I don’t understand why the New Zealand media is dazzled by Eminem. He is a misogynistic rap singer with a criminal record for assault.

Here are some typical lyrics :

“They ain’t say I can’t rap about coke no more
Slut, you think I won’t choke no whore
Til the vocal cords don’t work in her throat no more?!”

Now if that is your genre then fine. Music is a personal thing. My puzzlement is specifically about how the New Zealand media, that castigated New Zealand law firms for their treatment of women under the #Me too wave, reconciles its breathless and unquestioning reporting of this guy?

  Yep and on the radio yesterday it was reported that some 400 charges have already been laid under the new choking/strangling criminal behaviour legislation.
  Eminem would also no doubt have been really impressed with the Labour led rap re killing John Key and raping his daughter.

      Simple. police reports would have indicated that a number of domestic assaults involved strangulation which could not meet the threshold for Attempted Murder, but placed the assault above common assault.
      
      I imagine a great number of these assaults involved strangulation before, and had this option been available, there would have been just as many charges.
      
      What I do not agree with is the media presenting these numbers as evidence the problem is getting worse. It’s a problem that has existed for some time, and is perpetrated by both genders.

    I could explain the media infatuation with Eminem on the basis that journalists are just plain stupid. So they don’t have the ability to reconcile this adoration with their recent attacks on law firms for misogyny.

I think we all understand that the Capital Gains Tax (or Caucasian Gains Tax as it is now popularly known, because the Maoris certainly won’t be paying any white man’s tax) is deliberately set high – so Thick Cindy can ride in on a white horse and slay the dragons.

And heroically make the contributions much less… but still let the CGT genie out of the bottle – so next time, they can jack it up.

But I think the whole debate (or ‘conversation’ as she likes to call these things) is going to bite Jacinda on the ass big time.

By the time she pulls the pin and ‘listens to the voters’, many of them in the centre will be mightily pissed off, not relieved. I expect them to punish her at the ballot box because:

1: They will realize the point made above or
2: They will think she wasted a lot of money for no reason or
3: They will think she is deeply untrustworthy or
4: They will have been frightened to death for no apparent reason.

This last point is the worst for Cindy, because there are an awful lot of older folks who think the assets they want to leave to their kids will be raped, or their share portfolio that is there to give them a bit more to come and go on in their retirement will be raped.

  They (the “centre” voters) proved in 2017 that they are bloody stupid, have proved in polls since that that stupidity is a permanent state for most and will continue to vote for the talking head the slime puts on their TV and computer screens every day no matter how totally unfit for purpose it is.

    Actually, the center vote not only continued to vote for the center and center right in 2017, but actually did so in larger numbers than 2014. In fact nearly 21000 more.
    
    The left vote was mobilised and Labours and rose from 604535 to 956184.
    
    The Green vote dropped by 100000 and NZ First by about 20000.
    
    The Center did not change their vote, it’s just that the left showed up, and Winston handed them the keys.

      Actually the “centre” vote did not continue to vote for the center and center right in 2017, it went to the charlatan from St Mary’s Bay – neither centre nor right (in any sense of the word).
      
      Now it has, according to the polls, gone to the worst, most corrupt and (thankfully) incompetent bunch of clowns ever to disgrace the Government benches in New Zealand.

        in 2014, National got 1,131,501 votes. In 2017, National got 1,152,075 votes.
        
        Questions that should be asked are Where did the 92000 Conservative Party Votes go? They dropped from 95000 to 3000
        
        TOP went from zero to 62000.
        
        The best case scenario is that the conservatives either stayed away, or went to National.
        
        NZ First went from 208000 to 186000, so I don’t think the center right went there.

    Really? My memory is that it has bubbled along for decades – a quick look at Wikipedia

    In November 1979, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Allan Highet, suggested that the design of the flag should be changed, and sought an artist to design a new flag with a silver fern on the fly. The proposal attracted little support.
    In 1988, Minister of Foreign Affairs Russell Marshall made a call for a flag change, which also had little effect.
    In February 1992, the former Minister of Māori Affairs, Matiu Rata, called for a flag change “to re-establish our national identity”.
    In 1998, Prime Minister Jenny Shipley backed Cultural Affairs Minister Marie Hasler’s call for the flag to be changed.
    
