  I don’t really get all this ‘engagement’ thing when a couple have been living together for a considerable length of time and already have a baby. Why bother with an ‘engagement’? The traditional rites of passage- courtship, engagement, marriage, children have a logical and socially responsible pattern.
  
  Isn’t the engagement period a time when a couple gets to deepen their relationship and see whether they could indeed commit to a life time together and take on the responsibility of a family?

Watched the Crusaders v Sharks game last night.
Was surprised at the fulsome praise heaped on the Sharks, who IMO, played a negative, boring game based on disruptive defence with no attacking flair at all.
The Crusaders scored three converted tries.
The Sharks had a good penalty goal kicker. That’s all.

  The Sharks did little on attack, but they found a way to get in the Crusaders’ faces and disrupt them. I am sure plenty of Super Rugby coaches will be watching the video of that match.
  
  The Crusaders, even with key players being rested, did not respond especially well to the pressure exerted on them, and sometime in the future, the high penalty count against them will cost them. They need to work on their discipline.

  ‘Fulsome’ is one of those weird English words that can mean very good or very bad. Good as in lots of. Bad as in way OTT to the point of being not good at all, even offensive. Seems to be used more as ‘good’ nowadays but can still be confusing.

      Yes, ending a marriage is often difficult and financially deleterious, but not too many people would regard getting married as a ‘strategic’ mistake. It seems to me that marriages should be celebrated unless one has such intimate knowledge of the persons involved that one considers a disaster will ensue.

        That Stuff saw fit to comment on the positive political effect of Jacinda’s decision says it all really. We’ll have to see but I’d bet that the wedding and its attendant “newsworthiness” will be carefully planned to make the maximum political capital out of it.   If the ratings for Prince Harry’s marriage to Megan Markhel are anything to go by and the amount of MSM coverage in this sad joke of a country, New Zealand mums and dads love this sort of shit and Labour will likely go above 50% as a result of wedding photos.
  
  New Zealand gets what it deserves. National need to stop debating policy and start acting like celebrities if they want a chance of winning the next election.
  
  The only reason New Zealand’s economy isn’t going to go to shit is because both Labour and National are happy to sell New Zealand to China. China doesn’t need a free-trade agreement with a shit small country like ours, they’re just doing it for publicity and propaganda purposes, not for economic reasons. Our country should realize by now how absolutely insignificant we are and how our elections don’t actually mean shit for our economy given how left wing both the Labour and National parties are, so politics just becomes a game of my team beating your team, and if that’s the case, then National need to get with the program and start using marketing and shit to appeal to the NZ public. The wedding will be next year giving labour and jacinda huge free press and woman’s magazine coverage. the way the media will fall over her and the wedding labour would never of been able to afford to buy. If you thought the baby was bad enough the wedding is going to be far worse.

  I’m tired of the Prime Minister’s cheap “Look at Me” contrivances. Her ‘personal’ lifestyle since she became Prime Minister is for her to live with, and most of us would not begrudge her the benefits of a stable relationship and healthy offspring.
  
  However, Ardern chose a long time ago to follow an unconventional pathway, and to hell with what her subjects felt. Now it’s a bit rich for her to be orchestrating a belated formal “engagement”, to be followed no doubt by by a fortuitously-timed wedding before next year’s General Election. What could make anyone remotely cynical about all that?
  
  Maybe 21 June 2020, poor little Neve’s first birthday, might draw some additional mileage out of the grand occasion?

And there isn’t even a direct quote from the PM on the matter in which she’s alleged to be “reining” people in. It’s done through a spokesit.

  Re not naming fathers- a lot of our carefree and unaccountable younger women do not know who the fathers are of their various children – so difficult to identify for taxing purposes.
  What happens when solo, or unmarried women/men have children via surrogacy or IVF donation?
  There are many, many children growing up with no knowledge of their biological fathers and no way of finding out. You can’t tax semen donations, can you?

No wonder they act up – like in the USSR for example, when the system is ‘perfect’, if there is an issue, just drug ’em up, because they are clearly at fault.
    Why have men allegedly become more ‘toxic’ and maladjusted, the greater the proportion of women who are the sole parent or caregiver? If you can’t or won’t name the father, you should get zero. Try some personal responsibility too. People will always respond to short term incentives, even if they lead to negative consequences (welfare dependency etc.) down the track. Stupid people lacking foresight are not in a position to know what is best for them or for their fellow members of society. Hence, they vote Labour/Greens.

  Although my fave was the weather station in Iceland which used to be on open ground in a town 50 years ago which over time ended up being where the airport was and was sited on a black heat absorbing Tarmac runway and was regularly blasted with hot jet wash.
  Apparently that part of Iceland was warming a lot!

      I rather liked the Tasmanian record at the lighthouse, I think it is Low Head. Had a fairly abrupt transition from relatively steady to significant warming and was often used as a result to show “global warming”.
      
