      That’s what I read into that as well. It’s a rare and fair insight into the mind of a Trump Supporter and how they can rightly justify supporting him. He does articulate a voice that is often not even heard, let alone listened to.
      
      I agree in a large part with the theme of the article. I too, think that Trump is a jerk, but at the same time, I see the Democrats as too far left.

      The one thing the dialogue in that article gets wrong, that derails the whole thing, is this: “Trump clearly used public power to ask a foreign leader to dig up dirt on his political opponent.”
      
      That is said, and agreed, so non-chalantly as if it was just obvious (which it isn’t) and uses it to make the Trump supporter in to someone who has no principles.

    A suggestion, read it first then comment. What makes the article interesting is precisely because it is the New York Times and it generally puts Orange Man in a good light.

According to the Herald (behind thepaywall) It appears that there was a deep schism in NZ Fist –

Complaints and controversy about how Winston Peters ran his election campaign,

how he litigated against National politicians prior to negotiations and

how he undertook the negotiations that culminated in anointing Ardern as Prime Minister.

You’d have to have a heart of stone not to piss yourself laughing at them for being so gullible as to put their faith in Peters, wouldn’t you?

  Stuff has a poll on “Who NZ First voters wanted in Government before and after the Government was actually formed” with a flip from “perhaps” National 51%, Labour “about” 27%, to Labour 48% and National 33%.
  
  Those polled before knowledge of Winston’s decision may be more likely to be true – why lie? – than those after his announcement – why be seen to be wrong?
  
  Which kind of renders the survey as valueless – two results, and reversed results at that, in the one survey is always a little worrying – but obviously if the first result is accurate, it points to the Coalition being anti-democratic in the sense that the majority has not ruled.
  
  A so-called “democratic” voting system that allows one vote per person, but then sees a large number give one person about 180,000 votes to do with as he wishes, after he knows the results of all other voting, is fucking ridiculous.
  
  And any suggestion that the final New Zealand First vote is “the whole NZF Caucus” is not proven in any way, by any supportive evidence
  
  Perhaps we would even find a judicial review unfounded, as Winston is entitled to make his decision in private?

  We’re about 2 yrs into the govt, which is about the time any govt with Winston in it falls apart. It’s uncanny how precise he is in ruining everything he touches.

    Yep , two years is normally when a coalition involving NZ first falls apart , the other sign is the economy tanking and it’s traditional for labour to leave office with the country in a recession.
    
    Next year could see Labour’s vote reduced to Cunliffe levels and at least one coalition partner out of parliament.

  Whilst I agree that NZF is primarily Winston Peter’s and that Winston makes all the decisions, I disagree that the rest of NZF wanted National.
  
  If you looked at the NZF policies and the other Mps statements it is obvious the party is left leaning. Simply looking at members Facebook postings shows a hatred of National and there policies. If that wasn’t enough, Shane Jones came from Labour and was clearly Winstons chosen successor.
  
  NZF was never going with National.

  Happy. You may be a new New Zealander so allow me to explain. Getting hammered is a fairly normal approach to alcohol in this country. Has been for ever. From mid teens til, well, death for some, it’s as common as fish and chips. You may have missed those years of young partying in our culture where you would have been surprised to find a non drinker. I hazard half the first sexual experiences of the readers here were lubricated as it were. Still, I suppose it’s much worse if the wrong people have their fun.

    ……however the difference is that this involves Labour , the party in government , who make a supreme virtue of telling everyone else , what to do how to do it , when to do it , keeping safe , blah blah blah .Included in that is wowserism around liquour licesning etc and around child/youf safety blah blah.
    
    So when they get caught out , not doing as they preach , or being the most transparent and open
    etc yes it becomes a very big deal and rightly so.
    
    This is not about young people having fun , it’s about hypocrisy in high office.

    Winston is also horribly litigious. I don’t know how he affords it but he sure causes nuisance as it pleases him. Winston filing proceedings, even if not actively pursued, puts the other party to the expense to answer or Winston may win by default. It’s a roguish game he plays strongly.

