    cmm, you are correct about the European gravy train. The poll is familiar territory for the Tories, look at the results in 1994, 2009 and 2014. The Tory problem is they shoot themselves in the foot and hand support to UKIP and other right of centre ant-EU parties. This is because they have never resolved the liberal pro-EU wing within the Tory party.

The alleged San Diego synagogue killer, John Earnest, admits to being inspired by Christchurch shooter Tarrant, who – “… was a catalyst for me personally. He showed me that it could be done. And that it needed to be done.”
He then quotes what he, John Earnest, claims to be “the most powerful words in his [Tarrant’s] entire manifesto”.

But, without actually reading Earnest’s account, I believe Andrew Little if challenged, would not identify what of Tarrant’s writing had crucially turned John Earnest. It is that unpredictably ordinary: just a simple, logical part of an explanation – and not, at that point, ‘hate’.

It indicates, in fact, that if Andrew Little and Ardern and Macron want censorship of any online material, they are facing censoring everything. It almost amounts to eliminating communication, since the audience to be catered for is actually irrational.
Not my opinion, and not – I think – what Little would foresee, but from the evidence that killer John Earnest has written.

  The problem with absolute censoring is that it is never absolute.
  
  The real disturbed people who are motivated to go look for it will still find it and, likely, the places where they find it will feed them even more of the toxic poison they need.
  
  The only people that would be denied access to the information are the “reasonable” people that would not be going nuts anyway.
  
  Like gun control, and any other control, it only applies to the law abiding.

Duncan Garner in full partisan Labour hack mode this morning. Didn’t let Simon Bridges finish a single sentence without interrupting. He was clearly not in the least bit interested in any of the issues, just ways to belittle Simon.
I was disappointing Mark Richardson didn’t tell him to pull his head in.

That said, Winston would have torn him a new one if he had tried even a hint of that shit with him.

  I didn’t hear Garner but I did hear Espiner on Morning Report. He behaved in exactly the same way you describe. Whenever Bridges tried to say something Espiner jumped in and demanded to know when he had last spoken to Collins. Then he demanded to be told exactly what Bridges had said to his Caucus and so on.
  Obviously the orders went out from the Beehive over the weekend on the way that reporters are required to behave.
  What are they trying to cover up that the Government doesn’t want talked about and which therefore requires that Bridges be not allowed to bring up?

    Vintage Espiner. Not exactly the softest interviewer on the planet. He tends to be pretty hard on most of his subjects – from all sides of the spectrum. Morning Report has a lot of listeners, so some people keep tuning in ….
    
    Suzie is sort of a toned down version of the same.
    
    And of course Espiner – unlike Garner – does not peddle opinions about how NZ politics should be.

  How refreshing it was over the past fortnight to have Ryan Bridge and Eric Young conducting polite, objective, well-researched interviews as hosts of AM. Bridge’s interview of Ardern particularly showed how a host can ask penetrating questions without being offensive.
  Garner comes across as a not very bright sycophant of the left and his political bias is making his show unwatchable.

So now with the road toll rising faster than under National, and with the worst road toll in April since 2009, will JAG admit she put her own dogma ahead of the safety of road users admit she doesn’t have a clue what she’s doing, and resign? (I won’t hold my breath waiting).

  I can’t help but guess though that our standard of driving is plummeting . Our culture has changed massively with mobile phones and people really need to start taking driving seriously .
  
  Heavy penalties are required and that’s for gubmint , but individuals need to take responsibility for their shit driving too.

    I have grave doubts about the safety of people movers – especially if they are full of people. They sway around the corners and tend to go too fast along the ‘straights’ and they look very unstable when they go round a curve.

      I find that on the average, the drivers of “people movers” use them to ferry their large and expended families around. Sometimes I can see that the occupants are not wearing seatbelts, but in many cases the tinted windows prevent me from confirming this. They tend to hog the middle lane of the Southern Motorway, driving steadily at 85 km/h in the 100 km/h zones; then 90 km/h in the 80km/h zones.
      I try to keep well away from them.

        The ‘van’ reported by the media looks very much like a Toyota Highlander, which is not a van but an SUV.
        If it is in fact a Highlander it has only 7 seats and had 8 occupants so obviously not everyone was belted in. Also, if it’s a Highlander it is very likely to be a rental.
        The crash happened about 200 metres north of the intersection of Ohakuri Rd. with SH1.
        Any chance that the vehicle turned right out of Ohakuri Rd. and continued on the incorrect side?
        In the absence of any news of the occupants, any chance that they were Chinese tourists?

