Launched in the UK, Our Decision Too is a direct democracy initiative.

We have now recruited more than 1,000 members, debated 55 issues in depth, have had more than 3,000 intelligent responses to the issues, and have generated patterns of members’ values that clearly show the sort of society we want. And this is just the start.

This week we are launching the project on its own bespoke website – Our Decision Too. The site uses various methods to include citizens in decision-making. Issues are discussed in a deliberative fashion rather than decided via simple polling. Democracy requires education, knowledge and reflection, not just blind allegiance to one or another anachronistic political party.

We include people from any and every background. All opinions are welcome. Nothing is censored, hidden, or withheld unless it is illegal or plainly offensive. Everyone’s views and the patterns of their choices are immediately available to all participants, and there are filters to enable ‘deep diving’ into the transparent data.

Our Decision Too demonstrates that direct, participatory democracy can be achieved right now. It provides a working example of how the many flaws in representative democracy as we know it today can be eliminated. The results show immediate, living patterns of people’s choices. It is free to use. It is a ‘social good’ website, and it is not monetised.

I have often wondered how a tech-led, direct democracy party could shape New Zealand’s political landscape. DPF, abandon the now-wet National mob and do this. I nominate you as community president 🙂

  Yes, and start with asking parents what is important for their children’s education and if they would like choice.
  I can tell you all now, primary school education is out of control and it is making its way into intermediate level.

    Currently the Media Pardy is making a big deal about a youngster in a headlock.( Fair enough).
    
    But every youngster leaving primary/intermediate who is functionally illiterate / innumerate is as much a failure / outrage as that headlock imagery .
    
    Where’s the Media / activist outrage at the ministry , teachers and systemic failure of our “education” system ?

      Those children are not little sweethearts and I heard a whisper that some are very violent and require physical restraint at times.

        A good friend of ours had her back broken by a 14 year old ‘boy’ at such a facility while she was teaching there. The attack was unprovoked and unexpected. She has been able to walk again after years of therapy, but very limited.
        Yea.. there might be two sides to these stories.
        Ultra violent little monsters some of them, yes they might have had a shit upbringing but they are still extremely dangerous.

        Pharma’s Stepdad taught in an intermediate school for years, he’s got stories (also being 6′ 2″ and male other teachers often called on him). I’ll give you one: student who my stepdad used to describe a “X thinks the rules are for everybody else” once picked up a soldering iron (old school ones, not new school induction tip) and randomly ran it down the back of another kids leg below the uniform shorts.

        I worked for a time as a corrections officer on the youth unit of a major NZ prison. The youths we dealt with were murders or violent offenders. Despite their obvious craving for older male attention and their apparent disdain of females the one thing that stood out was that their stature didn’t match their maturity. On paper they were youths in reality taking them on in a violent testosterone fueled situation was a nightmare. Sitting at home watching those workers trying to deal with a “ child” that’s probably ADHD as well as confused and angry about being let down by a dysfunctional family but 100 kg and 180cm tall doesn’t come close to giving anyone the right to judge. The workers are being let down as much as the children by lack of training low pay and low job esteem

      That was a daily occurrence when I went to school.
      
      This generation of losers should have tried school in the 90s, where you had to run the gauntlet through the quad without getting “the beats” and or having your lunch stolen by a 14 year old polynesian with a beard and then climb 6 flights of stairs, dodging spit from the 7th formers standing at the top. I still remember the warning on my first day – never touch the handrail!
      
      But we thought we were lucky because we didnt get the cane!

        The headlock was never necessary.
        
        The children shown in State Care were not there for punishment… they were there to be kept safe under State Care because their homes were unsafe.
        
        There is never any excuse to hurt a child whilst restraining him/her.

        Maggy I would hazard a guess that you have never had to restrain an aggressive and potentially violent young person.
        
        Before you so openly criticise someone who has had to do this I suggest you try to walk a mile in their shoes.
        
        I have seen children who are sub teenagers physically damage adults with violent actions and I have also seen them damage themselves badly when unrestrained.
        
        What we should be asking ourselves as a nation is why this is happening. What have we done to create such children and maybe dealing with them will become less of an issue.

        While the MMA style leg shoot, and the headlock and twist to the ground are both perhaps inappropriate restraints;
        ….We see a very selective editing that starts only as the ‘child’ is being taken down.
        We have no context at all
        The so-called child is nearly the same size as the staff.
        We dont know whether there was prolonged ‘asking’, ‘telling’, before the final ‘making’.
        Some of these children are in men’s bodies.
        Some of these children can be violent and dangerous.
        Did they spit on staff, assault someone previously, or had they been kicking holes in walls or destroying property? All these things do happen, and we don’t know.
        
        Certainly there are other ways to restrain, but I will never say that restraint isn’t needed.
        Also, more technical and perhaps ‘gentle’ ways to restrain are harder and perhaps more time consuming or even risky to apply (finger locks, or joint manipulations).
        
        We are sometimes making it hard for staff to act to take control in ANY instance when we examine and get outraged over videos like that.
        
        Consider the corrections staff watching a prisoner being stabbed to death since they needed a certain staff ratio be able to act to even save a life.
        
        I actually like the idea that there are some lines SOMEWHERE in society, and when you butt heads with someone which represents authority, you eventually find a hard stop.
        If some little violent yobo is spitting on you and calling you a C–t, and may have just performed some serious breach of conduct – then WHAM. You are taken down.
        And perhaps if they learn it early in life that you can’t walk around with a huge chip on the shoulder, it might even help them.
        
