    It’s a Health ansdsafety issue Worksafe have issued teh fine. – and I’d recommend they fight it on Health and Saety Grounds – i.e. the quality of their own H&S systems, indicating the inconsistencies in ‘expert’ advice about contagion, about the likelihood of covid in their area, and the ways they hae set up systems to deal with Risk and Risk assessment.
    
    Let’s put it this way, if Worksafe were to issue a fine ona business for failing to protect against the likelihood of a grand-piano falling on someone when the nearest grand-piano is proven to be
    a) in another part of the country.
    b) not even assessable as a risk.
    c) in a space in whic it is statistically impossible to even place a grand-oiano, let alone hoist it up to the ceiling.
    But a ‘law’ is passed to ‘protect’ people from grand-pianos, following a protracted media campaign to ‘raise awareness’ about the risks of grand pianos crushing people.
    
    I’d argue that my risk assessemnt proceses, having established that even if the risk of the grand-piano were considered and ‘acceptable’ risk, geneally – it would be untenable to fine me for not impementing safety controls for what is esentially – not a risk.
    
    It is possible that the ‘holes’ in Labour’s hastily and badly constructed ‘laws’ are so poorly wordred, that one might be able to challenge them if they desire to do so.
    
    I’d support such a venture.

      The thing is, some hazard like a hole in the floor at work is clearly danger to everyone. However, letting unvaccinated staff work, who presumably do so willingly, is not a danger to anyone, unless of course the vaccine doesn’t work, in which case it doesn’t matter if staff are unvaccinated, because what is the danger posed by them?

      Lee if the gym owner requires staff to take the vaccine then a staff member is harmed due to an adverse reaction, is the gym owner then subject to any potential prosecution from Worksafe and subsequent penalties for imposing a condition of employment that resulted in a foreseeable injury?
      
      Because if you look at the NZ CARM system, such IS arguably “reasonably foreseeable”…

        Good question. I know someone who took the vaccine (Pfizer) to meet employment requirements and ended up at A & E next day with pneumonia, then developed joint problems and has been on prescribed painkillers ever since.

      You would think to get a conviction that they would have to show that people were put at an unacceptable risk.
      
      Did anybody catch Covid from the Gym, No
      Where the staff being tested, Yes
      Is a Negative test on the day better than a leaky Imperfect vaccine 6 Months prior, No.
      
      Do I have confidence in our Justice system, NO.
      
      Should it be tested in a Court of law, “absolutely”.
      
      The longer it takes to bump and grind through the Court process the better, because the “science” that is settled is changing daily.

      I agree. The issue I have with this it that Ardern and her cabal have carefully nurtured a bio-fascist pogrom against the unvaxxed. Why? Delta, and Omi are showing us that the vaxxed have immune systems that appear to demand reducing frequency juice doses to maintain any any semblance of ‘protection’ (setting aside the potential for OAS or ADE). Studies from Norway, UK and Israel show the vaxxed enjoying negative protection (aka increased susceptibility) to omi after 8-12 weeks. Ardern’s actions are an evil sponsorship of hatred in pursuit of support to mask her manifest failings as a leader.

The slow dawning realisation is making them look for someone to lash out at, and on cue, Ardern, the monster, has put the unvaxxed who have done nothing wrong, are to be targeted.
        Sad to witness someone’s mental and physical disintegration. Even sadder to see them try and find someone else to blame for their personal mistakes.
        And it isn’t close to 90%. I would wager at least 50% of that 90% didn’t partake through free choice. One of the insidious coercion measures would have made them take the jab. The more they realise what happens the angrier they will become.

        Hendy is a physics teacher, Baker a career academic, Plank is a mathematician. None of them have held a real job in their lives. They based their idiotic models on the same idiotic models produced by Neil Ferguson and Imperial College London. Ferguson has been so badly wrong in everything he has predicted in his whole career, the only possible way he still has a platform is because somebody is paying good money to keep him in a prominent position. EVERYTHING he has produced in his career has been catastrophically wrong, yet he maintains a high profile in media and academia. In the real world he would be in jail. In the real world, none of the useful idiots held up to be “experts” in NZ would get air time, other than to be held up as examples of what can go badly wrong when you screw up the education and funding systems.

      And the way to reduce deaths is to vax the unhealthy and old and leave the rest alone. Most of the rest will fight it off just fine at home with no vaccine injuries to contend with eith and no potential long term vax injuries that we don’t know about yet.

