So the teenage National candidate for Palmerston North made front page news because someone dug up a picture taken when he was 14 doing a very poor Hitler impersonation.
All 14 year olds do that sort of stuff FFS.
So to preserve the balance, when will we see the footage of a younger Cindy as head of the World Young Socialists addressing everyone as ‘Comrades’?
Nah, didn’t think so.

    Hamish Walker is not racist – there are news articles of him marrying a woman of Maori decent and of him advocating for Indian or Sri Lankan families in his electorate.
    
    So what happened was Megan Woods deployed a “dirty politics” dog-whistle style attack and the non-questioning MSM lapped it up (thinking they caught National out).

      Remember we cast two votes. Even if young voters thought it “cool” to vote for someone 18 years as MP, that doesn’t (and is unlikely, imo) to translate into more National party votes.

    Whataboutism is broken because different brands get held to different values.
    
    National is branded as the competent party: solid leadership, experience, a firm hand on the tiller. An 18 year old is inconsistent with that branding.
    
    Greens are the fresh young faces filled with enthusiasm and idealism. Greens don’t need experience or competence – that is not part of their brand.

      National is a broad church – I cannot see the harm in National having ONE young candidate/MP.
      
      Remember young voters see National as bunch of old fuddy-duddies parents etc (so they vote Green or Labour, because they are supposedly “hip”).
      
      Well fuck the Greens and Labour – they don’t represent all youngsters at all! So a bit of healthy competition can only be a good thing, sometimes!

      Yep, and from what I’ve heard from people in the electorate, Wood is really making an impression with young voters.
      
      I most certainly wouldn’t have been mature enough at 18 to even contemplate a political career, but from the couple of times I have met Wood, he seems very mature for his age. I doubt he will win Palmerston North, but the experience he gains from the best part of a year spent campaigning will be invaluable, wherever his future lies.

    Worth a down tick. Actually cmm I know William Wood personally and he is more mature now than many older Adults I know. We need diversity in Parliament in age as in other criteria. The WW at age 18 is a different person from the WW at 14 – just the same as perhaps you were at that age.

      That’s my impression too HO, from the couple of times I have met William. He is an outstanding speaker, is confident, and seems comfortable with people of all ages. From what I have heard, he was the stand-out candidate at final candidate selection last year.

    Then the ILG thing happens.
    So called “news” journalists/left wing activists decide – OK, maybe put the blow torch on this kid and see what dirt we can come up with to undermine his candidacy.
    What they came up with is pathetic and certainly not news. But, it’s served its purpose.
    Whatever happened to “be kind”?

      Yes. I’m for primary full-voting rights to be limited to net-taxpayers, those with military or front-line emergency service, and married couples. I prefer the franchise to be limited to those who both contribute and have skin in the game.
      
      Other people not in the above groups can vote but theirs will be worth 50% of the full franchise holders’.
      
      Anybody with a criminal record that ended a jail sentence – no vote for 10 years. A 2nd jail term – lose the franchise for life.
      
      No votes for refugees for 10 years, and immigrants with dual citizenship as long as they retain that duality. No non-NZ-born people eligible for PM. No (ex)-Communists eligible for Cabinet to PM posts.

    The corruption of the news media is now plain for all to see. Not only have the accepted the government’s $50 million bribe but they are delivering on it with glee. National will not get a fair hearing from these partisan trash so they must concentrate their efforts on using social media and town hall meetings to engage with voters. We should also boycott TVNZ and TV3 – it does have an impact on their ratings and revenue.

      What 14-year-old William Wood was doing, was “taking the piss” out of the 11,000+ New Zealanders who died (many of them horribly) fighting Hitler, as well as of the many thousands more who were wounded (again, many of them horribly). And, not to mention, of the untold thousands of New Zealanders whose lives were essentially put on hold for five or six years, while WWII was fought.
      
      What no-one has mentioned, is that I thought, for 15 or more years now, teenagers (especially), have been told repeatedly, that they must be careful what they put up on social media, because, once up, it’s there forever. That future potential employers could see the behaviour displayed there and decide, on the basis of it, not to employ them.
      