        Maybe.
        
        I will hazard a bet the video didn’t start with a nice young man asking politely if he was allowed to go to the toilet, and then unprovoked he was slammed down by staff.
        
        We just don’t know any details here, and I am more worried about NZ society only becoming even more limp and consequence free for those that have no respect for anything.

        But probably not at the worst extremes.
        
        but unlike many of us here I have met and worked with folks who deal daily with mentally disturbed and violent men in hospital and prison settings.
        
        I know there are techniques that can be employed to try and calm someone and there are means to restrain someone safely.
        
        But a lot of my concern is what has led up to the violent outburst.
        
        Young physical youths need space and activity and a structured routine and decent male role-models.
        
        Confining large young boys indoors with under-qualified Youth workers is a recipe for disaster.

        Hi Maggy. Not seeking to debate with you here but there are two aspects that you raise that need clarification.
        
        Firstly you refer to people you know dealing with young men. They are an entirely different species that sub teen or even young teenagers. They have learned a few lessons and one is to not take on authority when authority is capable of smacking you in the mouth … most of the time. Youngsters still believe that, as mummy says, they can do anything and have not learned what repercussions are. Reason and threat seldom work with this type of nutjob.
        
        Secondly, you mention an idealistic location for this to occur in. That place does not exist so these poor, and possibly inadequately trained staff members, are faced with dealing with these kids within the environment that they have. I have also met some of these people and I would not trade places for quids and certainly not for the pittance that they currently are paid.
        
        I have seen a substantial 12 year old knock a full grown male unconcious with one hit. Only rapid action stopped the kicks that were on their way to his head. So as far as I am concerned, in a similar situation, I believe an over reaction is the best methodology than some “calming chat”.

      Where’s the outrage from parents and future employers of educational output with regard to the woke crap these teachers have filled the heads of kids in their charge with?
      If I was an employer of such output and the situation arose whereby an employee informed me that this week it was going to be female and the following that being informed that it wanted to be a male again and whilst being a male applied for maternity leave, it would be down the road. Unfortunately, these days down the road issues have been taken out of the employer’s hands and that’s another issue in itself.
      Geez, I’m glad I’m retired.

  New Zealander wouldn’t understand the in’s and out’s of a direct democracy. In the world there is only one direct democracy that works and this is in Switzerland. And look how wealthy Switzerland is, but there are also a lots of rules and laws, it is very much regulated. I have been brought up in this country and this system is hard to copy and it would take many generation to switch to a such complicated system, not even all the Swiss understands their own system. Plus it’s very much based on the deep embedded culture of the Swiss people and the Kiwis are far away from this necessary culture.

The public is fed up and the complaint line is running hot, with Speaker Trevor Mallard receiving a influx of messages about MP’s behavior.
This is the pot calling the kettle when it comes from Trevor Mallard as he obviously thinks the public have got short memories of the past , he has bullied and assaulted another MP in the past at Parliament, he has spewed unfounded and libelous lies about a staffer that cost the taxpayer over $350,000 with this case not finished in the Courts yet as the complainant seeks more damages.
This excuse for a human being has been a absolute disgrace as Speaker of the House with his childish and immature way he controls Parliament and yet has the gaul to call others out for less than the arrogance he has showed over the years.
Parliaments oldest MP says he is sick of the child’s play so where was he when the interns made a complaint of serious sexual abuse from a Senior Staffer working out of the Prime Ministers office, the silence was deafening.

Every time I read something on Stuff I get a pathetic begging for money call. They tell me they are seeking “diversity” of voices and that they believe in “freedom of speech”. Those are two deliberate lies. They block perfectly safe and sound speech when it does not suit their own particular view of the world. There is no “freedom” about Stuff’s speech. In response to letters I have written I have been told “we do not cover that subject”.

Meanwhile they run a biased, puerile article by some clearly life-inexperienced student challenging Seymour, Collins and the many of the rest of us about “hate speech”. He claims:

“It is speech which drives fear into communities, leads to assaults on minority groups and toys with the livelihoods of innocent families. It is inexcusable and cruel”.

“There is a clear problem, white supremacy”

“It’s a problem that led to a horrendous terror attack in Christchurch that has scarred New Zealand”.

To claim by inference that hate speech laws would have stopped the CHCH situation is plainly absurd, lacks any credibility and is in itself dangerous. Knowing the full force of the law for murder would come down on his head did not stop the shooter – an obscure and ill-defined piece of legislation certainly would not achieve it.

Apparently “white supremacy” is the problem. Oh, really?? Changing the law can fix such attitudes even if they do exist? Thought police next?

The writers definition of hate speech – “it is speech which drives fear into communities….” is already covered by existing legislation.

So, no Stuff beg all you like, you will not get a donation from me. Producing drivel doesn’t cut the mustard. Anyway you already “stole” from me by dipping into the taxpayer’s pocket. Enough is enough.

      Stuff conveniently forgetting that one incident of ‘hate speech’ against the Christchurch Mosque was committed by a non European. The media made much of the initial story of hate speech until they discovered that the offender had a Maori name. Then they become disinterested. Similar to much of agenda of the woke left, their concern was not with the victim. Their true motivation is their own agenda and the opportunity that these incidents provide to push it. Namely, in this case ‘white supremacy’ and the opportunity to bash persons of European descent. The left in NZ seem to want to adopt the causes of America where white supremacy can be an issue. Yet, if you were on a search for bald, fisting waving white supremacists with Nazi tattoos in NZ you would be lucky to drag up a handful who would be well and truly hiding under the bed in fear and most likely be suffering mental health issues.

