Grant Robertson and Jacinda Ardern are quick to spout about the good things in New Zealand like a strong tax take has kept the deficit 40 % lower than predicted, and says theirs no inclination to loosen the purse strings.
But they were prepared to lie and decieve New Zealander’s after it has been revealed the Goverment did a U Turn on a Rio Tinto Smelter .
The Government offered to pay million of dollars to Rio Tinto just months after promising they would not give a direct Subsidy after the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: ” we have said we do not believe we should be giving a direct Government subsidy to Rio Tinto, so that’s what we will be doing”.
Three Months later the Government wrote to Rio Tinto which owns 80% of New Zealand Aluminum Smelters (NZAS), with a offer of payments to begin in the next month January this year ” to achieve a managed exit for the Smelter and in consideration of our respective interests, the NZ Government will provide a Transmission transition paymentto NZAS of (blanked out)”it said.
This payment would start from January 2021 until December 2024.
National and Labourhave repeatedly said they will never repeat the $ 30 million direct paid by the National Government in 2013 to keep the Smelter open.

There is no more money for Nurses in our Hospitals that are over work and under paid which is causing major problems with Nurses leaving their jobs in droves because of the disrespect this Government shows.
There is no moey available to help a health service like St Johnswho are working full time fund raising to stay alive and provide the necessary services need to save many lives and their bitterness at Mike King for handing his medal back because he and many other think the Government are all talk with no substance shows Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson care more about themselves and how to keep power more than they care about New Zealander’s and the once held high respect that many overseas had for our Health Services.

    I’m looking forward to knowing how much of the tax take since 1 April 2020 has come from the billions that the Government and the RBNZ have pumped into the economy.
    
    If they want to crow about ‘how well’ they’re managing the economy in the here and now then they can also take ownership that the result is from lumbering generations with debt.

      I would imagine that $100 billion should have generated a fair bit of gst as the bulk of it seems to have been spent on comsumer goods.

  A couple of points, I for one supported topping up Rio Tinto simply to help out the Southern folk. $30 million is chicken feed in the grand scale of things and would be well below the welfare bill an early or sudden withdrawal would generate.
  
  Of course the money situation looks good, the government has poured billions into the economy and that all gets spent so at the very least the gst comes back almost immediately. Where the problem arises in my mind is that the bulk of the money has been for consumerism/housing and very little has been directed into infrastructure where it is both needed desperately and would have had a long term benefit.
  
  Importers have done well, builders a lot better than they could have expected, supply line providers have done well but a vast amount of the money has headed offshore and we are still left with piss poor water services in most of our cities, inadequate sewerage systems and crappy/inadequate roads.
  
  Despite things appearing great, were are heading to hell in a hand basket.

        Then list the years when labour did the same.

        Regardless, are you saying that Steven Joyce would not have implemented a wage-subsidy (or similar) scheme; that he would have thrown thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of “ordinary Kiwis” to the wolves; that he would have stood by, “Honest George” Forbes-like, while children starved?
        
        Of course you’re not, so I wonder what you are saying.
        
        Quite simply, because of COVID-19, we would still be in huge debt today, regardless of who was in government, with, as you say, worse to come — vide your “Look at the USA as an indicator”.

      Tony, I found this comment interesting.
      
      The Royal Commission’s various recommendations, including hate speech, was heavily influenced by Professor Paul Spoonley of Massey.
      He is a sociologist who has quite an axe to grind that NZ is riddled with far right racists, ready to kill at the drop of a YouTube video. And the Royal Commission was VERY receptive to this (false) narrative combined with emotional-laden testimony from people. So most of its recommendations adopted the quite Left-leaning professor’s – especially “social cohesion” (read as some of the “inclusive” aka social engineering the Government is doing).
      Not to say a Royal Commission wasn’t useful but overreached, which happens with responses to tragedies.

  If I was in Judith’s shoes, I would keep sowing confusion about this and also not point out any part of the proposed bill that is potentially ridiculous. Labour can find out the hard way.
  This is potentially one of Labour’s vulnerabilities in the lead up to 2023. Another implication is the draconian penalties proposed is going to make the repeal of ‘three strikes’ look rather two faced. Labour is proposing to have severe penalties for hurting peoples feelings, but reduce penalties for causing serious physical hurt.

Herald yesterday – 260 Rotorua motel units contracted, with full wraparound support for mostly families to be accommodated ‘longer term’.

Twelve Rotorua motels contracted for emergency accommodation

Questions – where were these hundreds of households living before, and why are they not living there now. Plenty of talk about ‘unaffordable rents’ even though tenants can access quite generous government funding (Accommodation Supplement, TAS and more). Then there is the cost to the taxpayer of motels.

