This will be unwelcome news for people still clinging to the belief that vaccines are our way out of this:

Israel: Highest infection rate in the world

Israel is reporting the highest coronavirus infection rate in the world, showing that neither vaccine mandates nor “vaccine passports” are suitable means to limit or end the pandemic.

It should be noted that even in Israel, covid vaccines continue to provide some limited protection (up to 50%) against hospitalization and severe disease. Nevertheless, double-vaccinated Israeli citizens will again count as ‘unvaccinated’ and will require a third dose. It may well be, however, that “booster shots” have further increased recent coronavirus infections (“post-vaccination spike”).

On the positive side, Israeli data confirms that natural immunity, acquired through previous infection, is much stronger and long-lasting – providing a protection up to 27 times higher than vaccination – thus opening up a realistic perspective to end the pandemic. Depending on the country, between 5% and 75% of the population have already acquired natural immunity.

    Just had my second jab 10 minutes ago. Now I’ll wait another 8 months for jab 2. We just want our vaccine passports to get out of this stupidity.
    
    Wife’s friend in theUK has said they are aware of the chance of infection, are being more cautious, but they are learning to live with the virus in the community.

        The deaths per day sounds terrible. But as a % of the UK population I doubt that’s even 0.1%… I also imagine many of those dying have not been vaccinated.

        Maybe you get your figures from the mainstream media, they are highly selective and highly escalated.
        Last 7 days they show 740 deaths,
        six months 9,581 deaths, 53 deaths a day,
        I am not sure where you are getting your 200 deaths a day
        There reproductive figure is at magic 1, they are in full control.

        The responsible Covid Liveupdate web site reports no new Covid-19 cases in Sweden but 26,277 active cases. (Also, 1,088,203 recovered cases, and 14,651 deaths).
        
        The second link below is to a Swedish web site which claims Covid-19 incidence has increased in several parts of the country.
        
        Sweden has kept its businesses running and schools open throughout, though early this year it passed legislation allowing a lockdown.
        
        If TVNZ wanted to be useful, it could have Jack Lame take a muppet squad Sweden to report on what’s happening.
        
        However, Taiwan continues to the world stand-out with low infection and death numbers per capita, and businesses and schools running.
        
        Taiwan has begun inoculating people with its home-developed vaccine, from Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp, before the end of its three trial phases. The final trial will be in Paraguay.
        
        Taiwan is already using Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines, but the Taiwan Times reports Tsai Ing-wen, the President (its first female president), held off on receiving shots until Medigen was ready.

        Just for some relativity, in NZ our annual total mortality is 7.1 / 1000, or ~35,000 pa, or ~100 per day. That’s why there are so many Undertakers!
        
        People are dying as a part of our life, and especially with the elderly, or unhealthy, something will come along at some point of time, that tips them over the edge. A bit like that TV programme “Tipping Point”.
        
        That “something” will vary from time to time, it’s seasonal, and cyclical, and right now it is top of the scale. However we must not rely on simple “high level” statistics, especially when it could be that most of those dying may well have died of some other cause anyway, if not now, but in the very near future.
        
        For a huge majority (>99%), Covid-19 is just a bad flu. And that is the reality.

        Before you blabber on about preventable deaths, I suspect there’s more than 200 of those extra deaths that would be preventable if , using covid economics, money is no object

      The WHO has recently [Aug-28th] published a document, sponsored by the Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, detailing technical specifications for the global implementation of “vaccine certificates”. Critics have long argued that “vaccine certificates” may well be a first step towards the introduction of a global digital biometric ID system that may later be expanded into a dystopian Chinese-style “social credit” control system
      
      Our grandchildren will NEVER forgive us if we allow this type of dystopian future to metastasise while we stand idly by.

        I have commented on the vaccine passport issue previously. I will say again that these are not new. I carried one in the 70’s in order to travel overseas. It was a yellow booklet, the size of a passport. In it was was recorded when I had a smallpox inoculation, and also one of the “coloured” fever shots, scarlet or yellow, I can’t remember which. You also had to have other vaccination types to travel to Africa, for example. We didn’t see it as a problem in those days. I guess, as a result of all of this, smallpox only exists in a couple of laboratories in the world now. A problem in itself.

        kk, I don’t want the vaccine passports for Covid. It’s contrary to everything I believe in, but it is not going to get me anywhere standing at the airport, being told I’m not entitled a bording card to leave NZ without the pass.
        
