Covid-19 ; Coronavirus Grant Robertson tells businesses to up skill current workforce; border restrictions to continue.
The Finance Minister says work is under way to reduce the Country’s on lockdown and MIQ, but businesses should look to upskill theirexisting workforce rather than rely on overseas workers.
Addressing the Trans Tasman Business Circle in Auckland today Grant Robertson said in the next few weeks the Government would a roadmap for easing restrictions, fresh from post budget tour of the Country Grant Robertson said it was time for a Immigration reset.
This Government with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Deputy Grant Robertson are all talk without doing the walk and should have had a plan months ago instead fucking around sending out false messaging to cover up their true intentions of trying to devide our Country with race baiting policy.

It not business that installed lockdowns and MIQ’s and it was our Prime Minister that used COVID-19 for her own personal need to scare New Zealander’s and canvass for there vote, and it’s not their fault that people continue to get the dole because they are to lazy to work and it’s not Businesses fault that Jacinda used the increase in the dole and other payments to encourage those that don’t want to work to not apply for these particular jobs.

      The govt needs to instruct universities to accept more students training as doctors, nurses, engineers and teachers. Previously we have imported these skills as cheaper than training them here. Also take a bond from these graduates that they get back if they stay in MZ for 5 years.

      I was merely pointing out that the demand for experienced specialize skills cannot simply be met by upskilling.

  Yes because it is so easy to up skill workers. Tell that to the medical practices who are short of GPS.
  
  Take a simple example. Let’s say you run a good Japanese restaurant. You lose your chef. You either need to steal one off another restaurant or get one from Japan. You can’t just ‘up skill’ one of the New Zealand waiters to be a Japanese chef.
  
  I was talking to a friend last night. Her hairdresser is considering shutting the business because she can’t get staff. She has been trying to get a receptionist for three months. Either gets zero or unsuitable appliancts. So she is cutting hair, running reception, and running the business. She also needs to cover whenever someone calls in sick. Which will no doubt now get worse with the 10 days entitlement.
  
  I just see no evidence they these Ministers can relate to business. Telling them to “up skill” workers while paying 100,000 able bodied people to withdraw from the labour force is horrifying.
  
  It is worth remembering that small countries can slide spectacularly when the weight of poor decisions begins to accumulate past a certain point. I get the feeling we are reaching that point.

    I agree it is very hard for these businesses to flick a switch and do that in a short time. But I also think that many businesses have over years got drunk off cheap replaceable labour, which is itself a huge business risk. Those chickens have now come home to roost and those that have chosen to avoid investing in their employees are the ones now becoming unstuck.
    
    It is ultimately a result of a decision the business has taken.

      Yes I agree with you to an extent. However there are a number of strands to the problem. Yes there are a shortage of truck drivers in New Zealand. It is a difficult job often requiring time away from families. But to qualify you need to be drug free and obtain a truck drivers licence and be responsible for millions of dollars of truck and cargo. Of those 100,000 sitting on the couch, how many are willing and able to become truck drivers? If there are some, and they are drug free, and they really want to become a truck driver, they could go and knock on the doors of trucking companies. Nag and nag and show they are keen. Eventually will find someone to give them a go.
      
      Yes it is absurd that we have Indian people staffing nearly all our gas stations. It is a great example of a low skill job that anyone can do. But unless you stop paying people to sit on the couch, take those Indians away and the response will be to switch to unstaffed stations. It won’t be to employ drugged up surly New Zealanders.

        Fair point. I wasnt necessarily talking about beneficiarys though. Up skilling and succession planning are pretty much either done poorly or totally absent in many organisations. Especially where as i mentioned above they have become drunk on cheap, replaceable labour
        
        The best businesses are ones that look after and invest in their staff which in turn builds loyalty, profitability and productivity.
        
        Many of the businesses now in trouble are the ones that have not done that and i guess loyalty runs both ways.

        I’m getting close to retiring. One thought I had was to offer relief driving at the class 1 or 2 level, just within my local area.
        