        Captain, the vehicle with 8 people in it was a Honda Odessey – an odd cross between a people carrier and over grown station wagon. Unlikely to have been a rental.
        
        The report I heard was that the Odessey was heading north and as it went around a bend, it had broken the solid yellow line in the centre of the round and veered into the right hand lane.
        
        Seven of the 8 victims were in the Odessey.
        
        I’m not certain about the other vehicle involved in the unfortunate accident.

        Interestingly, Honda Odesseys are the most popular people-mover in the car park at the local Exclusive Brethren church.
        
        In any event, it is a tragedy for the wider family of those involved, and especially for the nine-year-old who had his entire family wiped out in one fell swoop.

      Are we seeing a pattern here?
      Large sedans or people-movers, packed with large, lovely families. Many of the occupants are unrestrained. The driver shows a lack of understanding of the prevailing road conditions and loses control at high speed as a result.
      
      Is there a correlation between a happy-go-lucky large-family lifestyle and a happy-go-lucky attititude to seatbelts and driving safety?

    I know the roads in Atiamuri. The motorcyclists speed on them (in the dry).
    They are dangerous because of:
    – tar bleed that turns slick and greasy when it rains
    – off-camber corners
    – deceptive decreasing-radius corners
    – trees and power polls on the roadside
    – lastly, there are so few other vehicles and the curves are so sexy that they tempt inexperienced or stupid drivers to really speed (120 km/h+) on them, i.e., it has the feel of a race track
    – however, there are other road users from time to time (even though the road really induces you to believe that you are the only car on it)
    
    Perfectly safe if you drive to the conditions; deadly otherwise

      The other vehicle in which the unfortunate lady was killed was a Kia Sportage.

        No, it’s not an Odyssey but on further analysis it seems to be a Honda Stream.
        So hullkiwi (and Clive Matthew-Wilson) are half right.
        But Matthew-Wilson (and Genter) are totally wrong in advocating for barriers down the middle of two-lane roads instead of proper divided four-lane carriageways.
        Totally impractical and a danger to motorcyclists.

        4-lane divided expressways are great things. Cost is something like $30 million/km. So Auckland -> Whangarei for example would be about $6bn. Looks better when you write it as $6000 million …

    for some reason some of the worst drivers I have seen have this weird notice ont he back of their car “baby onboard”. I would expect those people would be the safer drivers, but without fail they are always the ones screaming past, passing into oncoming traffic. So “freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences” is frequently trotted out these days. But it’s meaningless and unhelpful and could even be dangerous, for example it can quite logically be used to justify violence (yes I burnt his house down, it was a consequence of what he said and after all fosdnmffc) or oppression (yes the authorities punished him for what he said, what did he expect, fosdnmffc).

Similarly, many argue that freedom of speech does not include hate speech, or speech against certain groups, defamation, incitement, dangerous misinformation etc.

But what then does it mean? What does it include? Because I’m starting to fear that the definition of what freedom of speech isn’t, is becoming so broad that there is precious little left for what it is.

  The U.S. definition is a good one. Unprotected speech is anything “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action” and “likely to incite or produce such action”. This would also include incitement to suicide.
  
  The key words being ‘likely’, ‘lawless’ and ‘imminent’.
  
  Of course there are other specific situations such as disclosure of legally protected information, or obscenity (which should be limited to images not words alone) .

    I would add that freedom of speech only restricts what may be punished by the government. There can be plenty of other consequences. If your employer sacks you (Folau) or you miss out on a contract (Destiny) because you talked about your religious views, your freedom of speech has not been infringed. The issue in those cases is religious discrimination which is prohibited by the Human Rights Act.

    How are all these proposed laws going to give a pass to the Quran then? It is at least as nasty as Tarrant’s manifesto with all it’s exhortations to bigotry and violence against infidels, women, gays etc. Much of Old Testament and Talmud is awful too.

Am I the only person that sees Harry and Meghan moving to Africa as dumb thing?

It is fine for royalty to jet in, tell everyone they’re doing a fantastic job, then jet off home again. That way they get to spread the good feelz and raise awareness.

But moving and living in Africa is another matter. It’s a security disaster. The Somali pirates and other warlords would love to get a royal as a hostage. Heck even NGO workers are a prime target. This would just heighten the security situation.

That basically means it becomes dangerous to embed them in any practical fieldwork. Before they go build a water tank or a new school building, the security people need to scope the place out, guard the convoy etc etc. It would have been more efficient to just get the security squaddies to do the work instead.

