seen. But today I think she walks into the Maori world totally ignorant of how they think and how they are.

Perhaps she thinks her carefully crafted Obama-style speeches, so expressive, so respectful, delivered passionately with tiny fist clenched, emphasizing all the verbs (as per the Waikato Comms degree) will persuade and delight the assembled rank and file at Waitangi.

They won’t. Especially after the prog media dropped Article #1 on her

That was real nasty. She’ll be furious, but the media goblins are survivors. They saw peak pixie dust before Joe Average did and are now quietly shifting position. They know the Sroubek saga is about to be exposed and want to be on the right side of history.

Jacinda reminds me of Icarus. I don’t know if it’ll be Bridges or Hosking or Hone but when her edifice collapses, it is going to be spectacular. I’ve encountered many a Cindy over the years and it always ends the same. Tears, tantrums, storming out, attempted revenge then a disappearing act.

    Notice they are subjects, not partners or any other such revisionist nonsense. There is no partnership. The Crown cannot make a partnership with its subjects.
    So we became a nation at waitangi. One nation, not two. With equal rights and one law for all. Which is all anyone can reasonably expect.

    Maiki Sherman – Māori journalist of the year and a native Te Reo speaker.
    Cindy wooed the Māori hierarchy and made promise after promise. They won every Māori seat and obliterated the Māori party. Most politicians wooing a specific group of voters would have done some basic background on that group prior. But she’s too bloody lazy.

– Sage didn’t really blame the Overseas Investment Act for signing away rights to water, that was just a misunderstanding which was cleared up as soon as she read her copy of the act –

– And did she really mean to refer to hunters opposing her tahr cull as “cunters?” S’pose she must have, there was never an apology –

– Sage couldn’t blame John Key for the sale of Mount White station to a Czech National – It was her signature on the OIO documents –

– Acting PM WeeWinnie didn’t really select a NZ First Minister to be responsible for the inquiry into former NZ First candidate Wally Haumaha’s selection as deputy police commissioner, and then appoint one of Haumaha’s “bro’s” to head that inquiry – they just drew the names from the hat in the wrong order –

– Tracey Martin didn’t really claim that Kingi had vouched for Haumana 16 years ago on LinkedIn, 10 years before that LinkedIn function had even been invented – the “teen” was just a slip of the tongue – again –

– Clare Curran didn’t arrange a meeting with Carol Hirschfeld, that was just another unfortunate misunderstanding –

– Neither did she warn anybody away from attending a Parliamentary Select Committee – that was just an unfortunate misinterpretation –

– nor was she involved in a committee that she established not keeping minutes because they could be OIA’d – another misconstruction of the facts

– nor did she secretly hire Derek Handley as chief technology officer, and force the Government into paying out $107,000 to him whilst they did a re-think –

– and of course she didn’t really use her gmail account to keep information out of the public domain, she was always intending to make that public as soon as Melissa Lee found out about it –

– WeeWinnie didn’t attempt to sue Bill English & Co – the media misinterpreted that as well –

– Cindy didn’t mean to say “A true mark of leadership is whether you front those mistakes“:- the camera was inadvertently rolling at the time –

– Cindy’s candidate for Northcote didn’t really claim to have earned an MBA, it’s just that his social media page forgot to mention that MBA actually stood for “Mega Bullshit Artist” –

– Cindy wasn’t solely responsible for burning 80,000kg of jet fuel so that she could get home in time to give the baybeee an evening meal, that plane just happened to be passing Nauru anyway – that baybeee was responsible for more greenhouse emissions before her first birthday than the average NZ family generates in their lifetime –

– Cindy’s lawnmower man/diary secretary Clicker Gay-ford didn’t really defend her cancelling appearances on two weekend current affairs programmes, he just knew better what he had forgotten to put in mummy’s diary –

– and for any acceptable reason for Richie Hardcore having to make contact with her on her private cell phone number, well he could only have accidentally stumbled over that number somewhere –

– and Cindy didn’t mean to be deliberately misleading by not mentioning she had already received Clare Curran’s resignation, she just hadn’t had sufficient time to get the spin doctors onto that story before going public –

