  I think Ardern has been dragging this out so she can go on the world stage and grandstand about being the first country to eliminate Covid 19.
  The downside for her will be the health issue is over and now she can’t dodge the economic questions that will come over the ‘trashing’ of the NZ economy. I think she got the timing wrong, as there is plenty of time up to the election for people to see the damage and impact her decisions have had.

Bats, pangolins and wet markets? Not so fast. There is evidence mounting that Covid-19 did originate from the Wuhan lab, and was accidentally released. Some extracts:

New research has deepened, rather than dispelled, the mystery surrounding the origin of the coronavirus responsible for Covid-19. Bats, wildlife markets, possibly pangolins and perhaps laboratories may all have played some role, but the simple story of an animal in a market infected by a bat that then infected several human beings no longer looks credible.

A study published in early May by scientists at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., and at the University of British Columbia has uncovered an unusual feature of the virus’s recent development: It has evolved too slowly. The genomes of viruses sampled from cases during the SARS epidemic of 2002-2003 showed rapid evolutionary change during the early months of the epidemic, as the virus adapted to its new host, followed by much slower change later. By contrast, samples taken from recent cases of the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, have comparatively few genetic substitutions
compared with an early case from December.

A former head of MI6 has said he believes the coronavirus pandemic “started as an accident” when the virus escaped from a laboratory in China. In an interview with The Telegraph, Sir Richard Dearlove said he had seen an “important” new scientific report suggesting the virus did not emerge naturally but was man-made by Chinese scientists.

Sir Richard, who was the head of MI6 between 1999 and 2004, cited startling new peer-reviewed research produced by Professor Angus Dalgleish, of St George’s Hospital at the University of London, and the Norwegian virologist Birger Sorensen. In their paper, the scientists claim to have identified “inserted sections placed on the SARS-CoV-2 Spike surface” that explain how the virus binds itself to human cells.

A further analysis produced by Prof Dalgleish and his colleagues, due for release in the coming days, claims the Covid-19 virus has “unique fingerprints” that cannot have evolved naturally and are instead “indicative of purposive manipulation”. Entitled “A Reconstructed Historical Aetiology of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike”, the new study, seen by The Telegraph, suggests the virus is “remarkably well-adapted virus for human co-existence” and is likely to be the result of a Wuhan lab experiment to produce “chimeric viruses of high potency”.

  An Aussie virologist noted the same thing a couple of weeks ago. The early samples of the virus were already well adapted to human infection. Not necessarily genetic engineering it could just happen from repeated selection of virus successful at invading human cells in culture followed by accidental release.

    There is a specific 12 base-pair insertion, a ‘furin cleavage site’ seemingly taken from SARS and inserted into the nearest relative wild BAT virus that is highly unlikely to have been a natural mutation.

    It also seems that China has been scrambling to muddy the waters by planting evidence after the fact – eg pretending they had a discovered a similar virus some years ago, even though they only published it (RaTG13) a couple of months back, and various markers shows strong evidence of it having been composed/invented by a virologist – a virtual virus for which they admitted they had no physical samples (they will be working to remedy that now and likely trying to plant it in bat population to cover their arses).

      The whole point of natural mutations is that they are random.
      
      The mutations in the spike protein are very strange, but again – this virus mutates fast (not as fast as HIV, but FAST) so any advantageous adaptive mutations will be rapidly selected for…

        I’m not an expert but sounds like this is an insertion (a much less likely occurrence), not just a sequence of 12 unlucky transcription errors to produce a specific sequence of 12 base pairs, in a location where it was known to have a specific effect (from study of SARS). While the rest of the genome displays little mutation. That just happened to pop up near a virus lab 1000’s of km from the animal source that was doing gain of function research on these specific viruses.

        in/del substitutions (a type of mutation) are about 75% less likely than the “mutations” that youre more familiar with, which we generally call SNPs. But they’re far from rare. I am an expert on pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics.

    I did Maggy having a few mates in the know.
    
