      I’ve looked through the legislation and can’t see that it’s clear these would not be ok or a complete 22lr upper.
      Though, they have left room to ban anything, any firearm type, part or ammunition, all without another law change, but by just specifying it.
      Looks like the NZ police now totally own the firearm policy.
      How long before firearm owners are forced to pay for a register, are banned from reloading etc.
      Remember, owning a gun is a privilege not a right, just like owning a car or consuming alcohol, maybe even posting on social media or voicing opinion.

  Kiwiblog is still the best blog. The herald article is a shocker, featuring socialist aotearoa and unite union posters in the lead photo, and Peter Dunne calling for a public decency tribunal! What the heck does that involve? Sounds like some sort of crazy dystopian future. Would you just be brought in front of the tribunal for activities that offend the government of the day. In Victorian times that might be for homosexual acts, but today it’s for handing out pamphlets that question separatism, and offend by saying a culture was “stone-age” which portrays a group history inacurately – so if it doesn’t meet the criteria for hate speech, but you’d be bought to the decency tribunal?! It all sounds very subjective. but they still managed to fit into the article that Ardern received world acclaim for her empathy. Free speech is dying and journalism is dead.

        Whether or not your take on the complainant’s motive is correct, I have no opinion, but, to her credit, she has replied to some specific points in the pamphlet (though possibly not the main point) with specific counter claims and got them publicised. This is free speech.
        
        To their great discredit, she, Dunne and Little seem unwilling to let the public decide for themselves on these matters. This is not free speech.
        
        Ps. I guess no one at the Herald has noticed the subject-verb agreement error in the headline; the decline continues.

  Andrew Little want speech he doesn’t agree with labeled as hate speech. In this case Don Brash and his push back against the politics of race which divides this country.
  The Australian rugby union wants to sack Israel Folau for what he wrote on social media.
  It’s a disturbing trend against free speech and in Folau’s case, freedom of religion.
  
  Thinking more about Folau. His Instagram post about fornicators and adulterers and homosexuals was lifted straight out of the bible. To see it you have to follow Falau. If you are offended then you can unfollow Folau.
  
  So he quotes the Bible and he is likely to lose his job. That seems to be a direct attack on religious freedom. Can the homosexual lobby and Andrew Little please let us know what passages of the Bible they find acceptable? Also if we follow Falau or Like his comments are we liable for persecution too?
  
  There is a whole attack on freedom of speech which is very disturbing, whatever your faith and world view.

  I can’t see anything racist or offensive in the pamphlet, the opposite in fact as if Maori claim special privileges based on being part Maori or of a tribe that arrived here first(perhaps) or because they conquered the natives is apartheid and opens up the door to similar claims from other racial groups .

  If you think some of the comments people used to get away with were alright, then I’m sorry for you because before the shooting happen I came here and was disgusted by some of the comments. One I remember were a few members attacking a labour troll, calling them a kiddy feeler, a child abuser. Disgusting behaviour should never be tolerated

    I am a fairly recent member of this blog. I think you may be newer than I.
    
    I saw some of the comments that the “kiddy feeler” had made and to be fair, he needed a brain rearrangement and those responses were harsh but possibly quite accurate based on the posts.
    
    I am a fairly robust fellow and because I neither know the bulk of these posters nor really give a stuff about what they think of me can absorb a fair amount of shit and….can redeliver a fair amount as well.
    
    I for one was accepting of the to and fro and even the rabid insults directed at our politicians.
    
    I think you need to go back to atime well before March 15 and rethink your stance.

    That’ll be the bestial practices of the late Stephieboy you are referring to, I think. I observed those tet-a-tets for a long time before I ever started commenting here, and I recall that Stephieboy was a loathsome individual whose solitary pleasure, and possibly occupation, seemed to consist of coming here to receive abuse. In pursuit of such flagellation he’d make as big a prick of himself as he could, and quickly be rewarded by the less tolerant correspondents. What I’m saying is, there was history and context to a lot of much of that stuff, and while I am not sad to see it gone, it never upset or bothered me. I grew up in old-school workplaces where being called “you old goat-fucker you” was a term of genuine endearment. People these days take everything far too seriously.

  I’m glad you raised Andrew Little’s reported comments on the pamphlet. I find them alarming. If anyone feels the pamphlet is inciting race hatred they are free to lay a complaint under the Human Rights Act 1993, section 61 relating to racial disharmony. Is Andrew Little now the infallible authority on the “correct” view of New Zealand history? The CoL are revealing themselves to be petty totalitarians.     Indeed. “Incitement” of act X is just an excuse to abridge free speech rights. Incitement (by mere words) is a ridiculous concept. The ACTOR is solely responsible for their actions, not comment(s) made by someone or other online, for example.
    It is analogous to the removal of the defence of provocation (re: the Sophie Elliot murder). She could not and should not have been to blame for her killer’s acts, and nor should a poster be responsible for someone who claims they did X based upon those comments. What it needs is to focus more on the now and future and to recognise that Jacinderella is now possibly NZs first real Instagram star, in company with the Kardashians, and so many Internet influencers (remember the Fyre festival team). I really don’t mind the fact that the moderation process takes away the instant gratification of seeing one’s pearls of wisdom appear almost as they are created. It makes it less like the pokies and more like lotto. It also seems to have elevated General Debate towards something resembling a true debate rather than a platform for playground abuse. Like all rights, free speech is subject to reasonable limitations. Ultimately I believe that free speech exercised responsibly is likely to allow future speech to become freer. Free speech exercised irresponsibly will cost us our freedom. Think carefully before you post, and let’s see how it evolves

    In more ways than you imagine. Bother Tories and Labour are internally divided and reading comments in Newspapers online there is a level of hatred of both I never saw 25 years ago when I lived there. The same divisiveness is apparent pan Europe and when the next recession arrives there will be anger against any people perceived as not ethnically British and therefore becoming targets for any social or economic ills or crime. History of the 1930’s and Adolphs rise to power may be repeated hopefully not in the same way but clearly likely as the EU will almost certainly change after Mays elections and become much more right wing and anti Globalist.