        30 years ago, I lived and worked in PNG, given the nature of the place, I was happy to do the tests and get the jabs – it was free will as I was choosing to go to a country where certain viruses are more prevalent than in NZ.
        
        However, covid is a different matter, this a flu like respiratory virus with first governments and now Airlines controlling people as to our rights to be free citizens when we exit and return to supposedly democratic countries (immigration visas aside). The democratic world is not China, North Korea or Russia.

        Quarantine restrictions are at least centuries old.
        
        Here’s an interesting history site, which includes facts such as the origin of the world “quarantine”.
        
        It comes from the Italian “quaranta giorni,” for the 40 days which epidemic-infected ships were required to anchor off 14th Century Venice.
        
        The main ports in New Zealand have relics of the quarantine sites used for ship passengers and crews in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

      hullkiwi – I had my second jab last week. I also want to travel next year. Realistically I don’t see any way that this Prime Minister will back down from these draconian lockdowns unless the majority of New Zealanders are vaccinated?
      
      Although they don’t provide perfect protection they do seem to have diminished the death rate in the UK. The UK would have a thousand deaths a day at the peak of the pandemic. They had 200 deaths the other day, which is a lot. However bear in mind that about 695,000 people die in the UK every year which works out to be an average of 1900 a day. Added to the better treatment of Covid, people seem to be surviving it better. The vaccine appears to have made a difference in the UK and I think it is making a difference here. No one has died from the Delta variant so far. That’s probably because the most vulnerable have been vaccinated and we are protecting our rest homes better.

    Will the government accept that it was wrong and that we wasted billions on an elimination strategy that was never going to work, never going to happen.
    
    They will double down on the stupid, hey let’s build dedicated isolation facilities, we can use them later as detention centers for those guilty of hate speach and in need of re-education.

    No matter how you spin it, vaccines are part of the solution to managing the way out of Covid-19 restrictions.
    
    One of the key points, one might think, is at what point do we think we can accept increased infection (perhaps stopping widespread vaccination) and allow natural immunity to develop throughout the population. Evidence so far shows that a combination of vaccination plus natural infection gives the best and highest antibody spectrum.

      Try the official Swedish web site below for the position of Sweden on Israelis.
      
      The border change, which comes into effect next Monday, applies also to citizens of the United States, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro and North Macedonia. Sweden is taking them off an exemption list, bringing the country into line with the European Union, of which it is a member.
      
      However, Sweden is also exempting from the border ban citizens of Iceland, Norway, and Leichenstein.

      Yes, counting people vaccinated less than 14 days would give a false impression that vaccines were less effective. It is well know the vaccines aren’t fully effective until 14 days from the second dose.
      
      I know some here are hanging out to bag the vaccines but of all the things to criticise th CDC for, this aint one.

        Latest data would suggest they’re not effective at all and could even be causing net increase in infection. Something very disturbing is going on in Israel right now, there is no way the stated efficacy of the pfizer shot can be true with what is happening over there.

  – does this mean Israel should relatively shortly become the only country in the world to have the highest level of natural immunity – for people who survive their first contraction of covid?

    Not an expert of this (pharmachick… where are you?), so can only comment based on reading a bunch of papers. My take is, in relation to Covid-19 and the current generation of vaccines, that no one yet appears to know. There will do doubt by studies happening right now, looking at chorts with attenuated vaccine protection that has been followed by infections where the natural immune system was called to respond. Interested in any research others may have found on this.

        When working as intended, the self expression of the Covid spike protein generates and immune antibody response in the body. However it does appear (but not fully demonstrated as far as I am aware) that the other forms of human immunity (T and B cells) are not activated normally.
        
        Antibody activity alone declines with time since the “infection” or in this case, the vaccination. The longer term immune memory is preserved in the T and B cell subsystems. Hence the expressed desire to have booster shots to keep the antibody levels up.
        
        A natural infection once repelled does generate T and B cell memories, and these are both long lasting and also augment the antibody system, hence, supposedly, the much stronger protection offered.
        
        Note that other vaccines, non-mRNA ones are supposed to activate the T and B cell pathways.
        
        As a side note, it is possible, and I think Benedict mentioned this the other day, the relatively high vaccine side effects from the mRNA vaccines may be related to the mRNA itself not staying in the muscle tissue (where it would be expressed and used up, generating a local semi auto-immune reaction) but getting out into the blood or lymph systems. If in the blood, these would quite quickly end up in the heart where if the mRNA is expressed in heart tissue it would generate a strong and potentially lethal heart tissue or heart sack inflammation response. This is the pericarditis/myocarditis side effect.

