  I was talking to a teacher in a diverse school (40% Maori, 60% PI) and she said that a big difference in achievement is aspiration. The culture with the lowest aspiration that she came across was Maori and this was reflect in their results. Bennett’s race crime is to aspire to success and achieve it.

      All of that. I studied the white working class in Britain who had the same problem. To be successful you have to work at school, defer gratification and follow healthy habits. To the white working class changing how you behave is considered betraying your roots. Many Maori take a similar view – the very attributes that make people successful are considered ‘pakeha ways’ and so they are rejected.
      
      I’ve worked with ‘immersion’ Maori and the most common element I found was that they were kowtowed by their culture and unable to navigate the ‘Pakeha world’. As you can imagine, that cut their opportunities for success right down.

        If Maori youth open their eyes, they will see that the ways of the pakeha are also the ways of the Indian, the Korean, the Chinese, the Japanese, and other successful non-white, scholastic-valuing cultures.

      Maybe the reason Moari do so well in Australia is because they are outside the Maori Kingitunga system we have here in NZ. Here Maori live in an unacknowledged class system within their community, which is un-PC to talk about.

    That is to be expected among the Polynesian communities. It is cultural–not recognising that is the pedagogues failure.
    
    Children whose parents have lesser status than another in their school class will deliberately be seen not to outshine a higher-status family child. This is deeply ingrained manners and sanctions can be imposed, including on parents, for non compliance.
    NZ is not an egalitarian society.

      pdm – agreed, Willy Jackson has always been ignorant, and always been a racist kunekune too. But this is a bit different – racist towards another Maori, albeit a “kirima maori” (our derogatory term for pale skinned maori).
      
      So Willy now considers himself the self-appointed determiner of who qualifies as “maori” – appears the dickhead now has a full-blown God complex! He should remember he has no mandate at all to opine on behalf of “all” Maori, he should just shut his racist neck, and slither back into his cave.

  Not according to Mr Gormley. On Morning Report, Gormley made it clear there was only capacity for those with a job to do and that he was happy to talk to Peters about.
  
  What he should have said, but didn’t, “is that there is no room for show boating politicians, who will only get in the way and endanger the safety of those who have a job to do when they go into the mine”.

  Yep way more expensive than it would have been in 2017 or 2018 when the share price was 350ish.
  
  But seems like a pretty good bet to me, they need the cash for business expansion, not operations – Model Y (ready to be rolled out, just need money for production lines), Semi (also ready for production), and building more factories, as well as their push into overseas markets (means a lot more cash tied up in inventory – cars on ships). Their autonomous tech is pretty compelling too, they are accumulating snippets of video from the little scares that occur in daily driving from 100’s of 1000’s of cars to better train their neural networks toward being better than human’s (on average) in a year or two.

When you really analyze the media at this time you can come to no other conclusion than what you see, it is a orchestrated agenda to destroy Simon Bridges. No matter whether you like him or despise the Opposition Leader it is disgraceful what is happening and I am surprised that there has been not one fair minded Journalist come to his aid. You can tell that Winston has pushed the fact and you can tell why, he is a bitter past his used by date and as some would say very selfish and close to being called corrupt and Simon has already damaged his ego in the past.

    kowtow – the media seem to conveniently forget Sonny Bill Williams other transgressions too. For example: his sleazy sexual trysts in a public toilet with the Aussie iron woman (classy!). I know it’s become a bit of a thing for polynesian rugger/league players (Aaron Smith etc) to shag their Caucasian conquests in shithouse cubicles, but I think Israel Folau has higher standards and morals (and respect for women) than that.

I’ve seen a few articles and heard a few radio interviews where international journalists are saying that Ardern has shown she is good at handling a crisis – referring to the Chch shootings.

Really?

She certainly did a good job of showing empathy and doing the hugz. But that is hardly a crisis that requires leadership.

Generally the crises politicians face are those requiring some hard calls. That’s what really tests leadership.

Her leadership qualities are rubbish. She can’t even keep her own cabinet in line, let alone have the guts to make controversial calls.

