  Minister Twford’s light rail preference could be implemented with drive on car transport. A fell engine could help on the steeper inclines. Nothing is impossible and SJ has a large enough development fund to contribute.

    Perhaps they can put a cable car on the hill to Grenada. Get to the top and… All change!
    Or copy the Chunnel idea and have a road train where the car gets loaded on a train for the trip through a tunnel.
    Maybe they can have a séance and contact Robert Holmes, the designer of the Raurimu spiral and see if he has some good ideas!

  Building stuff that hardly anyone wants or will use. You can bike now. You can catch a bus now. But people need to, want to and choose to drive. What they mean by choices is to reduce the practicality of driving a car so that it will be an inferior choice to the others.
  I also think that part of the reason these projects take so long is that it provides the public with an opportunity to forget how much better the road was before the project went ahead! After months or years of driving around cones it’s a relief to get the new narrower road open for business.

  What does Emma Speight mean ? A resident of Grenada North should take a 45 minute bus trip into Wellington, walk to the station, take a 30 minute train ride to Petone, then take a bus from the station to their destination ? So all up around 90 minute journey plus waiting times.

    No. But the new road could have two lanes for cars, one lane for cyclists, and one lane for buses. Just to as an example.
    
    Btw the decision on whether to toll transmission gully is yet to be made. I predict a hefty toll on private cars at peak times to encourage public transport.
    
    I think the idea that TG will result in a flood of private car commuters to Wellington is greatly exaggerated. The main cost barrier to private car commuting to central Wellington is parking availability and costs. That won’t change.

So this is what greets me when i check out Stuff this a.m.: Man wearing a Trump shirt abuses people at Christchurch mosque where more than 40 people died

On reading the story the source is a 17 year old girl who wasn’t there but heard about it from a friend

A post on the Muslims in Christchurch and Canterbury Facebook page said the man was wearing a shirt that said “Trump for New Zealand”. A photo showed the man standing beside two police officers in the Trump shirt.

So if this photo exists why doesn’t the story include it?

And why didn’t the police arrest the man then and there?

Colour me skeptical about this agitprop

      I actually find the Herald not too bad. Balanced on most topics, but with a couple of notable blind-spots.
      
      One, David Fisher’s man-crush on Kim Dotcom renders any article on that topic hopelessly biased. And two, they seem to blindly accept Nicky Hager’s fabrications at face value. Given how often his lies get disproven you’d think they’d have learned by now.

  Andrei – sadly it appears that our mainstream media wants to link every story back to Donald Trump. Without realising it they are crediting him with superhuman powers. He is able to influence everything on earth.
  
  So yes, you are completely right to be sceptical about such claims.
  
  The other side of the coin, and I’m generally not one to go too much for conspiracy theories, is that many of these happenings are actually bogus events staged by the anti-Trump left. The most egregious couple of examples off the top my head would be:
  
  – the fights that occurred at Trump rallies that were generally instigated by leftist agitators who were paid to start trouble
  
  – The whole Russian collusion investigation of the last two years started with a phony dossier that was bought and paid for by the Clintons and involved them colluding with the Russians!
  
  – It is also quite possible that the meeting with the Russian lawyer and Donald Trump junior was set up by the Democrats to bolster the phony claim of collusion?
  
  Oh for a media outlet with actual investigative journalists they could find the truth on these matters!?

  Is that some kind of dig at Parkinson’s, the shaking thing ? Most (but not all) Parkinson’s sufferers have uncontrolled shaking problems, reduced but often not entirely eliminated by drugs. A smaller group has the opposite problem – difficulty initiating actions.

      Maybe inadvertent or in jest, but sadly Parkinson’s is not something I would want to make fun of, having had a couple of sufferers in the family tree.
      
      But perhaps it is OK if the target is an acceptable one, like Mitch McConnell being made fun of because he has trouble standing up and walking sometimes. He has post-Polio syndrome, a legacy of a bout of poliomyelitis as a child. Not something I would want to make fun of myself but it’s different for the left apparently.

        As recently as the mid-1980’s there were 350,000 new cases of polio every year. Last year there were 33, almost all of which were in border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan; areas controlled by the Taliban.
        
        The combined efforts of the WHO, Gates Foundation and Rotary International has almost completely eradicated polio. As a Rotarian, I am immensely proud of that, but we won’t give up until the job is done.

