Read the below article regarding the new radio station planned for the New Year with Tova O’Brian being hailed as the foil to the very successful ZB Moring show with Mike Hosking. With Hosking, and his wife’s show, just receiving the highest ratings in record, I say good luck Tova. I do get the impression Ms O’Brian lives in a bubble of self-importance, but may be in for a real shock when she has to ‘talk’ to the general public and hear the reality of what’s happening out in NZ and what people really think of the current government.
The new entities head of talk and news, Dallas Gurney, takes a cheap shot at Peter Williams and Sean Plunket’s old shows, yet they were also rating topping so I guess we can see where Gurney intends to go and what his agenda will be.

    I remember one evening leaving a National party conference in Christchurch and heading for the pub. It was quiet and I saw Tova about to do a piece to camera. I stepped quietly into the shadows. She couldn’t get her lines right and eventually threw a Hussey fit at the poor cameraman because of her failures. Says something about her character. She won’t survive talkback where her opinion is questioned. I bet she insists on a big red “ cut” button on her desk.

    Doomed to fail. Left leaning talk back never works. Someone started one in the states once and it failed miserably. For a start left wing people don’t listen to talk back. Neither do young people. And good luck going up against Mike Hosking. On the other side they are up against National Radio. And Tova? No chance. They need Paul Henry and he’s too busy enjoying himself. Will be gone in no time.

    Unfortunately Tova is going to get all the government announcements the night before and Mike won’t. Also Jacinda will appear exclusively on Tova’s show in the morning with any ‘good news’ she has to declare. I don’t think it will dent Mike’s ratings though, he’s got a pretty solid following. I even get up at 5am to listen to Kate, who is also great.

      You can listen to NewstalkZB on their website, and it allows you to go back up to 7 days I think. I use it to listen to Kate’s program at a more civilised hour. 🙂

      Excellent news! That Stuff/McConnell article (and IIRC and earlier article of his too) misrepresented the Banks/Plunket/Williams’ departures by tarring the gentlemen in question with falsehoods, so it would be great if Stuff/McConnell could “correct the record”.
      
      Also another “target” to be addressed is the BSA (Broadcasting Standards Authority). Their rulings against Sean Plunket (and to a degree John Banks) were overtly political IMO and based prematurely on “hate speech” laws for guidance, which do not exist (as no such law has been passed), therefore could be “unsafe” legally, and ought to be challenged?

  It’s not binary; she doesn’t have to rate higher than Hosking to be a commercial success. As a station they only need to attract enough listners to give them an acceptable return on investment.
  
  Whether or not they’ll be able to do that I have no idea, but it’s probably reasonable to assume that they know their market better than we do, and have done their research.

  Firstly, why use the same name for a new radio station that was first used by Paul Henry in the 1990’s? Hardly original, and “Today” seems more suited a lightweight tv breakfast/morning show, rather than a “talk radio show”.
  
  Secondly, “Today FM” still doesn’t have a FM frequency for the major Auckland market (and other cities like Tauranga according to a Newsroom article), which will be ratings suicide when up against Newstalk ZB (and Radio NZ). I would guess this was a major hindrance for MagicTalk ratings, so why would it be any different for Today FM?
  
  Thirdly, looks like the station’s focus is somewhat “younger” (and “centrist” … read that as centre-left) and will be “more politically correct” (woke), so will it end up “bland” as it tries to be “non-controversial”, which suggests diversity of opinion will be lacking? If we want lack of diversity of opinion we have Radio NZ so why have another network wanting to emulate RNZ?
  
  Fourthly, no mention of overnight talkback! Can they not bring back the affable and reassuring Tony Amos? Otherwise who wants to listen to a music jukebox or repeated highlights? And what about the weekends? Originally MagicTalk ran more live shows in the weekends (Hayden Rickard was great)!
  
  As for the new hosts they have some good talent but some choices seem odd.
  
  I have no issue with Tova on breakfast (but reckon she will compete more with the stale RNZ Morning Report leftie audience that are aghast at the smug arrogance of its hosts Ferguson and Dann). For me I ditched Morning Report for Hosking on ZB and have no regrets.
  
