    The port of Darwin is currently leased to the Chinese. However, the state of Victoria has signed up to the Chinese Belt and Road programme. AFIK, both state’s actions are currently being challenged by Aust’s Federal Govt.

  This makes my blood boil, the number of people who have been told they can’t go overseas to see a dying relative because they will not get a spot in MIQ on their return is quite large so I fail to see how or why an MP gets special treatment unless it is a desire to rub our noses in the fact he can get a spot. I am no longer being charitable to the political class because they are constantly moving the goal posts on us but it never seems to affect them.
  News Flash MP’s you come from us, are one of us, rule by our consent and no matter how much you think you are you are NOT royalty.

  Remember we are considered as Key workers by Maritime NZ and UN IMO.
  Then this clown waltzes in and out of country willy F##%%n Nilly
  Its beyond belief in fact, And then had the gumption to apply for Emg Visa?
  Well he bloody well got one from MIQ and voucher when all fully booked.
  If thats not special treatment then what the bloody hell is?
  
  Meanwhile professional and moral obligations keeping supply chains running working , Without the support of NZ officials.

    Thank you Master Mariner for your professionalism and for keeping NZ supplied. The government needs to recognise you guys and sort out a solution – your situation is clearly extremely mentally challenging (if not downright depressing or worse).
    
    What are the maritime unions doing about this? I would have thought they would have the (Labour) govts ear?
    
    To clarify, is that 100 NZ’ers stuck onboard worldwide (for months and months), not 100 from all countries right (as there must be thousands in that category)?

      Air NZ still have Flights direct to China. China flexing muscles on banning NZ seafood.
      Then if you follow my comments on Air NZ and Saudi issue, there is every reason for example , China to Audit and decline Flights there.
      
      Of note, in Myanmar and port call delayed again due to Coup, However China a week before Coup happened sent major delegation to Myanmar.
      Protests outside all Chinese embasies everywhere by Burmese.
      Join the dots.
      Currently recieving excellent safety/security via Dfat Aus, Feet on the ground.
      I would’nt take any advice coming from DIA or Mfat in NZ.

      Best estimate 500,000 seafarers overdue. Some going on 2 years onboard.
      plenty suicides and like you say mental health issues.
      Last tour I mentioned before crew members wife died leaving no one to look after 3 young kids.
      We however found a solution without going into detail.
      Also a medevac case, which adds to the stress which should of been a normal routine job

    Obviously you understand nothing about how a corporate of that scale is run.
    
    AirNZ revenue, at the time was around 5.5 billion. There are layers of managment, each with generally different limits of spending and contracting abilities that do not need to be notified to a higher level.
    
    In all likelihood the CEO at the time, Chris Luxon would never have been informed of a piddly contract running over 3 years (signed in 2019 around the time left), that delivered to them perhaps 1 million dollars per year.
    
    I work with people that have 10s of millions of dollars of budget to spend and contract, and they have no CEO oversight for these sums.
    
    If you are thinking that some lower level manager is going to rush to Chris Luxon to get a 1 million per year maintenance contract looked over you are dreaming, and then of course it was from a third party. So, are you going to investigate every third party to see who their customers are and who owns the equipment that they might send you.
    
    Probably a good way to waste a CEOs time though.

      NZ Government is Majority shareholder here. Is Air NZ is in breach of any above “there” may be serious unintended consequences far more than if not Government owned.
      
      The CEO is “custodian” of Code of conduct,
      Which includes all Joint ventures and their Business dealings.
      
      I find it inexcusable he does not know.?
      Believe me when I say this will not be lost on others.

  I actually heard Susie Ferguson interview Ms Ghahraman on Morning Report and after some (what I thought were) some soft/leading questions initially (and to Ferguson’s credit she started to ramp them up) it became clear that Ghahraman is not actually a good speaker particularly on this issue and she came across as somewhat specious and unsure.
  
  Ferguson started to pull Ghahraman up after the third time Ghahraman said (Air NZ’s actions) were “breaking the law”. What law was being broken, Ferguson finally inquired? Ghahraman muttered vaguely about when countries commit war crimes (although I haven’t heard of SA being accused of warcrimes by the UN, but I am aware of MSM reporting for the last couple of years and the likes of NGO’s saying war crimes are being committed so I’ll give Ghahraman that one).
  
