We might see something new this election – a major party with an overhang!

National got 41 seats last time, and could pick up the new seat and Ohariu. So if they get 43 seats, they would need 36% of the vote to avoid an overhang. Kaye and Bishop would be back, but Adams, Goldsmith, Woodhouse, Willis, Lee, Ngaro, Bakshi Singh would all be gone.

But if National only got 32% of the vote there would be an overhang of five. Biggest parliament ever!

  Does anyone else think that Woodhouse’s days in Parliament are over? Hard to see that his actions will be defensible in the slightest after the Heron inquiry, and hard to see that Muller would be able to continue to support him if it transpires that Muller didn’t know of Woodhouse’s contact with Boag. After all, Muller said that it was because Walker went behind his back was the reason that he could no longer be trusted. Woodhouse seems to have done the same thing hasn’t he?

    Woodhouse didn’t do anything with the information so he didn’t go behind anyone’s back.
    
    Woodhouse belatedly told Muller, the problem for Muller is he was talking at cross-purposes with the reporter mob, so it looked bad.
    
    Muller has to have a real clear campaign for actually supporting the people and growing economy. Not a campaign built on the dark arts. If he doesn’t then he and National don’t deserve to win over people from the centre left.

      In my business and personal email accounts I occasionally receive over 100 emails in a single day.
      
      Many are just trash or people looking for something and it can take time to work through them, especially if we have a busy day.
      
      I’m not saying that this is his problem but these guys do not sit around all day posting on blogs nor do they keep a tight handle on all side issues.
      
      In opposition they have way less support staff than previously and can also “skim” subjects that are of zero or little interest.
      
      I also often delete then have to head back to the trash to retrieve when the subject becomes an issue.
      
      Just saying that things aren’t always as clear cut as they appear.

        In general that’s all true, Tall Man. From what I remember Woodhouse saying in this case though – he was aware of their contents and who sent them, he didn’t act of them but didn’t delete them until the proverbial hit the fan. I’m pretty sure that’s what he said, but happy to be corrected. Not trying to demonise the guy, but not sanitising it either.

  What makes you think National will win 41 seats in the first place? My sources on the ground tell me, there is a groundswell support for Cindy and Labour even in traditional National seats. Even Clutha-Southland will be now won by Cindy’s crew.

An example of the work that industry has commenced in partnership with DOC and MPI is around trialling a mechanical bait-setter that deploys hooks 10 metres underwater and away from scavenging birds.
We need to think about how we can have better environmental performance and better economic performance, not one or the other.
While this is harder, it’s ultimately much better.

There will be a range of treatments in two years that will reduce deaths in the vulnerable. There will not be any effective vaccine in the next 5 years.
    
    Jacinda wants to run the current scam through the election and campaign as the lockdown purity Queen. Post election there will be giant economic hangover. Australia will give up and reopen. At that point the game is up in New Zealand. Jacinda will resign two years into next term. Head to UN. Megan Woods will become PM. Labour will lose 2023 election. Chris Luxon will be PM.

    While flu is an annual occurrence that can kill more people than COVID 19, we are told the only possible solution to COVID 19 is to lock everyone up (now on a sporadic ad-hoc basis in the UK), transform the global economy, wipe out every small to medium size business, destroy high streets, eviscerate the productive economy, enforce the wearing of masks (for no apparent reason) and vaccinate everyone on Earth.

      Whatever absolute level of danger Covid might present, it is killing more people than the annual flu. In the last six-month flu season in the USA, the upper-end figure is that it contributed to 62,000 deaths. In the last 4 and a half months, Covid has contributed to 137,000 deaths (and according to some KB experts, it is managing to do that in its “off season” with lots of sunshine, etc – things would worse if it was winter when the normal flu season occurs).

    There is a line of reasoning (has a following on KB) that says we should open everything up. tell the oldies to self-segregate and do what we can to make their last days comfortable. Many of them are going to die soonish anyway so they would just be taking one for the team – sort of like the Inuit putting their oldies out in the snow …. It would help with the cost of the pension too.
    
    Can’t say I have seen any pollies come out quite this plainly. 🙂
    
    Blind Freddie can see the current setup is not sustainable.
    
    To pick just one of many issues, the immigration system is totally overwhelmed by the number of reasonable business (apple pickers) and compassionate (Mum will be dead soon) cases.
    