– not to mention the PR company that she hired at (no doubt) enormous expense to catch baybeee photos whilst mummy and daddy were visiting the UN, I suppose there just wasn’t sufficient NZ media there to adequately capture her every move –

– David Clark didn’t try to bribe a DHB Chairman, he was just being nice offering him alternate employment – and quickly if he kept his mouth shut –

– David Clark also didn’t really go on an overseas holiday the day before the nurses strike began, he just had to attend to a “secret mission” that coincidentally included the wife and kids –

– Ron Mark didn’t misuse military aircraft, they just happened to be misguidedly passing his back porch –

– Tracey Martin didn’t deliberately avoid a meeting she had called with the 15 Oranga Tamariki CRF chairs, she had a “senior moment” that morning and forgot which hat she needed to put on –

– The government didn’t really try to short circuit the law for one of David Parker’s workmates, it was supposed to be koha for the local iwi –

– Angry Andy didn’t miscalculate the spending on his Criminal Justice Summit, it just happened that nobody told him that the “decadent gluten free chocolate brownie, pork apricot & thyme pastries and luxury pies were going to add $750,000 to the bill –

– and as for the $20,000+ temporary registration desk, can only wish Andy had phoned me for that, sure I could have managed to supply that complete with bikini clad clerks for half the price –

– Labour didn’t supply booze to underage children, their caterer just made an unfortunate miscalculation –

– Mega Fightery didn’t really lay hands on one of her staff, she was just gesticulating wildly in her office when somebody’s face got in the way – again –

– JAG didn’t mean to be nasty about old white men – we just got all confused about her terminology – after all there’s probably an “old white man” at the helm of her daily flight to work, isn’t there ?

– And she didn’t really mean to award contracts to her husband without tender or scrutiny, you must realise that she was suffering baby brain at the time –

– Perhaps she was also suffering baby brain when she mooted the red meat tax – she didn’t mean to say that the government was considering this, or did she inadvertently pre-empt something?

– We didn’t really cancel oil and gas exploration – it’s just that we have found an ample supply of hot air in Wellington to compensate –

– Shame Jones was told his project feasibility study was a waste of money, but he unfortunately misread that and carried on regardless –

– Jenny Marcroft didn’t attempt to bribe Mark Mitchell, Mitchell became confused and misunderstood what she said –

– Cindy didn’t promise “no strikes on my watch” – that was just misreporting by TVNZ and should have been edited out –

– Similarly – she didn’t mean to say “no new taxes under Labour – but then the fuel taxes are mostly being applied by Councils anyway –

– And she didn’t really mean to promise 1,000 homes for maori – just forgot to mention that this wouldn’t be considered until after the KiwiFail target was reached –

– Nobody put their hand down a kiddies pants at the Labour Youth Camp, somebody was just brushing the ants off their tush – another unfortunate misunderstanding –

– Twitford didn’t promise us 100,000 extra affordable new family homes – then have to re-define the term “year” – just another unfortunate miscalculation –

– Look out for Twitford re-defining the term “family home” in coming months, as much of the KiwiFail product seems to be bedsits and 1br apartments – and yes there’s more, a parking space will only cost you an extra $50,000 –

– and now that we have seen a “recalibration” of the KiwiFail targets, it chuffs me to think that, with inflation, the price of an “affordable” KiwiFail home will exceed one million dollars before the government gets half way through their programme – now that’s an “affordable” cock-up extraordinaire –

– Likewise, Twitford was just suffering brain fade when he telephoned his staff from an aircraft, then stood and moved around the aircraft whilst it was taxi-ing – the witness just misunderstood what he saw –

– Shame Jones didn’t really promise 100,000,000 trees per year, this was an unfortunate misassessment, and in any case he couldn’t control the autumn from hell –

– Paul Eagle didn’t attempt to bribe his local panel beater into committing insurance fraud – the poor panel beater unfortunately suffers from mistaken belief syndrome –

– and just when you think it can’t possibly get any worse, we introduce to you a Minister of Immigration who grants residency to a criminal illegal immigrant, currently in jail for drug smuggling –

This agglomeration of misfits, misunderstandings, false impressions, misreadings, miscalculations, mistaken beliefs, slips of the tongue, recalibrations, misinterpretations, fuck ups, errors and mix-ups is beginning to get somewhat tedious. The time has come for one or two heads to roll.

