  Hon GERRY BROWNLEE (National—Ilam): Can the shadow Leader of the House give us some indication as to whether the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister will be available during question time next week—perhaps also an indication if there is any celebration planned for their return to the country?
  
  Brownlee normally has the subtlety of a raging bull, but this was a clever reminder that neither the PM or Deputy PM had fronted at all this week to answer questions in the House. It was the second week back after a three-week recess, and of course the House will again be in recess after next week’s sitting. That however may not have coincided with the Prime Minister’s birthday.
  
  Anyway, good on National for getting the “part-time PM” message out there.

    Cheers – and I know that with modern care and so forth prognosis is better than ever but …..I remember when my best friend was killed nearly thirty years ago his then elderly father saying that a father should not outlive his children. It has stuck with me ever since.

      My oldest daughter was diagnosed with a heart condition as a five year old – it was already too late for treatment. They said she might make her mid to late teens. She’s just turned 38, regularly works 50-60 hour weeks, and travels the world, so I firmly believe that where there’s life, there’s hope. Thoughts with you, Wangas Feral.

  My belief is that extending sympathy is a wasted emotion that only makes the giver feel better.
  Empathy however.
  My wife has PAH (pulmonary arterial hypertension)
  and CHF (congestive heart failure)
  I do know exactly how you are feeling.
  In February, they gave her 6 months/1 yr, maybe 2yrs to live.
  Found out yesterday, she is stage 4 and the only drugs available are either only for stage one or NOT FUNDED.
  She had a pretty shitty night last night.

  I have a friend whose son was born with a heart condition. The docs didn’t expect him to see out the month.
  When he was 3 months old they sent him home on palliative care, warning my friend and his wife that he would not see 6 months.
  He’s just turned 8 years old. He has had many heart surgeries, and will have more.
  
  Don’t give up on hope. And cherish each day with your son as a miracle that you still have him with you.

Wellington vegan cafe Sweet Release has shared a woman’s shocking outburst against their meat-free menu.

The video, posted to Twitter, starts after an elderly woman walked into the bakery and allegedly began abusing staff.

Sweet Release owner Kristine Bartley claimed online that the woman racially abused her: “This lady opened our door, came in yelling about deficiencies, called us ‘vaygun’ f***wits, I let her rant a bit more then she called me an Asian f***wit and I asked her to leave.

She refused, using the words f***wits again and muttering s*** about me being a foreigner and how I should ‘go home’.”

The video shows the woman later admitting to using the f-word but denying that it is abuse, saying instead that staff should expect it because they are not receiving enough tryptophans from their food….”

Those who choose to eat unhealthy food can’t be bothered to cook healthy food, and a 10% increase in the price isn’t going to stop them? It will just be added to their WINZ account.

    Two years ago I decided to establish a little vegetable garden. I was clueless. So I googled “vegetable gardens for dummies”. Now I have a vegetable garden.
    
    You can buy a beef brisket and in season vegetables and feed a family of four for 15 dollars. But I reckon less than ten percent of people know how to do it.

      true, actual vegetable gardening is hard. Weeds and pests are a total nightmare. We have rabbits and Pokekos, both are fatal to young shoots!

        My .22 is a shock for those.
        
        First morning we woke up here there were well over 20 rabbits on the lawn. A few months of dedicated action has seen that population removed and I would probably less than 10 over the months after breeding season.
        
        It is a daily action though and my total of magpies over the past 12 months exceeds 350.

  I am struggling to recall a government which has, through their deliberate policy settings, done more to ensure large increases in the cost of living for NZers.
  
  Economics 101 – there is no such thing as a free lunch.
  
  All these initiatives Labour and the Greens have brought and continue to bring in to solve transport, housing, obesity etc etc aren’t ‘solutions’ at all – they are merely compromises, all of which bring a cost.
  
  A cost which generally ultimately falls on those who are least able to pay and/or will be hurt the most.

    I tried explaining that to a teacher last week that her pay rise had to come from somewhere and her extra spending will have a downstream impact.
    
    “Don’t care, I love jacinda because she gave me more money” was the reply.

        We’re pretty lucky in that, apart from the odd chicken, all our meat is “homekill” and over the summer we get a lot of our our garden produce.
        
        The supermarket shop this week was $40 as we bought the wine and extras last week but that shop was also well under $200.

    And the case taken by the three health professionals against Cam Slater, Katherine Rich and Food and Grocery Council etc carries on. On the surface the professionals appear to be flogging a dead horse with respect to Cam and his lawyer has been trying to withdraw, but the judge will not let him. On the surface, Cam is not worth suing, but the professionals want discovery of emails etc presumably to show other defendants paid Whaleoil to run hit articles against them.
    The judge is skeptical of the medical certificates presented and has ordered Cam to front up in court.
    This is probably one of the major reasons the Whaleoil site is being abandoned.

