Opinion: Damion Grant – Jacinda Ardern a truly transformational Leader.
The one thing I admired about Margaret Thatcher in a addition to a magnificent sense of style was her determination to get things done.
In Jacinda Ardern we are blessed – or cursed, depending on your perspective – with a Leadercut from the same Fabric as Thatcher , even if they wear their garments very differently.
With each passing month it is becoming evident that Ardern does not mearly want to be re-elected , she wants to leave behind a very different NZ to the one she inherited.
She May Succeed.
It seems appropriate to point out that I missed the trend, writing onthe night of the last election that I expected Ardern to Govern from the centre, I misjudged this Prime Minister and her ambition.
We are in the middle of transformation away from the ideas and dreams of Sir Rodger Douglas and towards a new centralization of our society and economy- a chance that will almost certainly endure long beyond the lifespan of this Government.

  Jacinda’s legacy will be a nation divided along race lines and in conflict. Reversing the ridiculous climate change and free speech changes will be easy.
  The balloon will go up when the seabed and coastline is embedded back with the public, the water assets returned to local authorities, the history curriculum abolished, the Maori health authority terminated, referenda on Maori wards and the Maori seats in parliament and the Treaty of Waitangi industry ended.
  Then we will see much wailing, hikoi and serious ructions. We must stand firm. It will be very ugly.

    It will be impossible to reverse. The left and the media will cry racism when a future government makes any attempt to change what Jacinda has done. Once the laws are passed there will be no going back for New Zealand. Meanwhile with both the Government and the media obsessing about the effects of colonisation the divisions will continue to grow between Maori and non Maori. Instead of seeking racial equality for all, NZ will become a country where one race is deliberately alienated in order to raise another up.

IMO, they know this and don’t even attempt to hide their smugness. Evidence of their smugness is festooned throughout smarmy Willie’s so-called explanation about the He Puapua Plan/Report.

  No, Ms Ardern is nothing like Margaret Thatcher.
  For a start, Mrs Thatcher studied chemistry at Oxford University and was a research chemist before becoming a barrister.
  She had intelligence, knowledge and integrity which contributed to a stellar governance career.
  Ms Ardern “studied” Comms for a BA and she comes across here as spoilt and entitled amateur.

    The GB she inherited was a complete mess. Took real skill and a spine of steel to do what she did, and the left hate her for it, but they equally forget the state the country was in as a result of labour governance.

  She was a top Oxford University (Girton) scholar who studied Chemistry, then was called to the Bar as a Barrister later.
  Three terms and longest British Prime Minister.

    Quite agree, I felt it was very cleverly written – there are a number of sentences in it that obviously are a take off.
    “workers will next year get another day off to celebrate the joys of living under the benevolence of our glorious leader.”
    “what matters is the scope of this prime minister’s ambition, not the success or failure of individual projects.”
    ” The only real thing slowing the Ardern agenda is a skill shortage in her front bench and an inability to implement some of this administration’s more ambitious projects.”
    But then in his final sentence
    “towards a new centralisation of our society and economy – a change that will almost certainly endure long beyond the lifespan of this government.” so perhaps he is serious or simply stating that no National Government ever changes any thing that Labour bring in.

I remember when

What a strange world we live in at present.
If you are a children you can decide for yourself what sex you are.
But councils can decide you can’t use their facilities because they think your views are controversial.
The Government is all for protecting the rights of minorities and the LBTG+.
However, they can compel you to go into lockdown and restrict your movements.
All this despite the fact that freedom of choice is how we have evolved to where we are.

Hate speech and something that puzzles me a bit …
Of the Christchurch mosque gunman, Prime Minister Ardern said – “He sought many things from his act of terror, but one was notoriety, and that is why you will never hear me mention his name. He is a terrorist, he is a criminal, he is an extremist, but he will, when I speak, be nameless” – Hansard

Ardern’s motivation seemed to be to deny the shooter notoriety, but her own remarks appear to have ensured that his name be mentioned – in explaining why she’ll not utter tit – in media locally to world-wide coverage, like the BBC, Guardian, ABC News, Washington Post, USAToday and Vogue.

But further it seems to have incited (or inspired) the Royal Commission in their Report to write –
2 The terrorist attack was carried out by Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who has since been convicted of terrorism, the murder of 51 people and attempted murder of 40 people. He is now serving a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. We generally refer to him in our report as “the individual”. His name will not appear again. … and it doesn’t in 792 pages.

