If TVNZ reported it coorectly and I have understand it our coalition of clowns have announced a Govt Gtee scheme for Bank deposits between $30 and $50000. So does this mean a deposit of$29999 is not covered and one of $60000 is either not covered or just the $20,000 between???????? Sounds like another policy from the Committee on stoopidity set up to fuck ther NZ economy.

  For a start if one of the the big banks eg ANZ collapses, the fallout would be catastrophic.
  If that was to happen are you expecting the nanny state to turn around and fork out taxpayers money for all deposits as they did with South Canterbury Finance because whatever levy the banks will be charged beforehand sure ain’t going to cover the outgoings?
  From what I understand the idea is that clients won’t be left stone cold broke and unable to put sausages on the table.

    MCos, the state picks up the tab on these schemes, as the banks do not have the reserves to cover the collapse of a bank as almost happened in the UK in 2008.

    You completely miss the point which is what does the Gtee actually cover – Australia covers $250,000 per institution per depositor, the UK 80,000 pounds so covering 30-50,000 seems at best confusing and at worst typical of the r soles in the media or Govt.

  Sounds nice but someone will have to pay for it. Just because the government charges the banks a levy does not mean the bank will end up worse off. Who exactly does really pay for it will depend on elasticity of demand. But I suspect most of the cost will flow through to higher interest rates for borrowers and therefore make housing even less affordable.

    I am both a depositor and a shareholder in the major Banks.

      The bank can choose how and if it recovers the fees. I think depositors have alternative investment choices so the bank won’t want to charge them fees or reduce deposit rates. Whereas the alternatives for home loan borrowers are few or none. So the borrowers are more likely to end up paying in the form of higher interest rates.

    Probably a combination of lower returns to lenders and a marginally higher rate on borrowers.
    
    And there’s nothing wrong with this, in fact I understood this to already be the case in NZ as it is in many locations overseas. If the government is to guarantee deposits up to some limit then it seems entirely fair to me that as a form of insurance, it is chargeable to those who stand to benefit. As long as the fee/margin is reasonable there should be little to dispute. I do agree that as an imposed burden the cost is at least likely to be inflated. A voluntary scheme would probably have a low takeup but would enable competition to at least attempt to keep a lid on the rates.
    
    Of course such insurance is only valuable if the organization offering the insurance is itself sufficiently capable of paying out. The 2008 “financial crisis” was in part triggered when AIG (I think it was) who had insured large quantities of mortgage backed securities found itself unable to meet the claims being made when those loans turned bad.
    
    Given the magnitude of payouts if a major bank went bust, government mediated insurance may not be an all bad idea.

  The trouble with such schemes is it will encourage banks to take more risk with customers’ money knowing that nanny state will bail customers out – this is called ‘moral hazard’.
  By the way has IRD put a tax inspector on the job to ensure ANZ is paying fringe benefit tax on wine cellar payments and a house sold for a low ball price.

  Garner is just an unthinking blowhard. There’s nothing wrong with exceptions for vehicles that are not moving, because people can leave or open a door, or when the person under 18 is the smoker, because being exposed to passive smoking is hardly their biggest problem in that case.

I see the PM on the AM show trying to cover the fact that smoking in cars is banned (if under 18yr olds are in the car) but if you live in your car it’s fine…I would have asked her how many people are living in cars Jacinda? You seemed to have the numbers almost daily, certainly weekly in lead up to the last election, what is the number now after a year and a half of you in charge, or is this another ‘target’ you have dropped that will make you look like a hypocrite?!

      The crisis on the Border sure is a major problem with gangs now deliberatly using children to get access to the US.
      Around 140,000 people a month are coming across. They can’t cope.
      Of course this has all increased since the Dems got control of Congress. They could easily change the Law regarding repatriation to remove the incentive but they won’t do it.
      So the blood is on their hands.
      Trumps deal with Mexico seems to help but really the Law needs to change so illegals get sent back immediately.
      Pretty bad situation but no, it’s not concentration camps as most would view the expression. Iirc it costs around Eight hundred a night to house them.