      Only 2% of cases (238 million) have died (4.82 million) worldwide, in terms of world population (7.9 billion) that percentage drops to 0.06%.

    Parliament did pass legislation grant rule making capability to Ministers and Health Ministry. Unless there were drafting blunders or similar, or significant BORA conflict (imbalance of rights), the Courts have to uphold this law. Legal attacks on Covid related law have generally been unsuccessful, so a legal attack in this instance is unlikely to succeed.

        Law is seldom clear–tax law has to be but doesn’t always succeed. The recent Covid Bills feel like a dogs breakfast of obscurantism. Amateur law drafting? I expect not, but politicised junior assistants, maybe.
        
        This govt is protected too by a paid off media which feels close to corrupt bribery.
        No respect is being paid to law in NZ any longer with registered land titles now devolved to Maori activists to reallocate. Superior laws like the Bill of Rights or the Nuremberg Convention are treated as irrelevancies despite the fact the International Criminal Court could issue a warrant for arrest of parties in NZ.

Captain Mainwaring

One of my neighbouring houses has been a private rental for the last 12 years. No real issues with any of the successive tenants and the current ones for the last three years or so are a group of four young Maori people plus a toddler (and another one on the way). They look after the section, give me their lemons and are sociable neighbours.
They have recently been given notice because the landlord wants to sell the house. Rather than bitch and moan and cry to the Government they have pooled their resources and bought a house. Yes, it’s in Wainuiomata but so what, the place is not as rough as it was and you have to start somewhere.
Not all Maori people are useless gang members, and I wish my neighbours all the best for their future.
I’ve got my fingers crossed that the new owner of the property doesn’t rent it to Kainga Ora.

  There’s nothing wrong with Wainuiomata.
  
  When I came to NZ in 2003 and was looking for somewhere to live, I was warned off the town. But I had a look anyway.
  
  The place was obviously not wealthy, but there was very little litter or graffiti, no burned out cars on the side of the road, and no damages trees.
  
  All in all, a much more pleasant and well kept place than the low income suburbs I had seen in the UK.

    What original state houses? As far as I know, Wainuiomata was developed by private enterprise particularly Fletchers and there were no state houses. Less wealthy families could ‘capitalise’ child benefits to purchase a section and could borrow 100% from State Advances to purchase a ‘brand new’ house built by Fletchers or its subsidiaries.       A friend of mine rents to HNZC in Onehunga. Ironically, an ex state house. Lovely Poly family, solo Mum plus several kids, all of whom have grown up to be successful graduates & fine young people. They think of the house as a family home & have offered to buy it for their old Mum.

I want to know the plan when we get exponential omicron transmission. Will the infected and all their close contacts have to stay home and lock the doors? Places of interest – have symptoms, get tested, then stay home and lock the doors at least until the results arrive..

Essential services have few, maybe no, staff. Same will less essential services.

Where is the plan.

  As said mower also requires technology, being akin to that which locks some supermarket trolley wheels when they cross the carpark border, such a lawnmower can require up to $2,000 so it will “mow” only within a specific area that it is assigned to. I’d not bother – rather get in a tanned, half naked young man with a few muscles (as I remember) and a real mower, even a scythe :o)

  Most people in ICU are ventilated, and in an induced coma to allow their body to rest (most frequently the brain), so they’re actually the complete opposite to fighting – they are sedated, while swelling decreases and natural recovery takes place.

    Many of those sources are indeed questionable, some even are as questionable as the official narrative. The sad part is that it is so necessary as the official political line is so often deliberately falsified for partisan political reasons. And it extends to the deliberate obfuscation and even falsification of data. For example, why is it is reporting vaccine adverse events purely voluntary, and according to some medical people I have spoken to, discouraged ?

He may not deliver a message we like, but it is sound from an epidemiological standpoint.

This whole vaccine thing makes SO much more sense to me now after reading this article. Vaccine makers want the Emergency Use Authorization to be maintained at all costs.

The reason our children are being targeted by COVID mandates is because vaccine makers want to get the shots onto the childhood vaccination schedule. Once a vaccine is added to the childhood schedule, the vaccine maker is shielded from financial liability for injuries, unless the manufacturer knows about vaccine safety issues and withholds that information.

Products must satisfy four criteria in order to get emergency use authorization: There must be an emergency; a vaccine must be at least 30% to 50% effective; the known and potential benefits of the product must outweigh the known and potential risks of the product; and there can be no adequate, approved and available alternative treatments (drugs or vaccines). Unless all four criteria are met, EUA cannot be granted or maintained.

