So Julie Anne Genter is being very generous with our money.

If all 50,000 public sector workers take up the offer, then at $750 average govt subsidy that amounts to $37.5 million.

“The discount initiative has been launched by the Associate Minister of Transport to improve health and reduce emissions.”
I’m not too sure about the health aspect. If the employees are biking to and from work every day, then it’s going to be raining and cold on many days.
And on emissions? I doubt there’ll be much reduction when you consider the emissions produced in the manufacture and shipping of 50,000 new e-bikes.

Genter also said “When staff bike to work it takes pressures off parking in places like Wellington Hospital and reduces congestion.”
Right so all the employer-provided cars can be sold off?
They’ll still need parking places for the bikes and more than likely covered, plus of course they’ll need charging facilities at all work places.
All that will cost many more $millions.
Pesky details.

    It’s not just for Wellington, but nationwide, councils, dhb, etc. should be interesting when an emergency call comes in for hospital staff and they get on their bikes. Even more interesting in winter when all bikes are left home so people can go to work dry and warm

    And speaking of plates, isn’t it high time e-bikes require registration? For example, red light runners and speedsters.

        That’s what I’m saying Sooty.
        Motor vehicle licensing is where you pay a fee to use your vehicle on public roads so an e-bike and pedal-powered bikes are no different.
        
        With anyone e-biking and pedalling to and from work, the hours involved will require lights on these vehicles, no doubt about it. Thus every single bike including those used by kids going to school must have a wof.
        
        To be honest I’m surprised the taxman hasn’t demanded registration and wofs for bikes already. Money for old rope.
        
        Another thing I’m suprised about not brought in as yet is compulsory insurance for all vehicles using the roads.
        Overseas you can’t have your vehicle tested for a wof if you don’t have insurance.

      Then there’s ACC. Motorists and motor-bikers contribute to ACC through registration and through the levy on petrol and diesel’s road user charges.

    Yes and that is exactky what will happen. Prosperous state sector workers being subsidised for weekend cycling. It makes me angry. The Greens seem to specialise in regressive policy.
    
    My informed guess is that betwen one and two percent of Wellington public servants ride bikes to work. The terrain and climate means you need access to a wardrobe of business clothes and showers. Some of the new office buildings are well equipped. But most of the older ones will have one or two mouldy showers in the basement. And where do you store your clothes?
    
    This scheme will have an immeasurable impact on any take up of commuting cycling.
    
    If there is a Green Labour Government after 2020 free of New Zealand First expect to see this stuff on steroids, culminating in an eventual ban on the importation of petroleum powered cars, SUVs, and light trucks. I predict a ban date of betwen 2030 and 2035.

      @Sydney… Think of the E-bikes (and E-cars) as being powered by ‘blood batteries’. Green dream?
      Folks need to do a bit of research on cobalt and pollutive lithium extraction. Not nice.
      Child slave labour in Congo and Bolivia especially.
      Technology will eventually save the concept no doubt.
      There is talk of lithium being extracted now from thermal fluid in NZ.

      Will building owners be mandated to convert existing spaces into changing rooms? (In some cases they will be premium in terms of cost per square metre)!
      
      After all with open plan offices in vogue it’s not like some civil servants will have a private office to change in anymore, not even some managers!
      
      Then what about those public servants that think, meh, why bother changing – lycra becomes the new “informal” dress code replacing suits – jeepers imagine that!

        Most open plan offices in the state sector now are noisy crowded shit holes. In most cases not even the CE has an office. Most agencies are moving to hot desking where you get a locker to store your stuff. But some numpties “claim” a desk by piling their crap all over it. This nightmare is being amplified by soaring numbers of public servants and contractors.

        @ Sydney Hot Desking will soon raise an ugly side affect, transmission of diseases, via keyboard. My wife when she hot desked went through a ton of sanitising wipes every day. Just think, some feral goes to the loo, comes back and starts typing… Did it wash its hands after the deed?. And some people eat lunch at said keyboard?