  She would not have had a clue how to handle that crisis. Anyway the police, ambos, hospital doctors and nurses capably handled the situation without Jacinda’s prompting, and now coroners, Crown Law, victim support groups and others are capably handling the aftermath without her prompting.

  “Progressive” journalists and other such activists will love her as she was seen to take firearms off lawful licensed owners. In the world of ‘progressive’ agendas this sets her well apart from any American politicians who have “failed” to do same. This is why she’s being hailed , not so much for what she has done but the message is more aimed at and for the contrast against those American politicians who haven’t.

    The Briyish Euro elections are based on preferential voting, not FPP. The country is divided into broad geographical regions. The number of MEPs from the UK is based on UK population as a percentage of European and then the number of MEPs per region is based on the regions population as a percentage of the UK population.
    
    The UK results will not be published until after the rest of Europe votes & their polls close, which is on Sunday (European time).

      I realise there is a difference in voting systems hullkiwi –that is why I mentioned the UK GE in particular.
      But even the EU elections could be affected a bit, given the the form PV the UK uses. But in the long it should not matter as you would think BP and UKIP would work together in the EU Parliament IF it gets that far.
      I read there is a by-election to be held in Peterborough because Labour MP Fioana Onasanya has been removed with a recall petition.
      The Brexit Party are going to stand a candidate (Labour had a majority of about 600 ) so that will be interesting.

        The Local Govt Elections are on at the moment.
        There’s a lot of chatter about how people are ‘spoiling’ their votes and not voting for anyone.
        They spoil them by writing comments on them.
        I’ll leave it to your imagination what sort of comments are being made.
        Spoiled votes get counted so it will be interesting to see the total of what is effectively a protest vote.

        The first results of the Council votes should be coming through now.
        
        Ross12, over the past 25 years the Euro elections have been a big failure for the Tories.
        
        1994 – they got a kicking, because the Tory party was on the slide;
        
        1999 & 2004 – they recovered , as Labour lost ground over Europe. But 2004, saw the emergence of Veritas (after Robert Kilroy-Silk split from UKIP).
        
        2009 and 2014 saw the Tories lose support to UKIP.
        
        The Tories problem has always been the Tory “whets” who local constituencies have continued to refuse to deal with over the decades. If the likes of Portilo had been leader of the party, the Tories may started to look like resolving their problem and parties like UKIP and BP (all ex Tories) may not have been necessary.

        They will probably use that sort information to explain away the thrashing they will get.
        Just looked the Telegraph early reports on the Council elections –a senior Conservative cabinet guy is saying he is not surprised they are getting hammered but if they end up losing 500 seats and not the 1000 some predicted then it would be OK –what an absolute tosser. The current prediction is a loss of 800 councillors.
        So I can see the spin they will put on the EU election result before it even takes place.

Remember how Maurice Williamson resigned as a Minister over allegations he had contacted a senior police officer to enquire into the arrest of a friend/constituent.

So what’s the difference between Williamson and Shane Jones? It can be argued that Jones’ intervention is even more serious because the Semenoff matter was actually before the courts.

The National Party is accusing the Regional Economic Development Minister of a “cover-up” due to his conflicting answers about a court case.

Shane Jones has been under scrutiny regarding his communications about a prosecution involving the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and a Northland trucking company, Semenoff Logging.

The company, which carries an estimated 15 to 20 percent of the Northland log trade, faces court action over alleged safety breaches.

Mr Jones, who’s also the Associate Transport Minister, last month told Parliament he’d had a brief discussion with NZTA’s acting chief executive about the case.

But he later told RNZ he had “never once” discussed it with the acting CEO.

In response to an Official Information Act request, NZTA confirmed “a brief conversation” did take place at the end of an unrelated meeting on 25 March.

“Minister Jones asked for more information on the Stan Semenoff Logging Compliance Case, which the NZ Transport Agency provided,” the statement said.

National MP Paul Goldsmith said Mr Jones’ story had been “all over the place” in what looked like a “cover-up”.

