I read a disturbing paper recently in The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest and most respected peer-reviewed general medical journal. The authors have been examining the potential for increased in child (and maternal) deaths in 2nd and 3rd world countries as a direct result of lockdowns in 1st world countries.

An analysis of the 2014 outbreak of Ebola virus in west Africa showed that the indirect effects of the outbreak were more severe than the outbreak itself.

Already with COVID-19 we are seeing similar disruptions. The pandemic and the response to the pandemic are affecting both the provision and utilisation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services.

The paper goes on with the methodology used to map the impact of reduced supply of food, medicine, and healthcare.

The number of additional deaths increases with the severity of the coverage reductions and wasting increases, with scenario 1 (smallest reductions) resulting in an additional 2030 maternal deaths and 42 240 child deaths per month, and scenario 3 (greatest reductions) resulting in an additional 9450 maternal deaths and 192 830 child deaths per month

In 1990 more than 32,000 children died worldwide each day. By 2018 this was down to less that 14,000 – still horrible, but better. The research in this paper suggest a surge in child deaths of between 1,400 and 4,800 per day as a consequence of lockdowns.

So 1st world lockdowns, basically politicians whipping up fear and then using it to entrench their power/saviour status, is killing thousands of children every day.

  In Southern Africa (even South Africa), significant numbers of people are going hungry for the first time generations – probably the first time since the Boer War.
  
  On top of that, compliance has gone down with many HIV patients not showing up for their ARV drugs and TB patients missing their treatment too.
  
  Drug resistant TB is already becoming a problem and non-compliance will not just create a short term spike in disease and deaths but will quite likely increase problems long term.
  
  The impact of CV19 is not the virus itself. It is all the little hidden unintended consequences of the lockdowns that will really cause a longterm degradation of quality of life.

  Absolute crap. The paper does not mention any co-relation between 1st world lockdown and the disruption with medical supplies, hospital resources and food into third world countries. IN FACT, IT DOESN’T EVEN MENTION LOCKDOWNS. That’s just you trying to get the egg off your face.
  
  This is the best comment showing the true picture and indicates the importance of the management of Covid. Indicating to me that NZ’s response was by far one of the better than the US for example, we managed food supplies, emergency services, exports, and medical care (albeit reduced in expectation of possible pressure on hospital beds.)

    In past epidemics, health systems have struggled to maintain routine services and utilisation of services has decreased. As WHO notes, “People, efforts, and medical supplies all shift to respond to the emergency. This often leads to the neglect of basic and regular essential health services. People with health problems unrelated to the epidemic find it harder to get access to health care services.”

    COVID-19 has also disrupted the global pharmaceutical and medical supply chain. The low buying power of LMICs and their lack of infrastructure for domestic production are disadvantageous in ensuring a steady supply chain.
    
    If you want to advocate the notion that lockdowns are not a primary contributor to negative impacts on food, medicine, and medical personal supply chain, then be my guest.

  Wellington is dying. It’s geography has been ignored. It was built where the sea met the hills.
  It’s like dodgems, you can’t fill up the rink space indefinitely–each added car just denies further freedom of movement.
  
  The CBD is built on land reclaimed from the harbour. Flat land between hills is scarce. The flat area of the continuation of the beach became Te Aro and was all Maori occupied. An agreement allowed some use of that for crops and now industry and access to land behind and more hills.
  To get a direct airport connection they will probably have to build a motorway around the coast from Pt Jerningham to Evans Bay then a possible elevated motorway to the airport.
  
  Wellington was going to be on the other side of the harbour.

    I know Wellington is geographically challenged but surely they can do better than the last 20 years. Hong Kong is geographicaly challenged and has millions of people. I found it easier to get around Hong Kong than Wellington.
    
    It cannot be fixed quickly but it would be very helpful if the Council started to get at least some things right instead of everything wrong. Fist thing – pull the plug on the town hall and the library. Demolish that whole precinct and use it for mixed space including some afforadable housing. Leverage the value of the land with developer and then build a greenfields new entertainment venue out the back of Tawa – plenty of land. With lots of parking for many cars.
    
    I could go on and on and on. So cannot fix overnight but just start doing some good things instead of 100 percent stupid things. Oh and sell shares in airport too.

      The city is still the city. Tawa/Linden is on the North boundary. Largely hilly too, with some flattish areas forming a few big valleys. This is echoed in motorway development where enormous earthworks are needed.

        It gets a lot of mean mouthing from people who have never travelled south of Patea, yet are hypercritical of this lovely and pituresque city.
        The only thing we find unpalatable is the excessive number of public servants slithering along Featherson St/Lambton Quay each morning.

    I lived in wellington for a while, employed at the head office of a major bank.
    
    It does have a nice ‘feel’, different from the typical city.
    