    I have worked in about 10 State Sector office buildings in Wellington. Only one had decent shower facilities and lockers to store your clothes. All the others have one or two mouldy showers surrounded by cardboard boxes of forgotten mouldy towels and gym gear. It is hideous.

        Tauranga Council are putting up a new “Parking” building primarily for Council employees with all the bike, shower and every conceivable facilities for the users.
        But construction work has stopped as building stopped as somebody has stuffed the construction – will probably have to be taken down and restarted from foundations.
        Steel framework work from foundations to about sixth level lying exposed and idle as nobody knows what to do.

  All 50,000 are going to take this up? Wot? I would be surprised if 5% of them do. Speaking as an e-bike owner myself. And it’s not a subsidy anyway – just passing on the benefit of large-scale purchasing.
  
  Personally I think it’s a bit of a fizzer and won’t amount to a hill of beans.
  
  Here in Palmy North we have a new IRD building on the edge of the CBD. Parking is getting to be a problem and parked cars are fanning out further and further into “adjacent” and “not so adjacent” residential streets. There is not much of a local bus service.
  
  There is talk – not sure how serious – of subsidising people into e-scooters to make the “last mile” a bit more tolerable. Go figure …..

    @iboag… I would assume the discount deal was based on a 50,000 buy deal. No doubt they will be dumping ‘the old model’.
    If your prediction is correct, will that mean a flood of surplus E-bikes to hit the market?
    Will folk want to buy ‘the old model’ with less range etc?
    Sounds like another clusterfu*k deal to me. Another no accountability job on the tax-payer.

      FWIW the range of e-bikes has not changed much in the last few years. Typically 30-odd k’s give or take a bit. New models are not dramatically different to older ones.
      
      You are free to make whatever assumptions float your boat. Like I said – “I think it’s a bit of a fizzer and won’t amount to a hill of beans”.
      
      If it got to 50,000 (it won’t) and there was a “cost” of $35m that money could be used to build 1 km of expressway or fund almost a whole day of the pension …..

        Just looking on alibaba. Seems you can buy a basic e-bike quantity 100 for about $US600 = $NZ1k. 100 bikes in a 20-footer would cost about $50-60 each. GST another $150. Say $1200 all up …. Make what you will of the sums ….

  And there’s the additional fact that anything lightly won is always lightly valued – so small essentials like bike care and garaging, security and maintenance will be expectedly low on the “lucky” ones’ list of priorities. How long will most of the bikes last before they’re only suitable to be consigned to the bin? How long will it take for the taxpayers’ monies spent to be completely squandered?
  
  How much longer is it going to take for the realisation to dawn that MMP has been the most colossal con ever perpetrated on this country? FPP could never have set us up with hopelessly inadequate MPs like Genter – individuals who’d have failed disastrously, never gaining electorate seats.

  This is blatant discrimination but sets a useful precedent for use in future against those same Govt employees especially Labour/Green/ NZ 1st if they still exist . Lets say a $5000 exemption from Income Tax is introduced but excludes all those receiving the e bike subsidy.

Had two spam phone calls recently. One was from some Asian boiler room saying they were from some Chinese bank saying that someone had withdrawn $1200 from my NZ bank account. I asked why they had contacted my NZ bank and they muttered something about ANZ (which I do not use) then hung up.
Then one from some Kiwi boiler room on behalf of Mercury. She pointed out the call was being recorded and said power prices were increasing next year and offered an extra prompt payment discount if I would lock in for the next two years (that would be why the call was recorded – to provide evidence of the lock-in contract if I accepted).. I wonder what the pie eater would think of this. I refused to bite. Anyway with reducing network charges and with the possibility of Tiwai pulling the plug, power prices could well go down, not up!

  Even if Tiwai shuts down, the power from Manapouri can’t get to the general grid in any volume because the Manapouri to Benmore circuits are inadequate. There’s a several billion potential project to implement that, but until then, Manapouri is of very limited use outside the smelter supply.
  