        “White supremacy” isn’t gangs of skinheads marching through the streets – that is just the connotation they wish to invoke by the phrase. Rather, what they actually mean when they say “White supremacy” (i.e. wanting to maintain what is a proven and successful European/Anglo-based society and upholding its European/Anglo values and institutions) is frankly the only answer to the country’s rapid deterioration into a third-rate multicultural dump characterised by mediocrity, unexceptionalism and ideological totalitarianism.     Ardern’s $105M must be unlawful too as I believe there are requirements attached about the use of Maori etc. Those requirements would be in contravention of the Bill of Rights (NZ).
    
    Once again the PM of NZ has apparently substituted her law for ours.

    No doubt Stuff is positioning themselves for future “grants” as they seem incapable of adapting to actually be financially sustainable, unlike other media companies who are pivoting and finding new ways of engaging, and (from what I understand) with a reasonably substantial amount of money to be paid to Nine Entertainment still, they’ll want to be ensuring that all revenue options are open.
    
    Of course to position themselves appropriately they need to have some angle and that appears to be “most-woke” and “defending the downtrodden”.

We have the PM in question time make a derogatory comment towards Judith Collins, and not reprimanded by the speaker, then Robertson uses his time during debates to again ridicule National.
Seems they are spending a lot of energy on trying to undermine the National Party, so suspect they have started the deflection for Willie Jacksons announcement today on He Paupau.
If you add the wasteful spend by Megan Woods on housing through media outlets (@$5Million), and yesterday’s revelation that millions has been spent on water reform advertising to spin the government’s position in the face of local body opposition, you get the sense that the crap is about to hit the fan.
The above coupled with the shambolic hate speech law introduction, and the fact the Covid vaccination programme is an absolute cock-up they sure as hell don’t have much going for them at present; other than a very compliant MSM to 1) run critical National Party pieces daily & 2) promote any inane article about their perceived greatness in our PM.
I’m firmly of the view its time for National and ACT to take the gloves off and start getting stuck in to these muppets. If during interviews such as Ms Ferguson on RNZ where she tries to change the agenda, then push back really hard and embarrass her as being biased and a threat to democracy.

I have a friend, who is severely immune compromised, was told by his GP to go to the local Covid immunisation location. Arriving in his car, he was met by a “lovely Maori lady” who asked if he had an appointment. He explained that he was told by his GP to come down. “Sorry without an appointment we cannot provide a vaccine today”.
So he asked since he was here could he make an appointment for tomorrow, the answer?

“No you can’t, because we’re only looking after our own at the moment, unless you’re Maori we cannot provide any vaccines”

This is New Zealand now

      Of course there will be a need for boosters – just like with flu jabs.
      
      Some viruses are very stable and mutate very slowly (eg. Smallpox). Some mutate fast like flus and various cononaviruses.
      
      Some vaccines have wide coverage (again: smallpox – one vaccine covers a range of cow pox, monkey pox, small pox etc). Indeed, the smallpox vaccine itself is not really a smallpox vaccine instead it is actually an infection with a different virus called vaccinia. Other vaccines (flu again) have very narrow coverage – hence the recipe changes every year.
      
      Guess which group the Sars-cov-2 virus fits into?

  Got to love these “I have a friend” stories.
  I booked last Thursday for my second covid shot and was given an appointment for 1.30 pm Monday and told I would receive a text confirmation.
  No text arrived but I went anyway because I don’t mind a fight. The first person I spoke to on the way in was “lovely Maori lady,” when I told her the story she pointed to a man “over there” that I couldn’t see, and said I should tell him. When I gave her the details of the appointment she shook her head in agreement that things were not up to scratch.
  I joined the queue with its 2 metre spacings, got asked my name, told them the story, and was directed to the desk where the appointment was checked and confirmed. Things fell into place.

    I have no doubt that most people will get the vaccine without any concern about their race. However I do know this government wants to set up a separate Maori Health Authority. So presumably that means that Maori people will be treated differently? That authority will only treat Maori people?
    
    I just don’t think that’s right. Again no one would countenance a separate hospital, for example, reserved entirely for white people. No one would accept that.
    
    So I think these race-based initiatives are very disturbing and very wrong. What do you think?

      Credible, with all the confusion over groups and priorities that someone in administration somewhere gives dud advice ‘Sorry, Maori first’.
      It is all par for the course with contriving ‘equal’ outcomes and assigning priority.
      It doesn’t have to mean it was policy across NZ, but it might have been that persons -understanding- of policy in that tent at that time.
      
      From the NZ Herald on 1st June:
      
      “Māori aged 50-64 are getting vaccinated by health providers, even though the Government rejected expert advice for them to be prioritised….
      ….Instead, Cabinet agreed to give 40,000 vaccine doses to Māori and Pacific health providers for group 2 for older Māori and Pasifika cared for by whānau – though Cabinet was advised to do this as well as prioritise those aged 50-64.”
      
      So I do expect those vaccines given to Maori health providers are being used for Maori, and that some people in the system therefore might reject the Govt position and say ‘for our people first’. There has been an emotive appeal in media and some MPs for this very thing being those manipulated facts around lower life expectancy and greater vulnerability based on how brown you are.
      