  All NZ ‘journalists’ are terrified of Winston. Expect them to go very litely on him. Shane Jones threatens UTU but Winston has history on actually delivering on his threats.
  
  I still laugh at Duncan Garner apologising to Winston publicly for critising him for being late to interviews. They think they need him more than he needs them, they are of course wrong.

National floating a policy idea about fining parents whose offspring leave school early and are not in work, education or training. I doubt it will get far, but does at least shine a light on a serious problem – young aimless people building a career on the sofa.

There’s an incredible piece of journalism on Spinoff and Newshub. Incredibly bad, that is. The journalist, Reed Fleming should be deeply ashamed.

(Reed Fleming is a former Labour Party staffer and Victoria University public policy graduate. That’s a surprise, not much grasp of public policy then.)

Just to mention two of his examples, for a start, Ms Bennett could have left school at 15, as that was the leaving age at the time. Then she went to work, Mr Fleming tells us. As did Ms Allen, after leaving school at 16, the leaving age at the time..

Paula Bennett left school at 16 and started work in a stationery shop. Under National’s plan her parents, Bob and Lee, would’ve been asked to stump up $3000. Do as I say, not as I do!

Paula Bennett isn’t the only MP who would’ve been hit by National’s School Leaver Tax. Kiri Allan, a Labour List MP, dropped out of school at 16 and went to work at KFC before eventually studying at Victoria University. Hopefully, the wages from the Colonel would’ve covered the whopping $3000 fine.

  A problem is young people are maturing earlier and the schools are not keeping up.
  An 8:30 am start is not suitable for many teenagers whose hormones have been arranged for a different time zone.
  The curriculum seems dumbed down too to the level of boring. When everyone is treated as equal at the mediocrity of the close-to-lowest (to match teaching beliefs?) are drop outs not to be expected?

    You are right about the curriculum being dumbed down. There is only so PC ideology that a young brain can absorb and then it would seem to be no time left for what is now known as the STEMS subjects. Unless you are Asian. They find the time.

  If this is a true reflection of National’s “policy idea”
  then they need to think again.
  I can think of very few teenagers who would be influenced to stay at school and/or take up further training or risk their parents/caregivers being fined.
  There are many reasons why young people leave school. Fining parents/caregivers will make no difference.
  Added to which, how would the fine money be administered, collected and spent?
  Is this really a possible policy or is someone making this up?

      How about National providing an apprenticeship for each one leaving at 16, thats what it was in my day.
      
      Those going to college or uni stayed on for A levels and the others went to tech and ot apprenticeships, building, electronics, hairdressing etc

  It’s increasingly apparent that she doesn’t want to be Prime Minister, she wants to be the Queen, or maybe the Duchess of Cambridge, above and outside of politics and there rather to look lovely, to dignify the nation and bring charity, grace and light to the less fortunate.   On her first day on the campaign trail , after rolling Little , she was asked about the Reserve bank interest rate meeting that day , she didn’t know it was on . The Media Party gave her a free pass ( had she been a ‘Tory’ , and not the internationalist socialist that the Media party know her to be) , she’d have been crucified and made unelectable by that same Media Party.
  
  They did that to Don Brash . The Media Party are activists in the political scene and go well beyond their self proclaimed role as the so called 4 th estate.

  She does nothing because she had no solid plan of progress. She has no hierarchy of values or principles, just eclectic ideas borne out of emotional wants and indoctrination.
  
  A hierarchy of values requires understanding “first principles”, which also requires the ability to actually think, not just the swilling around of emotional claptrap in a contorted mind.
  
  Communicating genuine ideas and principles requires forming “original thoughts” as one goes through the mental process of understanding how those ideas and principles could be applied in the real world.
  
  This last point is important because it explains why Labour say stupid things, do stupid things and have been caught dozens, if not hundreds of times issuing written or verbal statements that are either straight plagiarising or complete nonsense.
  
