  So the 2019 Rugby World Cup has commenced in Japan, and most New Zealanders are unable to view games live because NZ broadcasting rights are now in the hands of privately-owned Spark NZ. Even among Spark’s paying customers, 40,000 homes have now been advised that their internet connections are not strong enough to handle the ‘streaming’ service, and even more homes do not have modern-enough television sets.
  
  This is a disaster of some proportions for the majority of ordinary New Zealanders. The Spark Sports initiative needs an urgent initiative via the country’s largest TV provider, Television NZ (owned by the country’s ordinary taxpayers) or via Sky Sport. How is our Prime Minister going to step in and direct Government action towards finding a negotiated resolution to this problem amongst these relevant parties and RWC’s ultimate broadcasting rights holder?
  
  It’s unacceptable to me that most citizens of New Zealand, winners of the last two Rugby World Cups, are unable to watch live the All Blacks’ defence of their trophy. Where is the appropriate and decisive leadership to come from within this hopelessly-prepared Government?

    Get HOLA, and register with an overseas group like ITV ( although you’ll need a mate who can supply a UK TV license details by the looks of things. ) Else just google free Rugby, someone somewhere in a corrupt shithole will be streaming it.     I can’t get the RWC either CG. Spark Sport was less than useful when I enquired how to get the RWC, and sent me a link to places in Auckland City that would be playing RWC live games – a little challenging for me as Auckland is in the wrong island !
    
    I bought a chromecast thingy, but Spark are unable to tell me how to use it, talk to it or connect it. all they do is send me links to reams of writing that I would be unable to read through before the kick off time – so I have given up, and am resigned to only watching the measly few offerings on TV1 !
    
    Thank you very much Spark – I have heard that if the Spark streaming service crashes that I may be able to get some matches on Duke – so at least there is some hope yet !

      There were a couple of guys on the telly yesterday who tried out chromecast and another one, said they were easy, took 5 minutes and worked fine. Have to have the right sort of telly set though.

        I have one. It was given to me a year ago by someone who now regrets they did.
        You need a tv with a hdmi input, which I have. After that I followed the instructions and it was quite a quite setup.
        Once it’s set up you download the Spark Sport app login and tee up the rugby. There’s a wee symbol you click which sends the picture to the tv & you’re laughing.
        Alternatively you can plug a computer into the the tv and use it as a monitor, I believe.
        
        I have a thing to connect my iPhone direct to the tv via a hdmi cable. Doesn’t work for this application I found.

      Apple TV is easy
      
      And there is the Freeview smart VU a cheap android TV streamer which would have been a better than thr chromecast though it is a poor device and the freeview app is dire

      Chromecast gadgets can be difficult to set up.
      
      First check your modem that the settings allow this sort of relay. My son in law here for the recent wedding set that for me. It had worked previously but a change of hardware turned it off.
      
      Next sign in on a PC with a Google Chrome browser to your Google account. Without that it’s no go. Smart phones with Google accounts work too.
      That will allow the device to be detected and installed for the household. It will be named and passworded and accessible through a Chrome browser .

        I’ve got a TV with HDMI (the kids use this for their Playstation) and the Chromecast plugs into that OK. But when I try to connect the computer to it, that action turns off the Wi-Fi. When I turn the Wi-Fi back on that disconnects the chromecast. It seem that I cannot have both working at the same time.
        I’ll have to wait until my daughter or granddaughter comes to visit, they seem to be able to set this sort of stuff up.
        
        Also, I had to sign in to gmail to get something from the app store. I signed into gmail three times (because I kept forgetting the login and password) but still could not get what I needed.
        
        Is there any way to clear out the gmail logins that I created? I don’t need them other than for this app thingy?

        Sorry, I may have just accidentally reported you.
        
        The Chrome account which comes with gmail is a necessity. I have had to reluctantly keep mine. I won’t use gmail which is reputedly surveilled to harvest info to help sell advertising. Any gmail I have is basically ignored.
        
        Your modem seems that it may need to have the settings changed.

