I just read a great piece of first-class journalism on front page of DomPost Weekend: head girl of St Catherine’s College complaining about a city councilor telling her that he’d been involved in transport governance since before she was “even a twinkle”. Outrageous!

She hit back that it was “a bit crap to talk down to me” and that her opinion is as valid as “white baby boomers”. The teachers at her elitist school, and maybe her parent(s), have apparently indoctrinated her with a great sense of entitlement…but not so hot on hypocrisy, racism, ageism etc etc. She should be grateful it wasn’t Speaker Trev Mallard calling her a “silly little girl” then she’d really have something to bitch and moan about.

Why is the DomPost dying a long slow death when it’s giving us front-page breaking news of this calibre? And why is the Labour/NZFirst government not paying the teachers whatever they’re demanding, when they’re doing such a great job “educating” the children our parents entrust to them? (…well at least the parents who can afford to send their kids to St Catherine’s).

  I don’t think you would find many posh kids at St Caths.
  
  St Catherine’s is a lower-decile, small, integrated secondary school for Girls in Kilbirnie.
  Its catchment is from the poorer suburbs of Southern Wellington – Lyall Bay, Miramar, Kilbirnie, Newtown.
  The higher decile integrated Girls College in Wellington is St Mary’s.

  Sickeningly entitled, know-all youth being given oxygen and air time is a huge problem with potential enormous repercussions for society.   Students are encouraged to have views and opinions – but not respect.
  Having said that, the Councillor should have had more maturity than to dismiss this student’s opinion by trying to belittle her.
  Reminds me of the time, many years ago, when as a journalism student we visited Parliament and were granted an audience with Keith Holyoake. One of our number asked a question which was laughed at and completely rubbished by the great man and the young questioner was very embarrassed ?
  It was never forgotten by that group of future reporters, editors and TV journos.

    Agree. I think they deserve each other – a semi-rude passive-aggressive question too broad to answer and a semi-rude reply.
    
    With a question like that, she didn’t deserve to be treated like and adult. And she needs to realise that adult discussions aren’t as preciously careful as the teachers at school. Adults tend to be forthright and to forego care for feelings to some extent. I hope both parties have the decency to be embarrassed, but I suspect not.

  As a travelling man, I always used, “I was in Baghdad before you were in your Dads bag.”
  Fortunately, I worked most of my life not surrounded by young generation know it alls.
  The only real exception was Car controller for Budget Rentals in Auckland, I was the great Granddady in my early forties. I always thought Bob had a employment requirement of being young, female, a minimum D Cup. He was a trailblazer really, he had alot more women employed than men.
  When he jetted in from Aussie, it was a requirement of management to have the biggest cup attractive personell to hand over the keys.
  The other laugh I used to get was in Rotorua, Winston used to jet in every week and take a car to Tauranga. He was a pain in the arse, he obviously couldn’t drive a manual, and I used to spend serious money at times satisfying his needs.
  One week I bought a spare automatic from Wellington to do the short trip to Tauranga.
  I am sure he is much more aware of CO2 and its consequences these days.
  Rotorua was always exciting, back windows shot out, big bags of hootch left in the boot, never a dull moment.

  I was actually pleased to read this report and excellent news that Calvi-Freeman is pissing the youth vote off as well. This was the twat who called 111 over a road cone protest on the Island Bay cycleway and also called for tooting in the Mt Vic tunnel to be banned. The man is already at the bottom of my preference list in November the more people he upsets the better.

Trump Triumphs again- despite Nasty Pelosi and her nest of Democratic Vipers supported by MSM and some dubiously impartial Judges Trump is solving the Mass invasion through Mexico without spending a $, how you ask? Simple threaten Mexico with a 5% tariff on all Mexican exports to US increasing by another 5% a month until Mexico stops the traffic, result Mexico’s president asks for urgent meeting and then takes action to stop the invasion and Trump removes tariffs. Thats how you get things done Nancy and no money spent.

    Tariffs will put the price of certain goods (cars mainly) up… those goods will be less attractive..and the longer that goes on the more likely that factories in Mexico will shut.
    
    If a factory in Mexico shuts there will be more than a few states in the good ole USA that would love to have it open again making cars in America for Americans.