        Looks like from Ed’s answer below that we should vaccinate as many as want it as soon as possible, then open the borders immediately, letting the virus in while the vaccinated have maximum protection and can develop natural immunity by having Covid-19 with minimised side effects.

        Yes, on the face of it a staged transition to a position similar to Iceland would seem to be the new “best practice” option. Vaccinate as many as you can to minimise the impact, focusing on the most vulnerable first. Then “allow” the virus to spread as slowly as is reasonable or can be managed (which may not be slow at all or in the least bit manageable). For those who have had the disease, no vaccination needed.
        
        And as a further “leg” to the strategy, investigate and if possible obtain other vaccines that may have a significantly better level of protection, there are several candidates with the Novavax one probably the closest to approval.
        
        Sticking with the current strategy is both bound ultimately to fail and it is crushing our economy. And for those who can’t see the whole picture, the economy is people’s lives, and the lockdowns are potentially killing more people than the virus has or will. And NZ will be permanently poorer and less able to afford first world levels of health care.

      Possible indication of time to develop anti-bodies appears to be maybe a month –
      one example – The swift rise over the first month of infection, followed by a fast decline of the circulating spike IgG and IgA antibodies, is a consistent finding and likely explained by the disappearance of the short-lived plasmablasts.
      
      And several sources indicate “natural immunity” appears to start fading from about 8 months.

      Israel didn’t “need to let in Covid” for the population to raise “herd immunity”, an uncontrolled surge is underway and they are heading back to where they were with social distancing and masks.
      Judging by that NZ has it right. Not racing against the clock with Covid spreading fast in the community.

        Their average annual death rate for the 2009-2019 decade was 0.92%. There were several years that exceeded 0.94%.
        
        In other words Sweden did not suffer thousands of death from Covid-19 PLUS the usual thousands of deaths from flu and Pneumonia, which is what you’d expect from a disease that kills in the same way and which kills the same type of people, the elderly and infirm.

    Protection from infection attenuates from about month 2 to less than 50% at month 6. Evidence varies on the quantum, but the trend is undisputed.
    
    The death rate is a little tricker to contextualise for our purposes because: –
    
    (a) Israel had the Alpha wave prior to vaccination, where NZ had no such wave.. so the natural immunity profiles will be quite different.
    
    (b) Israel had vaccinations happening much earlier than NZ so the protective effect of these therapies will be attenuating differently.

      Also need to consider confounding effects, and the data is mostly inadequate for this.
      
      For example, the in latest UK figures, for those <50 years old, the IFD (infection death rate, that is the number recorded as catching Covid who do die from it) is around 2-2.5 x higher amongst the vaccinated than the unvaccinated. Which sounds like a damning situation for vaccination, but the numbers are quite low and can easily be skewed. If in that age group the most vulnerable (existing co-morbidities say) were targeted and have largely been vaccinated, they would be far more vulnerable even after vaccination than the mostly healthy unvaccinated group, thus their infections and deaths would indeed skew the result. I would suggest that this is happening, but the extent of the effect is not known; would take a fairly sophisticated bit of analysis to tease this out, and quite possibly, significantly better data.

        Oh yes they did, but faced with the evidence that they certainly are not, most have backtracked.
        
        Vaccines are not typically sold as therapeutics, for example you don’t get the MMR vaccine to simply reduce ones chance of getting measles etc or to reduce the impact if you do get it, you get the MMR jab to prevent you ever catching the diseases. Same with the Flu jab, it prevents you catching the varieties that it is designed to cover but probably has no impact on other varieties.
        
        This “designed to ameliorate” narrative is just a cover for the failure of the vaccinate to eliminate strategy. It’s fine and a worthwhile addition to our ways to combat the virus, but don’t pretend that it isn’t a fallback strategy.

        Given that Iceland is over 75% vaccinated, the fact that 67% of those in ICU are vaccinated is not promising, though I would expect that the most vulnerable are all vaccinated, and that those vulnerable people are more likely to show up in ICU anyway.
        
        So the vaccine may well be helping, but it might take a more sophisticated analysis to really demonstrate the advantages.
        
        One of the things I lament about this whole saga is the dearth of good, reliable, non-politically obsessed data and the analysis of same. More than anything, our response to Covid and how we change that should be firmly based on solid scientific evidence, and yet so much of it is not. People have lost faith in experts because they lie to you so much and refuse to even acknowledge those lies when confronted with them.
        
