    You grow up in a crowded country, where raising children is expensive and housing is unaffordable, so you decide to have fewer or no kids. Fair enough. Over time as the population of your country falls, houses will become cheaper and there will be less congestion in the big cities.
    And then the government cheats by opening the immigration floodgates and swapping you out demographically.
    Is there no justice? (And the people keep on voting for the establishment parties.) Oh well, it is the will of the people, I guess…

        I am as guilty as you of coming to this country and “taking houses away” from Kiwis. (I haven’t taken any jobs away, since my clients are all based in Japan.)
        
        Should native New Zealanders be “protected” from competition from immigrants? Should the country pursue a policy of “globalism” or of “nationalism”? It’s a tricky one.
        
        I feel quite conflicted about this issue sometimes.

        – Immigration must have a plan that benefits the country.
        – Immigrants must benefit the country and should be chosen.
        More importantly, – immigrants shouldn’t squeeze out the locals nor should they upturn the locals values and mores unless they are negative and damaging to both people and society.
        
        NB:The religion of peace doesn’t qualify, (no matter what liberals say) neither do corrupt regimes and their people, neither do communists or fascists.

  Unilaterally decides to halt all oil and gas exploration. Upsets everyone in Taranaki.
  Decides that there will be no new coal mines on the West Coast. The West Coast is not happy!
  Cancels new roads and puts new taxes on petrol. Well that upsets every motorist.
  Abandons flagship policy of new affordable housing. What is she planning to achieve during the government’s term of office?
  Unilaterally decides that any protections of the unborn child will be abandoned. Christians and social conservatives are incensed. Unfortunately unborn children can’t be reached for comment.
  Keen to sign every protocol to stop global warming and climate change including culling of dairy herds. Dairy farmers are alarmed!
  Business confidence plummets as government spends more and taxes more.

    Yes, Scott, where I live the shine is definitely (although reluctantly in many cases) going off Jacinda and her band of total incompetents.
    Only diehard socialists are still making excuses for her/them.
    Unfortunately though, we are neither city-based nor elite. Jacinda and her acolytes have no regard at all for heartland families.
    As an aside – we had a rueful chuckle about a TV1 news item on Saturday which praised the millions of taxpayer funds being spent currently on cleaning up an area of industrial pollution and contamination somewhere on the Auckland waterfront. This is in preparation for the America’s Cup yachting.
    All very nice and cosy.
    No blame, no hate, no judgement, no suggestion of polluter pays. No one taking their own lives.

        Even though Mandela was the head of a terrorist organisation that killed tens of thousands of the people he was supposed to be liberating.
        
        Even though De Klerk helped set up South Africa for what it is now (another failed part of Africa).
        
        I still think they deserved the Nobel because they managed to broker a peace, at least for 25-odd years, where the expected outcome was immediate civil war.
        
        Where is the civil war threat that PriNZess defused?

        stephie you are such a forgetful muppet. We have been through this before. Countless times.
        
        There were thousands of black South Africans killed every year in ANC vs others violence in the struggle to be king of the castle before the hand over to black rule. This went on for well over a decade (1980s).
        
        If it was a freedom struggle you’d expect most of the people the ANC killed to be whites.
        
        But no, the ANC were almost exclusively killing other blacks.
        
        Nor was it whites baiting the blacks to kill eachother. Indeed every year thousands of white soldiers and reservists (myself included) were called up to go on township patrol duty to stop the blacks killing each other.

    If Greta won the Nobel Peace Prize, I would not at all be surprised.
    
    Being white may count against her, but her youth and mental illnesses may offset this.
    
    That’s the trouble with intersectionality. How do you decide the weighting of any one particular characteristic? Does mental illness outweight gender, or age, or skin color or religion? On what basis do you sort and rank this infinite number of attributes?
    
    Forget it. Just treat the person as an individual and be done with it.

      After careful study I believe the way that it goes is this. White men are horrible and responsible for everything wrong in the world. Old white men are the worst of the worst.
      
      Women are of course victims of the patriarchy and so they get victimisation points. A young woman is particularly worth listening to, especially if they have a disability! Then they start to become the font of all wisdom.
      
      Above them are people of colour especially in New Zealand Maori people who should be given millions of dollars of compensation for colonisation and also their hurt feelings about Captain Cook.
      
      Above them are homosexuals and lesbians who in every TV program should be portrayed as the most saint like people in the whole show.
      
      Above them are transgender who should be able to identify as whatever they want and whenever they want.
      
      Then at the top of the victimisation hierarchy is Muslims! That’s why our Prime Minister hugging Muslim women is just so virtue signalling that no wonder she deserves a Nobel Peace Prize! 🙂

        If the NZ Prime Minister won the Nobel Peace Prize, then that would be an amazing thing.
        
        Intersectionality ignores the individual and assigns them to a group. A better way to create hostility between “us” and “them” could not be imagined. It is inducive to civil war. It creates “fear,” which is a useful tool for the manipulation of people who follow the herd and do not think for themselves.
        