        This could allow existing class 1 or 2 drivers to move up to bigger roles within the company, either longer distance or heavier vehicles…
        
        Hasn’t progressed more than just a thought at this stage though.
        
        Another thought was buy a 5th- wheeler and just nomad my way around the country…

      And a point I’d make is that chefs are chefs — why doesn’t a Japanese restaurant ‘pivot’ and employ say a kiwi or a Mexican to work providing what they cook — after all, it’s about the markets – not the business. I was a chef btw.
      
      As John Key said when he gave his first speech as PM here in Aussie “NZ business people can be a bit too precious.”
      There are lots of people who comment here who are exactly that. Employers have obligations! 😎

    Same thing Benedict, who is saying that people can be upskilled to specific jobs such as Doctors? I don’t think your Japanese chef is a worthy illustration.
    POAL are right now upskilling stevedores and crane drivers kiwis teaching kiwis. That is what the minister of is talking about. The driver shortage in NZ has been around for a decade, the drivers brought in have effectively meant lower wages and making the industry less attractive. There’s been talk of targetting that but I haven’t seen any action so far.
    If Judith wasn’t so focused on the Mongrel Mob she might spend some time on producing something tangible to have NZers filling vacant jobs, even a partnership of some sort similar to those used by Work and Income but with a more political grunt.
    But of course, she’s trying to retrace the 2008 formula of frightening the public in every which way she can.
    This was one of the criticisms levelled at National recently – not doing the homework of an issue, but rather just giving it a “try” without thorough research. That is similar to wanting to have a “debate” she loses most people on the first line but appears satisfied that she has something – tangible – a headline, exposing brittle logic again.

        Dunno. AFAIK it takes about 3 years of training work experience to become a big rig driver. I. saw that to get a Class 2, there is a $1500 two-day course. There seem to be similar costs for other levels.
        
        Handling a half million $ worth of truck for 12 hours a day for change out of $30/hour. Bit of a dead end job and not “I can save for a house” money …

        Here’s what Walmart did in America two years ago to get drivers – increased the wages offered to $US90,000 a year -(about $NZ130,000).
        
        Importing cheap labour to keep down wages is a sell-out, and opposing it, sadly might give Labour an edge at the next election.

  After people have been out of work for a while it is common to become let us say unresourceful. Many employers don’t have the skills or inclination to take on these people, even with $$ from taxpayer. Anyone who has ever hired a lemon knows precisely what’s at stake.
  
  Grant saying hire, upskill, whatever – actually needs employers to take on what could easily be lemons. So employers make other decisions about the size and pricing of their businesses.
  
  I mentioned here a while back – family member went from school to a foundation trades course at polytech. Fees and a small travel allowance paid by taxpayers (thanks guys), otherwise supported by family. More than 20 started, 4 completed and went on to apprenticeships. Some didn’t last a week. Most if not all sent by WINZ as a condition of getting the dole.
  
  (Ours now fully qualified in two trades and making good money in his early 20s. Proud.)

    ‘trade foundation courses’ – they have them here in aussie – you don’t really need them as the workplace itself suffices — but as you suggest, employers don’t have the inclination — just like those who left the foundation course itself!!!!
    
    In other words – some employers are lemons, mainly due again – to government largesse.

      Not sure if you are just taking the piss. I’ve met one farmer the will admit to voting labour in the last election, and he is long term red. Rural electorates have a far larger population of people who have no skin in the game, e.g. retired, teachers, public servants, welfare takers, private and corporate than there are farmers, tradies, or other producers.
      Do you have any evidence that the productive sector voted for dead beat socialists?

        Matt – I am not saying this lightly. Every rural electorate went to Labour, even National strong holds. Not only electorate vote, but Party vote also. The vote difference between 2017 and 2020 is really big. Without the help of the traitors this could not have happened.