  So if power prices are to drop next year, it isn’t for that reason.

Not one mention of the decimation of Labour in the UK election in the first 20 pages but many flattering references to SaintJacinda who as a former President of Socialist Youth International has the same leadership beliefs as Jeremy Corbyn.

The BBC have polled film critics and published a list of the 100 best films directed by women, with The Piano topping the poll, and other well known films like The Hurt Locker and Lost in Translation sprinkled in with a lot of arthouse movies. (No Wonder Woman, which is the highest grossing film directed by a women and no Captain Marvel, which is the highest grossing film with a woman co-director – but what would expect from snobby critics.)

Craig Murray: The disillusionment will be on the same scale as Johnson’s bombastic promises.

It is very difficult to collect my thoughts into something coherent after four hours sleep in the last 48 hours, but these are heads of key issues to be developed later.

I have no doubt that the Johnson government will very quickly become the most unpopular in UK political history. The ultra-hard Brexit he is pushing will not be the panacea which the deluded anticipate. It will have a negative economic impact felt most keenly in the remaining industry of the Midlands and North East of England. Deregulation will worsen conditions for those fortunate enough to have employment, as will further benefits squeezes. Immigration will not in practice reduce; what will reduce are the rights and conditions for the immigrants.

Decaying, left-behind towns will moulder further. The fishing industry will very quickly be sold down the river in trade negotiations with the EU – access to fishing (and most of the UK fishing grounds are Scottish) is one of the few decent offers Boris has to make to the EU in seeking market access. His Brexit deal will take years and be overwhelmingly fashioned to benefit the City of London.

There is zero chance the Conservatives will employ a sizeable number of extra nurses: they just will not be prepared to put in the money. They will employ more policemen. In a couple of years time they will need them for widespread riots. They will not build any significant portion of the hospitals or other infrastructure they promised. They most certainly will do nothing effective about climate change. These were simply dishonest promises. The NHS will continue to crumble with more and more of its service provision contracted out, and more and more of its money going into private shareholders’ pockets (including many Tory MPs).

The disillusionment will be on the same scale as Johnson’s bombastic promises. The Establishment are not stupid and realise there will be an anti-Tory reaction. Their major effort will therefore be to change Labour back into a party supporting neo-liberal economic policy and neo-conservative foreign (or rather war) policy. They will want to be quite certain that, having seen off the Labour Party’s popular European style social democratic programme with Brexit anti-immigrant fervour, the electorate have no effective non-right wing choice at the next election, just like in the Blair years.

To that end, every Blairite horror has been resurrected already by the BBC to tell us that the Labour Party must now move right – McNicol, McTernan, Campbell, Hazarayika and many more, not to mention the platforms given to Caroline Flint, Ruth Smeeth and John Mann. The most important immediate fight for radicals in England is to maintain Labour as a mainstream European social democratic party and resist its reversion to a Clinton style right wing ultra capitalist party. Whether that is possible depends how many of the Momentum generation lose heart and quit. ….

Billions to be spent and most of it on ~~pork barrel~~ roads –

The government seemed intent on living up to its new “we’re doing it” slogan this week when Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced a $12 billion infrastructure spend over the next four years. [1]

At what point does the Electoral Commission consider such announcements need to be differentiated – as announcing Coalition Government policy, or claiming Labour Party election policy – especially when the spending is intended to be three years beyond the next Election and therefore for the term of the next Government which may not be Labour?

And so in terns of the period covered, does Green Election policies agree with the amount funding to be spent on roading?

When will the proposal to move the Port of Auckland fall into the same question of Coalition Government consideration, or formulation of Election Policy? –

Another report released on Thursday recommended moving the port to Northland but Transport Minister Phil Twyford effectively put it on hold.

“We just believe that such a mammoth infrastructure decision, such a huge cost of investment … that requires really credible analysis and evidence,” he said. [1]

Pity he didn’t feel that way about gas and oil exploration, bloody aerosol.