So much aid for Maori, that it probably overlaps itself –

Back on November 30 last year –
A new $118 million grant scheme to help landowners plant trees has been announced by the government this morning.
Another $120m is being committed to research initiatives that help reduce the barriers to tree planting. [1]

So $120 million will be spent on finding out how to properly plant trees, $2m more than will be spent in actually planting them – $238 million in all

But yesterday morning –
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a new regional skills and employment initiative called Te Ara Mahi (Pathways to Work), to support workers and employers in the regions.
Up to $82.4 million from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) will go into the programme. [2]

Shouldn’t the Winston / Ardern Government also announce yet another working committee to establish how much the research initiatives that help reduce the barriers to tree planting, [1] above, will overlap research in the skills and employment initiative in the regions [2]?

Likewise – Forestry Minister Shane Jones said applicants for the grants could be looking to plant for reduced erosion, improved water quality, the development of Māori-owned land or to diversify productive land uses. [1]
– so, how much will the development of Māori-owned land, mentioned under Forestry above, overlap the $100 announced February 3 to support Māori landowners to make better use of their land? [3]

And all this is a few days before Ardern stands at Waitangi to be told if she has delivered or not – whether “her daughter should be proud”.
Pork barrel spending that is so obvious it would be utterly hilarious in a programme like YES MINISTER (“But Minister do you think anyone will notice it overlaps?”) but in reality is insulting to Maori, and also insulting and racially offensive to everyone else.

And does the pork barrel largesse compensate for the lost of Maori’s education taonga: partnership schools – taonga are in the Second Article, Jacinda – and even perhaps a greater loss to consider: the demise of any influence or function of the seven Special Maori seats in opposing the destruction of the flagship schools.
The Maori seats are fucked, even without Winston’s referendum to get rid of them.
Did anyone notice? No – and that perhaps proves the point.

On the contrary, Don Brash could do quite of lot himself to cure his ignorance. That he wilfully refuses to do so perhaps does qualify him a a ‘whack-job’.
    That how it seems to me anyway. Unless you agree that Brash’s nuttiness is related to deterioration of his mental faculties, in which case you have a fair point.

      So their intentions were good I think.

      Not officially. The Mormon’s removed polygamy from their official belief set must be over 100 years ago.
      
      Possibly it originated with their founder, Smith, and his proclivities. Apparently early Mormon conversions were about 4:1 female to male, so there was a marked shortage of husbands for traditional monogamous relationships.
      
      I believe that one major driver for the change was that Utah was being denied statehood inside the US because of their “unchristian” policy of legal polygamy. Also by that time the sex imbalance had more or less evened out.
      
      Some renegade “Mormon” congregations support polygamy, but they are not part of the official church.

On the wireless this morning the maths-challenged Mr Twyford said that the state house waiting lists had rocketed up in part because people finally realised they had a chance to get a cheap as chips house and leave their “appalling conditions”.

The item mentioned that state house waiting list was up 63% in the first year of the current government. That is a whole lot of unexpected epiphanies happening.

The radio item said the waiting list stands at just over 9500, but omitted to say that was at 30 September and it is being reported that it is over 11600 at 31 December. Official December numbers not yet published.

On average each state house costs the taxpayer nearly $300 per week in subsidised rent. Not counting the capital cost of the 6400 planned over the next 3 years. I hope Mr Twyford is doing the maths because some of us are, and are watching.

It’s a lot of (taxpayer) money.

Unless a lot of tenants vacate their state houses, those on the waiting list will be, well, waiting.

    The problem with that is a major mismatch between supply and demand. Traditionally state houses have been geared to families. Now over half of those on the state house waiting list are eligible for a 1 bedroom home, and nearly all are single people. Most are not pensioners. The others waiting for a 1 bedroom are adult couples, no children.
    
    We could ask why there is such high demand from singles, and part of the answer will relate to meds. And that raises the further issue that housing single people in studios or 1 bedroom places pepper potted among Kiwibuild or private owners / renters is potentially a problem. Only need a couple off their meds or not managing addiction issues, for example, in a high density complex…..

