I was sceptical at the three National MP’s in Wellington calling for a Crown Observer to be appointed to the Greater Wellington Regional Council to ‘observe’ its bus contract management. However looking at the Local Government Act it is the ‘lowest’ of the three levels of intervention that the Local Government Minister can take. I would be opposed to the higher levels of intervention (‘Crown Manager’ and ‘Commission’) as I think Wellington needs to stew in its own juices over this. Perhaps people will take more care who they vote for in this years local body elections – but the tribal Labour supporters will probably still support councillors who want to build tram lines with other peoples money for other people to use.
I think the ‘Crown Observer’ move is a cunning one since it puts pressure on Labour/ NZF while at the same time does not intervening in the governance or management of the Council.

    Went along to the Newtown Festival, where among other attractions, Mayor Justin and local MP Paul had put up a large whiteboard inviting people’s suggestions on how to make Wellington even better.
    
    I looked carefully at what people had written. Every single suggestion was a variant on “Spend more of other people’s money on stuff that I want”. Cycle ways and a living wage for everybody were among the favourites.

  I read the article and cannot see anything untoward with the Defence lawyer’s conduct. Her job is to cast shadows of doubt on the Prosecution case, she does not have to prove that her client did not do the alleged deed. Her approach here was quite orthodox.

    Technically you are right, but a baby is dead, why in the world would a person try to defend that action. The parents had the courage to admit their fault and plead guilty. This piece of shit, probably encouraged by her lawyer, decides to turn the brutal killing of a baby into a “money fest”.
    
    What’s wrong with a lawyer saying, “you did it, plead guilty and let’s cut the shit”.
    
    But no, let’s use every possible strategy to undermine the defense and put a child killer back out onto the street without sanction. She won’t even be paying the lawyer, we will be.

      It’s a vexed question that comes up from time to time on Kiwiblog. The “provocation defense” of Colin Weatherston springs to mind, and whatever efforts were made to defend Liam Reid (murdered and sexually assualted the deaf woman in Chch).
      
      It’s the system as much as the lawyers. The idea is that the defendant should have the best opportunity possible to defend themselves against the resources of the state, and to present whatever mitigating circumstances available when it comes to sentencing. It’s not their lawyer’s job to decide the guilt or the sentence – that’s the jury and judge. Another way of looking at it – the better job the lawyer does, the fewer grounds for appeal (of the conviction or the sentence).
      
      Frankly, I wouldn’t have the stomach for it. But if you buy into the system, it makes a certain sense.

        This is the system that has evolved over the centuries starting in England and when the rich and powerful held all the cards. It is not perfect but a historically brutal system was progressively refined into the reasonable system we have today.
        Having a jury was a very important refinement but I wonder if they are still relevant. Juries have become almost obsolete for civil trials and perhaps the time has come to consider their relevance for criminal trials. Having a judge and two assessors may be a better way to go and would cut out much of the BS that goes with a jury trial.

    E-scooters are a dilemma for AT, they do not how to respond to the phenomenon, honestly.
    
    In one breath they love them and classify them “active mode” transport, because E-scooter users are not using a car.
    
    But in the next breath, they don’t want them, because:
    1. They are not actually “active mode” transport (cycling & walking);
    2. They are dangerous, reported incidents are greater than Ĺime have been reporting;
    3. They are a nuisance on both the footpaths and the roads. There are no regulations and cannot be policed – until there is a fatality.
    
    So, AT would prefer them to just go away.

  TV3 also owned by Media Works runs the Michael Jackson documentary at the same time and coincidentally it rates it’s balls off.

    Two Boys have come forward now, for the documentary. Many more have come forward in the past. Jackson was tried before the courts for the assaults on two other boys but got off because americans are dense and always have stars in their eyes…think OJ Simpson. A third boy was paid a multi million dollar settlement to STFU. That’s 5 so far. There are a couple more who were obvious victims, including McAuley Culkin, but they are still denying it, ,…probably through shame, embarrassment or pressure from the Jackson camp.

    …..I read that these two boys have tried suing the estate but the judge found the case had no merit…..let the man rest in peace…..yes he was strange…..yes he was odd…..but he had an odd and strange life…..was robbed of his childhood and I think was continuously trying to get that back…..one of these two boys had a seven year relationship with MJ’s niece…..MJ introduced the pair…..easy to make a one sided documentary…..

