It is now emerging that the person who shot the police last week was a gang member, high on drugs and had a semi-automatic rifle. He almost certainly wasn’t a registered gun owner and his weapon escaped the gun buyback scheme. The whole unfortunate incident seems to show a total failure of government policies on so many levels. Where is the accountability for the death of the constable?

  there will be zero accountability but in all fairness scum will always get weapons and want to hurt ppl, lockem up and get them off the streets is the only way but govt reluctant to do so.
  I only hope this dosent come back and hurt law abiding FAL holders or the 1st police death in many years is ammo to re arm our police force.

    There was a statement about 12 shots being fired at the injured cop, yet the witnesses described hearing only three shots. Not said officially as semi-automatic, but that would be a deliberate policy by police management because it would have shown up the farce of the buyback.

        He was shot by a rifle from a distance by an assailant who may have been the fellow who came to help the one who drove away from the attempted interception.
        
        We (the public) simply don’t know.

    All the legal FAL holders I know, complied fully with the buyback, as did I, because we have careers and jobs and (previous to the Xivirus) overseas visas/flights and so forth at risk. Because as we have seen with the raids on the law-abiding, the Govt and its enforcers will come down every very hard on the law-abiding if we do not.
    
    The gangs and other crims do not GAF, and they have been proven correct not to do so. No raids, just invites to tea FFS. I did not used to think NZ Police’s senior managers were cowardly, but they clearly are.

  Get rid of gangs and put everyone of their membership under lock and key for a long time and half of NZ’s problems would disappear. Compulsory sterilisation of them would help the future. But the alternative seems to be to say “tut tut, it must have been our fault for dragging them from the stone-age into the modern world”. FFS

One bright chap pipes up “How about that outfit in the middle of nowhere leader, the one that pretended to be virus-free?

New Zealand?”

The leader pauses, obviously considering the question then frowns.

“No” he says, “No good at all.

They kept pretending they were virus free. They weren’t. They just wanted the world press to adore their leader.

They came up with the don’t test = no confirmed virus strategy. Too dishonest even for us.

What their situation is now we don’t know but we certainly can not trust them.

New Zealand stays on the prohibited country list for now.

Anywhere but there!”

  Well, of course everyone knows that New Zealand is the absolute worst country in the developed world for Covid. There are thousands dying, just like Sweden. There is rampart community transmission, just like the US. Among the lowest rates of testing, just like the UK.
  Clearly much worse than Australia, who are absolutely going to keep their border locked against the hordes of covid ridden refugees desperate to escape the disease ridden hellhole of New Zealand.

    Last time I checked Sweden wasn’t overrun with cases not indeed has much higher rates of cases/fatalities than other northern and western European nations.
    
    Ignoring the Washington Post/NY Times/Guardian/SMH dribble with manipulated statistics there is little evidence, other than being treated as a leaper by their neighbors that Sweden’s approach has been a disaster. The handful of Swedes I know are aghast how the international media has been inaccurately painting the picture.

        Hi Wayne. Im not sure you actually understand what is happening and what these statistics represent.
        
        On the one hand, countries are trying to minimize or eliminate the virus such as NZ and Finland, with the hope a vaccine can be created in the near future and distributed to the population. On the other hand, highly condensed communities such as the UK and US which had no chance of containment, are riding it out as best they can. There population will achieve a lower transmition rate faster the longer it takes to find a vaccine, if one can be made at all.
        
        Do not get lost in the reported death statistics, they are meaningless and sensationalized by the media. It is all about managing the virus until either a vaccine or herd immunity is achieved. Whoever has it right wins, because if a vaccine is 5 years away, NZ will remain isolated from the world for a long, long time, where Sweden will have its doors open far sooner.

      Some of these comments give the impression that they think New Zealand has done a terrible job in respect to COVID, relative to other developed countries. It is a ludicrous proposition. No-one who is even remotely prepared to take a balanced view thinks that.
      Which is not to say there haven’t been some problems, but to blow these up to suggest that NZ has one of the worst records in the developed world in respect to COVID defies common sense.

        I try to take a balanced view but it appears that the Government delayed action for too long then panicked, overdid the lockdown and did way more damage to the economy than was necessary.
        
        “Eliminating” the virus was always going to be impossible unless the borders were closed and with the current border shambles the team of five million could be excused for being less than happy with the current situation.
        
