Will Todd Muller be National’s David Cunliffe? I couldn’t bear to watch his “Sunday” interview last night. I have never seen a political “leader” so poorly prepared and so hesitant. We are condemned to three more years of total incompetence.

  I think the powers that be have decided that either this election is unwinnable, or that they don’t want to win it.
  Rather than damage a credible candidate, Muller is a holding pattern.
  I think he will be rolled, most likely by Collins, once the economy is in deep recession and Cindy is exposed to all for the powder puff she is.

    That may be a reasonable theory but it ignores the obvious: Why not have Judith Collins as leader now? The economy is already a mess, Muller is too hesitant and yet the government is knackered…Labour are presently easy pickings. National ought be cutting and dicing the government at this very moment!       National’s made it’s decision and the rest should fall into line behind Muller as loyal lieutenants for the sake of the economy. Key and the big end of town would expect it to be so. Everyone’s house is on the line this election.
      
      Labour are the ones who are bordering on falling apart under a little more pressure. Cohesiveness will beat the PM’s popularity as that is all that Labour has. 😎

      I don’t believe the economy is a mess and also don’t believe National have gone into a holding pattern – absolutely no point in doing that. I don’t see Todd as giving that impression either. One tangible thing I’ve seen and mentioned weeks ago is the position on the border from the Nats. It seems to be all over the place when it is in fact a changing situation which the PM is consistent with and sitting out. I think a lot of people like that, as one less thing to worry about. She and Robertson are a good team, maybe not the quality of Key and English yet but moving in that direction.
      Looking at that and people concerned (a greater number concerned than not) about the border its plain who gets the vote.
      It’s not smart politics by the Nats at the moment, too frenetic which for some indicates a lack of confidence. I’ve seen jokes made of Nat supporters holding up signs saying “Open the border” with a line crossed through it and below “Close the border.”
      I thought Todd did well last night, although I may be wrong I don’t think we ever heard anything from JK about his religious beliefs which probably settles easier in the modern-day electorate.

        To be fair to both the opposition and the government, the current situation is rather unpredictable. Just look at the “now you see it, now you don’t” restrictions in parts of the USA. Should we have done what Sweden did (even though most of the Asia/Pacific chose a different path)? Where would that leave us in 6 months compared to where we are now? Will Australia, as a whole, get its act together? And so on.

        If Ardern and Robertson are potentially a great team, like PM John Key and Deputy PM Bill English, why are we not talking about Deputy PM Kelvin Davis? Why is Robertson no 3, below the token maori?
        
        Why, for that matter, are 3 out of the top 4 on Labour’s list male, while 3 out of the top 4 on National’s list are female? I thought Diversity mattered, or is it by some chance different when the left do it?

      Because it is unclear whether Collins has appeal to any other than those who would vote National or ACT come hell or high water. It is difficult to win elections that way. Added to that, and rightly or wrongly, I’m not sure that she has put the Oravida business behind her completely, and that’s not good if there is general uneasiness concerning National’s position concerning the CCP.
      She’d be a real roll of the dice, I think.

    Garbage. Muller is already higher in the polls than Bridges ever was. The change is clearly better than before. Its pointless National having a leader that is aimed at the people on here only, we need someone who will appeal the the middle, not the right and the base. Muller is doing fine. They need to announce policy to show they are different from Labour. For instance when and how they will open the borders. Plan for recovery. Collins is the perfect example of someone who appeals on here and will attract no votes from the middle.

For many decades they have chosen not to contest the principles of welfarism and big government, preferring a pragmatic approach which has given them jobs as cabinet ministers.   The trouble with such ‘interviews’ is the presenter and producer hold all the cards and can control the interview, including ‘fading out’ the interviewee if they choose.

  I think we watched very different interviews. I thought he was likeable, relatable, strong when needed and it was a great opportunity to introduce our next Prime Minister.
  
  I actually thought the bulldog Rebecca Wright was fairly lenient with him too, and couldn’t help liking him despite herself.
  