      Yep ,they tried to minimise numbers when 14500 farmers walked down Featherstone st thence to Lambton key and parliament.Topdressing aircraft buzzed the Beehive.
      First the LABOUR GOVERNMENT originally claimed a mere 4-5 thousand but when numbers were counted on TV they had to change.Never publicised though.
      Seems your claims of farmer traitors are much the same.

Portraying yourself as bold, facing issues and being open while not having the balls to be upfront about it?

I would have expected her to take the tone of, “What the f…, we can get money from wherever we like. If they want to tell you that’s their business, ask them.”

“He Kōtuku Rerenga Tahi” was inspired by the legend of Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator and expresses universal themes of journeys, dynamic life and peace.
Kupe is said to have journeyed from Hawaiiki, the ancestral homeland of Maori, overcoming many severe obstacles at sea, to become the first person to discover Aotearoa. “He kōtuku rerenga tahi” is a whakatauki or proverb, which means “a white heron’s flight is seen but once”. It is used to indicate a very special and rare event and in this case refers to the arrival of Kupe and his waka Matawhaorua.

  About his personal National Superannuation details.
  And, for some unfathomable reason, he got the name of the Social Welfare office, where he lodged his super application, to be suppressed.
  I attended the Court hearing and if I disclosed the name of that Social Welfare office I would be showing as much respect for the laws of our country as our Minister of Courts has shown, as displayed in that recent decision by the Ombudsman.

I think it’s fair to say that the script has been written with a significant political slant. But when even Henry Cooke says “Honestly the stuff about Simon Bridges borders on defamatory”, you’d have to be worried about the accuracy of the script. I’ve seen a couple of the lines attributed to Bridges and agree with Cooke that they border on defamatory, and are grossly inaccurate and inflammatory.

There’s also the small matter of Winston Peters’ “Road to Damascus” experience with regard to Asians, especially Asians of the Islamic faith. Just a couple of weeks after the attack on the two Christchurch mosques, Peters refused to resile from comments he had previously made about Muslims, continuing his almost 30-year history of xenophobia.

  Happy, the waiting list for new cars is from 3 to 6 months, depending on the model demand. New TV sets can have a 3 month wait. Then we have building supplies which I am told have long waits, sometiimes many months and yes the prices have increased. Power, fuel, insurance and rates have increased in cost. Increased costs lead to inflation, an increase in interest rates and then mortgage foreclosures. Robertson is a professional student with no real life experience, living in Wellington and surrounded by his own kind.

  If the US is anything to go by, when Biden took control (Ha Ha) the inflation level was 1.4% five months later it is 5.4%, a 13 year high.
  The projections are it will level out and go into downward trend. Time will tell.
  Government led policy directions can have very serious consequences.

    We imported more “dirty coal” from Indonesia in the first four months of 2021 than we did in 2016 and 2017 combined. It’s an unintended consequence of the ban on new onshore oil and gas permits.
    
    There’s another unintended consequence that is becoming evident. Have there been road repairs in your area that have been or poor quality, or that have needed repairs almost straight away? There certainly have been around here! And it’s because New Zealand no longer produces bitumen at Marsden Point, but is importing an inferior substitute that’s not intended for use on New Zealand’s road.
    
    Obviously, the PM was more interested in responding to a petition from secondary school students than actually doing some investigations into the consequences of shutting down our oil and gas industry almost overnight. Now we’re all paying for it, while Indonesian coal burns at Huntley to keep the lights on, and the trucks carting it from Auckland and Tauranga rip our roads up.

Yes, I know Herald just did a cut and paste off AP, but they are still responsible for everything they print.

The first paragraph is already wrong:

Two errors straight off:
1) It isn’t just in poor areas. It is happening in relatively wealthy areas too.
2) The cops and soldiers are hardly trying. Cops are participating in the looting and I suspect soldiers too.

Nope, it is happening in the cities too: Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg.

More devastation and destruction coming out of South Africa. however friends and family have been talking about how they have rallied to protect their towns with people (of all races) forming militia to protect their neighbours and support the police (where the local cops are present).
Many small towns have barricaded their entrances and only allowing locals in.