      Consider that, Brian, before implying it can’t be true.

  yossarian, I just received an invite to make an appt for the vaccine. The offer included people 65 years and over, younger people with health conditions, and… Maori and Pacific kaumātua and their whānau.
  And with no age limits on those whanau, I take that as an invite to perfectly healthy young Maori or Pacific Islanders to role up and qualify for a jab.
  Even though the country could run out of vaccines next week, and only 10% of the population have had two jabs. Including some front line workers and people like your compromised friend.

I have a bit of money in an AMP Kiwisaver account, fixed into a conservative fund because of my age. I frequently receive emails from Mr Jeff Ruscoe of AMP telling me how proud he is that AMP only invests in what he terms ‘sustainable’ enterprises that will ‘help save the planet’. Meanwhile month by month my AMP Kiwisaver balance drops in value. Mr Ruscoe and others if his ilk should realise that, sitting on the fat and no doubt ever increasing salaries as they do, their job is to make money for me by investing in legal and profitable enterprises. Not in pointless virtue signaling at my expense with my dwindling Kiwisaver investment.

Why is the most open and transparent government New Zealand has ever seen blocking the Greens, Act and National calling Treasury and the Reserve Bank giving a briefing on house prices?

Labour Party MPs are blocking a select committee from looking at how top officials forecast house prices, despite a cross-party group of Green, National and ACT MPs supporting the idea.

Green MP Chlöe Swarbrick motioned for Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Committee to get a briefing from Treasury and the Reserve Bank on how the two organisations forecast house prices.

The two forecasts are very influential in Government, as Treasury’s forecasts are used by ministers to inform their policies on housing affordability, and the Reserve Bank’s forecast informs how it sets interest rates. Forecasts have been incredibly wrong in recent years, most notably when they forecast a massive collapse in prices during the pandemic.

Both organisations are now forecasting house price growth to come to a screeching halt as a result of the Government’s recent policy changes, although some analysts aren’t so sure.

This is the second time that such a motion has been blocked – Swarbrick tried last week too, but that was also voted down. She promised to try again each week the committee is sitting until Labour agrees to a briefing.

    All you have to do is review the price increases on timber over the past 3 months and factor that into the new builds coming on stream in 6-8 months.
    
    New builds go up, older homes follow immediately.
    
    Then add in a shortage of builders, a shortage of affordable sections and even a shortage of overpriced m,aterial and you don’t need to work for Treasury to realise that the forecast is pure fantasy.

  The people would be really worried to hear a reasonable view of the price rises expected.
  Our modest weekly shopping is 25% up from a year ago. It will probably be more in the next 12 months. Housing prices are tied up too with global money supply and the USA is reporting a 25% rise in their house prises over the last year. Forget bubbles, they are play toys. Inflation has arrived as expected.
  
  It took years of hardship and applied nous to get us out of Labour’s wage/price spiral they begun in the 1970’s. There is no one in their present govt who has any understanding of public finance beyond the uni cafe level.
  
  They need to get out now before it rapidly worsens. The PM will be like a headless chicken then as the stress of not knowing what she has to face next could be unbearable. Judith has got strength and wisdom to call on those who can help her bring this fiscal monster under control.
  
  The bomb fuse has been lit. If not stopped in time Heaven Help New Zealand.

      I’m not going to entertain this untimely footling war against Muldoon. He effectively succeeded, set NZ up with foreign exchange for the future and the opportunity for Douglas to float the NZD. A good Captain at the tiller in his time, as was Douglas subsequently. It matters little now what others say or remember. These are times when truth is replaced with its opposite and people expect irrationally to make rational decisions on those substitutions.
      
      Economic medicine is some of the most unpleasant. That’s why it’s smart to not copy AOC’s crazy monetary theories. It should be obvious that COVID lockdown was going to cause commercial havoc. We are now effectively importing inflation and cannot avoid it. We add to with the govt’s borrow and spend largess. Wages and prices will have to be restrained. It’s only now a matter of when.

        I like the way you always respond (not just to me) rationally, calmly; not angrily. You always “play the ball, not the man”, and never use foul language. You are someone it is possible to engage with.
        
        That being said, responding to your first paragraph, I have shown that “economic historians” disagree with you, yet you continue to have us believe that Muldoon essentially “saved us”, when that is simply not true.
        
        You continue to fail to acknowledge this excerpt from my post on 16 June: “Between 1973 and 1984, New Zealand governments were overwhelmed by a group of inter-related economic crises, including two serious supply shocks (the oil crises), rising inflation, and increasing unemployment. Robert Muldoon, the National Party (conservative) prime minister between 1975 and 1984, pursued increasingly erratic macroeconomic policies. […].”
        
        You continue to blame the wage-price spiral on Labour, when it would have occurred even if National had won the 1972 election. With Muldoon continuing as Finance Minister, it would arguably have been worse.
        
        If you read your 8:58AM comment again, you will see that the comment I excerpted, in my 10:05AM response, actually stands alone. It was not relevant to what you were saying, and need not have been said, especially given that inflation has not (yet) “arrived as expected.” That was totally hyperbolic. The fact that you inserted the excerpted comment, could reasonably be interpreted as you, once again, taking another opportunity to defend “your hero” of his actions taken 40 years ago! I could not let you get away with that.
        
        I’m not going to entertain this untimely footling war against Muldoon.
        
        Then might I suggest you cease praising the man’s handling of our economy. It was shambolic, and it was 40-45 years ago! The wage-price spiral back then, and how it was supposedly handled, is not relevant to today, except as history. In that regard, do you seriously think we’re going to have another wage-price freeze, for example, in the near future?
        
        Muldoon had a number of good points, as have all of us, but economic management was not one of them.