“He has a different story on every different day. It’s very hard to pin him down,” Mr Goldsmith said.

“I heard him on Morning Report on RNZ saying he hadn’t spoken to the CEO about the case. He denied it point-blank.

“We now have official documents showing that’s not the case.”

Mr Goldsmith said it was “totally inappropriate” for Mr Jones to seek information about the case from the Transport Agency.

National has got Jones bang to rights on this issue, and it seems that the Minister has misled both Parliament and the public. Yet Jacinda Ardern is happy to have him in her ministry.

Maurice Williamson paid a high price for what was probably an innocent phone call. He appreciated that he shouldn’t have made the call, and did the honourable thing by resigning. Is Shane Jones similarly honourable, or will he continue to bluster and obfuscate to keep his seat at the trough?

While Willie Jackson and Paula Bennett trade insults, and exchange racist and hatred comments without seeming restraint from either Parliament or the Human Rights Commission, Willie Jackson should perhaps consider that the measure of a Maori politician could be the manner (mana) in which he and the Labour caucus stood to preserve an education taonga – the model of partnership schools – which are so fucked now that they are a case to be considered by the Waitangi Tribunal.

Willie Jackson may think to “whakapapa Maori” defines you as Maori.
There surely is a bit more to it than that, but it is not evidenced by anything he or his Labour Maori caucus have done.
Winston promised to have a referendum on the special Maori seats.
Jackson has rendered them meaningless, so why worry?

Andrew Little is open to not re-entering Pike River mine and says if no progress has been made by Christmas, officials will start questioning if that is the right move [Little] told The AM Show on Friday that if problems continue to arise and nothing can be done to make the re-entry safe, they may have to call quits on the operation.

“There will come a point where we say ‘we have fulfilled our commitment to do everything possible and everything conceivable and safely, but we can’t get there or we can’t go any further’,” he said.

“We are making judgement calls all the time and certainly by Christmas, we expect, we’ve planned for, to have made considerable progress by that time. So if we haven’t, then yeah, these questions definitely arise.”

  What exactly do the mean by “Unusual levels of Oxygen?” Air has about 79% Nitrogen, 20% O2 and the rest is made up of trace gasses. If they have allowed air in, the level of O2 should be about 19%, possibly less. If its less O2, the mine should be safer. As the mine is bleeding Methane, there will be high concentrations in there and at about 15% is at optimal mix to explode. The safest way to enter would be to saturate the mine with CO2 or Argon (or any other inert gas ) and use breathing apparatus to enter.

    Pike River Mine is a hole in the ground that A Little is trying to fill with money – but it is a useful distraction from the clusterwhatsit that is the current Government.

Some Pike River Families have lambasted the National Party for saying the Mine was not safe to enter.

Labour says the Mine might not be safe to re enter, and suddenly that’s ok.

I’ve seen occasional PJW clips, he’s over-the-top but generally has reasonable points to make, criticises religious dickheads of all sorts (Greens, Fems, SJWs, Muslims and their political and media mouthpieces), not exhorting anyone to violence etc.

Milo is similar, over-the-top, shock-jock who has marginalised himself with antics. A pity as he has a good brain and rapier wit and could be a strong voice if he dialled it back a little. Still nothing worthy of banning, certainly no exhortations to violence etc.

By that standard this is definitely a bridge too far. Control left seeking to limit discourse, us usual, as always. Fuck them.

Both labour and the greens believe it is unfair to penalise single parents who refuse to name the father of their child that they are getting benefit payments for. They have said this is one thing they will immediately remove, ah no, you’ll have to wait until April 2019 for it to be removed, so I guess they aren’t really concerned about it or they would remove it straight away. Unless there are safety issues for the mother and child the father should be supporting their child

“At this point, the Government only confirmed it would get rid of one sanction – the penalty for mothers who didn’t tell authorities the name of the other parent.

“Around 24,000 children will be significantly better off as a result of this change, with many sole parents’ incomes increasing by an average of $34 a week,” Sepuloni said.

The change would come into force in April next year and would cost $113.4 million over four years.“
