  A General Election will shatter Labour and Lib Dems and let The Brexit party hold the balance of power which would make a no deal or one that is favourable to the UK a certaint. The Brussels Kommissars will be shitting themselves with Germany in recession, Deutsche Bank on the verge of Bankruptcy, France in turmoil and Italy kicking over the EU financial traces.   More to the point will Britain survive its collective stupidity. They got themselves yoked to their traditional enemies and expect to be loved when they now seek to flee from foreign bureaucrats control.
  
  The two worlds are vastly different: the Brits developed the Magna Carta enshrining freedom as a right. Europe had Roman law as its base–rule bound. Irreconcilable value systems.
  
  The break won’t be easy but the Brits have to accept that they cannot live in their current state of tizz. The quicker they break the bonds the easier it will be. Europe has need for commerce too so will soon seek to re-establish practical relations.
  
  I wish them all well in a successful transition. Boris has got his work cut out managing a majority but he’s more able than most.

  I think given the issues within the Conservative Party MPs (ie the divide over Brexit) I do not think the situation for Boris has changed much. A one seat majority or a two seat one —the situation is still much the same.
  There appears to be a little “bad blood” between Boris and Farage for some reason. Boris is going to have to get over it really quickly if he wants to get out of the mess and still remain PM.

  I think Boris will ultimately be fine. Even with lack of immediate Brexit causing a snap election. Right now he cannot cosy up to Nigel Farage as it creates too much leadership threat for him personally in a potential coalition. But when push comes to shove an electorally successful Brexit party has to deliver Brexit even more than the Torys.
  So ultimately Farage would take the Brexit Minister role under Boris and the Conservative-Brexit coalition government will easily push through an outcome. As it would essentially be a single issue ‘party’ once that issue is resolved it will pave the way for the Brexit Party to fold under the conservatives. Boris will have the option of disbanding the Brexit Minister position and then he needs to decide what senior cabinet posts to give to some Brexit party leaders and bam the outcome is the strongest Nationalist Conservatives in the history of the party.
  
  The majority voted for Brexit, and a big chunk of the minority who didn’t now support Brexit due to a belief in democracy. I cannot see any of the Party’s who are supporting another Brexit referendum with Remain as their preference not being heavily punished.
  Boris and the current government have sole choice on running a new election with no Brexit referendum in parallel. And he has stronger chance of partially swaying Remainer London than any previous sitting PM.

Ardern could make a quite large and rather costly mistake with her knee-jerk off-the-cuff approach to some issues – water tax, gas and oil exploration [3], capital gains tax, and gun laws, for example.

To favour the Ihumātao protestors / protectors, after paying Fletchers back their $19 million plus costs, would Ardern still also owe Ihumātao elders 40 houses – and all New Zealand knows how hard they are to knock out?

        Yes can confirm ,their are large-huge reserves of Gas in particular which have been identified and were banked as future prospective developments.
        
        One friend told me personally that their Trucking business has released 40 drivers going forward on work not being contracted because of Arderns captains call.
        
        In short we have low gas supply at present and have thrown all development out of known future supply.

    But it was backed by Winston, who insisted the Coalition Agreement include record a Cabinet minute regarding the lack of process followed in the National-led government’s sponsorship of UN Security Council Resolution 2334, because it – like the initial gas ban – was not passed through Cabinet.
    
    And that the rush involved in the decision was partly to virtual signal to Marcon of France, a country which has to import 95% of its natural gas and would probably desperately like to have its own resources and likely found her stupidity highly insulting, mais ils étaient trop polis pour le dire.
    
    And now they are trying to resurrect the Taranaki energy industry by investigating hydrogen production from water, using electricity, while the rest of the world makes it from natural gas, which in Taranaki may be just under their feet, or a few km out to sea.

        To produce hydrogen from water using electricity, which Winston in particular seems to support, when it appears that if 10% of New Zealand’s cars convert to electric, new generation will be required equivalent to 3.25 Benmore Dams.