        The origins of the virus is one example, the effectiveness (or total lack of effectiveness) of masks is another, plus the whole vaccine will PREVENT infection/oh no it never was supposed to prevent but just to ameliorate narrative. That and the 15 days to reduce the spread.
        
        Sure, at the start we didn’t know very much and a lot of what was tried looked promising and should indeed be tried. Like masks, until it was convincingly demonstrated that Covid is an aerosolized virus I for one opined that we should mask up as much as possible. As the data changed though, it is obvious that masking is ineffective and simply a political gesture/control mechanism, yet that cannot, it seems, be admitted.
        
        Same with the vaccine, sure, believe it would be 95% effective and effectively stop the spread, but now that it is quite clear that it isn’t 95% effective, stop it with the eliminate, admit the problem (no one will blame you for a change driven by newer and better data, or they shouldn’t if you act in good faith) and restrategize.
        
        So, why has politics become so poisonous that attempts to have an open debate and find the best ways to deal with this are dealt with using command and control narratives and the shutting down of free speech ?

    One reason to use Israeli data is that it is available at a level of detail not seen from other countries.
    
    Israel has vaccinated a relatively high proportion of its citizens, one problem is that the percentage actually vaccinated is cited at quite different levels by different people. For example Science magazine (reasonably reliable) says 78%, yet Ourworldindata site says 62.5% fully vaccinated. The difference could be age classification, it might be that 78% over the over 12’s are vaccinated which equals 62.5 overall.
    
    However other places have higher levels, Ireland is at 67% and Iceland at 77%, plus Denmark at 72%, Gibraltar at over 100% (not sure how that works, maybe third shot boosters). And Yemen, at <0.1%.
    
    Israel is a relatively open society and seems to have good reporting, so a useful source, but not the only one.

    I have to question why, if his assertions are accurate, why there are no clinical trials that support them, You know those pesky double blind trials of more than 63 people-peer reviewed)
    
    Why, if his assertions are accurate, why are they not used by the majority of Doctors treating Covid patients.
    Oh, I forgot its a conspiracy theory. ALL the doctors in the world are under the thumb of big pharma,
    So Hospitals want their ICUs overflowing with Covid patients.
    Politicians are happy with high death rates in their areas.

  Israel was one of the first countries to mass vaccinate its population under an agreement with Pfizer.
  
  Eighty percent of adults are fully vaccinated there, yet Covid-19 cases and serious hospitalisations have risen 20-fold since early July with more than 80% of new cases reported by the Israeli Health Ministry among vaccinated individuals.
  
  In the United Kingdom, more than three-quarters of the adult population (76 percent) have received two doses of a Covid-19 injection and almost 90 percent of adults have received at least one dose. Yet, the number of Covid-19 patients hospitalised has soared sevenfold since early June this year.
  
  The most recent U.K. report on “variants of concern” published by Public Health England revealed that 58% of Covid-19 deaths are among the fully vaccinated, with that number rising to 67% when including those who had received a single dose of a Covid-19 injection.
  
  That data, McCullough said, “is basically showing that the vaccines are failing.”
  
  Covid-19, no matter what the variant, is easily treatable at home with simple, available drugs, according to McCullough, who has stated that “about 88 percent of hospitalisations and deaths can be avoided” with early treatment.

    Of course those with apparent natural immunity can get a second dose of Covid, people with defective immune systems that don’t retain sufficient immune memory exist, but these cases are very, very rare. By contrast there are hundreds of thousands of fully vaccinated people who have subsequently caught Covid, with significant numbers dying from it.
    
    There is a risk to vaccination, and there is zero data that suggests vaccination improves the immunity of those who already have natural immunity. So you are advocating a procedure that adds risk but with no positive outcome, typical of authoritarian types. You Vill Do What I Say !

  Maori were given priority to get the jab over every other race in NZ and they didn’t turn up to get them. I deal with MIQ facilities at work and we couldn’t get the jab through official channels so got all of our staff jabbed at a local medical center because the Maoris weren’t turning up and they didn’t want to waste the vaccine. This was back in July. It pisses me off when I hear the Maoris bitching about a racial health system when they are pushed to the front and still don’t turn up.

  Manipulating Cycle rates and inability to actually ascertain what the person has tested positive to has always been a problem.
  They are fit for purpose if you want fear porn, just crank it up to 40 cycles and over and you can find a kiwifruit or any other hapless with the dreaded lurgy. The Africans worked this out way back.
  When the new testing is installed, the cases will plummet and the flu will magically reappear.