    Oddly, Clark’s name doesn’t appear in that Wikipedia entry, but that could just be vagaries of the source. Whatever, it’s probably unfair to try and saddle her with all the blame in this instance. Moreover, Key seemed genuinely keen on the idea in his own right.

      In 2004 Helen Clark spoke at a business seminar I attended at a hotel in Wellington. The topic was republicanism and she stated inter-alia that NZ’s flag would be changed….not that it might be changed or that it would be up for debate but that it would be changed as a step on the road. In hindsight JK was unwise to pick-up that particular baton.

Products that New Zealand have an abundance of for the population are leaving the shelves because of a combo of petrol and tax and a move to spend on what little ‘luxuries’ can be afforded in a ‘tight’ economy.       I think we can safely assume that changes will be made to MMP before the next election to reduce the 5% threshold to 4%.
      
      It can be voted in with the support of the 3 CoL parties and given the need for it to keep both the greens and potentially Winston first in contention I think it’s a safe bet.
      
      It does make it easier for the likes of Conservative etc to get in but still unlikely they will succeed.
      
      I actually prefer the coat tail provision than the 5% one. If you represent your people and win a seat then you deserve to bring your clan with you.

      The original MMP Royal Commission recommended 4% , the Major review ( by national …hahahaha) around 2012 recommended 4%

        NZ does have a constitution, ztev, and you should learn a little bit about that before throwing loose, categorical comments to the wind.
        
        My own description would be that NZ’s constitution is not contained in a single, formal document. It comprises a recognised pool of legislative enactments, Parliamentary procedures and conventions, major constitutional enactments of “the old country” pre-NZ’s independence, and precedents set by the highest Courts in this country. Probably, too, the Treaty of Waitangi. But, having written that, I’ve found this source material which is much more authoritative:

I see a company down in Dunedin will have a collective contract written for it by the courts because they couldn’t agree on wages with their union members (after 6odd years of negotiations).

This is despite the company have about 7 union members in an employee pool of 200.

    I say “lie”, because to repeat an erroneous claim repeatedly, ignoring correction, surely counts as a lie.
    
    Switzerland is sometimes cited as not having one, but capital gains taxes and or property transfer taxes are imposed locally in that country, by cantons.
    
    Of those three OECD members without CGT (including NZ), Belgium has a high property transfer tax (10 per cent to 12.5 per cent, depending on whether you are in the French of Flemish regions), and Singapore has a property tax – its details here:

        In the part of it that applies to share trading it requires the trader to have intention to trade, and do you know anyone who has that? ?
        
        Anyone who has succumbed to political propaganda and is remotely thinking of relocating a business to CGT-free Belgium if NZ gets a CGT should consider this. Among Belgium’s taxes there is a 32.5% social security tax on Belgian companies, and in addition they have to collect 13.02% of this tax from employees.

        Woz, you are misled by the Tax Foundation list that claims 12 countries in the OECD have no capital gains tax. Here are the links that can prove that only three of the 36 OECD members have no CGT, and the three are Singapore, Belgium, and New Zealand.
        
        1. Belgium, correct, but it has a stamp duty on property purchase – 12.5 per cent in the French-speaking parts of Belgium, 10 per cent in the Flemish region.
        
        2. Mexico – the Tax Foundation is wrong. Mexico applies a capital gains tax on residential property of 25% on the gross sales value of the transaction without any deductions or between 1.92% and 35% on thevalue of the gain.   And we are well on the way there without it, I`m in earthmoving and after looking forward to a shitload of work at the end of last season, we`re down by 67% this year and we`re not the only ones, there`s another well known West Auckland contractor who has only one truck working and we are having one of the best summers for a long time.

        Seriously, conversions of sheep and crop farms to dairying, provide much of the irrigation demand in the South Island. Dairying economically justifies the capital cost, the big power bills, and the price of just getting the water.
        
        The conversion rate has fallen steeply, because of poorer dairy outlook, Green demands on pollution, because the better land for dairying has mostly been converted, and because of opposition to conversions in some regions (such as the McKenzie Country).

      Waikatogirl, I don’t think that depreciation provisions are abandoned in tax regimes with capital gains tax.
      
      This means construction firms (cranes and so on), and even more earthmoving firms, should see no capital gain in hard times.
      