    The change was actually minimal and merely “headlined” what was a common occurrence. When a “stop” is initiated, weapons are utilised immediately if there is any “concern”.
    
    Few officers are far from a weapon these days and most would probably refuse to serve if they were.
    
    The planned usage of these “flying squads” was all PR as we do not have sufficient incidents to warrant dedicated units throughout NZ which is why they ended up doing road patrol.

Bald men at higher risk of severe case of Covid-19, research finds

Bald men may be at higher risk of suffering from severe Covid-19 symptoms, emerging evidence suggests. The link is so strong that some researchers are suggesting baldness should be considered a risk factor called the “Gabrin sign”, after the first US physician to die of Covid-19 in the United States, Dr Frank Gabrin, who was bald.

In one study, 79 per cent of the men suffering with Covid-19 in three Madrid hospitals were bald. The study of 122 patients, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, followed an earlier piece of work among 41 patients in Spanish hospitals, which found 71 per cent were bald.

A study from Veneto, Italy, of 9,280 patients found that men with prostate cancer who were on androgen-deprivation therapy – drugs that cut testosterone levels – were only a quarter as likely to contract Covid-19 as men with the disease who were on other treatments.

    Yes, this is a serious inference based on the fact that blood type genes form a haplotype (i.e. a series of genes that are co-expressed and inter-related across the entire genome) with highly reactive immune system genes. Chromosome 3 is particularly interesting.

If only the NZ media and local activists were concerned about the appalling amount of family violence displayed within Maoridom, particularly the number of children killed and injured, rather than obsessing about the state of race relations overseas! RNZ leads their ‘news’ with a piece of moralizing by Al Sharpton, an arch purveyor of racial disquiet and hate. I guess it makes a change from fulminating about hats.

        Yes, it was an offensive and tasteless thing to do. A price we pay for living in a free society – if indeed we still do – is allowing people to say and do tasteless and offensive things. Naturally others have a right to respond, either with tasteless and offensive comments of their own or, hopefully, a more mature critique.
        
        Should a school punish a teenager with expulsion for doing tasteless and offensive things? A better response might be to withdraw some privilege and to try to have her come to appreciate what was wrong with what she did. Instead they seem to have gone for public virtue signalling. I think that’s unfortunate and quite counter-educational.
        
        Perhaps, MCos, you were perfect and never did or said anything stupid when you were a teenager. I couldn’t claim the same – I did and said dumb things, as teenagers are wont to do. I was fortunate to have authority figures in my life who set me straight without destroying my future opportunities just because I was being a dick.

        The restrictions that “level 1” impose are on the very thing that, pre-panic, provided NZ with 20% of it’s employment and was second in earning money for NZ behind agriculture.
        
        “Level 1” also leaves the country vulnerable to the whim of the dictatorship, who can set whatever boundaries they wish, over-riding Parliament if they wish.
        
        While NZ is in “level 1” the dictatorship can re-impose any restrictions they wish including, but not limited to, a return to another level that is more restrictive.

    The causation is arguably the increased militarisation (thanks to trickle down from the military and the war on terror mindset of the Bush era) and physical aggression built up over decades, combined with police unions that protect shit cops from consequences.
    
    The trigger for BLM was the internet and social media (not a thing during the Bush era of course) shining a spotlight on police misconduct. That came at a time of a black President and progress being made on other fronts but yet not this one. So there was frustration and a sense that now was the time to demand real action on it.
    
    As for “there wasn’t a whole lot of racial division”, that is utterly ludicrous. But it aligns perfectly with your stunted knowledge of race relations in America.

I suspect these studies may have failed to control for other collinear variables.

For example, in the Madrid study what was the age difference between the bald and non-bald men? And how different were the two groups in terms of their co-morbidities?

Apart from anything else, though, the sample size is tiny.

    The employment ‘specialist’ we have has a 1,000 redundancies per day for 3 days following the removal of the subsidy and for companies you would least expect it from. These will all be a surprise to those affected.
    
