Don Beckett

Just heard from my oldest (51 y/o) son. One of his schoolboy friends has committed suicide. I knew him well, but doesn’t live around here now. Married with a couple of kids. He apparently didn’t handle the first lockdown at all well – this latest one tippied him over the edge & he’s ended it all.
But that’s OK according to [Deleted – Mod] – lockdowns save lives doncha know. Just another awkward statistic.

  That’s awful to hear Don. I too have lost friends to suicide over the last eighteen months, and it’s utterly heartbreaking to hear of lives being ended prematurely.
  
  Shortly before the 2017 election, Jacinda Ardern spoke to a suicide awareness rally at Parliament, where she said that one suicide was one too many, a sentiment most of us would agree with. But since becoming the government, Labour’s action on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention hasn’t matched their rhetoric.
  
  National has made Matt Doocey spokesman for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, and has promised that if National is elected in 2023, there will be a Minister with specific responsibility for those important issues. It’s one National policy I would not be at all disappointed if Labour stole, but sadly, that’s unlikely, and the issues will continue to get kicked down the road, with devastating effect.

    I largely agree with you. The Bill was very good for the first few years only. Hill Street Blues was revolutionary in its time for the gritty, developing story arcs. Brideshead Revisited was visually stunning, but I only read the book fairly recently and the prose is better. Inspector Morse was supposed to be slow, it is quite close to the Colin Dexter novels, which are more complex than most detective stories. LA Law was the forerunner of a stream of sexy US law firm series. Miami Vice was ki9nd of cool – the buddy cop show as an extended music video. To Serve Them All My Days was supposed to be slow, quite close to the Delderfield novels.

        The books let you more into his thoughts – detection as an almost academic challenge. He is not always a sympathetic character, and is not meant to be. Nor will he ever find the love he craves, so has to settle for music, beer and his car.

  Brideshead is one of my favourite novels and the series just basically read the book to you so I loved it. Never watch Cop shows so that pretty much takes out the rest for me I guess.

The Road Transport Forum is not a “business”. A business can do what it likes. The Road Transport Forum is funded by three commercial trucking associations. In turn, those associations are funded by road transport companies, independent truck drivers, and thousands of other entities that make up trucking and transport logistics.

The article infers that this “business” faced random abuse by members of the public. However if you look at the Facebook page, it is mostly the MEMBERS of the associations that are upset.

Perhaps they should have taken a vote before they made the change. The “Road Transport Forum” is a strong brand. Of course the members are upset.

  Doesn’t matter what the actual facts are – even if they are included in the report.
  Labour’s media helpers know that many people will only read a headline and very occasionally the first sentence or two of the story.

      I enjoyed living and working 7 years in the Pacific and are well familiar with a live Polynesian language. Maori stopped developing and is largely useless except for protocols and special use on a Marae.
      
      There are too many Pakeha to consider. Maori themselves have intermingled to such an extent that even that community probably doesn’t contain 30% Polynesian genes in total.
      The trouble makers now are the young activists trying to win tribal honours. Too late!

    Wouldn’t surprise me. This is one of the reasons I stopped reading Stuff about a year ago – I just found myself getting increasingly annoyed at being told I was racist (and that the entire country is racist); that Maori are oppressed and as a white male of British descent its my fault and I need to admit it and own it; and on and on.
    
    I found it better for my mental health to stop reading a website which seems to find it necessary to continually push down my throat how I’m responsible for so much of what is wrong in New Zealand and the world these days. That and the fact that, in the pursuit of their agendas, Stuff cannot be trusted to report in certain areas of interest in a neutral and unbiased fashion.

Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister spouts all the crap the UN wants to hear but its different to the response she has at home.
We know that poverty and inequality drive conflict and instability, and we are also seeing this in heightened civil unrest and confict.
Humanitarian cases have worsened, we are seeing this in Afghanistan and there are many more.
Ardern also said that the UN’s work on climate change continues to be of the highest importance and continue to work to improve its response.

  Jacinda reads a good speech, whether she understands it is another matter. It is all very well to make announcements but if you lack the intelligence to see any potential unintended consequences it is best to remain silent.
  I look at the New Zealand of 2016 and wonder how we have managed to make things so much worse in 5 years and then I listen to Jacinda, Grant et al and realise giving the student council the reigns of power was a mistake.