      However, it becomes interesting if capital value declines can be offset against say, company tax and income tax (for sole businesses), and whether declines can be accumulated for use as offsets in later periods.

        Whoops, I’m wrong. Depreciation provisions come into play in offsetting value decline against company or income tax.
        
        However, they do reflect a tax regime’s recognition that values of some assets (of most apart from property) decline.
        
        As an aside, as one of the few Kiwibloggers defending the suggestions/recommendations for a capital gains tax, I admit that my humble personal view does not favour a CGT for NZ. I think property taxes as in Singapore, or transfer taxes as in Belgium (the other two OECD countries with capital gains taxes) would be better for NZ’s economy and NZ’s future.

        “New Zealand First has negotiated an amendment in policy with the Labour Party and the Green Party, under which a Belgium-style property transfer tax will be instituted in New Zealand rather than a capital gains tax.
        
        “This will allow a targeted, precise focus on currently tax-free property transactions and will be a better economic instrument with which to retrim the economy.   Most of those countries with a CGT also have a far lower corporate tax rate, ours is pretty high at 28%. One could argue not having a CGT is our competitive advantage compared to those other countries. I didn’t see that smug twat Cullen suggest lowering our business tax rates if a CGT is implemented, no he wants to screw them twice. Add to that a $20 minimum wage, businesses must be fuming.

  Raise rates but not repeal any of those pesky ‘targeted rates’. I live in one of those areas where I pay for my rubbish to be collected, so they can’t even deliver the basics under budget. I’ve done a few AC surveys and they are pretty much feel good nonsense with no meaningful say in how the money is spent, e.g. Love it, quite like, don’t mind. That is about the range of choices you get. I know via friends that even elected members can’t get anything done – boards stand no chance.

  The way to go is internet learning: Youtube, the big internet exchange programs where you can talk on Skype with native speakers, the way you can get relatively cheap online tuition from native speakers …

It is actually planned to be longer than four weeks, which is not particularly clever planning – Ardern’s uni degree in Communication and PR?
If their presentation of the possibilities so far is an indication of any enactment to follow, we are fucked.

[ And this is all, historically – if you remember – because of arguments over a farm water tax and the uncertainty that produced pre-Election. with Ardern suddenly realising people would not vote for vagueness, so shoved it all sideways into a Tax Working Group that came up with a capital gains tax.
See – it does have an ironically funny side to it, if you are some sort of sick person with a warped sense of humour ]

@Yvette: what we have are student politicians who are seeking to punish “boomers” for all the perceived injustices they have suffered. A wide-ranging CGT is their prescription for achieving “inter-generational fairness”. They seem to be unaware that the most likely victims will be Gen – Xers and others who are still trying to accumulate a modest amount of “wealth” to provide for security in their later years. It’s a massive own-goal.

What ScoMo should have said to Jacinda
‘Thank you Prime Minister Ardern for those blunt comments just now in which you publicly indicated that deporting Kiwis from Australia is to your way of thinking ‘corrosive’ to the trans-Tasman relationship. I hadn’t realised this joint press conference was going to be used to make public criticisms of each country’s government’s policies. So let me reply in kind, bluntly and in public, and then perhaps I can air a few matters of New Zealand government policy that I think might also be ‘corrosive’ to our countries’ relationship.

‘On the deportation issue, people on visas who break any serious law will be deported, full stop. If they have under-age children then they will be sent back with their parents. That is our policy. We make no apology for it. Nor should we. You obviously disagree on that point, Ms Ardern, but my government thinks you are wrong. Who knows? If Mr Shorten wins our upcoming election you may get your wish granted.