    We still have the fallout to come for the accountancy/legal practices; finance companies and big box retail to come. Those will come once the reality sinks in from the dead cat bounces every industry has had following restrictions easing.

    Brett – the criteria for the second round of wage subsidy are far tighter than the first one. Instead of estimating that you would lose 30% of revenue, you now have to show that you HAVE suffered a 50% drop in ACTUAL revenue. But yes; this one runs until just after advance voting opens.       Also it’s means tested – you have to provide balance sheets, SOPs etc. Quite rightly you would need to expend shareholder equity/risk before providing additional cash under this scheme.
      
      As such don’t expect corporate businesses or well heeled private enterprises to get this. Indeed they will protect their shareholder risk, reduce staff to a level where they make acceptable profits and then wait until the economy picks up before ramping back up.
      
      This is what nobody seems to get – why would private interests and corporate institutions keep jobs and lose money if they know business activity will only get back up to 65-70% of previous volumes.
      
      Even here there seems a real lack of understanding how business works and what the real effect of an economic depression will be.

        I have a reasonable understanding of how business works and am currently cooking the books in order to get the next subsidy. This won’t be too hard, this place has been dead as a dodo all week and most of our suppliers and customers I’ve spoken to are in the same boat. From my understanding you can apply for the second grant right up to September and you have to prove the 50% drop in the preceding 30 days. Both the professional body I belong to and my accountant say it’s just a matter of being careful when you apply and when you invoice. The big bang is coming and it will be much worse than our inept government realise, not that they will care about the likes of us – their pay won’t be affected. They need to be chucked out come September.

        Correct – again there seems a real lack of understanding around how business works in the media, the public and parliament. Before anyone pipes up this is on both sides of the house and National’s response is as tits as the government’s to date.
        
        The fundamental of shareholder’s risk seems to be ignored by employees, the media and our elected officials. Even strong businesses will be looking for ways to shed costs so as to get as close to profit parity from previous years.
        
        There remains a delusion that people are entitled to employment and that businesses exist for their benefit and not the shareholders.
        
        For the first time in 10 years it’s been great to challenge our employees (including senior management) to go out into market if they think they can get better – they all come scuttling back after a couple of days.

        As opposed to printing and spending money in a delusional quasi Keynesian approach on low value public initiatives such as working for families, student loans, Kiwirail and Kiwibank…..Yep that’s worked a treat for NZ in terms of GDP growth per capita and productivity.
        
        And before anyone mouths off about our economic growth over the past decade – take immigration out of the equation and we would be barely better than most of Southern Europe.
        
        Tax cuts won’t save the day however in an economic recession they will allow the retention of staff if, at a lower turnover the return to stakeholders is sufficient. They will also stimulate growth once demand improves off the back off tourism and immigration being turned on again.
        
        Its always amusing to hear posters going on about pumping up demand by government spending. This spending is performed almost without exception in a lazy, sloppy, haphazard way (irrespective of who is in government) that results in increased obligations on the public purse (refer examples above).
        
        But hey enjoy our Greece-like position in 2-3 years complete with 20% unemployment and the bevvy of social problems (costs) that come with this approach during a recession.

So much arrogance in one story. I’m talking of the arrogance where someone presumes to judge a person’s actions based on their own prejudices, rather than trying to see that person’s actions through that person’s eyes.

First up is AUT associate professor of social sciences Dr Camille Nakhid.

“Things are never just a thing. This is not just a hat,” said AUT associate professor of social sciences Dr Camille Nakhid.

Instead, MAGA hats are an emblem of an underlying belief system.

“People who wear it wear it because they know that it’s a sign of white supremacy. You’re trying to make a point,” Nakhid, who is originally from Trinidad and Tobago, told Stuff.

She was frank when voicing her opinion on why some New Zealanders liked MAGA hats: “This is a white supremacy nation”.

“This is stolen land. Unless we actually come out and say that nothing will change,” Nakhid said.