        People will flock to electric cars when the value proposition is there. MBIE is predicting about half of cars will be electric by 2040. Not sure if that is sales or the fleet. The former is totally plausible. Not sure about the latter.
        
        I am sure I have missed it but I don’t recall a good analysis of the generation capacity we will need for a mostly electric car fleet. Folk in the industry must know. But when the Greens promote electric vehicles they never talk about generation. If current cars consume x petajoules of energy from petroleum future cars will require the same number of petajoules from electricity. Basic physics. Petroleum is a miracle fuel. Lots of petajoules to generate with wind and solar. Get it wrong and the lights go out.

Green Party conference in Dunedin today. I hear on the radio this morning that all attendees must have pre-approval to speak to the media. Sounds suspicious, but unsurprising. Good ideas should not require a media embargo. Therefore, we can infer there will be no good ideas being bandied about.

    The over-arching issue that the Green Party needs to consider is what dealings it should have (if any) with National. Current policy is zilch dealings. This is a decision that would have to be taken at its conference and if on the table one that could split the party. This is possibly why there is a high level of sensitivity on the part of the party.

  So the Greens will not tolerate the sort of behaviour at their conference which they inflicted on a National Party conference some years back.
  A few Green Party people ‘gatecrashed’ the conference (security was rather laid back) and asked MP’s questions with voice recorders running including asking Bill English about the future of Kiwibank. One also asked Nick Smith an environmental question but Nick smelt a rat and clammed up.

Blatant misleading headline on Stuff.

‘Killer in alleged napalm attack’ is the headline on the front page.

Then you click on headline and you get this:

‘Coral-Ellen Burrows’ killer in alleged ‘prison napalm’ attack’.

Then you read the story and you see ‘The combination of boiling water and sugar is known as “prison napalm” because the sugar makes the water stick to the skin for longer, maximising burn time.’

I guess a headline of ‘Killer in alleged sugar syrup attack’ just doesn’t have the same cachet these days.

There are two HUGE political problems with respect to the Peter Ellis case.

1) It mocks the Judiciary.
2) It mocks the SISTERHOOD.

Really and truly! These “Great Minds” in a MODERN SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY could STILL believe in FAIRY STORIES made up by fucken CHILDREN!!!

Well, babies more like it. After all, there were apparently nappy-changing dramas!

It makes the Chief Justice of New Zealand look like an utter twat!!!

    I only arrived after the event. So I can say not guilty, but quite a few New Zealanders do have a bit of soul searching to do having allowed this travesty of justice to fester for so long. (especially those involved in the trial). And although I technically support the Death Sentence, it is this that gives me pause….

    Maggy is right, we all – or nearly all apart from Ellis’s stoic Mum, his fellow workers, and the small band of supporters – were taken in.
    
    Martin van Beynen apparently reported through the case and became a leading sceptic on it, but does anyone recall details of tunnels, kids in cages, Freemasons being reported in early days of the trial? Or did we ignore them, having jumped to judgement on the headlines about the first day of the case?
    
    However, none of us were suckered in so completely as the police and the judicial system.
    
    A lesson is that we are wrong to be uncritical and inflexible when it comes to views of experts – in the Ellis case a psychiatrist, and, or psychologists.

A tory, who is as mean as a pinch of cat’s excrement, wanted to put $200 on Simon Bridges at the next election. Having closely watched Jacinda’s cabinet fearlessly campaigning for Bridges over the past few weeks, I decided to decline the bet. I say campaigning for Bridges because by their collective idiocy they are doing Bridges more good than an expensive advertising effort ever could. I have detected a big swing in optimism amongst my tory mates, over the past two weeks.

Ive just read the Peter Ellis post from yesterday. Sadly we will continue to see such cases that is where those involved lack any kind of common sense.

I have little faith in what passes for a justice system in this country.

It is populated by people to whom common sense is but a distant stranger.

They lack any kind of attachment with reality. They are from another planet.

Until this changes and we get people with plain common sense nothing will change. Mark my words.

  Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
  
  Common Sense was preceded in death,
  
  -by his parents, Truth and Trust,
  -by his wife, Discretion,
  -by his daughter, Responsibility,
  -and by his son, Reason.
  
  He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;

There is no hiding from the clipboard wielding H&S czars, and the costs of providing full time security checking facilities now preclude suburban bank branches. Imagine, you are a bank manager and going about your legal business providing a local facility to your customers, when a lunatic with an irrational grievance steps in, shoots a few staff and customers, then YOU are charged with an offence. H&S rules demand you are accountable.

Muriel Newman gives a clear account of why Private Property has not been used in Treaty Settlements.

It’s section 6 of the 1975 Treaty of Waitangi Act that specifically excludes the use of private land to settle Treaty claims. The Hansard of Parliamentary debates explains that ‘private land is sacrosanct’: “Private citizens hold their tenure from the Crown, and they are entitled to look to the Crown to protect that right and that tenure. That right will now be enshrined in legislation for the protection of all private landowners in New Zealand…

“To put it simply, the Waitangi Tribunal will not have the jurisdiction to recommend that particular areas of privately owned land be acquired by the Crown for return to Maori claimants under the treaty settlement process.”

    We are talking about Jacinda Ardern agreeing to find a solution to a hapu claim over privately owned land.
    
    That’s a NEWBIE and is not within the framework of NZ legislation.
    
    We are also talking about Jacinda Ardern and her Ministers agreeing to negotiate with a subset of an Iwi that is in conflict with its elders….
    and that to me is a beauty.
    
    Young, educated Maori women are telling us that they don’t like the deals some of the older Maori chaps have negotiated with various Governments.
    
    And that’s the trouble when Governments negotiate with Tribal elites…..some poor buggas miss out on the trickle-down.
    
    Jacinda now has to appease:
    1.private landowners,
    2. the upholders of Maori tikanga, and
    3. young, educated Maori.
    
    Let’s see her work her fairy dust on this issue.

  Muriel Newman is correct when stating that the Tribunal cannot legally recommend using private land in Treaty settlements. There is nothing in law (as far as I know) that a government can compel a private land owner to sell, for treaty settlements as a reason. However, there is no law stopping a government from negotiating with a private owner to buy their land, and using it for settlements. It has been Convention (capital C) that this has not (usually) been done.
  Significantly, there is only one case I am aware of: the government bought private property for future settlements. And it happened in 2018. It should not be repeated.

Pharmac not funding breast cancer drugs. I can access thedrugs here, and a number of my friends have had cancer and accessed these drugs. But if someone my age gets metastatic breast cancer in New Zealand they’re Screwed!

  Not so Monique. There are always people distressed about their health state. Their belief that a new wonder drug would fix them does not hold.
  We get extremely good public health care in NZ. Pharmac may get pilloried but they have a competent panel constantly reviewing new offerings. They do insist that drugs be first proven to work to a reasonable degree. Otherwise Big Pharma would just target them.

I have a theory. My theory is that Ardern is burned out. I think she is being kept under wraps as much as possible because she can’t be relied upon to make sound decisions.

My theory is that her team are running protection for her, to maintain the facade of her ‘running’ the Government.

Anyone could have gone to Tokelau recently, but Jacinda had to do it – to speak with her family, perhaps?

I understand on a previous occasion she went for treatment for stress or depression but it was itemised as ‘tonsillitis’ to the time.

I get the impression she is very ‘highly strung’, and impetuous.

Like Bowie once wrote: “When it’s good, it;’s really good, but when it’s bad, I go to pieces”…

  Despite Robbo and left-wing spin about Tokelauns being NZ citizens there was absolutely no need for the PM to visit (at this particular time as clearly it wasn’t important to visit many other Islands) when other senior Cabinet Ministers could have.
  
  I mean Labour’s Deputy, Kelvin Davis, could have stepped up and done the NZ government proud.
  
  Even Deputy PM Winston could have called in before heading to his other overseas destinations.
  