      You need to watch the documentary. 4 hours and hard to watch. It completely changed my mind about Jackson. Definitely a pedo. Those two men and their families are very damaged by it. MJ had a string of handsome young boys, never girls, as ‘best’ friends who slept with him. He had a pattern of embedding himself in the families, and gradually moving their sons closer to himself. His former maid was threatened by the family when she spoke up, about what she had to clean up at Neverland. Look it up online. Five former boy ‘ friends’ have now accused MJ of abuse.   The Catholic priests are judged harshly even before the court appearances, yet MJ is held in high esteem, even when alive. His behaviour with children would preclude him from being employed in any of our government agencies, but because of his fame he is looked on by some as a child loving saint.         Sorry, I found this an interesting question. From what I can tell the root of our world “evil” existed before those speakers encountered Chrisitanity – so the concept was there before the Christian Satan. But you’re right in that nowdays that figure is seen as the embodiment of “evil”.

  It’s because there’s been a big movie made about it called “Leaving Neverland” that has also just screened over two nights in New Zealand (after being shown in Cannes or something). The movie focuses on one of his accusers, now grown, who details all the things Jackson supposedly did to him and others. The guy really is only using the medium of film as a weapon to accuse a dead man.
  
  I don’t know if what he says is true or not, but in this #metoo age, the media have used it as an excuse to not play Jackson’s music any more.
  
  The accuser actually testified at MJs trial back in 2005 that nothing sexual happened between them, but now has seen this as a money making opportunity. I saw a timeline somewhere of the things this guy has done and he has basically abused every opportunity given to him – cheated on MJ’s niece (who Jackson set him up with), and others, etc

This morning on the powerline blog they have a very interesting article about the real costs of green energy in the American state of Minnesota. In Minnesota there is a proposal to increase the renewable energy to 50% by 2030.
Minnesota is a good case study that is applicable to New Zealand. It is of a similar area – 225,000 km² as opposed to New Zealand’s 268,000 km². It has a similar population – 5 1/2 million as opposed to New Zealand’s 4 1/2 million.

According to intensive research by powerline the cost of green energy for Minnesota would be $80 billion, every household would pay an extra $1200 per year and electricity prices would rise 40%.

Apparently in Minnesota there are many days in winter when the sun doesn’t shine and there are many days when the wind doesn’t blow.

The cost of even this “modest” green energy proposal would be 21,000 less jobs and reduction of the state’s GDP by over $3 billion a year. As the writer says green energy would be one small step towards Venezuela.

  Putting aside the green energy as a general issue, I think that Minnesota would NOT be a good case study for NZ (I’ve lived in that part of the world). Looking at area and population is too simplistic. First, because of it’s terrain it doubt that it has the same sort of capacity for hydroelectric generation or windpower compared to NZ. I doubt that there is much geothermal opportunity either. On the other side, the winters there are savage and long. Living in comfort requires a lot more energy than in a more temperate climate such as NZ.
  By all means make a case for the limitations of green energy in NZ, but using Minnesota as a bench mark seems a poor way to do it.

    Good points SGA. I certainly agree it is not a straight comparison at all points but I think there are a lot of similarities we should heed before we jump straight into green energy.
    
    Regarding NZ what is the real effectiveness of wind power? I look to the Manawatu and their no doubt expensive wind mills. Have they been cost effective? There are lots of days when the wind doesn’t blow. Or when the wind is blowing many of the wind mills appear to be locked down and not turning.
    
    Hydro electric which you cite as effective gets huge opposition from environmentalists.
    
    Solar energy seems good but again in NZ there are many days when the sun doesn’t shine.
    
    Minnesota provides us with a good example of the bankrupting costs and relative ineffectiveness of green energy. I’m unconvinced we can afford it here either.

      The key factor here is reliability.
      
      Hydro and Geo-thermal are reliable, performance threats are normally seasonal and can be planned for long in advance.
      
      They also function to demand.

  Fact: Despite decades of trying, nobody has yet come up with a way around this problem.
  
  Because of these two facts, wind/solar energy cannot make up more than (at most) 20-25% of the power grid while maintaining a reliable, on-demand supply. This is the harsh reality. It remains true regardless of how much money we spend, and remains true regardless of how long Greenies stubbornly refuse to accept it. Wind and solar energy are fundamentally limited technologies, and can never be more than a minor part of our energy future.

    Educate me here. I’ve always had the idea, perhaps wrongly, that things like wind and solar weren’t to be thought of as sole or main providers (because of their intermittent nature), but more as part of a diverse portfolio of energy sources. As a crude example, when there is plenty of wind or sun then you can save some of your water for times when you need it more. Is that not the general idea?       The problem with the idea of wind/solar being part of a diversified generation portfolio is simply, “diversified into what else?”
      
