There’s no good news for Labour in the latest Roy Morgan poll:

Labour’s down six points to 39.%, National is up three to 26%, Act seems to have stabilised at a record 16% and there’s only 7.5 points between the Labour/Green and National Act blocs. And the Government Confidence ranking is down to 109, the lowest level since Jacinda Ardern became PM.

The Labour backbench will be getting very nervous. MP’s like Willow-Jean Prime, Emily Henderson, Shanah Halbert, Glen Bennett, Terisa Ngobi, Vanushi Walters, Jamie Strange, Gaurav Sharma and Jo Luxton will see their unexpected wins in 2020 as being unlikely to be repeated, although Luxton and Prime may get back in off the list. And when the back bench gets nervous, the job of managing it becomes even harder. That’s especially so when Chief Whip Kieran McAnulty is no sure bet to retain Wairarapa next time around, if the tide turns.

Little wonder that the PM’s office gave Trevor Mallard the hard word yesterday to drop the five-day stand-down for Auckland MP’s returning to Parliament. Having not been in the city or even her own electorate since mid-August, when she rushed back from Auckland to Wellington (how ironic is that) to launch the “short sharp lockdown” which is ongoing eleven weeks later, the PM is under immense pressure to front up. Judith Collins looked positively Prime Ministerial at the weekend at events around Auckland, filling the void created by Ardern. Collins even got favourable TV coverage from 1News!

But what reaction will the PM get when she does finally front up in Auckland? I’d say it will be very different to the way she was feted in early August, the tide having turned against her.

      Hilariously the adult sex store near us , which is on a busy road, has click and collect table set up at the front blocking the entrance of the store so customers must stand outside on the footpath to make their purchases. It was open so must be considered an essential service. And yes there was one happy customer, collecting his lockdown purchases, unconcerned about the public setup.

    How about a visit to all those 100,000 houses you were building? That won’t take too long eh!
    How about a nostalgia trip to Ihumato to see the progress Maori are making there? Once you are there, I’m sure you will be able to imagine the Maori-only Suburb nestled among the stones complete with gas-fired Hangi Pits and a ten-foot-high Tin Wall surrounding the Suburb to make the Gangs feel at home.
    Having imagined that, you can then remind Akld taxpayers how well your lot have managed their money to benefit their Country – NOT!!

  Thanks Tony for this link. Thank god for the worm is turning. When the less left leaning polls come out it should be even better. I would have been depressed if Labour still were polling over 40%.
  
  Things should start getting even more shambolic with Labour and Ardern, than they have been, with regards to covid response as their polling tanks. If that were possible.
  
  Expect Nats and Act to be getting slightly better MSM coverage. Those journos will be starting to hedge their bets that Labour will tank at the next election.

  Freedom day went well, the citizens had a great day.
  
  First a picnic at the domain then off to the border lands for dinner with the daughter.
  
  On the way back the minister of finance announced that the wage subsidy and resurgence payments were in the bank, staff to be paid.
  
  The day went so well we are contemplating making it a permanent arrangement.
  
  This makes perfect sense.
  
  Word from our intelligence service is that the local state funded propaganda department, is reporting, there is a super flue in the UK, could kill 80,000 people, will arrive here next winter.
  
  Our best estimate is that it will be a bad flue year and 700 to 1000 will die. Could be more as we clean out the stragglers saved from covid.
  
  This is because we skipped a couple of flu seasons and our natural immunity has weakened through not being exposed to the flue virus.
  
  We hear a short sharp lockdown of, say, 9 months should do it. By then we will have a pill from the drug companies that you take every day and we will all be saved and life can return to normal, the pill will be 99.9% effective.

To go with yesterday’s Neil Oliver monologue, today GB News has an article by Mark Dolan attacking lockdowns in Wales. NZ gets a mention but not as a nice comparison. As others have pointed out we are no longer world leading or one whom countries see as an exemplar, but we have become the model for unthinking totalitarian excess.Even Chairman Dan in Victoria is better than us.
If something like lockdowns don’t work, do them longer and harder. He records that though UK had 140k deaths fromCovid, they will probably have 500k from the recession alone and many more from delayed medical treatment. And UK’s economy is better than ours. He wryly comments how we are not allowed to mention Florida or Sweden because the bucked the received wisdom of the medical experts, have freedom and didn’t collapse their economy. He is very scathing of the “experts”
“Anyone that’s supportive of lockdown, at this stage in the cycle, with the data in and with countries to compare to, needs their head examined. If you still back future restrictions, you either have no information, no brain or no empathy. “ Ouch, but it sums up the NZ government well as we hit the trifecta.
Looks like this will be a site that I follow more often. I note that according to Guido, the top 5 UK rightwing blog sites’ readership swamps that of the equivalent leftwing sites, despite the leftwing ones having sugar daddies while the rightwing ones rely on subs and donations. More proof that the Twitterverse is not reality. Stuff take note.