  The only question he didn’t answer the way I would’ve liked it was about the “diversity” question. he could have raised a few salient points:
  
  – we promote on ability not gender or skin colour, which is why three of our top 4 positions are women
  – we’ve seen how insisting on skin-tone diversity worked out for Labour, with Kelvin Davis seldom allowed to open his mouth, and not even appearing on election hoarding
  
  He also could’ve pointed out that Rebecca herself, was in fact, er, white. Why didn’t they send a “person of colour” if diversity’s such a big deal?
  
  Other than that I thought he did very well.

      I’d like to answer that but ….
      
      Any form of censorship based on the opinions of what others perceive is a slippery slope.
      
      Protecting the reputation the owner of a blog from lawsuit is well and good and even protecting the reputation of the blog itself by weeding out excessive racist or sexist abuse or similar is also a noble endeavour but I doubt many would agree that that is where moderation on this blog has ended.
      
      Now I am not advocating open slather and a particularly offensive post on another blog directed at an innocent victim prompted me to just up and leave but, there is a middle ground.
      
      If anyone thinks ardern gives a stuff about me calling her a liar, even repeatedly as signature line then I really do have a bridge …… or similar such frivolity after all, isn’t a blog by it’s very nature a bit weird?

        Re downticks, I didn’t assume or expect you did, and I don’t care about downticks, but thanks for clearing it up anyway.
        
        I’m mindful that this isn’t my blog, and defending or explaining moderation policy is well outside my jurisdiction, but my point was that it’s entirely possible to make strong, robust compelling arguments on KB, hurling opprobrium at those you disagree with, in an honest and considered way – without ad hom or swearing.
        
        Judith Collins made the point that “I think we’ve been lied to” beautifully and without naming Ardern, left nobody in any doubt as to who she was referring to. Such that Willie Jackson was gobsmacked, which was both surprising and exceedingly gratifying.

Lets be clear about Labour’s 5 point plan for the economy – they are aspirations, not plans, and on previous form, their goals are not realistic. I have an aspiration to win lotto, I even have a plan. But I don’t hold much hope of winning.

Aspirations lead to plans, plans to actions, and actions to results. As you go down this chain, Labour are weaker and weaker.

I can only hope (and I’m not holding my breath) that the media will continuously ask for the plans rather than toting out the easily digestible aspirations and why we should believe they will deliver this time around when their record is shaky at best.

    Not nearly enough has been made, in my view, of the proclamation that 2019 was to be “The Year of Delivery”.
    
    2019 ended up being just like 2018 in that nothing of substance was delivered, all that was achieved was that boatloads of NZers hard-won wealth was poured into plans and schemes dear to Labour hearts but which have achieved absolutely zilch in terms of hard, practical benefits.
    
    The flagship initiatives (KiwiBuild, Light rail, health, poverty, housing) went nowhere or backwards.
    
    I confidently predict these recent announcements will go the same way – nowhere.
    
    Labour and socialism – wonderful in theory, terrible in practice.

Sat down with my Nephew who is a big Labour party supporter to watch the Labour party congress yesterday and we were both left wondering what the hell this government is doing.
He turned to me at the end and said that if this is the best they have got then they are in trouble.
We both laughed at the announcement of one fifty million spent on R&D yet four hundred million spent on Tourism while claiming to also focus on job retraining. The only part he seemed to like was continued support for workers and unemployed. There was nothing to get excited about at the end even their slogan of “lets keep moving” was felt to be lackluster.
It won’t be hard for National/Act to put forwards a better economic recovery program, just hope they don’t botch it.

  I love the one about cleaning up the Kaipara Harbour. Yet Auckland Council has agreed to Waste Management (a Chinese owned company) building and operating a rubbish tip in the Dome Valley.
  
  Let us hope the Environment and RMA hearings throw this proposal out.
  
  With regards to this proposal, guess which Harbour all the rivers in the Dome Valley feed into. So a grand plan announcement that is a wate of taxpayers money.

      kowtow, common law was pretty basic and still allowed those in the higher echelons to carry on with slavery, child exploitation (including sexual), excessive working hours and good old serfdom. Let’s keep moving. But how much movement has there actually been?

Labour promised 100,000 homes over 10 years. They built 286.

Labour promised 1 billion trees. They planted 24.6 million.

