Yesterday I had the misfortune to have RNZ on the radio as I drove a short distance. At about 17:45 there was a ‘story’ about a few chaps working out in an gym in office building someplace in the US, being approached by another person and challenged about their right to be working out there. They proved that they were tenants, and that should have been the end of it – right?

Well no, the chaps were black and the challenger was white so the assumption was that the challenge was racially motivated. From my listening there was nothing to suggest that, other than a prejudicial assumption that any concern or question asked by a white person is intrinsically motivated by racism. I believe the white chap had then his lease cancelled, presumably after a complaint.

The RNZ interviewer worked overtime to paint the situation as an example of continuing racism, and in doing so to perpetuates the disgraceful lie that all white people are racists while manufacturing victims to prove their point. It’s utterly shameful behaviour designed to stoke tensions and create division. I resent that even 1 cent of my tax paid goes to fund this operation.

  While on the subject of the media-
  The violent riots in America have shown once again that the mainstream media turns everything into an anti-Trump story. The president walked to the local church and held a Bible in a symbolic gesture that seemed to trigger many people.
  
  The mainstream media, after demanding an address from Trump,castigated his actions and claimed that the way was cleared for him by police using tear gas against peaceful protesters. However this account which was repeated by multiple outlets was false.
  
  My rule of thumb now is that every anti-Trump story needs to be fact checked multiple times before giving it any credence whatsoever. In fact the police did not use tear gas, they used smoke canisters which do not contain an irritant. The protesters were not peaceful and were calling for violence.

At approximately 6:33 pm, violent protestors on H Street NW began throwing projectiles including bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids.     Ironically I did dig deeper into the smoke vs tear gas issue and found evidence that OC gas was used by Park Police. It’s not CS or CN tear gas but is apparently still tear gas.

    Footage of 2 NYPD cars “ramming” rioters , no they were trying to get the hell out of a possibly fatal situation for themselves , and it would have been the same for the guy in the truck .
    
    And possibly the most disturbing thing ( RIP NZ) posted last night . The silence around the lonely and brutal death of 77 year old David Dorn. Silence of the Media and the so called anti racist “protesters”

        I saw the same scenes ,alas I do not have the skills to present the wretched viewing on Kiwiblog.I posted at the time ,it looked like a scene out of China.They were peaceful protesters that were gassed ,batonned shot at with rubber bullets ,and flash bang grenades all so President Chump could have a photo op.And there are contemptible cretins on this blog either denying it happenned,or approving of it.Pffft you are truly fucked up by your prejudices.

      What is the legal obligation of citizens in the US when a line of police advances and orders you to disperse?
      
      It may look bad on camera when a little old lady is cowering under a placard and a big policeman starts beating on her with a baton, but if the law clearly requires you to move on when the police order you to disperse, then surely the old lady is passive-aggressively confronting the police and breaking the law. (Video footage does provide wonderful brutal-police-narrative fodder, which is why it is done.)

      I agree a lot of the violence is actually the cops just reasonably dispersing people after curfew (probably a bit heavy handed, but it is the US after all). Also, there are definitely looters using the covers of the protests, and those have to be dealt with.
      
      But in the case of the Trump photo op, it was 20 minutes before curfew. hose people were just beaten for exercising their constitutional rights. Ironically, straight afterwards, Trump had the gall to claim that her was their ally! FFS.
      
      Overall I think there has been a lot of restraint by police and protestors alike, luckily. Of course there are exceptions – aggressive young men (mostly white in the case of the protestors, all colours in the case of the cops). What amazes me is to see Trump fanning the flames as hard as he can. He WANTS a fight against his own people. What a turd.

        The United States Park Police (USPP) is committed to the peaceful expression of First Amendment rights. However, this past weekend’s demonstrations at Lafayette Park and across the National Mall included activities that were not part of a peaceful protest, which resulted in injuries to USPP officers in the line of duty, the destruction of public property and the defacing of memorials and monuments. During four days of demonstrations, 51 members of the USPP were injured; of those, 11 were transported to the hospital and released and three were admitted.
        
        Multiple agencies assisted the USPP in responding to and quelling the acts of destruction and violence over the course of the weekend in order to protect citizens and property.

        Clergy members said they were not asked permission or told ahead of time that the president wanted to use the church, which is known as “the Church of the Presidents,” for the photo. Many said they are outraged over the use of the Bible as a “prop.”
        Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, who oversees the church and the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, D.C., told “CBS This Morning” on Tuesday that the decision was antithetical to everything the church stands for.
        “The President did not come to pray; he did not lament the death of George Floyd or acknowledge the collective agony of people of color in our nation. He did not attempt to heal or bring calm to our troubled land,” she tweeted.
        The Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry also criticized Trump’s visit.
        “He used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes,” Curry said in a statement Monday night. “This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or to heal us.”