  I stopped watching the TV news a long time ago, just nonsense. Same with that horrible little rag the Horrid, or that communist propaganda rag, get stuffed.
  
  But you are “absolutely ” right, they never mention the success stories like Sweden.
  
  You would think a sizable portion of the population, peacefully, protesting would lead the news, no nothing or if it is reported completely biased numbers underestimated, nothing about what it is about and police are disappointed so they will be arresting and charging people at a later date etc
  
  Move along nothing to see here.

I am happy for retailers, but can’t understand why cafes and restaurants aren’t allowed outdoor dining while gym classes etc can do that.
For myself though what I want to know is when can we leave the area? I have places to go and people to see! Grandkids!

  Realistically that will occur at the time the traffic light system is introduced. I reckon early December before anyone can leave Auckland, which is when they expect to hit 90% fully vaccinated across all three DHB’s. But Northland will be well below 90%.

    With a truck load of salt, but the truthful ones at the podium have said the auk border will remain until all DHBs have reached 90% as they cant have people moving between traffic lights and alert levels.
    
    Of course they just make everything up on the spot so anything could happen. Just waiting for the bounty on sparrows to be announced.

      According to the Stuff vaccination tracker, Northland will be the slowest to reach 90% fully vaccinated. Sometime in late January.
      
      Will the govt say 85% or so is enough? Will they try and implement a policy of only fully vaccinated being allowed into Northland. Real tough to administer.

        Why do I say this?
        Because the last few percentage will be way way harder than the first few percentage. You will need to be convincing the Vax hesitant/antivax/contrarians.

        If they announce 1 December as opening date, that will probably have a positive effect on Northlands Vax rates. As things stand some are probably thinking “no rush, so long as we are below 90 they will keep the JAFAs locked up.”
        Agree, a passport check and Covid test check on the roads out of Auckland would be problematic.
        Vax mandate for the dole and sickness benefit would be more effective than many of the work related ones, and no more immoral.

      I know enough about how govt operates that the govt will be committed to the traffic light system. It has had way too much publicity and socialisation. People and business are already planning on the basis of it.
      
      It would be disastrous for their credibility to back track on it now. I appreciate that for most Kiwibloggers the govt already has zero credibility but my comment is not in relation to Kiwibloggers

    If Northland is under 90%, will they keep the hard border north of Auckland?
    
    So far Auckland is the only part of the country that has been subject to hard borders but Northland has a large Maori population.
    
    Would a hard border be:
    1) proper implementation of the Crown duty under the Treaty of Waitangi to protect the health of Maori?
    or
    2) racist because it denies Maori freedom of movement?

    It will be interesting when the border is open and the queues leaving Auckland stretching for k’s, the reaction from some kiwis will be fascinating. The media will be all over it and the fear factory pumping full noise from some parts. This will no doubt spread COVID across the country the challenge for adern is to sell that COVID for Xmas from those nice Aucklanders to kiwis. The 90% argument is fine by me, but not sure that will assuage all….

    Wayne, I think it depends on how much of a political death wish Labour have.
    
    Ardern is caught in a squeeze. On the one hand continuing this ambiguous open-ended policy is shredding their vote. On the other hand her Maori caucus is pressing hard for the “no one goes till we’re all over 90% vaccinated” redline.
    
    Personally I think they are now in a spiral to losing the 2023 election. This is where National should be stepping up and demonstrating they are the alternative government-in-waiting. Unfortunately I just don’t think Judith Collins gels with the swing voter.

  Heard a mall manager on Hosking’s show saying that it’s still a shambles trying to run a mall in Akl, when hairdressers and others still have to remain closed. So will eventually tank the malls as well.
  
  I’m surmising this deliberate, stone walling process of Ardern’s is because the vaccine passport she wants to roll out is in absolute disarray and months off primetime. You can imagine what those vaxx passports will be like from an IT point of view. I’m sure many of those people that went through the drive in vaxx centres didn’t even show any ID.

A Political Obituary
Marian Hobbs resigned from the Otago Regional Council yesterday, bringing a lacklustre political career to a close.

Hobbs, a former member of the NZ Communist Party, served as a Minister in Helen Clark’s Labour Government from 1999-2002. Due to frequent high-profile blunders she acquired the nickname “Booboo.” Aside from her regular gaffes, the perception she was well out of her depth and failing in her portfolios became a source of embarassment for Labour. She ‘voluntarily’ gave up all her ministerial roles to stay on as a backbencher. Hobbs eventually left parliament for good in 2008.