  Duncan Garner in the morning …. I remember him doing Radio Live drive and although entertaining Garner has this habit of talking alot of crap (he used to trash National all the time with ridiculous statements), might have a quick listen but I have found Kerre Woodham on ZB quite refreshing of late as she bashes the govt’s incompetence and because of her empathy there have been interesting discussions with callers of late that have been hard done by the govt’s covid response. Quite eye opening.
  
  Thank goodness they have retained Leah Panapa … but matching her up with Mark Richardson? I can tolerate Richardson as the smart ass commentator but to put up with him as a co-host for 3-4 hours? No way! To be fair to Danny Watson, after the initial “awkwardness” of Leah and Danny co-hosting the two of them managed to “make it work” and were sounding quite good until they were split up upon Peter Williams’ departure. Looks like Danny misses out in the new lineup, I know people here said they didn’t like him (and yes at times it was testing) but what I worked out was despite Danny’s leftie stance he was a “conservative” at heart and believed in personal responsibility (unlike the rest of the liberal left).
  
  But up against the boring toned sleepy sounding afternoon hosts on ZB (Simon Barnett & co) thankfully Leah will outshine them – go Leah!
  
  Apart from Leah and Pollie in the evening (she did a guest show a year or two ago and was good, besides better her than Marcus Lush of course) I don’t think I’ll be tuning in much to Today FM but good luck I suppose.

  Tova announced on TV yesterday morning after the caucus was finishing up that Judith Collins was gone and Luxon was the new National Party leader.

Just reflecting on how this drama started.

I was a little surprised to read Jaqui Dean saying that she had still not got over the remarks by Simon Bridges that she overheard when he was conducting a conversation with other people.

“At the time there was an apology, but subsequently it has continued to play on my mind and with the recent reviews that have occurred in Parliament the feelings have been brought back up.”

It is a reminder that these days anything you say or post online can land you in trouble years later, when you have forgotten about it. Or you may be oblivious that it ever caused offence. But there is this ticking time bomb, waiting for someone to set it off.

I understand that workplaces need to be inclusive and I don’t think that sexual banter is appropriate in a work setting. But in work settings people talk about personal stuff. That is how people bond. And you just never know when you are going to press the wrong button.

I’m buggered if I know what the whole story is on this, but if the silly tart was really still “hurting” over something she overheard five years ago which wasn’t even directed at her – and arguably wasn’t even sexual banter so much as discussing an old wives tale – then she’s in the wrong fucking job.
    
    She’s 64 years old FFS not 13. It’s a bit late to advise her to get out more. She should quit politics immediately and go back to the farm.

        Way back in the day, it was also women that repeated this stuff. Before modern scientific times (way before trained midwives) there were women who assisted in such matters. Priests (?) also looked at the flight path of birds and the entrails of slain animals on certain matters. I’m sure Henry VIII was given lots of advice on how to produce a son.
        So the topic surely cant be an issue as its merely history, however the manner in which it is discussed.
        And surely JD should have rebuked him at the time.

        Jacqui Dean, referred to by David Garrett as a cardboard cutout who has not done anything useful in 15 years, is my local M.P. Last year prior to the election she came to town and held a meeting cup of tea thing, but only National Party Members were allowed to go. Her election figures went from a 2017 majority of 12,816 to 3168 in this heartland rural electorate. She is part of the problem.

  The thing is, I always pictured Collins as the sort of person that would have told Jacqui to put on he big girl pants, and not be such a softy about it, or in other words, one of us.
  
  That she took this action indicates she wasn’t up to the job, and Dean needs to reflect on her conduct as well, given the fallout it’s caused.
  
  Parliament is not for the overly sensitive.

    if anything it’s an indication of the new era we’re in , the Wokozoic , where adversaries will use the latest taboo to destroy their enemies , all in the name of “equality”.
    
    As an aside , until yesterday all our political parties ( bar Act , which has senior femmes) were led or “co led” ( another Wokism) by persons with vaginas , as is our HoS and her representative here .