      Umm Not all. There are lots of elderly who live on their own and who can never afford to go into a retirement village. (who is surprised ?).
      There is a real demand for one and two bedroom units an no one has been building them for a lot of years. Hence the problem.
      These people are not necessarily in a state house either.
      
      One and two beddies around me sell within a week or so.

These were a focus of the previous government helping them into home ownership or private rentals, help including financial. Several hundred moved.

Happy Waitangi Day, the beginning of modern New Zealand when sovereignty was ceded to the Crown, Maori were guaranteed their property rights so long as they wished to retain them, and when equal civil and political rights were established for all New Zealanders as British subjects. (Please bear with me, just a short primer for Jacinda and James to start the day in case they get more questions from the media.) While much effort and money has been spent (since the 1940s and continuing) on providing redress for land and other resources that may have been unjustly taken, the focus has now shifted to the question of our rights as citizens. Here the position of those lacking a Maori ancestor is being eroded thanks to the fraudulent and nonsense interpretation of the Treaty as a “partnership” between the Crown and Maori. The appointment of unelected people with an affiliation to a Maori tribe to City Councils for example or to similar bodies is a slap in the face for democracy and for the civil and political rights of non-Maori which are diminished by the practice. Let’s not do this, nothing good will come of it.

Keeping Stock

Late last year, I saw a post on FB inviting people to apply to go into the ballot for an invitation to the Bledisloe Garden Reception at Government House in Wellington. Naturally, my Scottish heritage dictated that I should apply for this free afternoon tea, and blow me down, just before Christmas we received the invitation to attend.

So off to Wellington we go this afternoon. We’ve read through all the etiquette, so we won’t make a faux pas, and at some point we will meet Dame Patsy and her hubby Sir David.

On this day, when we are supposed to celebrate being one people, I think it’s kind of cool that ordinary folk from the provinces like us get there chance to go and hob-nob with the hoi polloi, and that’s just one of the reasons why I am proud to be a New Zealander.

  In past year’s invitations were sent to members of the public, their names and addresses randomly selected from the electoral role. Invitations were also sent to individuals with a community service record as appreciation of their service.

  I also have the possibility of escape. But my other citizenship is UK and there’s no fucking way I would want to go there! I’d rather stay in good old Kiwiland. I left UK to get away from the whining poms but it’ll be far worse now under the murderous Muslims. Soon my passport won’t allow me to settle in peace in the South of France either…..

The only red for me is that of Manchester United

The Chief Executive for the Southern District Health board informs the public that 460 surgeries had to be postponed in the Southern DHB district due to the two 48 hour strikes by junior doctors. That’s 460 people and their families affected. A staggering high number. What is the overall total number of people nationwide affected by these strikes? It’s safe to say that much of the surgery is for older persons. Having their surgery cancelled only adds to the stress for those who just wish to have an easy retirement without hassles. Some of that $100 million from the PGF surely could have been used for addressing some of the Junior doctors concerns.

  You see she is very upset that 320 former members of her union left to set up their own collective bargaining group and more are joining them.
  
  They were apparently less than impressed with her $900,000+ remuneration and bonus based on dispute outcomes.

    Money is an issue for Pharmac, granted, but I’m not certain that private insurers will cough up for non-Pharmac approved Meds or necessarily send you to Aussie to get them. It’s a case by case. So insurance is not a panacea in this situation that this woman raises.

I just happened to notice a small story about Pharmac to all of the people who are complaining about Pharmac and how much quicker and cheaper that people can access them in Australia than they can in NZ for their love ones that have cancer. Now before I give our PM’s reply didn’t Andrew Little and Annette King condemn the National Party for this before the last election and promise this would never happen under their watch, even going to the extent of bringing drug companies to NZ and winning and dining them to achieve better deals. But back to Jacinda and her message to the cancer patients who feel let down by the the Government. It is not fair to compare Pharmac with the Australian system as it takes significantly longer to approve new drugs than in Australia. Well aren’t Labour and Jacinda hypocrites as it was ok that they blamed the same system when National were in power and promised to fix it, okay with a different Leader but now want to cry foul because they are on the end of the criticism I find hypocritical.

        Pharmac does a good job but it needs much more money.
        