    To be fair, I think this WC will be more accessible to ‘hard working average Kiwis’ than the last one. Most games, certainly involving NZ, will be shown on TV One.
    However unlike you, I don’t believe it is the Govt’s role to manage professional sports events or private companies coverage of them. Let the market decide. Extending coverage to ‘free to air’ reduces the commercial value, and therefore price paid by, in this case, Spark. In turn the NZRU has fewer $’s to grow the game, retain players etc.

      I was in Thailand just after a coup when the football World Cup came along. Your average Thai can’t afford pay tv so the junta, wanting to look good, bought the broadcast rights and it was on free to air tv.
      They sent nobody to the tournament so the commentators were a couple of blokes in a studio in Bangkok. Also the basic package they paid for only showed the score at halftime and full time. So if you didn’t understand thai you needed to watch the whole game to know who was winning.

    What’s the difference between the world cup being in spark sports hands vs Sky network TV hands? It’s actually more accessible from my perspective because I don’t have to pay for a bunch of sky services I don’t want in order to get the one I do want.
    
    And most nz’ers WILL in fact be able to see the defence live as semi finals onwards are live on free to air TV

    I watched last night’s match at home, not on TV One, but via Spark Sport. We’ve got a three-year old smart TV, so I had to buy a Chromecast receiver, but streamed from my iPhone, last night’s coverage was excellent. There was no buffering, no drop-outs and no picture disturbance.
    
    We’re fortunate that we’ve had fibre internet for four years now. Whanganui was the first town in New Zealand to complete the necessary infrastructure, and fibre is available for anyone who wants it. I work from home most of the time, and having fast, reliable internet at home is a must.
    
    Live streaming is definitely the way of the future. For those who can’t access the stream, TVNZ is showing the All Black matches up to the quarter-final delayed, and the semi-finals and final live. In addition, Sky and Spark reached a deal for Sky to provide coverage for commercial users (pubs, clubs etc).
    
    Spark beat Sky in a bidding contest for the rights, and that’s fine. It’s not an issue that the government should intervene over.

    Rugby, like other professional sports has been cashing in on it’s popularity via high priced subscription broadcasting. But in the long term that destroys the fan base. Like many I stopped watching rugby when it all went to sky. My kids have never even seen a game, and likely that in 20 years few under 50’s in NZ will have any interest. So world cup rates a total Meh from me.

  I think so. I’m acting accordingly and have ceased to watch the 6pm news offerings. Whether it’s the RWC or bloody Maori Language Week, both channels take the distraction du jour and ram it down your craw until you’re sick to death of it. And that’s merely by the first ad break.

      The meeting may yet be Trumped and dumped on account of the insult to the USA.

The Maori king has said: “Mana whenua agree they want their land returned, so they can make decisions about its future.”

Obviously Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern now needs to tell the Maori King, Tūheitia Pōtatau, to make and publicise his decision, or the consensus decision on the future of Ihuamātao, before the Government can determine its avenue of assistance – or if it has any further role at all.

Does the Maori King need further Settlement treatment? – that having happened already,
Or History and Heritage Ministry consideration? – although the Otuataua Stonefields are already set aside.

And apparently Fletchers are appraising their position right now – which may mean too that they are running out of patience. To hint to Jacinda they could sue the Government for her impetuous “no building” edict could be interesting.

  Yvette – the difficulty I have is that the area in question has been settled and millions of dollars and an abject apology has been given. However the young ones in the Tribe have not settled and we are back around the merry go round.
  Can the crown ask for their settlement money back? Also can we take our apology back?
  
  Also this Maori king business worries me. Are we to have two sovereigns? Does our prime minister take second place while the Maori king decides the issue?
  
  Personally I would like the government to take a stand and stop appeasing Maori interests.

  Tūheitia is only Maori King with authority relative to Waikato and a couple of other tribes. Otherwise he is a former truck driver.
  Maori have no nation in NZ and even less likelyhood now of coalescing with the massive movement into the cities which has taken place. The tribes didn’t care sufficiently previously for them so now they are independent.
  
