Is the ‘Shane Jones Shuffle’ the most cringeworthy example of a politician making an arse of himself since Muldoon’s drunken calling of the ‘schnapps’ election 36 years ago? The David Seymour ‘twerk’ is a distant third.
With that performance, Jones took NZF from two point something to one point something.
Good.

  You and I certainly won’t be voting for NZF in the forthcoming election and in my case I most certainly never have.
  However.
  Remember that no matter how much of a fool PM Muldoon may have made of himself when he called the snap election in 1984 National still won 36% of the vote and Labour only 7% more.

        She represented National in as non communist a part of NZ as you could get for three terms, buster.
        Furthermore.

        While I’m not quite as old as you are, Kev, I have been following politics for more than 50 years, and I well remember the events leading up to Muldoon calling the snap election.

      I might also point out that from what I understand if someone is made redundant they will collect this insurance regardless if it’s a two income family.

The problem is with those that have never had a job and have zero intention of gaining one. Headline “Noodles and bread amongst food most at risk of causing tooth decay in kids”

“A NZ study has revealed some suprising food as key culprits of tooth decay. “

But then read a bit further:

“White bread, refined breakfast cereals and noodles are among the foods most associated with tooth decay in children, according to a research study.”

Ok, so now it’s only white bread, and only associated, not caused. And they add sugary drinks etc into the mix.

In fact: “some foods were associated with a lower number of dental caries, including frequent intake of wholemeal or whole wheat bread”

So bread has now gone from uber villain to super hero!

And of course, read a bit further and it emerges that the most important single factor is parental involvement in brushing teeth and Pacific children have 4x the problems of the average population. So it would seem that Pacific parents are particularly crap at this role.

Still put is a good dig for poverdee meaning they can’t afford good food. Sorry but, whole meal bread costs no more than white and caring for your kids costs nothing. And somehow they can afford heaps of fizzies too.

$1uff, correlation (association) is not causation. I’ll bet a servo pie that these families also have cars that fail WOF more often. Are we going to say that failing WOF causes rotten teeth?

  Over 20 years ago at a school dental clinic with one of the sprogs , nurse said single biggest cause of preventable hospitalisations for children in Enzed was tooth decay.
  
  With all the education and all too easy access to dental care for all children in NZ through the excellent school dental system one has to ask , how the hell this situation got to this and continues …….

  Dr. Van Kerkhove then explained that transmission of the virus from asymptomatic patients appears to be very rare:
  
  It still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual.”
  
  The next day, there was panic at the WHO but Dr. Van Kerkhove’s uncensored comments were very clear as they validated questioning the purpose of the entire Lockdown process. If an asymptomatic person is not spreading the disease but might publicly increase herd immunity, then why wear a face mask or be quarantined?

I saw a few minutes of John Campbell’s hit piece on National this morning, ably assisted by Nicky Hager. Ripping into National as the party of ‘Dirty Politics’, but conveniently missing that it was Megan Woods that started the latest round with her assertion Walker was a ‘racist’.
No one can excuse the release of personal information in any way, but the clearly media lead campaign against National is blatantly biased.
I suspect unless there is a major cock-up by Labour, they are a shoe in for the coming election; as such, National need to go full gas and get stuck in as they now have nothing to lose.

I”m dismayed and disappointed to see ACT adopting anti-1080 as a policy platform. I have to hope that that one quietly disappears if they do get to a position of policy influence. The practical prospects for saving New Zealand’s indigenous wildlife have already been set back by the Greens’ ideological nuttery, the cause doesn’t need any further handicaps

  Agree. Seymour seems like a guy who looks at evidence. Hopefully he will on this issue. Because the evidence is overwhelming that without 1080 it would be a disaster for native birds.
  
  What infuriating is that the Minister in charge has stopped all research into GE options to control and possibly wipe out possums and stoats. 1080 is what we have until we get something better. The current minister is hampering that search. #1567 of the damaging decisions by this government.

    are you an idiot? Have you lot even stepped foot in the bush after multiple 1080 drops over the years?
    It decimates the bird life as much as the predators, a few areas I frequent gets 1080 every 3-5 years and I can tell you that after 20yrs of going there there as rarely any birdlife or song anymore. 1 area close to home I do possuming on the bordering station the 1080 boundary is a small stream, 1080 fell 2wks ago and yesterday while I was checking my lines it is like night and day. where I park up is deafening bird song and multiple fantails follow you around yet cross the creek and it very quickly peters out, 200m in theres nothing and I walked 30mins up a ridge no life at all and only 1 dead possum seen.
    
