      The favour Trump asks is nothing to do with Biden. He asks for help to investigate the origin of the Russian collusion allegations particularly as relates to the involvement of Crowdstrike. Interesting. Is Trump planning to go after someone for libel?
      
      Zelensky responds that he will be talking to Giuliani who is apparently investigating the origin of the Russia collusion hoax for the president (as his lawyer), and promises the investigation will be open and fair.
      
      The mention of fair investigations prompts Trump to mention the previous fired prosecutor . He talks about the “bad people” involved in getting the prosecutor fired including the now disgraced former Ukrainian ambassador, and that is when he mentions that Biden bragged about getting the prosecutor fired and asks him to look into it.
      
      I can see the shadow of your argument here, but it all looks very conspiracy theory to me. Most of it is written between the lines of what was actually said. I don’t see evidence that Trump threatened a foreign power to help him kneecap a political opponent in an election. For one thing Biden is unlikely to be the nominee. There is no mention of withholding military and no clear quid pro quo.
      
      There are also some potentially fatal timing problems with your narrative. The military aid was held up pending the result of the election; reasonable if you want to know what kind of regime you are militarily supporting. But from what I have heard the Ukrainians were not told and didn’t even find out about this until well after the phone call in question. If this is true it pretty much eliminates the narrative that withholding military aid was an unspoken threat in this conversation.
      
      Whatever this is, it certainly isn’t evidence of “high crimes and misdemeanors”, which is supposedly the standard required for impeachment.

        I’m even coming around to the possibility that this was a setup. Trump and his team scripted the call and arranged for the info to be “leaked” to the supposed whistleblower along with some salicious other details.
        
        When the Democrats go after the squirrel, the transcripts are released and the whole narrative starts to collapse – and everyone is talking about Joe’s problems.
        
        The Alinsky rule is to accuse your opponents of doing what you are actually doing. The Trump rule seems to be to spoof doing what your opponents got away with doing, and when the media bite – show that there’s no “there there” and highlight the hypocrisy.
        
        I do think that those who love to deride Trump as stupid, dumb, can’t or won’t read, and all that, really need to reevaluate their conclusions. He’s either a damn sight cleverer than they are prepared to admit, or he’s by a huge amount the luckiest SOB around.

  Yes, regarding Trump /Ukraine which is the latest scam to undo the 2016 election by the democrats and their media accomplices. Note that it replaces Trump /Russia and Trump /racist which were the previous manufactured scandals.
  
  The transcript has been released of the presidents call. He asks one time to investigate Hunter Biden in the context of corruption and some concern about ambassadors. Now if that’s grounds for impeachment then the democrat senators that asked Ukraine for dirt on Trump also need to be unseated.
  
  Otherwise it’s a perfectly normal conversation about I’ve stayed in Trump tower and I have many wonderful Ukrainian friends. Read the transcript on the Fox news website.

      Batman – no, what Trump did was to ask Ukraine to investigate issues surrounding possible Ukrainian interference in the 2016 presidential election. These were issues around crowd strike and around Joe Biden and Hunter Biden and shutting down a Ukrainian investigation.
      Everyone agrees that Trump should investigate overseas interference in the 2016 election to make sure that it doesn’t happen again in 2020.
      
      So there is nothing there. It’s very important that everyone understand that the Democrats and their media accomplices have never accepted the 2016 election and are doing everything they can to undermine the duly elected president.
      
      Everyone should also understand that if they want to get rid of Pres Trump then they should defeat him at the 2020 election through the normal democratic process. It’s called democracy.

        Trump himself doesn’t think he needs to investigate election interference, not if it’s assisting him anyway. There is a bribery crime here. He withheld military aid as leverage to get a politically motivated investigation started.
        
        I’m sure people do acknowledge that Trump was duly elected (I certainly do, to be clear), but the fact he has committed multiple crimes whilst in office means that investigations are now underway on multiple fronts.
        
        So, your position is that no President should ever be impeached and that clause should be removed from the Constitution because elections happen every four years? And your position is also that no oversight of a President should be possible, and they should have unlimited authority to do whatever they want?
        