        While wolves may laugh off intersectionality as foolishness, the sheep will absolutely go for it. Therein lies its alure and its danger.

    Before too many conclusions are reached about Greta Thunburg and her chances of winning a Nobel Peace Prize, I would want to know about the authorship of her speech to the UN.
    
    Was the content of that speech her own original work, or was all or much of it provided by an anonymous person rather more than 15 years of age? And who could be trusted to provide an authoritative answer to that question?

      She does most herself but gets some assistance on the scientific side from a couple of climate scientists, and some input from her parents.

        Thanks, Batman. I guess my reaction is “But who would ever know?” I doubt very much, for example, that her repeated “How dare you!” challenge originated from a 16-year-old whose native language is not English.
        
        I also query what proportion of people could be expected to respond positively to that repetitive “How dare you!” rhetorical device. Great and effective oratory usually involves an ability to persuade an audience, at the individual level, primarily through the use of reason. Thunburg’s address, however, appeared to assume that her audience at large were invariably conservation infidels. It’s not common that people are persuaded of a point of view by being insulted repeatedly.
        
        Over a short period somebody will make a fortune from “discovering” and/or marketing Ms Thunburg in relation to her address. But that address is unlikely, in my view, to signal the beginning of a meaningful revolution in countering the world’s real ‘global warming’ threat.

My Facebook feed was interrupted by a Labour Party ad claiming credit for the new Radiation Machine being installed in Wellington for cancer treatment. They stated that this was another example of Labour countering 9 years of neglect.

The second reply was from someone who worked there, and stated that the Radiation Department had always had high quality equipment, and that this new machine had been in the pipeline for some time as a planned procurement.

I am in Lucerne, Switzerland for a few days as part of my European holiday.

Our urban planners should come and study how they do public transport here. It is outstanding. So convenient and economical to use.

And this is in Lucerne with a population of only 80000 and what appears to be a similar spread to our cities.

So no excuses on the basis of small population and city spread. It is just a matter of getting it right.

  I hear what your saying, but to be fair you are talking about a genuine 1st world country with a per capita GDP 50% higher than ours with double our population, all crammed into an area which is roughly the size of the Waikato and BoP.

    Such trips are usually referred to as ‘junkets’.

Will Ms Genter try to manipulate again. Will she accept NZTA’s position it is perfectly OK to treat 1594 separate ‘feebate’ submissions as spam thus as only one submission, even though they were from identified individuals. Is this a new rule?

Two reasons: Because only a few hundred km’s away to the north is Indonesia, a muslim country whuch has long had aspirational expansionist tendencies and has traditionally been regarded with some wariness by Australia, while further north is Communist China, a state with very definite expansionist and imperial tendencies, and a desire to make the South Pacific a Chinese lake.
  
  On that basis, forewarned is definitely fore-armed, and the Australians are taking measures appropriate to the situation as they perceive it..

    When I was a kid the Vietnam War was justified along the same lines and Australia became involved with some enthusiasm; NZ a little more reluctantly.
    As it happens China has used their cheque book and fountain pen to assert dominance over a myriad of countries and all the flash gunships in the world can’t do much about that.

      MCos, Indonesia has an ever increasing population that has to feed itself. It also has a massive Military which it must keep employed for fear that it may turn on it’s own government.
      Indonesia is also a very very corrupt country, so much so that any Indonesian citizen makes Shane Jones look like a saint.
      This corrupt country was and to a degree still is the staging post for boat people setting out to illegally enter Australia. These illegal immigrants are mostly from Muslim countries and once inside Australia albeit illegally, it was and still is feared they would become ‘sleepers’ until informed by their various Mosques that some for of uprising/take over was required.
      Don’t forget, the UK has been somewhat taken over by Muslims already whereby some Counties are administered under Sharia Law.
      Australia does not want these people doing the same to Australia. If you go to Lakemba in NSW, you will find it has already happened. Look at the website below.

  The Aus mineral industry is captured by Chinese interests so the US will be seeking to counter that. Chinese lay long term plans for supply.

  Maggy, Australia has the worlds largest Muslim population (Indonesia) right outside it’s front door.
  Australia is also is well aware of Chinese ambitions in the South Pacific and South China Seas.
  Australian Defence Forces were run down during their Rudd, Gillard, Rudd governments who like ours, were anti US.
  Australia also honours it’s commitments to it’s allies which is something we don’t currently do. Yes, I am aware we are increasing our stock of military hardware, but it’s largely incompatible with that of our only remaining allie (Australia).

    I have just tried to watch that, but I can’t. I just can’t stand her – for her behaviour in Parliament and, as we’ve seen again today, her behaviour since.
    
    I spent large parts of my youth in Masterton, and the wider Wairarapa, and the biggest impediment to Maori progressing was themselves. Shitty behaviour, shitty attitudes, shitty parenting and with a lot of folk absolutely no thought for tomorrow.
    