    I am concerned that New Zealand citizens would so easily comply with the most obvious of lies.
    
    Whatever happened to common sense? At least in Japan the lock-downs and stay-at-homes were all voluntary. In that regard the Japanese authorities were more like those in some of the Nordic countries and the Netherlands.

      Japanese have been through much more than we have. Similarly with Koreans. Both were terribly battered in war, and fairly recently.
      
      Here, we could look back to the 1918 pandemic, but no-one seemed much interested in what happened in NZ during that. On a comparable population basis, now it would have killed more than 30,000 people.
      
      It would be smart now to thoroughly thresh out how we should react to pandemics, and to plan.
      
      It would be intelligent to adjust our health system and border procedures ready for next time, just as the Taiwanese used the SARS outbreak to ready themselves successfully for the next outbreak, which turned out to be Covid-19.

We are now no better off, with regards to natural immunity as we were in January. So the next time the CCP virus comes to NZ we are in the same boat.

Noticeable how Ardern/Little now control MSM. There has not been mention of preferential treatment for Maori/PI patients on hospital waiting lists since it was released last week.
This, along with Ardern’s support of rent-a-mouths and unemployable thugs protesting at the weekend, shows how dangerous this CoL led by a communist is becoming.

    Like it or lump it but the day of reasoned politics and policies has gone, unless you’re part of the “in” crowd in countries like Nth Korea or South Africa. The middle ground is the battleground and currently that middle ground thinks covid is a world killer, black lives matter more than white and rich bastards are just that, Bastards to have their assets stripped and given to the more deserving labour supporters.
    
    The best that we can hope for is a moderate approach to the future and I personally think National and Muller are more likely to provide that than ardern and labour.
    
    So, I either get in behind Muller and remove ardern or start aggressive accounting processes again or move to Australia for a few years for my good health.

      Why would your accounting processes ever be anything but “aggressive”? Usually comes under the heading of “tax avoidance” and is considered totally legit. Taking it too far gets called “abusive” and IRD take a dim view.
      
      At your age, moving to Oz might prejudice that Kiwi pension that you have (not) been paying into for all those years …..

      “Isn’t she lovely” a “breath of fresh air” “ she must be given a fair go to rebuild NZ after nine long years of neglect” and so on and on.
      We didn’t see any of that with the announcement of Mr Muller – it was just “ho hum just another middle aged guy in a grey suit”. Yawn.

I doubt there has ever been a communications degree graduate that has so literally applied what she has learned to her position. After Ardern became PM I recall reading a comment on a blog. The commenter said that he had seen her once in the Koru Lounge. He said she spent the entire waiting time studying a report that appeared to have been produced about her personal and pr image. That comment just sums up the way she undertakes every job. She determines the best decision to make that will boost her personal publicity. What is best for NZ comes second. If Biden becomes President I think Jacinda may well be secretly disappointed tha she can no longer be held up as a paragon of virtue against Donald.

I am getting very concerned about the negative comments about Todd Muller and all those claiming they won’t vote National because he is weak. Fair enough. My major concern is that apparently Matthew Hooten is his adviser. Boy, that should really ring alarm bells. I have never trusted Hooten, he runs with the hares and hunts with the hounds and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he is a Labour plant. I have heard him downing National too many times on Nat radio to ever believe he has Nats best interests at heart. He always got introduced as “from the right” but then spent the whole time agreeing with the left wing commentator. We are doomed, I tell you, doomed!

It would be a very brave or very foolish person who claimed they understood all the issues involved in race problems in the USA. Or here in NZ for that matter. The matter is hugely complex and fraught with misused stats, plainly biased analysis and political overlays.

One certain thing is that the media are making a difficult problem intolerable. Much of the media commentary is inflaming the situation, abusing their role as the fifth estate and is flat out lying.

A Herald item on the leaked Cabinet paper defining 28 days since last community case as a condition to move to Level 1, says –
The last community transmission case was reported on April 30, more than a month ago, but director general of health Ashley Bloomfield has said that the last such case of concern was in early April.
The latest date that can be “early April” would be April 15 – 50 days ago, I count.

But Hansard, yesterday Question Time –
Todd Muller: To the Prime Minister: how can you match that answer with the fact that on 20 May you said—and I quote—”the last case of community transmission where the source was unknown was early April.”? That means we’ve had now three full cycles of transmission with no community transmission cases in New Zealand—60 days since—

Against the 28 days in the leaked Cabinet paper.

And on the leak, the Herald item says –
If true, it would be an embarrassment to the Government and a reflection that its systems are not watertight. It is also a boost for Muller as the first leak since he took over the leadership.