      Yet, just four short years ago, a “Nat prat” (if not then, one certainly in the making) posted behaviour that has now come back to bite him in the bottom. Fortunately, for him, he was 14. Had it happened, say, 18 or fewer months ago, the Nats would now been looking for another candidate.

    There was another 18-year old young man from the same city called Craig Wickes about 40 years ago. Was selected for and played for the All Blacks at that age, in fact while still at Palmerston North Boys High School.

      And of course William Wood is also an old boy of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, which, by coincidence, is my own alma mater.
      
      In more recent years, it has also been the school that produced cricketers like Matthew Sinclair, Ross Taylor and Jacob Oram, All Blacks such as Ngani Laumape and Liam Squire, and a host of young men who have gone on to very successful careers.

        William Wood was clearly taking the piss out of someone (Hitler) whose values he didn’t agree with. We can see that because of his stated values. And who didn’t as a child put a comb on your top lip, raise you right arm, and mock Hitler.
        
        Comrade Ardern was doing a Stalin impression for values she did and still does agree with. We can see that because of her current values, in present time application / enforcement in NZ. She is a hard core totalitarian.
        
        Anyone can be wise in hindsight. “Oh we never knew she was like Hitler or Stalin reborn.”
        
        Very few are wise with foresight. “Based on her values and the pattern, if she is not stopped we will have a totalitarian regime”.
        
        The MSM clearly lack foresight. The $50m clearly lowered the average media IQ overnight.

  @Captain (8am) – as I watched Tova O’Brien’s hysterical report of the errant 14yr old boy, I was reminded of a recent interaction I had with the hypocritical Saint Tova.
  
  We were leaving an evening function at Te Papa, and as we walked past Tova and her friend sharing a fag outside the entrance we watched Tova flick her butt onto the ground and turn to walk back in. My partner loudly called her out on it, and pointed to the bin 2 metres away. Tova gave us the death stare, then we could see her brain ticking over – and she flounced over and picked up her dirty rubbish and threw it in the bin. Seems that Tova can do the right thing (even at Our Place) but only when someone is watching.
  
  Tova’s ovareaction to the kid’s shaving foam moustache show that she holds a 14yr old boy to higher standards than she can manage herself at almost 40yrs of age. Tova’s hypocrisy is one thing, but bullying a young boy on national TV shows the true level of gutter sleaze she comfortably swims in – a public apology to the kid would be the least she could do.

      I don’t restrict the deaths to WWII though. On aggregate, Stalin’s purges and his reign of terror in particular left many more millions dead than under the Nazis, and the vast majority of these were the internal population.
      
      Moreover, even if there was some approximate parity, we can also include the Maoist regime, plus all of the other Soviet satellites and aligned States around the globe. This gives a clear lead to the Communists.
      
      The combined deaths under all Communist regimes is utterly mind-boggling, yet wearing a Mao, Che Guevara, or Stalin t-shirt has plenty of cache among the ignorant. As I said, no one other than those of us with historical awareness either know about or care about how the Communists behaved.
      
      The point is this: both the Nazis and the Communists killed many people, yet only one regime is condemned absolutely, whereas the other is lauded by a sector of society.
      
      We can conclude, therefore, that the outright and universal condemnation and proscription of Nazi ideas or insignia (and more broadly, the lumping-in and association of anything that may be construed as “Nationalism” with the Nazis) is not about deaths per se, but is principally about the characteristics of who was killed, and by whom they were killed.

I can see a 6-10% correction in the North Island, but not much in Christchurch, prices are so low there comparatively, there’s just not a lot of scarcity there. I don’t think the banks will roll over easy either, why would you flood the market with mortgagee sales than take the hit in interest payments for a few months and keep a customer?