According to Stats NZ’s interim calculations, roughly 10 per cent of New Zealanders didn’t properly fill out their Census forms
MacPherson said 460,000 people did not complete the Census and roughly 240,000 people only partially completed it.

If 700,000 who screwed up are 10%, the population of New Zealand would be 7 million, but it is in fact about 4.75 million – so is Stats NZ really in more trouble than we already know?

Also – “… affecting electorate numbers and boundaries for Election 2020”, will any loser of the next Election be able to legally appeal the result for boundaries being determined with insufficient statistics to be accurate? What is actually required by law to hold a valid Election, given laws also control the term of any Government.
Don’t they?

Have not the Greenies heard of oil-miles? Surely a South Island oil/ natural gas find would be great so that some of the coal burning customers such as Fonterra at Clandboye can convert to gas.
No more ads of a smiling janitor at King’s High Dunedin shovelling coal into his boiler to keep the boys warm.

  A big oil find in the South Island would be great. A big gas find might be really problematic. There might not be enough customers of scale in Otago and Canterbury to make gas reticulation from an offshore field economic.
  
  Look at the costs of developing West Australian fields and they were massive fields, yet the WA govt has had to force the developers to sell to domestic customers, and they already had a gas network in place. Imagine the cost and nimbyism and taniwhas to be negotiated putting in gas lines across the South Island. The better commercial option might be FLNG with offshore platforms putting gas straight into export ships.

        Whether Folau’s beliefs are right or not, I didn’t know just putting a call out there for people to turn away from terrible things and pursue that which is good is fanatical.
        
        Is he forcing his beliefs down other peoples throats? No.
        Is he forcing his beliefs on anyone? No.
        He isn’t even forcing anyone to listen to him or care what he has to say at all.
        
        Also, I’m sure absolutely everyone has at least one uncompromising ideal. I guess everyone is a zealot, which makes being called a zealot pretty meaningless if that’s the case.

Imagine if you will, an alternative universe, in which National had secured power after the last election. Now imagine that Simon Bridges had chaired a committee in 2018 to slacken the rules about obtaining firearms.

Now imagine the renting garments and self-righteous vindictiveness of the press.

Imagine Labour and The Greens and NZ First, in opposition – claws out – capitalising on it.

Imagine The Standard in full pitchfork and torches mode. Imagine the sock-puppets comments here on KB dog-whistling ‘white supremacist’ jibes at every Tom Dick or Harriet.

Imagine the calibre of and tone of the journalism and editorials we would witness.

Fast forward.

Now, you are back in our actual universe.

Compare and contrast that with with how the press responded to just such a situation, to lionise and beatify the very person who was instrumental in making it easier obtain these firearms licences, but now claims she ‘couldn’t fathom’ how it happened.

What was she doing on that committee – her nails?

  You have to do a bit of digging to find out how Ardern loosened Gun Laws last Dec.
  
  ‘Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern oversaw recent changes which meant gun licence holders did not need to visit police stations when applying for permits for assault rifles, but could instead apply online.
  Previously under the Arms Act, if someone wanted to become a gun dealer, get a firearms licence, import a restricted weapon, or get a permit to buy a MSSA [military style semi-automatic], they had to physically deliver an application to their nearest police station.
  For example, if someone with an E-category endorsement was buying an MSSA, they would have to visit their police station for a permit, show the permit to the seller, and then take the weapon back to police.
  Under the changes, which came in just before Christmas, that process could be done online, and the firearm shown by video call. Police could ask to see the weapon in person if they were not satisfied they had identified it.’
  
  This removed another opportunity for the Police to meet the buyer and vet them.
  
  “The accused gunman got his New Zealand firearms licence in November, 2017 and began buying weapons soon after, including online from Gun City in Christchurch.”
  “Ardern was the chair of an executive committee which ushered through changes to arms regulations.’
  
  Oh dear…
  Then there’s the reduction in Arms Officers she oversaw
  
  ‘Police arms officers were told in January they would be restructured, with 76 district-based positions disestablished and 280 casual vetting staff positions cut entirely.
  They would be replaced by 36 field-based positions and 47 centralised positions at a facility in Kapiti’

Report on RNZ Morning Report about liberal left “security experts” Paul Buchanan and Professor Robert Packman (Otago) eating themselves up because the terrorist international watch list (published on 22nd March) had no white supremacist groups on it.

