        Are you saying that despite a week of lying by ardern, robertson and “what’s in it for wynston” that ardern is not to called a liar?
        
        Aren’t you being a little bit precious?
        
        The reference to the fisherman is accurate and has been used by many on this blog and elsewhere. While I may have been derogatory about him I feel that is not a misrepresentation of him and does not the “first family” title warrant strong criticism?
        
        I understand David is legally responsible but calling into question someone’s honesty when it has been clearly exposed on nummerous occasions as lacking cannot be libelous in any way.

  Another great example of the COL’s “we know best and we will do it our way” from Jones. This is about the sealing of 10k’s of gravel road leading to Lake Waikaremoana. He is now calling the locals hillbillies for resisting it. SH 38 either side of Waikaremoana has long stretches of unsealed road, mostly between Waikaremoana and Murupara. Like the residents in and around Waikaremoana, the residents of Ruatahuna have long resisted the sealing of gravel stretches of road. Why?
  When I lived in Wairoa in the early 80’s the idea of sealing was bandied about. This would turn SH38 into a easy drive between Rotorua and Wairoa. As it is now in gravel, only the really keen tourists, hunters and fishermen go there. Sealing the road will increase traffic, accidents, rubbish and resentment of the population who want things to stay as they are. The camping grounds along the way will become hangouts for the disruptive and unruly.
  The population made it quite clear back then that any attempt to lay seal would be thwarted. Everyone knew what that meant! Leave the place alone Shane!..it is beautifully isolated and the population and visitors want it to stay that way, not put up with you arrogant meddling.

    While we’re on matters peripheral to the trial of Brenton Harrison Tarrant, there’s an interesting overseas look at New Zealand media’s ~~collusion~~ agreement on how they will cover the hearings.
    
    It’s at the web site, Nieman Lab, an offshoot of the Nieman Journalism Foundation at Harvard.
    
    The article notes how NZ media are already downplaying the case. It describes the agreement of the big media players as noteworthy, “because it takes the relationship between media coverage and a copycat effect — and a lack of desire to glorify a shooter — as a starting point.”
    
    Paul Thompson, Radio NZ chief executive, is reported as stressing that each of the main media outlets will be doing its own coverage, but that they’ll be able to communicate with each other throughout on how things are going.

    The topic was “Nazi music” referring to the complaint made by a muslim about someone playing Nazi music outside the court yesterday
    
    My comment pointed out that Nazi music, if there is such a thing, could not be deemed offensive as the Nazis had a mutual understanding pact during the second world war so therefore “Nazi” music would have been played in the middle east during that time. I even posted the wiki page showing the details of that pact.
    
    My comment that someone from that area not knowing there own history was an idiot may be a tad harsh but is not a slur as it is factually correct.
    
    I have no issue with being “called out” when wrong, but my comment was on topic and factually correct.

The elite have bestowed their approval on Christchurch’s $100 million, new multi-storey library, which, in addition to being a multi-storey book barn, is a free entertainment centre with jigsaw puzzles, computer walls, and board games, and for the more industrious, sewing machines and overlockers.

Here’s what the Property Council says of the library, bestowed a Maori name, Turanga, and recipient of the council’s supreme award for the year:

”Turanga “speaks of whakapapa across generations, connections to the north and out to Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa and the wider Pacific”.

AND …

””Turanga encompasses a wide range of facilities for the community including a heritage collection, an innovation zone, music and video studios, 200-seat arena, cafe and outdoor roof terraces. There is a high level of community pride and ownership which will ensure it remains relevant to the city and community for decades to come.”

Many Christchurch citizens, being put through the rates wringer, will disagree with the Property Council, which represents commercial property owners and, it says, more than 10,000 “property professionals”. To home ratepayers, the award will more likely suggest that commercial property investors, at least in Christchurch, should pay a bigger, fairer share of the city’s rates.

  Dedicated media computer labs at Turanga are unusable due to ‘itinerant’ folk who swear loudly, play videos and/or gambling games on full volume without headphones and stink of piss and shit. Turanga fast becoming the former ‘Peterborough Street’ of libraries.
  
  Peteborough had a permament stench of piss and shit and a regular attendance of abusive drunk /drugged ‘itinerant’ earthlings.
  
  Spoke to a security guard at Turanga who said when it first opened the ‘itinerant’ folk setup camp on the top floor using outdoor library furniture they relocated inside:)
  
  The full time C.C.C. homeless liaison officer couldn’t deal with the ‘Itinerant’ folk (no surprises that feelz don’t work) and security was beefed up.
  
  Mention any of these problems to librarians onsite and you will be met with a blank stare.
  The same applies to the Turanga security guards who don’t give a f$%k.
  
  These problems are to be encouraged according to LIANZA
  It is part of the manifiesto for libraries of the future! see L.I.A.N.Z.A.
  
  I won’t be back to Turanga. It is a glorified half way house/ drop in centre for the piss addled/ homeless.

    Some time back I was dropping off a cheque at an IRD office , and in the outer office was a security guard . Lounging in a chair, on duty. Charming I thinks to myself , when the public service have a problem they hire private security , on the back of the ever stressed tax payer of course.
    
    If I have a problem , I have to phone Plod , if you can get him .

Just a heads up, if you own a Samsung phone and have noticed the monthly security updates are no longer monthly, check your phone to see when it got the last updates, then check another country. Found out that my phone had received one security update this year while overseas it had continued to received monthly updates. Samsung nz and Australia are refusing to release updates to critical issues in nz that are being released overseas

  Its monthly for newer phones and quarterly for older phones that still receive updates while still older phones cease to be updated

    yeah which makes their failure to release the updates in NZ that are being released overseas puzzling. As I said Samsung NZ and Australia are refusing to release updates in NZ that are being released overseas. 6 updates released so far for the same phone overseas, 1 update released in NZ with samsung NZ claiming that it was the providers delaying the updates, the providers denied this so samsung then claimed the updates are released only when needed, seems the phone needed them every month overseas, just not in NZ and Australia.