Mr Peters wants the green light to be switched on now, and clearly thinks his cabinet colleagues are dragging the chain – on the ports question.

NZ First wants this done and dusted well before the election, for the very good reason that it wants to again hold the Northland seat in Parliament. Mr Peters won it in a by-election in 2015 but lost it to National in the 2017 general election. [1] – so that definitely is Election material.

With new infrastructure details – including roading – due to be revealed in February, that will give about 7 months, 25 days before a possible Election (February 1 to September 26, for example)

White Island recovery: from a Newshub “updates” yesterday –

2:24pm – GNS science says there is still a 50 to 60 percent chance of an eruption within the next 24 hours.

2:01pm – Defence Force senior officer colonel Rian McKinstry says an assessment on whether it was safe to go to the island on Friday morning was “that there was a six percent chance in any three-hour period that the volcano may erupt”.

Perhaps seemingly unimportant, but still essential to executing the recovery, or not –
it is just puzzling how a 1 in two chance (fifty – fifty, or a bit more) of an eruption, became a one in sixteen chance (1 : 16.6) on a three hourly basis, which one assumes would still be 1 – 16.6 for the next three hours after that, then after that?

Stuff is still pushing it this morning –
Inside the body recovery mission. They departed at a dawn, with a 6 per cent chance of being caught in another eruption.

  GNS has been saying there is a chance of an eruption for how many days now? Yes its an active volcano. It erupts ocasionally. However, if one looks at its previous eruption cycle, I’d say its done its dash for a while…

    Less than 1 person a year has died in NZ from volcanoes in the last 150 years.
    
    Every year about 100 people die of drowning. Yet where is the nanny state telling people they can’t swim if they don’t have an emergency plan?
    
    Every winter people die from black ice on roads, exposure on tramping tracks, etc etc. Where’s the nanny state for that?
    
    What is so special about volcanic deaths that everything should be regulated?

      I’m with you on resisting the rush to ban this sort of risk taking. On the other hand, quite a few of these poor victims are going to be spending weeks in intensive care getting surgery every other day, to deal with their horrific burns. There might be a fiscal argument for the state to at least limit the maximum number who might get caught up in one of these episodes of bad luck.

  Re Christchurch Town Hall restoration cost over-run of $40M. The best option at the time was to have bowled the earthquake damaged building and start again with a similar look building using the same architectural firm but with
  design improvements based on previous operating experience. But the old building had ‘architectural merit’ blah blah and had to be restored.
  As for electricity and cleaning costs had someone ran out of backs of old envelopes to do cost estimates on.
  Similar with the Cathedral – if people want it restored, they need to cough up the money and willpower. That is what happened 900 years ago when the Chartres Cathedral near Paris burned down. There was enormous goodwill from the locals and itinerant tradespeople to rebuild it.
  The Catholics have the right idea in Christchurch. They have now decided to abandon their old cathedral and start over on a new better located site.

    Someone asked how the addiction would be verified, so it didn’t become a get-out-of-jail free card for crims.
    He really had no answer. Mumbled something about a new panel then backtracked on that.
    
    They really are lazy. They think nothing through, have no real-life experience, and are totally impractical.
    But I’m sure this proposal will reduce the prison population so that’s OK, until the media fills with repeat offendors.

    Government is not solely about decision making,if it was politicians would have to post performance bonds. Ideas and instructions are easy dealing with the outcomes is the problem.

Changing the subject… I have been engaged in a mild battle with the local council about the pool regs.

Currently all pools are being inspected to ensure they comply with the “fencing regs” to keep people out.

However, new applications are being considered with fencing and “falling out” considerations being applied… in particular infinity type edges that are a meter or more above the ground in case someone sits on the edge and falls out. So….. you need a fence on the edge to stop said person falling out.

The world has gone absolutely nuts with personal responsibility no longer a consideration.

We allowed people to enter the throat of an active volcano but can’t let them sit on the edge of a meter high swimming pool FFS!