        I’ve saw enough from the inside to decline to take on an MP’s role. They are collectively the highest paid social workers in the country and Labour run to a might is right, no prisoners regime–fundamentally bullies. Any Opposition member and their families has a very hard time.
        
        Truth is frequently murky but as an investigator it’s been my job to pick my way through the smoke screen. I am certain about the bribed media and their taking out MP’s. This apology for an amateur wannabe commie govt whakaArdern is close to criminal in its media bribery.

        People never heard of Deane? Fair enough, but it surprises me that in forums like this where everyone’s up to their eyeballs in politics, know all the ins and outs and are experts on what politicians should be doing, don’t even know the MPs.

  This is what was surprising. “The overarching objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power to stay in power”. The Party needs to frame this and hang it in its Caucus room in Parliament and the Boardroom at 41 Pipitea St. I wonder whether Ms Dean thought of this when she re-surfaced her complaint or whether she gave the whole story including that the incident occurred five years ago. If she omitted the age of the complaint or some of the detail to enhance the impact of her complaint (like schoolkids do when complaining to the teacher) then she misled her leader. She arguably has handed Jacinda the next two elections on a plate all because an upset ego got in the way of the reason she was in politics.
  If it were not for Winston’s hovering presence I would argue that Ms Dean and Ms Collins should immediately resign their seats (along with Mr Muller). I consider that given the unstable nature of the National Party caucus one or more by-elections seem inevitable in the current Parliamentary term and Winston has a very good chance of getting back in Parliament.

      Party volunteers may have longer memories and think ‘blow it, there is no point in working for the Party. Why bother’. While the stalwarts would mostly remain eg the Board, Regional, Electorate and Branch Chairs, Secretaries and Treasurers, they could find it hard finding phone bank callers, leaflet droppers, hoarding putter-uppers, scrutineers and all those who help put MP’s into office. They deserve far better from Caucus (rather a few elements of Caucus) than Caucus has delivered in the last few days.

  A few years ago I was in the lunch room getting a coffee out of the machine and two women sitting at the nearby table were discussing tampon fit or some such. So what? Should that have got them fired? How about discussing breast feeding?
  
  These are no longer the Victorian ages.
  
  If two women, instead of two men, had been discussing methods to conceive a girl would Dean have felt uncomfortable? Does it only make her uncomfortable because men were saying it?

    There are at least two options here:
    
    A) Dean and Collins were putting their heads together to come up with some dirt to sling and Dean recalled the indecent from 5 years ago. Collins fired her canon, Dean realised that this didn’t work and is now backpedaling to rebuild her bridges with the caucus.
    
    B) Dean told Collins of this incident in passing intending no consequences. Collins then independently built this into a weapon and fired it, throwing Dean under the bus. Dean was really blameless in the mess and it was all Collins’ doing.
    
    I am inclined to go with (A), mainly because Dean’s story has changed a lot in the last 24 hours. Consider what Dean is saying:
    * She started off with the statement about how hurt she felt, how it had not been addressed 5 years ago and how it had flared up again (and thus needed to be addressed) – clearly trying to fan anti-Bridges sentiment.
    * She then flips to “needing privacy”.
    * And now that it backfired, she says she didn’t intend for anything to happen.
    
    So within 24 hours it has been almost a complete about face. Horseshit lady.

  Much more is revealed in this mornings ODT where, according to Dean, she discussed Bridges’s comment with Collins some weeks ago in relation to work being done on behaviour in Parliament. According to Dean, she was surprised to see this discussion used as an excuse to roll Bridges.
  
  Collins says that she only heard of the Bridges comments in the previous day before demoting him. Collins also said that she had the unanimous support of the National Party Board which also turns out to be incorrect.
  
  The only conclusion to be drawn is that Collins lied and was determined to bring down Bridges when she realised that she no longer had the support of caucus as Leader.
  
  But Dean is also either stupid or naive. I think a mixture of the two. And as such, if I was her, I’d be letting her electorate know they need to find a replacement. The South is not well served by National Party members despite it being the home of many traditional strong rural communities. Time to look hard in those areas and identify some candidates with traditional values.

