This is a solid Quillette essay For Journalists, The New York Times’ Social-Justice Meltdown Is a Sign of Things to Come. The essay starts with some background on hyper-woke poets going after their own:

While the [US Poetry] foundation is well-known in poetry circles thanks to its magazine and blog, it’s difficult to imagine any subcultural silo more insulated from issues connected to street violence and police brutality. And yet, in an open letter signed by former awardees and contributors, the foundation stands accused of perpetuating “harm, exploitation [and] even trauma” against “people of color, disabled people, trans people, queer people and immigrants.” On June 3rd, the foundation had issued a solemn public statement announcing “solidarity with the Black community.” Ironically, it was the alleged inadequacy of this very statement that caused manifesto signatories to demand the resignation of both the foundation’s president and the chair of its board of trustees , as well as “a meaningful, well-researched acknowledgment of the debt that the Foundation owes to Black poets,[including] a specific acknowledgment of the harm done in recent years to Latinx poets, trans poets, disabled poets, and queer poets.”

I’m suddenly worried that I have seemingly missed our institutionalised mistreatment of disabled poets. The essay is a long but worthwhile read, with a few poignant gems such as this:

The real roots of black suffering in America don’t lie just with racism, but also with an unconscionably inadequate social-safety net, underfunded schools, self-interested police unions that protect bad officers, a disastrous war on drugs, and a prison-industrial complex whose profiteers feast on human misery. These are massively complicated problems that can’t be addressed with new-age religious ceremonies or self-lacerating Facebook posts from preening white suburbanites. Nor will a single black person be helped by privileged culture workers in Toronto, New York, London, Chicago, and Los Angeles leveraging George Floyd’s martyrdom to boost their social-justice bona fides or prosecute pre existing professional feuds.

Indeed. There’s none quite as pathetic as a liberal white guilt sufferer, permanently outraged and worshiping at the cancel culture altar.

    You’re welcome 🙂 I quite like Quillette essays. They tend be a little ‘urban liberial’ for me, but the authors write intelligently and they generally research well. Our MSM’s so-called journalists could learn a bit by reading.

  Police brutality against African Americans is unacceptable. But that is an American problem and an issue for them to address. It is not ours.

    ANTIFA is a world wide movement. It has been reported that they have been planning such a crisis for some time and the BLM movement became their catalyst.
    We are not removed from them here. We have had Maori separatism festering for some time and now, the BLM movement has given them more oxygen to peruse their aims. We currently have Maori calling for the re-writing of NZ’s history and the calls for removal of historic statues that ‘may’ have a link to slavery.
    It’s high time we called for a halt to all this stupidity and ridded ourselves of a government that serves as an enabler for these movements.

    Sadly, all people of whatever shade of skin they inhabit are capable of making comments that could be deemed ‘racist’, but when such things are done it is laughed-off as being ‘Just part of their culture’ and deemed inoffensive and of no consequence, while as for the concept that ‘people of colour’ can be racist’ against OTHER ‘people of colour’??
    
    Utterly IMPOSSIBLE; they would NEVER, EVER dream of such a thing…

    I think people will gradually get tired of the endless abuse being dished out to all and sundry. heck, I avoid a couple of people who go on and on about social injustice as they see it. I used to ask them what they were going to do about it – the short answer is Nothing, but hey, let’s talk!
    So we will turn off the radio and tv. We will not click on youtube links 0r subscribe to twitter or FaceBook.
    The activities of social warriors will be consigned to their own little corners of the world, as everyone else gets on with creating peaceful and cooperative lives.

  Ok,so Thomas is a product of its time – back in the dim dark ages when people in charge told you what to do and there was an expectation the job would be done. Is modernised now – but still verboten for many of the women of America who are anxious about sexism and “authority” figures ruining their children’s futures.
  Paw Patrol- sexist, racist, males always in charge etc etc – terrible.
  I’ve seen a fair bit of Paw Patrol while minding grandchildren. It is a happy, kind, animated programme about rescue dogs. – aimed at 2 to 5 year olds.
  And, as a preschool teacher once said to me: “Paw Patrol is often the only happy, safe thing many little kids experience during their day.”

    my kid does watch paw patrol, it isn’t great role model for girls – only 1 girl dog (out of 6), the mayor is a women but only there as a damsel in distress that needs saving and the only other main women character never goes on any missions or really do anything. Its an ok show thats popular, and there are worse things to watch, but there are much better shows for younger kids.