For 5 minutes RNZ gave this pair a platform to rant about their favourite topic and provide no evidence in support.

The basis of their opinions are Trump is the cause and therefore the US are turning a blind eye – but we are saved because Canada’s foreign minister spoke to the UN Security Council about the topic; and
White Supremacy has been on the rise since the GFC.

What a pile of Male bovine excrement. Please when is somebody going to tell these white liberal “white supremacists under the bed” idiots to STFU and get lost. These people are adding nothing to debate except to say we need more big state laws to control those we do not like.

  The day after the Christchurch attacks they interviewed Paul Buchanan and he was saying that the other people who were originally arrested(but later released) were support for Tarrant and this is the reason he choose Christchurch because it was a hotbed for white supremacy and sympathetic people were available.
  Turned out to be a load of rubbish as Tarrant acted alone but I noticed the media never went back to him to Buchanan and asked him why he was spouting crap when he was supposed to be an expert.

Surely whilst Ardern is on a huge high internationally, and with the local media, it is time to suggest that following her meeting with a senior UN woman last week, that she takes the opportunity to consider joining the UN whilst she is at the top of her personal game.
She is just what the UN would champion – she is a woman, she has a baby, and she can wear a headscarf. Most of the UN countries are Moslem so she would show empathy with them.
The longer she remains on our high the sooner the fall will come – and it will despite the huge amount of money spent on her personal PR.

Went along to a Forest and Bird event in Wellington last night. Kevin Hague spoke. Much of what he said was persuasive and he’s clearly very well informed, but he undermined his case for this audience member with some glaring blind spots.

Obviously, but not supported by any actual facts, National bad, this Government the best ever.

He was lyrical about Maori dedication to sustainability but bemoaned the fishing industry, ignoring both that it is largely run by those same sustainability-loving Maori and that the previous Government’s plans to enforce fishing regulation have been held up under this one.

In questions nobody spoke up for National or questioned the environmental credentials of this Government – I didn’t get a chance to ask what are F&B’s thoughts on the ban on using or even researching GM for pest control – but massive respect to the lady who challenged what she called the myth of Maori superiority in environmental management. She pointed out that of the extinct bird species, half were already gone by the time Europeans got here.

The local F&B said that the iwi reps he worked with were all passionately committed, no reason to doubt that but he didn’t seem to have given any thought to whether those particular individuals were any more representative of that community than last night’s audience was of the public in general. As far as I could see there were two ethnic Asians and the rest were all pakeha.

Still looking, then, for ways to increase my involvement in and contribution to NZ conservation in ways that actually will help NZ conservation.

    A good answer is:

    It isn’t the consumption of alcohol/wine that is the issue. The Bible often commends wine to ‘gladden the heart’ – and/or for digestion.
    
    It’s the most usually resulting loss of conscience and control of behaviour as a consequence of drunkeness that is the problem – hence sexual immorality, debauchery, jealousy, dissension, and sometimes loss of memory of or adherence to soberly made commitments.
    
    Jesus put it all in a nutshell when He said:
    
    “There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.”
    
    Or an alternative translation:
    
    “It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart.’

    As a further note, Christ died on the Cross to pay for ALL the sins of his disciples, forever. Including drunkeness, one assumes. God judges the heart – all human beings are equally sinful in behaviour in the sight of God, all the time.
    
    The only thing leading to ‘damnation’ is refusal to accept His sacrifice and being consciously committed to corruption – and denying the Holy Spirit, which is probably in essence the same thing.

Had she read it, and if officially questioned on that, and admitted she had, would she then be guilty of a crime requiring her to stand down as Prime Minister and indeed leave Parliament?

ln similar vein, have either Marama Davidson or Golriz Ghahraman “criminalised” themselves by reading the Christchurch shooters manifesto, or have some of their statements relating to “Islamophobia” and “colonisation” been unfounded in fact, and indeed their own agendas, rather the mass murder’s intention at all?