  Since neither Jacinda or the Labour leaders are capable of original thought, and certainly do not understand first principles, everything has to be copy and paste, or in some cases complete filler.

  igm, I long ago learnt that the internet is my friend when things go awry in other countries. I even miss the 6pm ‘news’ on local TV because it is so one sided and deliberately censors information. I set ‘The Chase’ so it stops recording the moment it finishes, and I can zip through the TV1 promo ads. There is a wealth of information on the streaming services.

NZ Post courier deliveries seem to be going the way of their postal services. My new laptop ordered Thursday, reached Wellington Friday early a.m. then bounced around in a courier van all day before being returned to the depot undelivered. Now have to wait until Monday (hopefully).

  Well its been a Yuge week, going to the rugby and calling Japan China, then getting 143rd billing at the UN behind the vacuous, venal and crippled.
  
  Then having to pretend a pullaside with the US President is a bilateral, when she is the last english speaker to have met with him, and at the same time the Australian PM was getting full guest of honour treatment.
  
  To top it all, some weird teenager is going to pip her for the Nobel she has worked so hard for!
  
  The poor girl must be exhausted, no wonder she needs a rest.
  
  Now she has to decide if she is “very concerned”, or just “sad” and (pouty) that the world’s greatest navigator was ambushed on arrival in Gizzy, and offed a few of the natives (having been to Gizzy and met a few of them, who could blame him!).

Cutting through the media noise on “impeachment”. There is no impeachment inquiry, and no subpoenas have been issued. It takes a vote on the floor of the House to trigger that, which hasn’t happened. This is all political theatre and the media is eating it up.

What is portrayed as an “impeachment inquiry” is actually just a made-for-cable-TV political soap opera. The House of Representatives is not conducting a formal impeachment inquiry. To the contrary, congressional Democrats are conducting the 2020 political campaign.

The House has not voted as a body to authorize an impeachment inquiry. What we have are partisan theatrics, proceeding under the ipse dixit of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). It raises the profile, but not the legitimacy, of the same “impeachment inquiry” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) previously tried to abracadabra into being without a committee vote.

Moreover, there are no subpoenas. As Secretary Pompeo observed in his fittingly tart response on Tuesday, what the committee chairmen issued was merely a letter. Its huffing and puffing notwithstanding, the letter is nothing more than an informal request for voluntary cooperation. Legally, it has no compulsive power. If anything, it is rife with legal deficiencies.

The Democrats, of course, hope you don’t notice that the House is not conducting a formal impeachment inquiry. They are using the guise of frenetic activity by several standing committees — Intelligence, Judiciary, Foreign Affairs, Oversight and Reform, Financial Services, and Ways and Means — whose normal oversight functions are being gussied up to look like serious impeachment business.

So don’t let the media fool you. By the way, leaders engage is so-called ‘quid pro quo’ all the time. It’s part of the give and take between countries pursuing their own interests. If Trump was asking the Ukrainians to assist AG Barr’s legitimate Justice Dept investigation into the events around the 2016 campaign, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s normal.

I’m sure National want to be in the big seats again, and they will be of course, some time. But there are benefits to being in Opposition, and I’d put money on Labour looking back on those days with affection.

Big pay packets, perks, no accountability but many conversations, plenty of time to take potshots at others’ policy, and plenty of time to develop robust and costed policy.

Labour should be happy though – they get to do all that in government with even bigger pay packets and perks. What’s not to like?

  Historical abuse and unacceptable sexual behaviour in the eyes of the Catholic Church are scarcely the same thing. This is the type of thing the ignorant and lazy msm get up to Maggy. Charles Drinnan appears to have had consensual sexual relations with an adult female. It may be beyond the boundary of the vow of celibacy but it is not as yet illegal I don’t think.

    It’s none of my business if Drennan broke his celibacy vows… seems perfectly understandable to me.
    
    My question was specifically about his membership on the Survivor’s group.
    
    If he was a survivor of State or Church abuse then I can’t see why he needed to resign from the Survivor Group.
    
    If he wasn’t a State or Church abuse survivor, why was he appointed to be in that Group?
    