A decade later she attempted a comeback in local body politics, being elected to the Otago Regional Council in 2019 and assuming the Chair. However, she proved as inept in local body politics as she was in parliament, rapidly alientating the majority of councillors with her inflexible, secretive and authoritarian leadership style. After a mere nine months in office she was deposed from the Chair, facing a humiliating 9-2 vote in favour of removal.

Staying on as an ORC councillor, Hobbs clearly stewed in resentment, throwing a tantrum demanding that the government intervene and sack the entire democratically elected council. She furthered her grandstanding in mid-2021, publically announcing she would resign unless the council was dismissed and commissioners were appointed. It soon became clear that this would not happen; she evidently didn’t have the influence that she thought she did. The pressure mounted for her to follow through on her “threat” and stand down. Under increasing criticism from fellow councillors and members of the public, she finally bowed to the inevitable and announced her resignation yesterday.

Marian Hobbs was a lightning rod for political opponents, who came to see her as blindly tribal, bumbling yet arrogant, uninterested in finding consensus, and ultimately not particularly competent. Her departure should be greeted by the good people of Otago with a sigh of relief.

The saddest thing is that she was esteemed and successful in her other career, as a school teacher. She may have had a much happier time if she’d kept out of politics entirely.

I also note the 1pm lectures are dropping away and Jacinda will only make a rare appearance (when we have some rare good news I bet).

    Ardern has lost the plot and the people of Auckland as well and the longer this b/s lockdown and border continues the worst that this will get. The anger is palpable and in my 50 years of being able to vote I have never felt so much disdain and contempt for a Politician and the Party that they represent as I feel for Ardern and her Student Union Cabal. The damage that their failed policies have done to the social, psychological and economic well being of NZ is immeasurable and will take many years to repair. As far as being relevant is concerned that went west ages ago as it was clearly revealed by her actions that she did not have the life experience or intelligence for the job and was not fit for purpose. History will not treat Ardern kindly and she will deserve all of the criticism and villification that comes her way.

    You jest but I suspect that Wellington is a bit of an alternate reality zone. With the bulk of the workforce earning ‘govt’ money, lockdowns aren’t really a worry. With the increase in staff and pay rates I imagine the ‘feel’ in Wellington is the polar opposite to Auckland and the rest of the country.

    Pretty sure it was picked to make life difficult for Judith Collins, who wanted to travel from Auckland to Wellington to attend Parliament (as the Leader of the Opposition should, especially when the country is in crisis).
    
    Apparently MP’s are actually classed as essential workers, so she could get out of Auckland. I guess the hope was that the isolation period would discourage her. It’s a wasted week every time she travels down there, yet she still managed to get up to Auckland during the recent recess and down for the resumption.
    
    There was much noise from Camp Ardern about how irresponsible it was for her to travel at the time. If you remember, it was just before we found out that James Shaw was going to Glasgow. Which was not considered irresponsible.

As mentioned in the past, the Climate Commission’s Report: Ināia tonu nei: a low emissions future for Aotearoa is 402 pages, but probably about 200 without the Maori vast cultural mis-appropriation (like “3 Waters”, about 50 / 50), which, if the report is not that accurate, will in fact besmirch te reo, tikanga and te Ao Maori.

It seems the Climate Commission should have concentrated more on accuracy than a politically correct presentation of cultural mia-appropriation. 
It seems one should even question their Disclosure statement: As anticipated by the appointment criteria, the Climate Change Commissioners come from varying fields such as adaptation, agriculture, economics, te ao Māori and the Māori-Crown relationship. While a number of board members continue to hold roles within these fields, our advice is independent and evidence-based.

I wonder what India Logan-Riley think of the vast Maori acknowledgment the Climate Commission report displays, as it appears James Shaw renders it useless, and probably voids the 300 lawyers’ lawsuit.

But then India Logan-Riley has themselves taken a considerable useless excess baggage to Glasgow: “our histories, our stories, our honourable knowledge” (albeit to burn a large portion of the land our ancestors immigrated to) and “align or get out of the way” – of what?

Here is just three things that could tell you this Government is out of their depth and has no plan to solve New Zealands problem with COVID-19.
Their Catch Cry when becoming the Government was the blame game with statements like 9 years of neglect and underfunding, but now it is the fault of our population and those that have not been vaccinated according to Jacinda Ardern our Prime Minister.
Now we have James Shaw heading to Scotland for the climate change Conference making excuses and saying he had to re- prioritize climate policy because of COVID-19 and lack of staff to help him.
Then yesterday on the podium of lies and deceit they rolled out graphs for people to see, trying to convince them that what they were achieving was being shown on these Graphs and the population would see the progress they were making, but the graphs were too small to really understand on Television.