  The other interesting thing was Ghahraman on a couple of occasions kept mentioning the “contrast” of Chris Luxon’s responses compared to Greg Foran’s responses yesterday in Parliament. To be honest Ghahraman wasn’t making any sense or clarifying what the so called “contrast” was about (this is what I mean earlier by saying Ghahraman isn’t actually a good speaker when under (interview) pressure.
  
  I came away thinking perhaps Ghahraman means in contrast to Foran’s lack of being seen as transparent (and evading responsibility by blaming “juniors”) that perhaps she meant Chris Luxon actually gave good answers?
  
  In fact when I heard Chris Luxon being interviewed prior, I thought he handled the interview very well – no stumbling, no indecisiveness, just on message and on point. Well done that man!

  The real question,
  How complicit is the NZ government in allowing this to happen.
  All companies must have Code of Conduct.

  Just to be known I fully agree with business everywhere ( Saiudi) etc

  They cancelled her, not just from her job but publicly shamed her to ensure she doesn’t get another, for a post that was calling for tolerance of different views and greater acceptance of your neighbour. And the dangerous history of where intolerance of one group has lead in the past.
  
  She could have added in the witch hunts, mccarthyism and any other period where it started with a lack of tolerance for people with different views.
  
  Never mind. Next paragraph says she was a trump supporter. That explains it. Cancel her.

  Hollywood has fired every Left wing actor and Actress who have repeated false claims that Trump conspired with Russia to steal the last election.
  In a statement, they said that a very thorough two year investigation found zero evidence of this so it is only reasonable to reagrd it as false “it’s not as if we’re just relying on MSM “Fact Checkers”. The same action will also be used against anyone who claimed there was a Quid Pro Quo with Ukraine when the phone call the lie was based on had no such thing and claims that Trump incited the “attacks” on the Capitol even though his speech did no such thing.
  In a similar, earlier statement, they also announced that anyone who called Trump “Literally Hitler” has also been fired as they have minimalised the very real terror imposed on the Jewish people by Hitler and the Nazis.

I received the following response from my electorate MP in reply to mine about local body Maori wards:

‘I support the removal of the binding referenda as it required only 5% of the local constituency to oppose the inclusion of a Maori Ward within the local Authority and this is where the unfairness occurs. What will now happen is non-binding referenda, which allows the public to have their views heard, but does not disproportionately disadvantage Maori.’

Totally false to claim that 5% of the electorate petitioning for a referendum is unfair when 100% of the electorate then votes on whether to establish Maori wards or not. I told my MP that she clearly does not support the democratic process.

Ironically, she is a Maori who represents all her constituents be they Maori, NZ European, Indian, Asian or whatever and in spite of belonging to a party I do not support she is a good MP. She is a prime example of just why race based government representatives are unnecessary.

There is a large Auckland Transport bus passing along my street every 20 mins from early morning till late night. I have never seen more than one passenger on any bus at any time, ever. 99% of the journeys are with an empty bus. I presume someone uses this service at some point on the route.

Surely there must be a better way of managing this service at less cost to the ratepayer.

I see bus useage in Auckland fell significantly over the 2019 year before Covid. Do Phil and his team know what they are doing?

  One would hope, and expect, that the bus company would make a change to save money and resources. But why would they if they are getting paid to run the route and the timetable.
  
  Not to worry, it’s only ratepayer and taxpayer money, though about 11% is actually paid by actual passengers.

    It’s going to be interesting to see the uptake of seats on the Hamilton/Papakura train beginning April.
    This is a hugely expensive exercise and I don’t know anyone who is going to need to leave Hamilton at 6.30am – much less 5.45am – to get to Papakura, and return at the end of the day. At $12.20 a trip any regular commuter is going to be forking out $120 a week, which granted may work out cheaper than owning and driving a car (I have no clue about that) but Papakura is highly unlikely to be the ultimate destination of most.
    But maybe I missed the survey on how I’d use the service.

  In the St Lucia estuary in South Africa there are a lot of Zambezi sharks (aka Bull shark) and Nile crocs.
  
  They have big ding-dong battles with eachother and harass fishermen in small boats etc.

Stuff: “Collapse: Why the CTV tragedy is a blight on a city and a nation”

Oh, FFS, C’mon stuff, shit happens.