  Matt Lucas is hilarious and very talented. His character ‘Precious’ on Come Fly With Me was a fav. Precious is large West Indian Christian woman who runs a coffee cart at the airport.

      They want to remove it as an election issue. Simple as that. If they go into the election with this still over their heads they’ll lose political goodwill.
      Most people are happy for the Government to spend money when times are good but when people are losing their jobs etc they’re far less likely to accept a Government that is blowing money on a project with near zero chances of being successful.

      The downticks tell me that some must consider that Little was being brutally honest.
      Finding any politician not thinking about the election now would be rare. Which is actually what Little was doing when he resigned from the Leadership at the last election.
      Now, this morning the Nats have dropped the “raptor” strike force – certainly a read of public sentiment.
      Also on the table is a continuation of the wage subsidy. Did the original work? A survey of 90,000 SMEs reported it had.
      Other Influences at the election. Sport on-again, bubbles being expanded nearing reality. From disaster, we see a fine method with unprecedented support at least over the next little while. Did it all happen accidentally? No there were myriad of ways to drop the ball as we see by looking at places like Sweden, the States, and Britain. But has to be kept real tight, and I think that will reflect on sentiment going into the election.
      I know anecdotally that some of the changes in levels have been considered as too quick, that will take a while to shake off. Those folks, however great there number, are an apolitical force as they remain cautious.

        14.9% at the 2018 Census but have seen it reported as 20% recently. Deprived groups worldwide are highly represented in negative social figures as Peter Gluckman wrote 2 years ago. But throw the vote away Komata you don’t need it despite that the last 3 National Governments did. You should be a campaign manager but not for the Nats.

  80% of those in prison are people of penis, even though they are a minority in the population.
  The reason is obvious: male incarceration has increased with police numbers since colonization.

How heroic of you for using your public profile to unleash the righteous mob on to a guy in Akaroa who owns a small restaurant that virtually no one has ever heard of because the name of it did not pass the moral purity test.
No doubt the guy has had a terrible 3 months or so trying to keep his business afloat due to the lockdown so to zero in on him now and publicly shame him into submission or face total ruin is just distasteful.
So much for Jacinda’s kindness and compassion to others at this difficult time in NZ.

    Don’t start on the Celts as victims, G152. There were plenty of white English slaves in the Caribbean, too.
    
    Irish, Scots, and white English, for some reason most of them from England’s West Country (where Bristol is the big town), were shipped to Barbados as slaves. But the English must have predominated because the unique accent of the Red Legs, as the white Barbadians came to be called was distinctly West Country.
    
    A decade or two again I was a passenger in an Auckland taxi driven by a Red Leg (are there still any white taxi drivers in Auckland?). From his accent, we thought he was from Bristol.
    
    Perhaps long-time poster Scott Hamilton will be back on Kiwiblog soon to tell us more about Irish “slaves” he says were sent to to New Zealand. As slaves were tradeable property, it would be interesting if any of them were sold to Maori or swapped with them for some of their stock.
    
    Scott’s harkened back to days of anti-Irish prejudices before, mentioning Irish colonial soldiers were buried separately from the Anglican English. There are many old NZ cemeteries where you can see separate blocks for the Christian denominations – and for the Jewish. However, Scott seemed to think the cemetery segregation was on racial grounds. (Are Irish and British separate races? Not according to conclusions from DNA studies cited in the New York Times article linked to below).
    
    Scott’s even been highlighting white colonial street names in our towns (with the implication they should be replaced by Maori names). He’s mentioned “von Tempsky” streets, named for that colourful hero of colonial settlers.
    
    Here’s a snippet from Scott in the NZ Hooerald yesterday:
    
    “”Pakeha can try and fight this losing battle defending Cook or the legitimacy of the Waikato War, or they can look to other parts of their history, which might include the many Irish and Scottish migrants who sympathised with and even fought alongside Maori against the British, or supplied ammunition and weapons to Te Kooti, or those who themselves were brought to New Zealand as slaves or in forced labour.”
    
    By the way, has anyone noticed that in NZ Pidgin, the term “pakeha” has now been macronated? Not with one macron – but with two: Pākehā .
    