        I was one of Muldoon’s candidate team in 1975 and had the privilege of attending lectures by him on economic history both globally and NZ. I had done some economics and was amazed at his lucid understanding. He was a delight to listen too.
        
        By election 1975 it was evident economic strife was afoot as the Arbitration Court were being generous in making compulsory wage orders following union pressure. The oil shocks didn’t help. There were also foreign speculators taking positions against our tied dollar. Sometimes they were rewarded with a devaluation.
        
        We had a firm view that prices were out of control particularly relative to our ability to cover the foreign exchange pressures they created. An extra dollar in the pay packet effectively required a matching foreign one or exports to create it. Labour had been a bit “nice” too and seemed to be generous but were too generous at that time. Price creep was certainly underway and was becoming worryingly unstoppable.
        
        Muldoon was concerned that we might not be able to import food. The massive forced change in imported oil prices caused severe distress and restraints had to be enforced. It was cars or food time.
        
        Others may argue about the details from diverse economic schools. We can’t do a repeat run to test for best practice. I believe Muldoon as person of integrity did as best he knew how and in time the prices were brought under control. Ministers of finance are not always that successful. Think Big provided the foreign exchange certainty which helped future growth.
        
        That’s 46 years ago. I shudder to think what is underway at present by our amateur govt. Robertson seems to have go his hands on the Reserve Bank and excess money creation is pushing up prices. I sure they don’t understand yet what they have done. It’s a prime duty of govt to care and that means being capable of it, not discovering after the fact that they or their sycophantic advisers did not understand.
        The quicker this govt is returned to more able hands the better.
        I cannot answer all your criticisms. I will maintain my opinion on Muldoon–many hate him.
        Truly I am concerned that a wage/price spiral is now underway.

        I recall, back in late-2017, early-2018, people moaning that Grant Robertson wasn’t “Left” enough; that he was basically same ol’, same ol’, more or less continuing the neo-con economic stance started by the traitorous Lange / Douglas government.
        
        I think what you’re really saying is that his economic / Treasury advisors are not up to the task. I refuse to believe that. As has always been the case, it comes down to the “contest of ideas”. Right now, the Left are in the ascendancy, but, as we all know only too well, that won’t always be the case.
        
        Having said that, it disappoints me that Kiwibloggers, generally, refuse to acknowledge that, had there not been a change of government in 2017, that the COVID crisis would have been handled any differently; that Steven Joyce would not have implemented something that was at least pretty much the same as the wage subsidy scheme; that, consequently, we would still be in huge debt (that would have to be dealt with at some point in the future); that, also, given that a Bill English government would have had the same advisors as the current government, that it, too, would have locked us down in late-March 2020.
        
        Truly I am concerned that a wage/price spiral is now underway.
        
        I haven’t seen official evidence of that yet, but, given the complete upheaval that Douglas imposed upon us, a “Muldoon-style” wage-price freeze, implemented by an economically-conservative Finance Minister like “Robbo”, seems to me to be extremely unlikely. I suspect it will be dealt with somewhat differently.

    Possibly because National is in Opposition. They’re not the Government and as such, have no responsibility for all the cock-ups going on around the place. On the other hand, the issues Collins has told MP’s to pull their heads in over are internal issues, and they should remain internal issues. Parliament is a very ego-driven environment, but MP’s, especially Opposition MP’s who think their ego is more important than the party need to be told to pull their heads in.
    
    Having seen her two predecessors in the National leadership ridiculed and undermined by leaks to “friendly” journalists, Collins has put her foot down, and fair enough. National MP’s need to understand that journalists are NOT their friends, and will stab you in the back, journalistically speaking, as soon as you are no longer useful to them.

  So a Member of Parliament wants public servants to explain how they do their forecasts. And now that she’s asked, quite a few more MPs would like to understand it too.
  Sounds extremely straight forward to me. MPs should understand how these things are determined, in order to do the job we pay them for, as our representatives, of holding the government to account.
  If the officials are concerned that it is not suitable for a select committee meeting, a seminar for those interested could be organised at a convenient time. There might be other MPs who would like understanding too.
  At least, that is what an open and transparent government would do. That is what we have, isn’t it?

What a smug prick Robertson is. For a bloke that did A LOT of backstabbing in the period between Clark and the Blairite there was hypocrisy by the spades in that speech made last night.

Now i’m not Bill English’s no1 supporter however would English have made a similar speech or would he stuck to the task of hand of managing the economy and being a PM in waiting. It’s a rhetorical question.

I know that sports teams use similar events as motivation therefore Collins and Reti should be forcing every SINGLE National MP to watch the whole speech word for word. Afterwards if they ain’t embarrassed, angry and determined to prove the assholes wrong then fuck them off to woke corporate jobs where they can ‘collect that cheque’ .

This should be the turning point.

  I saw the results of ehnonationalism in Bosnia (with the NZ Army in 1995) and Rwanda (with UNHCR) at first hand. Is this the future Ardern wants for New Zealand? We are heading for catastrophe under this government. It’s not too late to think again.

ACC is a worker’s compensation fund – paid into by workers who are paid out when suffering misfortune. The ACC is not a great big pot of money available for general use – i.e. in this case for people who are not workers.

Treasury are exactly right in their assessment and recommendations and is exactly ‘fit-for-purpose’ in this matter.

It’s like me rocking up to Auckland zoo and demanding they house and care for my ten cats – for the sole reason that the zoo already takes care of animals.

No, no, no.