  No matter what Labour spin the perception is (after a 3 week Parliamentary recess) that Jacinda wanted to avoid staying in NZ – especially just as the Ihumatao issue was reaching its (initial – more to come) peak and the pressure was on her.
  
  This Ihumatao issue, if not played well, could see brand Jacinda massively damaged in Maoridom and could lead to COL infighting.
  
  Let’s face it (not that the MSM are making a big issue … yet), the Labour Party are in serious damage control mode at the moment and I think it would be fair to say the Labour Party are shitting themselves big time as to how to get out of this mess as no matter what they do their will be major hurt (on one side or the other) and potentially far ranging ramifications.
  
  Frankly who (in Labour) wouldn’t want to take off to somewhere remote just now – Jacinda just did!

    As I have previously stated, I had a significant episode of depression and anxiety come to a head late in 2017. It was a year before I got back to work, and I have accepted that I will be only working part-time for the remainder of my working years.
    
    If the PM has suffered an episode of depression & anxiety, then I empathise with her. The last thing she needs right now is the pressure of being PM, and all that goes with it. I hope those close to her are putting her wellbeing, and that of Neve, ahead of any political considerations.

    Well said Srylands and I take back a bit/better clarify what I wrote earlier …. I’m not sure that it is a matter of the PM being under stress (and escaping) more like a typically cynical and “well played” Labour leadership move to keep her out of the media spotlight whilst Labour, its Maori caucus try and wrestle control of the narrative over the Ihumatao issue.
    
    A week ago Jacinda was appearing to “cave in” slightly to protester/media pressure just enough to defuse the Ihumatao issue (protester/media) by calling for a building halt (Fletchers).
    
    Which then caused a backlash (the whole TOW process being compromised etc), threats to sue the PM by David Rankin etc etc.
    
    Meanwhile presumably NZ First were/are not impressed (and won’t budge on this one) … can’t alienate an important COL partner.
    
    Plus ACT has found its voice again and National are sticking to the law.
    
    If that was not bad enough …. behold to middle in NZ watching with disquiet we have the Green’s merry band of designer-clothes radicals the so called “squad” bashing on the govt and taking the side of protesters, to cap that off woke TVNZ/RNZ are giving them heaps of airtime – splendid, as they say!
    
    If Jacinda were around last week Labour (and herself) would have been under immense pressure to “take a side” (and watch the COL start to implode)?!?!
    
    Labour says gotta protect the “brand” peeps … hey done Tokoleau and Vogue, what’s next!

The Occupation at Iumatao. Who benefits? (Novel take on occupation)
Cui bono: literally “to whom is it a benefit?”, is a Latin phrase about identifying crime suspects. It expresses the view that crimes are oftentimes committed to benefit their perpetrators, especially financially. Which party benefits may not be obvious, and there may be a scapegoat. [Wikipedia]. Note that benefit also means the avoidance of loss.

Let me look at the occupation from this angle.
Do the general populace gain a benefit? View of harbour still exists. Historic stonefields unimpeded. Do most general populace even go there? No. Effectively no benefit

Local Iwi: This group loses 25 percent of the development, so net loss if stopped.

Iwi that have had settlements: No benefit because claims supposedly final.

Future Iwi settlements: Maybe, but would be breaking the spirit of the 1975 Act. Possible backlash. Certainly would be hard to get land back from private owners, and I suspect courts would favour current owners.

Urban Maori: If not identified with a recognised Maori group, still nothing.

Council: Net loss as will forego rates on future residents.

So who does this leave us with? The inhabitants of Iumatao Village. Rates may go up as value of neighbouring development adds value. This has already been expressed by residents in press. Lack of rural setting within a metropolis, which is possibly why some people live there, would be impacted. Flooding of area by nearly five times the number of existing residents, so social hierarchy and structures destroyed, especially if different cultures come in. Increased traffic and impact on current resources.

Enter the scapegoats: Heritage, cultural offensive, re-opening old land confiscation wounds, archaeological site. Note that SOUL leadership carefully (in my opinion) focuses on cultural reasons, and not on normal community reasons to block development. To be fair, people in leafy suburbs use similar tactics: heritage tree, increased traffic, social fabric, etc.