‘And as you have thought it proper to indulge in the game of publicly denouncing the other country’s government policies, here are a few of New Zealand’s that I think are ‘corrosive’. You Kiwis are complete and total free-riders as far as defence is concerned. You take advantage of Australia and the US because you know that we will come to your aid even though you spend vanishingly little on defence. Worse, your country’s long-standing virtue-signalling on US naval ships – banning nuclear-armed US ships, which means all of them because it’s US military policy not to say whether they are nuclear or not – led to New Zealand being thrown out of the security obligations under the Anzus treaty. You first did this during the Cold War in the mid-1980s, undermining the Americans and with a seeming belief that unilateral disarmament is anything other than stupid. I disagree with that Kiwi move. In fact it was precisely that clear American intent to defend the democratic world, by spending heavily on defence, that led to the fall of the Soviet Union. In my government’s view that was a wholly good thing for the world. I realise that you, as a one-time socialist activist, might have a warmer view of Soviet communism. But you’re wrong. And when you first became Prime Minister back at the end of 2017 and called capitalism a ‘blatant failure’, let me just say that I think you were an idiot. Comments like that are very – how did you put it? – ah yes, they’re ‘corrosive’ to the relations between New Zealand and Australia because in Australia we recognise that capitalism has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty in the last few decades alone. Just look at China and India. Socialism, by contrast, has taken the once-wealthy Venezuela and turned it into an impoverished basket case. Frankly, on matters economic you are clueless, Ms Ardern.

‘I might also take this opportunity, given that you have decided that these diplomatic meetings are in fact an opportunity for you to show off for your home audience back in New Zealand, to make it clear that your public intervention into how we police our borders – I refer to your government’s offer to take a few hundred of those claiming to be refugees from Australia’s offshore detention centres – is making it harder for us to keep our borders secure. If you want to bumper-sticker moralise, do it about something else. Incentives matter and you are weakening the ones that we have put in place to stop the boats. This has resulted in the boats stopping completely, along with the hundreds and hundreds who died coming on those boats.

‘Perhaps a blunter way to make this point is to say that you and your government across the Tasman are not morally superior to me and mine. Indeed, you are classic free-riders whose geography has allowed you to avoid hard decisions. Fine. Lucky you. But have the good graces to shut up about it, at least in public, because Australia is differently situated. If we want your advice we’ll ask for it.

‘Which brings me to how it is that you are even in the position of being New Zealand’s Prime Minister and hence able to stand up here today and sanctimoniously posture and virtue-signal. Of course normally I wouldn’t comment on another country’s domestic affairs, certainly not a democratic one with which we have shared a long and friendly history. But as you have changed the rules of the game, I will play by the new ones. Because let’s be honest: in any sane voting system you wouldn’t be prime minister would you? Your main opponents the National party at the last election in 2017 garnered 44.5 per cent of the vote and your Labour party won 37 per cent. Even with the Green party votes thrown in you did worse. You’re only PM because an embittered former National party politician who set up the New Zealand First party – my fellow Australians can think in terms of Clive Palmer at this point – well, he opted to put you and the Left in power despite it being clear most of his party’s voters were much more conservatively inclined. I suppose we’ll see how that pans out for New Zealand First, or whatever it’s called, at the next election. But basically it required one of the world’s most virulently proportional voting systems to make you PM, a voting system the Americans imposed on Germany after World War II and one in which about half of MPs get into the New Zealand parliament simply because their own party has put them high up on some list drawn up by party insiders. You can even lose at the constituency level and still get a seat because you are good buddies with the insider class of your own party. Frankly, I think that’s ‘corrosive’ of democracy. But of course that’s something for Kiwis to decide and not for me to raise – well, that was what I took the conventions to be before you opted to use this joint press conference to air your views on what you think is and isn’t ‘corrosive’. Now you’ve heard what I think, maybe we can turn to questions from the press?’

This is scary. Pharmacies are removing common cough medicines from the shelf.

On Monday 25 February the Health Ministry gazetted a reclassification of some commonly used cough mixtures and medicines.

Cough suppressant dextromethorphan, or DXM, is now a prescription medicine, and also restricted, meaning it has to be obtained from a pharmacist rather than off a shelf.

Opium tincture and squill oxymel, also need a prescription. These changes took effect at the moment of gazetting, on Monday.

Pharmacy Today said in an article yesterday that brands affected in the commonly used medicines were Gee’s Linctus, Benadryl, Codral, Coldrex, Dimetapp, Panadol Cold & Flu Relief, Robitussin, Strepsils, Vicks and Your Pharmacy.

So you need a prescription for Vicks, Strepsils, and Gees Linctus now? Are they kidding? My parents, and now myself, have been getting Gees Linctus off the shelf since I can remember. With winter coming on, just imagine the flood of people going to the doctor this is going to cause?

  A while back when I had a terrible cough which kept we awake for quite a few nights, tried a few different types of syrups but they had practically no effect on my cough.
  