        Even if it had more money, there’d still be no guarantee it would commit such large amounts to ensuring people who are dying can spend a few more months doing it than they would have otherwise. Higher-value spending would always take priority, unless you had a pretty-much infinite budget.

The Prime Minister said this today.

“Equality was not a bridge” between the the Māori and Pākehā worlds, she said. Bringing the two peoples together would be cultural as well as economic – more te reo fluency, and better integration of treaty principles into everyday life”.

I fundamentally disagree with this. Maori culture is not my culture. I respect it and would take lessons about how to respect it more, especially in my professional dealings with Maori men and women. But reading the Prime Minister literally, I will be required to adopt Maori culture. And I really do not want the principles of the Treaty to govern my “every day life”.

  What Maori culture? Each tribe is different and don’t want outsiders shoe-horning in. Let us respect each other. Te Reo is not fit for purpose as a modern language but has important use on a Marae. That is not for most of us.

I enjoyed a coffee with a retired cop from Utah who was holidaying in NZ with his wife.

Thought our country was beautiful but could not understand our political system. He had been here for 3 weeks so had been following what was happening.

He could see that our Govt was corrupt and run by self serving idiots. He asked what we were doing about it.

He suggested that we do something rather than sit around chewing the fat. He likened the Nats to be Repubicans who don’t really go for public disorder unlike the Democrats who are the left.

He figures it’s time to give them a taste of their own medicine and hit the streets.

Just watched most of Trumps speach to congress.

What a guy.
Pelosi is stuffed I’d reckon. He had the Democrat women standing and applauding him en mass.

Interesting watching who stood and who didn’t.
Unfortunately the herald ran out of money or something and didn’t go to the end.
Worth a watch if you want to see how a leader gets stuff done and worth a watch as a political show. Better at that than all those so called actors who were leaving the states.

Okay the data shows that

Aly was just 20 weeks pregnant. Hospital policy was to attempt resuscitation only on babies born after 23 weeks.

This is Counties Manukau where 85% of pre 23wk births are Maori, Pacifica or Indian

Babies of certain ethnicities are significantly less likely to be resuscitated…

Yes, correct because they are covered by DHBs that do not resuscitate before 23 weeks

So what you have that’s causing this apparent discrepancy is the difference between individual DHBs policies. CM is disproportionately (for want of a better words) non-white and there is a disproportionate number of pre-23 week births in the non-white community. It’s a very large community so the difference in approach to resus there compared to other DHBs will have a significant impact on the overall percentages.

Look at this way, hypothetically:
DHB A with a high non-white population has 100 births of pre-23wks and does not resus. 85 are non-white while 15 are white.

OK, 100% white & 100% non-white non-resus

DHB B is reversed and has a high white population, Remuera let’s say, it attempts resus at 21 weeks. It’s a smaller demographic area, we’ll say half the size of CM so it only has 50 pre-23wks births. Now the 85% incidence is the same but the demographic is only 30% non-white. So we have 30% of 42 births or 14 non-white births and 36 white births where resus is attempted.

Now add them all together and what you have is
Non-white births: 99
resus attempted = 14
resus not attempted = 85
White births: 51
resus attempted = 36
resus not attempted = 15

Bald percentages without context say that resus is attempted 2.5x more often on white babies than non-white babies.

This is why the figures in that article don’t hold water. The issue is what’s known as a postcode-lottery. ie if you’re non-white you’re more likely to be living under a DHB that doesn’t attempt resus as early as other DHB’s it’s not racism it’s down to where you live.

  Your concluding paragraph is what I assumed to be a possible explanation when the Herald first published its story with the differences in resuscitation rates between different areas and the fairly small differences in ethnic resuscitation rates, but I couldn’t be bothered working some examples.
  
  Unfortunately, researchers anxious to push a message and statistically ignorant reporters conclude too easily that the answer is racism, rather than some non-racist factor omitted from the analysis.

      ‘Fraid not. It’s absolutely down to which DHB you fall under, they have different ages at which they will attempt resuscitation.
      
      Remember this is about attempts not about survival rates.
      
      The allegation made was that Maori prem babies are not resuscitated because of ethnicity – they are not resuscitated at the same rate because of DHB policies. And those policies apply to all ethnicities equally.

