  Definitely a photo shop job. Note the hard lines where her face overlays Arafat’s. In fact if you Google Golriz images you will find the original of her that was used. Also, Goriz was only 23 when Arafat died.

What a strange country we live in when it is illegal for prison authorities to install bugs (eavesdropping devices) in orisons unless they get a Court warrant. I thought this was a quite valid means of maintaining order in prisons. If prisoners do not want to be overheard they should not be planning illegal activities in prison.
The Germans quite happily bugged Stalag Luft III and other prison camps in WW2. The inmates there (including Kiwis) had not committed any crime. The found one bug and connected it to the electric light when the knew the Commandant would be listening in.

        The ‘hairy man’ (not person) refers to the vagina of the Maori chieftainess who sheltered Te Rauparaha by standing over him as he cowered in a kumara pit when his tribe was under attack by Waikato Maori under Te Wherowhero. Hence, he looked up at the hairy man whose protection enabled him to survive and live to fight another day.

When Ardern was electioneering, a question of a royalty on bottled water heading to China led to consideration of a tax on water for irrigation. Being suggested at 1 cent to 2 cents a cubic metre – a difference of one amount or twice as much – it became such a perceived uncertainty for rural voters that it was all shoved sideways into the Tax Working Group, and with an impetuous Captain’s Call was promised would not come into effect this term of Government.

The Tax Working Group ended up recommending a Capital Gains Tax, but – without the blessing of Winston Peters – any Capital Gains Tax was flung out of the cot and another impetuous Captain’s Call promised it would not be considered again while Jacinda is leader.

In what seems a vast contrast, uncertainty doesn’t seem to worry people voting for New Zealand First and in particular for Winston.
So about 182,000 New Zealanders give him their vote, seemingly happy for him to do with it as he wishes – even if it does appear now that a majority really hoped he would go with National (which may be who yesterday he claimed “The fact is New Zealand First, right now, as a party of the centre, is the National Party, when it had a capital N”)

So Labour were worried about Election uncertainty, but about 7.2% of voters embraced it – let Winston do as he will, and that’s after he knows the result of everyone else’s vote, and after he has negotiated with the ultimate in self-interest conflicts with other parties over policy, so that quite an amount of that is no longer what people voted for either.

And now it seems a new possibility emerges: Winston Peters admits there’s a ‘succession plan’ for New Zealand First leadership.
Will New Zealand First tell voters before the next Election who will take over from Winston?

  Rejection of CGT had nothing to do with Peters. Labour always campaigned on a platform of any tax changes being presented in the 2020 campaign, so there was never any intention to make the change this term, requiring NZF support.
  What scuppered the tax was that neither Ardern nor Robertson was capable of arguing for it, in the face of National’s campaign against it. Personally I believe CGT would be a good thing (the more comprehensive the better, and accompanied with income tax reductions). But it is telling that the PM, and the MOF are so superficial they cannot grasp the benefits, nor argue their case.

    No. I don’t want to pay tax on what is basically just inflation.
    
    A house is worth the same house 10 years later (minus a lot of maintenance). Whether the price has doubled is *irrelevant*: that is no real gain to the owner.
    
    The brightline test was quite enough of a CGT to ensure longer term owners who provide valuable rental don’t get hit with CGT.

In a public post on Thursday, Labour list MP Raymond Huo said he was bombarded with phone calls from Chinese constituents regarding Key’s visit.

“Key has been a master in understanding the Chinese notion of ‘guanxi’.”

Guanxi, Huo explained, is the Chinese system of trust and personal connection that means entrepreneurs or politicians can rely on promises without legal basis.

“And according to the community, [Key’s] former National Party is the only political party in New Zealand that understands China as a country and the Chinese community as a voting bloc.

I remember back in the 80’s when we came under intense pressure from the US not to sell our lamb to Iran. So who the hell were we suppose to sell it to, the UK? The same guys that gave us the rissole when they joined the EEC?

        What a silly question. My understanding, is that we didn’t have much trade with Germany after the Nazis came to power but Britain did. Obviously once war broke out all trade ceased as in any armed conflict between countries. Last time I looked we weren’t at war with anyone at the present time, except maybe the War on Drugs.

  These are questions that must be asked. If it’s OK for our media to go gaga over alleged Russian interference in the US elections , then why is there so little attention given to United Front activities here .