  No. Because they have no way of actually doing it.
  
  It can’t be an app on their phone, not everyone has a smartphone (especially as they want everyone 12 and up to be fully vaxed, and my 12 year old is not getting a phone).
  It can’t be a paper one as that is easily forged.
  There is nothing in place for a business to be able to validate whether or not a vaccine certificate is valid or not
  
  And most importantly, as we’ve learnt repeatedly since March 2020. Labour often announce things with them being completely disconnected to reality

    If Cindy doesn’t announce open up by 1 December the people who are prepared to should just open up anyway in December. Everyone will have had their chance to be vaxed by then. Opening up with our level of vax and other advantages won’t be a problem going by the successes overseas. Lockdowns are clearly causing more harm than Covid at this stage of events! Sheer numbers disobeying lockdowns would make it a folly to continue with them. I sense Labour know this and are working on the PR around Freedom Day 1 December or perhaps a week earlier to prempt Collins date?

It will break down a lot and generally wont work, except to continue the COVID fear campaign, and piss everyone else off. Then it will get dropped because no one is using it because its broken half the time and generally a ridiculous idea anyway. Lockdowns are a great way to concentrate and increase the cases it a limited area.
The only things we should be reacting to are hospitalisation, icu cases and deaths.
It is becoming increasing obvious that asymptomatic and mild cases can be largely ignored.
The outdoors should be free of all restrictions except those that are self imposed.

Some random thoughts about last night’s womble from the “Podium of Truth”

1). We all know the PM’s ticks (i.e. head tilts, flapping arms etc) however did anyone notice our ‘beloved’ St Ash has developed his own tick and can’t face directly towards the audience and has to be at an angle all the time and otherwise shifts incessantly.
2). The new set of crayon drawn graphs yesterday were at complete odds with the “we’re all going to die” graphs from Gav a month ago. So who is correct?
3). Why have pools been moved from Level 3, step 2 to level 3, step 1. Does Kungflu now transmit through chloride?
4). So the infected are largely young and Maori so transmission is still largely through gangs, transitionary housing and drug deals. Glad we clarified this.
5). So there is less risk in going into a mall, with poor ventilation than having a restaurant meal outside?

Every time we reach peak stupid we find another idiocy summit to climb……..

    In some ways they got pretty lucky with their narrative. Most cases lately have been young people, so of course the hospitalisations are fairly flat, and unvaxed. They then appear to have moved a bunch of people who probably shouldn’t have been in hospital anyway home to reduce the number, and now claim “the vax is working, look at all those unvaxed in hospital”. When it looks much more likely it is just an artefact of the current age distribution of positive tests.
    
    Sooner or later, it will get into a few rest homes and the rate of vaxed hospitalisations will increase markedly. It will be interesting how they try to spin in, all I can think of is: “granny was going to die anyway, dont blame me”

Just a small anecdote that illustrates the often irrational responses to the risk of COVID transmission.

A couple of weeks ago my partner’s elderly father complained of difficulty swallowing. I think that doesn’t sound good.

He goes for some tests. A week ago. Marked urgent. Hears nothing. So he chases them up yesterday. Oops you have esophageal cancer.

Meanwhile my partner has a sinus infection. Her doctor has diagnosed her with a sinus infection. However her employer directs her to go have a COVID test. So she has a test. She is then directed to self isolate for 72 hours. She lives around the corner from her ill father but cannot visit him.

  A mate in Auckland who had had his first vaccination shot needed to see his local medical centre for an injury he has (as the doc needed to physically assess things had to be in person). Was told no as he had not yet been double jabbed.
  So despite promises otherwise, we’re now blocking access to essential medical services if you’re not yet fully vaccinated.
  (he has since been double jabbed but had a run around as he had medical reasons for the second jab to be done with aspiration prior to the injection)

      This is the Wikipedia entry on Novavax. It don’t understand the details. Do you? How is it so different that you think there is zero risk and Pfizer is high risk. Genuine question. I’m interested because based on this description I would not have a clue.

        Novavax’s vaccine was expected to provide stronger and better-lasting protection than the two mRNA vaccines, I gather because it provokes a stronger immune response. That seems to have been borne out in the Phase III trials, although the improvement is slight.
        
        It is more akin to “traditional” vaccines in that it exposes your cells to the spike protein directly, rather than giving them mRNA to make their own spike protein. In that regard it is “traditional”.
        
        But, as you point out, Novavax have a new novel manufacturing process that is quite different to how “traditional” vaccines are made. Basically they are breeding the spike protein on bacteria in a bio-reactor, then harvesting and processing those bacteria.
        
        That novel manufacturing process has been a real problem that Novavax still haven’t cracked – either for reliable purity or for volume.
        