        And the country is now up to its eyeballs in debt …

        So we had 24 days of no cases at quarantine. Then when actual testing starts on the 3 and 12 days — and bang we have 10 cases in a few days.
        
        Want to take a bet Wayne that there were a few that we don’t know of that got through and are floating around in the community?

Retailers circumventing the plastic bag ban with slightly thicker bags. I don’t suppose supermarkets will follow suit because money.

Nobody prosecuted so far, so the big fines are not tipping into government coffers. Don’t tell the government!

I would prefer the ban to be voluntary, and with such a remarkably low level of complaints BYO seems to be generally working.

The company referred to in the article – there is a link through to the another item on the impact the company will have on local businesses. I went there for the first time last week – will definitely be back. Large selection, good prices, efficient and helpful service. Offered a bag but declined.

  Supermarket plastic bags were always going to be more hygienic. And since bio-degradable plastic bags are readily available, I don’t see the issue.
  
  Most Supermarket plastic bags ultimately end up in land fill, but the mass of supermarket plastic bags in household waste is probably 1000 of that of other non recyclable plastic and other non biodegradable items.
  
  Banning supermarket plastic bags is like capturing the mouse that the cat bought in, and putting it outside, but ignoring the elephant. All virtue signalling.

    What gets me is that supermarkets are an ocean of plastic. Next time walk along and think about it. And none of that has changed. I saw an outfit last week selling plastic shrink wrapped corn cobs. So they peel the outer husk off the corn and wrap it in plastic.
    
    Then there is all the electronic and computer gear wrapped in plastic cam shells so tough you need a utility knife to break through.

    How many bread bags go into landfill each week? They can’t be recycled. As opposed to the HDPE supermarket bags which a) could be recycled and b) had multiple other reuses. Like the rest of the COL decisions – just for the good feelz.

      I recall reading that the cause of plastic in the ocean was not supermarket bags but discharge from washing machines. Our modern mass clothes made from reconstituted materials release tiny globules of plastics with every wash. That seems as believable as supermarket bags.

  Yes, the planting of vast deserts of pinus radiata on farmland to appease the utterly discredited UN IPCC is reminiscent of Lysenkoism under Stalin which involved a ruthless campaign against agricultural science. And it will likely produce the same desolation. The economic and the environmental damage will be enormous. The Greens’ Stalinist credentials are on display here for all too see.     Trofim Lysenko with Stalin’s support led a campaign in the 1930s against genetics which saw thousands of biologists rounded up and leading geneticists executed to suppress opposition to his quackery. The Greens’ opposition to gene-editing is yet another example of their debt to Lysenko. His legacy included the intensification of the disastrous famine caused by collectivization and Stalin’s eradication of family farms with the extermination of the kulaks. Perhaps we will see his legacy continued in the Greens’ next term as their quack policies continue to drive farmers off the land, including by suicide which is sadly all too common in rural areas these days.

Aviro Clothing has developed anti-virus clothing with a coating that lasts for 30 washes.
There would obviously be a big market for the right sort of clothing of this type.
Another field that may be profitable would be PPE that allows safe breathing on planes and in regions where disease may be likely.
Otherwise, it will be a constant case of how much do we have to isolate every time of new virus appears.

In light of the pending removal of the Cecil Rhodes statue from Oxford University’s Oriel College I wonder whether all the worthy recipients who benefited from Rhodes’ educational philanthropy through the establishment of the prestigious scholarships in his honour will be paying back the dirty money they received. I am sure that Bill Clinton and our own Chris Laidlaw will be first in line. Surely their consciences could not live with the guilt they must feel. They will be keen to display solidarity with the BLM movement, won’t they?

Personally, i find it very very disturbing that the ‘Ellerslie Novotel’ is being used as a government certified Covid Quarantine Facility.
Not only is it located close to the Northern Slopes of Remuera, but on a few occasions, me and my partner have actually stayed there.
It was sort of exciting to book a Suite, pack a couple of chilled Lansons in our carry-all, then head over for a full room-service dinner.
We’d be back home by midnight, no dishes, no mess. My partner would then pop back the next morning, settle the bill, and no one was any the wiser.
Well let me tell you, I honestly believe they’ll lose all their regular clientelle. As long as I have a hole in my bum, I’ll never ever set foot in that place again 🙁

In Wellington yesterday it is said by a reputable Press person over coffee that they do not think Cindy is faring well currently.
It shows in her looks and personal welfare is suspect – she does not eat properly as well as she is too busy.
However she is going to open a school on Thursday in Christchurch where the children will be allowed to mob her and cheer.
She should appear to be disturbed in that C 19 has not gone away, as she told the world, how great she art, and those around her are not performing to her expectation except Two Pies Megan who is actually doing the work of two people well her own and Cindys.