  I reckon Dean and Collins cooked this up between them. Collins had a rush of blood to the head having heard Simon was going to roll her so decided to get in first. If she was ethical and had some morals ( both a distant stranger to pollies) she would have worked out a solution behind closed doors then annouced she was resigning as Leader and introduced the new Leader and Deputy if Shane wasnt going to continue.
  That would have taken the wind out of the medias sails and minimised any support damage.
  
  Instead of being big and making it about the Party Collins as with all pollies made it about her and that why I have absolutely no time or respect for the political class.

      From what I gather viruses mutate as you say. When left alone they mutate to become more transmissible but lest dangerous. Viruses don’t normally want to kill the host. They want to survive.
      Vaccinating heavily during an actual pandemic is apparently not a very smart thing to do, otherwise you force the virus to mutate faster and more aggressively. Any new and dangerous strains will be due to the aggressive vaccination programmes.
      
      The Whoreald article is not there because it is newsworthy, it is there to support Ardern’s insane drive to jab everyone, pure and simple. This was never about health.

        No, having the virus spread a lot gives it the chance to mutate. The virus doesn’t care if it kills its host if its still able to efficiently spread, if it was killing people quickly then a weaker strain may eventuate but given how long people are infectious with covid it doesn’t seem to matter how deadly the disease is. Could argue that lockdowns and quarantine for those sick would result in weaker strains as stronger strains will result in reduced chance of transmissiblilty due to lockdowns and/or quarantines.

Some smart investigation over at BusinessDesk (not currently behind the paywall) based mainly on OIA requests. Sadly the OIA responses were egregiously out of time and with rather important Information redacted, ignored, or eventually said to not exist.

A targeted MP is denied right of reply or the words are so twisted as to give a negative message. Any fightback is itself twisted. The truth is irrelevant compared to the smoke generated.
        
        If I was running the show at present I would be tempted to pull all the Opposition MP’s out of Parliament. That would tell Ardern and her mobsters they had a real fight. Could they continue on their own, would the Gov General allow them?
        
        We have a constitutional problem with a rogue government courtesy of MMP, Winston and Covid with and underlying hidden WEF agenda seemingly being implemented by their alumni PM. How do we get rid of them. NZ cannot afford the delay or the bill for the future.

Clearly you need to be able to have a few at home for if you are about to go somewhere with people at high risk, or have a bit of a tickle in your throat. So I’ve got symptoms and I think I have COVID….let me wander down to my local pharmacy and perform the test there, spreading the virus to everyone on the way including the poor pharmacist! The idea is you keep a bunch of them in your cupboard for when you might need them, if it comes up positive you self-isolate.
      
      To borrow a description from Jordan Peterson, this is yet another example of Labour’s low resolution thinking.

  I was offered one last week prior to an appointment with an eye specialist. I have zero symptoms and have been nowhere of risk. I live VERY rural. I asked what was the point and was told so the doctor didn’t have to wear all of the PPE to see me. I was considering it so as not to inconvenience the doctor, but I asked the nurse, how accurate is it? He told me “around 50%”! So I run the risk of being deemed coid positive and all the shit that comes with that based on a coin toss?? Not a chance.
  As it turns out, when I got in to see the doctor he didn’t bother with the PPE anyway so he obviously wasn’t terrified.
  The rapid antigen tests might be useful, but I don’t know where!! How can a test that is only 50% accurate be of any use for anything? The toss of a coin would be just as reliable.

    50% accurate is nothing like a coin toss unless half of people tested are positive. It dosnt mean that it gets it right half the time, it means a true positive (as defined by PCR i suspect) is accurately identified half the time. So the real chances of the test being wrong are actually quite small. Take 2 or 3 of them and if they are all the same you can be pretty sure the result would be the same as the PCR.

      It’s a completely meaningless basis for a vaccine certificate scheme. Totally inane.
      “True positive as defined by PCR”. That has to be the joke of the year. You have no concept about how the PCR test works. Or do you also claim it’s the “gold standard”? You are “dreamin mate”.