        I look forward to to you advocating for this approach under the next Democratic President, or indeed our own Labour Government!

        There you go again Batman, flat out lying. The allegations have not been proven false. It is a matter of record now that Alexandra Chalupa was paid large sums of money by the DNC to collude/conspire with the Ukrainian government to get dirt on Trump and his campaign in the 2016 elections. Asking for assistance to investigate crimes over that and other crimes committed – are you suggesting that because those crimes were committed by Democrats that they should never be investigated ? Hogwash.
        
        The military aid was withheld for the Ukrainian election to be completed – perfectly reasonable as you should want to know just who you are supporting with military aid.
        
        Read the transcript, no quid pro quo mentioned, and the Ukrainians agree, interference by previous administrations in US elections is wrong and should be investigated. There’s also no call for Ukraine to fabricate anything, that’s your projection talking because that’s what happened in 2016 – by Democrats.
        
        So what specific crimes has Trump committed in office – try to keep away from the false Democrat narrative and tell us what those crimes are.

    The standard for any reading news reports should be, wait at least 24hrs after any news story for the ‘real’ story to actually come out. The rush to print news and that lack of resources means that the amount of false / incomplete stories continues to rise.
    
    Case in point the SBW instagram photo scandal that everyone assumed was religious intollerance turned out to simply be a case of a dispute around the copyright of the photo involved. Wait 24hrs for the full story.

      Batman – I must say you are the Crown Prince of wrongness today! Here are the facts. Hunter Biden was placed on the board of a Ukrainian energy company and paid something like $50,000 per month. As far as anyone can deduce Hunter Biden has no expertise in energy or Ukraine.
      
      Hunter Biden also has an investment company that received $1 billion of investment from Ukraine.
      
      Joe Biden at that time was the vice president of the United States and was intimately involved in decisions about huge amounts of aid to be paid by the United States to Ukraine.
      
      Is it just coincidence that Hunter Biden received such largess from Ukraine at the very time that his father was involved in granting huge amounts of aid to the Ukraine from the United States? Would you say Batman that is all coincidence? Move on, nothing to see here??

      Young folk can have a piss-up year at university on taxpayers, with two following choices:
      
      1. Stay on for a social-sciences or Maori studies degree that will be bugger all use in getting a job with a liveable income, let alone reasonably pay off the mountain of student debt from completing the course.
      
      2. Drop out without any qualifications but a sense of entitlement and a disdain for jobs that require apprenticeships, or apprenticeship-style training.
      
      Why has NZ become so lousy at industry-led work training?
      
      The great model is there – Germany, with hundreds of apprenticeship categories including even travel agents. (In NZ our taxpayer funded universities and quasi-universities instead offer degrees that are equivalent tourism training but leave the young folk saddled with huge student debt). And Germany is famous for high standards of production and output.
      
      One polytechnic – the locally subsidised one headquartered in Southland – tried to break the mould by setting up very hands-on, job related training for industry in several towns, but now it is being hammered down – the nail that stood up being flattened.

Right of way is Way of Right

I have long been a proponent of the adage that if you choose not to vote, then you cannot complain about the result.
That ended for me yesterday.
I received my voting pack for the Auckland Mayoral and Local Body Elections, and spent a significant amount of time looking through the information provided to see which candidate should receive my vote.
I came to the sad conclusion that amongst the has beens and never was’s, the lunatic fringe, the right wing nutters, and communists and the numpties who wouldn’t even get published in the local paper letters to the editors, there was no candidate to whom I would feel happy to give my vote to.
Not one.

    I voted for Craig Lord – mainly because he’s not a show pony and he doesn’t believe in the climate change bs. I couldn’t believe what a poor selection of people to choose from. I stuck to the independents that seemed comparatively sane, plus a couple of the old guard who aren’t too left.

        Perfectly understandable. This is what FPP often reduces voters to – to casting a protest vote. Surely it is time for Aucklanders to demand STV.
        