They don’t bring any particular skills and will thus be pushing a skilled person out of a critical role. Having them permanently assigned to some office position endangers everyone in the office. Just a trip to Starbucks will need security planning.

Then of course almost all NGOs need to be involved in bribery etc to get anything done. If you don’t bribe the warlords your aid trucks don’t go through. Having royalty embroiled in bribery gets messy for PR.

Nope, I know they want to feel like they’re doing something nice for the world, but in this case costs and negative impact are just too large.

They just need to understand that their lifestyle denies them some choices available to the rest of us.

  I know Arthur Taylor is no longer in prison, but there must be more like him.
  
  It will be ruled as cruel and unusual punishment for prisoners to be denied slushies when they know the screws are getting refreshing beverages.
  
  Prisoners would have to get them too.
  
  That’s the only thing that explains the need for 200 industrial slushie machines.
  
  A commercial slushy machine can make about 60 large servings an hour (500ml). 200 machines give them the ability to make 12000 servings an hour.
  
  There are only about 2000 front-line staff on duty at any time, so they will have capacity to provide 6 servings per hour (3 litres of slushy per corrections officer per hour).
  
  Does that sound realistic?
  
  If, however, they are serving both the inmates and the staff (12000 in total)0 then it comes out to be a more manageable one 500ml slushy per hour.

    cmm, too much maths there for Kelvin of the witless protection programme fame. So that Kelvin can understand, please can you put it in simple terms like.
    
    1. This is a good waste of taxpayers money on people who have been locked away from society;
    2. Slushies are a public health menace and with all the added teaspoons of sugar in the slushie syrup, the outcome will be obesity amongst prisoners and prison officers (so much for the do gooders fighting obesity); and
    3. Did he think about the message he was sending to other public sector workers – what about policemen walking the beat etc – surely they are entitled to a slushie while on duty?
    
    Kelvin clearly didn’t do enough thinking here, thinking only of Corrections staff and the prisoners.

      Mr Davis inferred when interviewed on the news last night that it was the National Govt’s fault that the prison employees had to have slushies.The Nat govt having outsourced the prison management to Serco resulting in the air conditioning not working efficiently in some buildings.

Had a few beers with my Uncle over the weekend. He’s a decorated *Vietnam War vet* and was telling me he attended a small Anzac Day ceremony at St Heliers. Refuses to attend any gathering where Phil Goff is present. After all this time he still holds people like Goff and Helen Clarke in absolute contempt for the disrespect they exhibited towards the returning soldiers in 1971. Last night he emailed me an excerpt from an article [published 2008] which goes someway to explaining why he still feels like he does…..

‘….they were front and center on the 12th May 1971 when 161 Bty RNZA marched down Queen Street after returning from Vietnam. They physically disrupted that parade by throwing red paint at the members of 161 Bty, throwing themselves in front of moving vehicles, screaming “baby killers”, setting fire to prams and pushing them into the parade. They were lucky that our troops had more discipline than long haired communist louts like Goff and Clark at the time’

  Not sure about this council but usually councils only charge income related rent if they want to. Unlike state and social housing where the taxpayer picks up the tab. The general idea is that council supplied housing has to wash its face rather than be subsidised by ratepayers. Common for rents to be less than market rates though.
  
  These council tenants can apply for the Accommodation Supplement, whereas state / social housing tenants can’t.

  It appears that Iran has got worse in its human rights abuses.
  
  Two good things I see – the Americans are continuing to crack down on Iran and the sanctions are biting. This means that the government is becoming more unpopular at home as people are struggling to put food on the table.
  
  You won’t hear this reported in the media but many Iranians particularly the young are utterly sick of the government and the Imams who repress them. There is a growing underground church in Iran which gives the young people hope of a better life and more freedom.
  
  We continue to pray for Iran and the hope that they will throw off their repressive ideology and look for something better.

My partners sister works in London and has become an ardent Royal-Watcher since shes been living there. She was saying that the ‘arrival’ of Baby Sussex will be announced within the next 10 days and be a very carefuly stage managed event. She reckons the real thing to watch out for is when Hazza and Megs move to Africa there will be an announcement that they have also decided to adopt a beautigul little colored baby boy as their own. Their new bub will be 7th in line to the thone.

  I watched a doco yesterday about possible conspiracy theories regarding princess Diana’s death.
  One theory was that the Royal Family had her and Dodi assassinated to avoid having her marry a muslim, which would have been unsupportable for the Royals.
  It occurred to me that Harry, having married a divorced, coloured American actress is, in his own way, giving the Royal Family the finger , as some sort of payback.