    But, I feel wellington is a place to have a fun time for a while, not raise a family. Not a practical city.

    When covid-19 removed the need for Wellington City Council to spend a lazy $8million on events, a brand new councillor with zero experience of anything except student politics proposed the money be spent on ‘environmental and technological advancement, emissions and waste reduction, and Kaupapa Māori innovation’. AKA pet vanity projects with more than a wee bit of virtue signalling thrown in.

    His misfortune is that Council is full of pinko Karens who want to busybody their way through everyone elses lives.
    
    A perfect worked example of why there needs to be a property qualification to vote.

      Nope. Foster was a prime architect of driving through the justification for the Island Bay cycleway with his cycling mates.
      
      But he is still scared of the reaction from his own suburb on his job–so no cycleways to Karori.

  2. Yesterday morning the PM said she took advice and passed on the details about Falloon to Collins;
  3. Collins suggests Falloon lied on Monday morning to her and the Police previously, yet by Monday lunchtime the dirty details about Falloon were starting to be reported in the press. How given Falloon’s lies and his wish to keep matters quiet? Who leaked?
  4. Yesterday morning the PM said she would deal with a sextext perp in her team in the same way as Collins. Apparently, someone has made an allegation against a Labour MP to Collins and Collins has told the PM. So we’ll wait and see how matters unfold…..

Seems Judith is being blamed for putting information about an errant Labour MP into the public domain, even though it was the Media who asked her if she had received that information.
But he added that it seemed to be a contradiction for Collins to say she didn’t want to get involved and then to put the matter into the public domain.

Collins disputed that she had thrown it into the public domain, saying on RNZ that she had been asked a direct question on the AM Show and she had answered it.

    The problem for those wanting to play the game is that our communications levels of today don’t leave anything to the imagination or hidden.
    Even living in a nanny state which socialists love to manipulate to their advantage, all sides cannot get away with to much without the general public finding out.
    Morally, all sides have plenty of secrets, problem is keeping them from the public.
    Couple of Nanny states that come to mind are New Zealand and Victoria, both appear to have very similar ideals of how their current leaders see the new world and how they treat their voters.
    I, as many here will already know who the chief suspects are, I am pretty convinced I know who it is, as most in the media already are aware.
    We all just sit and wait for it all to bubble to the service.

Obviously Winston needs to clarify what he is talking about – he is the one who time to time insists “words matter” and, in this case, he has the added duty to be clear in his claims, as it was he who selected Ardern to be Prime Minister as he formed a Coalition Government with her Labour Party.

He greatly vaunted his own honesty in an interview with Magic Talk Peter Williams yesterday morning.
Clarifying ‘woke pixie dust’ accusations against the woman your selected to govern the country, will demonstrate your honesty, Winston, or lack of it.

  Mind you, that’s probably easily explained if her home is at Stuff. As I informed Stuff during one of their opinion polls when they asked for “honest feedback”, I find their “woker-than-thou” SJW attitudes pretty off-putting. Strangely enough, I don’t particularly appreciate being lectured sternly by a bunch of woke activist snowflakes, when all I’m looking for is the news and current affairs, preferably presented in an open honest and impartial fashion. So Stuff is generally at the bottom of my go-to list, and I have managed to get quite good at avoiding the vast majority of click-bait headlines and skimming over the “it’s time for another LECTURE on how privileged/racist/sexist/white our society is and why it’s ALL YOUR FAULT as a straight white male”-type articles – hence why I probably have managed to avoid seeing Alison Mau’s diatribes.
  
  More to the point, is she actually relevant or effective? Having a very quick glance through some of the recent stories under her name, it seems to me that most of what she writes on these sorts of matters is aimed at the echo-chamber audience who read these sorts of articles to confirm their own already firmly held opinions.

    Winston has never worked with the Greens as far as I know. The Greens were not part of the coalition discussions, Winston left it to Jacinda to get the Greens on side. The Greens could have formed a coalition with National and got a heap of ‘green’ concessions but the membership did not want that. So James Shaw spent nearly three years outside the tent holding his pee, and now is a safe time for him to let it go.

    The US is falling apart at the seems along racial divides, and it is not because of Trump, it is in spite of Trump. He has been far too accommodating up to this point. It’s an Anarcho-Tyranny where these criminal mobs of Antifa and BLM are acting with impunity.     You cannot have a country without enforced order and respect for the law. It is impossible. He is perfectly entitled to round up these degenerate losers, because they are America-hating criminals. This should be only the beginning. He should be sending in thousands of Federal Police (he is constrained in using the military domestically) to occupy these neighbourhoods, start cracking some skulls, hauling them off to await charges for federal crimes, and showing them who’s in charge. Full amnesty and therefore voting rights to tens of millions of illegals, the electoral college gone, and all of the other insane anti-American plans they have in store. It will be a one party state effectively. So they will do what they want, without the possibility of ever being held accountable.
  