I have no problem with interest rates needing to return to more normal levels. Interest rates need to rise to help contain inflation. However I am stunned that nobody (Media, economist, MP etc) has pointed out that if the Reserve bank wants to control inflation BEFORE increasing interest rates they need to stop printing money.

Printing money reduces the value of existing money, therefore meaning more is required to buy the same product or service. Thus it is highly inflationary.

It makes no sense to continue pushing up inflation (by printing money) and at the same time increase interest rates to control spending.

The Church of England is about to apologise for England expelling Jews in 1290. This was nearly 250 years before the church was formed.
Oliver Cromwell lifted the ban in 1657.

Prejudice against Jews in those days seems partly or largely because Christians then, like some or most Muslims now, opposed the concept of charging of interest on money loans.

Pre-Reformation Christians believed the concept of interest was unnatural, likening it to the way living things procreated.

Unlike present-day Muslims they didn’t have widespread lending using faux interest, or commercial bill type lending where you just repay more than you borrow.

Because there is always a need to borrow capital, only Jews were able to provide the service, and for this, or largely for this, Jews reaped hatred and persecution.

  Very sorry for this Jack5, but the emergence of the Church of England was more of a transition from Roman Catholicism to English Catholicism brought about by Henry the Eighth’s lustiness & obligation to provide a male heir.
  
  Your right about usury being frowned upon way back then, which in my view was a damn good & more humane thing. It was the protestant revolution that opened the floodgates of capitalism & led to the inhumane interest regimes that ruin many lives today. An excellent & somewhat depressing read about this stuff is Max Weber’s ‘The Protestant Ethic & the Spirit of Capitalism’.

    Or perhaps there could be apologies to the Latvians and Basques who retain the most notable portions of genes of the original Hunter-Gatherers who were displaced by the Neolithic farming newcomers 8000 years ago.
    
    Disagree on capitalism, though. The aggregation and mobility of capital has been of immense support, if not the key, to economic development.
    
    There’s a lot to be said of Hernando de Soto’s concept of “dead capital” – assets which can’t be capitalised on.
    
    In many Third World countries, and even still today to an extent with tribal land in NZ, the asset of land cannot be used as collateral to amass capital for development. You need a cadastral (land survey and title) system and a culture that allows land to be sold so you can borrow on it as security, and get things moving.
    
    At least that’s the way to do it in a democracy. In a Chinese version of Marxism, the State just uses the vast land it totally owns as an initial base for capital.
    
    Jews may have been forced into lending and banking, as Maggy Wassilieff posts above, but their misfortune benefited the world by their expertise that’s helped grow lending, banking, and general use of capital.

Many American bar and restaurant workers found better jobs during the pandemic lockdowns, and don’t want to return to the industry, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Some economists are talking about a lasting shift in the American labour market, after many hospitality workers moved during lockdowns to new careers in digital sales, shipping, mortgage-financing and other businesses that thrived in the pandemic.

“To try to lure workers back, many restaurant operators and other hospitality businesses are raising wages, offering signing perks and rethinking scheduling practices to make the work more flexible and, in some cases, less gruelling,” the newspaper says.

  I was a chef for many years – and I would never suggest to anyone who is looking for ‘meaningful employment’ to work in the ‘food industry’ — and that includes everything except farming.

Caller to ZB earlier this morning tells Kerry Woodham of his daughter working in an MIQ facility near the Airport.

Says the owners are thinking of ‘pulling the plug’ on the operation due to constant vandalism of the accommodation, with some rooms even having to be closed permanently due to ‘structural’ damage.

The other major problem is THEFT.
Anything not nailed down is nicked on a regular basis. Stuff like electric jugs, toasters, crockery, pillows, sheets, towels, and mattress-covers are having to be replaced daily.

South Africa may become an attractive option the way this government is going 🙁

Some interesting audio and images from South Africa…

Most of this is happening in KZN – where I grew up. This has always been a very volatile part of South Africa.