There is still no date for the sentencing of Brenton Tarrant over the March 15 mosque attacks.
On Thursday [April 30] Justice Mander issued a minute saying the matter had been adjourned until 2 June.
He hoped there would be some clarity by then around the Covid-19 alert setting the country would be in.
At Tarrant’s last appearance, Justice Mander said he wanted to ensure the Muslim community had the opportunity to attend the sentencing, something that was not possible under the current Covid-19 restrictions. – RNZ

Just a point to show how incompetence the Government has been with their testing at the border, to my knowledge most Countdown Supermarkets have been open since the pandemic started and many customers who comment on here and other blogs like to inform others how useless they are. So my question is how many cases of CORID-19 have come out of visiting there supermarkets through the pandemic and they have been at the front of it since day one. If I am wrong I apologize but I have Googled and cannot find one case, so if they can restrict why have the Government made such a mess of it.

  I never saw any close contact by way of hand shaking, hugging or kissing at any supermarkets. This would have been commonplace at the Gore wedding, the Hereford show, Marist College etc

Heard a programme on RNZ yesterday interviewing New Zealand born James Flynn, 86, Emeritus Professor of Political Studies, Otago University. Known for the “Flynn Effect”.

His book “In Defense of Free Speech: The University as Censor” was accepted for publication and then the British publisher pulled it saying it might be used to spread hate speech.

You have to listen to the Bolt interview for some clear thinking. You might not like the man’s politics but you have to admire the old fella for the clarity of his argument at an age when most of us will be drooling, demented and drugged up in an old peoples home somewhere..

A total waste of opportunity. He quickly asked about his book right at the end of the interview and shut him down Obviously goes against his and his ilks belief. What a wonderful chance lost.

Proof ? How about replacing ‘white supremacists’ with “soldiers of the peaceful religion” in you statement Danyl ?

The utter tone deafness and moral bankruptcy of Twitters politically correct posturing and policing, is seen from the context in which courageous Katie used the terrifyingly offensive phrase,

  Nor from the sub-continent either (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal). Not so much because of corruption but because the health care system and the testing capacity in all these countries simply cannot keep up with or respond to the number of cases there are and the number of deaths. In all these countries most COVID cases and deaths will be known only unto God.
  
  My sense is that at the moment ground zero for the pandemic is now India, with the number of cases and the number of deaths probably 5 to 10 times greater than the numbers reported. And getting worst. I shudder to think what the situation might be like on the sub-continent towards the end of July. The burden on the poor there will be horrific.
  
  I wonder if there is anyone who reads this blog who can report the situation on the ground in Varanasi and what is happening with the cremation pyres there?

    The life expectancy in India is about 70.
    One would have to think that seeing as most deaths from COVID-19 occurs at an older age the numbers are likely to be lower as a proportion of overall cases as compared to the US or Europe.

    India currently reporting 14,000 deaths. Five times that is 70,000. Ten times is 140,000. Population of India 1,400,000,000. Death rate from Covid based on 140,000 is 1 per 100,000. Usual annual death rate 7.3 per 1000, or 730 per 100,000 or roughly 11 million per annum. So perhaps the burden on the poor is for absolutely no real reason? Has anyone told them that based on official figures, they are about 2000 times more likely to have died of other causes than Covid in the last 3 months? Or that even with the tenfold increase you suggest, that the total of covid deaths is likely to be the same as road deaths in 2019? If God knows how many have died, I wish he would come down and bang some heads together.

    Multiply deaths by 200 for a more realistic estimate of number of infected. (wuflu IFR is around 0.5% though depends strongly on average age of population)
    Italy, Spain and UK have probably had about 10% of their populations infected. Brazil about 5%, India 0.2%

  There are already plenty of hazards in our lives which can kill in some cases and leave permanent scars and debilitation in others. We don’t destroy our economy, livelihoods and the prospects of future generations in order to avoid all of them.
  