    The problem in Australia is that traditionally these polls were alot more accurate when everyone had a landline, as they have disappeared, so has accuracy.
    Some polls are alot worse than others, of course if youare a completely left leaning body like the ABC, the voting will be reflected in this.
    One thing that has never disappeared in Australian politics, if you get 40% plus primary vote, you are over the line.

Govt criticised for silence on Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary
The Government’s lack of progress on the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary proposal is embarrassing, the former minister for Environment has said on World Oceans Day.
“Our message today on World Oceans Day is that we need to get on and create this huge reserve because New Zealand needs to make a contribution to protecting Oceans globally”.
The World Wildlife Fund also agrees that giving the sanctuary the go ahead is long overdue, but conservation organisations are completely in the dark about what is happening with the proposal. [1]

It seems Winston’s New Zealand First has pulled the plug on it.
The Party which won only 7.2% last Election – polling maybe about half that now – but selected the Government and calls the more important shots.
• Eleventh hour striking out of Andrew Little’s 3 Strikes law changes
• Destruction of the Capital Gains Tax – Shane Jone’s boast
• Kermadec sanctuary sunk, purportedly at the behest of NZ First’s fishing sponsors

Even when an issue is nothing to do with Winston, he must be first –
He said the information obtained by National had been acquired illegally.
Asked if he had seen evidence which proved this, Peters said: “Of course”.
When pressed on how he knew, Peters said it was “my job to know”. [2]

Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary put on ice by NZ First, catching Greens unaware
New Zealand’s biggest ocean sanctuary is dead in the water, in a Winston Peters deal that has blindsided the Greens.
The 620,000 sq km Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary, announced by John Key at the United Nations in 2015, was hailed around the world and passed its first reading in Parliament unopposed.
But fishing companies and iwi bodies filed legal action opposing it, saying the sanctuary would deny them fishing rights agreed in Treaty settlements.
NZ First, whose senior MPs are close to the fishing industry and whose campaign was partly bankrolled by players in the fishing industry, demanded Labour stop the sanctuary. – stuff, October 22 2017 [3]

    I down ticked on the assumption this was not sarcastic – if I am mistaken then I apologize. Winston only opposed this right at the last moment and could have put this to bed as soon as it was proposed instead of causing Kiwis angst about CGT. That Mr 7% could do that was only due to National’s resistance to the CGT from the start, otherwise he would not have a pot to piss in.

    It has always intrigued me, whats the use of 70 virgins if you have blown yourself into a zillion pieces along with the targeted non believers.
    If your member and swingers have been sent a hundred metres down the road, in separate directions.
    The other obvious question you would ask, how is it you morph all of sudden, to be a wholesome shag machine to take on the 70 virgins.
    I need alot more convincing this is a sound strategy.

        Does that mean if your soul enters Jannah as a female, you become a virgin and are betrothed Jannah style to whom is decided for you. Very similar to here down on earth in certain religions.
        Sorry Maggy, I am not convinced that this statement could ever be quantified beyond doubt.
        How can you have a ratio of 70:1 entering Jannah, this is surely an impossible statistic, or are the virgins just created out of thin air.
        This statement is pure fantasy if it cannot be logically argued.
        Bit like Catholics annulling a marriage, it is just a loophole to get round the churches rules, can you have a dozen annulments, I have an ex brother in law with three and counting.
        I guess it is the old rule, don’t believe everything you are told or read.

      The first construction – a macrocarpa whare – was built when Michael Fowler was Mayor…and may not have satisfied building requirements, but I’m pretty sure the main construction that just burnt down was well up-to-code.
      (basically it had to be as it catered for groups for stayed overnights).

Here’s an idea. Instead of raising the minimum wage, how about our government look at ways to reduce the cost of living. The first place to look is reduce the taxes on fuel. Starting reducing personal tax and put more money back in people’s pockets.

The money is there to do it. Get rid of the Shane Jones bribe fund. Get rid of the students free university bribe. Stop giving so much money overseas, it is a waste of money thinking if you give money to the islands it will keep china out.

  Are you currently in the work force? Are you currently employing anyone?
  
  As an employer, we pay well above industry rates which means we attract the cream of the crop.
  