  I spent quite a bit of time looking for some sort of relief, what surprised me is what I read on a few medical sites that OTC cough syrup is pretty much a placebo with no proven benefit.

  Not necessarily – I’m guessing it just means that it is kept “behind the counter” as it were, and you must talk to a pharmacist before you can purchase it. That’s already the case, I think, with some medications now, especially ones that if bought in sufficient bulk can be refined for illicit drugs.

  It’s been the case for some time that the ones with effective ingredients are prescription only. If I had known that when I came back to NZ in 2011 I would have stocked up on my favourite “Night Nurse” and “Day Nurse”, available off the shelf from Boots and really effective at drying up your nose and helping you get through the day/night. Anyone know the regulations on carrying them in as a passenger? My brother is coming over soon and I might get him to pop a couple of packs in his bags. Is it allowed for ‘own use’?

A lot of you will remeber that last month i gave my verdict on the best Supermarket Hot X Buns -with Countdown ones being the winner. Well heres something else i can share you will all luv. Deep fried Hot X Buns with rasberry jam,cream and a dusting of icing sugar. Use frozen bums and deep-fry in vege oil for about 2 mins. Let them cool and cut a slit in them. Fill with cream and a little jam then dust with the icing sugar. Make the cream by lightly beating cold milk, plain instant pudding nix and a few drops of vanilla. They are sooo delish and run rings around any donut you ever had! We bought one of those little zip deep fryers from briscoes last month and itwork great – best $90 we ever spend. ENJOY!

  Made thousands of donuts and Hot cross buns. Take the hotcross bun when its proved up and drop them in the donut vat.
  No need for the raspberry as the bun has enough fruit. good spice though is a must and lemon essence.
  Better cooked in a saturated fat like Chefade. Reason being that chefade has a higher boiling point than any of the oils.so seals of the bun/donut without soaking it in oil.
  
  Cream and Icing sugar to finish them off.

    That’s what is bothering me, important news is hidden,heavily slanted opinion pieces, banality and low IQ dross is front and center.
    
    The fact that this style of news presentation/social manipulation is now across all our media outlets does leave me concerned about the future of NZ.
    
    The media is intentionally trying to dumb people down, for what reason I’m not 100% sure.

So I was doing a wee bit of online reading about wasps/bees and came across this:

Wasps and bees also differ in lifestyle and habits. Honey bee colonies can have populations over 75,000, while wasps’ colonies tend to have fewer than 10,000 individuals. Queen wasps build a nest for their colony, while worker honey bees create and maintain hives. Wasp species cannot produce honey, but all species of honey bees are capable of producing and storing sizeable amounts of honey within their hives. While honey bees can sting only once and die after attacking, a single wasp is capable of stinging multiple times.

And I thought: no wonder I want the bloody wasps out of my garden. As far as I can see, they bring no benefit to it.

  *Wasps are such nasty bastards* as well, particularly if they think their nest is under attack. We had a huge swarm of the buggers around the base of an old palm tree at the end of the pool. It got to the stage where it even became dangerous to go for a swim.
  
  One of the guys from the gun-club came up with the remedy, wait until late at night and sneak up on the nest with a container of diesel and a petrol soaked rag. Pour the diesel into the nest, set fire to the rag, throw it on, then run like hell.
  
  Worked a treat, only downside was I had to replace the palm tree so wasn’t a cheap fix.

  Evil things. We have some wasp killer that comes in a spray can and can spray up to 4m, so can get to the wasps under the eaves. Spray the nest at night and it is sudden death on the wasps and any larvae. I can ask the other half where it comes from. I know it is not cheap, but it works well.
  We have beehives locally and I love the sight of bees in the garden, but I will stalk and kill wasps.

  The chemistry of Lithium Ion batteries is such that if they are punctured they heat to a little over 500 deg C 2 seconds.
  
  Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries heat to less than 100 degC but are twice the size for the same energy, also very difficult to overcharge or generally abuse, only way they could get it to overheat was by punchering a cell with a nail gun.
  LiOn batteries (or similar) are used in Tesla’s, not LiFePO4.

Can you all please stop beating up on us SAFA’s as a collective group. While I we have our share of reprobates, by far the majority of us are hard working and make a significant contribution to NZ.