First, the secretary of Health and Human Services has to declare and maintain a state of emergency. If the emergency were to go away, all EUA products would have to come off the market. And that doesn’t just mean vaccines. It also includes the PCR tests and even surgical masks.

        As I understand it, antibody levels fall away within a few months, leaving the T-cells guarding the fort as it were. When the immune system detects another invasion (of covid Delta or whatever) the T-cells are bolted in to action and produce the antbodies to fight the infection.

      Oh, and the Auditor General determined that the process to award the $50m contract for saliva testing was hopelessly flawed, did not follow an adequate procurement process, and 4 out of the 5 panellists had declared conflicts of interest (only after they “came to light” i.e. someone pointed out they were working for the companies bidding for the contract). Yet the AG declined to hold a full inquiry into the process, declaring it “not necessary”.

My parents (aged 80) had some friends over yesterday while I was there. The 88 yr old proclaimed that he was more than happy with his life the way it is, can still play croquet and have a meal out with a vax pass and “ they should just keep the country closed up” and “these people complaining should just get the vax pass so they can live a normal life too”. I was incredulous and have a new admiration for my folks ability to hear this and not tell him what a selfish prick he is. He doesn’t have kids so when I asked was he ok with the economy tanking, affecting the future of everyone under 60, with the mental and physical health issues caused by this govt actions, reiterated that he was quite happy with how things were and people should stop complaining and go get vaxxed. He admitted that the vax had no benefit for someone “young and fit” like me (late 40s) but thought I should just have it anyway.
I was fuming at how someone could be that selfish. As I left I said well I’m glad you get to keep playing croquet while the ship goes down.

  I’m afraid that’s pretty similar to the reaction of some of the 65+ year-old folk that I’ve been meeting.
  
  They don’t seem too concerned that their grandchildren have been getting a lousy education for the last two years and have missed out on sporting and social activities.
  
  They don’t seem to make the connection that if our economy continues to slide down the tubes, opportunities for young and poor folk are going to reduce.

I remember when

Is the achilles heel of the ‘elimination’ approach to covid becoming increasingly apparent.
When was the last time the media drew attention to Sweden.
We are now on the ‘wrong side of the fence and, if omicron (as appears increasing the case) is the return to normal, are left in a form of isolation.
There has been a lot of reference to vaccination for other diseases as justification but many of these diseases already had a form of herd immunity.
Measles, smallpox, influenza, mumps, etc.
Why would we let pharmaceutical companies, with massive amounts of money tied up in vaccine research, become a major source of advice on treatment.
No fear of biased information there.
Let’s not be anti-vaccination just have a full, science lead, debate of all the issues. Pros and cons.
A starting point now would be what do we do about omicron.

    Sweden did pretty well compared to the lunatics who locked down and masked up. They stayed mostly open and gave people the ability to act like adults. Ardern did the complete opposite and treated us like kindy kids. Worse, she abused us and bullied and manipulated in the most disgusting manner.
    Sweden made the same mistakes as others in putting elderly into care facilities where the disease ran rampant among the most vulnerable who were the ones how should have been protected.

Isn’t another thing we can add to the list of this government’s failures the road toll? Remember their big campaign under the Green Minister to get it down – lowering speed limits and Arnco/ cable barriers everywhere rather than fixing potholes and improving sightlines. Oh and of course, road money got diverted to phantom cycle bridges and railway tunnels.
When will we have that examination from the compliant media.

There is one issue that stands out among many that confirms the politicisation of Covid and the gross misuse of fear to exercise control and maintain the constant platform of media domination.

If our leadership and that in many other countries had focused on the need for having a strong immune system, the regular use of vitamins D, C and K, the need for being outdoors in the sun, the use of zinc, knowing how effective those measures are then we may have thought there was a degree of genuineness and real kindness.

Had there been a rush to hold robust trials of ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine right at the beginning we might have been persuaded they had our best interests at heart.

Alas, too much to ask of power hungry, poorly-principled politicians.

  I believe the only post I did on Christmas day was on our inability to whip UHT cream. I thought somebody might know the answer – is why I posted. Instead I got heaps of downticks… And I still don’t know why it wouldn’t whip. Maybe to do with fat content. It said on the carton to chill before whipping, so you must be able to do it… ?‍♂️

    I had trouble with whipping double cream this year. Succeeded when used different bowl and eggbeater/whisk. Combination that worked was bowl with rounded base and eggbeater was wider and more flat at blade end so more air added lower.