    1080 has its place but this lot drop the shit everywhere its just convenient, keep 1080 for the rugged back country and use ground control in easy access foothills and youll get a far better response.
    
    btw if your a beliver in 1080 you should petition doc to have 1080 contracts linked to RTC and monitor results and have them paid on same terms as ground control guys. they dont get paid unless preditor densities are below specified thresholds (1-5% depending if ospri or doc) 1080 is usually a failure and struggles to get below 10% hence why they need to retreat areas so frequently.

    I physically went to the launch yesterday. Seymour advocates promoting a GE means of pest control. The problem is, scientists in NZ are not allowed trials ( the moratorium remins)& have to go overseas ( California I think he said) .

    Totally agree re 1080.No one likes poisons but they are essential to manage biosecurity in NZ.
    The alternatives to 1080 are all so much worse for the environment that continued use of 1080 is a no brainer.

  Voting for someone on what is basically a minor issue like 1080, euthanasia, banning gangs, is dangerous if the party is then put in a position to control the economic direction of the country by use of a veto.

My Facebook feed yesterday had a sponsored ad, from the book publisher promoting Golriz Gharaman’s book. (and they are not running facebook ads for any other books, just GG during the election period) How is this not election advertising and should it require a promoters statement? I did however laugh when I clicked on the ad it took me to sale of the book where GG’s book is sold and categorised under “Children and Teens” “Science Fiction” and “Fantasy.” Accurate!

$1uff thinks Queenstown could be reinvented as the Silicon Valley of NZ.

Huh?

Silicon Valley (the real one) formed in the orchards south of San Francisco due to four major reasons:
1) Land was given by a university to start a techno park.
2) At the time there were no communications worth talking about. No internet. Not even proper fax. It made sense for companies to co locate.
3) Massive industrial spin up due to government expenditure on electronics in the space and military sectors.
4) Californian weather made it an area good for year round aircraft testing and development (same reason the movie industry ended up there).

So how would Queenstown do?

Well first off, we how have the internet and video conferencing etc. I work at home for companies across the world including USA, Canada, China, Russia, UK, France without needing to travel (last time I went anywhere was 2008). The need to co-locate and make a “Silicon Valley” is long gone. People can work from anywhere in the world with ease. I am often on conference calls with engineers from 4 or 5 countries at the same time. There is no need to travel.

Just like the age of the CBD is over, so is the age of the “silicon valley”.

Unless the NZ government is going to develop a huge military fleet from scratch, there’s unlikely to be any huge stimulus.

So, sorry, there’s no silicon valley coming to Queenstown or anywhere else for that matter.

    I agree with you but it all a trade off – those benefits might make it worth battling your way into Wellington CBD 2 days per week. 5 days per week will become less common because it is two hours out of your day and it is horrible unless you have the luxury of living in a place like Oriental Bay or Roseneath and walking. If you live in Lower Hutt or Seatoun not so much.

      Only another 20 years to go before Wellington ceases to function at all.
      It’s the tail end of some mountains and their ranges at the foot of the North Island as they come down to the sea. Early arrivals set up on the beachfront with the hill immediately behind and later filled in part of the harbour to add a bit of extra commercial space. The people lived on the hills and travelled through the valleys. Maori negotiated the use of some flat land for crops and work places. Anything else was a bonus.
      
      Now it is full with cars. Think of dodgems–the more you have on the rink the less freedom to move. Any adaptation will be drastic and enormously expensive.

    Certainly there is that personal buzz, but you can get it from a once in a while meeting and use internet most of the time. It is still important, but nowhere nearly as much as it used to be.
    
    Familiarity with social media etc often means people feel more connected with their remote internet groups than physical groups. That physical connection is losing value. If you’re on Facebook (I’m not) then your friends are likely to be from all over.
    