Labour promised 1800 new police officers. Police numbers have grown by 472.

Labour promised all govt vehicles would be emission free by 2026. Currently only 78 vehicles out of 15,473 are emission free. (0.5%)

Labour promised to end homelessness, but the Priority A waiting list for government housing has increased by 154%.

Labour promised net zero emissions by 2050, but got off to a flying start by increasing coal powered generation by 500%, and emissions are projected to increase due to a handbrake on future gas exploration.

Labour promised to reduce net migration by 10,000, but net migration has actually INCREASED by 620.

Labour promised to reduce child poverty, but the rate of child poverty has increased from 14.2% to 16.5%.

Before you can KEEP moving, you have to START moving, and you have to start moving in the direction you mean to continue. You also have to keep moving in areas that have an effect. Investment must have outcome, and in that regard, the last government’s investment in broadband and fibre certainly paid dividends in lockdown.

Righto, off to catch the light rail. Might be waiting a while….

Some woman ran away from wherever she was being held in managed isolation the other day.
A day or two before I heard an interview with another woman who complained, from managed isolation, about how pampered the inmates were.
The places these people are being kept at are not designed like prisons and I would suggest if the people staying there were not pampered many more would be doing a runner. After all the only person we know of that wanted to be there was ‘homeless man’.

    You can’t claim an unemployment benefit if you don’t normally live here, which completely contradicts what you just said.
    The woman who did the runner can’t be deported, whatever anyone might like to happen, but she can be imprisoned, where the taxpayer will continue to pay for her upkeep.
    I wouldn’t have a clue why all these people are coming back to NZ. I know why I returned.
    The point of my original comment was nothing to do with that, but that if the quarantine was spartan conditions there’d be hundreds of them heading for the exits. Probably cost more to build & maintain watertight boot camp facilities than is being currently spent. Even then, as we’ve seen with those two young guys, people will still bust out.

      Airport security are being used at these facilities and if they can’t do the job why are we bothered with them at the airport?
      
      There is a huge difference between 5 star accommodation and prison. Most Kiwis don’t stay 5 star when on holidays or on business so why should these people?
      
      The young people didn’t escape, they were permitted to leave, they just didn’t return. There is a difference.

      The Hermitage Hotel close to Mt Cook is currently empty and is in the middle of nowhere so ideal for Quarantine. If you don’t like being inside leave and have the doors locked until you discover how unwelcoming a cold wet windy day in Otago is, in addition the Hotel is empty and in administration so a really good deal should be negotiable. I m available to the coalition of clowns for practical and workable advice for much less than any of the current clowns.

Heard the woman known as “Auntie Cindy Ardern” control freak on the radio this morning. Amongst a group of words which sounded like one line slogans .One of the slogans stood out . Yes the one that was created long after the disastrous panic in shutting down NZ and turning its economy into ashes over Covid-19. .Even though the Virus is still causing all sorts of stuffs up and confusion with dumb decisions by the Ardern gang out of their depth.
“Lets Keep Moving” sounds almost a death wish for NZs and its economy into ashes. Seems Miss “control freak” was uttering that type of slogan and asking for NZs to vote for her inept inane bunch of no hopers in Labour/Green Partys’ in the coming General Election.
“Lets Keep Moving” is a vote for them to control NZs destiny over the next three years .
The economy has been turned into ashes by Arderns’panic move. A vote for them will ensure the economy will never recover, as well as massive tax increases not forgetting record unemployment as well as huge queues waiting for food parcel handouts.. . Not also forgetting the good ship NZ will be competing with Venezuela, Cuba Etc!Etc! as a third world basket case. Yes the Socialist Republic of the South Pacific will be a reality and will satisfy the hidden agenda of the Commie/Socialist Ardern . Who would believe that type of forecast . Vote for her on 19 09 2020 and remove any disbelief.

    If you create 10 jobs but lose 9 in doing so, then the net gain is 1 job.
    
    These schemes should claim 1 job as the benefit, but they don’t, they claim the full 10 – and hide or don’t talk about the 9.