  I am wondering if it is the Moderators’ role to proactively place themselves between the poster and the blog as seems now to be the case here as it most decidedly is on WO. I’m not much interested in reading Moderators’ ra ra-ing comments in support of posts with which they approve or publicly waving the naughty stick at those with whom they are feeling a mite tetchy. I am not interested in whether they sleep or have other lives or anything much about them at all. Surely they should be anonymous and just do their job. Or else bugger off.

      Umm, you may have a false perception about what a moderator’s job actually entails:
      
      By definition, a Moderator acts as a filter for comments that are posted on a discussion site (whether physical or electronic), and removes such comments that are likely to cause controversy, do not conform to the prevailing viewpoints held by the forum’s owner/s, or are of a nature likely to cause offence to the population at large.
      
      As such postings are not under any time constraint, and unless the ‘hours of moderation’ are specifically defined, posters on such sites (especially those that are electronic in nature) can indeed reasonably expect that the moderation process is one that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
      
      To do otherwise is to effectively neutralise the posting process and by definition, stifle the transmission of reasoned discourse.
      
      Thought you might like to know; You may be in the wrong job!

        Yes we are – and we’re doing so because we’ve been invited by DPF. Most of us (hopefully) know intuitively the obvious limits that we should observe. We also understand the reasons for DPF introducing active moderation in the wake of the Christchurch terrorism attack. What I didn’t expect though, was that moderators – other than DPF himself on his own blog – would become part of an ongoing ‘conversation’ on the moderation process. I had assumed that the role of volunteer moderators would be to excise (parts of) any KB comments that could leave DPF – as the blog’s publisher – open to charges (for example) of defamation or supporting the terrorist’s actions and / or motives.
        
        I’m all for DPF’s move on moderation in the prevailing circumstances, and good on all you volunteer moderators for offering your help and and precious unpaid time. But perhaps the intended role of a moderator can be performed better with the knife than with the pen.

    A lot of people who claim the right to ‘free speech’ seem to think that they have no obligation to evaluate their comments or to consider what the reader might think of them. They just want to be able to shout the odds regardless and more often come across as plain bigoted and nasty. They lower the quality of the discussion but they have used their ‘right’ to speak freely, so their egos are soothed.

  I disagree. Free speech should be absolute, and is downstream of free thought. Anyone should be able to express any bonkers idea that comes into their head, and have it dissected, shredded and rebutted by good arguments. Too often, if not always, anti-free speech (and therefore anti-free thought) advocates have no good counter-argument for what is being said, therefore they bludgeon everyone into silence, using legislative measures. The ideas don’t go anywhere, but the really odious ones fester away and morph into monsters which manifest in undesirable ways.
  The same reasons we have seperation of church and state apply: if the State decides the ‘right’ ideas (or the ‘right’ religion), then the temptation is to grab the reigns of power and impose a particular set of thoughts (and restrict a different set of thoughts) on everyone else. Not giving the State this power is the only solution.

  Since it is a dog, I have rated it 0-not at all likely.
  Their response is to call me to ask why. I give them feedback, nothing changes.

      Basically – real world experience does not support a connection between minimum wage and jobless levels.         Straight logic is pretty damning: Many people are just not worth the minimum wage, but could be worth much more if they sorted their shit out.
        
        Whenever you pay more for something than it is worth either:
        * You find a way to do without it (ie. automation and online sales etc which are killing low-end jobs)
        * You have to put up prices to compensate.
        
        When prices go up and the value stays the same, that’s inflation.
        
        So now there’s inflation and the minimum wage has to be pushed up again… and so on and so on.

I found this to be life changing! Last night we went for dinner at a friends place. She made the most wondwerful lemon fruit cake to have with our coffee. But the ICING – now that was to dye for. Instead of adding the usual 200gms of softened butter and having to creme everything togethet, try this for taste and simplicity:

into a bowl put 1 tbsp lite olive oil, 3 tbsp lemon juice, 2 cups icing sugar, a tiny pinch of salt, and the grated rind of a lemon. WHISK together and hay presto – the best icing ever. Slather it over the cake with your spatula (you can add a little more icing sugar or lemon juice depending how runny you like it). Ive got one in the oven as we speak

  The authorities were shocked at how video could be live-streamed without them having the chance to control it. They didn’t imagine it would happen, and have since moved to prevent it from occuring again.

  The “stuff” story linked to cmm’s comment above is well worth a read. It’s full of ‘feelz’-type PR language as Ardern and fellow-Ministers endeavour to craft a ‘good news’ story around a so-called ‘accord’ forged within the construction industry.
  
  My simple comprehension problem commences with use of the word “accord” itself, instead of a real or honest word that one would use normally to convey the intended meaning, e.g. a “plan“. It’s all downhill from there. One of my favourite extracts is:
  
  “It commits those working in, and with, the industry to start treating each other differently, so we can replace the current adversarial culture with one based on respect, trust and shared responsibility.”
  
  To me, that sounds suspiciously like old-fashioned competition within the construction industry being ‘ameliorated’ or reduced in some fashion, with the PM’s fulsome encouragement.
  
  How will this “accord” impact on competition law contained within the Commerce Act? Will the Commerce Commission seek to enforce as law the Act’s actual competition clauses, or will those clauses now not be applied quite so stringently to competitors within New Zealand’s construction-sector ?