    I would think the presence of a Church representative could be very intimidating to some survivors.

    PB – the local banks are okay, but for most of them (State-backed Kiwbank excepted) the credit ratings are lower than for the big banks.
    
    The Swiss last year, rejected by 76 per scent to 24 per cent the idea of banning banks from creating capital and leaving this all to the central bank.

So Bp. Drennan has resigned over allegations of sexual impropriety with a young girl. Not criminal, but scandalous, and if accurately reported to the media, entirely appropriate he resign. I say if accurate, because I trust neither Dew nor Pope Francis as far as I can throw them.

All of which is very bad because this gives Francis the opportunity to import another LGBT alphabet loving, pan-Amazonian, pantheist blowhard into the NZCCB and further wrekovate the Church here.

And in the interview, quite bizarrely, she did not mention Cook once. It was all about the genius of Maori navigators and canoes. WTF?

  Just an addendum to my comment. Next year is the 250th anniversary of the discovery of the East Coast of Australia by Cook. He sailed over there after spending 1769 charting New Zealand. He famously landed at and named Botany Bay.
  
  The celebration is to be called “Cook 250“. It will prominently feature Cook’s achievements. Another example of how culturally, politically, and economically, New Zealand and Australia are diverging.

  The 250 year commemoration of Cook’s Landing seems to have divided into 2 separate programmes a couple of years back.
  One arm became Tuia 250 and seems to be a celebration of the 1st arrival of Pacific waka/va’a to NZ…. The waka arrived this morning in Gizzy harbour… There’s celebrations/activities for the next 5 days under Tuia 250 .
  
  The Cook-Endeavour story is being subsumed into just another tale of ocean voyaging.
  The Endeavour arrives on Tuesday morning (8th Oct).
  
  Te Ha is the other arm.. and seems to be where the meeting of 2 cultures lies…
  
  On top of all the Tuia-250 activities, there’s a fortnight of Arts Festival happening also.

      We have to walk a wee way up the hill to see out to Mahia Peninsula and Young Nick’s Head…our back neighbour has the commanding view of the outer Bay.. (we are sheltered from the south and face to the North).
      We’ve just returned from a walk over the hill (lunch down at the Wharf)…There’s a smallish crowd (a few 100 max) on the City-side of the Turanganui River listening to Kapa Haka. (Nothing like the 10,000 folk that was forecast).

This question has been swirling around in my mind for ages – “how do we show young people in this country that they have been **conned** by the Left?”

Given that the Left now controls everything from teacher training colleges to schools, universities, media, councils, government (thanks to Dutschke’s “long march”) it’s **extremely difficult** to tell the young people what has happened.

It would be good if a few of them read this blog but I very much doubt it.

    That’s a pretty short time frame to call ‘average’. Since the data set they are using goes back to 1909, they should use the average going back that far to look at climate. Anything shorter is just weather.

    Anyone in despair about temperature, move to Cape Otway in Victoria.
    here a few years stats.
    Over 122 year average maximum 1864 t0 2019
    17.3 c average
    1871 to 1900 19 c 1.7c warmer
    1901 to 1930 16.9 .4 c cooler
    1931 to 1960 16.3 1 degree cooler
    1961 to 1990 16.9 .4 c cooler
    1981 to 2010 17 c .3 cooler
    These are real stats over a century, the warmest part of these figures are first 30 years, average 1.7C hotter, then right through from 1901, all 30 year averages are cooler.
    The differences in these 30 year averages are very small.
    Reason the measurements are so accurate, it is a lighthouse as it was back in history, the surrounds have not been changed by humans to any extent.
    Whilst the rest of Australia has warming according the experts, Cape Otway area is in a cocoon.
    Doing statistics over a few years with figures that have been rounded up can be misleading.
    I am convinced Cape Otway tells me this area is not changing in temperature, maybe someone will tell me why I am wrong in this assumption.

    The advantage for long term comparisons is that airport temperatures are publicly available, and are immune to the usual ‘homogenisation’ bias usually applied by NIWA. I am aware of the UHI effect though, and I would expect CHCH to be somewhat affected when you look at the increase in buildings and taxiways/ramp space over the last 5 years.
    