Maybe there are other reasons tenancies were terminated. Maybe significantly increased risk and costs due to government policies, leading to decisions by landlords?

  The facts are that the government has reduced the number of motels able to take emergency housing clients from around 25 that were previously contracted to just 12.

    Why stop at only halving the number of motels available for emergency housing? Let’s go all the way. Reduce the number of motels to zero = no emergency housing clients.
    Cancel all health spending = no sick people.
    Cancel all police spending= no crime.
    Cancel the unemployment benefit = nobody unemployed.

      Nearly 10,000 rental vacancies advertised on Trademe, and that doesn’t include several thousand ads for flatmates. Plenty of options for those in emergency housing, provided they are high on the applicant list when they apply.

    John, the 12 Rotorua Motels announced this last week are only part of the picture. I was advised that these 12 are only for families that require two bedrooms – as against the many units for the homeless with only one bedroom. Rest assured, many more Motels will be required by MSD.

  Gubermint started knocking down old state house suburbs pre Ro panic. The old 60 yrs plus house / unit on a big section to replaced with multi story housing units. As a temporary solution they moved the feckless into motels. Its the usual gubermint stuff up its taking a lot longer and much more expensive than planned. Also its Labo so the thousands of those who cant be arsed working have also signed up.

So 4:44pm yesterday I get a text message saying,
“You are part of Group 3 for the Covid-19 vaccine rollout. This means you’ll be contacted soon with an invite to book your vaccination appt. NO TEXT REPLY”

I’ve looked to see what Group 3 entails? From the Covid website
“People who are at risk of getting very sick from COVID-19
You’re in this group if you:

are aged 65 or over, or
have a relevant underlying health condition, or
are disabled, or
are in a position of caring for a person with a disability, or
are pregnant (any trimester), or
are an adult in a custodial setting.”

I’m a late 40s male, who has taken one day off sick in the last ten years, and absolutely none of those predicaments listed apply to me.

Is anyone actually running this vaccine rollout?

    downtickers, really tell me you would take the risk with this, read this article from the UK, if the incidence of miscarriage jumped 366 % in a few months.
    Pfizer-BioNTech has had 23 miscarriages with women having the jab, Astravenica had 4.
    My advice to loved ones would be give it the miss way under these astonishing figures.
    I never thought it was normal for babies to hemorrhage in the stomach from mothers milk.
    This is just out of control.

      ACOG says that while trials are ongoing and DART data is not yet complete, the dangers to mother/fetus of catching the virus are far higher than taking the vaccine esp. in terms of miscarriage and preterm birth.

  As recently as two months ago, the “plan” was, if you can call it such a thing, to have all Group Three vaccinated by the end of June. Now, basically no one is getting a vaccine until 28 July, and that’s entirely dependent on sufficient stock of vaccines arriving in New Zealand.
  
  Little wonder that Chris Hipkins spends all his spare time looking at websites that show flight movements, hoping above hope that some of his reputation can be salvaged when this clusterf*ck is finally over.
  
  Now is the time for National to ramp up calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Government’s response to Covid-19, the single most expensive issue a New Zealand government has ever dealt with.

    One of my mates at the club was booked for his first jab this week, got a text half a day before his appointment to tell him that it had been cancelled because they’d run out of vaccine.
    And here was I thinking that they weren’t going to run out until next Tuesday.

      I am in group 3 because of my age – 80 plus – none of the other qualifications apply.
      The only time I see the GP is for my drivers licence renewal – every 2 years.
      I think they think to leave well alone. Which suits me just fine.
      And to be honest, I would rather not risk being one of the .01% who get complications from the vaccine.

  • People 65 years and over
  • Māori and Pacific kaumātua and their whānau
  • Border workers and their household contacts
  • Frontline healthcare staff
  • People 16-64 years with relevant underlying health conditions
  • Disabled people
  • Pregnant people.
  I took that to read any Maori adults could roll up with their kids and extended family and they would all get a jab.
  Don’t know any pregnant ‘people’. Are they the same as women or some kind of sub-species?

I was browsing through a few USA political blogs last night and the Jacinda/Judith spat featured on Ozy’s Presidential Brief…Cindy’s “Karen” zinger skewering Collins etc etc.
But if ever there was anyone who perfectly fits the “Karen” descriptor (white woman aggressively using her white privilege to get her way) it would have to be Jacinda Ardern – the ultimate Karen! We saw how thin-skinned and nasty our hot-headed Karen, sorry Jacinda, is when her veil of kindness (cough) slipped with her bitchy catty retort…while JC rose above it with comparatively senatorial composure – too much maturity and dignity to take Karen Ardern’s bait. Touché!