But it fails to equally point out: such a leak would indicate somewhat a Labour lack of confidence in Ardern’s leadership.

  Sweden are now saying there approach was wrong and in hindsight if they could do it again they would have had restrictions. people forget that they do have restrictions including a limit of 5o in gatherings which we have already passed. Also many in Sweden have gone into voluntary lock down. This time next we will be more open than Sweden will be for a while. The important question is how their economy does compared to others. There is still an argument that it will be worth it in the long run. but we won’t know that for years.

Do you really want your kids and grandkids to be economic refugees seeking a better life in Australia because Labour has robbed them of wealth and opportunity here?

  To be fair, everyone agrees that Sweden failed its resthome occupants. They should have done more to ensure the workers were following the rules etc. You’re correct that what’s done is done and we need to focus on the economy now.
  
  It is still a very important discussion to have however as if this happens again, we do not want to go into a full lockdown again so need to have an adult discussion about these things.

    I agree. I didn’t downtick you by the way. A discussion to be useful and informative must, of course, be underpinned by an informed opinion from people on all sides who actually know what they are talking about.
    
    The problem with infectious biological agents is that a lot of people don’t know and are very ignorant on the matter and are relying on 5th form biology from 40 and 50 years ago at best, or weirdo whackoness at worst. e.g., 5G causes coronavirus.
    
    Any new infectious biological agent is a fast-moving dynamic story with a lot of moving parts, much of which is simply not apparent, counter-intuitive, or clear to members of the public. Do X, and the consequences will be Y, but the public won’t be able to see or understand that. They think the consequences will be K. And the same can be said of health officials about the economic effects of their work. They don’t know what they don’t know either.
    
    That’s why we need a range of views from informed participants, and only the government can really bring all that together in one place. Civil defence is not an overly political thing, and neither should Pandemic defence be either.
    
    The rest is just noise. And in some cases panic and hysteria and conspiracy theories.

I consider myself a very sceptical person, but some of the footage I’ve seen of police actions dealing with protesters in the US have me shaking my head at what appears to be pure abuse. That’s not to discount other footage I’ve seen of police engaging positively, but really there still seems to be a lot of douchebags in the forces.

  I honestly believe that’s the real problem here.
  The US Police forces are (generally) overly aggressive and mainly white (because what Black person would want to be a cop when you get abused and treated like an Uncle Tom by your own people) and a massively disproportionate percentage of violent criminals are African Americans. That’s always going to lead to “White Cop Kills Black Man”.

  Some police (particularly of the USAian variety) are thugs. But what you are seeing are the most egregious few examples snipped from 10’s or even 100’s millions of videoed interactions over last few days, and all of the video snippets fail to show context – what has led up to that action in that area. In many cases it is likely the police have seen the people targeted indulging in violent or otherwise criminal behavior immediately beforehand. A swallow does not a summer make.

I remember when

American police forces killed 3 people per day in 2019, for a total of 1,100. Black people were disproportionately among those killed being 2.5X more likely than white. Black people accounted for 24% of those killed, despite being only 13% of the population.
Scientists have struggled to study whether racial bias is directly responsible for the disproportionate killing of black people, given limited data on the race of those with whom police regularly come into contact.
A breakdown, since 2015, of US police fatal shooting reveals 2416 white, 1265 black, 889 Hispanic and 217 other races.
There were only 27 days during 2019, in which no police killings were reported, according to data from Mapping Police Violence.
Mapping Police Violence says it is able to trace more than 90% of killings in the United States.

  You are using incorrect data. Percentage of population is irrelevant. You need to use percentage of violent offenders within that racial group, or even better, percentage of people that resist arrest within each racial group. That breakdown since 2015 does look pretty close to the breakdown per ethnicity of violent offenders by the way.

So we listen to 15 seconds of discussion on right to be in an office gym during a nine minute interview.
Part of the 15 seconds was taken up by one of those being questioned setting up the situation for future use.

I went looking for more on this story yesterday, but the BOP Times mothership (the Herald) didn’t have much information. This guy is a former NZer Of The Year, and tried out recently for leader of the revamped Maori Party, which failed when he wouldn’t accept sharing the job with a female co-leader.

  Here is a serious answer. In theory, at least, the governor-general has extensive reserve powers, including the right to dismiss a prime minister, appoint a new prime minister, or dissolve parliament for a new election.
  In practice, those powers are not used, and probably never will be. The governor-general must respect our democratic norms, which rest on the fundamental notion that the house of representatives, elected by the people, determines who is to govern. A governor-general would not, could not, dismiss a prime minister who could demonstrate the continuing confidence of the house of representatives in his or her government.