In her view, white people know racism is a problem in New Zealand, they just don’t want to do anything about it because they benefit from it.

The article goes on to quote Dr Rawiri Taonui, who was New Zealand’s first professor of indigenous studies, agrees that MAGA is “unfortunately reflecting a highly racist section of American society” and that “these things are never neutral.” And Thomas Beagle, spokesman for the New Zealand Council of Civil Liberties, said while people are entitled to freedom of expression, “you can say things and then people can actually draw their own conclusions about what you’re saying and how you’re saying it.” And he agreed MAGA hats were a symbol of white supremacy: “I would definitely look badly at anyone or showing one”

So, people wear the MAGA hat because they know it’s a sign of white supremacy. Wow.

Something that really rubs me up the wrong way, is being told why I’m doing something. Being told what my motivations are behind something, what my own thought processes are, my particular line of reasoning for any particular action I may take.

I have news for these people who presume to claim they know why I wear a MAGA cap:

You don’t.

How DARE you presume to be so arrogant as to “know” why I wear the MAGA cap. You have no idea what goes through my mind when I do something.

Ironically, you are the same people who will berate people for judging someone by their appearance. People who might look twice at a Maori person wearing ta moko are deemed to be “culturally unaware”, “ignorant”, or “racist” (always a favourite). Well here’s a thought – what if I decide, to slightly alter Thomas Beagle’s words, to “actually draw (my) own conclusions about what you’re (wearing) and how you’re (wearing) it.”?

An article in Stuff from 2011 about ta moko explains one reason why people might have a negative reaction to someone wearing ta moko:

These reactions perhaps have long echoes from history. Applying paint before going into battle has been a tradition of people from Native American and Pictish tribes in early Britain to fans of “warring” teams at the Rugby World Cup. Permanently inking the face can be seen as a further extension. Here lies the association of the moko with warriors from our early history. In Mau Moko, Te Awekotuku writes: “Moko was a mark of mana in New Zealand… their strength as fighters, their virility, their reputation as men of mana, would precede them; to be fine-looking enhanced their public image considerably.”

So what if I look at someone wearing ta moko, and I decide to associate that with battling warriors, and hence draw the conclusion that someone wearing ta moko is doing so in order to proclaim that essentially they’re a warrior looking for a fight? Is that valid? Is that appropriate? I suspect you will immediately shout me down for being so stupid, and berate me for not understanding the culture behind ta moko.

But why does YOUR culture take precedence over MY culture? Just to divert slightly, remember the furore over the Crusaders following the mosque attacks? The demands to change the name? Well, hang on – the name “Crusaders” was chosen not only because of the English nature of the city of Christchurch, but also because it defined the crusading spirit of Canterbury rugby.       As always, it matters how the term is used and the underlying messages and themes that accompany it.
      
      In the case of the Trump campaign and the MAGA movement, it is one which seeks to rekindle the ‘glory’ days of somewhere like the 1950s. That’s fine if you’re a white working class couple in manufacturing, that seems great.
      
      However if you’re African American, any kind of minority, a woman, gay, or anything that isn’t straight and white, that’s a tremendously dark concept.
      
      Aside from anything else, the economy of the 1950s is completely unworkable in a modern world. Which kind of makes it a non-starter before you even get to the inevitable race relations issues.

The NZ media were up in arms about the appointment of Judge Kavanaugh in the US but have shown no interest in possible political interference in NZ’s own Supreme Court appointments. John Key believed in meritocratic decision making so would have gone for the most talented people. Jacinda on the other hand will want left leaning ideological sound appointments. Tucker Carlson (Fox News) has written an opinion piece analyzing the death-by-cop rate in the US. He notes the unending cries to ‘stop killing us’, and the claims by those in ‘power’ that ‘just the colour of your skin puts your life at risk’ (Biden and Booker). Cory Booker has said ‘African-American men mostly unarmed [are] being murdered by police officers and [there is] no way of holding them accountable.’ There are even claims from some of those on the left that what is happening is genocide.