TV One reporter last night, and the Left twitterati since, are claiming National (Nick Smith) is racist in denying Maori electorate voters the right to ‘vote strategically, as the voters of Epsom do’, by stopping them swapping electorates at will.
Let’s give this two seconds thought. Epsom voters split their votes to gain better representation, an Act electorate MP (and possibly another Act MP), and a National govt vote.
Maori electorate votes could do the same by voting Maori Party electorate and Labour Govt.
Epsom voters cannot swap electorates at will.
Their argument makes no sense, but still Maiki Sherman screams at Nick Smith ‘Do you think Maori voters are stupid ?’
No Maiki, but I think you need a better argument.

If Maori voters had the ability to jump off the Maori roll every time there’s a bi-election they could do what Winston did when Labour gave him their votes and upset the actual representation in parliament.

Interesting now the present excuse is just how important Human and Civil Liberties are . Not a word about the Millions of NZS who just a few weeks ago lost the same rights when Legislation allowed Police to charge into Residential Homes without a warrant .

My neighbour is a New Zealand citizen but caught in Melbourne at the moment caring for elderly parents. If he returns to this country in the near future he will have to spend two weeks in Government supervised isolation rather than come straight to his home, because the Government don’t trust him to honour the medical requirements they would require of him.

So because they assume dishonesty or non-compliance, they insist on enforced hotel detention.
To add insult they will soon likely require at least part payment of that hotel detention.
Corrections prisoners are not even treated that way.

Some might say others, who have broken conditions of their detention, lead to this government position. It’s not racism, but something else similar – to judge a nation on its lowest common denominator.

However, much of Magic Talk Radio was devoted yesterday afternoon to the current court examination of the legality of Government Lockdown, Level Four, and whether the Prime Minister Ardern, for one, lied (their word) in some matters.

It will be interesting to see if those who are required to part-pay for their own hotel detention are being forced to do so by a Government less honest and moral than the behaviour and co-operation they apparently expect of those in their temporary custody.

When will reality knock a little glitter of some of the pixie dust off the Saviour of the Nation, Jacinda d’Arc

  Same as in talking about new police recruits – they weren’t subtracting those police who in the same period retired or those who left the force for other reasons. Lies in both tree and police numbers.

If Hong Kong is an indivisible part of China, surely the gross interference in China’s internal affairs would be to have a separate extradition treaty with Hong Kong in the first place?

It’s very good news that the media haven’t really reported on. He also points out that it is Trump that has caused this to happen. As a businessman he knows how to get things done, reaching out to the private sector, etc. What has Congress done to help fight the virus? Nothing. All they’ve done is hand out free money. Peter Williams (Magic Talk) seems to believe charging or requiring part payment for hotel detentions is against the New Zealand Bill of Rights, the right to freedom of movement.

But since such detention assumes you may not comply with medical requirements for two weeks until you are declared free of infection, does it not simply also deny your “right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law”?

Portland, Oregon, has had its 61st consecutive day of street protests.

Federal officers again used tear gas.

The City Council, run by Democrats, a week or so ago banned Portland police from working with the Federal agents.

Quick question:
Is there any ministerial portfolio with more direct ministerial discretion regarding operating decisions than Minister of Immigration?

That Minister seems to be the final word on any questionable immigration decisions.
There aren’t many Ministers with any direct power over the operations of their ministry like that.

It also means that weirdly, the Minister of Immigration must be held to a higher standard than everyone else because their portfolio is one where blackmail and bribery are a real risk due to the fact they have sole discretion on questionable applications.

You certainly don’t want a Minister that is cheating on their wife to have a role where someone could threaten him with telling his wife unless he used his ministerial discretion to their advantage.

    While I agree with you, MCos, it was Nathan Guy, the Minister of Internal Affairs in 2011, who approved Thiel’s citizenship application. Guy became Minister of Immigration following the 2011 General Election.

I guess that will be a few months from now because the law change to reduce MPs pay is still in the queue.

They are described as a full on response to a looming disaster, yet they fall well short of New Zealand’s Level 4 rules. e.g butchers, bakers, and liquor stores are all open. You can exercise with one other person of your choosing.

It kind of shows how over the top New Zealand was – esp. giving supermarkets a monopoly on all food provision.