    As an aside – try to find other NZ centre temperature records from the taxpayer funded NIWA. (Hint: They won’t publish them as it presumably will blow their bias.)

  About 48% of Swedes belong to the Church of Sweden, a Lutheran, i.e., Protestant, church. And, only 0.4% are Roman Catholics. [2017 Poll; see Wikipedia.]
  
  Consequently, referring to Greta Thunberg as ‘St Greta’ is ridiculous. It is almost 100% certain that she is not, has no desire to be, nor will ever be, an adherent of that foul institution, the Roman Catholic church. Personally, I doubt she or her family are even religious. Indeed, one would certainly hope they’re not.
  
  So please, KBers, drop the ‘St Greta’. It is entirely inappropriate.

It seems that the Catholic Church has belatedly learned some valuable lessons on how to handle a sexually related complaint. The young woman who was the recipient of sexual advances from Bishop Drennan submitted a complaint, which was dealt with in a timely manner and investigated independently. Drennan was stood down during the investigation. He (to his credit) co-operated in the investigation, offered his resignation which was swiftly accepted. No cover-up, no “old boys” network in play. He was a talented bishop going places in the Church, yet that did not make a difference.

  2. Apparently a new protocol came out in June which required him to report to Rome about it. This is not accurate. He doesn’t have to report anything. That’s the job of the NUNCIO.
  3. But Dew reported it, and he doesn’t say he got permission from the second complainant to do so. So he broke her confidence?
  4. And now he talks about it in the media? Did he break her confidence again?
  
  So, Dew knew about Drennan some time ago. What did he do? Not a lot it seems. Because he could always have reported it to the Nuncio and Rome would have dealt with it ages ago.
  
  Dew does not come off well at all despite his eagerness to shaft Drennan [Drennan has rightly resigned, but he is not a LGBT loving pantheist like Dew].

  Saw a TV news item the other day of a second hand shop practically giving stuff away to the needy (in Taranaki I think). One of the women lining up to get free stuff had 10 children. Moaned about how difficult it all was.

I have a treasured copy of J C Beaglehole’s definitive biography of Captain James Cook, which was first published in 1974 and which I re-read every 7 years or so. The British Admiralty laid out strict guidelines and protocols for the interraction of Naval Officers with indigenous people found in places such as the Pacific. Captain Cook was liable for his actions and decisions. He always landed with a party of armed marines and they only fired their weapons against the locals as defensive measures and as a last resort. Revisionists of NZ history really need to read something authoritative, such as Beaglehole, before they paint Cook unfairly as trigger happy.

  The news media should have printed these which explain the what, where, how and why of these events rather than rely on the unreliable “oral history” versions handed down word of mouth for 250 years -[“Chinese whispers” style!]
  Also, nowhere have I seen any researched explanation of the beliefs, habits, and customs of Maori at that time.
  Maori still had a stone-age, animistic lifestyle with frequent warring between tribes. They had no idea that anyone like Cook existed.

      The Tuia 250 canoes arrived at Gisborne today. They couldn’t land on the foreshore because of the wind, so berthed at the Gisborne inner habour instead.
      
      The canoes are two Maori double-hull canoes, Haunui and Ngahiraka Mai Tawhiti, and Tipaerua, a Tahitian ocean-going outrigger canoe — a va’a moana.
      
      The Gisborne newspaper reports Jacinderella as saying the canoes’ arrival was an incredibly important day for Aotearoa (sic).
      
      The canoes will be part of a flotilla that will tour New Zealand ports until December.
      
      With the canoes will be the Cook’s Endeavour replica from the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, the Spirit of New Zealand from Auckland, and the R. Tucker Thompson from the Bay of Islands.
      
      The Spirit of NZ is a three-masted barquentine, built in 1986, and used for training young people. The R. Tucker Thompson is a a traditional gaff-rigged schooner.
      
