    If any of the amateur users gave it a moments’ thought they’d drop it like a dirty cloth nappy.
    
    Masks are for trained professionals in limited and time sensitive applications like surgery etc and used in conjunction with other hygiene practises such as rigorous hand washing , gloves and other PPE….and thrown away quickly after said operation.
    
    When you wear a mask as a civvie all day long it ‘ll get soaking wet over time and you’ll keep pawing it thus transferring all that goup from hand to surface etc surfaces that other folk will be pawing on busses , trains etc

    There could be any number of reasons they chose to leave:
    
    (1) Realised MIQ was run run by Basil Fawlty and that put them off staying.
    
    (2) Saw the infections in MIQ and realised NZ was not the stellar Covid-19 eliminator they thought it was.
    
    (3) Were concerned about rumours of another lockdown?
    
    (4) Realised from the internal media that NZ was a poorly run socialist country, quite different from the media hype external to NZ.
    
    Have you ever checked into a hotel or restaurant and observed the poor level of service or in the hotel case the queue of people complaining about unwashed bed linen or bed bugs? And then decided to go elsewhere?
    
    I have colleagues overseas we do business with and the view painted in international media is quite different to what we see here. Between that and the realisation you are spending 14 days in Managed Incubation Quarters would no doubt put some people off.

  I expect there was intervention by the government in that time.

      As a Kiwi, I came in last October. The system was a shambles(hotel on the other hand was brilliant). Have just cleared IMQ in Cambodia.
      nz could learn a lot from these guys.
      Not Cambodian. Deposit $2000 usd on arrival. Cash or credit card. Swabbed then on to bus to miq hotel 4 or 5 star. From disembarking to bus about 30 minutes
      
      Cambodians dont pay but are put in accomodation. Usually converted schools or military style accomodation.

      (2) implies that thinking someone to be black would be a lower opinion than not thinking them to be black

    Crew all have valid STCW training which is a requirement.
    The whole crew should of been cleared in with the vessel.
    Visas are issued on arrival for whole crew as “right of free passage”
    The vessel before departing would of informed its next port of call.
    Its NOT correct to say they only applied for visas before deoarture.
    The whole ship is issued inwards clearence, not the crew.
    Unless its registered as a “Private YVessel” which i doubt.

      One possibility as far as i can see is that on crew list they had passengers onboard pre arrival.
      IE not all crew.
      You submit crew list and passenger (PAX) list pre arrival.
      That could well of been the case.
      Then excess PAX will not be STCW certified and PAX will need to be cleared in.
      Hence right of entry denied.
      Sounds like someone didnt do there homework.
      However if no PAX onboard, Vessel ( and crew) should be cleared in.
      Same as any commercial ship.
      Something does’nt add up here?

        ‘Laperouse’ is owned by Ponant which is a French cruiseline and as I understand it is owned by a consortium of major European companies. They operate about ten small modern and upmarket cruise ships carrying 160-260 passengers. It is a very professional organisation and I cannot imagine for a minute that they would have filed incorrect documentation.
        
        This reeks of political interference of the worst order and I hope that the local charterers have enough clout to get this decision by Faafoi overturned. Given that there are some 700 Kiwi passengers booked and paid for there will be enough business to keep our legal fraternity busy for some time.

        Was the vessel sub chartered by NZ company? Im guessing it was and its them that has’nt done their correct paperwork.
        Be interesting to see the “charter party” , Terms off Hire.
        If that’s the case the ship owners will get paid.
        Theres only a few exceptions, “Force Majure” being the only defense etc.

  If the EU prevents the export to NZ of vaccines that NZ has contracted and paid for (and that is not clear from the article) – that will be reprehensible of them, and they can expect worldwide condemnation for that action. I cannot see that any reasonable person could blame the NZ Government for it.
  
  On the contrary, it will reinforce the wisdom of the NZ Government’s approach of ordering from several different sources so as to be sure of getting supplies even if something goes wrong with one of the arrangements.
  
  Please folks – We cannot accuse others of “(whoever) Derangement Syndrome”, and then do the same ourselves by holding events and circumstances to be Jacinda’s fault when, as in this case, they quite clearly aren’t. There are more than enough problems that are clearly down to her incompetence, we don’t need to invent others.

If the the government keeps no records of people after leaving Quarantine, how do they send them a Bill.
Here is a hint.
You could flag the passport for date free to travel, then collect fee as they exit if it is before that date.
But I guess that would to difficult to administer.

The end of January 2021. The highlight of the month, for me, were the four parts by Kiwi In America on the first four days of this month. Each was a meticulous study in the perfidy of American electoral law written by a man who has a huge knowledge of New Zealand’s electoral law and processes. The four parts were lengthy, indeed so lengthy that I think they were beyond the attention span of many readers. So lengthy that I needed to read each of them twice to fully comprehend the seriousness of the matter at hand. I hope Kiwi In America will make further contributions later this year. His erudition is informative. It is a pity that so many readers roundly criticised him in a vehement manner.
Many thanks to Kiwiblog for bringing Kiwi In America’s posts to our attention.

I’m all for vaccines but not at all keen on a ‘jab’. Why does the media persist with this off-putting word?
It’s like whenever there’s a story on TV about inoculating kids they show a picture of a sharp needle going into a little soft arm – and tears too.
A more responsible – and literate – media would be more careful about their words and images, especially when our health is at risk.