    To be consistent the Hooerald, the (New Zealand) Herald, should , to be consistent in NZ Pidgennow be the Niu Tīrene Herāld. (“Aotearoa” is for the Maori language).

      There is no such thing as NZ Pidgin. That concept is your invention. You lost this argument, to me, here, a year or two ago.
      
      The macron above the vowels in Māori words simply indicates how they are to be (correctly) pronounced. Why do you have such a problem with that? If I say, “The so-called élites of NZ society were driving this country to ruin, until Jacinda came along”, would you say the word ‘élites’ should be ‘elites’?

        In written English, ‘elite’ without an accent is probably more standard than the original French. My Oxford Advanced Learners gives both forms (accented first) but my Collins Paperback and Roget’s 21st Century Thesaurus both give the unaccented form only. Though I learnt French decades ago I would never write it in English with an accent.
        
        My wife and most of my friends and acquaintances speak Cantonese as a mother tongue, Chinese and English as second or third languages. Depending on which language they are speaking, ‘Hong Kong’, ‘English’ (language), and ‘New Zealand’ have three different, correct pronunciations.

        Times have changed, Jack. The use of macrons in English is simply respecting the Māori language. There’s nothing Woke about it.
        
        Of course we don’t use the Russian word for Moscow in English. The difference is, the Russian language is written down using the Russian alphabet, but the Māori language is written down using the English alphabet. As I say, macrons indicate how the words are to be pronounced, nothing more. Their use certainly does not adulterate English.
        
        This line you take bemuses me, because you are the only person I’m aware of who maintains your position. I’ve never seen it anywhere else, than here, by you. You have no support for your position, yet you continue to batter your head against a brick wall. Ah, well. It’s your head.

        The Concise Oxford English Dictionary (2011) gives ‘elite’ first, followed by ‘(also élite)’. Both forms of the word are used interchangeably in English, but I agree, ‘elite’ is more common, possibly because typewriters in English-speaking countries did not have keys for é, etc.

        Steve Todd: Fair enough about “Moscow” in English. That’s the point. In English, we don’t use the Cyrillic language that Russian does. Similarly, in English we don’t need the macrons that are on a word when it is in Maori.
        
        Beyond that, Polish and Italian use the same Roman alphabet as English, yet we don’t describe their capitals as “Warszawa” and “Roma”.
        
        In Maori, when the intention is to write “New Zealand,” differentiating it from “Aotearoa”, the person will write “Niu Tīrani” or “Niu Tīrene” (as distinct from “Aotearoa”), macrons and all. No problem with that. We are in Maori, and it uses macrons.
        
        Maori and English are separate languages. There is no need to Maorify English, especially for Woke purposes that want to establish usage rather than follow it.
        
        Have you never thought that pushing increasing amounts of Maori vocabulary and “grammar” into an NZ version of English could weaken benefits of learning Maori?

    The restaurant was already named after Hayes when it was bought, the owner says he may change it. Probably like most of us he didn’t know it was controversial. When I was an apprentice we had a foreman named Hayes who had the nickname “Bully.” It went about as far as thinking he might have had a relation who’d been a pirate but I guess the older folks around that time would have known little more.   Ross Campbell – totally agree. The good people of Akaroa have had good race relations over the years. The naming of a restaurant after a colourful character of the time was something that contributed to the vibrancy of the community and was interesting for the many tourists to the area.
  
  Now it has fallen victim to the social justice warriors. How many more aspects of our history are going to have to be rewritten? All because of a video of a policeman and a black man, which we all agree was horrendous, but has nothing to do with our local situation. But sadly social justice warriors are determined to apply that video to our New Zealand situation so we can all suffer.

      If Scott Hamilton was so concerned about the restaurants name he could have chosen to privately contact the owner and discuss the issue with him but obviously he wants to try and be relevant to the current BLM situation so instead megaphones his concerns all round the media knowing full well it will bring intense pressure on the owner at a time when the guy will be really struggling anyway due to C19.

I remember when

It is hard to assess whether, or how hard, Martin Gugino hit his head as it was not recorded.
There was certainly a lot of blood and the police seemed to assess it for a while.
What I did notice was that his hand was still holding his I-phone and it was hand off the ground.

