  It is quite amusing to do a percentage analysis of ad/print (cannot refer to as news), they cannot be anywhere near a financially acceptable level.

        Let’s face it, the hot issues that were released to the public 5 minutes before stumps were pulled before Christmas have faded into insignificance already in the minds of the vast proportion of people.
        We are being played by experts, and the soothing words “this will be a Government for all New Zealanders” ring as hollow now as they did when uttered.

    In that Spinoff article, Pattrick says only two things can beat the housing crisis, ” and one of them is not a capital gains tax.”
    
    He reckons on building a “lot more” affordable houses, together with a parcel of:
    
    – Rent control;
    – Higher borrowing thresholds for investors;
    – Tough enforcement of minimum housing standards;
    – Tighter regulation of property managers; and
    – Improved renter rights.
    
    An efficient capital gains tax, as applied in most developed countries, would be far simpler. Nothing wrong with a capital gains tax provided other taxes are adjusted to keep total taxes in check.

        Perhaps, perhaps not. But it just might encourage investment into sectors of the economy that don’t add to the hardship experienced by the less well off. And perhaps those sectors now better financed might improve productivity and employment and yield more income to their owners, workers and society. Ooops. Silly me. This is kiwi blog where for most the ‘right’ to untaxed capital gain and a blind eye to the hardship of the poor is sacred.

        Of “efficient” taxes, Alan W., it would be hard to beat death duties, also called estate duties. These are the ultimate capital gains tax.
        
        Not that I think we should have them, nor that I think they are fair, especially on family businesses.
        
        They are, however, “efficient” from the State’s point of view: easy to collect, difficult to dodge, easy to administer, and without annual returns from the ultimate taxpayer to be processed.
        
        One hit, and the target is beyond arguing about the details.

  The Ardern brand is not the same as the Labour brand.
  
  Ardern is not measured by success of policies, just if she says the right things and looks as if she cares and is trying.
  
  When their is a Labour failure it is not an Ardern failure. Instead it is Labour letting Ardern down and all the luvvies rally around and support her.

    I’m not so convinced – if you look at the NZ sub on Reddit (they are all very much left wing and they HATE National) they are starting to turn on Adern for her inability to walk the talk. A lot of them are millennials and the lack of affordable housing is probably their number one concern – Labour and Adern simply have nothing to offer them here.
    
    That’s not to say they’ll all start turning to National but my pick is we might start seeing a rise in the polls for TOP and more support for the Greens which will mostly be taken from the Labour vote.

  Incitement to riot by Kamala, Pelosi & Pressley is far easier to prove. They incited 40 times as many murders and about 500 times as much property damage.
  Over the years, left-wing rioters have stormed the Wisconsin state capitol (2011) and a United States Senate building (2018) during the Kavanaugh hearings, in addition to 600+ riots last summer. We were told that this is the only way people who feel oppressed can be heard. We were told that this is justice. We were told that this is how democracy works.
  Apparently a few of the 250,000 people who were at the Capitol on Wednesday were listening.

Do NZ laws apply to Twitter and Facebook or can a bunch of SJW dweebs out of a failed city like San Francisco dictate in a major part in how our government communicates?

Or to be correct Twitter following orders from the Dems to shut down a political opponent.

Facebook for e.g must be able to ban Maori’s from its platform. Its a private company right?

Can twitter, face book & Apple phones, on instruction from US government, can in part close down NZ government in the future if there is another NZ nuke free moment. Is this acceptable?

    I don’t see what the problem is tbh. We’re not required to use Twitter, and Twitter is not required to entertain us. Private citizens, private company, etc.
    
    Ditto for Apple, Google and Parler.
    
    Ditto for all those companies reviewing their PAC contributions.
    
    The absence of regulation compelling private companies to follow the government’s bidding is quite refreshing.

      And besides — news papers, radio and tv are private – are you suggesting we become a one party state and nothing is to be disseminated?
      
      But yes I do support cutting the level of government department involvement in newspapers, tv and radio as in NZ between the central and local governments nearly every page of every paper every day has announcements and what not that are really nothing more than propaganda – as departments have little or no market competition.       The four Big Tech companies should not be in a position to decide who and who does not get a voice in the public square debate, based solely on their political ideology. It’s not merely social media platforms either – “de-platforming” will evolve to encompass denying people access to bank accounts, obtaining a loan, using Uber, using payment processors, registering a website etc. (a la the CCP’s social credit system).

        The government should compel private companies what to publish and not to publish? That sounds a lot more dystopian than the status quo. How would that work even? Sounds like a scheme to lower unemployment by having the chief censor hire hundreds of thousands of content moderators.
        
        For the record, Facebook and Twitter have been censoring content since long before Trump, and they both have published rules, nothing to do with political ideology (but would it matter if they did?). They’ve been rather restrained until the latest violence.

        They are already subject to legal action for their content; the point is that it’s not a government censor that unilaterally regulates this, it is the courts and other private parties.
        