    Benedict: Have you read Paul Moon’s “This Horrid Practice” by any chance? (the “horrid practice” is cannibalism, as observed among the Maori by Cook in 1769).
    
    All these -tanga words paint a picture of peace loving Maori all living in perfect harmony with nature and each other. Apparently when they weren’t hunting and gardening, they all sat around singing and playing stick games.
    
    Moon paints a very different picture: a society in which most people old enough to understand what might happen to them lived in permanent dread. Moon goes so far as to suggest the entire population was afflicted my mental illness as a result.
    
    That last is probably a bit too extreme, but there is no doubt that being killed and eaten was a very real possibility. No wonder the sharper chiefs welcomed the Brits and the order they brought.

      James Belich notably discerned seven coloured ‘lenses’ through which Maori were viewed by Europeans in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. I think your vison of Maori in the contact and early colonisation era is likely one seen through Belich’s ‘black’ or ‘red’ lens – Maori seen as inherently ferocious, chronically warlike, cannibals.

        Let’s take those in order: inherently ferocious…from the very first contact in October 1769 Maori encountering whites – and each other – performed haka which I think could be fairly called “inherently ferocious”. To this very day, “Maori Welcomes” appear to the often bemused recipients to be aggressive rather than friendly.
        
        “chronically warlike”…I know you have some trouble with English, but “chronic” means something that is continuous; an ongoing state of affairs. I think the Musket Wars which lasted from about 1815 to 1840 – during which it is estimated that 40,000 Maori, or half the population was killed – would qualify as “chronically warlike”
        
        Cannibalism…surely you are not an adherent to the ridiculous idea popular in the ’70’s that all the stories of those who came into contact with Maori – starting with Cook, and progressing to contact with sealers and whalers – made up the accounts of cannibalism that they saw and recorded? You are not that dumb, surely?

        Read an account of the Maori behaviour when they were the dreaded colonisers. In 1835 Maori invaded the Chatham Islands and proceeded to commit genocide. Accounts of the slavery, rape and cannibalism committed on the peaceful Chatham Islanders are truly stomach churning.
        Bring this up and you will be greeted with howls of outrage.

        …but if you are that dumb Milky, I can recommend a series currently on Netflix – narrated by Sam Neil – which covers all three of Cook’s Pacific voyages. It includes some drivel by some pious Maori down in the Sounds trying to explain away the killing and eating of 10 of Cook’s men – crew of his sister ship on his second voyage. Are they taking credit for something which never happened?

        There is no Maori account of the very first European encounter , with the Dutch , which ended with death .
        
        The tribe involved Ngati Tumatakokiri were eventually annihilated , and with them presumably any verbal account of Tasman’s visit.
        
        “Although they fought valiantly Tūmatakōkiri, as an iwi, were finally annihilated during battles in the Paparoa Ranges north of Greymouth in about 1810-1812. Ngāti Apa assumed authority over north-west Nelson, Ngāi Tahu dominated their former West Coast lands, and Ngāti Kuia controlled eastern Tasman Bay.

        David, I saw that series when it was on broadcast television some years ago. Quite good, but not as good as his documentary on NZ film, Cinema of Unease. You will learn more about the great navigator from reading Beaglehole’s still standard biography.
        I am sorry to read that you have not studied much New Zealand history. One of the many traps into which the pseudo-intellectuals may fall is that of reading only the arguments with which they already agree. Any person who has not read Keith Sinclair (0r W H Oliver), Belich and King is unlikely to gain much benefit from a cursory read of one of Moon’s excellent books.       No I have not read the book but I get the picture.
      
      I recall one of the Government Ministers assured folk in Hawkes Bay that they had nothing to fear from violent gang members, mostly Maori, unless they were in a rival gang.
      
      Shortly afterwards a Maori gang member visiting Christchurch from Hawkes Bay punched a totally random young man having a few drinks with his friends in Christchurch. He has permanent brain damage.
      
      I went out for dinner in Christchurch last night down in the Avon River precinct. I got an Uber straight there and straight home.
      Now
      A few years ago I might have gone for a walk afterwards. No way now.