You can also see very clearly, Gugino walking slowly towards the police line, and you could see the significant push from the police officer before Gugino went backwards at speed, hitting his head with a loud crack on the road! FFS why are people trying to make it Gugino’s fault, when, clearly, it was not! WTF – holding on to his iPhone minimised the totally criminal activity of the Police Officer involved?     The only proviso I would attach though is because the location this occurred at is currently subject to a dispute and emotions are high on both sides the truth of what really happened in this altercation might end up not being some what different from what has been reported.

      It’s all supposedly news these days because the public just phone in their news stories these days.

Yesterday we went on a road trip down the east coast of the upper South Island.
Sunny day, great scenery.
Never seen that coastal road so busy. Huge roadworks reminiscent of, but more extensive than, the rebuild after the Kaikoura earthquakes.
Drive took way longer than usual due to the 16 plus stop/goes.
50 or more very large trucks and heaps of other traffic seen over a two hour period.
Hundreds of workers at various levels and more shiny earth moving equipment than you would need to build a small town.
Got to Kaikoura and seemed all good, plenty of people and shops open. Even the Prime Minister was there dolling out money apparently, but didn’t see her – thankfully.
There is plenty of money out there folks – plenty of money.
People saying where was all this when National was in power?
They are not caring about where it is coming from – only that is there to spend. Happy daze.

I actually have a suspicion that he is doing his level best to destroy the Transmission Gully project, which he has never visited in 3 years even though it starts only 10km from his office. Someone is agitating for the removal of a statue of Captain Cook in Gisborne, an attempt to ride on the coattails of those toppling the statues of slave shippers and owners in the US and UK. The equivalent groups in NZ will have to face the reality that many (most?, all?) of the prominent historical Maori leaders were enthusiastic slave owners. Will we see similar protests here? Actually I hope not – judging the past by today’s standards is fraught. Leave the sleeping dogs lie.

A remarkable piece in the Herald this morning. It’s remarkable, because Josie Pagani has a long association with the Labour Party, but seems to have noticed that the Empress has no clothes:

I was surprised at how easily we agreed to stay home, be arrested if we didn’t, and trust the experts.

We went into eight weeks of lockdown with the willingness of the terrified, believing if we inadvertently walked into a butchers instead of a supermarket we could die.

Daily speeches on kindness, rules and the Easter Bunny were celebrated across the world. We were so freaked out by that black line on the graph inching upwards towards Italy’s infection rate we would have self-isolated in our toilets for a year until the Easter Bunny told us to come out.

Strict lockdown may have been the right thing to do. I don’t know. Because, turns out, neither do the scientists. They don’t really know if masks are safe; if lockdowns work; if you can get infected twice; or even if washing hands stops the virus spreading (but wash your hands – it’s a good idea anyway).

We were sold a “Sophie’s choice”. It was either your health or the economy (health wins every time when you put it like that). Each day there was a new choice to be made as the risks went up and down. Why weren’t we invited to help make those calls?

Instead, we were asked to trust only the experts – not scientists, because they couldn’t agree – but public sector experts. They may have been right, but they were making decisions based on assumptions. And that’s something we’re all qualified to make.

I try to avoid using the words “assumption” or “assume”, because I was always told that to assume means risking making an ASS out of U and ME. But the Government’s whole COVID-19 response seems to have been built on assumptions, worst case scenarios, and modelling, which was hopelessly inaccurate.

I don’t know if Josie Pagani has a lot to do with Labour these days, after she was stabbed in the back by Phil Goff’s office when she was the local choice to contest the Mana by-election in 2010. The Leader’s Office however did the old bus-in-the-unionists-and-activists routine, and Kris Faafoi won the nomination. But her worldview, particularly on social issues, is still very much Labour’s. So it is noteworthy to read criticism of this nature.

But the Government, assisted by a compliant media, chose instead to co-opt our freewill by scare tactics which are now having the effect of ruining any real chances of recovery. It is no excuse that our response was the best, when the criteria by which that is judged are flawed. This will be seen by history as the biggest con-job of all time.       Yup, obesity is a “racial marker” like “no daddy home”, especially when you look at very large BMIs of 40+.
      
      No surprise that the Bronx is the most CV-19-active area of the whole of NYC, has the highest density of African Americans and a whole bunch of other low performance markers (eg. 50% of families are female householder, no father).
      