I arrived here 13 years ago, with my wife and 4 kids, all of school going age. We had a container of our goods and chattels but minimal capital, and what capital we did have we had to use to supplement our income for a few years.

We have never needed welfare, been on the DOL, or used WFF. All my kids are financially independent now, earning good incomes and making a contribution to NZ as: 2 x teachers, 1 x builder, and a special effects artist who has now gone back to uni (and not fees free either). I was a volunteer instructor in one of NZ’s top youth organisations for 8 years, and have a positive impact on a lot of young people over that time. I’m probably in the top 5% in my specialty in NZ, and earn enough that my wife doesn’t need to take someone else’s job 😉 although I’d not call us rich.

After 6 years, starting with no savings, we were able to buy a section with 2 houses on it, one of which we let out to family, friends or other (good) SAFAs arriving in NZ and need short term accommodation.

Sorry, but it P!$$3$ me off when I get thrown in with (yesterday’s GD) comments about SAFAs being useless bludgers. The few that cause problems here would probably have been a problem back in SA, and rightly deserve to be sent home. Most of us are actually really nice, hard working people who have embraced NZ and call this home. We were never a “privileged class” and most of the propaganda cr@p you ever heard about white Safa’s is just that, cr@p. Except for a very small group that I would have called “trash” back in SA, most of us worked hard for our living, paid massive taxes and got little for it.

Yes, I support the All Blacks and the Black Caps, and anyone playing against Australia.

Post Primary Teachers set for national strike in April. They want 15% increase AND housing subsidy for those living in high cost centers.

Since coming to NZ, I don’t think I’ve ever got more than 2%-4% increase in any year, and went 5 years without an increase. While a lot of people may believe they are worth 15% more, who the hell actually expects to get an increase like that.

It’s common for Maori to call for more Maori-friendly practices in our health system. Now we have south-city Aucklanders calling for incorporation of Polynesian approaches.
Here’s one that’s, well, bloody terrifying.

It’s trephination, or trepanation, or trepanning. This boring holes in the skulls of living people. It was practised in many ancient cultures, but had been generally abandoned in the West by the early Middle Ages.

However, it lingered on in corners of the world including Africa, Melanesia, and Polynesia until about a hundred years ago.

An example from a skull found at Waipu, New Zealand, has been disputed as not being an example of trephination, but another trepanned skull has been found in Niue, which is part of New Zealand.

What was it about? The consensus seems to be that it was probably about treating illness. One explanation from islanders is that trepanning in some cases also entailed removing a bit of the human brain and replacing it with pig brain. As if we haven’t got enough pig-headed people already.

I’ve had a couple of incidents which I think are corrupt within my council, dodgy procurement , maladministration etc. . But my issue is reporting. The ombudsman will only investigate if it affects you directly and personally. And you have to address it with the council first – which is tricky if you work for or with them. The Aussie Independent commission against corruption actually has an anonymous tip line and encourages people to report bad practice and corruption. IN NZ the SFO only investigates Serious fraud and corruption. But what about garden variety corruption.

  If I understand you correctly, the issue does not affect you directly, but you feel you cannot raise it with council officers or councillors because you are a council employee or contractor.
  You could perhaps check whether your council has a protected disclosures policy, and whether your issue can be raised through that. You could also consider raising the matter with an individual councillor, if you know, or know of, a councillor unconnected with the matter you are concerned about. An additional resources could be your local MP. Most consistency MPs are actually genuinely helpful with problems and usually have very good connections to get things done (mileage may vary).

        From memory he resides in Kelburn but until recently he could claim a connection with the Wairarapa through ownership of the Matahiwi Winery a few kilometres north of Masterton.
        
        However even that has likely changed.

At the last completed census, in 2013, 74 per cent of New Zealanders identified as “European”. The multiculturists and immigration rorters will have reduced that somewhat in the last six years, but by not as much as some think.

Regardless, engineering company Tonkin and Taylor is reported at Red Radio as saying it is disappointed that 74 per cent of its new engineering graduates are white males!

It says it’s struggling to hire Maori and Pacific graduates to hire. This suggests it would like to apply some reverse discrimination.

After the collapse of the CTV building on apparently lax engineering, we can say to hell with that approach. Just give us the best engineers.