        I would not recommend anyone wait for the Novavax vaccine because it could be a long wait. I expect that we may end up terminating our contract with Novavax, based on their inability to meet committed dates.

        Yes I saw that Novavax had applied for provisional approval in Australia on Friday. I suspect it may take a while to receive though, given they haven’t as yet got EUA from the FDA.
        
        Apparently Novavax has got third-party manufacturing running in India (most vaccines, by volume, are made in India). But then they will need to get certification for that manufacturing too.
        
        I doubt that any Novavax will be injected into Aussie or Kiwi arms this year. Maybe Feb/Mar 2022?

Corona vaxxing everyone 12 years plus is insane. The profile of the average corona patient that ends up in hospital or dead is known. Very elderly with comorbidities or those with high insulin resistance. Those with the virus can be treated to largely prevent hospitalizations. If treatments start when first tested positive.

The solution to ro vaxx the vulnerable / elderly. Have a the early treatments available for anyone with the virus to greatly reduce the symptoms &for the vulnerable hospitalizations. That is when the vaxx efficiency wears off in particular for the risk groups.

This should be over. But instead they mandate the vaxx for many and forcing it down everyone’s throats.

        They are only infectious until around 10 days after initial infection. At that point there is generally little if any virus left in the body. The ‘business end’ of Covid-19 – when most hospitalisations happen – is characterised by hyper inflammatory illness and oxidative stress.

This is a worry in my opinion. The High Court has ordered the Ministry of Health to reconsider (reverse) its decision to refuse to release to a third party the names and contact details of all unvaccinated Maori. The Ministry had refused to release this information on the grounds of protecting privacy.

The organisation involved wants these details so it can contact the unvaccinated folk and so persuade them to get vaccinated.

The judgment stated…

The rationale is that the Crown has a Treaty obligation to protect Maori from COVID. And that this obligation carries sufficient impotence to outweigh the obligation that the Ministry has to safeguard your name and contact details from third parties.

The judgment surprises me.

  So Te Tiriti has precedence over the Privacy Act. I guess as a headline in todays’ political environment, that’s unsurprising. But it is very concerning that “Principles” that are completely undefined can be used to override important legislation that is very clear, both in wording and in intent. Does Te Tiriti apply to non-Maori? Same rights and privileges as British would suggest so. Is this the wedge that holds to door open to completely removing privacy when it comes to medical information?

    given the proceeding history in the UK, I would have thought that doing so would violate the treaty anyway. Protection at the time was clearly not forcing a vaccine on them, but military protection from invasion of the country. By treating the private information of the “Natives of New Zealand” different to the “British subjects” surly is not compatible, as it is providing different rights or privileges to one group and not than another.
    
    In consideration thereof Her Majesty the Queen of England [sic] extends to the Natives of New Zealand Her royal protection and imparts to them all the Rights and Privileges of British Subjects.

  I’m 100% sure there is nothing in the treaty about the crown needing to protect Maori more that other citizens from medical infections. Not sure thet granting the rights and privilledges of british citizens translates into that 🙂
  
  If the Judge really thinks the treaty is the deciding factor here I would strongly argue the treaty prevents providing this information as the crown has promised Maori the same rights as other citizens, in this case the right to privacy.

  What does “as informed by tikanga” mean anyway? Translations suggest it’s something like “the Maori way of doing things”, presumably a reference to collective tribal lifestyles.
  
  But any Maori wanting to live like that today would already be known to their tribe, so why would the tribe have to ask the Ministry of Health for information about them?
  
  It’s starting to sound like Maori no longer have the rights and privileges of British citizens, but have become tribal property.

  I would love them to attempt to convince me why I need to get vaccinated. It would be a very short conversation and there wouldn’t be a single rude word.
  I had this conversation months ago with the head of the local medical centre. It lasted about 1 minute. I simply asked her what was the process of approval for the jab in NZ. She said “Medsafe approved it”. I said I know they did, but based on what? She had no idea.
  I said when you can answer that I’ll reconsider. As it stands, based on the criminal record of the company who supplied the data on which approval was based, I will be politely declining while I wait for trustworthy data. It’s not looking good so far.

There’s an outstanding piece in this morning’s Herald from Kate McNamara about the vaccine taskforce, and the contribution made by spin doctors. It gets fascinating around five paragraphs in:

Along the way, the public was fed a soothing version of events shaped by outside PR help, the funds for which the Cabinet signed off in May.

Karl Ferguson, a full-time public relations specialist and serial government contractor, through his firm, Arkus Communications, was paid some $133,600 to work with the taskforce, for what MBIE describes as four months of full-time work (contacted by the Herald, Ferguson declined to comment on the work). It bears noting that it wasn’t until August 10 that Cabinet funded Belly Gully negotiators and any actual vaccine purchasing.