Sure in an ideal world we could see into the future and make different decisions and avoid all negative results, but that is not the way it is.

We constantly play off risk vs reward all the time. We eat food that might have been contaminated. We drive in cars and might be involved in crashes. We build buildings and sometimes they fall down.

We’re always assessing risk and reward. Sometimes we do that for ourselves and sometimes we get professionals to do it – be those bus drivers, engineers, computer programmers, doctors, lawyers, whatever.

Humans, and processes are imperfect (spot the number of spelling mistakes we see on Stuff, for instance). Engineers, individually and as a process, generally make very good decisions and are good at riding the risk/reward curve.

Sometimes the outcomes are not what we want, but we should recognise that as the cost for the benefits we get as a society.

If we always expect perfect outcomes then we’re screwed as a society. We’ve back to the era of driving cars at 4 miles per hour and increasing building costs by 10x. No planes. No fast food.

Just as we choose 100kph as the open road speed limit to get a “sweet spot” on the risk vs reward curve, we need to do the same with other areas of our lives too – including buildings and earthquake risk assessment.

While earthquakes freak people out, it is worth putting the risks in context. About 5 or 6 people per year are killed on average in NZ. That’s tiny. And every time there’s an earthquake, the older, shittier buildings are damaged and what is built is better. We’re wasting our time worrying about these risks.

Far bigger risks:
– the road toll that kills 300-odd a year.
– obesity which kills many thousands a year.

And before anyone starts any of that “You wouldn’t say that if…” nonsense, I knew two people that died in that incident.

    It is the insistence that someone must be held accountable that is broken itself.
    
    I will grant you that gross negligence should be pursued with vigour, however there should not be an expectation that someone is held accountable every time a disaster happens.
    
    There is a shortage of structural engineers and some of that is due to prospective engineers seeing how an engineer is being hounded and then deciding to rather pursue some other career with far less pressure.
    
    This is not just limited to engineering, but to any occupation where an error might have great negative consequences. This pressure is pushing out competent people from drivers and pilots to doctors, lawyers and engineers.
    
    One tiny mistake/error and your life is ruined.
    
    For example I know a person who is an extremely competent programmer who generates high quality software. He went for an interview with a company that makes safety critical software (air traffic control). He was asked how he felt about writing software that could kill people if it went wrong. He turned down the job offer.
    
    Now clearly we don’t want cowboys writing air traffic control software, but if air traffic control software kills someone then the programmer is only a tiny part of the process. It is easy to zoom in on the programmer that wrote the offending line of code, but that would be stupid. There are also testers that should have caught the problem, pilots that should have realised the software was giving poor advice, etc etc.
    
    And if we insist on perfection then we’re limiting how those resources can be deployed.
    
    Is it better for a programmer to spend 5x the time eliminating the last error (hence the ATC software costs 5x as much and your air ticket goes up $20) or is it better that they expend that extra time doing something else that benefits society?
    
    Nett result of the above is that the ATC software industry lost a highly competent programmer and hired someone else who probably is not as good.
    
    The same happens in all areas of responsibility from bus drivers to doctors.
    
    Imagine if “someone was held accountable” every time there was a spelling mistake on Stuff!

Blaming the design engineer for engine mounts that fail in an accident and ensure the engine goes under the car rather than invading the passenger space would be both unjust and foolishness
        
        I love the way people like politicians and arm chair experts who produce nothing and take no risks are quick to crucify those that do while being quick to take the credit for the success of the people who do.

    The CTV building successfully allowed all occupants to leave safely after the Charing Cross quake in September 2010.
    By February 2011 some Crats working for the Peoples republic of Christchurch had removed all restrictions for the CTV building to be used again and on the 22nd of that month the then weakened but certified as sound multi story building pancaked and suffered a subsequent fire, that was when 115 persons died.
    Afaik the original designer, builder and engineer had zero involvement in that disaster.
    To suggest otherwise pray tell us, how Harland and Wolff were responsible for the sinking of the Titanic??

  My take on the CCTV building collapse was that in the first earthquake the structure design proved to be earthquake resilient; i.e. (as with fire protection) the building design allows people to get out safely even if the building is damaged. After the first earthquake the building should have been written off; the engineers did not properly assess the structural weakness and allowed people back in. The weakened structure failed catastrophically in subsequent quakes.

