The Politics of Fear
In his essay The Politics of Fear, John Tierney writes:

[Economist Robert] Higgs sees government, as usual, vastly expanding during the crisis, and he’s sure that it will not shrink back to its former scale once the crisis is over. It never does, as he famously documented in his 1987 book, Crisis and Leviathan: Critical Episodes in the Growth of American Government, and in later works exploring this “ratchet effect.”

By surveying the effect of wars, financial panics, and other crises over the course of a century, Higgs showed that most government growth occurs in sporadic bursts during emergencies, when politicians enact “temporary” programs and regulations that never get fully abolished. New Deal bureaucracies and subsidies persisted long after the Great Depression, for example, and the U.S. military didn’t revert to its pre-war size after either of the world wars.

I’d suggest ratchet effect has also been experienced in New Zealand. Government expenditure as a percentage of GDP jumped from 16% to 25% after World War II. Despite some pullbacks, our state has increased in size ever since. Following this government’s time at the Treasury benches, the broader figure of net debt is forecast to climb from $57.7 billion (19% of GDP) to $200.8 billion (53.6% of GDP) by 2024. That level of debt is asphyxiating for any modern economy, much less one still dependent on mining the udder of a cow.

“To tell people not to be afraid is to give them advice that they cannot take,” Higgs wrote. “Our evolved physiological makeup disposes us to fear all sorts of actual and potential threats, even those that exist only in our imagination. The people who have the effrontery to rule us, who call themselves our government, understand this basic fact of human nature. They exploit it, and they cultivate it.” Rulers instinctively heed Machiavelli’s advice: “It is much safer to be feared than loved”—a sixteenth-century formulation of the negativity effect.

“A crisis,” Higgs observed, “alters the fundamental conditions of political life. Like a river suddenly swollen by the collapse of an upstream dam, the ideological current becomes bloated by the public’s fear and apprehension of impending dangers and its heightened uncertainty about future developments. Bewildered people turn to the government to resolve the situation, demanding that government officials ‘do something’ to repair the damage already done and prevent further harm.”

The fawning, and largely unthinking adoration on display around our country attests to this. I suspect many New Zealanders have yet to experience the real harm of a deep recession as a result of the ‘Do Something!!’ licence given so unquestioningly to the Labour government.

Further harm is metastasising, and it’s not a virus.

      I received in my facebook page a sponsored Unite Against Recovery Ad. I went to the page and looked under page transparency to see what ads were being run. And under organisations that manage this page it says “No Confirmed Page Owner
      A Page Owner hasn’t yet completed business verification process.” So there is no transparency about who is running or funding the ads.

  I don’t care now if Maori had a non PC lifestyle in the past. That is another slate. We can only be responsible for our own actions. Every region and era is different: why should others be the same? Isn’t pride at the heart of many SJW’s?

  So I finally bothered to find out who Richie Hardocre is. Another one of these “straight Edge” prats who have become holier than thou and part of the woke brigade. I went to high school with a bunch of this lot in the late 90’s. At that time they were all pretty much actual Nazis (skinheads at least) walking around scribbling KAG on everything they could touch, and beating the crap put of any kids who they though held their wrist a little limp. They were horrid people then. Now they are supposedly reformed, but I wonder if they have just changed uniforms – a few seem to be in the Antifa camp now.
  
  Now that the woke brigade are persecuting crimes past and future, I wonder if this sort of historical misbehavior will be tolerated from within the ranks?

    Alleged violent bullying at school? People doing that are simply f0llowing the power and authority. All alleged I might add. For some reason ‘beating the crap’ out of people at school doesn’t seem to get perps charged with assault.
    
    Being a skinhead bully at school gets you well prepared for being an authoritarian bully ‘woke activist’ now: you love power and control over other people. Being the President of International Socialist Youth would also give you fondness of power and control over other people.
    
    This is why you’ll find a lot of youtube announcements of people leaving the left. They don’t want to live under authoritarians of any ilk.
    