What the Government got from Ferguson was communications that controlled and shaped the flow of information around vaccine procurement. Some of the work entailed co-ordinating the public relations teams across different government agencies, and some of it involved gauging the public’s appetite for vaccines and promoting their ultimate use.

But Ferguson’s work also created Ministers’ messaging, and helped to time and promote it in politicised ways, both through the media and through commentators in wider civil society. Its ultimate effect was to achieve a singular and flattering version of events. It is a picture that emerges from a range of government documents, primarily MBIE’s weekly report for the vaccine strategy, sent to Ministers, and released under the provisions of the Official Information Act.

$133,000 for four months of full-time work sounds like a very good lurk, if you can get it, so good luck to Karl Ferguson. But is it a good use of taxpayer funds?

Here’s where it gets even more interesting though:

There were also efforts to shape otherwise independent commentary: “We worked closely with Taskforce agencies on key communications collateral to support the Pfizer announcement…key stakeholders – especially those likely to be approached by media for comment – were provided with a ‘heads up’ prior to the announcements going out. A number of these stakeholders have provided positive public comment as a result.”

These “stakeholders” likely included both Michael Baker, an epidemiologist at Otago University and Siouxsie Wiles, a microbiologist at the University of Auckland.

Another report (of December 17) notes: “we will again brief the ‘COVID commentators’ this week (Michael Baker, Siouxsie Wiles etc) on progress to secure the vaccine portfolio…”

MBIE declined to release the full list of “commentators” who were given these advance briefings. A spokesperson said the information would need to be requested under the provisions of the OIA.

To be clear, specialists like Baker have frequently provided advice to the Government and to officials in areas of the Covid response, typically in obvious and transparent ways. And they often have inside knowledge of government work.

What is surprising here, and ill-advised, is the opaque endeavour to draw the independent voices of civil society, and particularly of academia, so close to the mechanism of Government spin. After all, Ferguson was also feeding “key messages” and “reactive Q&As” to Ministers. And the information he dispensed carefully side-stepped issues like Cabinet’s late appropriation of funds for vaccine purchases, one consequence of which was that Pfizer was left waiting more than six weeks through July and August for a first meeting with officials.

The timing of vaccine announcements also entailed considerable, and clearly political choreography, all of it aided by Ferguson who co-ordinated with pharmaceutical companies and others both the details and schedule of information released.

Boom! The likes of Dr Wiles and Prof Baker are exposed as mouthpieces for the Ardern government, delivering messages carefully crafted by a PR company. There was much cynicism when Dr Wiles won New Zealander of the Year last year, and with the benefit of hindsight, it may have been well founded.

Labour isn’t the first government to run elaborate PR campaigns behind the scenes, and they won’t be the last. But kudos to Kate McNamara for shining a light on these back-room deals, cynical timing in the shadow of the polling booth, and getting “experts” on board to run the company line. Who knew that the “most open and transparent government New Zealand has ever seen” would really be opaque, and practitioners of “political choreography”?

  Yes an excellent piece! It confirmed many suspicions. Covid response in NZ was based on politics not science. The science was hand crafted to align with political optics then carefully PR manicured for the public consumption. A lot of the early modelling (Hendy & Co) never passed the sniff test. It is almost funny so much effort was put in to case number scare mongering for so long but now that has shifted to largely ignoring case numbers and (correctly at last) saying that it is the hospitalisation numbers and incidence of those in ICU that are important. We are living an Orwellian script.

  I’d highlight a couple of sentences:
  * “there will be strong incentives on manufacturing countries to restrict the export of vaccines until they have ensured sufficient supply for their own need.” Which is what happened.
  * “There is no guarantee that New Zealand will be among the first to receive the doses we seek, especially if there is some prioritisation based on assessment of need”. Which is what happened.
  * “The tempo of negotiations is not being limited by our resourcing and process, but rather the fact that we are dependent on the response times of pharma companies that are themselves managing multiple parallel negotiations in different jurisdictions,” Which is what happened. The pharma representatives were so incredibly tired and overwhelmed. And New Zealand is too small to be a big priority for them.
  
  Matt Nippert did very well with this piece. I’m used to newspaper articles being inaccurate, but I can’t find anything too far off in this one.

He’s the consummate liar, doesn’t even flinch when totally contradicting earlier statements he’s made. Would probably even pass a lie detecting test, he’s so practiced at it. Hopefully this individual is removed from office at the next election when, Labour are removed from power. If not earlier. I’m predicting he will go the same way as the epidemiologists, under the bus, when he’s passed his use by date for Ardern.