    I’ve hunted with Maori on pigs and deer, worked in forestry with them, in shearing gangs up and down the lower-North Island and drunk with them later and I’ve seen plenty get ahead with their own businesses and home ownership. People I’m proud to call friends and who I’ve learned a lot from.
    
    I’ve also witnessed the worst brutality and predation by Maori on other Maori and Pakeha alike. Multi-generational appalling lifestyles funded by welfare, soaked in piss and devoid of decency and any hope.
    
    The difference? Under-developed personal responsibility, shitty parenting, victim mentality and shitty tribal us versus them mindsets.

I see Genter’s muppets in NZTA excluded 1000 submissions on her EV scheme, saying they only counted as one as from the same Electronic Signature (Nationals website).
Seems OK to use Greenpeace’s dubious 40,000 submissions to shut down the Oil & Gas industry, but not from National supporters using similar technology.
It seems Ms Genter is involved in some serious dubious behaviour of late – Where’s the letter!!!.

NZ First is going to scuttle Stuart Nash’s plan to test drugs at music festivals over the summer. NZF MP Darroch Ball was quoted thus:

NZ First law and order spokesperson Darroch Ball said drug testing could legitimise and encourage drug use.

“We’re acting at the wrong end here. We’re being very reactionary if we think it’s okay to start saving lives or to start protecting people after the drug has been taken or after it’s been purchased,” he said.

But someone forgot to tell the Boss:

But when asked by 1 NEWS if his party was opposed to drug testing at festivals, NZ First leader Winston Peters said he “wouldn’t want to give you an answer now. I don’t know if you’re correct about that”.

No-one can possibly be sure that their “ethical” or “organic” choices are actually better, they have to close their eyes and pretend/hope.

  I’d convene an inquiry and hire a QC (female preferably) to chair it.
  
  I’d also organise a working group of disaffected PR consultants who can have a conversation with each other before reporting back to the inquiry.
  
  I’d also organise 4-5 star motel accommodation for the partners of the disaffected PR folk in a nice location – so they can relax before providing the loving support their stressed partners will require before, during and after attending the working group.

    The age in NH was raised to 16 earlier this year after a two year campaign. Objections included a need for pregnant women or servicemen going overseas to marry before they left. A thirteen year old child was married a few years ago.

Investment intentions and profit expectations of firms have fallen “to dismal levels”, accord to ANZ in its latest Business Outlook survey.

The September ANZ Business Outlook Survey saw headline confidence fall
2 points, with a net 54 per cent of respondents reporting that they expect general
business conditions to deteriorate in the year ahead – the lowest since April 2008.

Firms’ expectations for their own activity over the year ahead fell 1 point,
the fourth fall in a row, and the lowest read since April 2009.

    Sadly, I’ve just seen the news that my former place of work, Mars Petcare is closing down. 150 Whanganui jobs are going down the drain, not to mention the work done by companies who contract to Mars:
    
    Mars Petcare is planning to close its Whanganui factory at the end of 2020, affecting 152 staff.
    
    Mars announced today that it intends to move production of cat food pouches to a facility in Thailand.
    
    The American-owned family company has been operating in Whanganui for 26 years after buying the former Lucky Petfood business in Castlecliff. It held a series of celebrations in May last year for its 25th anniversary. Some staff have been with the company since the Lucky Petfood days.

    I got a job at Mars in 2002, after being made redundant by another employer. It wasn’t the job I would have chosen, I hated working rotating shifts (especially weekends and nights), and when I started as a casual, the money was crap. When I left four years later I was in a leadership position, still doing shifts, and earning reasonable coin.
    
    The work was hard, but you could go home at the end of a shift knowing you’d worked as part of a team. Many of the people I worked with are still there, and it’s them I’m feeling for this evening.
    
    The loss of 150 jobs will hurt Whanganui, which has just been starting to prosper in the last couple of years. Sadly, I think this closure will be one of many around the country over the next couple of years unless the Government makes it easier for firms to do business here.

Wreck1080 asked me yesterday “what my thoughts on the Moon landing were” .So I did some thinking. The moon landings were an amazing success because the engineers developed highly sophisticated models that were used to predict whether the landings could occur. And the models were accurate and the landings went generally flawlessly.     With the Health and Safety Nazis running the show, they lucky to get a cab from the hotel to the launch pad. No one is going to sign off a mission where there is fairly good chance they won’t get back, which is what they did in 1969. Armstrong got down with about 30 seconds of fuel. If he ballsed up the landing, and damaged the lander, they would never have got home. There were not many redudency measures if things didn’t work properly, as was seen in Apollo 13.

  Actually, I must admit he couldn’t have drunk the alarmist stuff as he died in 1988, but his theories do suggest that there may be an issue in the way most people understand the Greenhouse Theory.