    The rest of the developed world DOES NOT CARE. Our governments are signing pre-paid, no liability contracts to get doses into arms, my second will be Tuesday and I’m mid 40s with no conditions. NZ’s lack of protection from the govt. through lack of vaccine procurement is nigh on a crime. The government-commissioned report, He Puapua, suggested a separate Māori Parliament or upper house, separate court and justice systems and Māori ownership of foreshore and seabed, as well as recommendations on cultural rights and equity.

Speaking to reporters after the announcement Jackson said while the Government had made clear its views on some aspects, such as a separate Māori Parliament, they were not ruling anything out. [1]

  Well, we are. I’m not racist, I’ve got a Maori son in law, one of my Scot gt.uncles
  was an amicus curiae of the Maori Land Court. But I’m not going to tolerate Maori activism to break up what was once a reasonably harmonious society.
  
  I don’t agree with pidgin Maori use or any partnership. We had to rescue them from their own people. The trade-off was plain: they accepted the sovereignty of the British Crown and we got to care for them along with habitation rights. Their language was not critical as was freely available for use on their Marae. It was little use to us as we had a well developed one already not restricted to basic tribal housekeeping and their spiritual concerns.
  
  Now it feels like the hand that fed them is being bitten. As for the notion of a separate superior Maori assembly allowing the Pakeha the rights of a captured tribe–get lost. That is an asset grab, along with everything else.
  
  The Govt has a duty to stop this and put it to the people before proceeding another day.

In case you were thinking of buying hybrid or an electric car:
Ever since the advent of electric cars, the REAL cost per mile of
those things has never been discussed. All you ever heard was the mpg in terms of gasoline, with nary a mention of the cost of electricity to run it. This is the first article I’ve ever seen and tells the story pretty much
as I expected it to.
Electricity has to be one of the least efficient ways to power things yet they’re being shoved down our throats. Glad somebody finally put engineering and math to paper.
At a neighborhood BBQ I was talking to a neighbor, a BC Hydro
Executive. I asked him how that renewable thing was doing. He laughed, then got serious.
If you really intend to adopt electric vehicles, he pointed out, you
had to face certain realities. For example, a home charging system for a Tesla requires 75 amp service. The average house is equipped with 100 amp service. On our small street (approximately
25 homes), the electrical infrastructure would be unable to carry more than three houses with a single Tesla, each. For even half the homes to have electric vehicles, the system would be wildly over-loaded.
This is the elephant in the room with electric vehicles. Our
residential infrastructure cannot bear the load. So as our genius
elected officials promote this nonsense, not only are we being urged to buy these things and replace our reliable, cheap generating systems with expensive, new windmills and solar cells,
but we will also have to renovate our entire delivery system! This latter “investment” will not be revealed until we’re so far down this dead end road that it will be presented with an ‘OOPS…!’ and a shrug.
If you want to argue with a green person over cars that are
eco-friendly, just read the following. Note: If you ARE a green
person, read it anyway. It’s enlightening.
Eric test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors and he writes, “For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
“Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran
on the battery. So, the range including the 9-gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles.
It will take you 4.5 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of
electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery.
The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned ,
so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh. 16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.
$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery.
Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine that gets only 32 mpg. $3.19 per gallon divided by 32 Mpg = $0.10 per mile.
The gasoline powered car costs about $25,000 while the Volt costs $46,000 plus. So the Canadian Government wants loyal Canadians not to do the math, but simply pay twice as much for a car, that costs more than seven times as much to run, and takes three times
longer to drive across the country.

  Overload the house power supply @100 amps because a Tesla uses 75 amps when recharging at night time — that’s without aircon, the dishwasher, tv, lights, computers and a big screen tv running for ONLY PART of the 1ohr recharging time — and that’s only with ONE electric car per household!
  
  They will have to at the minimum triple the power supply to every home with two electric cars.

    Thank you Yvette. I couldn’t be bothered going to the effort to point out the mind boggling stupidity of that original post but good news! The proud Texan, working for GM no less has pointed out its numerous flaws.
    
    I also agree with the Texan’s observation that it’s all too common for the conservative press to publish this nonsense. Somehow the economics (and engineering) of e-vehicles is adequate to make Tesla the most valued car manufacturer on the planet. By someone who met a bloke at a bbq with a modest grasp on reality, and a hit piece is born. Sheesh.
    
    For what it’s worth, Genesis just installed a new meter at my home to allow for half price (/kWh) charging of the EV in the garage. Pool pumps, dishwashers etc will now also be run after 9pm to maximise the advantage. Yes I understand it’s a peak load reduction strategy, which makes it all the more sensible.
    