Carlson does the numbers. In 2019 there were 1,004 fatal Police shootings. The race of the officer and the suspect was known in 802 instances. 371 deaths were white, 236 were black. The majority of the offenders were armed, with African-American suspects significantly more likely to have a deadly weapon than white suspects. Last year there were only 10 (yes, 10) instances in which unarmed African-Americans were killed by police. Of those 10 cases:
– in 5, the officer was attacked before the shooting
– 1 case was an accident
– in 2 cases the officer was charged
– in the remaining 2 cases no charges were brought but could have been.

(Carlson’s article provides a summary of the circumstances of each case.)

Against this, 48 police officers were murdered.

These numbers are tiny in a country with a population of 325 million. And compare with the deaths where police were not involved. In 2018, 7407 African-Americans were murdered – meaning that for every unarmed African-American killed by police, over 700 were murdered by someone else, usually by a person they knew.

I have to agree with Carlson’s conclusion, the present situation is ‘a total and complete lie, used by cynical media manipulators and unscrupulous politicians who understand that racial strife – race hatred – is their path to power, even if it destroys the country’.

The most frightening thing in our country is that our MSM, enthusiastically and unquestioningly, repeats the vitriol spouted by the likes of CNN, MSNBC, etc. Is it any wonder that Kiwis have such an unbalanced view of what is happening in the US? As we have seen with the recent ‘protests’ here, the unmoderated hysteria being pushed by those who would wish to aggravate the racial situation in New Zealand or advance their agenda without any information balance is increasingly worrying.

While that channel is regularly accused of being a ‘Trump mouthpiece’, it is only on Fox (as with Sky Australia) that a different – indeed, arguably more intelligent – perspective can be seen. For those without a Sky subscription, and those who don’t know how to access Fox on line, the likely source of American ‘news’ (other than our politically active MSM) is from CNN on Freeview. Maybe it is time Freeview either dropped CNN or added Fox?

Tauranga coucil , who wish to raise our rates by 12.9% pre-covid, now 7.5% post-covid, are showing their complete incompetence in a new council building that is not even finished but must be demolished because it is so dangerous. They’ve spent 19 million in construction costs so far… but, so much remediation work is required that it is uneconomic to complete the building .

My partner doesn’t have any problem whatsoever with seeing our Police fully armed.
His brother in-law is a cop in Queensland, and has never had to drawer his weapons in anger. Just havig them all visible on his hip has been the best deterrent.
So, other than when my partner has been routenily pulled over for the odd minor traffic infrigement (failing to stop at pedestrian crossings, running red lights, speeding etc), his interaction with the Thin Blue Line for anything ‘criminal’, has been zero.
As he sez, he’s never likely to have a gun drawn on him – I wonder why?
Just saying.

  As one who HAS had a gun drawn on him by a ‘mufti-cop’ who thought he was the boy wonder and was out to impress his mates (long story), l can only suggest that he was simply not ‘helpless’ enough (nor the cop attention-seeking enough) to warrant such attention…

  Been to Hawaii and Alaska twice. Open carry is everywhere for Police, and for public in Alaska.
  Hawaiian Cop told me New Zealanders might feel intimidated if NZ Police had open carry. I sad “why? unless you have done something wrong”

    Spent 10 days in Waikiki a couple of years back.
    It does provide a feeling of security to see those beach cops weaving their way thru the sunbathers. All riding 4WD Gators, full uniform in the blazing sun, and armed to the teeth.
    Funny, they had no problem with me wearing a Thong, but the moment i slipped my bikini-top off, three of them arrived out of nowhere, drew their guns, and told me to put my hands up.
    It can be a strange place sometimes.

        My partner did take me to see Pearl Harbour, but the queue was so long i couldn’t be bothered waiting.

Although this was written in 2015, it is still relevant today and perhaps the younger generation of social media justice warriors could use that thing they have between their ears to learn from others that did good, be more opened minded, and learn to engage and be respectful of others that they disagree with?