This news passed very quietly under the radar on Friday; New Zealand now has more than 200,000 people receiving unemployment support from MSD:

This should be a big worry to all of us, and it deserves to be front page news. Instead, it was hidden away in Stuff’s deep recesses, where you had to search to find it.

The Government is keeping unemployment artificially low at the moment via the extended wage subsidy, but that cannot go on for ever, and there is almost certain to be another spike when the second wage subsidy expires just before the election. However we will have voted, and sworn in our next government before the full extent of unemployment is truly known.

Is that cynical planning on the part of Ardern and Robertson? I think we all know the answer to that.

    No modern government should be building houses.
    
    There are very sound reasons why the government should limit itself to those things the private sector won’t do or can’t do. Building houses is not one of them.
    
    Government built houses will invariably be built which are not what the market wants, will cost more to build, will be in the wrong place, will be delivered less efficiently than the private sector can and places needless financial risk on taxpayers.
    
    It also masks the real problem – that if there are constraints on the market delivering low cost housing then fix the constraints! Unleash the private sector! They’ll do the job better, cheaper, faster and with no risk to taxpayers!

Plus, no time for scrutiny of the spin if policy only released a week out. $20bn will buy a lot of emotional votes. Nats are in a phony war stage with Labour as they don’t need to fire the first shots. Govt has to show how it will lead, but desperately needs National to tell them first. Today in Stuff Dr Siouxsie Wile says ‘People can test negative but still be incubating Covid-19, a phase that can last from about two to 10 days.’

So why is the risk profile not 11 days quarantine – with urgent turn around of Day 10 tests – and social distancing at home for 3 days. That would cut down some stress for returnees, increase throughput and save money for all and still fit the ‘no community transmission’ goal.

Pundits were quick to criticize Ardern for taking a ‘self congratulatory tone’ in her remarks but Ardern told Morning Report that was not her intent at all.

The ramifications of the Maui and Hector’s dolphin Threat Management Plan are sending chills through the inshore fishing industry. In the worse case, the proposed severe sanctions will send hundreds of fishermen to the wall.
This latest government move is the final and fatal straw for what are small fishing operators the length of New Zealand.
Taranaki fishermen have suffered blow after blow since the early 2000s. The first set of restrictions were imposed in 2003 pushing set net fishermen off the coast to four nautical miles.
In 2008 the restrictions were extended to seven nautical miles leaving about 6000 square kilometres of coastline closed to commercial set netting.
In 2012, yet another review of the threat management plan for Maui dolphins saw the restrictions move south to Hawera and the mandatory use of observers.
“We have had a massive amount of observer coverage in the Taranaki region with no sightings of Maui”.

    Surely she and Robertson will be looking to give out as much of the borrowed $50b they have created. Students will definitely be in for a free handout.
    
    She’ll probably do that rather than bail out the universities, which will be needed, with her keeping the borders closed.

Estate agents across England will be banned from using the term ‘Master Bedroom’ over its supposedly racist connotations as the Black Lives Matter purges continue to sweep through the country.

Can’t be long before Depeche Mode’s “Master and Servant” gets the boot, although that track celebrates S&M so they may get a woke pass.

I see that heritage NZ wants to get the currently disused central Wellington library heritage-listed.

Who are these people? Who appoints them, on what basis, what are their terms of reference and to whom are they accountable? And specifically, are they under any requirement even to consider the cost implications of their recommendations, let alone to meet them?

This is bad, and it shows us what is really going on out there.

The waitlist for public housing hit a new record in May, with close to 18,000 eligible households waiting for a state or community home.

Of the 17,982 households waiting over 16,000 were “Priority A” – meaning they had been identified as being in urgent need.

The waitlist has ballooned in recent years, trebling from the 5844 households on the waitlist when the current Government was elected in September 2017.

Has anyone heard anything about the education department asking for all the tablets etc they sent out to families back again. So the kids that finally are able to be the same as other kids and just got used to having them now have to give them back, how is that fair to the kids or there families.

At last, some good news from a Judge who turned out to be anything but dud. Bloke catches a drunken burglar with stolen bike in his driveway and tells hi to go inside. Is charged with kidnapping and several firearms offences, and the good Judge dismissed all 5.