    The dispute is hardly between ‘left’ and ‘right’ any more. It’s between people who want to maximise individual liberty and wealth for everyone vs. people who want to limit democratic rights, civil rights, freedom of speech and to limit wealth for the sake of ‘the environment’.

      @Classic Liberal, let me be specific with “alleged bullying”. This KAG subculture was pretty big at my highschool (In gisborne< late 90's). KAG, or "Kill all Gays", was some sort of subculutre associated with the punk/metal scene. The whole premise was to go around "outing" young teenagers as gay (they usually weren't, they were prepubescent teenagers), then persecute the shit out of them. Beat them up, burn their stuff, graffiti their books, their cars. Borderline sexual assaults in some cases. Nasty stuff. The girls tended to love these guys because they were "edgy". Typically this subculture were also into satanism.
      
      Fast forward about 5-10 years. Most of them became serious drug addicts and general wastes of space. Along comes straight edge, which appears to be almost a fundamentalist christian anti-substance movement. So all these prats apparently find god, and now are absolved living this life of subculture righteousness.
      
      Fastforward another 5 years or so, and much of this mob are now foundational members of antifa, standing up for all that is right and woke.
      
      Not all, but certainly a trend. Have to wonder if these individuals are just seriously messed up and looking for the next way to impose their will on others.

Thousands of people protested black lives matter in America, standing shoulder to shoulder. Shouting, fighting, looting. Suddenly the virus was not an issue to the press. All that mattered was the protests.
Now Pres Trump is going to have some huge rallies. Suddenly the virus is big news again. The Trump rallies pose a threat to public health!
So let me get this right? Black lives matter protesting and rioting, thousands of people, no danger to public health.
Trump holds rallies, terrible danger to public health.

He is the true Leader of the Opposition, trying to hold this wretched government to account. While I have disagreed with his stance on euthanasia and other issues like immigration, I can’t fault him as an effective MP. So at this stage I will be voting Act in the hope that he will have the support of more Act MPs for his efforts in the next Parliament.

National appear dead in the water while we are facing the most hostile government in our history which is on the cusp of an election victory that would give them unbridled power. If that doesn’t send a chill down your spine what will? Their next term will see the abolition of free speech, the institution of an internet firewall around New Zealand which they have already prepared for with legislation, sweeping taxes on the middle class and homeowners and the cementing of racial privilege in our health and other social services which is now occurring in areas like elective surgery. And God knows what else? There is a radical Marxist agenda coming down the pike and National have blinked.

  Getting rid of Bridges was bit of an own goal but it wont matter. The only thing that Labour have got going for them is timing, the election is in September. They might just hold on. Everything Labour have done since home detention economy wise is for the election in September. Then its game over.
  
  If Labour win in September then Ardern will not last 6 months. There will be another election next year. Its that bad.
  
  At the moment there is massive censorship by media on economy & crime to assist Labour. But its a weak facade much like Labout itself. It wont hold.

  I agree, it is concerning. I was supportive of replacing Bridges but I now admit I may have been wrong on this front. I think Muller has been very underwhelming, he seems like a nice guy but I don’t think he has what it takes to lead them to anything close to a win in the election. I hope I’m proven wrong. We should all be very worried

        The National Party, being true conservatives, have not previously revisited their electoral thinking since the advent of MMP.
        
        National has been held to ransom by a “Centrist” party (NZF) for 27 years. Meantime, Labour has always tried to hog the centre line while relying on its captive leftist allies (Alliance, Greens) to haul it sideways once in power.
        
        As in Germany, MMP requires that the two major parties always scrap over the centre line. They have to win a majority of the Great Unwashed who wouldn’t recognise a political philosophy if it bit them in the ass.
        
        Policy wonks and news junkies shouldn’t generally give their party votes to the major parties. Their positions are (or should be) accommodated by either ACT on the right or the Greens on the left.
        