        No, but the situation at the US southern border does require addressing. Over 100,000 people a month are attempting to cross it into the USA and under the law as it stands they can’t simply be expelled if they do cross the border. The choices are to put them somewhere under control like an ex-army camp (BTW just like Obama did, when apparently it wasn’t a problem) or simply to let them come in as they will. Could the US cope with the millions who would come if they could just walk in and get welfare, medical care (see California’s recent announcement re “free” Medicaid to all illegals).
        
        This is continuing because the Democrats hate the USA and they hate Donald Trump and so are prepared to destroy their nation in order to satisfy their petulant whims.
        
        The solutions would seem fairly obvious; build a wall as fast as possible, deport anyone illegal and make anyone wishing for asylum apply at an embassy in their country or if they insist on illegally crossing the border, to be interned until their status is determined. The wall is going up but not fast enough, and the many millions already in the country cannot easily be expelled.
        
        This will be a millstone around the Democrats neck at the next election except for places like California and other “blue” states where the illegals will be enrolled and enabled to vote in sufficient numbers to compensate for the loss of actual legal citizen voters.

        The thing I find surprising is that there is prima-facie more than enough evidence of immigration fraud to warrant official investigation: That she was living with her children’s father the whole time she was married to her brother, that she perjured herself about not seeing him since 2011 when there are social media logs of them chatting in 2013 and photos of them together in 2014, that school records suggest they are siblings, that he calls her kids nieces and nephews, and they call him uncle.
        
        Yet still no official investigation. More evidence of two-tier justice system. One for little people/non democrats and one for the connected?

      Snopes being in the tank for Democrats rather invalidates any conclusion they may come to – the evidence that IO did in fact “marry” her brother and lied about it in statutory declarations seems pretty clear. She also claims not to have been able to contact him despite the fact that the person has an active facebook page under his own name, and is in business with IO’s sister in Nairobi, Kenya.
      
      Also, that IO claimed tax rebates on two “partnerships” simultaneously does tend to imply illegality.
      
      But she’s a Democrat, so different rules apply – the MSM may NOT report on these facts (except to disparage anyone making them) and the falsity of any accusations must be assumed from the start.

RNZ and Louisa Wall do another hit job on the Folau’s.

This time questioning Wall (a former Silver Fern netballer) as to whether Maria Folau is “guilty by association”.

In the words of Wall she is, because she is the wife of Folau, but it is “ok for Maria to play for the Silver Ferns”, because Netball NZ have not spelt out protocols to Maria as to what she can and cannot say.

This was after Wall had been questioned about the closing of the “Go Fundme” page. Once again there was a heavy dose of hypocrisy from Wall, about how Folau was using it to defend his homophobic rants. For the benefit of Wall and others in the world of alphabet soup, no it is not!

Louisa Wall and others in the modern PC world, confirm Wayne Mapp’s views as posted in uesterday’s GD. Democracy and free speech face a new threat of this PC group think and denying people the right to express opinions that are counter to the person claiming that such views are hatred and must be stopped.

What is frightening is the levels of hypocrisy that such people resort to, to support their arguments.

  But artemisia @ 8.26 am this could be the start of something big. Especially as only 4.3% of the two stores are union members which raises questions about the ERA workings. Interesting the unions only singled out just 2 stores in such a region like this after artificially increased minimum wages have yet to effect employment levels.   If the top 11 can only build 5,000 homes in a year, where on earth did Labour think that they were going to get the workers to add an extra 10,000 per year over and above what the private sector was building?
  
  And a point not mentioned –
  Of average values for the top 11 home building companies, year ending April 2019, only two ($410,162 and $402,466) were above $400,000.

  Unfortunately we have no mechanism for a punishing a failed incompetent or recklessly self promoted politician. MMP takes away public scrutiny of many: a general election for all gives the voters scrutiny.
  
  Representation is not sufficient for governance: if we don’t select from the capable we are left with the incapable. Government is not solely about ideas but means execution of providing for an orderly society. It’s flavour is an extra not the meal.
  
  Hence ideologue politicians as bullies. Their impractical views require enforcing. Execution may not be possible , like KiwiBuild, because the politicians and “advisors” are bereft of practical understandings and how everyone in society is mutually interdependent.

It is completely unacceptable that these machines do not have the same level of auditing of their designs, particularly the software, as vehicles do.

I do not know if design issues contributed to this incident, but there have been numerous incidents where the Lime scooters have misbehaved.