You will not read this in the MSM. The Government and Minister James Shaw have screwed up big time with the ETS. They have been seriously been out gunned by speculators, mostly big institutions who drove the carbon prices way above the limits Shaw set.

The idea was that companies seeking to offset their CO2 emissions could buy units from the Government. With the carbon price set by the Government to go much higher those with the readies dived in knowing what they paid $50 for today will be worth over $100 in a few months. That’s a great return.

However its coming out of our pockets and it shows how incredibly incompetent Shaw and his Labour mates are – beaten by a few people who saw an opportunity and ripped us off.

  Maybe he didn’t go indoors anywhere and didn’t go anywhere near anyone? I smell a lot of rats. Chances of death of Covid increase if the infected person is deprived of fresh air and sunshine. If I was a bad-faith official wanting to maximise the death toll I would order all infected people to self isolate in a small room with no windows or doors open “to protect others”.     JA said on Monday it was pointless having live parliament just so they could question her, she said she is only in question time Tuesday and Wednesday and only questioned for about 15 minutes of that. But due to lockdown she can’t travel on Thursday so has to appear and do an extra hour (15mins) of work. COVID-19 lockdowns caused more deaths instead of reducing them, study finds

Those who pushed ‘shelter in place’ policies share the blame, but everyone feels the consequences.

The pathologies of the lockdowns are clear and have been both predicted and recorded. They include increased risk of preventable deaths from cancer, heart disease, etc., as well as psychological trauma, resulting in increased homicides, accidents and suicidal ideations, caused by long periods of isolation.

The simple fact is that COVID-19 was and is a highly infectious respiratory disease to which everyone is eventually going be exposed either naturally or through vaccines. The disease tends to kill older people and those with pre-existing respiratory challenges or who are obese.

When the Beehive theatrette layout was revealed in a ‘pan out’ on TV, I noticed all present were correctly spaced.
However, the seating is not suitable for pandemic style separation, being fixed and with limited space between rows.
Surely, in a pandemic, with limited media present, individual chairs could be arranged.

Here we have the farmers Union national president crawling up to the Labour Party Minister of Agriculture and disparaging the Groundswell protestors as “crazies”.

I went to the protest here and saw at least five past and present Fed Farmers provincial presidents there – and many other paid up members.

Why are these membership based organisations so in awe of this Labour Party and too anxious to question or challenge them?
The Party must be appeased – and I guess, like many before him, Mr Hoggard will be looking to the time when he is not a president but might get a nice position on a board or to a government appointed council of some sort……

  However likely scenario now, a “medical” retirement/resignation before the mid terms with a pre worked out deal with Pierre Delecto to appoint a new VP. After the mid terms it seems at least likely that both houses will fall to the GOP, so they would not want that as it would make any VP selection problematic.

We have A bunch of Kiwis trapped in Aussie, and we have limited MIQ capacity:
Can we just let everyone come back while we are at level 4 anyway- would that work? If we think level 4 is enough to suppress things, could we use it to bring people back?

  Most people will realise MIQ isn’t like a normal stay in a hotel. There are Covid-19 related safety protocols all over the place. This person doesn’t seem to understand anything beyond her own nose.
  
  It’s not normal for someone to get that angry that quickly and to post it all on Facebook. Most Kiwis will sympathise with the MIQ workers who put themselves in harms way from Covid and now from aggressive isolators.
  
  I note all those workers are now isolating because of her actions and one refuses to return because they feel unsafe.
  
  I find it peculiar you would use this incident to beat the government with because almost no-one but you is on her side.

  She claims it had already been eaten – what does that mean? Is it just the toppings being in disarray after transport? Were there slices with bites taken out of them?
  
  She seems to be suggesting in her follow up video today that they are being treated differently from other guests – does she have any evidence of this?

Interviewed by John McDonald on Newstalk ZB this morning, she is asked if the officers who arrested the Covid absconder yesterday had been vaccinated. That’s a reasonable question, given so many Police remain unvaccinated.

Poto’s reply? She suggests McDonald put in an OIA request to find out! What a complete and utter cop-out (unintentional pun!). As a Cabinet Minister Williams earns $236,806 per annum, plus perks; supposedly she’s ranked #10 in Cabinet!

I know the talent pool in Labour is shallow, and the bar for Ministers is pretty low. But Poto Williams is proving again and again to be an absolute liability, promoted way beyond her capability.