        Muller/Kaye (and their caucus) understand this unpalatable fact of life. They are targetting the rose-pink segment of the political spectrum, knowing that their political futures now depend crucially upon a 2020 revival of the near-moribund ACT Party.

    Not withstanding Nationals leadership, their primary problem is policy. They have failed to appeal to the core support base of Small Business owners, Landlords, Farmers and ex Gun owners. Policies must include repeal or drastic revision of the legislation aimed to disadvantage these groups, if National keep not doing this they will lose, only hope is 20 ACT MPs . A strategic party vote for ACT is required.

I remember when

Not sure what I think of the armed police trial and not being a policeman have a limited idea of whether there is a need.
Willie Jackson on Q & A stated they didn’t want guns in predominately Maori areas. No mention, of course, of whether they were alright in predominately white areas.
Naturally, there were no stats as to whether these areas were more likely to have firearm incidents. No mention of whether the areas had a gang presence or high violence cases.
Obviously, the Maori caucus are going to remove any illegal (all) firearms from these areas.

  As a regular club user he said he had never noticed.

      T/R flag was designed in 1990 to represent “all Maori”. The 1835 flag was the United Tribes flag, part of the Declaration of Independence. At the time shipping was required to display a flag denoting place of origin in order to continue international trade (or have your goods seized).

  Wasn’t Paula Bennett, top ranking Māori in the caucus, there to put him straight. She probably doesn’t recognize the flag.

He needs to start on insisting that we all be treated the same – as New Zealanders and get rid of everything to do with race.     It would be the pits, I’d even go as far as saying it would be 10x worse than the current arrangement.

    To be honest, Maori shouldn’t have a flag. It’s indicative of their aspirations. ‘Tino rangatiratanga’ means “absolute sovereignty”, so you know what those are. It’s divisive actually and if we are comparing to the US (which we always seem to be doing) it should go the way of the Confederate flag.

My partner doesn’t beleve for one moment that Todd Mullers so called ‘gaffes’, in his speech to the Te Puna rugby club, (where the Maori flag was flying upside down and Toddy saying “….he was excited to be the new Labor leader”), but rather, these were just part of a well planned election strategy to ensure wide media coverage.
And boy, let me just say, twitter was running hot!!
Apparently, we should now watch out for Toddy to reveal his long held ‘secret crush’ on Jacinda, and his feeling of deep brotherly love for Camati Toffee.

  Then each MP, could transfer each month the 20% bit.
  At the end of each month. The IRD would publish a bank statement to show who had deposited what.

Looking at the shovel ready projects that the Government has said that will magically create jobs (I doubt we’ll see any real work outside of planning for the next year), I thought a lot of these had already been given the go ahead or had funding allocated previously? It sounds like they’re recycling projects over and over for the glory of the party.

very little support, zero acknowledgement of the situation, these people are suffering just as bad as many other businesses yet still have to fend for themselves.
Most likely because labour know it wont garner them 1 single vote.

farming will return to being our largest earner due to tourisms demise, this group will and their tax will be vital to the recovery of nz so youd think there would be more support then counciling and a few feed transport fees being paid.

  If turnover is down by 10% a lot of those businesses will fail to break even. Tax take won’t be down by 10%, it will be down by more like 80%.
  The main sources of tax revenue will be GST, and yes, PAYE (from those who still have jobs).

  If you need $100 turnover to break even and you do $120 you pay tax on $20. Drop your TO by 10% ($12) and you have just dropped your profit by 60%.

Now that New Zealand is likely covid-19 free the Government is in a bind. Any action now that results in a further, or more, cases will mean the loss of the accolades that have been showered upon them.
Downer for the Election.
Meanwhile UK citizens can travel to the continent without an isolation period. Italy is frantically trying to lure/entice tourists.
Bring on the Election, so that we can open the border immediately, if we win, and have three years to counter any problems that may arise.
In the meantime the Australians who make up about 40% of total tourists, and spend $2.7 billion here a year, sit out the next three and a half months.