      Not sure when the Endeavour arrived, or will arrive, at Gisborne. It sailed from Tauranga on Thursday with a crew of 19 professionals and 27 amateurs.
      
      Would anyone dared to have suggested that Britain be invited to supply current Royal marines (now mainly commandos) to re-enact the initial landing by their namesakes. Wouldn’t a request like that have sent into a tizzy the lachrymose British High Commissioner in Wellington.

But the thing that really concerns me is that it was addressed to both myself and my partner (I am living in her house, her name only on the property). So how did they come to the conclusion we were a couple? OK our names are obvious male and female, we are registered on the electoral roll at this address, but even that is not a conclusive proof of a relationship. Could I make some formal request to find out how they got our details, to see if they are farming information from places they shouldn’t?

I’ve noticed recently the widespread and heavy use by the left of the word ‘justice’ in their campaign labels.

An obvious con, of course, because of the implicit suggestion that any non-supporter is content with ‘injustice’.

I’ve looked to close to ten such ‘movements’ this week and without exception have a large and openly stated anti-capitalist and anti-freedom and liberty streaks. All call for greater government regulation and control of human affairs and more and more raids on taxpayers.

I’m over it. Now, whenever I see calls for ‘justice’ I see termites gnawing away at our hard-won freedoms.

Barring a major correction, I see NZ 30-50 years hence a socialist shithole and everyone wondering what the fuck just happened.

Why National aren’t going to be the next government.

2017 GE figures
Nats: 44%
Lab: 37%
NZF: 7%
Green: 6%

Yesterday there was a piece about 45% of NZF voters preferring that their party went with National as opposed to the 35% that wanted and got Labour.

So even if NZF Nat-preferring supporters switch to National that equates to a 3% addition to National’s numbers or 47%. Even factoring ACT’s sole MP that’s not going to get there.

Winning the battle for the remaining 20% of NZF voters would only add another 1.5% so we’re at 48.5%.

Now factor in the weed-smoking dolescum that ordinarily don’t turn out, and who thanks to the cannabis referendum will next time, and you have a real problem because most of their votes will go to the party offering free stuff – Greens & Labour.

All the stuff that gets us excited doesn’t even register on the interest-scale of the GNZP.

As I continue to say, Labour have 2020 sewn up it’s just whether they’ll need anyone else.

  All it takes is for NZ First to fall under the threshold, which is almost a given at this stage.
  That way the NZ First and other parties’ wasted votes will be 5-8% (depending on what parties are running) , let’s say 6%. Then just over 47% is required to win.
  If the Green Party fails to make the threshold, which I would say is 50/50 at this stage then as low as 44% could be enough for a single party majority

  Lets assume that the 45% of NZF had voted National. What would the government have looked like…
  
  Nats. 47.6%
  Lab 36.9%
  Greens 6.3%
  NZF 3.96%
  Act. 0.5%
  OTHER 4.6%
  
  Labour plus Greens 43.2
  National plus ACT 48.1
  
  However, now 8.5 % of the vote is wasted. National and act now have 52.6 of the votes that count, or 63 seats in a 120 seat parliament, and a 6 seat majority.

    Fair point, but look at the polling top right – Labour is polling 43% and the Green 5.5%
    
    Even using your Nat + Act %age they have more
    
    And to wrap it up in one post:
    
    Mcos, old people are already voting it’s young people that Labour have targeted here. It’s a bloody good political strategy too. If Nats come out against, as most of their voters are likely to want them to, they’ll just drive the new voters to Labour & Green.

      The poll that counts is the one at the ballot box. Historically, the Greens always poll higher than the actual vote they get, and at 5.5%, they do not have a lot of headroom..
      
      3 days before the last election, Colmar Brunton had the Greens on 8%. They polled 6.3
      
      The same poll had the Greens at 12% before the 2014 election, they polled 10.7%
      
      The greens were polling at 13s and 14% in 2011, they got 10.7%
      
      Polling at 9% in ’08, got 6.72.
      
      If the Greens are polling at 5.5%, they should be shitting bricks now.