        With STV, the protest vote is eliminated. People vote, with their first-preference, for the candidate they really want to see elected, given the candidates on offer. Second- and subsequent preferences are contingency choices, whereby voters indicate who they want their vote to transfer to, if necessary. It is a far superior way of choosing elected representatives.

When the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Attack on Christchurch Mosques returns it findings, there is likely to be a reasonable amount of comment urging voluntary reporting of information – unusual activities, likely even just suspicions – to the Police.

So, how is Labour going to turn around their seeming present culture of not involving Police, to a culture of approachability, an attitude of confidence in expecting empathetic, fair and reliable hearing.

Aspects of the “Christchurch Call” – prevention of live streaming “weaponising videos” and distribution of manifestos – do presume further attacks.
Surely as much effort and public relations should go into measures – community awareness and reporting when needed – to actually prevent such atrocities.

Labour’s current attitude to Police (internal Party inquiries rather than supporting Police investigations) is at the moment not heading in that direction.

But – Communities have a key role in helping ensure Aotearoa is safe. And you have a key role in ensuring that the Government and Government agencies do their job. I encourage you to keep engaging with Government agencies, and leverage your connections to continue advocating for your communities. [1]

At the moment this Government does not seem to be preparing anyone for that – a coming scandal likely to arise from the inappropriate Labour handling of its own present scandals.

“March 15” notably dominated Jacinda Ardern’s UN address and she promoted again the so-called “Christchurch” call, but she has also claimed to be ‘Incredibly frustrated, deeply disappointed’ [2] at the investigation into a Labour staffer. “We have a duty of care, and we failed in it,” [3] but deriding one internal inquiry she has set up another two, instead of referring matters to the Police.

Ardern by her own hand is turning several of her recent remarks, both here in New Zealand and at the United Nations, to hypocritical crap.
She should do the right thing, refer appropriate matters the Police.

In Ardern’s own emotional slogans :
“Will I be safe now?” should become “Will we be safe now?”

We were watching 1Ewes last night when they crossed live to New York for an update on the PM’s address to the UN. She was telling the heart warming story of visiting Christchurch to meet with the bereaved families immediately following the dreadful mosque massacre. While she was addressing the grieving relatives, out the corner of her eye, she caught sight of a little Muslim boy running toward her. As she bent down to greet him, he whispered in her ear, “Am I safe now?”

I must admit to being somewhat moved myself. Then suddenly, my partner jumps out of the Lazy-Boy, spilling his wine in the process, and blurts out, “What a load of crap! Honestly, she makes up half this shit as she goes along”

Yes the hapless Justin Lester. It appears when Wellingtons desperately needed Traffic gridlock was seeking a solution. He was visited by a couple of Peters selected MPs from Liebour/Green Party.
Instead of helping fund a long overdue committment to fund the Traffic problem, Lester accepted a much lower amount. He was told by the Politicians Named Twyford and Genter take it or leave it the smaller amount if you dont we will resign and bring down the Peters selected Coalition
Now Lester who favours a historic Partisanship with that ilk agreed to not frighten the horses.
To paraphrase the threat by Genter and co as Lester figured. It was much better to keep his chosen friends in power,than serve theratepayers of Wellington. Yes the same people who pay his wage.
The ratepaying voters of Wellington deserve much better. Lesters message seems to be get stuffed.
A vote for him and his running mate deputy Jill Day would keep that lot in power for another three years. Think the past three years,and massive costs spending by the Liebour/Green Partisan Mayor Lester/Day saddling fixed income ratepayers with massive increases is bad you have not seen nothing yet.

This is a MUST LISTEN podcast by Mark Levin (dated 9/24/19). He points out that nothing has changed after Pelosi’s announcement. It’s the same now as before she said anything. To initiate a real impeachment, a vote must be taken of the floor of the House and this hasn’t happened.