  You don’t have to like Trump. But if he loses, that is it, and the once-great America is done. Finished. Lights out. There will never be another Republican administration until the end of time. The Red States are ever-bluing due to the immigrant-stacking that is occurring. In the context of “not guilty until proven so”, is not the whole set-up of enforced hotel isolation based on the fact Government does not believe returning citizens, in the cases of those who have their own houses to go to, will honestly follow the instructions that are a condition of their re-entering the country.

Therefore, are they not only assuming you will break those conditions and be guilty of a crime you have not yet committed, but are now discussing how to make you pay for that detention for breaking rules you have not yet broken.

The other approach would have been to severely punish those who actually did flaunt their re-entry conditions.

Absolute crap. The paper does not mention any co-relation between 1st world lockdown and the disruption with medical supplies, hospital resources and food into third world countries. IN FACT, IT DOESN’T EVEN MENTION LOCKDOWNS. That’s just you trying to get the egg off your face.

This is the best comment showing the true picture and indicates the importance of the management of Covid. Indicating to me that NZ’s response was by far one of the better than the US for example, we managed food supplies, emergency services, exports, and medical care (albeit reduced in expectation of possible pressure on hospital beds.)

  You really can’t compare NZ to USA. They are different on so many fronts.
  
  The most obvious is size and scale. NZ is is tiny and is not even the size of a major city.
  
  NZ has a single, centralised government. USA does not. The federal government can, generally, only step in when invited by governors. Hence some states had extremely poor outcomes and others much better.
  
  But your last point is telling:

  Did you notice the “If”. If they are able to do so. ie. in magic “if” land, not in the real world.
  
  Very few countries are able to do so because the CV19 responses screw up logistics and services throughout the world and the whole global supply chain. Not CV19, but the reaction.
  
  When somewhere between a quarter and half of people in some countries are no longer getting treatment for diseases (eg. South Africa with ARVs and TB) there are going to be long term consequences.
  
  When children skip pediatric clinics because the parents are too scared or nursing staff don’t turn up or there is no transport then that has long term consequences.
  
  Worldwide (including NZ), people have been skipping doctors appointments, blood tests, dentistry etc.
  
  Did you know that putting off having a bad tooth fixed can actually increase your chance of heart attack?
  
  Closing schools will likely lead to a generation with an educational weakness. Education is a prime contributor to health outcomes.
  
  NZ did not dodge this either. Hospital outpatients were shut down when they could have remained open. I was supposed to get a cardiac assessment in the first week of April. I am now getting that at the end of this months (ie. a 4 month delay). In my particular case this is unlikely to have impact, but multiply this by tens of thousands of cases through NZ and there are going to be negative consequences.
  
  Whatever people do ends up having unintended consequences.
  
  Sure, as a world, we “saved” a few – generally frail – people but they will be a long time dead when the real consequences are being felt.

  Recreational hunters are expected to clean up their carcasses well away from tracks, campsites, waterways, and huts and can lose their permits if they don’t abide by these rules….but it’s a bit difficult to prove who has left the mess if you stumble on carcasses (minus back legs) some weeks after they’ve been shot.
  
  The problem with tahr is that much of the country they are in is relatively inaccessible on foot. It would be completely uneconomic and probably dangerous to retrieve all the shot carcasses.
  
  In the high alpine environment where tahr are found, the only 2 mammalian vermin are likely to be stoats and mice….. both could feed on carcasses, I suppose.

In the Falloon case how did the email recipients receive what ever they did.
To receive any data via the email system the sender must have your email address.
How did Falloon get that information ?
I don’t suppose that the complaints had some earlier contact with Falloon ?
Perhaps the Police can establish that promptly as it is very relevant.

I suspect these messages were not sent in the last week so why have they suddenly come to the fore? It is obviously because said woman’s parents are Labour supporters.   I know nothing, but reading between the lines, I suspect this was actually a crude meme about the current government rooting the country that was being passed around by email / messenger. Presumably with some connection to Ardern herself which is why the adult female recipients parents sent it to Ardern. Needless to say neither side wants to admit to what the content actually was, but we know that the nudity involved was solely female, which rules out the usual explanations.

Interesting program from Radio NZ about the dysfunctional organisation that is Oranga Tamariki, under the stewardship of the CEO Gráinne Moss, and Minister Tracey Martin.

It is long( 23 mins), and the fun from a political viewpoint starts at 8 minutes. The CEO has 10 deputy chief executives ! Social Workers have been removed and replaced by ‘managers’.
“It’s like Gráinne Moss and Tracey Martin are on some sort of Fantasy Island with their spin doctors and the whole of the front line are rolling their eyes as they regurgitate press releases”.
Martin’s responses are hilarious.