Master Mariner and I had an interesting ex change about -80s yesterday/this morning.

Thought I might supply a useless fun fact for the day (later)…

When retrieving samples from -80s we sometimes forget to put the thermal gloves on. We teach our trainees two things:

1: if the item sticks to your hand DO NOT pull away, you’ll strip the skin. Press into the contact to melt the ice <– nobody ever gets it right the first time, because instinctively you feel the freeze and want to pull back, everybody gets it right *if* there's ever a second time.

2: if you "accidentally" forgot the thermal gloves, or are required to be in the -80 for a long time with thermal gloves, when you go to warm up your hands run them under the cold tap. Never, ever use warm or hot water to "defrost" your hands. <– you can tel if anybody forgets this, the pain is enormous.

Why am I rabbiting on about this: because I sincerely hope the hospital/public health staff are getting these messages and correct training when encountering these. If you're reading this and you know anybody that will need to work with these freezers, let them know. It is not trivial. FWIW I also have a -140 and anybody "forgetting" thermal gloves in that thing lives to regret it from their own health/safety point of view, and then by the dressing down they subsequently get from me. (Also the H&S incident reports are really long).

  when I was in Greenland for a while we had a similar problem although the temp was only about minus 25. If you got stuck to metal our plan was get your mates to stand round and pee on your hands,the only one who needed this was the expedition doctor who advised us on this plan.

        The plastic thing is a real problem… as PBs lose their habitat they’re getting closer and closer to settlements (here in Canada and Russia too). They’re also not getting enough seal to eat and increasingly predating seabirds, and eating rubbish from the village dumps, it’s making them sick.   Totally biased report from RNZ’s Colin Peacock, first he didn’t play the lead up to the callers call in which John Banks sounded distracted and wasn’t paying total attention (he played only the very end part in which Banks finally joined in to end the call by cracking a joke, which would be classed by the Left as “casual racism”).
  
  Then later Colin Peacock continuously put the boot into John Bank’s character by using “casual smears” (e.g. not explaining John Bank’s had been undone previously by some unsavory lies from the likes of a well known “criminal over-stayer”).
  
  CP did however play the parts later in Bank’s show when he finally “clicked” to what the caller had said, and Banks apologised by stating the callers views were wrong and were racist. (Although in playing these pieces it allowed CP to play more angry caller responses and it looks like Banks’s apologies were largely disregarded).
  
  Interestingly the what brought this all up was the totally inappropriate way Maori activists and their enablers forced a civil servant out of their job (Oranga Tamariki’s Grainne Moss). Looks like “we” are not allowed to talk about … and perhaps the “woke” enjoy being “slaves” to the radicals and the thugs!
  
  So there we have it, the leftist media have proved yet again they are no longer doing their jobs as they are not looking at both sides of the story (just the prevailing woke narratives).
  
  And frankly what’s really sad about all this is, rather than “cancel” a person’s views (because they don’t suit the woke narrative) it could have been a perfect opportunity to have Mediaworks bring onto the programme the next day to guest with John Banks for an hour or two, an expert from Māoridom talking about “casual racism” and the wider Oranga Tamariki issue etc.
  
  That would allow the listeners some informed discussion and debate covering both sides, after all isn’t it said (particularly by the left) that dialogue is always best?
  
  In fact, the “woke cancelling” response is an insult to MagicTalk’s listeners both Pākehā and Māori because there are many Māori callers that I hear that are actually open minded and are willing to take various views into account.
  
  Ironically these listeners (Pākehā and Māori) are more tolerant and open to discussion of dissenting views than the “woke wankeratti” who “cancel” others, get outraged on Twitter and the Spinoff and make radio podcasts about it!

  Going to be very hard for farming as well. Are we going g to bring back Clydesdales? I love them, but there is a reason tractors very quickly took over.
  Since we can’t use coal, even steam engines are out.
  We will need to greatly reduce the country’s population, since with manual methods, yields will be well down and famine might bea thing. It will solve obesity and unemployment, o a owork, no eat basis since we won’t be able to afford welfare any more.

Wish McKechnie had done more than just throw his bat on the ground.

He should have walked up to Chappell with bat in hand and prodded it in his face.

Think many Aussies would have supported him.

Well found not everyone is unhappy Queenstown has shed half of its tourism. The town was simply bursting at the seams with visitors and alien drivers were often dangerously unskilled. Those operators who made imported tourists their main source of income were badly hit, and rhat includes hotels. In the evenings hardy a light can be seen in many rooms and some have closed their doors. The iniquitous covid had a good side effect.

  Incredible, people voted last election to keep the Greens and their loonie policies OUT of power … has Labour forgotten this already? If so expect this to be Labour’s last term in power.
  
  National and ACT need to call this out and say NO to ridiculous “no gas by …” BS (in fact they should be encouraging more conversions to gas etc).
  
  We also need to keep the Tiwai aluminium smelter – the world’s purest and eco-friendly-produced aluminium and foreign exchange export earner etc.
  
  Also where are the Treasury figures? Does Jacindy have a clue?

required by the legislation, we will review whether these should be included in the 2050 target in
2024. We have tested to make sure that our path could allow Aotearoa to meet the 2050 net zero
long-lived gas emissions target including international aviation and shipping emissions in case a
decision is made in future to include these in the 2050 target.”