“This is not a formal impeachment inquiry, inasmuch as the full House of Representatives has not been asked to vote on it; a rolecall vote; a head count, where each one is to be noted. Impeachment is serious business. It’s not left to committee chairmen. It’s not left to the Speaker of the House. It’s not left to the Judiciary Committee. [Impeachment] requires a body politic, not committee chairmen and the Speaker of the House to launch it. And she wouldn’t take a vote on the House floor. She did not allow a vote on the House floor, because she is still trying to protect her, 30, 40, 50 members. So she makes this pronouncement, like she’s some kind of a fascist dictator. That she has determined, one person from San Francisco; one House district; that she has determined to launch a formal impeachment inquiry. That’s not what the Constitution calls for. There’s been no change except the labeling and the nomenclature. That’s it.

He goes on to point of that there’s never been a thing like this less than 14 months before an election. The people (the greatest jury) can decide if they want Trump out. It’s up to them. This is an election campaign effort. A political PR effort.

Pelosi is asked, well what if the phone records show that what Trump told the Ukrainian leader was benign, she says it doesn’t matter and it will go ahead anyway.

Demonstrators will meet outside the Auckland Town Hall to call for a resolution at the housing development site.

“Perhaps they could offer us a land swap? Or they could reach into their heritage fund, or fund for recreation and parks, to help with the purchase of Ihumātao? … They are the ones who made the mistake in the first place” protest leader Pania Newton says.

Auckland Council designated part of the land a special housing area in 2014, and its sale to construction firm Fletcher in 2016 sparked the long-running protest.

It appears Fletcher purchased the land for $19 million after the 2014 Auckland Council designation for housing.
Since there is no infrastructure or houses actually built yet how has the value of the $19 million land now near doubled to $35.7 million?

Auckland Council values Fletcher’s site at 545 Oruarangi Rd at $36m, being $35.7m in land alone.

Occasionally I watch questions in parliament if I think it might be interesting as I did a couple of days ago.
Last night I watched the UK parliament for awhile.
What a contrast. Their MPs were far more raucous and articulate. (but probably no more capable) Must be those Eton educations.

Anyone who thinks our Labour Party is left wing gone mad should take note of the their comrades in the UK. No wonder they don’t want an election. They’ll never win under their current leader.

I am middle-aged and privileged enough to be lazy about social change.

But on balance I’m glad that young people are getting politically fired up…”

  The Yan saga is a great story. Yan was able to come to New Zealand as a high-school student in Maoist days when the Reds let hardly any one out of the country.
  
  His father had been head of Rotary in China in pre-communist days, and the belief is that Maoist China’s Foreign Minister, Zhou Enlai, also from the old Chinese aristocracy, enabled young Yan to leave for NZ.
  
  Rotarians in Auckland hosted him as he completed his education, and then Rotarians in the United States hosted Yan while he did further university studies.
  
  Yan then tapped these folk as investors and there was a sharemarket takeover of NZ’s Mair Astley, a company dominant in our leather, skins, and wool businesses. Then construction firm Mainzeal was added to the haul. NZ sharemarket takeover rules were loose in those days.
  
  The resultant firm, Richina, switched its focus to China, and initially aimed to dominate tanning in Shanghai, the world’s centre of shoe manufacturing.
  
  The promise of an NZ based, or NZ linked company in that huge industry, was never fully realised, and there were other ventures such as building the first aquarium attraction in Beijing.
  
  Yan enlisted former Prime Minister, Jenny Shipley, as a director, something I bet she regrets.

  Now I don’t understand how all this is structured, but it seems the people at the bottom of the food chain are left out of pocket while those at the top make sure that no matter how badly things went they’ve covered their bottoms.

  The coastal changes as mentioned in the stuff article are not caused by man-made climate change. They have been going on since the planet was created by God, Terra-formed by Aliens, or grown out of a single atom after the Big Banh. (take your pick)
  
  Coastal erosion caused by Coastal drift due to the influence of the sea, weather, is a change that has been going on forever. Anyone that has studied classical geography, got taught that. We had to know it to pass School Cert back in the day. Various cultures have legends and physical markers warning about building close to the coast, hell even the bible warns about not building on the sand close to the water.
  