More gun violence in Auckland and minister of police Poto Williams I assume doesn’t see an escalating problem.

The 501 gang/crim returnees from Australia hasn’t helped but why have they not been monitored by the police over here?

2022 is going to get worse for violent gang/gun related crimes not just on our suburban streets but on our main city streets if this govt doesn’t do something soon — arm the police and tougher sentencing.

The Christchurch Press today trots out Jeffrey Paparoa Holman in its Maorification campaign.

Holman is a poet, born in Britain, has a Ph.D. In Maori language, and has been on the “creative writing” train. He’s been “writer in residence” at Waikato University and New Zealand representative at the University of Iowa’s “international writing program.

Holman is interviewed together with his partner, Jeanette King, head of the University of Canterbury’s Maori studies department.

Holman says in the article:””You cannot be a New Zealander and not be a Maori New Zealander.”

However, and this seems remarkable to me, Holman says he and King agreed early in their relationship not to speak Maori at home.

The Christchurch Press is running a series of articles to help you learn Maori.

This will be either: to boost paid circulation of the Press, and retain readers through January renewals; or, to meet State subsidy requirements.

I remember when

Newshub: La Nina just raised sea levels in the Western Pacific by up to 20 cm. This height will be normal in 2050.
The Conversation: The waxing and waning of La Nina/El Nino results in differing levels of spring tides.
However there is year on year variability in the magnitude of these tides from location to location.
The easterly trade winds (east to west) across the Pacific Ocean are stronger in La Nina years.
This leads to a larger build up of warm water in the western Pacific.
Just in case you didn’t see this information in the cop26 releases.

This time 40 years ago, I was in Wellington Woman’s Hospital about to give birth to my first daughter.

It’s strange how I have few memories of the actual labour, but just remember that Hubby decided to stop off en-route to hospital to load up on lollies and chocolate for himself, and I missed out on lunch that day…and was damn hungry by tea-time.

    I was fortunate to enjoy 1 week’s stay at WWH…time enough to establish that:
    1: the black stuff baby vomited up on Day 1 was nothing to worry about!
    2: Breast-feeding does not entail a mere suck at a nipple
    3: Post-birth is a bloody business…and thank goodness, I wasn’t do the washing.
    
    I think biffing young mums out of hospital/maternity care a few hours after birth is NUTS.

      Does depend Maggie. My wife stayed for two nights for the first baby and she had stitches to be at her, but couldn’t wait to get home. For Baby #2 went in at 11 am and home by 2 pm same day. Greeted suggestions of an overnight stay with a very firm “Thank you, but no thank you”.
      
      Might be a family thing, one of her sisters went in about midday and claimed to be home by 1:30, though to be fair it was her 5th so she was pretty used to the process by then. Was growled at by the nurse because it was a real rush to make it to the delivery suite in time.

      With my first, I was in hospital 10 days (to ensure established breast feeding).
      7 for the second (to make sure I hadn’t forgotten how)and 2 for the third (it was assumed that I knew how). Apparently experience counted.
      About 40 years later I was an honorary midwife at a small hospital with a birthing unit, and the Mums went home as soon as they could muster the energy. Their very own Community Midwives were responsible for all that mothering stuff – ideally all the births were at home anyway.

Covid is now so mild that it is indistinguishable from the common cold, according to a new study, and half the people with a “cold” may have Covid.

One in two people with new cold-like symptoms will have COVID-19 rather than the common cold, new data from the Zoe symptom tracker app suggests.

Tim Spector, an epidemiologist and the study’s lead author, said in a press release on Thursday that for most people, getting infected with Omicron will feel “much more like the common cold, starting with a sore throat, runny nose and a headache”, rather than fevers, continuous cough, loss of taste or smell.

To get to the 50% figure, Spector and his team compared the number of new cases of a cold-like illness to the number of new cases of COVID-19 confirmed by a lateral flow or lab test.

“We need to change public messaging urgently to save lives as half of people with cold-like symptoms now have COVID-19,” Spector said.

“It’s virtually impossible” to tell between a cough and COVID-19 unless you get tested, he said.

I’ve just driven north from the Hauraki Plains (Waikato). I’m glad I wasn’t driving south. Traffic is bumper to bumper from Auckland and crawling for at least 60 kilometres. It felt good to speed past going the other way. Those folk are sure going to need a holiday when they get to where ever they’re going.