  The disparate tribes killed and dispossessed each other and that ingrained Polynesian genetic belief of might is right is still there. “If we can take it off someone else it’s ours. They’ve got to watch out for us–trickery is OK, Maui did it.”
  
  That’s why the “full and final settlements are a sham”. To combat this we Pakeha should consider a financial counter cultural development charge to expunge those settlements. I sense that individual Maori activism is on the rise and probably being indirectly promoted by the Human Rights Commissioner, The Race Relations Commissioner and the Waitangi Tribunal and their Offices.

    New Zealand has been occupied for thousands of years. Archeological finds of human presence date back thousands of years, and in some cases tens of thousands of years.
    
    The story of the Maoris butchering and eating the Morioris was not a white man myth, but a story from the Maori because they were proud of their conquests. Winning in battle was currency of the day before England arrive.
    
    All the way through to the 1950s and 60s Libraries and the National Library Archives held 60-100 books on the Maori – Moriori massacres. But they were removed and destroyed, leaving very little evidence of the truth.
    
    It is no secret that Ngai Tahu DNA is almost identical to DNA from that of the remaining Morioris. The bloodline of the core Ngai Tahu, is quite different from that of other tribes. Oral history of some tribes record arriving from different places to that which we believe, and some tribes record the presence of fair skinned people upon arrival to NZ.
    
    It would appear that mainstream Maori happened to be the current squatters and victors when the musical NZ inhabitants chair music stopped when Cook arrived. Any ideas that Maori was not first and preceded by Celts, Chinese, Waitaha, Pakepakeha, Peruvians, to name a few, is suppressed along with archeological artifacts.
    
    It is not Maori or Paheka per se, that are suppressing the facts, as both Maori and Pakepakeha are being denied the truth of their own past and history.

1. A political party is not the appropriate body to be assessing sexual assaults.

2. The Police is the appropriate body to be assessing sexual assaults.

Instead we have crickets and tumble-weeds from the MSM because their hero and role-model Jacinda “sez so”.

Well MSM what sort of role model is Jacinda?

She seems to be someone who is deliberately being kept distant from these serious issues to maintain “plausible deniability” (or if not that then she is lying). Is that the actions of a role-model? Being “deliberate” kept in the shade (not dark)?

I don’t think so. Never has. Never will. Especially when it comes to sexual assault and a pattern of on-going harassment.

  Niggly, I also slightly distraught with the way this matter has been handled.
  
  Although not officially knowing about the sexual assault until the Spinoff item on Monday September 9, Ardern had berated the Labour Council August 10, a month earlier, and “very seriously shared [her] view that … particularly they are not the appropriate place to ever undertake an investigation into a sexual assault.” [1]
  
  And then went on to create two more inquiries.
  The Dew Review is due within a week of Ardern’s return from China and the US, and should confirm for her if a young woman was digitally raped by a Labour staffer, or not.
  
  If so, surely the whole matter needs to be reported then to the Police who will have to belatedly investigate the entire issue to be able to progress it to a court case – because, unless I am utterly mistaken, Ardern’s Dew Review can not do that itself.
  
  And if there is no substance, the now accuser must become a suspect in a different crime that will require Police investigation.

How much solid evidence is there for claims that Maori kids have been “beaten” in schools for speaking Maori?

Is this some sort of false memory being drummed up by minorities around the Western world?

I ask because of this, by Peruvian-American writer Natalia Sylvester, writing in the New York Times about growing up in a Spanish-speaking family in Florida:

“If you go back one generation, you’ll hear stories of people like my in-laws, whose teachers in Florida beat them for speaking in school the language they spoke at home.”

And is suppression of Spanish speaking in Florida different in principle from Sylvester’s parents’ attitude to their children speaking English at home?

“My parents refused to let my sister and me forget how to speak Spanish by pretending they didn’t understand when we spoke English. ”

I have just streamed Assie v Fiji through my phone with wi fi and the picture colour and sound was perfect. I’m all set up for the All Blacks at 8.45. My TV is a Philip’s Cineos and over 5 years old.