Like – “New Zealand was founded on the theft of land, language and identity of indigenous people. This land we are standing on is land we were violently removed from to uphold the same agenda that killed the people in the Mosques yesterday.” [3]

Anyone else notice that in all the articles about how Anzac day services have been cancelled due to heightened security threats, not one mentioned that the threat was from Islamist reprisals, effectively implying (by omission) that it was related to lone-wolf Tarrent-types.

Runs rather counter to the narrative about hard right nut jobs being a genuine threat to public safety. Security forces in the country obviously believe otherwise.

      I know a number of ex homosexuals who have come out of the gay life style of their own choice, with no coercion, some of these with very public views (look up Joe Dallas as an example). The European socialists are after still more control over sovereign nations.

Though power has steadily flowed from national capitals to Brussels over the past two decades in the European Union, there have been key areas which the EU can’t touch according to its treaties. These include diplomacy, defence, education, healthcare, energy and taxation.

Today, the European Commission risked crossing these red lines by proposing more EU control over the latter two areas.

Of course control over taxation and energy provides de-facto control over education and healthcare, a tidy little move.

Also note the intention to remove requirements for unanimity of voting on ‘important’ matters, so that smaller, more unruly countries can be forced into line.

It looks like PM May is wrecking the Conservative Party, big time. Well past time for her to be pushed aside in any way possible . I realise the Party rules say a new challenge cannot occur within 12 months of the last one but something has to be done.

The fine print of the extension until October that the EU have just agreed to says May’s Withdrawal Agreement cannot be modified –the one that has been voted on 3 times and voted down 3 times.
So we see the usual EU games at work again –keep voting until you get the answer you want.

  On the other hand, May is the only one putting up options and fronting the EU reps. The remaining conservatives simply bitch and moan and bicker among themselves. We even had one self-serving Tory say he would happily agree to May’s proposal if she resigned afterwards.
  
  She may well have had a charisma by-pass but at least she seems to be after the best deal for UK, not just for herself.

Newstalk ZB reports new poll. Greens and NZ First bite the dust. Nats holding steady which is extraordinary given the huge amount of international and national coverage and pr the prime minister has had over the recent tragedy. They didn’t report how many people are undecided or ACT’s vote. Act’s actually been strong lately with the Euthanasia bill and being the only minor party acting to hold the govt to account and providing an alternative opinion. I’d be interested in whether they picked up a few votes.

It shows you how much evidence or proof JRL has on Simon Bridges after his accusation in a select committee on spying today. After leaving the meeting a today he was asked to repeat the allegations and refused as he didn’t have Parliamentry Privilege, so this germ can make statements for without ounce of evidence and the media will crucify a Leader without absolute proof.

Oh great, Tova and Jamie-Lee are trying to do another hit job on National. Now it’s about Chinese influence on the party…As I said months ago, this boil needs lanced, Ross will be a noose around Nationals neck at election time, if they allow this to continue. You just know he will be planning to spoil Bridges and Nationals campaign.

There’s been a bit of hoo-ha in the Far North recently over manuka honey, specifically the manuka bit.

Apparently the local manuka sub-species doesn’t show up a particular ID marker which means that much of Northland’s production is downgraded to the point that it’s not worth producing.

My query is whether the marker doesn’t show up because of the plant make-up or the environment?

I’m pretty sure we don’t know the answer to that….

To differentiate between genetics/environment, you’d need to do reciprocal transplants of the Northland Manuka races/varieties and the High UF Manuka…. and wait until honey is produced from each….

However… The problem seems to be the MPI have come up with criteria that differentiates monofloral manuka honey from multifloral manuka and it revolves around having a very high level of one chemical (3-Phenyllactic acid
at a level greater than or equal to 400 mg/kg )

anything between 20-400 mg/kg gets downgraded to multifloral… and doesn’t command such a high price.

The folks up north are pretty confident that their bees are harvesting manuka only (& not a lot of other flower species).
I would think it’s very likely that the chemical signature of manuka nectar varies throughout NZ (so many other variables of manuka…leaf size, leaf shape, flower colour, etc vary).
I’d support MPI lowering the Phenyllacetic criteria

(I have a particular interest in this as my immediate neighbour is one of the Murray whanau…who run the Kai Ora Honey business in Northland).

  There may be more money in Essential oils extracted from Manuka than from honey production…Botanists are well aware of chemical races in manuka….but looks like the rush to plant a Billion trees might bugger up some of the genetic potential of the varieties…