Talking to my daughter (who is a teacher) last night, and she told me about some comments at a teacher’s conference she was recently at where Chris Hipkins was a main speaker. One of the the comments among the teachers: “He certainly knows how to TALK (sarc) it up doesn’t he?” This after Hipkins talked about “always being on the side of the teachers”.
The sarc was the teacher, not my comment. My daughter is telling me the teachers (not unions) are not at all happy with Hipkins, or generally Liebour at the moment.
Maybe there is still hope for this country.

  What aren’t they happy about? Not getting enough money? Tell your daughter she is privileged earning tax-free income for life, since her wages come from the taxes paid by workers in the private sector (otherwise known as “the real world”). The PAYE on her payslip is just a paper transaction. Everyone on the government payroll essentially pays NO tax for their entire LIVES for this undeniable reason. Not only do they enjoy tax-free income, all the government-provided services they use will be paid by others who also have to provide for themselves. Yes, a bit of a rant but it blows my mind how many people I know are studying to be a teacher or nurse as if money grows on one billion non-existent trees! The ever-growing government gravy train pulled by a shrinking percentage of net taxpayers in the private sector just can’t continue.

  I thought Wayne Barnes wimped out last night. He couldn’t yellow card Tendai Mtawarira quickly enough for a nasty spear tackle. Had he referred the incident to the TMO as he should have, it is likely Mtawarira would have been given a red card. He took the Japanese played above the horizontal, then drove him into the ground with force, causing the player to land on his head and shoulder. IMHO, it met the red card threshhold.
  
  I hope Mtawarira is cited for this post-match. It was a more serious incident than several of the red cards earlier in the tournament.

    Yeah its a worry that both refs last night had shocking games.
    Barnes was blind for the while first half leaving the Japanese offside which was the only reason they were still in the game at half time and then the spear tackle that was the most clear cut red card of the tournament.
    It would have been a red 5 years ago before the new rules.

    I disagree. He obviously had a clear view from the opposite angle to the TV camera, was absolutely certain of what he’d seen and reacted swiftly to avoid anything getting out of hand between the two teams. How many times have you seen that sort of incident spark a brawl?

  I watched the first half, which was an absolute cracker in which the Brave Blossoms outplayed SA and were unlucky not to be ahead on the scoreboard. Unfortunately usual transmission was resumed in the second half and SA ran away with the match, however well done Japan in getting this far, you can be proud of your team.

My daughter and her husband bought a house in Hobsonville Point about a year ago. Being right in the middle of the development (physically) they are very aware of what is and isn’t going down.
Backing onto their back garden fence is a row of 3 story units that were completed at the same time as her unit. Well who would guess, after a year most of them have still not sold. Over the last week or so they noticed the houses were getting a makeover and thought they had finally sold. But all was not as it appeared, the makeover was so the developers could present a smarter house hoping to make the house more attractive.
So where are all these 10s of 1000s of people struggling to get into houses?

      She keeps it immaculate. Another across the road the tenant moved out and it was sold and that also was immaculate.

  The so called “housing crisis” was never about the lack of homes for ownership. Labour tried to muddy the waters with their Kiwibuild bullshit.
  It was always about there not being enough rentals for people to get into (and in my opinion not responsible enough to be given a rental, but that’s another story).
  For example in Dargaville you cannot rent a two or three bedroom house for love nor money, there is absolutely nothing available. It’s so bad you have people living in cars down by the Wairoa river desperate to rent anything. You can debate whether these people deserve social housing or not but the fact remains these people and in some cases their children are homeless.
  If you drive through Dargaville you will see plenty of houses for sale, also just out of town there is a new subdivision going up, so no shortage of houses for sale.
  Something doesn’t smell quite right…….

  It’s not really an issue of culture, although it is an issue of identity. Catalans are much more closely related to the French and Italians than they are to the rest of Spain.
  
  There are plenty of other independence movements around Europe, where small historic kingdoms have been subsumed into relatively recent modern nations.
  
  Even Cornwall, that’s been part of England for over a thousand years has an independence campaign. It just seems that Madrid has a spectacular inability to deal with the Catalans without making things worse.
  
  If they’d actually held an official referendum, as Scotland had, I suspect at that point the result would also have been to reject independence…now, I’m not so sure.

Research shows a trillion trees could be planted to capture huge amount of carbon dioxide.