      My concern was that “what’s in it for wynston” campaigned on a couple of significant policies. The removal of the maori electoral seats and reducing immigration to 10,000.
      
      Now if National rejected those policies and labour agreed to run with them I could support his decision but, he dropped those policies and went on a bauble hunt for his own personal gain.
      
      Now we have a government formed on fraud in my opinion as an elected representative who lied from day 1 to his/her supporters does not have a valid “election” and this coalition certainly does not have a mandate for jack shitt.

    Remember the 1990–1993 parliament? All those useless National backbenchers who were little more than voting fodder?
    
    With STV, no government is a rogue government. Why? Because the voters (in large, multimember, electoral districts) can replace useless MPs, of any particular party, with candidates of the same party! That is a strong incentive for all MPs to listen to, and take heed of, their constituents. With STV, there are no safe seats for individual MPs, which is exactly how it should be.

      I’ve got an open mind on how Govts are put together. I expect honesty and competency in all candidates. They need to show they have actual executive ability if they hope to be in Cabinet.
      From experience putting candidates in front of potential electorate voters weeded out the non-starters.

        I won’t argue with that. What annoys me about your anti-MMP comments, is that you seem to completely ignore the fact that the overwhelming majority of List MPs actually do contest electorates.
        
        The fact that they lose their electorate contests does not mean that they are unworthy of being an MP. It just means, that in a single-winner contest, where a winner can win with as little as 30% of the vote, the make-up of the electorate determines that winner.
        
        As an example, Chris Finlayson (a “local hero”) contested the Rongotai electorate on several occasions, and was comfortably defeated each time. Does that mean he should never have been an MP; was unworthy of such? Of course not.
        
        Under STV, he would comfortably have been elected, directly, by the voters on each occasion, and would have been the better for it. As I said here recently, STV ensures the best candidates (of each party, and, occasionally, independents) are elected in each multimember electoral district.
        
        Under FPP, Finlayson would never have been an MP, unless he was parachuted into a National-friendly electorate elsewhere, thereby depriving a National “local hero” there, of the chance for a political career.
        
        Your stated reasons for opposing MMP are somewhat weak, but you are nevertheless entitled to your opinion. But, for goodness sake, accept the fact that FPP, a system that I concede was probably suitable prior to 1867, has gone forever.

I would guess that over 50% of his support came from those 2 policies so he has a mandate to push those to the fore. labour promised a reduction to 30,000 so a meeting in the middle would have been a fair result to their voters.
    
    In reality, neither had any intention of doing anything about immigration, they both lied to get into the bauble bag. I despise them both.

  They can but it would have to be a very extreme situation. Whitlam was removed in Aussie by the GG and caused outrage. I don’t think it would ever happen again. The government would have to have no majority and no support from the people.

  I win’t comment on the Whitlam dismissal in 1975, because it is well known.
  
  In 1932, the NSW Government was dismissed by the NSW Governor. (The “Governor” in each Australian State is the representative of the Queen and appoints State Ministers in exactly the same way that the GG appoints Commonwealth Ministers.)
  
  The NSW Premier decided to not pay UK bond holders during the Depression. The Governor decided that was illegal and dismissed the Premier.
  
  Back to NZ – I cannot imagine any situation where the GG would dismiss the Government. For example, if the Government defaulted Crown debt – that would have dire results, but if the Government retained confidence in the House there is nothing the GG could, or would do.

    Sorry to disappoint but all Government health agencies already measure the value of your good health in Quality-adjusted Life Years (QALYS). The value of your good health is about $28,000 per year. These calculations determine which elective surgeries you have access to and which medicines you get. And which cancers you get screened for. At which ages. The Government uses QALYS to condemn hundreds of people to an earlier death than would be possible, each year by denying them access to cancer drugs. Because of QALYS.
    
    Sadly the Government abandoned this approach with COVID 19, choosing to save a few hundred very elderly people at a cost that is totally unjustified using the QALYS framework. Of course you can’t wrap your head around that because of feels. You will need to wait for the next National Government to appoint a Royal Commission into this disaster.
    
    Oh and BTW if I was offered $1 million, I would be totally happy to be exposed to COVID 19. Not so much if I was 80. But at 41 I would jump at it.

  I have said it before, but the accumulative impact of decisions like this over the next decade will erode the patience of Australia and the trans tasman travel agreement. Free movement of people between New Zealand and Australia relies on the values in each country around citizenship being broadly the same. Not identical – but comparable. If over a very long period, New Zealand adopts lax standards to granting citizenship, eventually Australia will say enough is enough.

So some politicians think it would be a good idea to have flights between Wellington and Canberra because it feels nice. Doesn’t matter that such flights would be ridiculous because they are not economic – in fact they would be way less economic now than they would have been pre-pandemic.