So they followed Ardern’s dehumanisation of the shooter, and neutralise him as an unknown.

And now Ayman Jamal, producer of the proposed THEY ARE US movie, says –
“In a mirror of New Zealand’s own approach, during the film the gunman is never shown and his name is never spoken.” which may ‘whitewash’ the shooter to the point of vanishing, and so detract from the reality of the event, side line victims, and denigrates the whole country by saying it is New Zealand’s own approach.

And – “When the film was announced, it was said that the main protagonist would be Ardern and her response to the tragedy during that first week”, so they have backed of that somewhat, but the whole approach – not depicting the shooter – is her influence, despite “Ardern has distanced herself from the film, saying she had no knowledge or involvement with it.”

Is this not a remarkable example of “hate speech” by stating you’ll not actually say something?
And under Kris Faafoi’s stipulation – not a definition, but a condition – it is “hate speech” if it normalises hatred against a group to be protected under the Human Rights Act, and encouraged others to do the same?
(normalise – bring or return to a normal or standard condition or state)

I would be keen to know if Stephen Franks, a spokesperson for the Free Speech Coalition and a founding director of Wellington law firm Franks Ogilvie, agrees.

  He is just like numerous other disturbed, mass killers whose names have dropped out of our memory… but Tarrant’s has been given extra significance by virtue of not being used by officials.

    Maggy Wassilieff, I thought Ardern’s not naming Tarrant goes some way to reducing the reality of the horror of his actions – all 51 people killed, and 40 wounded were attacked by an unnamed gunman?
    And the Royal Commission referring to Tarrant as “the individual” also neutralises him as an unknown. It seems a little like when someone interferes with the facts of the Holocaust.
    It may not be “hate speech” but it seems to diminish what befell a group of people, which appears to meet one of Faafoi’s ‘conditions’.

These changes will promote a stronger, fairer, more diverse tertiary education system that that helps us grow and share New Zealand’s research with our communities.

      Cultural inclusiveness: the PBRF should reflect the bicultural nature of New Zealand and the special role and status of the Treaty of Waitangi (te Tiriti o Waitangi), and should appropriately reflect and include the full diversity of New Zealand’s population.
      
      So the PBRF reflects both our bicultural nature and full diversity; perhaps the authors of this should reflect on the conceptual coherence of this criterion.
      
      Still, for $20,000, despite not being a staff member, I’m prepared to research the English TOW, counting how many times ‘partnership’ and ‘equity’ appear in it. Using the new funding formula, they should be able to find a Maori staff member who can do the same research on the Maori TOW for $50,000.

        A very simple measure of how the parties believe an agreement should be is how they acted after the agreement was made.
        
        Do we have any evidence to show that maori acted as if they were in “partnership” with the crown immediately after, and for the next 100 years, the treaty was signed.
        
        If there is such evidence I think it has been well concealed.

    Look, sorry – that was a straight up shocked response, I need to put the keyboard away when I do that.
    
    Let’s unpack this in a broader sense. Some pertinent thoughts (in no particular order, and with Biomedical Science bias):
    
    If a white male has a potential new drug for breast cancer that’s almost ready for clinical trials, and loses out because a Maori or Pasifika researcher has let just say a “2.5X or 2X lesser” idea about how a tumor grows –> all of NZ loses out on the new drug. Whilst the tumor progression grant is 12-15-never years from affecting clinical medicine. Breast cancer affects Maori and Pasifika as well (obv.).
    
    Funding anything but the best science (hard, soft, natural, biomedical) short changes the tax payers doing the funding and will result in poor quality science with no hope of advancing our understanding of the real world –> may as well just burn the $ on a bonfire in downtown WLG, AKL, HAM, CHCH or DUN… do you know what 1,000,000 of $20 notes looks like? At least the homeless would keep warm for an hour or so.
    
    This is precisely the sort of crap that drives (drove) postgraduate students, post doctoral fellows and research scientists/Academics like me from NZ, and ensures we won’t come back (some may think my absence is a good thing, fair enuf). NZ’s academic landscape will become [even more of] a wasteland under such a proposal.
    