      While NYC is known for its relatively slim population, this is not the case for its black and hispanic residents. Average BMI for Bronx is around 34 which means there will be many with a BMI over 40.

May I remind our Polynesian co-citizens and SJW hangers on that “Might is Right” is embedded in Polynesian cultural values and history. Marae post carvings, other objects and places currently celebrate Chiefs who acquired their tribal lands by conquest. They also acquired the former peoples of those lands who became their slaves, wives etc. The surplus they stored up as living supplements to the larder. Some when they finished conquering one territory went on try and gain more.

The problem with that is the legacy of utu–harm had to be reciprocated, for generations if need be. That’s largely why the availability of muskets opened up massive lawful killing opportunities. They needed external peacemakers umbrella intervention or they almost all would have gone.

Those values embracing force as right have long gone for the Brits with Magna Carta. There is a however a remnant bully personality class such as found in unionists etc. which needs constraint for the common peace. The worst of them parade in the name of peace and will accept no other rights than their own.

  I highly recommend reading F.E. Manning’s “Old New Zealand”, (Free, online in link below) his account of living in NZ as a trader from 1820’s on. Only takes an hour or two, and he was a champion of the Maori with a lot of love for them. Shows just how brutal and shit Maori culture was. Cook was a saint by comparison.

  Yes the misunderstanding was understandable. Violent challenges to everyone approaching is they way Maori roll. I have been to a few marae, but I got sick of the whole drama. The challenge, the koha, the time taken…so you go there to do some negotiations, take 4 hours to have one hour of face to face time. And then get told to come back another day. And another day. For months.
  
  There is a reason that civilised societies evolved to rocking up, saying ‘hi’, shaking hands, and getting down to business. It gets things done.

Heard yesterday from a friend, a sole trader, who had claimed the wage subsidy first time round – you know when Robertson went out there and said anyone should apply, no questions asked, except that you anticipate a 30% drop in revenue. Then Robertson, and Ardern, turned around a week later to say to the media that the whole list is available to use on slow news days. Remember that?

Now that friend has got a SECOND reminder from MSD, basically begging him to please consider taking up another round of the subsidy. Not bloody likely with what happened last time, even though my friend has had a significant downturn in revenue.

Then, in today’s Stuff, I read they’ve changed the MSD search engine criteria to search for wage subsidy recipients. Effectively making it harder to search the list and so only large businesses can get named and shamed. They’ve done this by limiting the searches.

What a clusterf@#*. Clearly jobs are being lost and Robertson’s struggling to give away his bribe kitty, and also, might I add, save jobs. This week’s redundancies are just the start. Just shows he has no business experience if he can’t understand why business people, big and small, don’t want to be publically named and shamed for claiming a subsidy they were rightly entitled to.

Anyway, need to keep in mind that although that wage subsidy list search engine has a few ifs and buts to it and is harder to search, the MSD, and Robertson, could at any time change it back to make it more searchable – wolf in sheep’s clothing- springs to mind.

  AFAIK it has always been the case that the search would only return maximum of 5 results. That is sound IT practise, a Google search for example returns 10 results per page. If you didn’t, servers would get overwhelmed returning hundreds, thousands of rows that you never looked at. The gist of the article was that Stuff were complaining that they could not access the complete list.
  
  The sole trader angle I was not aware of, but it makes sense. If the purpose is for employees to look up their employer, then why would a one person company need to be searched on.

    Business for many will be very spotty going ahead. Construction, maintenance and sub trades can be very variable in year to year profitability.
    Decisions are made by bigger player like Councils and developers sometimes several years away. Other companies can be very reluctant to commission a project without a view of good times ahead. These need to be actual not hope because funding is needed and prudent Directors, as they are legally required to be, won’t attempt to borrow without being certain of adequate revenue.
    
    The subbies like electrical contractors and others experience big swings in these time of uncertainty. They need to keep their skilled staff–replacement with beginners is not an option. The wage subsidy is useful to help with the present disturbance.