The sad fact is that the work initiated under the last Government to work closely with the (surprisingly few) families and whanau underlying 95% of our social (and economic) problems has been abandoned, and replaced with an overriding emphasis on corporate-style marketing and comms.

However, can you imagine the outcry if there was a serious outcome and the possibility had been ignored.

  Question Time is set up to support the Govt 99% of the time, with the Speaker now an added bonus. You have to be a pretty inept Minister to fail badly.
  And Ardern isn’t the gormless ‘girl’ some try to portray her as here. She knows how to use the smile, comes prepared with one-liners, attendant cheerleaders and canned laughter.
  Collins rightly said she doesn’t underestimate Ardern’s abilities, and she won’t expect any great ‘wins’ at Question Time.

  Yes I watched it, had been looking forward to it. Judith after the crap she dealt with yesterday was a bit flat. No wonder. As usual the press focused on a joke zinger. Which is par for the course. I realised watching it that this final session before the election is unlikely to give us the Judith vs Jacinda fight I hoped for. It’s pretty boring and slanted towards those who answer. The public are largely uninterested in things like the light rail failure. The elections all about covid. And Ardern is much better in the house than she used to be. I would not hold my breath in the hope she will stuff up and give Judith a gotcha moment. We will have to wait for the debates. Although a colleague from the left told me Ardern’s going to limit them. No idea if he’s right.

First, at the Red Radio site today she is cited in a report implying New Zealand is heartless and wrong because because a six-year-old Korean boy isn’t able to attend school in New Zealand because his father can’t get back into the country, and he’s the boy’s only legal guardian.

The father, a solo-dad, says he brought the child to New Zealand at the beginning of the year because “he wanted the best for him”.

The education visa rorts are now being extended to primary school children???

Melissa Lee tells Radio NZ that Education Minister Chris Hipkins needs to step in on the Korean’s behalf.

Was watching Radio NZ part of Lee’s role in the National Government while Wily Willy Jackson, the Maori activist now a Labour MP, was running the virtual takeover of Radio NZ by the Maori tribal radio network and its Maori allies?

  While we’re on Radio NZ, you have to laugh at a piece on the Red Radio web site whining about diversity in the National Party. By diversity it is on sex, gender, skin colour – the usual grizzle fest.
  
  You wouldn’t know we’ve got a female Prime Minisiter, a female Leader of the Opposition, we were the first country to introduce votes for women, nor that, our media, especially the political media, is heavily feminine (if you listen very closely over a few days you might hear a news-conference question in a male voice).

  On the information to hand, it seems a bit that way. The other party hasn’t complained, so far it seems like an affair between two consenting adults. Tacky for married people, and not good in an employer/employee style of relationship (not sure whether former means when the affair was happening or since), but I doubt anyone is thinking about going to the police about it.

I am listening to the PM’s news conference but she is talking in riddles in circles in cliches. If you actually think about what she is saying she is incomprehensible. The words are in English but if you take the whole it does not tell you anything at all.

Contrast that with Judith Collins. She speaks plainly in short sentences. It is awesome.

What has been forgotten in all this haste to make people pay for their self-isolation is that there are some thousands of New Zealanders, both in the country and returning, have had the virus. Why should they even be made to go into isolation, let alone pay for the privilege?
The Brits have an antibody test that is 98.6% accurate in showing past infection. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to use that at the border than put someone who has had the virus into isolation? And before you say that having previously been infected is no guarantee of future immunity, the principle upon which vaccines work is to assume that there is such immunity.

  Been around for yonks – was announced in the media days and days ago. They will have made zillions of kits by now so we can buy some and start using them next week. Not ….
  
  The idea is a good one. It would be interesting to know if the missing 1.4% is false positives or false negatives or both. I’m not sure what is an “accepted” accuracy rate (above my pay grade) but 99-ish does sound good.
  
  But realistically – if this is as good as it sounds – the whole world will want it. Subject to that assumption (as good as it sounds) we might be able to buy some in about six months.

    Seymour then told Taxpayer Union director Jordan Williams, who told Hutt-South MP Chris Bishop’s father, John Bishop, Peters alleged.
    
    He said the information was then passed to Newsroom editor Tim Murphy and blogger David Farrar.

You can’t actually fire people anymore. The law requires you to go through a very adveserial process which involves notifying the person involved that there is going to be a meeting to discuss issues that could involve their future and that they have a right to have representation and the potential results of this meeting, etc., etc.,

Then you have to consider the results of that meeting and make a decision based on “good faith” or you are going to be in a world of pain.

So no-one gets “fired” these days, that’s total BS by Labour designed to buy votes.