      Hydro is great, but there are only so many suitable rivers, and we’re already using most of those. Geothermal vents are even scarcer. We can’t realistically expect to expand on these sources very much. Tidal doesn’t exist yet, and has the same intermittency issue as wind/solar. Most environmentalists take it as an axiom that nuclear power is unacceptable. Fossil fuels are exactly what we’re trying to get away from… and at this point we have ruled out pretty much every known form of power generation except a treadmill.

        Hydro – Is it true that we have exhausted those possibilities? I have no idea to be honest, but I would be surprised. I’d suggest the major impediment would be those who don’t want rivers and valleys to become lakes.
        
        Nuclear – my sense is that the anti-nuclear
        power generation feeling is less than it used to be? Even if that were the case, there would be a certain amount of nimby complaints. Somewhere close to Auckland and away from fault lines would make sense – say Waiheke Island 🙂 🙂 :-). On the other hand, I would prefer is that our electricity production wasn’t reliant in the long term on overseas resources.
        
        Don’t know much about tidal – while it is intermittent, its periodicity is predictable and thus more manageable than solar or wind. Not sure how effective it is or will become though.

But hydroelectricity is just such a no-brainer for safe, cheap generation that I’d be surprised if most suitable rivers weren’t dammed well before the existance of RMA-type legislation. If there are lots of suitable rivers out there, then yes, expanding hydro would be a good element of our energy future, and I’d be all for it. But as I said, I’d be surprised if this is the case.
        
        Nuclear – while I get the same sense that opposition is fading (in part because of awareness of climate-change), it’s definitely still around. Building a nuclear power-plant in NZ is probably politically unrealistic. Which I find unfortunate, since my view is that large-scale use of nuclear power is the only way we are going to be able to cease using fossil fuels.
        
        The problem with being on a fault line is real, but IMO gets over-stated a lot. Japan has the same issue and still uses nuclear power for most of its electricity. (And before Fukushima gets mentioned, Daiichi-1 shut-down safely during the quake, and with minor design changes would have withstood the tsunami as well).
        
        Regarding dependence on foreign resources, I think this is unavoidable for a nation the size of NZ. Even today we import most of our oil. And uranium we could import from Australia – as close and as friendly a supplier as we could get.

    “Wind flow is unpredictable. When the company first started operations, it assumed that it could achieve 160 gigawatts of production per year.
    
    “This was later changed to 140 GWH and then to 130 GWH. Whilst we have occasionally operated at an annual rate close to this, it has never been achieved over a full year, so this year we again reduced it to 120 GWH, production we did not achieve this in 2018.

    I don’t think that a no deal Brexit is on the cards at all, actually. The House of Commons has just had a free vote and has against leaving without a deal. Thus fucking up one of the basic tennets of negotiation – revealing to the other party exactly how far you are willing to go.

    Nothing more could have been expected. Britain’s decision to leave was a hostile act from the EU perspective. The joining documents set the exit terms, anything else is a bonus.
    Britain had to leave–EU control was appalling. Both parties don’t want havoc so commonsense terms will emerge very rapidly. A clean break leaves a clean wound which is more rapidly healed.

The part of the Judges sentencing notes that I found somewhat intriguing, was where he granted the Police request, “….that Pell be required to provide an intimate sample for DNA purposes, and that Police may use *whatever force necessary* in obtaining that sample”

        He felt good enough to go to work, no loss of consciousness and nothing broken, so he obviously only went to hospital for the media it would bring. Surprised at his ignorance of basic victimology – should have rung his PR team and headed straight there to make it look worse.
        
        Adults playing rugby receive as bad or worse on a weekly basis, as do people who do amateur boxing or other martial arts – all without drama.
        
        Being assaulted is occasionally scary and makes you very angry after-the-fact (I’ve been attacked on the street out-of-the blue 4 times in my life), once just walking through a park to work, but it is generally no big deal, with only superficial injury and probably happens to most males a couple of times in their lives.

‘One of the coup-leaders apparently(if we interpret his Delphic comments correctly) saying Prayuth will be PM regardless of the election result, thanks to the senate he is personally appointing.’
Prayuth is the current PM and defacto dictator. He was head of the army when they staged the coup.
So far the courts have dissolved the main opposition party and have their eye on another party that could be a threat at the polls.
My wife, who has shown skant interest in politics in the past is much more involved these days, but is diametrically opposed to her sister’s views so she keeps quite for the sake of family unity.

The eerie wailing sound echoing through the deserted remains of the downturn area of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, strongly resembled that country’s indigenous people’s songs. But I soon discovered the cause; it was the sound of the siren announcing the nightly cutizens’ curfew from the now empty Sky Tower.