And we’ll do Maori incarceration rates very quickly:

30% of prison inmates are gang-members or prospects or hangarounds. The gangs represented in prison are almost exclusively the Mongrel Mob and Black Power. MM & BP are almost exlusively non-white. MM & BP are criminal by nature and design.

Okay, I’m not discussing why this is, only the 58% statistic that you raise. So given that we can remove the 30% gang members as they were heading for incarceration anyway, that leaves 28% Maori non-gang members etc.

So as the data I gave you earlier says that 12.5% o the population are responsible for 42% of arrests they’re 3.5x more likely to be arrested, we can extrapolate and say that they’re 3.5x more likely to be convicted and incarcerated if the proportions follow through.

Without the context of what crimes were committed, ie were they crimes of violence or other offences that are imprisonable we can’t say whether the 58% or even the 28% is disproportionate – what the crimes were that led to conviction is a crucial and missing piece of evidence in your hypothesis.

Are Maori more prone to commit crimes of violence? Well we all have our own opinions on that but given that their culture reveres aggression and staunchness it’s not a huge leap to make. Look at child abuse and domestic violence figures, Maori offenders are massively disproportionately over-represented in the statistics – again I’m not discussing why I’m discussing pure numbers.

So we have a societal group that (a) prides itself on its aggression, (b) commits a huge amount of familial violence (c) belongs to criminal gangs in disproportionate numbers. Is it any wonder that their incarceration rates are hugely above the average for other parts of society?

      A challenge as a greeting? Most of the world has moved on to a handshake or a bow as a symbol of respect. A challenge by its very nature is aggressive.
      
      I haven’t looked up Maori violent crime statistics recently – I can if you really want me too – but if we just take spousal abuse and child abuse stats they seem to be a fairly clear indicator of a substantial and disproportionate problem.

        BTW I have friends and acquaintances from, at the last count, maybe 13 different ethnicities and of similar socio-economic backgrounds. Other than myself it’s only the Maori acquaintances that I have who sometimes become incredibly aggressive when arguing a point – and in some instances have threatened violence.
        
        Apocryphal of course but that’s my experience.

  WD, that’s a great post. I find your argument compelling aside from area, you can’t ignore the why.
  Also instead of making these projections they can be made by social-economic factors, and the story would remain similar and colour blind.
  That’s probably what I have found troubling about today’s posts on KB, what comes first chicken/egg.

    They dead-heat for last. It’s not ‘being’ Maori that causes poverty, violence, crime nor failure. It’s that Maori culture promotes these conditions.
    
    I’d argue that Maori generally don’t value education….result poverty. Maori value egalitarianism (unless they’re tribal elite)….result anyone who gets their shit together is swamped with workshy ‘rellies’. Maori value ‘staunchness’…..result they close ranks & protect criminals & child bashers.
    
    Nothing but nothing, be it money, land or grovelling apologies for past wrongs will change these cultural attitudes an iota. Only Maori themselves can & the will to do so has to come from their own people.

    I never suggested I would discuss the why. The claim was that a 58% Maori prison population was caused by a racist justice system. That is demonstrably false. And BTW extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
    
    Similarly the percentages for prem baby resus rates was used to posit a racist agenda by misuse of data and selective quoting.
    
    Is there a problem? Absolutely
    Do I have the answers Absolutely not
    Is it down to “systemic racism?” Not on your life
    
    The biggest reason for the poor health outcomes discussed is where you live. And probably true of crime stats too.

      Comparing your baby resus and crime posts, in one you showed it was more likely location than race, I think the crime one has a valid comparison, it’s socio-economic not (just) race.
      
      Nasska I think the same argument can apply, we could also say poor white trash instead of Maori in your post.
      
      I agree 100% that no one in the beehive will make a difference, especially this current bunch, it is up to the individual, his family (sooo tempted to say whanau to wind some ppl up?) and immediate community.

        The question is, as far as I can see, is it the “white man’s burden” as in who has the the responsibility to raise someone up or is it the job of society to give them the tools to raise themselves up?
        
        Before I’m accused of being an arch right winger, I’m actually a Labour man. But a Labour man of the days of the WEA etc, where people recognised the value of self-improvement and MY Labour party helped give them the tools for that self-improvement.