  When people start bleating on about man-made climate change causing coastal erosion, and not coastal drift caused by the weather and the sea, it flags those people as numpties. ie. Not having understanding and a lack of ability to think rationally and objectively, being know-it-alls, and being very loudmouthed about that which they know little about. They think they are being clever the more they rant, but to rational observers that have the understanding, the numpty is viewed as one would view the naked emperor ranting on about being in clothes in the finest of cloths – a stupid idiot.
  It has long been postulated that mans impact on the world around him is tied to the collective unconscious. We are in greater danger of a societal and environmental collapse due to the stupidity of man and the weight of the collective unconscious and its impact on the physical universe than invented “man-made climate change”. It is the stupidity of propagating “the sky is falling” lies, that puts mankind into an “End is Nigh” collective panic and mind-set of futility. That is far more dangerous than coastal drift.
  If you believe in and accept the positive spiritual realm, intuition, dreams, the subconscious, and connection beyond that which occurs through the physical universe, then automatically you must accept that the spititual universe has a potential to be as equally negative as it is positive.
  Nothing happens in isolation, as the minds and souls are interconnected, even if through the collective unconscious. By pumping and enforcing negative bullshit into the minds of people, including vulnerable and impressionable children, you are committing the psychological rape of minds, and altering the precarious balance between between unconscious good and evil.
  
  Lynch mobs, unlawful vigilantes, the entire Hitler youth movement, and indeed the entire Anti-Jewish trance like state Germans fell into, were fervently whipped up. You could call this collective brainwashing. In this irrational state, people will commit all sorts of atrocities, that alone they would dare not even consider doing.
  People like Hitler, Stalin and even our Jacinda and the young Greta, are fanatically possessed by their own unconscious projections. In Christian folklore, this was considered being possessed by evil and doing Satan’s work.
  
  Jung had said that Mankind will bring itself to the brink of destruction time and time again. The only hope of salvation is individuals withdrawing their projections. In political terms it means stop trying to shape the world in your own un-inspected and unconscious images. The Labour manifesto is like living inside a collective nightmare full of contradictions and untruths.

    Yup, I was walking along the beach at Sumner today looking at some dunes which are being eroded. Just a few months back Momma Nature was dumping sand there building up the dune and now She wants her sand for other purposes.
    
    A few months ago the rock-that-was-shag-rock-before-the-earthquakes was fully surrounded by sand. A month ago it was all gone and now it’s all back again.
    
    The low-tide mark can vary from being in line with that rock to, sometimes, 400 metres out to sea.
    
    To try claim things are changing is preposterous – erosion is part of the system. Has been forever and will remain so.
    
    In NZ it is even more ridiculous to worry about sea level rise because seismic movement is so large.
    
    Why worry about 2 cm of hypothetical sea level rise when Kaikoura rose by 2 metres and Wellington has risen by more over the last 200 years?
    
    As for the islands demanding hand outs. Some are growing. Some are receding, but that is likely more due to them extracting too much groundwater.
    
    Yes, there are some real environmental issues to worry about, but plant food – CO2 – is stealing the limelight and detracting from real issues being addressed.

      Some climate change nut once quoted Florida as a perfect example of climate change, how the water has risen several times that of the 1.5mm per year elsewhere on the planet.
      
      We had to point out that because of gravity, sea level rises tend to flatten out across the globe, that it can’t be a local rise and without affecting the rest of the world. He maintained it could. Yet the argument he used about the Arctic and Antarctic melting was that it would flatten out and affect the rest of the planet. It can’t be rising 5mm per year in Florida and still be 1.5mm per year elsewhere. Gravity does what gravity does.
      
      At the time, it took less then 5 minutes google research on Florida to reveal what you said about excess groundwater removal causing the land to sink. Especially in those areas that 50 years ago were swamp, and where deep down it is still swamp and not solid land.

        So kill off modern agriculture and 60M people starve to death just in South Africa. Probably 2 to 5 billion all up.

        No reduction of our emissions is going to do anything on a global scale except make ourselves poorer.
        A poor society will be unable to handle climate change.
        
        Our best course of action is to reduce poverty and try to raise the level of wealth in NZ.
        