  A couple of years ago we pulled our fishpond out because the inspector checking our spa pool demanded a fence around the fishpond. Ah no children live here. But some kid apparently could climb the locked back gate and wonder into the fishpond and drown. He didn’t like me saying they shouldn’t be trespassing then.

    A pilot might have got into trouble and needed to jump out of his plane with a parachute. What if he had fallen in the fishpond and drowned? Ok, maybe it wasn’t deep enough for him to drown, but some of that fishpond water could have gone in his ear and he might have got an ear infection.
    
    Sounds to me like it was a disaster waiting to happen. Good thing it is filled.
    
    You really must think about the safety of others.

  Had a similar issue this year. We have a 2m high 200mm solid concrete block boundary wall on two sides of the pool enclosure.
  The letter box pokes through on the inside for 95mm and 400mm down on the drive wall and an outdoor power socket sticks out 95mm and 750mm down on the neighbouring wall.
  Compliance required a tapered board to the top of the wall in both cases to stop a child climbing over the 2m wall, standing on the two above risks, jumping down the rest of the way, walking over to the pool and falling in.

  Funniest thing was last February when we got a letter from the council advising us that our pool was due for yet another inspection, and gave us a time and date.
  [It’s been compliant since the day it was installed – just another way to rob the poor ratepayer]
  Anyway, just prior to the guy arriving, my partner spread a buket of car-wash liquid over the tiles. Talk about slippery 😀
  We both went upstairs to hide and watch out of our bedroom window, only to see him unlatch the gate, walk onto the tiles, slip over, and crack his head a beauty on the side of the spa. What a HOOT!

    Nothing on hotspot, nothing on snicko. Clear evidence of it hitting the helmet. Easy decision for anyone with a clue about what this technology can and can’t do. But unfortunately they 8nsist on using cricket umpires rather than people who understand this stuff. Usually ex-players who appear to have been hit in the head with a few too many bouncers for them to have much understanding of anything!

It is a tragedy that the ‘powers that be’, prevented the extrication of all of the victims of the White Island tragedy, on the day of the disaster. Now, NZ is spending huge resources in finding and bringing home, the two lost souls who sadly and ironically, are two NZ White Island tour guides.

  Yes how dare they not put more lives at risk to recover dead bodies and waiting until the right equipment had been brought into the country for the hours and hours that the rescuers needed to recover the bodies without damaging their own health.

      Ah yes the pilot who claimed to know where all the bodies were, obviously he didn’t because they are still looking for two. Couldn’t really give a toss what experience you claim you have is, you weren’t there and what you think you know means jack shit compared to those who were in charge and have carried out the recovery of the bodies.
      
      Fact westpac helicopter landed on the White Island and carried out a search on the day finding no one was still alive to be rescued.
      
      Fact the rescue crews carried out tests to see how what the air quality was like constantly to see if they could go on the island
      
      Fact the equipment they had failed tests and they had to get more equipment IN
      
      Fact, there is always some dick who isn’t there that thinks they could do better

      Paul. I don’t know what your experience is but I suggest the SAS aided by advice from numerous experts and the Local helicopter pilots may have surpassed yours?
      Also the story that only Australians were taken off the island was officially denied by Ardern yesterday. I might be wrong, but reading between the lines I thought both the guides were taken off.

  Yeah, there is at least one moderator here who needs to be sacked. This place is dying because of the moderation and because of the attitude of one moderator, but I don’t think David cares.
  
  A thought for you tall man. If a person is warned or banned for a post that a moderator has approved, should the moderator not also be banned and warned for approving it in the first place, lol

    There seem to be a few differences in the way my comments are moderated.
    
    When I noted a week ago that some of my comments were in moderation for over 4 hours yet others had been passed I was told by a mod that I was paranoid.
    
    I definitely think that there is one that takes the role a little seriously and I still struggle with the concept that ardern is deeply concerned when I call her a liar.