If FIANZ member Abdur Razzaq thinks all people should be compensated by taxpayers when they suffer misfortune – then he is free to take his case to Parliament and the taxpayer and see how far he gets with it.

  Swifty…I had a row with my lovely cousin over just this. She thought it was terrible that ACC didn’t ‘pay out’ or ‘enough’, to victims. Having worked for ACC for many years I told her that of course it would’ve ‘paid out’ those who qualified…injured persons on NZ soil. If they were deceased tax-paying earners then dependents are the de facto receivers of earnings-related compo. There is no bar to also receiving private insurance monies if that was the case too. But rules is rules and if personal injury cannot be proven then you are not covered, just for being in the vicinity. And if income was undeclared then a minimum rate is calculated. She told me that as it was some years since I worked there things might’ve changed. Not without laws being changed I said..and a huff descended. Lol.

Eggactly: Egg grade sizes – Farmer Brown.
All eggs comply with the NZ egg standards and grades set by the Egg Producers Federation of NZ Code of Practice 2002.
Eggs must equal or exceed the minimum weight for each grade as listed below.
Egg Size:
Medium (Size 6) 53g minimum weight per egg
Large (Size 7) 62g minimum weight per egg
Jumbo (Size 8) 68g minimum weight per egg
So why are some cartons now showing 408 gms Net Weight (Size 8) and 372 gms Net Weight (Size 7)
This means that every time there is one (or more) eggs larger than 68 gms in a Size 8 carton – some eggs do not equal or exceed the minimum weight for their grade. Therefore they are not all Size 8 eggs.
(No I have not weighed a carton to check the net weight.)
Not the crime of the century but, from my observation, another case of gradual creep.
That ignores the fact that a 68 gm egg is certainly not a JUMBO sized egg.

  Stating the NET weight just means they’re telling you the minimum weight of the carton is 408gms based on the requirement that the minimum egg size is 68gms.
  
  If one egg is larger than 68gms, then the weight of the carton will be larger than 408gms. They don’t go about mixing and matching egg sizes to achieve a carton weight of exactly 408gms.

    So some eggs do not met the stated standard.
    Larger weight eggs are much less common now than they were even 6 months ago.

    Older birds tend to produce larger eggs (they’ve been bored out a bit) and less frequently and are more likely to produce double yolks.

NZ was close to a black out last night. Only an old diesel generator saved us from a shivering, quivering night.

Low lake levels, no wind, no sun and heavy demand from heaters and ‘kaboom’ we need good ole fossil fuels to save us again. Even stoking Huntly up to full bore with imported coal couldnt keep the lights on.

Get ready folks – the stupid greens and the warmists are guaranteeing blackouts and soon.

    This year we have replaced our old wood burner with a multi fuel fire in which we can burn – wait for it, wait for it – coal! (No-one dob us in to the almighty government, please. We do not live in an urban setting)
    The coal comes in fibre bags and the information states that it is supplied by Solid Energy NZ.
    So would this be coal mined in NZ, or imported from somewhere else such as Indonesia?
    If NZ how come it is ok to mine coal for some purposes and not for others?
    I do not understand why we are importing coal.
    If NZ has to use coal for whatever purpose, why are we importing rough stuff from Indonesia which is more costly and dirty.
    Is it just to placate the Green extremists?

  Transpower have the peak last night at 6616MW at 18:20. To this has to be added off grid generation, like the small hydros. I haven’t seen the full data yet, but again it looks like diesel was generating more than wind.
  I believe the “diesel” generator at Huntly is Unit 6 – a 50MW gas turbine. It is a peaker, normally running on gas and it runs that way quite often. It would be dual firing, so with the gas shortage, they ran it on the diesel.

    The gas turbines are called open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs).
    
    They are basically jet engines that spin a generator instead of a fan on a jet plane.
    
    They can be rigged for various fuels: gas, diesel, kero…
    
    They’re the most expensive form of generation due to higher fuel costs and higher maintenance costs.

  I’ve spent many years working with families and the differing ways they deal with money make an enormous difference to the family’s wealth.
  
  The fiscal education that should form the basis of a family’s life seems to be disappearing by the day and being replaced by a requirement that the state meet any shortfall.
  
  In my younger days, many of us took part time jobs to bolster our income while saving for a house or a trip or whatever. Don’t see a lot of that these days.

    In 1959, if my memory is accurate, he made a speech on proposed tax changes. At the time average income in the USA was about $2,500 / year.
    Nelson, being a Rockefeller as he was, came out with the glorious line “Let’s look at this from the point of view of the average family man earning $100,000 /year”.

  Flavour profile is not the same as flavour. Flavour profile describes the 5 “tastes” – sweet, sour, salty, spicy, umami – while flavour simply describes what one food item tastes like e.g. strawberry, vanilla or beef.

Imagine having bought a luxury Apartment off the plans nearly 4 years back, and even though it was completed months ago but already yonks behind schedule, not being able to move in because they are constantly being told by the Developers that they are STILL waiting for a Code-of-Compliance.

Such is the anguish of one of the poor girls from tennis, almost in tears, who now wishes they’d never heard of the Alexandra Park Development.

  There are apartments being built in Onehunga and a long way from completion. I’m pretty sure most of them were sold five years ago.
  In Wellington the BNZ built a high rise steel framed building at 1 Willis St. that took ten years to build because of the rambunctious Boiler Makers Union who erected the steel. It was finally completed in 1984 when they were offered all sorts of incentives and freebies, including a free colour TV each.w
  As a consequence all the high rise in Wellington was concrete for years after that.

