      It was in fact contemplated and researched, but did not prove practical. What’s wrong with speculating and promoting possible solutions, being, like, outside the box.
      
      After all, if Trump had followed the purely conventional wisdom we’d still be sitting around with vaccines being more than a year away. All the experts said that developing a vaccine (let alone vaccines) in six months was completely impossible, and that there was no point attempting it.
      
      Maybe thinking outside the square can be helpful, no ? After all, the “experts” have been pretty massively wrong on almost all points of this pandemic.

So the Electricity Authority has given up on trying to ping Meridian and Contact for allegedly spilling water for commercial reasons. The water was spilled for safety reasons. EA issued its draft ‘ruling’ for the companies for the companies to consider and the response was no doubt a veiled ‘see you in the Supreme Court if need be’. End of matter.

    I suspect the EA had to be seen to do something especially as there are continuing rumblings from small retailers such as Electric Kiwi who, to cut a long story short, expect to be effectively subsidised by the five ‘gentailers’. Incidentally I did a ‘Powerswitch’ exercise yesterday and found I could save all of $75 compared with the ‘gentailer’ I currently use. It was not worth switching especially as the margin of error in the calculations would have been at least $100.
    Years ago (early 1960’s) there was a General Manager of the former NZ Electricity Department who was concerned at the cost of transmission projects and considered ‘factors of safety’ when designing power pylons were too high and considered they could be reduced somewhat. Much of the structural design relied on rules of thumb as computer software to do a rigorous analysis was not then available. Pylons were made to the new skinnier design and some fell over in high winds and the pylons of that genre had to be strengthened and as far as I know the strengthened pylons are still providing good service. Anyway the bean counters wanted a ‘please explain’ when a HVDC pylon near Oteranga Bay (near Makara Beach) collapsed. The response was that when laying the Cook Strait cables the Photinia (the cable laying ship) tugged a bit hard on a cable which in turn put excessive tension on one of the transmission line conductors which caused the pylon to collapse.
    It would be easy to criticise that General Manager who could be irascible at times but he was concerned that NZ had a reliable supply of electricity at reasonable cost. His salary would have been a pittance in real terms when compared with the salaries of the Chief Executives of the five ‘gentailer’ companies. He was awarded a well deserved CBE on his retirement.

      Deliberately spilling hydro power water without proper reason is a crime (s271 Crimes Act) maximum penalty 5 years prison. This would be a novel use of s271 but I consider it would stick.

Te Puni Kokiri announces the launch of a new electronic card for Maori only. Named the “Brown card” it will be designed to enable Maori to access the bewildering number of privileges and entitlements they are gaining. A spokesman said “with just a swipe our long suffering people can enjoy their special rights under the new Maori health agency, vote in the new wards and gain access to customary fishing rights. As more benefits come on stream the Brown card will be like the Gold card only better”.
When asked about how the technology was developed the spokesman said “that was the easy part. We recognise that not all Maori want apartheid. From those who do we found a massive chip on their shoulders which we were able to incorporate into their swipe cards and it worked a treat”.

The indoctrination in our education system continues to move ahead at a rapid pace with secondary school principals- Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka, for example- directing teachers to avoid gender-specific words such as ‘boys and girls’ when speaking to their classes. Out with the binary and in with non-gendered terms such as ‘students’ so that noone, supposedly, feels excluded. Young teachers have already been schooled in this nonsense at universities and teachers’ colleges. The older ones fear for their jobs if they speak out about it. Sigh!

  Siemens has a really interesting pilot underway with removing CO2 from the atmosphere, splitting water into H2 and O2, then combining it all to make methane, then methanol, then petrol. “Carbon neutral petrol”.
  
  Their rational is that internal combustion engines are going to be with us for at least another 50 years, and they will need fuel. Seems sensible.
  
  So removing CO2 from the atmosphere isn’t as silly as you think.
  
  Be curious, not judgemental.

    Ok, this is not something you can do with a very sharp knife.
    
    There are a very limited number of ways to do this – the major way being electrolysis (What Megan Woods thinks is great). Electrolysis is only about 50% efficient in “high efficiency” settings. About half that is more typical.
    
    So you’d be far better off just using 100% of the energy as electricity rather than 50% as hydrogen.
    
    There are some potential other methods coming down the pipe but those are far from proven yet.
    
    Then react the hydrogen with CO2 to produce methane by stripping off the O2 as water – thereby using up two thirds of that precious hydrogen you just made:
    
    If my chemistry from 40 years ago is still right:
    
    6H2 + CO2 -> CH4 + 4H2O
    
    So we started with a system that was 50% efficient (making hydrogen), then throw 2/3 or it away – so we’re down to 16% efficient. We do however gain the carbon which brings that back to maybe 30%.
    
