Environmental advocates have filed a lawsuit – against four United States government organisations which rejected a petition calling for a ban on the import of New Zealand seafood – that could impact $200 million of exports a year and is intended to spur government action on an overdue plan to better protect Māui and Hector’s dolphins. Hence, their little splurge on it last week.

So a proposed update to the Māui and Hector’s dolphin Threat Management Plan sets new netting and trawling bans around key areas and leaves Shane Jones to blast Greenpeace for ‘deifying’ Māui dolphins in a ‘clever’ anti-fishing campaign. Chlöe Swarbrick says Eugenie Sage has given Shane a children’s book that explains the difference – Maui’s dolphins have bigger heads, which Shane should know. Shane and Winston are of course backed by big fishing interests.

Toxoplasmosis – a disease from cat droppings – is also a confirmed cause of death in Hector’s and Māui dolphins (see? – a “classic” example of “you couldn’t make this shit up if you tried”) so a toxoplasmosis action plan will also be rolled out. The dolphins can become infected by the parasitic disease – which reproduces in cats – by consuming contaminated water or prey.

Apparently the biological mechanism can last long enough in seawater to kill as many as two dolphin a year, and there are just 63 Māui dolphins left.

But that same biological mechanism survival must surely warrant close examination of Tasman Sea currents to determine if in fact it is New Zealand cat originated toxoplasmosis that is reaching the dolphins off Taranaki, or indeed infection emanating from Australian cats.
See how that opens up the whole argument? It’s like finding they put braille on drive-thru bank machines.
Kiwi cats may be effecting marine life around Easter Island, but some parts of eastern New Zealand, in terms of currents, are almost the circumference of the earth away from dolphins located in the Tasman.

The Government is to investigate riparian tree planting, but it would take a shit-load of trees to prevent cat poo remnants reaching wet-lands, waterways and the ocean, only to find that to protect New Zealand dolphins, such measures should have been carried out in Australia.

It is however, what this fucking Government deserves – to accompany their other crowning achievements.

  Even the scientists can not differentiate between Maui and Hectors dolphins without a DNA test which suggests they are same species just never inbred between the 2 groups. If this is the case then there are in excess of 15000 and not 63 as suggested by these enviromental groups.
  Much like the Albotrosses that breed on remote islands that tend through Darwins evolution to take on slightly different charateristics.
  Seems like the Greens intend on playing God by interfering with nature though selective breeding by stopping the impossible.
  Im with the fisherman on this and banning gill nets is the wrong course of action and only good for PR purposes and vote grabbing.
  Scientific fact that toxoplasmosis has killed more Maui/Hectors dolphins than Gill netting / Fishing.
  Also in addition Im absolutely against putting cameras on small inshore fishing vessels .
  
  Ok, On another note 145+ days at sea and waiting now for Dr report on all sign off crew and allowed to depart Singapore to homeport ( NZ). Health checks and all clear to be issued next week with onsigning crew all completing mandatory 14 days self isolation ( from all parts of the world) and granted approval to enter Singapore for Crew change as ESSENTIAL (Key) workers.

    At present, according to Worldometer, the US has 128000 deaths from 2.59 million notified cases, which translates to a mortality rate from infections of 4.94%
    
    We are getting 40000-50000 new cases in the US daily.
    
    The good news is that the death rate is dropping somewhat. The US was getting 2000 deaths per day during our lockdown. It’s now down to 700 per day. This fits what we know about epidemics, in that the virus becomes a less deadly strain. A virus cannot spread from a dead host, so milder strains survive.
    
    However if the death rate is dropping by a third, that still leaves a death rate of 1.7% going forward. or 17 per thousand infected.
    
    1.7% sounds like a small number, but as a percentage of the US Population, it’s more than the population of New Zealand
    
    If you are happy to massage the statistics to give you the lowest number, and that helps you deal with it, then fine. But the US is at 127000 dead. This is 4 times the estimated US flu deaths in 2018-2019.
    
    Bear in mind that these are reported cases as well. The states that rushed out of lockdown early are paying a heavy price.

      They also track the minute by minute “sales” of iPhones, laptops and lots of other technology.
      
      Neither my company, my wholesalees, or upstream distributors have even heard of them or be contacted by them, so how can they track world sales by the second? And manufacturers do not provide real-time sales feeds to stats sites – too commercially sensitive.
      