    There are work visa people inadvertently trapped overseas who have jobs, houses, kids in school and skills that are needed here. They are at the back of the queue behind citizens and PRs.
    
    People who flout the quarantine system don’t help, although with a few thousand people currently in storage and four or five escapees the system is not leaking big-time.
    
    So if we go the “open it all up” etc way as above, I pick the Aussies will lose interest on the bubble idea. If we did it, they might eventually follow our lead, but it would not be this week.
    
    From a tourism point of view, the sensible country to open up to would be China – where a lot of our pre-lockdown tourists came from. Good luck with that one …. and of course we don’t know if the tourist flow would even restart any time soon.
    
    Like the rest of us Michael Baker is entitled to an opinion and it is a reasonably informed one. FWIW I don’t think the political or economic realities would let us us follow what he proposes.
    
    So what to do? I wish I could be as confident as some of the posters here ….

      Funnily enough it’s the first time you’ve addressed the issue rather than snarkily attacking those raising it as you have done previously.
      
      But you build a straw man as ever. No one is suggesting throwing the border open but are suggesting that a smart approach rather than total isolation is the way forward.
      
      As for Baker being “entitled to an opinion” well he’s appointed by the govt to sit on their own Covid advisory panel FFS. So he’s actually an expert by any definition.
      
      So as you’ve been happy to attack me and others asking what next what’s your opinion of remaining totally isolated for up to a decade? How long before we give up waiting for a vaccine? And ultimately why do you think asking for experts to suggest alternatives should be shouted down?

        Baker is an expert in epidemiology. What finally happens comes down to science vs politics. Like it or lump it, pollies have the last word.
        
        Of course we can’t stay isolated for ever – refer my allusion to Blind Freddie. FWIW I was talking (not here) about an Oz bubble about a week after we entered level 4. IIRC Winston was the first pollie to go public with the idea and I was ahead of him.
        
        Basically we have two problems – (a) possible spread of the disease depending on how borders are reopened and (b) doing something for the tourism sector which has been devastated by the border closure.
        
        There is some “have your cake and eat it” here, but doing nothing is not a choice ….

    Why can’t elderly, and others at particular risk, self isolate? Most would be happy to take a little extra care. It may shorten their lives a bit , but so would doing without expected contact.
    
    Most adults know that cut and thrust of daily lives is to be preferred to life in a sterile nursing ward.
    Better hope with risk than imprisonment by decree.

  Good article. We we would be better off giving the smelter the electricity so long as they cover the operating costs of the power station. Otherwise it will be white elephant. Once smelter goes hydro plant will be shut down.

    Exactly the same could be said for dairy and other agriculture too.
    
    NZ produces cleaner dairy, lamb, etc than just about anywhere else. If we kill off or cows then some others will make the milk – just with more pollution.
    
    If they fixed the way GHG accounting was done, then NZ would do much better.
    
    GHG should be counted according to CONSUMPTION, not production. That is a far better way to do the accounting as it allows people to realise the footprint of their consumption and low emissions producers (eg NZ) get promoted over high emissions producers.
    
    Immediately 95% of NZ’s agricultural emissions would go away.

It is currently producing the “greenest” high quality aluminium in the world, aluminium that would otherwise be produced by coal fired stations were climate change is not a concern. Makes more sense to me than smothering the productive farmland forever with introduced pine

      Of course you are correct. But all that matters to Jacinda is New Zealand zero emissions in 2050. She doesn’t care about global emissions or climate change. She wants to ‘eradicate’ emissions like she will erradicate the virus.
      
      The best thing the government could do is buy the smelter for $1 and keep on producing. It would save the owner a fortune in site clean up costs.

        According to the socialists the poor XX snowflakes cannot manage to run their lives without their very own Minister, and JAG can’t possibly control the destinies of more than half of New Zealand’s population on her own.
        
        Positive side effect: while the next COL ‘leader’ may be as stupid, she may not be as active, so overall that would be a plus according to the theory of stupid and active leadership:

  * The A-380 is going out of production.
  * Manapouri is far and away the biggest source of electricity in NZ and is around 250km from a cluster of other hydro generation plants around the South Canterbury back country that together also provide huge amounts of our power. As long as the lakes don’t dry up our power supply is guaranteed for the future for half a billion (if Prosser is right) and Meremere can be turned into a public toilet or something.
  