Unfortunately, yesterday, it was brought to our attention that some things are happening within the State care system that shouldn’t be. I was saddened, disappointed, and angry at what I witnessed on that video yesterday. I had the opportunity to talk to the Minister in the Social Services and Community Committee this morning, where he stated he was not there to defend the indefensible. I understand that, but the buck stops somewhere, and does he realise that he is in charge of what he is saying is indefensible?

What is going to happen if the kooks get their way.

Immediate effect is the reduction of agriculture and the inability to grow enough to feed the population .
Why?
Well, it takes a lot of work to work soil up sufficiently to plant seed.
Ploughing, rotary hoeing, discing, harrowing, cambridge rolling and drilling all takes tractors.
And tractors use Diesel.
And finally when the crop is harvested it takes more and to transport the crop to storage even more.
No fuel means no food.
Trucks will be unable to transport food to supermarkets and shops or to railheads so trains can.
And the trains will have to run on renewable power so its going to have to be sunny and windy.
And every-ones going to have electric cars. Plug it in at work and plug it in at home so the baseload for power during the day and night will be high
At night how will the baseload to cover all the house power load be generated?
Currently we have 5 million 10 years time probably 6-8 million all wanting the same standard of life currently enjoyed but with no more hydroelectric or gas/thermal/coal power stations.
Electric cars:
Claims of 400 kms range made.
At night in the rain in hilly territory ?
Hybrids:
Better but still not as efficient or effective as petrol power.
International trade:
A no goer.
Wind powered ships? 8-10 times the voyage length for 1/100th of the cargo.
So we end up on the bones of our collective arses at the end of the world in a primitive pastoral society.
Small villages, small houses, horse drawn machinery, coal fired smithies, little or no contact with the outside world that would be thanks to population pressure in far worse condition than us.
Modern highways would deteriorate back into dirt roads with no machinery to maintain them..
Power and telephone lines would fail.
No internet or TV maybe radio would survive.
No aviation no international or internal travel by air.
Bridges failing road maintenance reduced to the roadman and a length of road to look after.
Slips.
Villages without a power source
Iron sands only source of iron/steel

Do you miss Donald Trump? Apart from his diehard supporters, there’s not many who’d admit to it.

Except that in newsrooms across America and beyond, there are those who are nursing serious nostalgia. That’s not so much because they have hidden sympathies for the 45th President, but because he was amazing for traffic.

In journalistic parlance, traffic (or ‘traf’) is nothing to do with transport policy, but rather, it refers to the level of readership, viewership and online clicks. And there’s no denying that Donald Trump was great for driving up the consumption of news.

Since he’s been gone, there’s been a widespread slump. The figures are presented in a piece for Axios by Neal Rothschild and Sara Fischer.

They divide up the various American news outlets into five ideological categories: Far Left, Left-leaning, Mainstream, Right-leaning and Far Right. Comparing the final few months of the Trump presidency with the first few months of Biden presidency they found a 27.3% drop in traffic for Far Left news outlets. Among Left-leaning and Mainstream outlets, the drop was smaller — 16.7% and 18.3%.

Those rating chart are brutal.

    It may be that something pops up in the future, but that’s another deal. And it wouldn’t be a surprise given how rabid Vance and James are. As I said in my initial post, James campaigned for AG by saying she was going to lock Trump up! This before having any evidence of any wrongdoing. I have little confidence that anything she or Vance does, or comes up with, will be anything more than a part of some political vendetta.

Now I am no expert on Water but breaking up Councils rights on their constituents on water and merging them into Three large identities could lead to the rest of New Zealand paying a portion of Auckland s rate payers water fees.

The great national conversation on a Capital Gains Tax massively floundered without the Government actually stating a position, which in any exchange of ideas would seem to be a basic requirement – and just a simple matter courtesy and honesty – for any real conversation to take place.

Now we are bogged down a bit with a national conversation on “hate speech” with the Government again unable or unwilling to offer a definition of what is being talked about it.
And just, “you will recognise it when you see it” of course is similar to the Christchurch Call – measures that deal with an offence after it has happened, rather than anything that stops the issue from happening to begin with.

Next up is a national conversation on He Puapua, with Maori to apparently be consulted before the rest of New Zealand – surely a dis-unifying approach to a matter of unity.
It will be interesting to see if the Government has yet learnt that a genuine conversation requires the initiating side to present a defined position to discuss.

    She told me it was far and away the the best job she ever had.
    (She’d come a long way from when I took the kids to California when she was about 13 & she said visiting Yosemite was the worst day of the holiday)
    Problem was it was underfunded, salaries were poor and then funding was slashed.

  Criminals are cowards. They look for weakness and vulnerability (or in their thought patterns: opportunity).
  
  When the cops become pussified, the crims see more opportunity and less down sides and are thus emboldened.
  
  It is no surprise to me at all that as the cops abdicate their role as the “top dogs” in the violence pyramid, we’re seeing an upsurge in criminal behaviour.
  
  It is the threat of being reigned in by the police that causes the worst amongst us to curb their desires.
  
  That is your jobs cops: you are supposed to have the state sponsored monopoly on violence to cause other players to back down.
  
  When the cops stop doing what they are supposed to, the scummy crims come out of the woodwork and prey on society.
  
  The upsurge in violence and sexual assaults etc in Wellington, Auckland and Chch (heck, everywhere) will continue until the cops shelve this stupid wokeness and reengage with their true role in society.
  
  The alternative – which is what they are trying and is failing – is to be kind to crims and hope that the crims will respond with kindness. Nope, they will not. As I said: crims are not wired with empathy and compassion – they just look for opportunity which they now see in abundance.