    Then we burn it in an ICE which is perhaps 30% efficient, so 10% of out useful energy remains.
    
    You’d be 10x better off using the electricity.
    
    So why do these companies say they are doing this sort of research? Good PR.
    
    Much better: just remember that CO2 is plant food.
    
    Being curious, not judgemental is one of those uiseless throwaway statements like “love conquers all”. Engineers are extremely judgemental because they are looking for solutions that work – they are not just dreaming.

      Sure, I know that.
      
      But it is a way to turn cheap electricity into something carbon neutral that you can burn in an internal combustion engine. Got any other options for doing that? Remember … we will have internal combustion engines with us for at least the next 50 years and this is an attempt to come up with a cleaner solution for them.
      
      And it’s less about energy efficiency as it is about cost efficiency.
      
      BTW I have two degrees in engineering and I’m not a dreamer. But still curious.

        With large amounts of cheap electricity, this isn’t necessarily a silly idea at all. The problem being the supply of the ‘Leccy to start with. Fusion might do it, as possibly would modular fission plants.
        
        There is a huge existing investment in distributing liquid fuels, and this way one could continue to utilise that. Using electricity for transport does assume that battery or other energy storage mechanisms will improve sufficiently and become economic enough for genuine widespread use.

    PV hydrogen is now cheap enough to make petrol for less than $100/barrel. Just a matter of scaling up production. And it will get cheaper.
    
    Thermageddonists can therefore close up shop and get on with more productive things – in 20 years renewables will have eradicated fossil fuels due to lower cost.

Now we have Statistics that say they were wrong and have apologized for the mistakes, not a word from our wannabe Celebrity Prime Minister on how her figures have not decreased like she continues to spout.

  53% of the voting public thought she was lovely and kind – but she has a big problem that is going to cost a lot of taxpayers money and that is that she has to keep those women who previously voted for National – estimated at 400,000 in her camp.
  The school girls now coming to vote will take time to make that work too !
  So she will do nothing that might lose that new Labour middle class women for the next election.

        Okay, the numbers (52.61%) add up, but I don’t accept your reasoning; I am sure that is not what Paulus means.
        
        There was no agreement between Labour and NZ First to campaign together for re-election. They campaigned separately, with NZ First hoping just to survive, which everyone knew (from the polls) was extremely unlikely. The Labour-NZ First coalition government (that included, by necessity, the Greens) most certainly was not “campaigning for re-election.”
        
        By your reasoning, Paulus should be saying that 60% (including Green Party voters) “of the voting public thought she was lovely and kind”.
        
        In actual fact, as we all know, knowing that NZ First was almost certainly finished, many people abandoned National and voted Labour, because they feared a Labour-Greens majority coalition government.
        
        Therefore, again, by your reasoning, given the outcome, Paulus should be saying 58% “of the voting public thought she was lovely and kind”, but, even then, that is hardly likely to be true of the 10%+(?) of National voters who voted Labour, is it?
        
        I await, no doubt in vain, for Paulus’ clarification as to his thinking.

    You do have to admit that the 2020 US presidential election was one out of the box. It basically broke every conventional wisdom tenet that existed.
    
    1. There were 19 counties in the US that voted with every presidential winner since 1980 (and some go back further, one to 1952) and in 2020 18 of those went to Trump. And not just went, average margin was 16 points. One went to Biden by 6 points. That is unusual.
    
    2. No previous candidate in the last century has lost after winning Florida, Ohio, and Iowa – except Nixon in 1960 and it is generally accepted that he was indeed cheated out of victory by vote fraud.
    
    3. Across the nation, Biden generally polled below Hillary Clinton and well below Obama, except in selected key swing state counties where he outpolled Obama by at least double digits and often by 30% or more. So undoubtedly the most brilliantly targeted campaign in history.
    
    4. Benfords law, not an absolute but basically a statistical observation that in genuinely randomly generated numbers the most common first digit is 1, followed by 2 etc. The vote totals in counties are effectively random in occurrence, and indeed all of Trumps vote numbers obey this law. So do all of Biden’s numbers for non contentious counties. However for counties where Biden received large additional votes over Previous candidates in key swing states, those numbers do NOT obey the law. Leading to a suggestion that those numbers are not randomly generated by votes but by interventions that are not random.
    
    None of those is proof positive of vote irregularities, but taken together they do present a case that the 2020 election was indeed highly unusual and departed from expected norms in voter behaviour.