  Not that I’m suggesting the status quo isn’t preferable, but if the aluminum must close then one must look at what can be salvaged from the wreckage.

  A good clear explanation of the Tiwai smelter scenario. There seems to be a lack of understanding of how this industry benefits NZ Inc. Talk of ‘subsidies’, ‘corporate welfare’ is misplaced. The aluminium smelter converts low cost electricity into valuable overseas funds; pure and simple. The NZ economy is not going to survive by buying and selling to each other; we need and have always needed overseas funds to support our (2nd world) lifestyle.
  If the smelter shuts down a viable alternative (a green solution) could be to use the electricity to produce hydrogen as a substitute for fossil fuels.
  Or as Brian Gaynor suggests build a high tech hub in Invercargill and relocate the massive power hungry server capacity used by Google etc. to take advantage of the availability of low cost electricity.
  Many years ago a syndicate of German industrialists scoped out NZ for possible investment; they concluded that nowhere else in the world did they find a ‘combination of an educated, low wage white workforce, and cheap power’. Make of that what you will ; the workforce is now more diverse but other factors remain the same. To feed the Manapouri power back into the grid in the hope that prices will fall (yeah right!) would be a massive wasted opportunity.

    If you seek excellence, then you will find it where ever it is, and diversity is a consequence. Most immigration regimes are set up with this intention.
    
    The “positive” cultural aspects of diverse immigration (almost always referenced in cuisine and perhaps the arts) are largely a consequence of that regime.
    
    There’s no logical pathway which suggests diversity for diversity’s sake is likely to yield talent /outcomes better than the average distribution.

The authors don’t say how I misused their work. Instead, they attribute to me a position I have never taken: that the “probability of being shot by police did not differ between Black and White Americans.” To the contrary, I have, like them, stressed that racial disparities in policing reflect differences in violent crime rates. The only thing wrong with their article, and my citation of it, is that its conclusion is unacceptable in our current political climate.

Secondary schools as well as universities and other training colleges are in financial trouble because Wuhan flu has shut down the foreign-student business.

Behind the paywall at the Herald today, Simon Collins writes of secondary schools that are each losing up to $1.5 million each because of the border closure. It seems the foreign-student business will not be back up until 2022.

However, one of the private colleges which advertises itself as preparing foreign students with English schools for NZ “partner universities” says NZ’s foreign student business could grow from $5 billion a year to $8 billion a year because of Wuhan flu’s severity in the United States and Britain.

With heavy unemployment looming, and scores of thousands of New Zealand citizens and permanent residents likely to keep returning, will the country be able to continue its “citizenship for foreign students” deals?

Citizenship-for-study rorts by universities, colleges, and foreign institutes (sometimes foreign owned) are going to be a hard-sell for politicians.

Travellers, including returning Australians, arriving in New South Wales will now have to pay AU$3000 towards the cost of their quarantine.

The move was announced on Friday by the state premier Gladys Berejiklian.

    Of course the difference there is we have people who are deciding to come back to New Zealand that have not lived here for a while, that have homes overseas, that have decided in this time of COVID New Zealand is the safe place to be and so are coming back to New Zealand. We even have people who have never lived in New Zealand who have been given a job in New Zealand or are coming over for an event who the tax payer are paying to put in a hotel for 14 days. Because of COVID the country is broke, but hey let’s push it over the line a bit more with an expensive plan.

The Green Party would also introduce grants to halve the price of installing solar energy products in privately-owned homes as well as offering grants and low-interest loans to businesses to make a transition as well. All 63,000 social and community homes would also be upgraded with solar panels and batteries.

        I reckon you’d have more control using a conventional oven…
        
        I’m assuming you are experienced enough to know when the cake is done….
        I usually use a springform cake tin if I’m unfamiliar with the recipe.
        
        I’d stick to basics like – Oven at 180C; baking paper on bottom; check that cake has risen/firmed after 30 min (and smells good)…..if cake batter still looks sloppy, give it another 15-20 min.

        Hey thanks for that. Home for next 2 nights so will give it one more crack. Funnily enough the Wiltshire brochure sez the silicnone pan can be used in an oven up to 200c so mught give it another go in that.
        
        And all is not lost….my partner suggested i mix the first lot of batter in the ice-cream maker with some half & half then freeze it.