        Section 230 is not protection for private companies in the sense that you think. It actually enables anonymous free expression on blogs just like this one.
        
        I have seen the alternative in another country and it is not good. What happens when the government decides to regulate Internet speech? The content providers cover their asses, that’s what happens. Technology evolves in a different direction. They will hand over the street address and GPS coordinates of the political blog commenter to the nearest police car faster than you can say “what about my rights!”.
        
        During the time I lived in Singapore, a pair of blog commenters were charged with sedition because of some anti-muslim comments made on a discussion thread. How chilling is that?

IMO his last act worth mentioning had to do with slandering a Public Servant and participating in a sham of an investigation into what he actually did.         New Zealand should not mirror Australia and the US on China. First, it is not in our economic interest to do so. Second, we should not be rushing headlong into a new Cold War, as they wish to do.
        We opted out of that in the 1980’s (I imagine you were opposed to the government position at the time) and we should do so again. Bolger understood that the nuclear free policy was a fixed position in NZ. The same applies today.

  The supplier was hacked. It doesn’t say how that happened. Could be anything from a zeroday to a spearphishing attack. But they should have only uploaded encrypted data to the file sharing site. personally I wouldn’t use any third party file sharing service for sensitive data. This includes the likes of dropbox, MS one drive, gdrive etc. If you really need to do it it then much better to use an open source solution like nextcloud running on your own servers with geoblocking and the like.

The insurance spokesperson was being rather disingenious when he said “However, in general terms, if a person’s actions cause an accident which results in damage to another person’s property, they may be liable for the cost of that damage.”
He omitted the word ‘negligent’ – if there is no negligence there is liability and that is that. This is the typical disingenuity from insurance companies that I have had to contend with in my former job where we regularly claimed from those who knocked power poles over or hit underground power cables with diggers etc.
In this case the only evidence of ‘negligence’ seemed to be a police report where the girl said she had not looked both ways and that ‘evidence’ would have been unreliable.
So IAG after months of harassing the girl dropped the case either partly because the Disputes Tribulal may have chucked it out and partly because the ensuing publicity was becoming harmful. IAG should have thought through this to start with, but some minions remains pig headed until the game is up. Presumably if IAG had found in favour of the insurance company, IAG would have
There is a general ‘risk’ problem here. How many people have insurance cover for such risks when not driving a vehicle, not being an employee, etc.? The girl was sued for $2600, which is generally not the end of the world. Suppose she was hit by a Porche and the damage to the Porche was $26000? This sort of thing has not been much of an issue in the past because common sense has generally prevailed (even if belatedly), so there has been no pressing need for law reform in this area.

  The car insurance should cover costs, so long as the pedestrian didn’t intentionally jump in front of the car. I seriously doubt she did.
  
  There was a girl killed by a truck here a while back, i wonder if the truck’s insurance company chased her family for costs?

    It’s odious but it was most likely the insurance company requiring its policyholder to take action.
    
    The exact same thing happened to me – long story short I was in an accident caused by another driver, which he admitted, and I had a witness. Within 36 hours there was a letter on my desk from his insurer stating that they understood I was in an accident with their client and that I had admitted liability!
    
    My insurer said not to worry, they would take care of it, my claim was accepted and I wouldn’t have to pay an excess. Some months later I received a notice of claim from the Small Claims Tribunal which he had been instructed to take by his insurer, and which my insurer required me to defend (unless I wanted to pay his insurance, and excess, which I didn’t).
    
    I filed a notice of defence or whatever it was and said I would appear to contest it, and 2 days before the claim was due to be heard they dropped it without telling me.
    
    They just try it on to see if you can be bothered contesting it – if not then you’re stuck. I didn’t take it personally, and neither should she. By all accounts she did cause the accident and IMO she’s lucky they called it off. Whether she was negligent or not is completely immaterial.

Sixty times judges have sat down and given the Trump team the opportunity to present evidence of vote-fraud. And every time they have failed to present any.

At this point claims of vote-fraud are in the same category as Bigfoot or Russell’s Teapot. OK, sure, you can’t 100% definitively disprove they exist, since it’s impossible to prove a negative. But given how closely this election has been scrutinized, and how hard the Trump team has searched for evidence of vote-fraud without finding any, continuing to believe there was significant vote-fraud is (at best) irrational.

Trump-supporters need to get with reality. There was no vote-fraud. Biden won, fair and square.

  If there really was no fraud what could count as evidence to the contrary? Many posts on this site have pointed out the potential problems with the Presidential election in more depth & detail than I could.
  
  To roughly summarise, the White House showed 100s of signed affidavits citing questionable behaviour among election workers in various counties, videos of unexplained incidents at the counting offices, banned observers, & live interviews on TV of those brave enough to speak out. Plus there were dead voters, interstate voters, unqualified voters, decisions made by officials violating State constitutions, odd cumulative vote count patterns & enough statistical anomalies to generate suspicion under normal circumstances.
  