    Controversial point: I would suggest instead of decimating the grant proposal/review system, the central bodies include strategic initiatives in e.g. Maori & Pasifika Health, Maori & Pasifika natural remedies (pharmacognosy), Maori & Pasifika history. Now, these competitions would be open to EVERYBODY, but in this way the funding bodies can implement strategic initiatives that strengthen cross-cultural ties (oh wait, do we/you still have those in NZ?) and increase knowledge in areas we know need help – such as poorer health care seeking in Maori and Pasifika, poorer medical outcomes, higher rates of certain diseases etc. For example see Ed Mitchel from Peds at AKL Uni/Starship and all the amazing work he did on rheumatic fever (massively over represented in Pasifika families).
    
    I could go on, but this is likely tl:dr. See post above for the concise version.

Which is in the same vein as the world wide narrative that is flooding search engines (on Google at least) that only the vaccine will stop Covid, when experienced medical professionals ~~will~~ may tell you (if know you are not a govt or media mole), that Hydroxychloroquine, Zinc, Ivermectin, and Doxycycline are effective in treating Covid.
  
  Part of our hate speech laws push is to silence dissent and anything against the narrative. Frau Ardern even saying that it is disturbing that even experienced doctors are seeding doubts about the vaccines. But rather than listen to what those experienced doctors are saying, she labels them as having bought into the anti-vax conspiracy theory.
  
  Doctors know that if they speak out against the narrative, they are at risk of having their medical licence revoked.

  I have said that we need to return to pure electoral representation, where an MP is accountable to his/her electorate. And where the electorate, not the party, chooses what candidates, it wants to stand for election. And all MPs must pass basic real world IQ tests, and be drug tested.
  
  No-one in their right mind will vote for a dope smoking bludger. They just come in on party lists. Party lists are a bit like bad farming – you buy few rough looking one or two year old lambs, and you get the daggs and parasites thrown in for free.

        An indicative (or non-binding) referendum was held in September 1992.
        
        People were asked:
        
        If they wanted to change electoral system, and
        What kind of system they preferred, with four options to choose from: MMP, single transferrable vote (STV), supplementary member (SM), and preferential vote (PV).
        The Government promised to hold a binding referendum if the majority wanted change.
        
        While voter turnout was low, at only 55% of registered voters, support for change was clear at nearly 85%. Nearly 70% of those voters preferred MMP as a voting system.
        
        1993 referendum
        The second, binding referendum was a straight contest between FPP and MMP. Campaigning for and against MMP was fierce.
        
        The 1993 referendum was held at the same time as the 1993 general election, and voter turnout was high at 85% of registered voters.
        
        MMP won 54% of the vote, to FPPs 46%. New Zealand had chosen a new electoral system.”
        
        We also had a relook in 2011 and a majority elected to retain MMP however recommended changes were never made and some of the changes that were made were not taken to the electorate.

        That’s SM – not MMP. It’s more proportional than FPP, but less so than MMP. FWIW I don’t think any other country uses it.

        Jack!! Why couldn’t you have just said ‘STV (in large electoral districts)’, and be done with it?* The alternative system (to MMP, or FPP) has already been developed, and perfected.
        
        * That would also suit Master Mariner, too, I’m sure.
        
        This is why I occasionally point out here, that nothing we say on Kiwiblog has any effect whatsoever on public policy. Our comments don’t even have any effect on what other Kiwibloggers think!
        
        I’ve been banging on about how superior STV is, for almost eight years now, but whenever a Kiwiblogger mentions how we must “get rid of MMP / change our electoral system”, they never (and have never) said “to STV”! — a PR system whereby all MPs are directly elected by the People.
        
        Whatever our pet subjects are, “the message” just never gets through to others. It is so annoying!
        
        Following on from Tall Man’s 2:25PM comment, we are not “due” another referendum until at least the 2029 election. But, we are not likely ever to have another one — certainly not during the remaining years of my life. Why? Two reasons: 1) today’s electorate is not going to vote for FPP — just have a look at a photograph of Muldoon’s 1977 Cabinet, to see why; and 2) politicians hate the power that STV gives to the electors.
        
        The Nats gave the plebs a crack at changing away from MMP (in 2011), in the forlorn hope that they would choose SM. It didn’t fly.
        
        I’m sorry, Kiwibloggers, but we’re stuck with MMP for many, many, more years to come.

        Um, yes it is, Tall Man. (It is not precisely what the 1986 Royal Commission on the Electoral System recommended.)
        