    Fully agree! I recall media reports from people working in the CTV building (prior to the Feb 2011 earthquake & subsequent collapse) were concerned and worried. They were saying that the building (floors) were shaking whenever large trucks went past.
    
    At the time I thought, gee if that is the case (that concrete floors, that weigh probably hundreds of tons, were shaking/moving) then something isn’t right about this, structurally!
    
    So why didn’t the appropriate authorities take these concerns seriously and “red-tape” the building, as it was unsafe?
    
    (Granted, it would have been a “nightmare” for CTV to rip out heaps of TV equipment and wiring to move elsewhere (but is do-able), but there is no excuse for not moving the other tenants such as the language schools etc).
    
    As someone else said here a couple of years ago when this all came up again then, the building “did it’s job”, it held up after the first earthquake in 2010 in order for people to be safely evacuated, so it should have been condemned (ergo no deaths would have occurred at that later date).

  The design was deeply flawed. It was designed by someone with a fake engineering degree and approved by incompetent officials at the Council.
  
  Along with the PGC building, this was the only modern building in Christchurch that collapsed, killing scores of people. All the other deaths were a result of the facades of unreinforced masonary buildings collapsing and that was a long known risk that the Council had refused to deal with. None of the other hundreds of modern buildings in Christchurch collapsed. They may have been damaged beyond repair but they did the job and saved people.

From what I have seen so far coming from Washington it is likened to any good Gilbert and Sullivan show, many of which I have enjoyed over my long life.
What Opera is coming out from well rehearsed emotional glorification of the ridiculous kind in many cases.
Having worked in the USA many years ago they are delightful people but once they get warmed up they become totally obsessed emotionally. Many become more like their antecedents from southern Europe and Africa and the tears start and they will not be swayed to reduced the rhetoric often totally in coherent and difficult to understand at the time.

  Sadly you are right. Within my lifetime news has gone from being news to being largely opinion. News has always been subject to selection – editors choose which stories to run or not run etc – but over the last decade in particular, broadcasters have failed to provide neutral news and have instead opted for opinion. That means that they will be open to manipulation. The biggest means to do that is via financial influence. We are now seeing it with the manipulation of opinion by the hard woke left.
  
  The other major target in societal manipulation is via the education system. Universities are now so beholden on Government funding that they will bend to the will of Government and so hence the rise in all sorts of totally irrelevant but increasingly powerful departments such as Maori and Pacific studies. At the bottom end, we of course have the rewriting of NZ history to better reflect the bizarre beliefs of the political masters.

IMHO the Political Elites and the Corporate Elites have a single agenda. That is to control the thought and speech of the citizens.
It has many advantages for both. For the Political Elites it is so much easier to govern with the citizens will obey your every command and dictate. No messy opposition no having to endlessly explain and prove your self.
Just issue an order of the day and it is obeyed.

For the Corporate Elites its means more profits. You and your so called competitors set the market price and divvy up the market between you and the citizens buy your product or service.

This is where the West is headed with both Right and Left Political Elites on the same page.

Every now and then I will google the offenders and it is surprising how many of them have an active Facebook account. For a risk-free glimpse into the sordid, shitty way many, many New Zealanders lead their lives it is unbeatable.

I don’t have the answers – I just remark that we have a sizable proportion of people living lives saturated in drugs, violence, booze, criminality, beatings, warring with other groups, broken homes, multiple kids living in squalid conditions and heading exactly the same way as their parents – and the numbers are growing every year.

Compared to 1981 when Lester met his demise we have gone massively backwards.

For responsibility I point my accusing finger directly at successive governments who have brought in policies to reward families to break up, to reward people for indolence, to reward people to have multiple children they can’t look after; to implement policy after policy after policy which, with the best of ‘intentions’, has delivered this seething, sordid, murderous underclass we have today.

And then we have the champagne-swilling lefty-luvvie politicians telling us that even more such policies is the answer in between trips to international conferences and 7-week holidays ‘home’ to Tijuana.

Go on-line and have a look at stats for Maori educational attainment, single parenthood, welfare-dependence, employment levels, criminality etc in earlier times and compare them to today. All the stats have exploded, in the wrong direction, since the 70s.