    Bought our groceries a few weeks ago and the woman in front purchased some cigarettes which then holds up the queue as they are removed from the “safe” somewhere in another building I think.
    
    We had a big grocery shop with a few beers and wines thrown in and at the end the checkout woman said… “your whole grocery bill is less than the cost of the cigarettes that woman bought”……
    
    The cost for the fags, $249 ish. So, tax does not work, she just threw a little less coke, chippies and white bread in the trolley for the kids. No problem around here these days as most of the schools feed the kids breakfast and lunches most of the time…. and provide shoes and jumpers.

  Information that helped poor families to budget and live healthily on cheap, readily available produce.
  
  Perhaps the experts of today lack the ability to rustle up a filling soup from yesterday’s left-overs.

        But J lets not forget lamb shanks boiled to make a great base for vege soup then the tender meat is removed to make potted meat that can be sliced. Served with home made pickled onions along with a slice or two of cheese which is likely the most expensive ingredient.       I see neck chops all over the place, even the supermarkets. But, if not, just ask your local butcher and he/she’ll get it in.
      
      Honestly, do try them, slow-cooked with veg. I’ve done them for thirty years, and kids just hoover them up. Still quite economical, while I agree that ox-tail and lamb shank prices have shot through the roof.

In her usual half laughing, patronising manner that she takes for Hosking (she sounds a bit more respectful sometimes on Red Radio, but does generally have patronising half laugh at hand when she doesn’t like a question), she said that low or even negative interest rates were a good thing, because of lower house prices.
  
  She also said some of other countries we look to as similar or something like that, (presumably including Denmark?) have negative interest rates and claimed that some people say this is is actually the normal state of things.
  
  In other words: the Internationale-singing socialist doesn’t like capitalism and doesn’t think your savings should be worth anything.

  As I’ve said a few times, anyone who requires hospital treatment and is obese should be billed for a percentage of the cost.
  
  This is the right way to do it because:
  
  1) Active people who burn off calories by exercising will not have to pay
  
  2) Responsible people will not have to subsidise the irresponsible as much as they do now.
  
  3) Nobody will need to decide which foods are ‘good’ and which are ‘bad’.

You may have in mind specific sports, but if you’re alluding to the likes of rugby, football, pole-vaulting and a host of other active sports where injuries are to be expected sometimes, then I think that incurring some injuries may be better all round than “lying on the couch”.

  This is an unfair comment on Kiwibank. The Greens previously indicated that Kiwibank instead of Westpac should do Government banking). Kiwibank management quite responsibly and candidly stated that Kiwibank did not have the depth or capability to handle Government banking.
  Kiwibank’s growth prospects are limited by the amount of capital the Government is prepared to put into it, this particularly affects the total amount of lending that Kiwibank is capable of.

Any transgressions found were considered to be minor and inconsequential – eg. receiving National membership fees at an electoral office.     You are probably a victim of Erlang’s law (used by telephone engineers to ‘size’ telephone exchanges particularly in the days of electromechanical equipment). This calculates the probability of occurrences of simultaneous phone calls.
    Assume that 10 sultanas is intended for each serving and the batch is made up for a thousand servings ie 10000 sultanas and the batch is properly mixed before bagging. On average you would expect 10 sultanas per serving, but in reality there could be more or less. Hence there is a small probability that your serving could have only three sultanas, and there would be a small probability someone gets 17 sultanas.
    People similarly complained about the erratic number of cherries in a tin of Wattie’s fruit salad.

I look at the betting odds and have noticed an unusual trend in candidates. Harris has dropped from second favourite for the presidency down to fourth. Joe Biden has shortened appreciably in the betting market. Trump, whose odds had been steadily shortening, right down to even money, has lost just a bit of his mana and the odds increased just a little.
Okay, I know the betting markets got Scomo, Brexit and November 2016 wrong, but the trend the markets show is interesting.

Sue Chetwin reminds everyone that the Government announced the investigation in December 2018 after a volatile six months in the petrol market, and anticipates Commerce Commission market study may be reported back soon.

If a petrol company can give away the product free, they obviously have to recoup the fixed costs – ETS, regional fuel tax, ordinary tax and GST, produce imported costs transport, staff payments and petrol station costs – somewhere else in their system, so does that emphasise that we are indeed being fleeced that such slop in the system is not apparent?

Or is it sheer volume: that 1 hour free at two stations may have cost $70,000 but that is recouped by a one cent extra everywhere else for perhaps a day?

But even with that complexity, that leeway must surely be within what is the petrol companies’ margin, so how can the price make-up of a litre of petrol be that complex as to take eight months already in analysing it and still have not reported back?

Are Commerce Commission staff taking the PM’s lead on this and only working part-time on it?

  If I wanted to set up a fuel company charging $15.72 a litre surely that is my business?
  Otherwise the only real solution is the govt being the sole fuel provider and that would be a massive cluster fuck.