Are the effects of Leaky Buildings, Christchurch and Wellington Earthquakes starting to appear.
Don’t want to damage/end your career – leave the responsibility resting on someone else.
Is the salary worth the risk of becoming a murderer or charged with manslaughter.
What will happen in this new era of think big buildings and construction.
Do we need to realise that accidents do still happen and not every outcome can be prevented.

  I was at the Central Institute of Technology when it just opened in about 1975 completing an NZCE (remember those?) in mechanical engineering.
  
  Bruce, the Navy guy on the course, had T shirts made up with a goofy picture with the caption ‘six months ago i couldn’t spell enginajer, now I are one!’
  
  I have no longer got the T shirt but still have the qualification. Any openings for me at 66 that involve extensive coffee breaks or should I apply to the gubbermint or council although I suspect that may be too many coffee breaks for my metabolism . . .

      But on the subject of Rotorua…my son and I have just returned from a very pleasant three nights at the Blue Lake Holiday Park…while in Rotovegas we took a couple of Tiki-tours up the “motel mile” on Fenton Street. I have to report no sign of gang colours in unit windows or gang members hanging around outside.
      
      I did however notice a “Rotovegas Motel” and a “Rotovegas Boxing Gym” which rather gives the lie to Mr John Stanton’s claim made here that “no-one in our city uses that term for it.”

  Maggy, the afternoon show on Magic had a motel owner on discussing the horrendous damage the WINZ clients do to their rooms. Rip fixtures off the walls and leave sheets so filthy as to be unusable. They try to evict bad cients but WINZ say ‘what about the children’. There must come a time when children can’t be used as an excuse for bad behaviour.

        Will help only if a clean Bill of health is given. It will be interesting; what if enough invalid ballots are found to tip the state to Trump, which is a possibility though I have no idea just how likely.
        
        Given that so many in the US do doubt that the election results were arrived at honestly, it has always seemed to me that a series of exacting audits into the votes in the most doubtful counties are in fact necessary. If there was fraud, show it up and prevent it happening again; and if there wasn’t put the doubt to rest. It is very unhealthy to the democratic process in the US that such doubts about the vote and the voting process remain unaddressed. And just shouting loudly that there is no evidence and vigorously attempting to prevent any scrutiny is doing further damage.
        
        Find out, and deal with the results.

I find it quite interesting that the article doesn’t ONCE refer to the fact that Caitlyn used to be Bruce. Not once. Even when talking about her past, the article states that “Jenner came to fame as an athlete when she won gold in the Olympic decathlon in 1976. Then she starred on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, a reality show which followed the lives of her family.”

Why would they not state that Jenner won gold WHEN SHE WAS STILL A MAN? It’s as if her past incarnation as Bruce Jenner never happened, or as if once you decide that even though you were born a man, you’re really a woman, then your male life not only ceases, it is erased and shall never be spoken of again. Bizarre.

They walked all the way down from the Civic Theatre to the bottom of Custom Street. She said other than the dreadful state of the place, the most worrying thing was that they didn’t see ONE kiwi.

“Old pukeko,” is her insult to the resisters, though from the Stuff article’s accompanying photograph she’s no chick herself.

Her article could be worth a glance as an example of where NZ Pidgin is headed: an incomprehensible jumble.

We have two spoken languages: English, the world lingua franca, and Maori, the regional indigenous tongue.

NZ Pidgin is the jumbled jabber of the Woke.

Note: Be careful if you want to comment on this as there’s been publicity of a sad case of a woman suffering early-onset dementia and who has a very close name to that of the Woke scribbler, Jenny Nicholl.

A weekend puzzle: decipher this slab of NZ Pidgin and ponder whether the Maori language needs a feminine noun form for Porphyrio porphyrio, the purple swamp hen.

    And really, there’s no big drama on macrons – it’s telling you where there’s long vowels like in Finnish or Latin.
    
    You can always write in double vowels for a long vowel, which will make Maori words look Estonian or Finnish hehehe.
    
    Interestingly, Latin had accents for their long vowels.
    
    Like the paint on the sculptures, the accents often have worn off from inscriptions on ancient buildings and tombstones.
    
    So just like we imagine Roman sculptures to be marble white (when in fact they were colour painted in fancy colours)
    
    we (well language lovers) were thinking Latin was written without accents – but it was written with accents, even in bathroom graffiti and brothel ads, to show the long vowels like in Maori.
    
    So most modern Latin text books have macrons put back in the typed text, to show the long vowels like in Maori.

      When Ancient Romans did use diacritical marks in writing and stone engraving, apparently rather than a macron, they used an apex (like an acute) or a sicilicus (like a reversed “c”) above the letter.
      
      Macrons are used by modern Latin scholars.
      