  Given the narrowness of margins in the key States it is no wonder many voters are still asking for a detailed independent audit. And, since the Biden result will stand regardless, what is there to fear?
  
  As for the Courts rejecting submissions, contrary to the rules & Constitution, one explanation is the risk to them, their family & careers, plus lasting infamy for ruling against a proclaimed election result. The media & political pressure was almost impossible to resist.
  
  Is there anything more dangerous to a Democracy than a large proportion of the voting population losing trust in a national election? Whether anyone likes it or not, and no matter how they denigrate those questioning the outcome, that is what we now see in the USA. What is needed now is not blank denial, but acceptance of the problems followed by making changes to the election process to ensure this never happens again. I wont hold my breath.

  You’re wrong on many points there. For a start, many cases were dismissed without the evidence even being looked at – infamously, the Texas lawsuit where the Court claimed Texas didn’t have “standing” (which, of course, they did).
  
  For a second point, you are confusing criminal with civil cases. There does not need to be evidence for a civil case to be heard. When you file a civil complaint you need a reasonable basis in fact and law. Allegations can be made on information and belief. Then the court grants discovery to find evidence. That’s the way it works. You don’t have evidence in advance of an investigation. And the bar is very low. More than sufficient to establish a reasonable basis to file a complaint to overcome dismissal. But the courts don’t want to look.

Both India & Australia had miserable days at the SCG yesterday. India due to injuries and our cousins over the ditch due to three dropped catches by Paine, witless chatter to the batsman as he was about to face up, causing him to walk away, several times, by Paine, scuffing out the batsman’s guard by Steve Smith, Cricketer of the Decade.
In the end the fast bowling ogres of the Land of Oz couldn’t knock over a couple of cripples who held on for about fifty overs for a draw.
Last year Oz thrashed us and we thrashed a perfectly healthy India.

When you are 14, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday with 22 million people killed. Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until you are 20. When you’re 29, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, global GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy. When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet.
When you’re 41, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills six million. At 52, the Korean War starts and five million perish.

Conflict Resolution Studies 101 is about trying to take the all-important step into someone else’s shoes. Without that, everything remains unresolved. To constantly remain stuck in believing your side knows all, is right, and good, and noble is to remain uncommitted to solving the problem.

Do you honestly believe President Joe Biden will single-handedly or symbolically be able to heal the Grand Canyon-sized rift? It’s going to take a massive haemorrhoid-inducing effort by the citizenry to bring the country back to some semblance of togetherness. But they have to want it. They have to want relief. They have to want to be good winners too.

My belief is strong on this. Until the American left – including media, academia and cultural institutions – start at least attempting in good faith to get a handle on the history, the frustrations, and the culture of their ‘enemies’, things will only worsen unimaginably.

Gotta say it’s been a hell of a year, found myself agreeing with a hell of a lot of people I normally wouldn’t agree with and vice versa.?

I woke at 5am last Thursday to watch the protest at Washington Monument. Trump tweeted that he would be speaking at 11 am. He was super late to speak – maybe 40 minutes?
I watched the speech & was also on twitter. As trump was finishing his speech, I saw tweets from an independent journalist that people were invading the capitol. The capitol is a 30 minute walk from Washington Monument.
I can confirm these details from newsmax are correct-

12:40 pm – 1st protesters arrive at Capitol
1pm – Capitol PD Chief sees Officers attacked
1:09 pm Capitol PD Chief requests National Guard
1:11 pm Trump speech concludes

Remember Capitol & Monument are a 30 minute walk away.
SO how did Trump cause this? Why was he 30 minutes late for his speech? Looks like the work of ANTIFA? Also why werent ANTIFA at the protest? They were saying all over twitter they were coming. Not hard to dress in Trump supporter clothes & impersonate them…

      Soz that I offended you … but I always remember that ‘The Don’ got deferral on Vietnam War service becuase of ‘bone spurs’, something that doesn’t seem to have troubled him since … and certainly not on his many-hundreded visits to a golf course as Pres.
      
      Hope we can agree to disagree, heh.

I see the ugly Australians are at it again – didn’t take very long for the “new culture” to wear off and the mongrels to revert to type.

Referring to their cricket side, captained by the worst wicket-keeper (and, by all accounts, the worst sledger) of all time, Tim Paine who sledged the Indians batting to save (or win) the third test.

He not only used a tired old line first tried against Virat Kohli years ago (“at least my team-mates like me, dickhead”) against Ravi Ashwin, he then proceeded to drop 3 catches behind the wicket – one of them poached of first slip who would almost certainly have caught it.

And this is the Captain who was wheeled out when the last one – Steve Smith – was banned for cheating. The same Steve Smith who went out in the break and scuffed up the marks of the Indian batsmen to make it harder for them to settle after the break. He had one job – remove the ugly Australian tag – and he’s made it worse. Muppets the lot of them.

  Some retard must own a loft close to us. The stinking things have been coming here shitting all over the copper roof on our conservatory. Sets as hard as a rock and almost impossible to remove….even with oven cleaner and a paint scrapper.