  Of the 260 who have been hospitalised
  3 were double jabbed atleast 14 days before they were diagnosed with C19.
  5 were doubled jabbed, but less than 14 days before being diagnosed.
  27 single jabbed atleast 14 days before diagnosis.
  26 single jabbed less than 14 days before diagnosis.
  And yes, 187 who had not yet been vaccinated (to be expected as at the beginning of the outbreak we were only at 20% vaccination)

      Yes, what the data is showing is that if you’re unvaccinated you have an 11% chance of going to hospital if you’re unvaccinated. And a 2.2% chance if you’re vaccinated.
      
      This though is where the Government’s “once vaccinated all will be hunky dory” mantra falls down. It still spreads. and if you get the thousands of fully vaccinated getting covid we’re seeing in other countries our hospitals will be swamped (and Labour will still have done nothing to improve hospitals)

  If you scroll down to “Vaccination status of total cases and hospitalisations in Auckland’s outbreak”, the data shows how many people have been hospitalised and whether they have had no doses, one dose less than 14 days prior, one dose, two doses less than 14 days prior, or two doses. Certainly the unvaccinated represent the majority of cases, but there are people across the spectrum in hospital.

He told reporters that while case numbers are at higher levels than ever, total hospitalisations of people who have contracted Delta are growing at a much-reduced rate.

“In fact, a number of those people in hospital are in hospital for reasons other than COVID-19, but they happen to have a diagnosis of COVID-19 as well,” he said. “Importantly, the number of people receiving ICU or HDU-level care is really quite low.”

Just had a distressing conversation with a friend of many, many years, who is an unshakeable Jacinda fan.
The gist was she’s just “so nervous” of the loosening of Auckland’s restrictions and potential ramifications it might have on her and her lot… She doesn’t live in the Auckland area. In fact she and her husband are rich retired farmers still living on the land, whose bubble includes son and his family. They don’t want to go anywhere or do anything so obviously they don’t think anyone else ought to either.
Tried my patience to the limit not to say something I might later regret!

    Lots of people wear a mask out of consideration for the other person, not because we are fearful of the cloud of plague that apparently surrounds every person. I have considered the futility of it, and the sooner we all stop wearing masks the sooner we will no longer have to. For now, though, I show respect to others by putting on my mask when passing them. I have observed most people do the same or are already wearing a mask, and I feel no negativity towards those with no mask at all. I liken it to holding a door for the person behind me – a small gesture of courtesy and consideration that costs me only a little effort. Other people feel differently, but that’s my perspective for the moment, not forever, but for now.

      Yes, I suppose that is a more positive way of looking at it/interpreting those that don a mask when a fellow human approaches on the same footpath.
      
      But I would prefer others weren’t so ‘considerate’, because it means we are all playing a role in the Theatrics of Fear.
      
      I see the mask wearing in NZ in a non-medical setting as a symbol of compliance, and even coercion, rather than consideration.

      Outside though ? The chance of contracting Covid in an outside encounter is so close to zero that I don’t think the blog software will let me put enough 0’s in. It is lunacy, show theatre to demonstrate how medically “pious” they are, and by reflection others are so unclean, the fools deserve to be ridiculed and laughed at.
      
      Even had some mountain biker downhilling on a track where I walk wearing a mask under his full face helmet ! Must have been hard work riding up with that on.

  There is something very nasty about politicians ratcheting up fear well beyond the level of prudence to control people.
  Yes, it’s a new virus. Yes, it’s easier to catch and has more severe symptoms than other viruses we’ve known. Yes, some people will die from it. That is sad, for them and their families.
  But we will all die sometime and none of us is guaranteed it will be a long time hence, or an easy death.
  Surely in such a situation leadership should not instill paralysing fear, but rather inspiration to live well the time that we have?

    Not just a new virus, a man made virus, and it is a lot less (a LOT less) severe than it’s two related forbears, SARS and MERS. SARS had about a 12% or so fatality rate, and MERS was something like 40-50% fatal. So the SARS-2 virus is far more benign than those two, albeit one with a non-zero death rate especially for the elderly.

Level 3 Step 2 all the retail shops are open, dentist are open etc. and open for anyone vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Hairdresser etc still closed.
traffic light system red just allows vaccinated into retail shops, to the restaurants, coffee shops, dentists, hairdressers etc and the unvaccinated have to wait for wee while.

I wonder if this switch to focus reporting of hospitalisations not cases, is because they know, from overseas trends as the vax rolled out, that cases will grow, which we are now seeing here. Case numbers will also get worse when everyone’s immunity wanes in 6 months, if overseas is anything to go by.