    In the 70s and 80s Silicon Valley became the “go to” place for those interested in electronics/computing. It drew potential workers. It drew companies needing to find those workers. It drew the venture capitalists. We can now make those connections without physical proximity.
    
    When I was in Silicon Valley in the early 90s there were people there who thought it was impossible to find good programmers/electronics people outside of the area.
    
    That has all changed now. We often assemble work teams from many countries to work on specific project and over 90% of the people will never meet in person.

      This is gonna sound like a wizened raisins comment (i.e. even more bitter than sour grapes 🙂 ) but I find it weirdly fascinating how many patients I have encountered during and after lockdown – who really just love working from home to not have to deal with anybody else – say things to our team along the lines of “everybody should work from home” to reduce the potential for transmission in their previous Parnellian-Thorndonian communities, of the ChiCom Virus. It wouldn’t be appropriate at the bedside, so I refrain from saying “well should I work from home and just look at you on a screen while my faithful robot PA does everything else including probing and suturing”.
      
      There are so many conversations in the media and elsewhere about working from home which entirely ignore the fact that the majority, especially low-paid workers who bake and load and drive and build and weld and repair and wire and tunnel and concrete and paint and…. you get the drift… have zero possibility to work from home.
      
      Faugh. This new work from home craze is just for the people already in occupational clover.

        I agree 100%. For the office workers, working from home is a possibility and a good way to work 90% of the time. This is the world MSM “journalists” and their bubbles understand.
        
        It is telling that the stock photos they put in their articles about work and employment are generally someone sitting with a laptop and a cup of coffee. To them that’s a typical person.
        
        But your forklift driver can’t really work form home because the stuff that needs moving is in a warehouse. Besides, those tyres will rip up the carpet in the lounge!
        
        But circling back to Queenstown, the same really applies: the physical service/production/construction industries that make up the bulk of our jobs can’t move to Queenstown. Can’t sweep Queen Street from Queenstown.

  Politicians are way behind on developments in the way people work. What happened to Grant Robertson’s “Future of Work” that he promoted when they were in Opposition? It sank without a trace. Now the best he can do is to berate public servants to “go back to work to support the coffee shops”.
  
  Last time I vised Wellington about 2 weeks ago, the traffic was appalling. Wellington used to be an attractive place. Now it is a dysfunctional place to work. I only go there to establish relationships with new clients. Once they are established, I plan on staying in touch by video and restricting visits to no more than once per month. Pre pandemic it was once a week.
  
  I have friends of a friend that I met for dinner when I was last in Wellington. Young couple in their 30s, two young kids. They invited u around to their new townhouse for dinner, their first home. It is out at Lower Hutt near a train station. It is new, but the build quality is not great. It will not age well at all. It cost them $715,000. I just despair that young couples are buying tick tacky townhouse in Lower Hutt for that kind of money.

    I think the CV19 just normalised the remote working stuff. What was previously seen as a negative is now a positive.
    
    This week I’m “attending” three software/electronics workshops that would normally each require two days of travel, hotels and a few thousand $ in airfares. I can do that and still do 30-40 hours of work and have a meeting with my other clients.
    
    Perhaps we’ll see a bit more of a shift back to the smaller towns.

  Apotex was founded by a couple of Canadians based on a sue-and-unpatent generic model. It is very successful. Unfortunately the founders were murdered in Ontario a couple of years ago. The implications for Pharmac are not huge as they work on a tender model with both branded and generic drugs. Apotext will still sell generics in NZ, they just might not have a physical presence.

      Yes, you’re correct to be concerned about supply chain management and logistics. COVID has shown that the lack redundancies in the system through progressive “improvements” (i.e. eliminating slack) can cause massive shortages when a JIT model is employed. I don’t know what NZs national capacity for stockpiling (either in $ or physical space) is, but you’re probably very interested in the post from Master Mariner showing that crew changes re vastly overdue and the shipping industry is about to experience a supply contraction. Apotex will still sell NZ stuff, but how long it takes to arrive is a whole ‘nother issue…

      Pre CV19 you’d normally get a script filled for 90 days. Now it’s 30 days at a time.