        The Electoral Act 1993, in which today’s MMP system was enacted, came into force once the People voted for MMP at the 1993 General Election.
        
        The details of today’s MMP system were overseen by Murray McCully (Minister of Justice), with Ruth Richardson jumping up and down to make sure the South Island got 16 electorates, not the originally intended 15.

        The SM option was 90 Electorate seats (elected by FPP) and 30 PR seats. Proportionality would apply only to the 30 List seats, allocating the seats to the parties using the modified Sainte-Laguë method (by dividing each party’s Party vote by 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, etc., instead of by 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc., as with the Sainte-Laguë method used under MMP).

        The Right pine for FPP, because they know from history that, under that system, National is elected to government more often than Labour.
        
        They believe they are born-to-rule; indeed, that they are the natural rulers. They are so desperate to return to FPP that Tall Man is even proposing a referendum is held every three years, no doubt until the People “see sense / do the [R]ight thing!” It’s hilarious.
        
        (Does anyone here seriously think that David Seymour wants another referendum; that he / ACT would vote with National to ensure one is held, say, at the 2029 election? Hardly!)
        
        History also shows that changing electoral systems is notoriously hard to do — goodness knows, I know that, from personal experience — if only because elected representatives prefer to stay with the electoral system under which they were elected.

  Individuals reveal their preferences through both behavior and markets. The reality is that the vast majority of New Zealanders have no interest in learning the Maori language. If they were interested and willing to pay, Maori language schools would appear, just like the French, Spanish, and Chinese language schools that respond to demand for such learning.
  
  The Government’s strategy is essentially coercing people to use Maori by embedding it in English language. Seriously, there are government agencies that commence meetings with Maori prayers. All these public servants, usually not a single Maori in the room, saying Maori prayers that they have been forced to rote learn, not knowing what they mean. Then the singing starts up. Of course most of these people hate what they are doing but they cannot speak up.

    I can’t be bothered with most of your post but I can address the end bit.
    
    No, “most” meetings do not start with a “prayer”. In my experience only particular events or when welcoming people to the organisation do you have a mihi or welcome which is localised to the region you’re in, usually given by someone who is Maori or part of the leadership team.
    
    Depending on what it is, yes a chunk of people won’t grasp most of it, though a basic mihi is pretty easy to understand.
    
    And no it is not rote learned, in my experience the person delivering it is either fluent already or has learned what that specific welcome says and means, even if they don’t actually have fluent Te Reo skills.
    
    Long story short, yes sometimes it’s a bit lost on the crowd but it’s no worse than waiting for boring waffly English speeches to conclude so you can get to the reason you’re there.

      Where to start… I did not say “most” meetings. The person I spoke to told me it was material meetings like weekly staff meetings or working groups. So a few times per week there will be such meetings. She told me, and I have no reason to disbelieve her, that her government department has a Maori song describing the mission of the agency and they sing it before or after staff meetings. And she rote learns song and has no idea what it means.
      
      OK maybe she is lying to me. I doubt it.

The te reo-fication of One News seems to be less annoying now as it appears more glib, fast, and formulaic, so takes less time.
It still grates a little, when the front person is European, offers mihi, greetings or thanks, to an equally European reporter, and is about as self-ridiculing as the programme IDs on the rival channel that say ALL GOOD, THREE. Since the majority of Three’s programming appears to require ‘Violence’ warnings, they frequently cut from the most dire drama of excruciating circumstances to a screen that says ALL GOOD – totally atmosphere destroying.
The te reo-fication of One News seems to have a similar adverse effect, and I doubt anyone is enthused to study the language as a result.

But what does Simon Dallow on 1 News, most evenings, actually say in Maori that sounds like “A quin eh”?
Unless my hearing is going, and he says something entirely different, there no ‘q’ in Maori and a syllable can not end in a consonant. It may be one of the shortest phrases used, but seems the most annoying for not making any sense.
I will be grateful to anyone who can enlighten me.

  I saw an item on Seven Sharp on Friday night about mispronunciation of words (I specifically recall “jepradise” and a clip of JA saying exactly that).
  A linguistic expert (professor? Can’t recall) was then asked about the fuss over mispronunciation and she said that it really doesn’t matter.
  I was waiting for at least one of the two presenters to then ask why it is so necessary that words in te reo Maori simply HAVE to be correctly said? (To the point where it actually puts off some people from even trying the language.) Of course no such question was forthcoming.