Rent increases are much lower in Auckland and Canterbury than they are in other parts of the country, according to interest.co.nz’s latest analysis of bond data.

Across the entire country the average rent charged for new tenancies was $437 a week in the first quarter of this year, up 4.9% compared to the same period of last year.

But there were big regional variations. The biggest rate of increase occurred in Upper Hutt where the average rent increased from $369 a week in the first quarter of last year, to $412 in the first quarter of this year, an 11.6% rise.

The area with the lowest increase was Timaru. There the average rent was $319 a week in the first quarter of this year, down 0.2% (just a few cents) compared to a year earlier. Upper Hutt was also the only area in the country where there was a significant number of new lettings, recording a double digit percentage increase in average rent.

Of the main centres, the areas with the lowest percentage increases compared to a year ago were Auckland (+2.8%) and Canterbury (+1.5%). The main centres with the highest increases were the Wellington region on +6.4% and Dunedin on +6.9%. … read more via hyperlink above …

  Hugh that is pretty old data. Some will be up to 4 months old (quarterly data plus time allowed to lodge a new bond plus bonds lodged late). And it is average data, whereas many consider median a better view.
  
  Trademe’s monthly rental analysis provides a more up to date view – rentals advertised on their site that were rented during the previous month. And median rather than average.

To the surprise of no one, the real collusion in the 2016 U.S election leads back to the Obama White House, who conspired with the Ukraine to reopen a case (that was closed in 2014) against Paul Manafort.

The January 2016 gathering, confirmed by multiple participants and contemporaneous memos, brought some of Ukraine’s top corruption prosecutors and investigators face to face with members of former President Obama’s National Security Council (NSC), FBI, State Department and Department of Justice (DOJ).

The agenda suggested the purpose was training and coordination. But Ukrainian participants said it didn’t take long — during the meetings and afterward — to realize the Americans’ objectives included two politically hot investigations: one that touched Vice President Joe Biden’s family and one that involved a lobbying firm linked closely to then-candidate Trump.

That makes the January 2016 meeting one of the earliest documented efforts to build the now-debunked Trump-Russia collusion narrative and one of the first to involve the Obama administration’s intervention.

Kostiantyn Kulyk, deputy head of the Ukraine prosecutor general’s international affairs office, said that, shortly after Ukrainian authorities returned from the Washington meeting, there was a clear message about helping the Americans with the Party of the Regions case.

“Yes, there was a lot of talking about needing help and then the ledger just appeared in public,” he recalled.

Kulyk said Ukrainian authorities had evidence that other Western figures, such as former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig, also received money from Yanukovych’s party. But the Americans weren’t interested: “They just discussed Manafort. This was all and only what they wanted. Nobody else.”

What follows is info about a “black ledger” that was released to the media, which was supposed to be.

A Ukrainian court in December concluded NABU’s release of the ledger was an illegal attempt to influence the U.S. election. And a member of Ukraine’s parliament has released a recording of a NABU official saying the agency released the ledger to help Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Oh, and they also managed to get Joe Biden’s son off the hook for dirty dealings, with Joe’s help. And people want this guy for president???

The other case raised at the January 2016 meeting, Telizhenko said, involved Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy company under investigation in Ukraine for improper foreign transfers of money. At the time, Burisma allegedly was paying then-Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter as both a board member and a consultant. More than $3 million flowed from Ukraine to an American firm tied to Hunter Biden in 2014-15, bank records show.

According to Telizhenko, U.S. officials told the Ukrainians they would prefer that Kiev drop the Burisma probe and allow the FBI to take it over. The Ukrainians did not agree. But then Joe Biden pressured Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to fire Ukraine’s chief prosecutor in March 2016, as I previously reported. The Burisma case was transferred to NABU, then shut down.

On Trade Me, the national median advertised rent hit $495 a week, up 5.3 per cent on last year.

So Jacinda has beaten National but still has work to do to go higher than Clarke.

Why would Simon Bridges die in a ditch over slushy machines for Corrections staff whom much of the country would have some degree of respect for in that they deal with the scum de la scum and assist in keeping them away from civilised society – for a while.
He looks like a silly little boy.
With his speech impediment and lost puppy look he really needs to be commanding in other ways… like content .
At present he is an topic-taker – admittedly against a crooked, biased press but this is not new – in NZ or USA – so does not show any leadership promise. Commander in Chief Trump has it far worse.