      As CommanderC indicates, the Finnish alphabet has variations of its “s” and “z” with carons (some describe a caron as like an inverted hat). Finnish vowels include a couple with umlaut-like symbols, but these seem to indicate “front” and “back” tongue-position in pronunciation.
      
      Russian has two symbols, included as part of the alphabet, that similarly indicate “soft” and “hard” tongue positions.
      
      There’s no problem with using macrons in the Maori language, but if the Woke want to absorb slabs of Maori into an NZ Pidgin they would be wise not to push macrons in this context. Enduring pidgin languages are as simple as possible.
      
      If you’ve got a grasp of Finnish, CommanderC, I doff my hat to you.
      
      The use of Finnish as an example is interesting, given the way Finnish has risen from being the secondary language to the ruling class’s Swedish. It became the country’s main language again. No doubt that attracts the attention of Maori activists.

        Finns would have had a harder task restoring Finnish to the dominant language if the ruling class had spoken English, the world lingua franca, rather than Swedish, which has about 10 million native speakers.
        
        English must have about 450 million native speakers (US population 332 million, UK 68m, Australia 26m, English-speaking Canada 19m, NZ 5m), plus more than half a billion people who speak English as their second language.

Other than sounding more proficient in Te Reo than Kupe, whenever ZB’s Jack Tame talks of his frequent visits to destinations with a strong Maori heritage, he always gushes about the people and the location.

This morning it was the wonders Ahipara and 90 Mile Beach…. and his recommendation that all Kiwis should put it on their bucket list.

As my partner just said, he must have been on a Tour Bus. The last time he was there. he made the mistake of leaving his car parked on the side of the road and going for a walk.

  Maggie, the wild North has nothing to do with climate or scenery, it is the residents you need to be aware of. We would have loved to have visited the big kauri tree but as the sign warned it is a 15 minute walk and ‘lock your vehicle’. The parking area was littered with vehicle glass, a sure sign of smash and grab.

On Aljazeera this morning, in a program “Counting the Cost”, NZ housing was discussed. The only spokesperson on this program to explain the extreme rise in housing prices in NZ was one, Bernie Smith, the CEO of the Monte Cecelia Housing Trust! He clearly stated the failure of this Government’s Housing policies, and the apparent inability of this government to solve the problem, and highlighted the total failure of the Kiwibuild program in NZ. Did quite a good job in showing what a failure the Arden Government has been with their Housing Policy! Was our failing government asked to contribute to the program to explain the failure of their Housing policies! Declined to comment, maybe!

All guests were at pains to emphasise the trial was a wonderful example of justice and the decision was the right one. Just heard Joe Biden say that reducing greenhouse emissions would “create jobs”.

No. If reducing emissions increased economic growth it would have happened already. Reducing emissions requires intervention in markets so energy is produced less efficiently, ie at higher costs than would be delivered by markets.

Germany is the poster child for this outcome. I’m not sure that Joe Biden knows any more about physics and economics than Jacinda. Luckily you can’t beat physics.

Able Seaman Robert Edward MARCHIONI, DOB 1/4/1932 Taihape.
Robert Marchioni, a labourer, joined the RNZN on 13 October 1949 as a 17 year old and was committed for six years from the 1 April 1950. His first posting was on the Loch-class frigate HMNZS Tutira on 26 March 1950. His next sea posting was on another Loch-class frigate HMNZS Rotoiti. He joined the ship’s company on 31 July 1950 and remained on this ship until his death. He was promoted to the rating of Able Seaman on 13 April 1951. Rotoiti was deployed to Korea as her sister-ships had been. On 26 August 1951, while a member of a shore party, Robert Marchioni was killed in action. He was given a posthumous Mention-in-Despatches. [3] On 26 August 1951, a raiding party was organised from Royal Marines off HMS Ceylon and seamen from Rotoiti. This party would land at Sogon-ni with the aim of taking prisoners and destroying any gun emplacements if located. Marchioni begged to be allowed to join the raid. Two boats from Rotoiti took the party ashore. As they attempted to assault a North Korean gun emplacement from the rear, they were taken under fire by a machinegun. Marchioni was hit as he rose to throw a grenade and was killed instantly. His body was carried to the beach where the boats were but had to be left ashore as the party was under heavy fire from the defenders. The destroyer HMS Charity and Rotoiti proved covering fire from their 4-inch guns to allow the party to recover to the ships without further loss. [4] Lieutenant-Commander B.E. Turner described Marchioni ‘as one of the greatest seaman boys I ever had.’[5] Turner requested permission to recover the body in daylight but was refused. Marchioni’s body was never recovered. A funeral service was held on that morning after the raid for the dead sailor.[6]