But Iumatao is, and this is what SOUL is basically about, a Nimby dream scenario. Would people outside the area care for normal scapegoat reasons? SOUL has support on dubious grounds.

  Relations between the two nations are now at their lowest ebb since diplomatic relations were normalized in 1965.

I heard on the 1pm news (Newstalk ZB) that the organisers of the Ihumātao occupation have called for a National Day of Action on Tuesday, and are calling on people to protest at Fletchers, and at Fletcher subsidiaries, such as Placemakers.

In my mind, that is a dumb, dumb strategy, and risks SOUL losing any of the public goodwill it has gathered. Fletcher’s have done nothing illegal, and have bent over backwards to work with Te Kawerau ā Maki , including having allocated 40 new houses for the iwi. They are not the villains here, and as both Willie Jackson and Peeni Henare have noted, have a legal agreement with Te Kawerau ā Maki which should be honoured.

It will be interesting to see how Labour and Jacinda Ardern in particular deal with the escalation of this protest. I expect this to become a defining issue for the coalition government.

I thought the Greens’ mantra was to respect people and not call them names?

I heard a soundbite on newshub today and at their conference James Shaw rejected working with National because Simon Bridges “lacks personal integrity”.

Coming from the weasel James Shaw as he over inflates the value of their virtue-signalling “middle-class green” policies and minimises the real-world consequences which will be a worse (global) environment and higher costs being passed onto those in our own society that can least afford it!

Piss off James Shaw and take your so-called “integrity” and shove it up your ….!

  Shaw won’t deal with Bridges because he “lacks personal integrity”. But he’s quite happy to give confidence and supply to Labour, who are in coalition with the man censured by Parliament in 2008 for wilfully misleading Parliament by filing a false Pecuniary Interest Return.
  
  Quite what that says about Shaw’s judgment is for others to judge!

    Frankly National should rule out working with the Greens – they are dangerous and intolerant zealots and would prefer to destroy our society the way we know it simply in order to worship some overseas inspired and driven BS agenda – talk about selling out NZ’s sovereignty!

I dont know if I missed the discussion on the latest Colmar Brunton poll, but the MSM headlines on it didnt give the full picture in my opinion.
The talk was the drop of Ardern by 4 pts and Christopher Luxon appearing at 1% when not even in Parliament.
But what about the political parties? Forget the leadership. I think a significant proportion of the population think they are bright if they can name the Prime Minister, naming the leader of the opposition would be too hard.
But, National were at 45%, Labour 43%, Greens 6%, NZ First 3%.
National were only up 1%, but were 7 % up on the Newshub poll a couple of weeks earlier. Then according to MSM at 38%, it was doomsday for National.
Anyhow, the Greens always poll higher in polls than election day, several commentators say this. Last election they were polling at 8%, but only got 5.3% on election nite. Follow the same trend here and both the Greens and NZ First are gone and only National and Labour survive with National in majority.
Unless the $3billion bribe kicks in and NZ First wins an electoral seat. But then Seymour and ACT will win one anyhow

    Don’t forget the June Colmar Brunton poll with National on 44% leading Labour on 42% (it wasn’t quite the big news it should have been thanks to the TV3 Reid Research poll having National on 37% which was the “major” news story instead – MSM gotta take out Bridges)!

Good points, Colmar Brunton say they don’t prompt the names of the preferred PM candidates when polling.

Alot of people don’t follow politics closely and there’s even been tv coverage of young people (working age) that don’t know even who Jacinda Ardern is (who woulda thunk it)!

So perhaps its not surprising that Simon isn’t that well known (nor many other beltway politicians like Robbo and Kelvin etc, heh perhaps it also helps explain why someone who already has name recognition like Judith Collins features well)!

So what do the people think about having a part-time Prime Minister? Could make for an interesting Polling question (imagine if CB or Newshub/Reid Research started asking that)!