I thought I’d a have glance at the teev one this morning to see Uriah Heep aka Johnny Campbell rubbing his ‘ands with very ‘eavy very ‘umble sanctimony.
Bridges was on.
He is a lost soul.
If he could get to 20% in the PM poll by Dec 1,2019, will give $1000 to every ‘child in poverty’ for Xmas.
One biiiillion dollars. It does not matter.

I have no antipathy whatsoever for Bridges.
He is just the wrong guy at this point in history and looks like a subset of Ardern in attitude.

If you look back at 1972 to 1975 you can see with R.D. Muldoon as opposition leader Labour had to get some things right to get a second term. They did not succeed.
Bridges is more like the personality of Rowling and the latter never won a General election as leader.

Bridges does not get it right, again!
The Taupo Mayor had just said that the 8 death accident was on a decent bit of road, with double yellow lines so clearly someone was on the wrong side of the road.
All Bridges could offer is that roads need improving. His message was well off the mark in this circumstance. It sounds like bad driving by at least one party in daylight, open road conditions.
Bridges must stand aside.

Interesting to note that it was the platinum blonde who interviewed Bridges.
I wonder if Bridges has spoken to Campbell since Campbell wound him up on his show 6 or so years ago?

I say look at the UK Conservative Party major disconnect with voters since they got a clean majority in 2015. Roll forward to 2019 and it is a whole new ball game esp 23 May. There will be blood!

Support is not a given.
It is earned by aligning with followers, not agreeing with the Govt most of the time (Guns) and taking pot shots at public servants/Prison guards over a million bucks when nearly a billion extra is thrown at the Pacific islands and many more topics to draw Govt blood over. HTFU.

  in a way I agree with some of it. We have an obesity problems today. Living 5 minutes from a school I was surprised ot see that the school bus comes down our street to pick kids up. As for the pollution from cars, I thought by then we were meant to be mostly electric cars that don’t cause pollution.

    Bear in mind the bus may come from ten miles away and the poor old driver has an obligation to pick up all the kids on the way to school alien. Blame the lazy parents.
    However I can see the wider picture where all the poor old pensioners will have to walk/cycle/get the bus/pay for a taxi to get their shopping home.

Tamaki has repeatedly criticised the Government for not funding him to deliver his programme in New Zealand prisons, despite never making a formal application as part of the Corrections tender process.

Davis said there was no verified, independent research showing the programme has achieved success, and lashed out at Tamaki, calling his claims duplicitous.

He said that, despite what Tamaki claims, Man Up has never been shut out of prisons, and has never followed the proper application process.

Davis is proving useless and now Grant Robertson is lashing out like a dick-on-twitter.* He scares them because he’s actually got the balls to take them on. Bridges could learn a thing or two about “in your face” from Tamaki, just on the right message.

    Traditional farmers would go under as they need to be able to pay the rates demanded with menaces, to District Councils, Regional Councils, which often like to build stadiums, airports, swimming pools, pensioner housing, civic centres, statues, all for the diverse vibrant sustainability of the community. Then to meet mortgages, up grade housing to government standards for workers, and pay the GST that they have to charge as extra on the milk, plus general taxes.
    Comply with fertilizer nutrient consents, effluent disposal consents, stock and dairy shed water consents, and employ a person full time to do all the tick boxes for the authorities.
    The dairy companies also have a lot of hoops also to comply with, hygiene, quality of water, water ways fenced off and plantings, safety & health.
    
    Divide it up and sell off lifestyle blocks, or subdivision if handy to a town or city. Although that is not very profitable, as electricity, resource consents, etc…. etc… all flow to another bureaucracy.
    Thank goodness for some that some things are worth millions of dollars. 🙂 and so maybe there is something left at the end of the long day.

    Rubbish, traditional low-intensity farmers cannot afford to pay attention to the fine details of environmental management given their low productivity. It costs a lot of money to manage nutrient budgets, irrigation, fencing, stock movement, herd management/genetic development, effluent processing and spreading in a manner that minimises environmental damage. You are indulging in fantasies of romantic luddism like most ill-informed urbanites – old style low intensity farms did more damage, it’s just that it wasn’t noticed, measured or commented upon during the era where it was economic.

So, it’s all the gummint’s fault? JAG also says that the ordinary NZ driver makes mistakes and we have to look at the driving environment. I may be wrong on this but it appears that the accident occurred when one vehicle drove on the wrong side of the road, overlooking the fact that this tends to bring two vehicles into the same, converging, line of traffic. The outcome is foreseeable. You don’t need barriers or a brick wall down the middle of the road to tell you that.
IMHO, ordinary New Zealanders don’t do that. If they do, they should not be driving.