    The Co. I work for has a head office with support staff in the SI, and their preferred option for junior support staff is to work from the communal office as it accelerates staff learning. They have at least some staff who don’t want the Fizzer Vax, and given my stand and “maturity” the boss and I discussed some company policy. My “ideal” recommendation was for all staff to have a rapid antigen test, say every 2 weeks. Any positive test and you had to work from home for X days and only return after a negative test.
    To me this would be a good use of Rapid Antigen tests.

    Kev as per my personal experience a week ago, I was told by the nurse that the Rapid Antigen Test is 49-50% accurate. If it comes up positive you are required to have the also inaccurate PCR test. Presuming it is still done at ct of 40 as per the OIA that revealed that figure.

“Deprivation is preventing access to the Pfizer vaccine”: Proof is a graph showing higher deprivation and lower vaccination rates correlate. As always, correlation is not causation.

Deprivation does not “prevent” access to the Pfizer vaccine. Far more likely it is some common factor that causes both.

If we graphed vaccination vs KFC consumption, or vaccination vs failing WOF, or vaccination vs education, or vaccination vs wagging school, or vaccinations vs amount of benefit recieved we’d very likely see the same trends.

Does eating KFC prevent you from accessing the vaccine? Does wagging school? Does getting the dole? Nope.

Instead these are all markers for taking the loser offramp of the highway of life.

Perhaps Espiner thinks more people would get vaccinated if they got less dole? I guess she would ignore that graph.

Nope. The only possible cause is systemic racism in the health system. And the only possible solution is to make it even more racist.

    I was in hospital last month after a suspected stroke. I was tended to by two lovely Irish women doctors, the nursing staff were mostly Filipina and Indian – they called everybody ‘darling’ – and in the night my blood pressure was monitored by a lovely Maori nurse.
    The most golden moment of all was the elderly Maori or Pacific Island nurse aid who asked me at 10pm, when I was admitted to the ward, if I’d had anything to eat.
    I hadn’t eaten since about midday. ‘You just lie there, darling, and I’ll get a meal together for you.’
    It was chicken with vegies. And it was beautiful. I’ve never complained about hospital food.
    But what you know what was the best bit? When I was discharged the next day and no-one presented me with a bill.

    With any luck not me! This divisive stuff has now reached the point where I’m not too sure I want to be treated by doctors who are not culturally sensitive (to my culture, that is). What a cockup. One of the finest doctors I know (and I worked in the medical field for 35 years) is a gay Maori. No cultural BS with him – he just gets on with treating every patient superbly. But he is 50. The likes of these new doctors peddling their woke racism are a different breed and I’d like them to keep well away from me.

  There are certainly things these days that you simply cannot say in certain settings, and that net is being cast wider. For example any public servant that questioned the “Maori Science” orthodoxy would have a career ending experience. It is simply not a subject that is open for debate.     The impact isn’t determined by the largest contributor; it’s cumulative.
    
    Newspapers in the lounge is something that he could change; short of replacing aircraft with push bikes (which probably wouldn’t make for a compelling business model for Air NZ with anyone but the greenies) there’s not a lot they can do about the 10 billion litres of Jet A1.
    
    And I’m sure that if you’d like to bring your own cup they’d be happy to fill it.

    That’s what all corporations do. Another example is getting rid of plastic bags by the supermarkets. Countdown’s done it voluntarily before the law banning the bags was passed. How much additional income (and profit) it resulted in?
    Remember reading a story about an airline reducing number of olives in onboard meals by one. Apparently it resulted in the saving of 10 cents per olive. Not much if you carry 1000 passengers annually. Quite a lot if you carry 50 million of them.

    The point is more that the Nats should be convincing people as to why their principles and ideas will lead to a better society than labours (or ACTs). They shouldn’t be trying to create principles around a focus group of swing voters. Doing so results in ever changing inconsistent principles where no one knows what they stand for, and them always heading more and more to the left, rather than convincing people why the principles of the right will lead to a better and more prosperous society for all.
    
    Labour (and the left generally) are actually not bad at this, as horrible as their principles are, and as poor as their arguments are and this is why the west is slowly creeping left for so long.