With the mess at our borders in mind, is it time to get rid of dual/multi citizenship for adult NZ passport holdholders? While the personal benefits are clear, what are the benefits to the nation of allowing some citizens a bob each way?

Should people who hold only a NZ passport be given entry priority over those who hold more than one passport? Should NZ citizens have entry priority over residents, permanent or otherwise?

Easy for non NZers applying for citizenship but what about NZ born kiwis who are granted citizenship to other countries by their parents or grandparents being born there? I see Australia has restarted their deportation of undesirables that they halted due to the Covid lockdown. Good on them for deporting non Australian criminals back to their country of origin. I see we are setting up a special quarantine centre for them So they can have a two week holiday before being released into the community. Wonder if they will be charged for this?

  Deportees won’t be charged for their 14 day stay, as we don’t have a payment policy in place yet. They are however going to get ‘wraparound services’ to help them reintegrate here. That will no doubt involve multiple agencies and lots of extra PPE. Thanks taxpayers.
  
  I see the government is having a go at Australia again for ‘exporting their problems’. AFAIK we don’t have a similar policy here, and reckon that would be a law and order play that would sit well with voters.

    Sure but it would not concern Australia at all. They would be ‘great fill your boots’. The numbers of criminal Australians in New Zealand who would be deported would be quite small.     What difference would it make to you if you knew their location? It will not be a secret for long anyway.
    
    These people are NZ citizens and have paid their debt to Oz society. Most of them went to Oz with as children with their parents and subsequently went wrong. Some have (Australian) wives, houses and (Australian) kids. Some are being deported on “character” grounds without having been convicted of anything.

Also, immediately deprive all Australian residents who have not got New Zealand citizenship of any access to welfare so we have an equal playing field on both sides of the Tasman.   – 3x in 70 years is 2x in something like 45 years.
  
  Divide the doubling time into 72 gives you the growth rate, divide the growth rate into 72 gives you the doubling time.
  
  so 2x in 45 years is 1.5% a year.
  
  So a growth rate of 1.5% will give 3x the population in about 70 years. When I was at school 60-odd years ago the NZ population was about 2m. Now it’s about 5m …. same sort of numbers. Is 1.5% too high?

      Some people have been under the delusion that you just need to boost the population to 10 million or 20 million and somehow New Zealand would be economically secure.
      
      What a terrible mistake. We have been slipping down the rank of nations’ GDP per capita, a measurement of international wealth. We are now well behind Australia, and behind even Britain.
      
      For decades, New Zealand hasn’t exported enough to give us a positive balance of payments. The population surge hasn’t helped.
      
      We’ve made two notable mistakes: allowing educationists to sell citizenship; and the business entrant programme. The latter’s largely created a bolt-hole for rich Asian communists at the life stage when they are attracted to a leisure-oriented country with Western living standards.

We were listening to 1ZB and heard them report that the government has just handed over “…12 new homes built on a site in Lower Hutt where only four had stood previously!”
My partner ran the numbers on the back of his napkin, and using the same criteria, calculated they could get 144 on our section. Although the pool would have to go.

Evidence is starting to become clearer that Miss Ardern who missed out on the sobfest at CHCH on15 March 2020 is going for an action replay .
Yes at that time it was alleged that many Muslims from Iran one of the high Covid-19 countries were already in NZ waiting for the Sobfest .
Finally at that time under public pressure she panicked and brought in the Four Week Lockdown .
Now it seems she is about to use taxpayer money to fund numerous relatives of the CHCH dead to arrive in NZ for the Trial of the Australian shooter. They will be housed and fed and hugged and will probably get an exemption of the 14 day Coronavirus Quarantine Lockdown fiasco .
Yet there is talk afoot that the genuine NZ Passport Holders will be charged big bucks for having the temerity to return home to NZ . WTF is going on .

        I respectfully disagree. During some of my time overseas I was working with the Australasian and other nationalities victims of Islamic terror bombings, notably in Indonesia but not only there. There was zero absolutely zero financial assistance from the New Zealand government when our citizens were blown up in other countries for the relatives to come and see them, and return for justice.
        
        If relatives of victims of the Tarrant eco-inspired atrocity, as sad as it is for them, want to come to New Zealand, sure, but they should pay their own way and get in the same queue for flights. Everyone else has to.