At its heart, Kiwibuild was a promise to end the housing crisis. The set of reforms Minister Twyford is overseeing can fulfil that promise, if he has the chance to see them through.

The housing crisis has nothing to do with government failing to build enough homes. It stems instead from a nasty mess of perverse incentives facing growing councils, debt limits, infrastructure financing problems, and difficulty in revising district plans under RMA processes – as a starting point.

If the prior National government understood any of it, there was scant evidence of that understanding in policy. While Kiwibuild also missed the point, the policy is only a minor part of the government’s housing supply agenda – despite the disproportionate attention it draws. Focusing on the notable failure of one part of the package makes for great political sport but does nothing to advance housing reform more generally.

Last February, I warned in this newsletter that Kiwibuild could never solve the housing crisis. The targets set were utterly unrealistic and the fundamental blockages lay elsewhere. In response, the Initiative produced a report sharply critical of the programme.

But my Insights column also said that the government should be given a pass on its likely-to-be inevitable failure to hit its building targets, but only if it made sufficient progress on the rest of the supply agenda.

That more fundamental reform is coming. It has been slower coming than we would like, in part because Kiwibuild has proved to be a distracting millstone. But, done properly, the coming changes to infrastructure finance will be transformational.

Infrastructure supporting new development will be financed by bonds backed by levies on the properties benefitting from the infrastructure rather than depending on overstretched Council balance sheets. It will enable leapfrogging of existing landbanks and help unlock housing affordability.

No Member of Parliament understands New Zealand’s housing policy problems as well as Minister Twyford. Shuffling him from the Housing portfolio might bestow a political win on National, but it will come at substantial cost to everyone harmed by broken housing policies.

New Zealand has to build its way out of the housing crisis. Enabling that building is the most important task. And Minister Twyford’s broader agenda is our best hope of getting there. Focus less on how many houses the government builds, and more on the development enabled by the coming reforms.

I’ve been listening to Magic Radio mornings, and recently in the afternoons too.
I was discomfited by Sean Plunket yesterday afternoon when he hectored, bullied even, a caller who had a baby, and wanted help from some social service or other.
Plunket used the call to berate him for ‘breeding a child that he couldn’t support’. I realise he was making a point about people who depend on the state as a right, but his treatment of this young man was cruel and showed up an ugly side of his own nature.
Apparently there was considerable feedback from other listeners, which resulted in a lot of loud self-justification from Plunket, none of which showed him in a better light.

The Christchurch Press can’t let go on its failed drive to have the Crusaders’ name changed because of the Christchurch mosques massacre.

In the Press today, Stuff employee Grant Shimmin harps on about why the name should have been changed.

Shimmin argues that it would have been an amazing gesture of “inclusion and reconciliation” if the rugby authorities had just changed the Crusaders’ name and “dealt with the complications” afterwards.

He concludes by writing that if you want to call him a social justice warrior then “come at me”, and he will take the term as a compliment.

Sanctimonious, even egotistic, garbage, but also a signal that the Press knows better than its readers. It’s out to dictate, rather than to reflect its customers’ wishes, opinions, and wants.

  It’s not shared by most New Zealanders, because most New Zealanders make no connection between the rugby team name “Crusaders” and a religious war in 1095. That is an interpretation never associated with the team in the past, so why impose it now? People see “crusade”, in the context of sport, as another word for “striving”. That is the most applicable interpretation rather than meaning “anti-religious”. That would be a massive stretch to the point of ridiculous, clearly never intended, and obviously political.

      Many fought alongside and with the British and colonials in the Land Wars, and they were a combat unit at Gallipoli.
      
      Later in World War 1, in France, they formed a Pioneer (sappers) battalion, but units of Pakeha soldiers were also transferred into that battalion.
      
      Not all Maori wanted to fight. Waikato Maori were reluctant to fight in World War 1 because they were still smarting from the land confiscations.

Over on the Standard they are opposing Seymours Freedom to Speak bill. “Mr Seymour said while it should be a crime to incite or threaten violence, no one should be punished for insulting speech” Fair enough. But the Standard is opposing Seymours statement and the article has a picture of Seymour with an H on his head, which is designed to align him with a hologram fictional character. How is putting an H on someones forehead and call them a hologram which is dehumanising ok in progressiveland, but calling Ghahraman a threat to democracy in response to a policy is not.? Therein lies the issue with freedom of speech who decides. Meanwhile the Standard is taking full advantage of it’s freedom to insult, while telling others it should be prohibited by law.

      If Seymour doesn’t stuff it up, as he did his chance to get considered and reasoned, debated changes to firearms law, this could get ACT in with enough MPs to be a good coalition partner for National.
      
      Section 4 of the Summary Offences Act 1981 also includes a fine of up to $500 for anyone who “in or within hearing of any public place, uses any indecent or obscene words.”

2) opinion piece in Stuff about Tiwai Point is written like an 8 year old girl having a tantrum wrote it. Apart from the tone and childish language she claims Tiwai should be closed, it wouldn’t impact Invercargill and power prices in rest of NZ would drop significantly.   The writer naively encloses the description “pot line” in quotation marks, as though this is an exotic term. It’s been appearing in New Zealand newspapers for around half a century.
  
  She is ignorant of the huge cost of upgrading transmission structure to carry Manapouri electricity north and under Cook Strait. She also seems to be unaware of transmission loss – the power that would be burned in the lines carrying electricity to the north.