Yes saw the Labour Party list yesterday. Yes still full of also rans and no hopers masquerading as Politicians . Interesting Labour Party List – Ms Szabo appears to have set things up well for the 2023 election when Labour will try and get back into power.
But FFS why has she left all the dead beats from the current Party – is that the best she and Cindy can do – I would have thought a clear out would have been necessary and – we’re expected to vote for that lot.
At least she has appointed a new Health Minister elect as Clarke will get greased out by a person with a medical degree.

    As physicians, the title “Dr.” is a courtesy title.

They keep spamming all businesses, seemingly begging to use this slush fund they have created. It is a possibly a great signal that business activity are back to normal, or more likely, a terrible thing because businesses would rather let staff go then risk another about-face from this government in releasing the names of small business owners applying for the subsidy and suffer the indignation of being unfairly exposed and branded as greedy business owners by nosy and jealous left wing media.

  When I travelled to the UK and studied a sociology paper I was astonished to discover that the indigenous culture there suffered the same disadvantages as Maori in NZ. These were the white working class who had the same patterns of low educational achievement, poor health outcomes and high levels of incarceration. I realised that the problem wasn’t racism. I can’t believe Muller and co are not jumping all over the fact that Dr Ayesha Verrall, an academic and sitting DHB member, and recently shoring up the government’s contact tracing system, is now a Labour MP list candidate and so high on the list she’s guaranteed of getting into parliament.
Didn’t she do a report into aspects of the government’s handing of the crisis? Did she know at the time about her placement on the Labour list? When did she know? How much was her reporting influenced by her close association with the Labour party and Cindy? How could she possibly write an unbiased report? And, oh, how much was she paid for her work?
Jobs for the girls, what?
Come on, Todd, stop playing nice, demand some answers and also demand a truly independent academic to reassess the woman’s opinions in light of what looks like some dirty, political dealings by our self proclaimed ‘kindness queen’.

Two new cases of COVID-19 today, detected at the border in people returning from the UK. I gather that the way the statistics work, New Zealand could have been declared to have eliminated the virus after 28 days of now new cases, and today would have been Day 24.

And over the Tasman, there are now two cases of COVID-19 stemming from the Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne last week, with more expected. Frankly, it’s surprising the Government was so blase about the Auckland protest on Queen’s Birthday Monday.

    All arrivées are tested, but this wasn’t so when these two came here. That was commenced a couple of days later.
    For all we know they may have been tested prior to leaving and been infected en route.
    All sorts of people have kicking up bobsie die about the heartlessness of the government for not letting people break the rules to see dying close relatives or attend funerals & now the government is incompetent for letting people break the rules to see a dying parent.

  BUT
  3) They weren’t tested on arrival, which would have picked up the infection before they were allowed out
  4) They will have been in contact with a significant number of people who have since been discharged from isolation and returned into the community
  5) They will have been in contact with a number of officials who, if my experience is anything to go by, will have been going to and fro from the facility and associating with others.
  6) Those officials are unlikely to have been tested.
  The notion that we can remain Covid free with the level of incompetence which manifests itself in the isolation process is absurd. The fact that tests have not been conducted on new arrivals, that assessments have relied on self-reporting when so many infections are asymptomatic, and the complete lack of control over mingling between people at different stages of their quarantine have been raised regularly in the media by people who have been through the process, and have been dismissed by Health Dept officials. Until the Health people face up to their responsibilities, we can expect to be subject to regular introductions of this virus via the border.

    Is that true? They arrived on the 7th were in isolation until the 13th (when they were allowed out). Are you sure they weren’t tested in that time in isolation? I got the impression (perhaps erroneously) that they didn’t perform a unscheduled check before hitting the road, but turned up for their next scheduled one in Wellington? Is that how it worked.