  Debate is restricted and often seriously attacked.
  Often by a ‘groundswell’ from people who’s opinions are largely formed as a result of that same media.
  Again scientists is being used as one of the ways to reduce comment.
  Good information and good debate lead to good decisions.

    Very few political leaders feels the need to consult a predecessor. Muldoon rejected any suggestion that John Marshall could in any way help him. Lange packed Rowling off to Washington to cope with angry Americans. Jim McLay was dispatched to the IWC, Mike Moore booted off the the ITO and then Washington. And so on. I doubt that John Key ever felt the need to seek the opinions of Shipley or Brash, and he had Bill English happily back tasked with the accountancy supervision. Can anyone imagine Ardern seeking advice on leadership from Little, Cunliffe or Shearer?

The soaring suicide rates among NZ’s youth is an indictment of the climate of fear that the Labour government has visited upon our country. Hendy’s idiotic prediction this week (from Jacinda’s ‘pulpit of truth’ no less) of 7000 covid deaths was the last straw. The heavy fear-drenched misinformation intentionally spewed out by our idiot PM Jacinda and her acolytes (via the compliant dysfunctional media) is the most unforgivable part of the anxiety pumped into our innocent vulnerable youngsters. Jacinda’s power-crazed selfishness, at the expense of the nation’s children in this case, proves her claims of concern for the mental health of NZers are pure bullshit.

The 50% of NZ’s voter population that support Jacinda are the enablers of this catastrophe, and they will find themselves on the wrong side of history. Her apologist supporters deserve to suffer even more than the victims of this fear-porn, and I will never let them forget it.

Ok, so before we get on to another 300 posts about Covid 19 on general debate today – what about the rugby – NZ v SA?
SA played a boring, thuggish game- as always.
Wouldn’t mind that if they scored a try or two (which is the purpose of the game), but apart from the fluke one they got at the start as the result of an All Blacks error, they never looked like scoring one.
Interesting that one of the comments made by AB’s captain Ardie Savea afterwards was that he was pleased he didn’t get injured – which puts quite a different perspective on the whole proceedings really.

  It was one of the best test matches in several years – world champion versus top-ranked side. Good, hard attritional stuff. Such physical encounters are bound to produce injuries as players commit to the intensity that is unmatched in any other rugby rivalry.
  The money that poured into the TAB backing NZ reflected smug Kiwi punters expectations of a runaway win, or a ridiculous try-fest (39-32 sort of score).

  SA was deliberately slow to line-outs and scrums and their tactical injuries were all part of slowing the game down which was IMO a deliberate part of their game-plan. The constant kicking from their half-back even when they were on attack proved to me their current coach’s expertise is limited to coaching tactics whereby a bunch of fatties can walk around the field and occasionally fall on a loose ball and feed it back to their half-back so he can kick it again.
  I don’t think I’ve seen that referee before but he sure blew the pea out of the whistle.

    I fear that the outbreaks that result from all communicable diseases coming roaring back, will become the pretext for permanent tyranny, which the stupid majority that are responsible for allowing us to be taken to where we already are, will also go along with. I’d like to give some advice to the incoming National/Act administration in 2023 on tax policy.

1) At least initially forget about the state of the government books (hint they will be horrendous) and immediately significantly cut personal & company tax and GST. You need to be able to fight the 2026 election with the strapline that labour will increase everyone taxes.

2) It is particularly critical that the personal tax policy includes a tax free allowance for the first $X worth of income. This enables you to argue in 2026 that any tax increase will disadvantage working low income people.

Do not make the mistake that JK & BE made and spend nine years carefully re-building the books without fundamentally changing the tax system for the next Grant Robertson to blow it all away!

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta has no plans to back down from multimillion-dollar Three Waters reforms despite protesting and backlash from some councils.
Demonstrators stormed Nelson City Council on Thursday in protest of the reforms, which would see four publicly-owned entities take responsibility from 67 councils for drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure.
It came as councillors met to discuss the reforms and provide feedback to the Government. Nelson City Council has not made a definitive decision to support the reforms, but Auckland Council is firmly against the proposals.