Given one hectare allows roughly 1,000 seedlings to be planted, and New Zealand’s entire land area being 268,021 km² – so, multiplied by 100 hectares a square km and 1,000 saplings per hectare, would give 26,802,100,000 trees to cover New Zealand – the whole bloody country.
[Note: Shane’s promised billion trees is therefore about one twenty seventh of our total land mass]

And a trillion, or: 1,000,000,000,000 divided by 26,802,100,000 gives 37.31.
So a trillion trees would require land equivalent to 37.3 times New Zealand’s total area.

And in 28 to 40 years, around Carbon-Free 2050, unless all those trillion trees could be exported to China and used as building materials rather than paper pulp, they will start falling over, rotting, and generally littering up the place – 37.3 New Zealands worth – and re-entering the atmosphere.

Which is what is wrong with a lot of this scientific crap –
they aren’t really thinking about the future.

Okay, in fairness to the Right Honourable Mr Peters he did say there were some good people here at Three. I guess those ‘good people’, Mr Peters, must be the ones who don’t challenge you, don’t do their jobs, the ones who you’ve been able to cowardly bully into submission with your constant threat of legal action when challenged.

So in reality, in your eyes, there are very few good people then.

Yes, after hearing your comments, your heartless and classless revelling, Your Right Honourable Sir, I sort of thought, you know what, if this is the type of person I’d have to be to enjoy longevity in politics then I want no part of it.

As a sports person I understand competition, I understand your adversaries’ right to challenge you, to test you, to ask the hard question and from time to time to better you.

I also learned to respect their skill, respect them, to shake hands and move on, to regroup and come back better myself for it.

It would appear your politics lacks this basic human respect.

You know what Winnie, sorry, Your Right Honourable Good Sir Mr Peters, I’d rather endure a Labour-Green government governing alone than another minute of you holding my country selfishly to ransom.

Yeah that Red-Green lot have some hair-brained schemes but at least for the most part they’re good people.

They’re good people with a genuine cause and a desire to help others.

    He said that he rode that fast because he was allowed and it was too dangerous to ride on the road because he had already been knocked of his bike.

  Except it’s not a shared footpath in a residential area, it’s a two way cyclepath along a motorway primarily for commuting to the city. And if you look at the picture you’ll see a walker in the wrong lane, and kids across both lanes. If they stayed in the correct lane then a faster cyclist could overtake safely.

The scaremongering is made even worse by the failure to properly recognise what is natural erosion and what is cause by ‘climate change’. The erosion at the mouth of the Waikato is not unique – rivers change their paths to the sea constantly, particularly where the underlying soil is sand or alluvial despoit. Also remember vast areas of the east coast the UK have been lost to erosion over the past centuries. I don’t see anyone claiming that is because of climate change. These idiots need to acknowledge that just as the sun has a major impact on climate and temperatures, so to the weather (not the climate) has a major impact on the rate of erosion – and accretion – around the coast. Oh, sorry – that wouldn’t fit the specified theme …

    I have it on good authority that retirement villages have an average occupancy rate of seven years per unit (ie, from the ‘Leasees arrival until their death) and work on that premise when budgetting / building etc.

Radio NZ has become so Maorified, it’s debatably treasonous.

Have a listen to the following item on the Radio NZ site. It calls for “decolonisation”.

It talks of pre-Western settlement days when Maori had their own “science and medicine” that “worked for us” and laments that New Zealand’s education, justice, political, and health systems were imported.

Your tax money goes into producing this sort of crap. It began in earnest with the Maori takeover of Radio NZ orchestrated by Wily Willie Jackson, a Labour MP – but National was in power at the time and looked the other way.

A reflection of the Leftist push to curtail free speech? Certainly an example of how widely they are trying to define “hate speech”.

With “snowflake” included you have to wonder whether the obviously Leftist Corbynist recruited from Britain to run the Human Rights Commission was asked for input.

* Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has offered political support to Three following his scathing comments about the sale of MediaWorks’ TV arm.

Appearing on Monday’s episode of The Project, the New Zealand First leader reiterated he is “seriously sorry” about his comments at the party’s annual convention in Christchurch on Saturday, which included a harsh “good riddance” to certain MediaWorks staff.

Peters changed his tune on Monday, offering his apologies to the “husbands, wives and children” included in the 520 jobs on the line following Friday’s sale announcement. *