      No. At the time they went into isolation, tests were only performed on those who reported symptoms. In this case, one had symptoms which she put down to a “pre-existing condition” (and therefore didn’t report) and the other was asymptomatic. There is capacity to perform about 10,000 tests a day, but until we went into level 1, new arrivals were not tested. These two were only picked up because they had to go to a testing facility in Wellington as part of their release programme. And knowing the regime that existed before level 1, they will have been in contact with others who have been released into the community, and with a combination of people from the Ministry of Health, border security, Police and possible other branches of the services, most of whom will not have been regularly tested either (or so it was when I did my lag in late April)

        The person who had symptoms clearly lied about it. You can tell that from the statement that he/she ‘put it down to a pre existing disorder’. Ie he/she did not disclose it. There should be some sort of fine for that kind of behaviour when so much is at stake.

Watch the worm start to turn now. A second round of infections was always going to be the major risk to the govt. They burned all their political capital with the lockdown, I think with the public’s expectation that if they (we) did our part, then the govt would uphold its end of the deal. Today’s news shows the govt is failing at keeping the virus out through ham-handed quarantines. I think the public may start to turn on the govt pretty severely if this becomes a trend

  Why is everyone not tested at the border ? Where did they relieve themselves between Auckland and Wellington ? Were they in the Auckland facility managed by Mike Bush, who allowed the ‘inmates’ to walk around the city ?
  Our Government, and Bureaucracy tells us what a great job they are doing, but we constantly see holes in their practice – eg the Wellington hotel contact, the Auckland non-isolation, the porous borders.

From everyone in the Wellington region -Just want to say thanks very much NOT to the aviation security official who let these two people from the UK with covid out from quarantine without even testing them. Well done for inflicting these two UK people on our town and now have us go through 14 days of doubt over whether we have covid here or not.

Now everyone in our region is wondering if they have set loose the virus. The people concerned should thank their lucky stars they were allowed to leave to see their relative. Everyone else has had to do their time even if they had dying parents.

I have a friend who was not even allowed out for exercise one day under quarantine for being 2 minutes late for exercise slot. Her mother was as sick as these people’s parent.

Cannot believe these people are now ‘self isolating’ wtf??@&?? Bloomfield needs to stand down who ever authorised these people to leave quarantine for Wellington without testing.

  If folks are meant to be tested on day 3 and day 12 after arriving in the country, then just do it.

    Not only NZ is having problems with Wuhan-flu imports.
    
    Taiwan, a leader in containment of the pandemic, has reported two new cases coming through border.
    
    The cases were a married couple returning from working in Bangladesh, where they contracted Covid-19, but were discharged after treatment and subsequently tested negative.
    
    The Taipeh Times reports:
    
    They were diagnosed with COVID-19 and hospitalised in Bangladesh on May 25 and May 28 respectively.
    
    The man’s symptoms had alleviated by May 26 and he tested negative twice for the coronavirus on May 28 and June 2.
    
    The woman tested negative only once, on June 2, but the hospital said it had too many patients and allowed her to leave.
    
    They were discharged from the hospital on June 2 and remained at home in Bangladesh until Friday, when they left for Taiwan.
    
    Eleven crew members on the Bangladesh-Taipeh flight are “self-health management” and 23 passengers who sat near the couple on the flight have been put in “home quarantine”.
    
    Taiwan has been free of local transmission of the virus for 64 days.

It’s astonishing really. Two people get exemptions and, despite one showing symptoms, neither is tested. Instead they hop into a car and make their way to Wellington, presumably without conditions of restrictions. When they test positive our kindly PM cancels all compassionate leave. No matter that future applicants will be tested -possibly twice – no matter that in another case they may travel a couple of km. Sledgehammer/nut?

And now we learn that the big gun buy-up was precipitated by an investigator relying on a reference provided a father and son who never met Tarrant, knew nothing about him other than what they learned on a chat line. Outcome. Tarrant was expressly permitted to stock up! Reaction: legislation rammed thru without thought or discussion. Legislation that NZF look now to be re-visiting.