      They also “track” births. I don’t know anyone in any hospital that supplies up to the minute birth stats to WorldoMeter.
      
      It all made up guesstimates.
      
      As I say, Worldometer is a ‘one man band’ counter and prediction site, not an official stats site.
      To do what they do to any level of accuracy across all the metrics they claim, would be a big busienss business with a substantial footprint. But no, not even a Postal Box address, or phone number.
      
      He/She probably scrape govt websites for stats, and then calculate the number of whatever by dividing the relevant figures by the time period.
      Oldest trick in the book.

This clearly shows that it’s not Trump who is the problem; it’s idiots, democratic politicians, feckless bureaucrats, and shortsighted protestors. But I repeat myself.

      Exactly Engelbert, we in NZ can’t say how many died from CV-19. What we can say is X amount died with CV-19 but nobody was keeping a record of those who died from it. IMHO, all countries are conflating their numbers in order to make themselves look better than perhaps they really are.
      Remember, our corrupt CoL all patted themselves on the back when they thought they had rid the country of the scourge, only to open the borders and import some more and then through their ineptitude, valiantly set about exposing NZ’s population to the damned thing again.

Double Vision Brewery in Wellington have produced a beer called Juice Cinda with a stylised picture of Jacinda, in a very communist worker pose, on the label. This is just in time for the election campaign. Should this be counted as electioneering? They have just ensured I will never buy their products, and we are a family of craft beer drinkers. It really is vomit enducing.

    I reckon most “craft beer” is wanky as you say . It’s largely a fad.
    IMHO most is overpriced horse piss which has been heavily hopped so they can pretend there’s quality ingredients , but makes ’em too bitter to enjoy and I’ve sampled enough of it to come to that conclusion.
    
    But cos they’re expensive, wankers have to pretend to themselves , they’re enjoying it.

I remember when

Nick Smith ejected during QT Thursday.
Later Jerry Brownlie decided he had had enough and was also ejected from House,
When Smith was ejected Mallard said he would consider how long it would be before he could return.
When Brownlie asked how long he was out for Mallard replied it would be for the same time as Smith. However, Jerry was allowed to return for the evening sitting but when Smith tried he was eventually removed by the Serjeant-in-Arms.
The Dominion reported Smith said he tried to re-enter the house twice, seeking to learn when he could return. The speakers office was not responding to his emails.
“I think I am entitled to know, when I am allowed back in.”
Mallard said his office could not inform Smith of when to return to the House, as he could not be satisfied Smith would behave himself.
National lost the question in Smith’s name because he was ejected.

In my opinion, there is a big bloc of National voters patiently waiting for the Election.

They will mobilise and vote and there will be enough of them to send National into power (by two seats) along with ACT.

NZ First will be goneburger. The Green seats reduced, and Labour will not have quite enough numbers to swing this election in their favour.

Ardern is not as popular as the media think she is.

Question: If Trump *were to be* compromised by the Russians then what would he do differently?

So someone has ‘photoshopped’ an image showing National’s new billboards to imply that if National had been the government then Covid 19 would have run right out of control. Trouble is, two can play this game and a ‘photoshopped’ Labour billboard could appear implying higher taxation. Presumably Robbo will peddle the message that higher taxes are unavoidable but with the implication it is only ‘other people’ (ie fat cats) would pay higher taxes. This would force Todd and Paul to have to explain how higher taxation can be avoided which could be a more difficult message to get across.

        I’ve read on a number of occasions that it in fact does Albert – and expressed in people responding ‘Dont know’ when asked or in actually voicing that they will be voting left.
        
        For some the ‘shyness’ carries through right up until they are standing in the polling booth.
        
        I have heard some on here saying that they have noticed some resistance/hostility/sarcasm from pollsters when they have stated they will vote National. If true, and if not imagined, then you can understand the reluctance of some people to be honest when polled.
        
        I’ve noticed it myself online – about every six months I go on ‘Neighbourly’ and make some point about increased tax retarding growth, that the minimum wage increases hurt Maori and the young, or that we lose freedoms when a state grows and grows – and the pile-ons are extraordinary. I did this a couple of weeks ago and I was labelled a capitalist so-and-so who needs to declare his interests, a National plant, stooge etc etc – and the pile-on posts got 10, 15, 20 likes and my posts got none or maybe a couple.
        