The impending destruction of New Zealand was only recognised by a few when the leader of an extreme minority (7%) party installed a Marxist government in 2017. In hindsight, it should have been obvious that this once prosperous and forward thinking little country was destined to fail. But the extent of its failure has staggered even the most realistic of commentators and social historians.

The demise started early when the Marxist/Green/Opportunist government moved immediately upon siezing power against the country’s own energy sector. This sent a clear message which should have been too staggeringly open to ignore; but in the wake of this things only got worse. The Marxists then nenacted a series of punitive taxes and controls against the productive sector which effectively killed off the economy within two years and introduced draconian ‘climate’ laws which closed down the farming sector and throttled the lives of even the non-productive.

Probably the most ignored warning signs were in the open corruption of their prime minister in moving to protect a convicted foreign drug dealer and the blatant bribery emanating from a ‘provincial growth fund’ which was designed to buy the votes of the indigenous people.

These were the early signs of deep trouble and the whole litany has been endlessly regurgitated by international commentators and is too long to go into here. But suffice it to say that the prime minister’s resignation in 2020 and her subsequent appointment as the UN Climate Commissioner didn’t do anything to give the country relief as the chaos of the Marxist/Green/Indigenous Alliance which took control only served to make things worse.

I looked at the Venezuelan peacekeeper manning the barricade at the deserted uncompleted light rail interchange and we exchanged nervous glances. He had seen it all before in Caracas years ago and foreign ‘peacekeeping’ was now the only way for him to earn enough to feed his family back home, where things were very similar to here.

In the distance around the university area the sound of gunfire could faintly be heard as night fell on this desperate benighted city that had once held such charm and hope.

  I’m reading a fascinating book at the moment, ‘Liberty’s Last Stand’ by Stephen Coonts. (Those familiar with Coonts’ work will be pleased that this is another step in the Jake Grafton/Tommy Carmellini story.) Set in modern America, it describes the events following a series of Islamist attack and how this was used by the president to declare martial law , suspend the Constitution, and cancel the imminent presidential election. In response, Texas secedes from the Union, leading to internal civil war. With the country in flames, riots in cities, and the military pitted against each other, the American people are confronted with the ultimate political question – who are we, and what do we strand for, and what are we prepared to do about it?
  Despite what you might be thinking, the renegade president is not Trump – it is his predecessor. The book was published in 2016. It is nevertheless a Democrat v Republican battle such as we are beginning to see.
  
  Well worth reading if you want to see how easy it is for a civilised modern nation to disintegrate.

….it’s also a cornerstone of our democracy that we give up some rights to the state which in turn has a duty to protect all its citizens , and not to empty the prisons making the streets very dangerous.

FFS Tamati Coffee should fit an inclinometer like the ones they use in yacht racing to the huge tiki he wears around his neck,that way he could take weekly readings off it and report about how much his gut has grown in the last week.

    Ahh Doctor Who (knows nothing about Climate Science) … the people who do know something about climate science can’t agree on a whole bunch of stuff. Very learned scientists are at loggerheads over a range of things, most notably CO2. Is the atmosphere saturated wrt to Co2, and if so vertically throughout the whole atmosphere or only at the surface. How exactly does CO2 “warm” the atmosphere and which is prominent, Conduction, Radiation or Convection? How exactly does CO2 and H2O vapour interact as some say the CO2 results in cooling. Why does CO2 always lag heating by about 800 years during the last million or so and why is there absolutely no correlation between CO2 and temperature for most of the last 600 mil years? How is it that CO2 has almost reached a point (about 200PPM) where green life will become extinct? Why is Mann’s Hocky Stick so demostrably full of errors and why does he sue anyone that says so? Why is no one reporting that the erath has been cooling since 1998, or that the 1930’s were the warmest years in living memory….. But the science is settled. Jacinda said its our “Nuclear ” moment.. People from Agentina or Chile or Canada who come here cannot believe how high our wages are.
You cannot keep putting them up and expect to stay competitive overseas.
If lattes and beer at a bar becomes too dear tourists will not come.
If we cannot sell our milk or apples because they are too dear, we will have no jobs.

‘Blood on their hands’: Hamilton reviews ‘culturally sensitive’ street names

There is blood on the hands of many of the people behind Hamilton’s historic street and place names, the city council was told as councillors voted to review the names for “cultural appropriateness”.

Māngai Māori appointee to the regulatory and hearings committee, James Whetu, said at today’s public forum that reviewing the names was a public healing matter for many Māori. “If I can be provocative and say there is blood on the hands of many of those names in Hamilton, and it does create a cultural offence to Māori here in Waikato, he said.

Hopefully they won’t decide to rename any Hamilton streets to historically-accurate names like Cannibal Drive!