I came across this RNZ article from April that has not aged well. Skip to 6.30 in the clip to hear the Ardern announce, with manic enthusiasm that would terrify body language experts everywhere, that if you get the vaccine ‘you won’t get sick and you won’t die’. I can’t imagine even medical experts would consider it appropriate to tell people that they won’t die if they take a certain medical treatment. This is utter insanity.

    Yes well the latest data I’ve seen has 15 deaths from this outbreak (plus one yesterday, details unknown).
    Of the 15, 5 were vaxxed and 10 were not.
    Of the 10, one sided of lead poisoning and one was so old and sick she couldn’t have the vax.
    Pity they don’t provide more details on the people who die to support informed consent.

      Yup, my double jabbed mother still died in August with CV19 in both lungs.
      
      She was riddled with cancer and had a heart condition so the CV19 probably only nudged her death by a few weeks.
      
      According to the CDC stats on CV19 deaths:
      * 5% only list CV19 as the cause of death. This is approximately half the death rate of road fatalities.
      * On average they have 4 comorbidities – clearly already very sick people.
      
      Clearly CV19 is not really killing them in great numbers. For the most part it is just speeding things up a bit.

        Sorry for your loss and thank you for your honesty. It is something that has been sadly missing through most of the last couple of years.
        It is always sad losing a loved one no matter what the cause. I watched my father struggle with throat cancer and in the end it was relief as much as sadness. Watching him slowly choke to death wasn’t pleasant.

      Bronny – their is no informed consent in the vaccine roll out. Not many people are aware of the Health and Disability’s “Patients Code of Rights”. We are all patients as the vaccine is a “health issue” and No’s 1 – 3 are particularly relevant at this time and I think Jacinda needs to take heed of No 4.
      
      1) a right to receive the information you need to make decisions about your health and about any tests, procedures or treatments
      2) a right to have information provided in a way that you understand
      3) a right to make an informed choice and give your informed consent before you undergo a test, procedure or treatment
      4) a right to be treated with respect and dignity, taking into account your cultural needs and values
      5) a right to have a support person with you, at most times
      6) a right to services being provided with reasonable care and skill
      7) a right to complain about a provider, in a way that is appropriate for you.

      The MoH website doesn’t offer that data detail because it would undermine the gov propaganda. The PM said in late Aug: “Delta is seeking out the unvaccinated” in response to over 500 vulnerable people (Pacifica and Maori) reported in the first 800 cases of the Delta outbreak (and low vaccination rates at that time) ……….yet I suggest we have experienced a disproportionately low death rate since….then 26 deaths now 42 deaths, some 12 weeks on. Occam’s razor: Collins was on a hiding to nothing as National leader and simply constructed a situation in which the caucus would have no choice but to remove her.

Why not simply resign? Because to resign is to admit defeat, to show you can’t handle the jandal, and Collins’ personality couldn’t tolerate that legacy.

This way she’s got plausible deniability: she maintains she did the morally right thing by demoting Bridges and if she went down because of it, she’s a martyr.

I mean, Winston Peters has built his entire career on the same strategy.

I was just reflecting this morning that it is exactly 61 years since Holyoake began his 12-year tenure as prime minister. It is surely not impossible for the national party to go back to what has worked in the past, and find a new Holyoake, Muldoon, Bolger or Key.

If we are to diagnose how the National Party got into this position of existential peril, we would need to consider Epsom. The seat repeatedly gifted to an external agent of the right. It seemed so innocuous. Piss off the left with some electoral hi-jinx that skews representation. Why you can even get a few days of media coverage of the agent candidate by inviting the media along for the ‘cup of tea’ (rub the left’s nose in it) meeting.

Now as well as being a smear on the Nat’s democratic credentials it turns out to be a collosal fuck up of an idea. A major party with a proud history of steering the destiny of the nation being eaten alive by a cancer they welcomed in. Watching as a collection of fresh faced nobodies with the wit and wisdom of an unwritten book (but a snappy smiley cover), now eat their lunch and take their date home.