    So perhaps, with the intellectual heft available to the readership of Kiwiblog we can do with a better takedown of the electric car industry and the economists/engineers at our own electrical supply industry than some bullshit story found doing the rounds on Facebook.
    
    As to the multitude of uptickers for that hit piece posted above. it’s almost as if here on the right we abandon all sense and any commitment to intellectual credibility as long as it a) provides proof of groupthink and b) pretends to diss the other side of the political spectrum. Bit embarrassing when business and science have to be added to the list of enemies of the right.

In an Auckland murder case, the victim is reported to be a physiotherapist from India.

New Zealand is reknown for the quality of its physiotherapists, with great specialist education honed by high demand in a sports loving nation.

We’ve got plenty of home-grown, home-educated physiotherapists of very high standard. In fact some of them have to compete for a living.

Why are physiotherapists from India, which lags far behind in modern physiotherapy education?

The victim also had some rather meaningless health qualification from the former polytechnic, AUT.

The essence of good immigration is bringing in highly skilled people we don’t have.

It’s similar to the computer courses run at small private institutions targeting foreign, mainly Indian students. Most of these finished the year’s course, and took the education immigration rort of residency, and then became land agents, electricity salesmen, petrol pumpers, retail salesmen …. anything but programmers.

The hate speech debate over the last week or so has contributed to a spate of accusations ranging from wokeism to Karenism, if that can now be said to be part of the modern day lexicon.
Putting aside the petty name-calling, the one thing that stood out for me has been the response of the PM and minister of justice to questions about what may or may not be caught in the net – a response that has received little attention from the media which, in itself, is a bit scary.
Both have responded with the facile bleat that they have no control over what decisions the courts may make and it is not their job to hypothesise what comments will be caught and what comments will not.
Well, a message to you both. I will type it slowly so you don’t get confused

It bloody well is your job and if you do not understand that then you are not fit for office.

Parliament makes the rules. Parliament decides what goes into legislation. The courts are there to make sense of it — work out parliament’s intention if they can.

It is a bit disconcerting when the pm and minister of justice express ignorance and say that really it is up to the courts to nut it out.

In related vein, it is not often that the judiciary intervenes in the legislative process. We saw it happen this week when the Chief Justice remonstrated with parliament over the verdict to be delivered in insanity cases. This came about because of a private members bill (Louise Upston, I think) seeking to change the verdict from not guilty on the grounds to insanity to “proven” but insane where the defence of insanity is successful.

Winkelman CJ thought it necessary to point out that in NZ law the crown is bound by the time honoured tradition of proving the act (called the actus reus) and the state of mind (mens rea). Without both, there cannot be a conviction. There is an irreconcilable contradiction to say that a charge is proven when the essence of criminal jurisprudence says that it isn’t.
The insanity defence is successful because people are sick, not because they are criminals. While it is understandable that the angst of victims needs to be appeased, the same applies to people who have a disease of the mind such that they do not know that what they are doing is wrong.

Louise Uptson should, perhaps, have had a word with the Minister of Health who, on one day, expressed frustration and, the next day, assured us that everything was under control and it all takes time as he tried to ferret out what happened to the $1.9 b that was tucked away for mental health rather than lambast a judge who simply pointed out the difficulty in explaining to a jury that they can decide that a charge is proven when it clearly isn’t —that is, of course, if you apply fundamental dictates of criminal law.

Maybe the Chief Justice should take the PM and Minister of Justice aside and explain how the system works.

  I think that it is a first for a Chief Justice and timely intervention. It seems like a third step following the SC’s decision to let the Ellis appeal continue after his death and the 3 strikes law be reviewed. Looking back to where it may have begun I can only think of Arthur Taylor’s plea to have a prisoner voting ban ruled as inconsistent with the Bora as the possible genesis.

  That’s how they effect silencing of views. The Left will have funded groups who will threaten you with legal action for what you say, and the average person won’t have the wherewithal to defend it. And so speech will be suppressed.
  
  It already happens with purely enacted legislation, where the police throw up their hands and toss it to the courts. Costs the police nothing cause they’re paid to be there anyway, costs the courts nothing, cause they’re paid to be there anyway. It just costs you to defend it, and you’ll never get the stigma removed, or costs paid

  Yvette, call me an old cynic, but I suspect that in 6 months time, the govt will suddenly announce that their extended, taxpayer funded, hui with Maori have ironed out ALL the wrinkles in He PuaPua, and there is no longer any need for discussion with the wider public.
  The new bill will then be rushed through under urgency, like the Maori Wards legislation.