      The first whites to turn up here were Tasman etc in 1642 (380 years ago). They quite likely left some genetic material.
      
      We are also told that there was a lot of back and forth traffic from NZ to the home islands, so the Polynesian genetics was also probably getting diluted by Europeans visiting the Polynesian Islands.
      
      That means that when Cook and the whalers and sealers arrived, there would already have been a European component.
      
      At 20 years per generation there have been about 13 generations – long enough for there to be people who are 1/8000 Maori. But hang a bit of pounamu around their neck and it’s off to med school.

        Tasman’s crew didn’t get a chance to intermingle with Maori. There was a brief battle then Tasman sailed off.
        
        It’s unlikely there was any two-traffic between Maori and the Pacific Islands after the Europeans arrived in the Pacific and before Cook reached NZ. Maori had lost the skill of ocean navigation long before that.

        Intermingling from 1760’s at earliest, if British or French sailors knocked up any locals.
        Certainly by the 1820s many sealers and traders had Maori wives.
        Earlier genetic mixing not historically known. As already noted, Tasman never even landed here.
        And 2 way travel to Haiwaiki had ended long before Cook’s time. That is why the comparatively close Chatham Islands were unknown to Maori, despite being settled by archaic East Polynesians and presumably from NZ. (See Mike King: Moriori – a people redioscovered).
        
        Interesting to note the Tahitian priest travelling with Cook concluded correctly that 2 way travel ended long ago, since he pointed out there were no chickens in the Maori villages, like seen in the islands. He pointed this out to Cook.
        Cook made some very sensible observations at the time as well, around the Polynesian peoples and their successful arrival on so many widely separated places in the Pacific. Some of these are even not given credence by modern white NZers, which is a shame.

  Libya was not “another mess” at all.
  
  Under Ghaddafi it had the highest standard of living in Africa – exceeding SA – and was effectively a secular country [as were Iraq and Syria] with Ghaddafi slaughtering the Islamic fundamentalists such as the Ikhwan; along, to be fair, with any others whom he considered a threat to his regime.
  
  There was none of the overt religious atmosphere as per the Gulf. No industrial-scale mosques as in Saudi – just small mosques on street corners in the little villages – reminiscent of the old village churches in England in that they were/are at one with the village landscape.
  
  The locals – male and female – dressed in normal Western clothes, with no beards, no hijabs, no attitude etc. Free medical cover, including specialist treatment in places like Switzerland.
  
  I was posted to Libya for 3 years, after Twin Towers (the Libyans were amused by my Kuwaiti/Gulf Arabic dialect and taught me Libyan dialect) and it was my most enjoyable posting in the Muslim world, due to the locals.
  
  After I returned to Houston, my home base, as soon as I saw on TV the ‘Freedom Fighters’ of the Arab Spring in their beards and short dish dashas I knew that the Western powers (they know who they are) had opened the gates to the fundamentalists.
  
  All that Ghaddafi predicted in the event that he be deposed has happened.
  
  Libya is now destroyed, and it will take generations to fix.

Husband does a delivery to a V Station in our area. Sees they’re vaccinating people & asks how it goes. Nek minute, he’s rolled his sleeve up and been jabbed. No medical records to sight and he’s not saying whether or not he was required to sign a consent form or have the risks of the V explained to him by the Vaccinator. He comes home for lunch. I spot an unusually blotchy face. Ask “what’s going on?” He sheepishly fesses up. Getting a txt in 2 weeks time to go back for the 2nd one. I tell him he’ll have to decamp to the spare room for the next month while all this is going on because I don’t want to share intimate space with him. He says, “No, I’m not leaving my bed, you can move out to the other room’. Im furious to say the least. The other issues I’m furious about is that these V Stations don’t have access to people’s medical records & he’s being vague about signing a consent form or having the Vaccinator explain the risks of a an experimental ‘vaccination’ to him. Surely, this is a breach of medial ethics where people can just rock on up to a place like this, get jabbed & walk out no questions asked?” My medial professional daughter is furious with him.

He would have had to go through a rigmarole to be vaccinated, including informed consent process, and there would be arecord of the vaccination. They don’t have access to your medical records because they are held by your GP, but why would they need to? If you are afraid to “share intimate space” with someone because they have had a Pfizer vaccine dose, then you are rather stupid, and I suspect your husband was less than candid with you because he anticipated your reaction. Known as the Progressive Procurement Policy it is being implemented by Te Puni Kōkiri and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to support Māori businesses and enterprise.

For the purposes of this policy, a Māori business is defined as:

• having at least 50% Māori ownership, or;

• a Māori Authority as defined by the Inland Revenue Department.

Government Procurement Rules and policy requires mandated agencies to consider how to create opportunities for New Zealand businesses, including Māori businesses. As a mandated agency New Zealand Defence Force, Te Ope Kātua O Aotearoa, is committed to this goal and of achieving broader cultural, economic, environmental, and social outcomes when purchasing goods, services or works.

To support the Policy and to allow New Zealand Defence Force to improve its supplier diversity we are looking to identify which of our suppliers are a Māori business, (as defined above), that we currently, or have in the past, purchased goods, services or works from.

  Unfortunately it is old news and we see it on a regular basis. Doesn’t matter how many times you explain to people that the insurer is only liable for the sum insured you have agreed to.

Just called my partner to see what time he was coming home.
Said he’ll be staying at the office a lot longer in the foreseeable future.