Some might see unintended consequences. I see karma.

    Some people seem to forget that Bolger dumped Richardson precisely because her policies almost cost him re-election in 1993. Bolger probably would have won in 1999 too, had some of the ideologues not revolted against his pragmatism.
    And John Key, of course, flirted with more economic reform (remember “catching up with Australia”?), but took the traditional, pragmatic national party approach of better being a long-lasting government than a radical government.

I bet that is producing some powerfully destructive emotional states in both the actors and their long suffering supporters.

    In my suburb there is a fantastic op shop run by a local organisation who donate the profits to our local schools and children’s groups. That is good enough for me to support them.
    The Sallies lost me 20 years ago when my Mum rang them up to see if they wanted an old lounge set she had which was still in great condition but needed to be picked up. Apparently that was too hard so Women’s Refuge got it.

  I’ve found a pathway to Indonesia that only requires one dose of the vaxx. So I can get one Pfizer shot, travel to Bali, quarantine for 5 days and assuming I return a negative Covid test I’m in.
  If I can get the Novavax there (since it’s in Indonesia) then that’s my plan.
  And 6 months in Bali while NZ suffers through winter.

I listened to this yesterday. Mike Hosking interviewing Jeremy Clarkson about his new book Diddly Squat, and the unexpected success of Clarksons Farm on Amazon (brilliant show, you must watch it)

Hosking asks Clarkson about when he got sick with the ‘Rona and Clarksons response was that despite being in the worst demographic (ex heavy smoker, old, fat, and who has battled pneumonia) he’s never been “less sick”

We need to remember, despite the FEAR pushed by Our Glorious Leader and the MSM, that while C19 can be fatal, for many people it’s just like a bad cold.

  I spoke directly to a friend in Orange County in the US yesterday. Asked him how it was all going. He’s 60, said most of his friends had had it, they all basically said it was “a gnarly cold”. One of his buddies had died. His words to me were “but he was over 300 pounds, diabetic and had heart issues, not the healthiest dude on the planet”. It was totally expected, flu would have killed him too.
  Similar story from personal friends in Ireland. The whole family got it, 2 kids bounced through it in a couple of days, the husband in his 60s was worse and it lasted a week. His wife joked about his “man flu” and how it was great she got the TV remote control for a week. He came right, she got it. She said it was a bit shit for 3 0r 4 days but all back to normal again.
  It’s clear this is the outcome. If you’re old, obese or have serious underlying health issues you are at risk. Act accordingly. But you are at risk from many things so the obsession with covid is insane.

    If you are unvaxxed otherwise healthy and catch covid you still have more than 10x higher chance of dying of something other than covid in the next year. If vaxxed it is more than 100x. Spending any thought or action on avoiding covid is pointless for the large majority of people. For those with comorbidities I am sorry, but it is unfair to ask whole population to upend their lives on hold for your benefit, get vaccinated and shose how you want to live your life

  In NZ ~75% of stroke victims survive. About six a day don’t. Then there’s heart attacks, various cancers, diabetes, failed kidneys, livers . . . .
  Jeremy Clarkson may have brushed off covid, but by the sounds of things he’s a prime candidate for for one of those other problems. If anyone is looking for further accurate insight into what is happening with covid management this article is excellent.
In a nutshell, the bureaucrats and work from homers who are all very important people (if you just ask them) can sense that vaccines are not effective at stopping covid and are dead scared the virus is now coming for them. The workers who have nearly all now had covid are no longer scared of it as they have either had it or know someone who has. The knee jerk reaction has been to lock everyone down to hide from the virus.
Part 2 of the article explains how the general population now is better informed than our decision makers who are being fed data from compliant, approval seeking morons.
This is well worth 10 minutes, and a lot makes sense afterwards.

I always liked Judith Collins ( without ever meeting her ) and I could not figure why so few people, especially women , felt the same. Turns out all those people who had doubts were right.

It looks to me as though Collins seized on the discussion Dean had with here some time ago and asked her to front at a presser. She also had a chat with Reti and asked him for support. They probably both should have told her to back off but one thing we have been asking the Nats for is Unity and they may have been trying to provide that. Collins then seems to have misrepresented the position of the Board.