        Sometimes even I think it right to just keep quiet.

One can but hope. The polls now reflect the near constant exposure of a very good communicator who has overseen a good result in terms of deaths and infections. (That applies to both the PM and DG but only the PM is the direct beneficiary). However, what goes up easily also goes down when other factors come into play. The inability of this government to implement any flagship policies has become evident and that will contribute to Lee’s desired outcome. At present I fear that it’s close to wishful thinking. Next poll will tell us more. David Clark and Phil Twyford are great National assets.

    It is interesting.
    
    We know, especially those of us who live nearby them in the ‘burbs, where the meth houses are that do the selling.
    
    We know which gangs and 501s are running the show.
    
    We know which international traders are most likely to be smuggling precursors in and from which countries.
    
    We know where the labs are most likely be set up.
    
    We have drones.
    
    And on any given day we clearly have at least 12 policeman not otherwise engaged who could do a raid – each of them armed to the teeth like they were when they raided the bunny rifle guy De Boer. Not to mention police people in scary black vehicles who are also currently underutilised.
    
    And yet, somehow, while the police keep saying meth’s a national problem and a tragedy (it is) and we all own it (no we don’t, dealers, suppliers and law unenforcement own the problem), I don’t see that the police are doing anything effective about it.
    
    Why not raid one meth house every day for a month? It would be a good start. We should start with the gangs which have publicly acknowledged they still possess illegal firearms, there shouldn’t be a problem getting a warrant for that.
    
    And no, not being a chicken hawk, I’m happy to be a medic on the raid. Been there done that with people far less pleasant and with better markmanship than New Zealand gang members.
    
    How hard can it be to use overwhelming force on a gangpad?
    
    I honestly can’t decide whether senior police are more scared of being called racist, or more scared of being shot at.

You would have to wonder what kind of low-lifes would set off the Fire Alarms at Rotorua’s Sudima Hotel, which resulted in all the quarantined Covid-19 detainees having to be evacuated early this morning?

Something similar happened to us about 4 years ago when we went there for a weekend and stayed in a top floor suite on the lakefront. Turned out that was also a false alarm!
But when all the guests were allowed back in, about twenty found their rooms had been broken into and their valuables stolen.
We’d never stay at RotoVegas again.

      A great point. Labour’s recent news media funding policies spell the end of a free and independent news media in NZ. It is a profound and fundamental shift in our democratic landscape and it has raised barely a murmur.
      
      Where are the hikoi the length of the country raising all hell yelling “Aotearoa is Not For Sale” or “Down with Government-controlled Speech!”? Where are the union-organised marches on Parliament? Where are the teachers letting kids out of school to paint placards and march about yelling “Long Live our Democracy”? There are none because a. Labour have done it and b. They know this will to be Labour’s advantage – so why would they object?
      
      Secondly, let’s face it – NZ First’s policies will consist of little more than:

Random musing on a Sunday afternoon. Why do posters here give a continental about being down-ticked? There seems to be a bit of angst around the subject from a number of regular commenters, along the lines of “who in their right mind would down-tick that?”

Trying to get inside the head of someone that religiously and blindly down-ticks every post is futile, and doing so publicly only encourages the childish and probably ideologically driven saddo(s) that get a kick from doing it.

Well, knock yourself out, my friend. All views are welcome, and when I get down-ticks I usually have a look at my choice of words or framing, and wonder if I could have expressed myself better. On many occasions that’s the case, so you’re doing me a favour and indirectly improving the level of debate. Thank you.

    I’ve avoided using the well known brand name but tinned ‘Caffeine & Muck’ has been in use as coffee, sweetened with condensed milk, I believe before the start of WWII. The other gem, likewise–it was commonally served as coffee before the coffee shops opened in the 1950’s.

Four new cases of Corona virus in NZ today. Why in the hell do we continue to import infected people? They have presumably all arrived on full flights so the chances of no one else infected are slim. They seem to be coming from India, Pakistan and Nepal.

  There needs to be some line in the sand re where people who are infected are coming from and if they are allowed in at this point. It cannot be an all comers welcome situation looking at the consistency of origin these infected people.

Interesting to see how the Greens plan to value assets while at the same time increasing income tax on, oh, employers, farmers, highly skilled employees, landlords.