Currently Phil Twyford decides on a case by case basis whether a non-New Zealand citizen can enter the country. Yeah that will end well. A much better system would be to specify what you need to do to enter the country. In summary that would mean being met by quarantine officials, being tested for COVID and being escorted to an approved quarantine facility for 14 days. And critically, that you meet all of those costs, payable before you depart for New Zealand. In the case of critical engineers for big projects, the employer would most likely be happy to pay all these costs. (And if they are not willing that tells you they don’t need the person.)

Much better having price-based systems, with clear regulated standards than Phil Twyford deciding that film crews can enter but engineers cannot.

‘Our businesses’? The Equal Opportunities Commissioner is disheartened that businesses, particularly those that have received the wage subsidy, are laying off staff.

“The Government, the taxpayer, have invested in our businesses with the wage subsidy with the hope that will be the saviour …”. No, it was never going to be the saviour; only something to tide a business over while it assessed how its market had changed temporarily and, for many, permanently. The wage subsidy can’t keep zombie jobs or zombie businesses alive for ever.

And they’re not “our businesses”. They belong to the business owners, who have taken the risks and put in the effort to build the businesses up. They’re also the ones who bear the risks into the future.

  No govt has invested in any business with the wage subsidy. That only provided for the sudden ordered catastrophic closure. Employees otherwise would have been terminated forthwith and many businesses immediately permanently closed.
  
  The govt has a duty not to cause harm, that includes both business and employees. The subsidy bought time for further review. Without the very quick return of the tourists and students much more permanent damage must be done. The forced adaptation to working at home also appears to have removed many workers from the cities/towns so foot traffic business is being majorly affected too. That can only mean more closure of food outlets and retail shops reliant on office worker trade.
  NZ has only just got a glimpse of the woods again.
  Feelingz are not going to give us a clearer view.

  About 50% of trips into the CBD were by public transport. So if those 60% are now using their cars, then the raw number of people going into the CBD is down by about 45%, which correlates to the 40% reported drop in activity in the (Auckland) CBD.         The attitude to public transport is quite different with Wellington to Auckland. In Wellington it is reasonably efficient and due to ribbon style development it is more effective. Many Wellingtonians are public servants so are happy to catch public transport. Auckland in the other hand is not so efficient and cannot get commenters directly where they need to go. It also tends to be a bit feral. My son went to Kings College and had plenty of stories about abusive fellow passengers who were happy to taunt a group of school boys. When the senior boys head off to exams at the end of the year the school puts a security monitor on the back carriage to look after the younger boys.

Haven’t seen any comments on here this morning about the BLM posters at Marist College. I have no problems with students expressing their opinions. Free speech is the rock on which a free society stands.
I just hope that because it’s a mixed race school, posters that were inclusive of everyone, and proclaimed things like ‘All Lives Matter’ would also be welcomed.

I’m very, very angry… We destroyed our economy and half of our COVID deaths were because the Rosewood resthome owners were not following rules. Shut everyone down when all that was needed was intensive Resthome practices.

Rebuilding one seems pretty pointless now. Shopping , law, entertainment, public accommodation and leisure is the future in the city imho.

BEN FORDHAM: It’s ten minutes to eight. We’re speaking to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. PM, we’ve seen countless statues pulled down around the world because of links to slavery. This is off the back of Black Lives Matter. In London, the Mayor is saying that every monument is now up for review and one of the statues in the UK with a question mark now is of Captain James Cook. How do you feel about the removal of these statues?

PRIME MINISTER: Well, when you’re talking about Captain James Cook, in his time he was one of the most enlightened persons on these issues you could imagine. I mean, Australia when it was founded as a settlement, as New South Wales, was on the basis that there’d be no slavery. And while slave ships continued to travel around the world, when Australia was established yes, sure, it was a pretty brutal settlement. My forefathers and foremothers were on the First and Second Fleets. It was a pretty brutal place, but there was no slavery in Australia. And so I think what we’re seeing with some of these protests, they start on a fair point when they’re raising issues about, you know, people’s treatment in custody or things like that. Fair, fair issue. But now it’s being taken over by other much more politically driven left wing agendas, which are seeking to take advantage of these opportunities to push their political causes. And, you know, we’ve got to… I’ve always said we’ve got to be honest about our history. We’ve got to acknowledge the positive and the negative. But, you know, I think we’ve also got to respect our history as well. And this is not a licence for people to just go nuts on this stuff.

I can’t imagine Jacinda sounding as prime ministerial as this!