It is an appalling piece of political vandalism and duplicity which validates all the concerns the electorate had about honesty ( oravida ) , lack of judgement and her personal ambition .

The bright spot for Bridges is that if these five year old comments were the best she could do he must be squeaky clean.

I have worked in a government agency in which I was the only male on the floor. I am not a prude but I did ask my manager if she could talk to these 20-23-year-olds because their descriptions of their sexual activities, and of their reproductive difficulties, were a bit too graphic.
I brought up daughters. I helped them navigate their puberty. I bought the pads and the tampons and the Ibuprofen. I washed their bloodied clothing and bedding if periods arrived unexpectedly.
So there’s nothing new about that there for me.
What I found was that their talk seemed to be deliberate in my presence.
After the manager spoke to them they retaliated by accusing me of eavesdropping.
Anyway. The New Puritans in our media in particular need to drop their sense of prudery.
Lewdness and vulgarity in talk and manner is not just the preserve of the lads any more.
Perhaps they need either to get out more or listen more closely to their sisters.

    Active in the club is very different to physically active.
    
    I quite often walk past the local league club during training. While many of the players are healthy and fit, the coaches, managers and other ex-players that show up are all massively fat and smoke and booze during the training sessions. Healthy they certainly are not.
    
    I do not know whether this guy fit that mold or not. My condolences to his friends and family.

it would be safest to send a family member to pick up a test and test at home but with this clever Government I would have to go out coughing into my mask to the chemist to get tested risking everyone I see on the way, just so they can control the numbers.

One of the reasons I supported the Swedish approach to Rona is that any response needs to be sustainable. We need an approach that still is sustainable years down the track.

For example, there is no point having masks, unless you intend to have masks forever.

Lockdowns just delay the inevitable, at huge economic and social costs. The economic costs of our last in class approach are now over 150 billion. This isn’t sustainable.

In essence, there was one huge elephant in the room with regards to Cindy’s reactionary policy. What we do when a new variant comes along, that evades the vaccine?

Do we close the borders for a few years more? Do we double down on our lockdowns? Do we wear masks 24 hours a day, 365 days a year?

This is not an academic question. There is a new variant in Africa and Asia, that may evade the body’s immune response.

  Cindy’s policies would have made sense if the vaccine was close to 90% or more effective in all ways (both at reducing infection and reducing harm).
  
  That was the basic idea of eliminashun. Hold our breaths until the problem went away or the silver bullet arrived.
  
  Now we’re going purple in the face and there is no silver bullet and athe problem isn’t going away.
  
  As you say: What now? Do we continue to hold our breath for 5 years?
  
  The 90% vax rates is a politically expedient way to wind back from that position. Once we all get to 90% we can pretend the problem is solved and we can blame anything that isn’t perfect on the unvaxxed 10%.

  Worse, I would argue that we’re going bankrupt AND getting worse health outcomes. The real “long tail” of CV19 is going to be those tens of thousands of medical procedures that have been skipped.

Re the various posts here on diversity hires/training etc, here’s a thought: diversity hires and training has got it completely ass-backwards.

It’s not the locals who should be subjected to compulsory diversity training – it should, instead, be compulsory for those who emigrate to the host country to attend training courses teaching them to respect, appreciate and comply with their host country’s culture, customs and way of life.

Otherwise why did they emigrate?

And the bottom line is that owning your own country means not having to explain things to those from different cultures, and being free to comment without the fear of being labelled racist/[insert the woke pejorative here].

Trust president Horace McAuley said staff were leaving because of it, which meant the trust was in “crisis mode”.

“People just need to lay off, just lay right off. We have staff being called Nazi’s because they’re asking people to wear masks, and that is completely unreasonable.

“The abuse is the most difficult part of all of this for us to manage, and people are leaving hospitality simply because of that, and we’re not going to tolerate it.’’

This is going to spoil a few Christmases. By comparison, my wife got a test and a result back within 20 minutes at the airport en route to a country outside Europe.