… National MP Barbara Kuriger asked Mahuta in Parliament if she would consider pausing the reforms given Local Government NZ and some mayors, councils, and communities have called for her to do so.
“No,” Mahuta responded.

… Local Government New Zealand has until October 1 to express their concerns to Mahuta. But Local Government NZ president Stuart Crosby said there needed to be “more time to work through the key outstanding issues.
– like perhaps a democratic referendum for each council’s ratepayers as to whether they want this Labourless Government of non-delivery to steal their 3 water assets?

    But whether all tribes in an area can form a working relationship together will be worth watching.
    
    Ngapuhi will try and dominate the Northern district… but will the urban Auckland Maori groups go along with them?
    
    Central & western is a big mix…and Waikato-Tainui will try and dominate… but there’s Tuhoe, Tuwharatoa, Ngati Awa and Whanganui tribes also involved.
    
    Eastern & Southern NI and Top of NI will be dominated by Ngati Porou and Ngati Kahungunu.
    I think they will work ok together.
    
    Southern will be Ngai Tahu.

  This is from an online site on terms the transgender people would like avoided, because they “create microaggressions”:
  
  – Born a girl, born a boy, biologically male, biologically female.
  
  – Biological sex is considered deeply problematic and should *never* be used. It has become a weaponized term used politically against the trans community, and is inherently incoherent when discussing transgender people. In general, when an individual uses this, they *mean* to say, “sex/gender assigned at birth.”
  
  – Trans with an asterisk (*) was once used to indicate that the term was an inclusive umbrella for many genders, but the asterisk has since been discarded as at best unnecessary and at worst

Bit of a new issue in health at the moment. Non-maori are actively being de-prioritised off hospital waiting lists and replaced by maori.

A further issue then occurs because maori are less likely to attend scheduled appointments, leaving (very costly) equipment unused and staff idle .

I would love an investigative journalist to research the extent of this … I hear these things are occurring but I don’t know the numbers. Certainly any drop in efficiency will result in worsening public health.

ie, how many non-maori are being ‘de-prioritised’ for medical treatment and replaced by a maori.

Secondly, how many of these maori are failing to turn up to their appointment?

Bit of a government secret just now.

    I wonder why the media doesn’t report on this.
    Could it be the tens of millions the government has dished out to only those who encourage their agenda? I’m sure if they reported on this, that would be in violation of the rules they set out.
    Meanwhile just tonight Newshub reported on a guy who remembers suppression of Te Reo in schools and wants the govt to make an apology when it was their own people who signed a petition to encourage these things, even going as far to say:
    “There should not be a word of Maori allowed to be spoken in the school, and the master, his wife and children should be persons altogether ignorant of the Maori language”
    – Wiri Te Hakiro and 336 others.

  It rings true. There is a lot of talk about ensuring equal OUTCOMES. It will be MUCH easier to do this by increasing the death rates for non-maori for any given disease.
  I wonder if we put 80% of the resources in health at the disposal of 20% of the population, could we achieve equality of life expectancy so Maori did not suffer from the consequences of poor choices?
  Alternatively, could we achieve equal life expectancy for men and women if we simply denied women access to the health system?
  That sounds fair – doesn’t it???
  Likewise with incarceration rates. Maybe the cops should just round up some random whites and lock them up so that we have a fair prison system where all races are proportionally represented.

The latest lockdown casualty is my daughter’s relationship. They had been together for a year, were very happy, but 6 weeks of not seeing each other in person has taken the inevitable toll.
Once this “short, sharp” lockdown got to the two week point I did worry that this young relationship might not be able to withstand the separation. They are in their 20s, and I know there is nothing to say things would have worked out anyway, but I have no doubt that the lockdown has caused this breakup today.
To make matters worse, she works in hospitality so can’t even distract herself with being busy at work, or going out with girlfriends. I can’t even take her to a cafe, or bowling etc to break up her day.

I am sure that fact that they are over 75% of total population for at least one jab was highly relevant to their decision. Just about everyone who gets the first jab goes on to get the second.

I imagine the 75% is about 85% of those who are eligible, being those over 12.

So we have a ways to go to catch up to Norway. We are currently at 66% (of total population) for first and second jabs, so we are a full 10% behind Norway.