        If you insist in a proactive approach a national investment in Nuclear power generation would reduce energy poverty and enable low emission technologies like EV or HV.

    The issue is climate change. Is the climate changing? Yes it is, that’s what climates do. This planet has never been, nor will it ever be, in a state where our climate will remain in status quo. Preceding this current change in climate, there have been many changes in climate that predate the internal combustion engine, steel mills and cow farts!
    
    Is climate change anthropomorphic? Well, it’s suspected, but it is not proven. The science isn’t settled. There may be a theory, but there is no empirical truth. To claim this to be a fact flies in the face of all scientific method, and scientific curiosity must be maintained so that all possible causes and hypotheses can be examined to the fullest extent. There are many contributing factors that make up our climate, we need to consider them all.
    
    Can we be better custodians of our planet? Undoubtedly, we can, and should all do better, and we should be encouraged to do so co-operatively.

Trevor Mallard has made a very significant ruling in the House this afternoon. He has ruled that political parties can NOT edit down videos from Parliament TV to create social media content or advertisements, and has given National until 5pm tomorrow to take down any edited videos it has posted.

This diktat from Mallard is outrageous. He is effectively acting as chief censor of Parliament, and preventing the opposition from holding Ministers to account in the public domain for their statements. During Question Time, he has clarified that, in order to point out as little as one sentence from a Minister, only the entire sequence of questions and answers can be displayed. That, of course, essentially defeats the purpose of publishing anything, as no one wants to sit through five to ten minutes of video for a far briefer extract.

The role of the Speaker requires him to be neutral, and non-partisan. It is hard to imagine a more partisan ruling than the one Mallard has delivered today. Here it is, unedited and complete:

Mallard is getting too big for his boots – like that ass Bercow in the UK. He regards Parliament as his own personal fiefdom and rides roughshod over the rights of Members. He is boorish and patronising, especially when dealing with women.
He corrects members’ grammar and even their style of speaking, conveniently forgetting his own solecisms and his horribly nasal voice.

Just received an email from GENESIS ENERGY advising of yet another increase in the cost of our gas supply. It goes up 5% on Novembr 1st, from a DFR of 120.19, to the new rate of 126.20. As i just expressed to my partner, “In this environment of ultra low inflation, how in Hades can they get away with that?” All he said was, “Cos they f~~king can”

Like he’s said previuosly, they’d have nooo idea what it costs to heat a 15m pool during winter 🙁

It is a strong contender for the weakest, most transparent piece of PR posturing I have ever seen. And she was barely given two minutes, mostly it seems to foreshadow Colbert may be coming to New Zealand.

  Just imagine what sort of people will slip in when we quadruple the numbers of people to vet. Annually.

    One thing I have observed about Kiwi culture is that no one takes responsibility for mistakes, and the public never holds them to account.
    For example, what was the name of the person who decided to undercut the Pakeha and Maori workers of this country with the importation of cheap Pacific Island labor in the late 1960s and early 1970s?
    Why has this person (and someone must have made the decision) never been identified and held to account?
    
    (I will entertain the idea that this decision was made (during the Cold War) to prevent the newly independent nations of the South Pacific from offering facilities to the Soviets or to the Chinese.)

Poor old Zimbabwe.

Having been a breadbasket to the region in the 1970s, now they can only feed a third of their population. Another third depend on international food aid and the last third have buggered off to South Africa.

Bread prices are up 500% since April, fuel scarce or unavailable. Electricity is only available a few hours a day. The Harare water treatment plant has shut down due to lack of chemicals and maintenance.

The cratering of the newly floated currency is being blamed on “financial terrorism” and “financial weapons of mass destruction”. How the hell they can say that with a straight face I don’t know.

Of course this is all blamed on sanctions and the West. No matter that Rhodesia was under far tighter sanctions in the 1970s and more than fed the whole country.

As with all these commie Comrades, the fat cats are getting fatter and the man on the street is getting shafted.

  Famine killed more than a million people while the rest of the British Isles carried on as usual. Admittedly for the lower classes ‘usual’ wasn’t too flash in those days with a very poor life expectancy.
