7 Kiwibuild houses in October

Labour promised in 2017 that by late 2020 they would be building over 850 Kiwibuild houses a month.

In October they built seven.

There are 435 Kiwibuild homes available to buy (October). Not very popular then even though there is apparently a shortage.

Then 916 Kiwibuild homes under construction. Developers won’t be worried because underwrite by, you guessed it, taxpayers.

      Sir Cullen is right. Times have changed WellingtonBFF. Today, it is enough for St Jacinda to have aspirations. She doesn’t have to follow through. Worldwide she is acclaimed although she has achieved little. In the leafy suburbs of NZ she is acclaimed. She doesn’t have to deliver because “at least she tried.”
      
      Ardern is a master at hype. She understands that, in politics, the stories told are often as important as the substance achieved. She repeats the same slogans and mantras incessantly… soon most believe. The media praise her but do not condemn her mistakes or failure to deliver. It doesn’t matter because “at least she tried.”
      
      This is the reality of politics in NZ today.

Yeah but watch them now accelerate all of their programmes.

The natural lag may take 6-9 ? months to disappear but their control of all the levers of power will soon see “progress”.

And “progress of the socialist kind we know will all be bad news.

Distributive political economics will prevail at great long term cost to our economy.

Productive effort and GDP improvement will be minimal, the long list of beneficiaries will grow and private enterprise will be slowly strangled.

    The unsold houses are not really surprising. When the state decides where and what will be built rather than an individual you end up with houses that no one wants. This is (one reason) why communism can never succeed.

      At the outset of Kiwibuild we were told expert advice had been sought on what and where. That worked well.
      
      And as at August 2020 – 205 Kiwibuild homes have been bought or underwritten by the taxpayer. $92 million. Many were multiple homes in developments. Thanks taxpayers, so kind.

  We love sporting success; but
  In equal measure we love failure and putting the boot in and telling them were they went wrong (as if we all know better).
  
  We like people to succeed (whatever that is?); but
  We don’t like tall poppies, we think they are arrogant and like to cut them down to size especially when they fail.
  
  We want politicians to deliver the world to us; but
  1. We want the other guy to pay for it;
  2. We have no idea whether the promise is deliverable or adds to the sum total of anything if delivered; and
  3. When it is not delivered, we consider it a breach of trust and will kick someone for it. This despite 1 & 2 above, that we didn’t need it, and we never checked how and if whatever was being delivered.
  
  That is your average Kiwi, and is it any wonder that nothing of any real value is delivered to meet a need, is to specification, is on time and is on budget?

Labour promised 400 Kiwibuild Houses in the Hutt Valley on land left vacant after the demolition of old, unsafe state houses by the end of 2020.

With 21 days to go, they’ve built none.

And the vacant land has been used for new state houses.

I’d be interested if anybody knows has Labour officially abandoned kiwibuild? It just seems to be going nowhere as DPF so clearly points out.

Are we going to get an actual housing policy that works? Or is it more tilting of the head, the nice smile, the “kindness”?

Dont get me wrong I like kindness as much as the next fellow. However is anyone in the electorate concerned about results? Will the media ask some hard questions on behalf of the homeless people? Where’s John Campbell when you need him?

If this was National you know Campbell would be in there boots and all. But because it’s lovely jacinda well just a smile and some empathy will do ?

  Problem isn’t just kiwibuild but the whole big new organisation Kainga Ora, of which kiwibuild is but a part.. I know of a few projects that are taking a ridiculous amount of time. Concept design done. Then a review, urban design reviews (numerous), financial reviews, stakeholder reviews, council engagement and on and on. Reviews after reviews. Talkshops. Forms to be filled in. Boxes to be checked. In the time they take to get from one design stage to the next, most private developers would already be breaking ground on civil works. From what i can gather, the new organisation is just a swamp of process over process – all very well meaning, but completely stopping progress. It’ll get worse now and progress will continue to be glacial. All the while it’s only taxpayer money eh? But no matter, loads of people involved, loads of meetings, aren’t they all so important. And the wait list increases. And Campbell is onto this and doing his ‘sleeping in cars’ reports. No? Must have missed that.

    It’s not taxpayer money being wasted on Kianga Ora’s kiwibuild because Labour has blown it all on handouts. It’s borrowed money that the taxpayer will pay for in decades to come. Incidentally is it me because I’ve noticed that when a government department is renamed in Te Reo it operational ability becomes a farce or is it because of Labour government lack of direction, low ability of new PC appointees, and lack of accountability?

As SCS repeats and repeats and repeats the sheeple/middle don’t care about facts. They don’t care about unpleasant truths. The don’t care about warning signs of economic hardship. They don’t care about incompetence. They don’t care about anything other than the cult of little Aotearoa.

The narrative has been fed and accepted hook, line and sinker. Our savior single handedly saved NZ from the second coming of the bubonic plague. We are the world’s best at everything. This is reinforced by the media on a daily basis.
Unfortunately this has been assisted by a false sense of financial security due to unsustainable increasing landed asset values. The scary reality is the Blairite could sacrifice Neve Te Awamutu in the middle of Lampton Quay and the great unwashed would cheer her on.

Facts don’t matter. This is now a waiting game where patience is a virtue. It will come unstuck but lord knows when. For all of you like me that have taken the red pill and not the blue we need to suck it up and batten down the hatches. We ain’t even close to midnight let alone the next morning.

Little Aotearoa is in full swing.