  The female voice shouting sounds very much like the same person shouting at the Ruapekapeka 175th commemorations early this year. Waving a United Tribes flag, and went from generally quiet & calm to screaming the precise moment the cameras were rolling.
  Speaking to one of the local Maori after, and they all know that particular ‘auntie’ {rolls eyes}. Once she started, it set off a few more – but they got dragged away in that case, and booted off the site.
  So the bloke might have had a few interesting vaccine angles, it may well be only 2 people – and one of them who has made a habit of this; she ranted about white supremacist system while being physically removed.

$120M of funding for Māori and the first dose gap has sat at around 17,500 for all most a week now and lucky if they are adding 50 jabs a day

Apart from the massive waste of taxpayer money on people who don’t want help, it shows how saying NZ will open up when all DHBs hit 90% double jabbed will never ever happen

  As soon as vaccination became available to the over 65s or whatever it was for the rest of NZ, Northland DHB had it open to all comers. But at first it was very hard to get through to book an appointment. Access to the vax in Northland DHB has always been easier than Auckland. My sister took my parents (in their 80s) and her husband (non resident) up to Whangarei for their jabs as in was impossible to get a slot even for my parents in Auckland.
  When I got my jabs, I used the loophole that those under 65 could be vaxxed along with an older person from the same household – so my wife and I went with mother in law. This was only advertised as being available to Maori and Pacific races, but I judged corrently that they might not enforce the racial limitations if we just turned up.
  The idea that Maori are under vaxxed due to discrimination is just ludicrous. If Maori are under vaxxed, let’s have the blame for that sit in the right place – with Maori. Time to stop spending millions (billions if you count the lockdown cost) on pandering to to this white guilt/colonization bullshit.

  This seems to be an ongoing problem for many countries. The Brookings Institute in the US, back in 2016, convened a panel who suggested: improved competition (rewarding innovation and reducing barriers to entry), a more highly skilled workforce (not just one that has spent more time at school), smarter R&D spending (including more basic science research) and reducing activities which cost money without contributing to productivity (red tape).

    I suggest that a good deal of the problem with lower productivity is the inordinate amount of time now spend on health and safety. Takes twice as many people to do any outside job now as it used to because of all the rules.
    
    It that safety rules are all bad, we used to have too high an accident rate by far, but common sense it seems has gone out the window rather.

  % growth is a challenging thing to measure because context matters so much. What really matters is growth relative to other comparable countries.
  
  It is easy to grow off a low starting point.
  
  The whole world was in “boomer” growth mode at the time.
  
  Comparing GDPs is broken in many ways too. Consider that rent in Ireland is almost twice what it is in NZ so that bigger GDP doesn’t necessarily buy more.

    The hospitalisation numbers for the entire delta outbreak are about 5/6 of the way down this.

    Then there are ambulance fee, prescription fees, taxi to the hospital charge if you are not dying, then – never mind.

  So if overseas trends hold the fully vaxed will continue rising until they become the majority and then become the same ratio of the overall population vax rate. What would be useful for people to know is the date that 2.5% were second vaxed because overseas trend says lasts 6 months then it gets nasty.
  
  Also, watch for variant A.30 if it ever makes it here, that has mutations on the spike protein, and is exactly what the doctors and scientists I listen to have been warning about. The vaxed have no protection from their immune system to help them with a variant with a mutated spike protein, their immune system will ignore it, because it’s only looking for the spike protein.
  
  This is what Bloomfield and the NZ medical establishment and fake news has allowed to happen to everyone who’s been vaxed.
  
  Luckily all the correct data was always out there so all anyone ever had to do was look for it rather then blindly trusting people like that, and given who the people like that are, why on earth would anyone with a 3-digit IQ ever trust them with anything let alone with something important such as one’s health and the health of anyone’s dependant children.

I see that the Ministry of Health has been handed another two defeats in Court this week. First, Borrowdale’s appeal to the Court of Appeal confirmed that the D-G had acted unlawfully in delegating powers at the time of the first lockdown. Second, Tamihere’s people are likely to get access to individual health records which will identify who is unvaccinated, so they can door knock to get vaccinations up in the North.
Despite the fact that the Ministry has been guilty of some very arbitrary and unprincipled decision-making around MIQ in particular, in these two cases, I am not unsympathetic. Getting the technicalities of delegation right in times of urgency is never easy. And permitting a quango to access individual health records doesn’t sit comfortably, particularly when the principal basis for granting the application for review was that the Ministry had failed to properly apply Tiriti principles, which in this case seems to mean that privacy for individual Maori is trumped by the collective good that will come from vaccinating those who have hitherto not been so. When that goal is to be accomplished by people being accosted in their own homes and presumably pressured into doing something they have hitherto decided not to do, notions of free will and privacy seem to have taken a back seat to collective protection, if indeed that is what vaccination provides.