The further back you go, Maori were more likely to be employed, more likely to be married, more likely for children to be in a two-parent household, more likely to have not experienced the criminal justice system, more likely not to be dependent on the state.

And the modern crop of politicians will lecture us that it is because of ‘systemic racism’. What like contrary to everything we instinctively know that racism has gotten worse over time, not better? That the effects of colonisation get worse the further away from it we become?

I say again, we are being openly lied to – and by the very people we pay to represent our interests.

If President Trump is charged for incitement because people stormed the capital after his impassioned speech, then will Bernie Sanders also be charged?

Bernie’s People’s Summit speech which he gave in June 2017 calling for revolution and calling Trump ” “the worst and most dangerous president in the history of our country.” , was followed two days later by one of his campaign volunteers, who defined himself “by his firm support of Bernie Sanders’ progressive politics — and his hatred of conservatives and President Donald Trump”, went to a republican softball match with a rifle and handgun and fired multiple rounds from the dugout injuring five.

The shooter had tweeted multiple hateful messages including “”Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.” he posted on his personal Facebook page on March 22.
“Republicans are the Taliban of the USA,” he posted in February.” “He had also joined several anti-GOP Facebook groups, including “Terminate The Republican Party;” “The Road to Hell Is Paved With Republicans;” and “Join The Resistance Worldwide!!”” Where were the facebook police then?

Not only wasn’t Bernie or the socialist movement blamed. In NZ I can’t even find any record of it being reported! Bernie wasn’t stopped from running in future elections. Bernie supporters and progressives as a whole weren’t labelled.

Apparently the first vaccines will arrive here next week. Enough for border workers and their families etc. Which is good news – not front of the line but at least they are coming now.

However, when we look around the world it is clear that North America and Europe is doing far worse than the so-called developing world. Take the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (pop. 200m ) with zero deaths for the last few days. The state have had 8,696 deaths which on a per million basis is far better than the UK or US.

So what’s the difference between India as well as other developing countries? The main thing appears that they treat people early – go hard and go early! There are a lot treatments that are working. The main one is ivermectin. I don’t understand why we aren’t using this. It is a wonderful drug that will bridge us to the vaccine. It now appears that the complete roll out of the vaccine will take 6-7 years. We need a treatment that saves lives until then.   Even Ivermectin’s producers don’t think it works against Covid. It is more likely that India’s low levels of obesity, acquired immunity because of poor public health, lower life expectancy have been the main contributor. Covid is mainly a problem for old, fat people who have been kept alive by Western medicine and live in hygienic places where they are not regularly exposed to other illnesses.

Their marketing spinner then mentioned that they were “honouring the principles of Te Tīriti” (I’d like to see what Vodafone’s interpretation is, because as far as I’m aware the “principles” are not legally defined and somewhat vague as in they can interpreted any way one wants to) and she bangs on about how they “don’t condone racism in any way”.

Which of course, is an honorable thing (not being racist, I agree 100%) … however I immediately saw a double-standard in play.

Which is, if Vodafone are really that committed to not condoning racism (eg by threatening other organisations such as Mediaworks, to cancel their hosts) then why are Vodafone Aoteraoa not condoning their “racist customers”?

That is, why aren’t Vodafone cancelling accounts of the majority of their own customers, who don’t care that Talkback radio can be controversial (and the majority of whom, are not racist anyway)?

Ouch – I guess Vodafone don’t want to lose customers as they will then go broke (go woke go broke)!

In other words Vodafone are hypocrites of the worst kind – they virtue signal and bully other organisations, but don’t practice what they preach by “cancelling” (probably) >75% of their own customers (who are indifferent to talkback radio) to remain “pure”!

Also for a laugh, I LMFAO when I read this Michael Bassett column, which slightly predates the Banksie controversy.

Bassett puts the boot into Vodafone for basically being “snake oil salesmen”, not delivering on their promise and being uncontactable when he tried to hold them to account (to simply provide the service that they sold him)!

First: NEVER SUCCUMB TO ANY PHONE SALESMAN.

Second: STEER CLEAR OF VODAFONE’s BROADBAND/LANDLINE SERVICES, ESPECIALLY ANY PROPOSED DEAL RELIANT ON VERBAL PROMISES.