Some years ago the US Left – and naturally the Left here on Kiwiblog – was very, very upset that the Republican-led Senate of the day refused to even look at the Obama Administration’s nomination for a Supreme Court justice to replace Scalia.

Loud were the cries of outrage about the process, and the “silly” fears of Merrick who was, they claimed, a mild, “moderate”, centre-leftist jurist with solid, sensible notions of how to administer justice.

I don’t think these claims were disputed much by the Right, but plenty had their suspicions that it was propaganda bullshit.

Garland’s few months as US Attorney General have shown that such suspicions were right on the money with this summation being the most concise:

  It was never about Garland in the senate, it was solely about McConnell retaining power and the chance to swing the court if the GOP nominee won in ’16.
  
  As we saw in the last couple of weeks, McConnell is quite willing to attempt to block more nominations right up until 2024 in order to attempt to install a 7-2 or 9-0 conservative court, if luck goes his way.
  
  Of course, that would be a filip for the GOP and the religious authoritarian movement. But it doesn’t account for the consequence which will inevitably come, increasing public support for a rebalancing of the court and stacking it with a majority of young liberal justices.

If, as a Catholic, I requested Benediction for a University function, I would be told to sod off. I suspect many other faiths would get the same.

But some don’t – and no-one bats an eyelid at the blatant anomaly. This is not about rightness of belief, it’s about consistency.

The authors tried out various masks, including KN95 respirators and surgical masks, on 45 healthy children ages 6-17 in southwest Germany. The room was “well ventilated several times” for each experiment, with CO2 content of ambient air kept under 0.1% by volume.

The first 3-minute measurement gauged “baseline” unmasked CO2 levels. The next 3-minute intervals were for CO2 content in “joint inhaled and exhaled air,” inhaled air only and exhaled air only.

Two thousand parts per million of CO2, or 0.2%, is the limit for closed rooms under German law, the study said. The child with the lowest CO2 level was three times higher than this limit, while one 7-year-old was measured with 25,000 parts per million.

Contrasts between the 2 types of masks were not significant. We measured means (SDs) between 13 120 (384) and 13 910 (374) ppm of carbon dioxide in inhaled air under surgical and filtering facepiece 2 (FFP2) masks, which is higher than what is already deemed unacceptable by the German Federal Environmental Office by a factor of 6.

The study was also shared by Johns Hopkins University epidemiologist Stefan Baral on twitter, who said, “(does sharing this make me an anti-masker?)”

Oranga Tamariki’s sudden closedown of the Christchurch “care and residence” facility for boys over abuse allegations is proving stupid and cruel.

Where are these young people to go?

Why did the organisation’s chief executive, Sir Wira Gardiner, ordered the closedown be expedited before there was accommodation for these young people.

This will likely prove a disastrously hasty decision for Oranga Tamariki, which is among the responsibilities of Kelvin Davis, Minister of both Corrections and Children.

A great example of the appalling regard for property rights in New Zealand. Another pakeha farmer from the south being booted again.
This is the reason for the SNA debate – quite simply if the state wants to control these areas the state should buy them.
Taking (or stealing ) use rights without compensation is bullying, by the state, of the worst kind!
Why own land when you can’t use it for increasing productivity ,making a living or simply enjoying it?
Just keep paying the mortgage, rates and other taxes — somehow

  All farmers should stop paying rates on “stolen land”.
  It is worse than the Zimbabwe land grab in many ways, the government wants to leave the land under your financial commitment control, but remove all rights to make your land profitable.
  You really can’t make this shit up.
  Gary Kircher the Mayor,made these comments before his election.
  “A review of the funding policy (which determines rates) to get a better equity about who is paying for what.
  Particularly in the farming area, where there are inequities in there. ”
  How about no rates from land that is no longer commercially viable through government intervention, that would be a good start.

HONESTLY…. how bad is this?

We just went for a quick drive up One Tree Hill to get rid of all last nights leftovers in the bins up there.
On the way back down, we stopped to watch a Chinese family chasing a tame Bantam. One of the kids caught it and quickly handed it to the father, who promptly stuffed the poor thing inside his jacket. Then they all ran off towards the carpark.

No guesses what they’ll be having tonite 🙁