  We have in the past employed those that were not. Why should we pay someone a decent wage when we are not getting a decent worker?
  
  Many that have never employed staff think as you do. Spend some time as an employer and you may see the problem.

I worked all my life including in my own business until my health packed it in. So yes personally and my family have owned several businesses were we employed people.

      The comment was directed at you because paying an extra $4.80 per hour is almost an extra $100 per week or $5,000 per year.
      
      If the worker is any good they will already be on the [ath to higher wages but suggesting that all workers, regardless of ability, are worth that extra is ludicrous.
      
      Until we manage to increase productivity we are destined to remain a low wage economy for unskilled workers with a poor attitude.

  The Treasury is on the record saying they the main benefits of the so-called living wage go to young single workers and the government coffers, including increased tax / reduced transfers for the latter.
  
  The Treasury also said a while back that only 6% of those potentially eligible for the living wage fitting the demographic it was based on.

  My answer to axe WFF, Corporate welfare and stupid spending then drop the company and personal tax rates in a significant way would solve those issues was just stupid.

  Had me at lower taxes, look at the USA, the minute they lowered taxes the economy jumped forward, unemployment fell (more people participating in the betterment of the country).
  Lost me at “living wage”, this just becomes the new Minimum wage and forces all wage costs to business’ up.
  My solution:
  Leave the dole where it is,
  push up pensions (as a reward for a lifetime spent building this country)
  Limit Working for families
  Limit other “emergency benefits” to REAL need.
  Streamline all govt. depts. There’s a lot of waste.
  Encourage, via tax incentives, people to “Go private” for health and education.
  Cancel the rediculous rail/public transport projects
  Cancel “…Shane Jones bribe fund. Get rid of the students free university bribe. Stop giving so much money overseas, it is a waste of money thinking if you give money to the islands it will keep china out.” as you say.
  Put ALL petrol/ RUC taxes into ROADS for the next 5 years. Then cancel all the petrol taxes.

  The “living wage” is a bit of a laugh. The number was derived by commissioning the Anglican Family Centre boffins. They got two “living wages”; one for Auckland and another for the rest of NZ. They chickened out on using the Auckland one which was about $6/hr more and the only one shown is the lower–Auckland loses out.

Why would politicians want to do that?

The objective of politics in NZ is to rake in as much tax as possible because you can then use that tax money to bribe voters at election time which hopefully keeps you at the big trough

Cutting the cost of living runs completely counter to that methodology.

  The man in the first link (former Palestinian refugee), according to the link, has made several decisions that he seems to now regret. Like leaving his $53 pw rental to live in his van.
  
  It would not be uncommon for refugees to have trouble settling in, and perhaps wider issues as well, not helped by being / feeling isolated. Not just refugees of course, plenty of NZ born in the same situation, but I did think refugees could access services fairly readily and inexpensively.

In Christchurch, the city’s public library network, besides books, has for use sewing machines and overlockers. You can also play with giant jigsaws, and fiddle with an electronic wall board.

Presumably much the same is happening in public libraries throughout the country.

A Telegraph article (outside the paywall) says that American libraries, which have stuck to providing books, are used far more than British libraries. A book industry veteran is reported as saying Britain’s schools are obsessed with with being “rigged out” with the latest technology and trendy activities.

        It’s almost impossible to change the mind of someone who thinks people like Roger Pielke, Roy Spencer, Joanne Nova, Richard Lindzen, Anthony Watts, etc have any actual contribution to make to the scientific understanding of climate change.
        It’s fairly well established now that for most people who think these frauds have any credibility, exposure to factual information will actually have the perverse effect of reinforcing their erroneous opinions.
        Trying to persuade these folks to change their minds is a waste of time: normal, rational people just need to get on with the actions needed.

A couple of polls are due to come out tonight if my memory serves me right. There’s no way Labour and its support partners should get a boost in the polls, but somehow I think they will. Look for Collins to be ahead of Bridges in the preferred PM ratings and for Nationals numbers to start with a 3. Anyone with at least half a brain knows if an election was held tomorrow those numbers would be bullshit, but like Goff, Shearer and Cunliffe, our MSM are after Bridges blood and a bit of spicy news for the next month or two, so facts in reality dont matter.