Andrew Little.Who would want a failure like Andrew Little who overseen the biggest loss in Trade Union history of their members , stood for Labour in Elections three times and failed miserably and then was found out in fundraising for his Party when he became President.
When Elected as Leader of the opposition Party Labour he was the most disliked leader since ,Geoffrey Palmer and resigned his position through his lack of suitability with the voter 3 months before the 2017 Election and supported Jacinda Ardern into the job in which again he was a dismal failure , I could go on with other subjects of errors he has made but it could take all day.
So for Clare Trevett to be calling for failures to lead the National Party it confirms the opinion I have always held on her ability to be a Journalist.

Here is a question for the lawyers. Remember that rap singer who sang about wanting to rape John Key’s daughter? Would he be straight to jail under the new hate speech law or is “artistic expression” a get out of jail card.

Also IIRC not a single person on the left including the current PM criticised the guy.

The best strategy for journalists would be to bombard the PM with hypotheticals.

“If someone calls Don Brash an irrelevant oaf who should be cancelled” is that hate speech?

If I a say a member of the green party is an entitled twit who would take us back to the stone age “?

Let’s say an imam tells his congregation that girls who wear bikinis are sluts and evil?”

The thing is if the PM has NO IDEA about the answer to any of these questions then we have a problem. And based on what I have seen age has no idea. If she is pressed she will lash out.

  The money’s good, the work’s physical, and long spells at sea are balanced by breaks ashore.
  
  It’s a wonder that Polynesians’ ancient heritage of long-distance voyaging hasn’t seeded some sort of instinctive pull towards a seafarer’s life.
  
  Or perhaps it’s the fishing companies that are the problem. Cheap, docile labour from Asia must be attractive to them.

      However, I don’t think fishing as a career is promoted well.
      
      School careers advice has always been poor.
      
      If I were a fishing industry recruiter I’d be put up trophies and prizes for young grades in rugby and league, and hunt publicity among these young folk. Other possibilities: quay-side tours of ships for young men, with a change to talk with a fisherman; advice on fishing as a path to good pay and how to join the industry; and industry-sponsored and industry-promoting school prizes in rugby, league, boxing and wrestling, and for school pupils who have shown special resilience.

Disappeared from the news cycle but a few days ago I heard an OIA had found the Govt offered Rio Tinto some money in December after saying they were not going to give a subsidy to them and Grant Robertson when asked said it wasn’t a subsidy it was a transition payment. Being too definitive again?? A subsidy dressed up as a non subsidy, bit like a tax being a fee. Rio Tinto turned the subsidy down.

CAKE has nearly lost all hope. It looks like the terrorists won. It’s hard for me to understand the popularity of this government, but it seems unstoppable. I don’t really like National in any case – the centrist Labour lite nonsense is simply a slower walk down the wrong path.

However, if by some miracle National wins next election, this time it is absolutely imperative that they actually do something worthwhile, instead of sitting around for years scratching their arses.

The socialist institutions underpinning this government need to be crushed mercilessly.

Here’s a quick CAKE 4-point manifesto:

1. Local Government – is controlled nationwide by socialists. National should run candidates everywhere, on a back-to-basics platform. Candidates giving ratepayers the option of good value infrastructure spending, free of vanity projects and waste, needs to be offered.

2. Universities – should be corporatized, and told to make a profit after government subsidies. This process could be used to dramatically cut funding to the bogus subjects that exists solely to advance the woke agenda. Smash the socialists’ departments, and purge the far left from academia.

3. Media – privatise the lot. They may still hate National, but at least they will need to make a profit to survive. This may focus their thoughts more on market place necessities than socialist ideology.

4. Decentralise government – give it back to the people, Swiss style. Every tax and spending increase to be voted for at the Council level. Tax and spending pushed down to this local level.

The alternative is Venezuela…

After reading Professor Baker’s views, it has become clear to me that he is first a foremost a communist. His eco-fascism (he is an extreme climate fanatic), as well as far left economic views, make it clear that this “academic” is anything but neutral.

The consequence of these extreme views is that his proposals for combatting this nasty flu are downright crazy. For example, he wants our borders to be shut forever. This says more about his desire to centralise, as well as his need to control and have power over everything, than it does about finding coherent policies to address flu issues.

His fear mongering about this nasty flu seems to be solely in order to justify and advance his communist agenda.

Although I believe cancel culture is generally silly, perhaps in the case of Professor Baker it is justified, because he is a very dangerous man. He even caught Kiwiblog, who were advocating his totalitarian policies.

Down with Big Brother Baker!!!