      Then Warwick Hughes (dead some years now) visited and looked at records and photos and was able to show that at the same time that the temperatures suddenly started to increase, the trees around the weather station had grown enough to start protecting it from the prevailing winds. Most definitely a purely local explanation that didn’t (and hasn’t) stopped it from being used as a reference station for those intent on emphasising warming.
      
      The Urban heat island is absolutely known to exist, and it scales more or less with population. This has been often shown on a geographic basis, but there is less work on the time related effects such as the growth of populations in an area over time. This is significantly harder to do.

    The temperature record is only for those places where there are “observations’. The IPCC models only have cover for 1/3 of the earth and computer fill-in for the rest. With “data” points 300Km apart on their model grid that takes some fudging. That is dished up as “science”.

How can anyone in the media say that Andrew Little and the Coalition have been more caring and done more for the families of Pike River than John Key and National did. It has always been toxic and very dangerous to go into this mine and no amount of bullshit that the media or their Jounalists will change this. When they finally decide they can’t afford the loss of more lives to try and get evidence to justify their cause will they then issue a apology to those that tried before them and excepted that they couldn’t bear to have more deaths on their conscience either so decided to make the mine unsafe for entry in the name of safety.

From the Pike River Recovery Agency website / Frequently asked questions:
Why can’t you put fresh air up to the roof fall?  […] The [roof] fall has previously been on fire and consequently has the potential for spontaneous combustion. Because fresh air and methane create a potentially explosive mixture, it is essential therefore that fresh air (oxygen) is kept away from the roof fall. This will be achieved by a constant flow of nitrogen, introduced from the mine workings, over the roof fall, and vented through designated boreholes. The roof fall itself will be constantly monitored for any signs of spontaneous combustion and the atmosphere monitored to ensure that it remains inert.[1]

A 3 per cent oxygen level was detected on Wednesday at a borehole directly above a roof fall 2.3km up the tunnel entrance to the mine. [2]

Mr Pattinson said a new tube system was now being used to monitor the mine and this was not resulting in any extra oxygen being drawn inside.
“They’re reading different so we’re just doing some more testing over the next few days to make sure we’re confident with that but [I have] every confidence that it’s a tube fault.”
The faulty tube was possibly laid up to eight years ago. [3]

So independent of whatever caused the original four explosions, with up to possibly four causes, yet another explosion, or fire, could result now from exposure of oxygen to the roof fall material at the 2.3km point up the drift.
And that is, or was, being monitored by a tube that could be eight years old?
Already, how does WorkSafe or Pike River Recovery Agency explain that?

  With what seems to be massive advances in drone technology recently, why is a specially built drone not used to inspect the Pike River drift.
  Will they not fly in the drift atmosphere?
  Would their internal workings in action be a source of gas ignition?
  Does the accessible length of drift, 2,3km entry to the roof-fall, exceed the distance video can be transmitted from such a drone, or the range over which a drone can be controlled?

    To be honest, I don’t know what else Barr could have done. He released the whole report. Anyone can see it. You can even buy it on Amazon in book form. It’s all out in the open. Practically nothing is hidden in it.

    Back in the early 2000’s a freight co I was working for appointed a new regional manager, a fit healthy type who wished to impart his healthy lifestyle on the crew.
    First thing he did was axe meat from the cafeteria menu, out went lambshanks, chips and steak pies, in came tuna salads and sushi.
    Within a week there was a revolt, my Samoan workmates 100+ kg who would down a double serving of lambshanks for smoko threatened to strike.
    It all came to head but the boss wouldn’t back down, take it or leave he said. The place almost ground to a halt, a go slow was in place, and freight began piling up and took days to deliver.Clients were howling but the lads stuck it out.
    Finally after weeks of chaos a compromise was reached. The local KFC was allowed on site to deliver buckets of the Colonel’s finest chicken in return for the lads clearing the backlog. It worked well and the local KFC did a roaring trade.
    The new manager however never got over the compromise and resigned weeks later and the lads celebrated by having an onsite bbq with steaks, chops and a few beers.

Back in the early 2000’s a freight co I was working for appointed a new regional manager, a fit healthy type who wished to impact his healthy lifestyle on the crew.
First thing he did was axe meat from the cafeteria menu, out went lambshanks, chips and steak pies, in came tuna salads and sushi.
Within a week there was a revolt, my Samoan workmates 100+ kg who would down a double serving of lambshanks for smoko threatened to strike.
It all came to head but the boss wouldn’t back down, take it or leave he said. The place almost ground to a halt, a go slow was in place, and freight began piling up and took days to deliver.Clients were howling but the lads stuck it out.
Finally after weeks of chaos a compromise was reached. The local KFC was allowed on site to deliver buckets of the Colonel’s finest chicken in return for the lads clearing the backlog. It worked well and the local KFC did a roaring trade.
The new manager however never got over the compromise and resigned weeks later and the lads celebrated by having an onsite bbq with steaks, chops and a few beers.