      Do people get the same release doing it on zoom or Skype as they do in person? I’ve seen a few cases in the states where the victims families have talked about how healing it was for them to look in the eyes of the person and realise they can’t hurt them any more. That they got their peace reading their victim statement in court. I think what these people need to move forward be it in person or online it’s the least we can do. It should be not what we want but what they want. They are the ones who have a life time without their loved ones or a life time with the injuries and memories.

        It is really important for victims to be able eyeball the perpetrator. I was involved in a serious case and victims were flown in from at least two countries and accommodated at the tax payers’ expense for both the trial and again for impact statements and sentencing.         I read it when I was overseas just after the atrocity, and I think two main reasons that it has been suppressed, is because the system of government he admired more than any other is the modern Chinese: and because he spoke loudly about the desire to make eco-improvements, a la Watermelon Party.
        
        I also don’t think it’s at all coincidental that his previous travel before he came here to commit his murderous acts, was to Turkey, Pakistan and allegedly North Korea, as well as France. I finally received a reply this morning from the Human Rights Commission relating to my complaint (dated 27 May – so much for 15 working days reply) regarding the Capital & Coast District Health Boards announcement that Maori/Pacifica will be going to the top of the pile for elective surgeries, due to their ethnicity. And here it is …..

Can we really believe none of the journalists who had been given the info last week by Walker (eg Radio NZ) didn’t tip off their mates in Labour?

The interview by Mike Yardly on the Aussie Deportees this morning was interesting. Cindy found it too complex so she was on Leave. Flavell …no..too thick. Little… no too biased in favour of criminals. Hipkins.. Young, smart, but Mike had him squirming and panicking in next to no time as Hipkins tried to justify putting a pack of bad criminals up in some luxurious hotel for a fortnite at taxpayer expense, and if they keep the location secret, with the help of the media we will never know how often they leave to visit the supermarket or pub or ladies of the night.

“In terms of the Covid-19 Tracer App, a question was put to Bloomfield about the lack of scanning happening. A journalist read our a statistic: For every 1 scan there were 6 posters not scanned daily. Bloomfield says it’s very important people keep scanning the QR posters. He says it feels like life in NZ is back to normal, but overseas “there is still a significant pandemic offshore”. He reiterated how important using the app is for contact tracing.”

This app is predictably a total failure. It has been downloaded by 16 percent of adults and is used on average, twice.

Google already tracks everywhere you go (unless you opt out). I can look up “Google Timeline” and tell you every place I have been for the last five years hour by hour. Why on earth did the Government not just say “Please enable Google Timeline so you can tell us where you have been”? That would have cost nothing. Astounding.

Surprise, surprise.
“Labour going policy-free in election campaign.”
Perhaps not so much since they have scrambled through this term working from the secret agreement while leaving so many broken promises in their wake. Instead they will hang their hopes on their handling of the Covid 19 pandemic while avoiding being confronted with the economic disaster. Perhaps the biggest “unintended consequence” yet seen from any of their actions.
Or should that be inaction? Those extremely valuable days wasted waiting for the Christchurch sobfest to take place come at a massive cost. Compounded by being forced to go “too late, too hard for too long”. Confirmed by the hastily prepared lock down banner seen each day as it rapidly advanced to Level 4. Done so fast there was not enough time to create native gibberish which only appeared later.
Expect it will be a nervous wait for them until the PREFU is revealed so close to election day. A measure introduced by National to prevent the revelation and shock when the “books” are opened after elections after Cullen returned to the opposition benches.

      She broke out July 4, so 7 days in. Spent the night in a cell.
      Since then ? Maybe back in isolation, but shouldn’t the clock start again ?
      Also, five policemen involved in her arrest are now in isolation.
      And the court appearance is in Auckland, her brother lives in Dunedin, so I wonder (not really) who pays for the trip south to her brother’s place, to be ‘on bail’.

  This blog has talked about the 2017 art auctions for some time and I recall the scenario being paintings are donated to the Labour Party then auctioned off to anonymous bidders and the original paintings are deemed the donation. There have been comments that the bidding was rigged and the anonymous bidders are Chinese businessmen. Interesting to see if the KB discussions turn out to be right.