One is a bit of a speech about “comrades” and “white monopoly capital” and sounds very much like a provocateur trying to turn this from a Zulu vs government into a black vs white conflict. The reasons I say that is this:
1) While the person is speaking is a black South African, there is no way he’s a Zulu. He is probably from a Northern tribe and I suspect is a member of the EFF (Julius Malema and crew). Zulu pronunciation is completely different and he struggles with saying Zulu words properly. Thus he’s not part of this uprising.
2) Zulus very seldom talk about their “black brothers”. All non-Zulus are foreigners and are lesser people (Xhosa are second class, everyone else are third class).
3) EFF have been agitating for black vs others violence but need the Zulus onboard for their numbers. They (I assume it is them here) are opportunistically trying to redirect the anger towards their target: white monopoly capital etc etc.

Of course events like this tend to also pop up fakery etc from all sides but most of this looks and sounds pretty genuine to me.

  One of my besties from tennis came here with her family from SA about 5 years ago. They bought a beautiful big home in Arney Cres.
  She wishes her mum and dad had come when they had the chance. Such beautiful hard working people. It’s been an absolute credit having them in the hood.
  When you look at what’s going on over there now, why we just can’t throw our doors open to any white citizens who want to escape the black tyranny and corruption is beyond me.

    I would not make it about black & white. There are plenty well educated, hard working non-white people caught up in this mess who would prefer to live without the tyranny and corruption too. They too would make wonderful additions to the NZ economy & society.
    
    This has been a long time coming. It was obvious back in the 1980s that it would come to this. But, hey, many people just don’t want to change and move.
    
    My sister is a nurse there. She’s been robbed at gun point, almost killed in 2 car crashes (terrible drivers there), hourse burgled often and family members robbed, assaulted etc etc. She has specialised AIDS training and she is fluent in Zulu and Xhosa (as well as English and Afrikaans). She can’t get a proper job because her skin is the wrong colour. She could get a Canadian (or Irish through her husband) passport at a snap of her fingers. I have told her on numerous occasions she could get a great job in Canada, Australia, NZ, wherever, but she just won’t move. In fact, they moved to Ireland, then moved BACK when her brother in law got sick.

    The bad violence during apartheid was a black-on-black power struggle between ANC and IFP for the control of the inevitable majority rule government. These power struggles killed 20,000 people per year. The white involvement was almost exclusively citizen force soldiers called up for “township duty” to keep them apart.
    
    The ANC’s Operation Vula in the early 1990s brought in about 20 tonnes of weapons into South Africa. This was supposed to be for a fight against apartheid, but was in reality used for black-on-black power struggles.

There has been yet another report released saying Maori and Pasifika are being failed by the system and this time it was Plunket. Dr Rawiri Jansen interviewed, said it all goes back to Sir Truby King who was a white supremacist. ( the interviewer didn’t pull him up on it).

The tweet also said that a lot of listeners texted their complaints in. Firstly, who the hell is John McDonald and what gives him the right to teat anyone with contempt and, secondly, I didn’t know Canterbury had their own version of Newstalk.

Tony Stuart ahove tells us the ban on new offshore exploration licences has caused the importation of coal to swell. Many people were of the understanding that the halving of gas production from our biggest onshore field, the poor inflows to our hydro lakes and the stellar year our dairy sector was enjoying (1kg coal for 1kg mlk powder) were factors. But good to know it was actually the failure to produce thermal generation fuels from undiscovered, (let alone commercially developed) offshore hydrocarbon fields.

To their credit Fonterra have brought forward their plans to get out of coal but say it can’t be done instantly. The other factors are somewhat beyond the government’s control. Still, that shouldn’t stop us blaming them, eh Tony?

Just because he is a good rugby player doesn’t mean he now meets those criteria. If he becomes unemployed he will not get the benefit, and if he gets in trouble he will be deported. If he had not been a New Zealander he wouldn’t be there at all.
