I see the disinterment of the 29 Pike River miners has blown it’s budget and they are barely past the first seal. All to find out why the mine blew up. That’s easy, it was an unsafe mine.

Any underground mine where there is fire damp present is asking for trouble and has happened many times in the past.

    Not before Florence nightingale of NZ has a pre election photo op, even it is just inside the tomb, the opportunity will be to big to miss. No good throwing more money at it till the right moment. Election is still along way off and could be many more COL “what were we thinking” moments to come.
    2020 the year NZ finds out just how stupid or astute they are as a country, it will be the voters decision, even though less than half can decide, even 5 % can decide an election outcome. Great voting system, not.

  Even Andrew Little and Damien O’Connor knew that mining on the West Coast was not without danger:
  
  EPMU National secretary Andrew Little (now a Labour MP) told the New Zealand Herald on November 22 2010 that there was “nothing unusual about Pike River or this mine that we’ve been particularly concerned about”.
  
  He then appeared on TVNZ’s Close Up to again defend PRC management.
  
  He told Close Up that underground mining was inherently unsafe and the risk of gas explosions, particularly on the West Coast, was high.
  
  While the industry was aware of the risks and took the necessary precautions, unfortunately these kinds of incidents still happened, he argued.
  
  On November 26, 2010 the Dominion Post ran an article that denounced ‘wild’ rumours that the mine was not safe. It declared that “Any suggestion of obvious or known safety lapses does not find traction with unionised staff or union leader Andrew Little.”
  
  Andrew Little’s conciliatory views toward PRC management were echoed by Labour MP Damien O’Connor. He suggested that no one was responsible for the accident and that the disaster was “just one of these things that the West Coast unfortunately has had to get used to over the years”.

    The Little who recognises the physical fact that West Coast mines are potentially unsafe ( like most underground mines and why historically mine there in the first place? ) .

  Exactly; the ‘Coast coalfields are renowned for the phenomenon, but if its going to make political capital and help re-election, who cares? Photo-ops are FAR more important than mere human lives.

Kind of related to DPF’s post about the disapproval of sugar by people who know better than we do, has anybody else noticed how frequently Stuff inserts the word “booze” into articles related to alcohol? Because “booze” has the whiff of disapproval about it, a not too subtle jab from those who have decided we need to be re-educated. Yesterday it was in the headline to an article lifted straight from the Washington Post, with no attempt at all to relate it to a New Zealand audience. In fact it was inserted into the headline: “How a decade of drinking changed the future of booze”, and in the article itself the word “booze” was not used – there was one reference to “a boozy cocktails culture”. Subliminal messaging from Stuff’s string pullers? Mend your ways, you great unwashed.