It is completely unacceptable to have unaudited software on the roads and footpaths.

Lime’s processes are broken and nowhere near up to scratch for the sort of device they are controlling.

And, yes, that is my professional opinion as someone with over 35 years of experience in this industry.

  There are flamingo scooters in Wellington now. My kids (age 9 and 11) tried them on the weekend. The scooters go at a decent speed so it was lots of fun. It was on the road but they got out of the way when cars came past. We have gone much too far down the track of trying to regulate voluntary risk taking.

  Twyford and his colleagues may have a vision but are hopelessly inadequate to flesh it out. The whole COL fails that way. Parliament is about successfully enabling life in NZ not just dreams or its destruction.

This morning I listened to an RNZ interview with Nick Smith.

The MP’s issues were the lack of consultation and cross-party dialogue over an electoral reform.
and the proposal to allow people to register and vote on the same day.

The reform – at Select Committee stage appears to be a done-deal.

The ‘tradition’ for electoral reform has been to have cross-party consultation. The current administration appear to be declining this, Andrew Little cites ‘Opposition’ blocking and slowing down the process as a problem for our democratic process.

The RNZ interviewer was (IMO) appalling. Antagonistic, interruptive, accusatory, provocative and clearly unsympathetic to the notion that, even if the concern and accusation of the Opposition was that the current administration might be ‘screwing the scrum’ that the politician raising the concern should not be ‘allowed’ to question that.

The interviewer took an issue of serious constitutional import, and belittled it apparently on the basis that he took exception to the notion that our current administration and elected representatives should be afforded the same kinds of scrutiny and accountability that has been the convention for perhaps forty years prior.

“Hasn’t National ever engaged in Gerrymandering?” was a direct question posed, I suppose, designed to qualify as investigative or ‘searching’ enquiry.

A better question might have been: “What previously has stopped National from Gerrymandering?” and the answer might then have been, correct, impartial and transparent airing of points in committee.

Regarding being able to enrol and vote on the same day (i.e. election day), the correct line of questioning might have included “Is it feasible that an administration in power might use its position to announce a ‘lolly-scramble at the twelfth hour and thereby encourage otherwise apathetic voters to vote, purely on self-interest, with no time to consider/debate the implications?”

I get it. RNZ is government funded.
I get it, journalists might not ‘like’ National.

What I don’t get is how eager some are to dilute our constitutional protections simply to forward a narrow ideological bias, and how emboldened they are to feel they can do this without any pretence of objectivity.

It would seem Maori is so little used that Google does not have a user-built reference bank (“Can you improve this translation?”) for Maori. That is the balls up.

I don’t see it in our media, but an interesting item in the Geek world is the arrival of the latest version of the tiny Raspberry Pi computer, this time the Raspberry Pi 4. In fact it’s started the 4 series as the Pi 4B.

About 15 million of these tiny computers have been sold, making it the top selling British computer ever.

It’s cheap (you can buy the base, bare-bone Raspberry Pi 3B+ in NZ for around $60. This is the model ahead of the 4B).

These tiny computers are great for adult geeks as well as for kids. Your children or grandchildren likely may either have one or know kids who do have them.

The Raspberry Pi series an excellent technology-education tool. It can be used in great projects as varied as learning to code, creating web sites, or controlling a robot.

For Kiwiblog geeks: the 4B has up to 4Gb of RAM and USB 3.1. You could happily use it to edit Kiwiblog.

If you know folk with or interested in this great little machine, tell them the Model 4 is out, and Geeks are abuzz about it on Youtube.

  I have been using the PI 3B+ with a plug in USB disk as a video server at home. The new PI 4 is a big upgrade and amazing for the price. Someone made the comparison that the old BBC micro cost about 350 pounds back in the day.

  I use rPi for all sorts of things. Most notably for energy monitoring and automation at the bach, and as an IoT gateway* in central Auckland.
  
  Just for fun I installed Fedora (which is my desktop OS of choice) on rPi 3B+ to see how it would go and I tell you what, it was not far off adequate.
  
  So I’m looking at the rPi 4 series as a potential workstation replacement. I’m pretty sure it will have enough performance even before I compile a bespoke kernel.
  