  Nobody at all is arguing that we should be opening up the borders immediately or that we should take no precautions at all.
  
  But it would be good to have a rational, informed debate which did not start from the premise that saving lives, even if it’s only for a few more low-quality months, is the overarching priority no matter what the cost. At some point the cost bloody well does matter, and as far as I am concerned we are well past that point.

    Right now the plan is to intercept all cases at the border by a system of controlled isolation.
    This has proved problematic for a variety of reasons and the sky has fallen down.
    Any loosening of the restrictions at the border will go down like a lead balloon with anyone who has been vociferously critical of the flaws in the present system; I would have thought.
    An example could be letting in tens of thousands of university students, as favoured by National.
    Obviously the universities would have to provide non porous accommodation & testing for 14 days for all these people who might not necessarily NZs best interests at heart in the same way that Kiwis would.

      The Uni students come in knowing full well that they go into strict quarantine for 14 days…
      Anyone breaking quarantine forgoes their University course and is flown out of the Country on first available flight….

        I think it’s the decease experts who came up with the fortnight managed isolation, which means nobody on this forum either way.
        Sure you could deport transgressors. My first question would be: how would they know? Some poor fellow lay dead for weeks before the a university managed facility even noticed, and then only because it was drawn to their attention that someone was missing.
        There used to be 25-30,000 international students in the Universities. Who knows how many would front up if given the opportunity again?
        However
        Keeping an eye on that lot would be challenging, students being who they are and the threat of deportation might prove hollow if there are multiple infractions . . . .

What’s going on with new immigration law that relates to the more than 200,000 people who have work visas for New Zealand? Many of these visas will be the result of the university citizenship-selling rorts. With jobs slashed and rising unemployment because of the Wuhan flu lockdown, visa-holders will compete with New Zealanders for New Zealand jobs.

After submissions by the Law Society and others, the Immigration NZ has advised “stakeholders” that:

“The new powers cannot be used to change conditions if that change would materially disadvantage the class of visa holders concerned.”

Does this mean NZ doesn’t control its own borders, power over which foreigners can come into the country and stay here?

The move seems to restrict Ministerial power over immigration, requiring changes to be “balanced with select committee hearings”.

In that time, border crashers from a fleet of boats could be esconced between Northland and Taranaki.

The Law Society says the move will protect immigrants. A lot of lawyers sell immigration advice.

  Possibly set up a gmail account just for Kiwiblog posts. Check the boxes at the bottom of your posts. Then use google gmail search. It will take a while to use up 15Gb but easy enough to do a big delete via filters.

Assessment said Park could attract up to 200,000 visitors by its third year.

NZ quarantine system is still as porous as a sieve! They are putting different batches of arrivals at the same accom location. By day 14, those due to released could still be end up catching the virus from more recent arrivals at the same hotel, and show up as negative on the test. Crazy! There must be some circulating in our community but because the government is putting such a high bar to qualify for tests in the community, the community cases are not be picked up or reported!

This is the true crime about this lock down. While our hospitals sat empty because the govt decided to close them down to deal with the impending covid crush they would suffer that never happened.

The 22 Covid-19 deaths will pale in comparison to the wave of deaths from cancer that will hit New Zealand, a respected oncologist predicts.

Recently retired oncologist Dr David Lamb, who worked in the cancer sector for more than 40 years, was the head of radiation oncology at Wellington Cancer Centre, and currently holds an academic position at Victoria University, has called the Ministry of Health’s handling of cancer diagnostics during lockdown a “disgrace”. He says the move has signed the death warrant for hundreds of Kiwis.

Another day, another story

A Tauranga woman travelled from Scotland to Tauranga, with multiple stops in between, without a single coronavirus test and despite being in a 14 -day managed quarantine.

The father of a traveller, who Stuff is not naming, is angry his daughter was cleared from New Zealand’s quarantine without ever taking a single Covid-19 test.

She was also allowed to socialise with other travellers in smoking areas, and he says it is just “pure luck” the virus has not breached the border.

“I’m glad to have my daughter back but this cannot go on,” he said. “Our country cannot do what we just did [lockdown] or we’ll be on our knees.”

    Actually I use the bold to highlight it is an article. Text in capitals is shouting. As long as the mods and owner have no problem with the format I will continue to do so,