According to an exhaustive and fascinating new analysis on Revolver News, there is no evidence that Brian Sicknick was hit with a fire extinguisher at any point during the day. None. No video. Nothing.

The officer’s body apparently bore no signs of trauma. In fact, on the night of January 6, long after rioters at the Capitol had been arrested or dispersed, Brian Sicknick texted his brother from his office.

According to his brother, Sicknick said he’d been, quote, “Pepper sprayed twice and he was in good shape.” Twenty-four hours later, Officer Brian Sicknick was dead.

How did Officer Sicknick die? The head of the Capitol Police Union has said he had a stroke, no cause given. More than that, we still don’t know. Sicknick’s body was cremated immediately. Authorities have refused to release his autopsy.

No one has been charged in his death. No charges are pending.

  Raising rents $50 pw was a complete red herring, aka a lie. Individual students got the $50 income but rents did not go up by $50 per student occupier. And in the unlikely event the rent per room went up by $50 the students could vote with their feet.
  
  At the time some landlords went public saying the rent of their flat went up by $50 and in some cases was still well below the market. It was a beat up and a lie.
  
  And at the time Grant Robertson invited students and others to email if about their rent. Many did thinking he would do something. (LOL)
  
  Well he did do something. Told them to apply to the Tenancy Tribunal for a rent reduction. AFAIK, and yes I looked at the time, nobody did.

The tone and Left-wing politics of Radio NZ lean against freedom of speech.

The State Radio’s web site features an article by an ethnic-Bangladeshi Muslim, Saziah Bashir, which advocates broadcasters should not give John Banks a radio platform.

Bashir, who is in her 30s, writes:

“How many times a year do we endure this almost formulaic ‘faux pas’ by an old white man in the media, followed by a half-assed [sic] apology and a tedious parade of excuses. Why do we keep giving these people a platform?

Bashir adds a view of the country:

Are Bangladeshi immigrants not settlers here?

In a reprint from a piece funded by NZ on Air, Bashir also says:

“… as long as New Zealand’s governing institutions remain mostly white, and as long as the parties running offer mostly white candidates to choose from, non-white New Zealanders are not going to feel truly represented.”

In the last census, 2018, the population of New Zealand was 70 per cent white.

Further to my 1.01 post I see in The Herald it is allegedly due to him being involved in the National Party spoofing of the air head Anna Lorcks embarrassing performance in the house the other night.

Having watched her performance a couple of hours ago I am ashamed to say that she is MP for my electorate. Not with my support though.

  Top level sport in a number of a disciplines has been fucked for a long time.
  Drugs have blighted track and field for more than fifty years, cycling, snooker, horse racing, rugby to a degree, baseball
  Back in the mid sixties I used to go along every Saturday during the summer and throw the discus, shot, hammer, javelin at athletic meetings in Chch.
  All the local athletes were there including Robin Tait. At the start of one season he turned up about three stone bigger than before & told everyone he’d been taking steroids, which wasn’t banned in those days. I remember one of the coaches saying he’ll be dead in his forties. He was.

Got an email from the assessor
Asking her to apply for a community services card.
Rang them eligibility
Must earn, as a couple, less than $46k GROSS
including National super.
National super is $19 338 pa
So can earn $26 700 Gross pa. ie $12. 84 per hr
Min wage $18.90phr
So they offer these things, but most are ineligible.

I have just opened the local community newspaper – the Rodney Times, which is put out by Stuff.

There are probably three or four pages devoted to telling us about New Zealand’s – I’m sorry, Aotearoa’s – history. They have, unusually, branched out from concentrating solely on how we Europeans have ruined the lives of all Maori people who ever lived, and also delved into how gay men were persecuted and an anti-Jewish hate-speech prosecution.

At a quick glance, it seems to boil down to:

– Colonialism screwed everything
– All history is written from a European standpoint, so we can’t trust it
– If you’re not Maori, you need to feel guilty
– If you’re not gay, you need to feel guilty
– If you don’t feel guilty, you must be made to feel guilty
– Fortunately for you, we’re on hand to do just that

And joy of joys, they promise they’re going to spend the next few MONTHS investigating our history. IE, trying to make everyone who isn’t Maori feel guilty.

Ah well, at least it’ll make it that much quicker flicking through the pages to see if there’s anything of interest …