I don’t know if this adds up.
So Prosecutors removed language that said Floyd at one point resisted arrest, and included that he told officers attempting to put him in the squad car that he was not trying to resist arrest, but was claustrophobic.
Are they ignoring the fact he was in a car when they arrested him?
Don’t think this trial will be unbiased whichever way it goes.

I had to wonder in awe at the hypocrisy of having Al Sharpton make a speech during the George Floyd funeral where he takes potshots at Trump. Really?! Al Sharpton?

For those who don’t know, Sharpton has a long history of instigating race riots and antisemitism. –

Sharpton has a long history of controversial racial rhetoric. In the notorious Tawana Brawley case in 1987, Sharpton backed a teenager’s false accusations of rape, stirring racial divisions in New York and across the country. When he was successfully sued for defamation [by a prosecutor whom Brawley falsely accused of being among her attackers], he refused to pay the judgement, and supporters had to step in on his behalf. Sharpton still refuses to apologize for his role.

In 1991, Sharpton helped incite riots against religious Jews in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn after a black child was killed in a car accident. An enraged mob murdered a visiting Jewish religious student, Yankel Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum’s brother told Breitbart News in 2012: “I have never seen a person be able to avoid being held accountable in substantive terms for his various and significant serious otherwise well publicized misdeeds over such a prolonged period of time, as Sharpton. This is truly an indictment on all those who have done so in the past and continue to do so.” (Sharpton acknowledged some of his “mistakes” in Crown Heights, while protesting his innocence, in a 2011 op-ed in the New York Daily News.)

In another riot in 1995, Sharpton led protests against Freddy’s Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned store in Harlem, after it was forced to raise the rent on a sub-tenant, a black-owned record store. (Sharpton called the owner a “white interloper.”) One of the protesters later shot four employees and set the store on fire, bringing the death total to seven.

In 2012, Sharpton and NAN played a key role in inflaming national division and outrage over the death of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed during a scuffle with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Sharpton promoted false reports that Zimmerman used what Sharpton called “racial language” in speaking with police. He used his prime-time program on MSNBC to promote the story, including the claim that Zimmerman — whose mother is Peruvian — was “white,” implying racial bias in the killing.

Sharpton has also played a leading role in the Black Lives Matter movement, which has demonized police.

The left-leaning Daily Beast blamed Sharpton, in part, for inflaming the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 into local riots and a national conflagration:

The narrative thus set, Al Sharpton and the media descended upon Ferguson alongside outside agitators who marched with such slogans as “No Justice, No Peace” or “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.” More unrest would follow when the grand jury elected not to indict the officer for the tragic shooting. Riots and looting would ensue—with breathless coverage in the media and little from the President of the United States and the Attorney General to quell the violence.

In 2016, Sharpton was among the defendants sued by a black police officer from Dallas — Sergeant Demetrick Pennie, President of the Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation — for allegedly inciting hatred against police. (Five officers were previously killed in Dallas by a sniper during a Black Lives Matter protest.)

I see Robertson has decreased the downturn in sales eligibility for his latest round of wage subsidy from -50% to -40%. Clearly not enough uptake.

Not surprising with the stunt he pulled first time round encouraging businesses/self employed to apply for the subsidy then deciding later on that there would be a name and shame and register made public of anyone who applied for the subsidy. That along with the baying left wing media mean that you’d get a lot of aggro on a slow news day if you had got the sold as, no questions asked subsidy.

Even if you were business owner suffering a downturn you might pass on the subsidy, what with the aggro you’d get from his ‘revised rules’ after the fact. Also all the ifs and buts with what you could do with staff may not be worth the subsidy. Getting it would just hamstring your business rather than aid it.

I guess he sees it as more money in the bailout war chest for his free student allowances etc that will come in handy for him and Ardern nearer the election. Announcing those and having the university polling booths down at the uni are a sure fire winner for them encompassing all the new student voters. You can be sure the unis will be open by polling day and in the week leading up to it.