This to me then suggests a few things at play.

We as a nation don’t believe the “housing crisis” is in fact a crisis, or that it doesn’t matter enough – we clearly didn’t vote based on delivery. If I told a customer Id deliver 850 widgets in November and I delivered 7 – well, we all know how that would go.

Equality of opportunity isn’t a factor – we want and like the idea of “fairness” (nope, don’t look to me for a definition) more than we want people to work hard. Which to me suggests weve got really lazy, both physically and intellectually.

And the kicker – $125M buys you a shit lot of silence.

Our Dave’s arrows flew true aimed as they were at the Speakers disgraceful behavior in the first instance and his attempt (abortive) to massage-manage the media with the public announcement of his humbling (though no doubt far from contrite) false rape incident apology.

An affair-incident which by the way seems to have cost a long-serving public servant both his reputation and his career.

Bullies everywhere need to be fronted. Mallard is a renowned unreconstructed bully, just watch him presiding.

He has form as a punchy aggressive opinionated bovver boy.

These are the very WORST credentials for a Speaker of the H of R.

In the face of DS’s kool confrontation, Mallard looked angry/discombobulated/pissed/frowny/uncomfortable and barely able to conceal his rage at the sheer effrontery of it all.

His patently stage managed MO had been called for what it is … manipulation and cynical misuse of his priviliged position in the House.

Mallard could in time prove to be a liability for Labour particularly if Act/Nats coordinated attacks are kept up. They should be.

I think we need to consider this from more of a glass half full perspective.

For starters, that’s 7 more Kiwibuild houses than National have built in the same time. That, in percentage terms, is an infinitely superior performance, and Jacinda can rightly give herself, and anyone else in arms reach, a congratulatory hug.

Second, to the best of my knowledge, no-one building these houses was killed by military style semi automatic assault weapons – clear evidence that the buy back scheme has been resoundingly successful, and consequently Stuart Nash can expect to be added to the hugging list.

Thirdly, this has all been done WITHOUT a covid vaccine – further proof that our government was right to ensure we were at the bottom of the priority list for the vaccine. That’s real foresight on their part, and probably justifies a 24 hour team hugathon.

Fourthly, and I won’t say finally because there are a myriad of other positives we can take from this, it lays to rest the ugly rumour that this is a government who doesn’t deliver. Many of those who spend their day on this blog grossly and unfairly maligning our government will themselves have not built 7 houses in October. Some will have built only 2 or 3, and many will have likely built none at all. These naysayers should hang their heads in shame and expect no hugs at all.

  Interesting but you miss one point. Apart from state houses it’s not the government job to build houses. It’s the governments job to create or change restrictive laws thus creating an environment that makes it easier and less costly for the private sector to build what would then be more affordable houses for all. This socialist Labour government isn’t capable of that kind of thinking, let alone doing anything without employing think-fests to do their thinking for them. Even when these task forces come up with suggestions Adern and co aren’t capable of putting them into action.

The worst thing about this being yet another example of Labour’s incompetence, is that it’s just become an accepted part of who they are.

People are so used to hearing they’ve failed to do yet another thing, that none of it is a surprise anymore, and so, no one cares.

We’re stuck with these idiots because the masses don’t care about their uselessness.

It just doesn’t matter. Asd I’ve said before, Cindy is the Bridget Jones politician and is not measured by success or failure.

Indeed, picking on her failures is quite likely going to have the opposite reaction of making people rally around her and support her.

I think the campaign DPF ran showing Labour screw ups likely gained her votes.

Even pointing out the incompetence of the people around her boosts her position. Poor Cindy has to deal with all those numpties around her – aww come on let’s do what we can to help her.

If National want to get back in the game then they need to offer something better. Pointing out Cindy’s failures does not help.

Come on, David. I’m becoming more and more concerned at your continuous attacks on the Government from completely the wrong direction.

WE DON’T WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO BUILD ANY HOUSES. We want them to have the sense to get out of the way of actual house builders who know how to do it, and who could be doing it at scale, more efficiently and to a higher standard, if the Government would instead focus on tackling the regulatory regime which makes it illegal to build an affordable house and almost impossible to build even an unaffordable house.

That is the message we should be getting. Complaining instead that Government should be doing more to provide what the private sector is perfectly capable of providing if allowed, is the sort of thing we expect and get from the Greens.

Minister Woods now focusing on vacant homes (NBR headline today, paywalled). For sure that will be laser focus on those Kiwibuild places available to buy and under construction. Right?

Kāinga Ora paid 130 of its 1,975 staff more than $180,000 each in annual salaries for the year to June, putting them in government’s newly amended top tax bracket, while the number of public houses it delivered fell 41 percent to a net 727 from last year.
The housing crown agency’s pipeline of development work also fell, from 294 last year to 264.
Chief executive Andrew McKenzie, whose take home pay was more than $830,000 and is the second highest-paid public servant after Accident Compensation Corp boss Scott Pickering, cited the impacts of covid on the reduced build numbers.
The agency is now facing an uphill battle to get to its targeted 4,480 public housing units by 2023.

Andrew Mc Kenzie has form. As the CFO of Auckland (City) Council he staged a hit and run when things turned out to be too tough for him.

He also was naturally attracted to a cozy post in the civil service that “paid well” .

Didn’t that go well for him.

A troughing chancer with little to show on his CV as a performer.

On a performance based pay scale he would now be struggling to pay his mortgage,