  The only downside is going to be shifting virtualisation loads to another device as the rPi definitely won’t be up to that. I run a Micros~1 instance to host apps like Sparx EA and Visio on VirtualBox on my workstation, this will have to move over to the NAS.

    We have been a Linux household for years. PCLinuxOS in its variants is OK for almost anyone. The family use it on hand me down computers. Fedora is big league by comparison.
    
    Another, MX-18, is very compact and fast. It has an excellent toolbox and I have thrown out Windows 10 for it and use MX-18 with Win 7 Pro in VirtualBox on this cheap laptop.
    All the software you’re likely to want, except specialist gaming, free.
    
    Looking forward to getting a RP.

      Kev it sounds like you’re living mostly in the world of X11 and minimalist windowing environments.
      
      If your hardware supports it, move over to Wayland: it’s come a long way, the performance over X is huge and the resource utilisation a lot less.
      
      With a cursory read of the rPi 4B I can’t tell if it supports Wayland out of the box. I remember a few years ago Weston dropped rPi as a backend (“who cares? No-one will use rPi as a desktop anyway”) but now that it’s viable, it should.

Interesting finding about Google and how absolutely partisan they are.

Try entering “Hillary Clinton’s Email” into search – and you get no suggestions (as you normally do) – nothing at all is suggested. Type the same into DuckDuckGo (or your other search engine of choice) and you get a whole list of suggested completed search terms.

So Google is now covering up for Clinton – and according to Project Veritas, they intend to apply the same sort of skew during the 2020 elections to help prevent the re-election of Donal Trump.

That surely removes their statutory protection from being sued as a publisher only – by displaying bias and partisanship they will be fair game for all and sundry to sue.

Further to earlier post it seem TVNZ yesterday got the announcement wrong – no surprise there – the schemes outline explanation courtesy of Interest >Co follows-
The proposal is for the regime to include a limit of between $30,000 and $50,000. This means someone with a $70,000 deposit in a bank that runs into trouble would get up to $50,000 back.

If they had a $50,000 deposit with Bank A and a $50,000 deposit with Bank B, and both banks went under, they would get $50,000 back from each bank, so $100,000 in total. But if they had $100,000 with Bank A, they would only get $50,000 back.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson said the proposed limit would cover 90% of individual bank deposits and 40% of funds in bank deposits in New Zealand.

Who pays?

Overall a rare uptick for this Govt, devil will be in the detail however!

I see the organisation formerly known as cyfs is under fire for removing babies from dangerous environments. I think they should be under investigation for not removing more at-risk babies…

This is a tragically sad and horrific story, where a mother tortured her children such that one of them committed suicide.

Given the facts and lead-up of the case, why on earth didn’t the state intervene earlier? I hate that these children were put through this.

A Taranaki woman has been jailed for having “psychologically butchered” her three young daughters.

In New Plymouth District Court today, the 35-year-old was sentenced to four years and three months in prison over three counts each of cruelty to a child, assaulting a child and neglect.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, sobbed loudly as the court heard how she’d abused her girls, at times calling them “sluts”, “whores”, “fat bitches” and “nothing but meat on the ground”.

The abuse also included kicking and punching them, and pulling their hair – which left them with bruises about their bodies – and threatening them over reporting anything to police or Oranga Tamariki.

Court documents showed the abuse stretched six and a half years between March 2011, when the girls were aged 6, 5 and 3, to June 2017, when the eldest sibling died by a suspected suicide and the other two were removed from their mother’s care.

ANZ Bank New Zealand is risking shooting itself in the foot by apparently indicating to, or even perhaps warning, Netball New Zealand, reservations about Maria Folau in regard to HER HUSBAND’S row with Rugby Australia over his views on homosexuality.

ANZ Bank New Zealand needs public friends in New Zealand while it in a horns-locked battle with the Reserve Bank of NZ.

Many of those who have defended the bank are either conservative or conservative-Christian, and will likely turn on the bank if it picks on Maria Folau. That also applies to many of its business customers.

The ANZ Bank of NZ ought to keep its nose out of this matter. There’s no winning return for it, and quite a bit to lose.

The Leftist media is repeating ad nauseum old Kerry McDonald’s call for John Key to stand down over the capitalisation reporting issue … and the bank is seeking to join the Folau row? Un-bloody-believable.
